Tour de Ski 2022-23: Preview, schedule, format, and how to watch cross-country stars including Klaebo and Diggins in the multi-stage event

One of the highlights of the cross-country skiing season, the 2022-23 Tour de Ski, gets underway in Val Muestair, Switzerland on New Year's Eve.

Reigning men's champion Johannes Klæbo will be strongly fancied to retain his crown, while Jessie Diggins is bidding to regain the title she won two years ago when she became the first non-European winner of the Tour de Ski.

The skiers will take part in seven stages with just two rest days, with the climax on the famously steep and gruelling Alpe Cermis Final Climb mass start in Val di Fiemme.

The 17th Tour de Ski is the first where the men and women will race equal distances after the FIS made all World Cup races the same length across genders.

When is the 2022-23 Tour de Ski?

The 2022-23 Tour de Ski starts with the freestyle sprint at Val Muestair in Switzerland on Saturday 31 December 2022.

The skiers have two races in Val Muestair and then two at Oberstdorf in Germany before ending with three at Val di Fiemme in Italy.

The concluding freestyle Final Climb mass start of Alpe Cermis is on Sunday 8 January 2023.

2022-23 Tour de Ski format

While the Tour de Ski races are FIS cross-country World Cup events with the standard point-scoring system, the overall standings for the Tour de Ski itself are decided on time like the Tour de France bicycle race on which it is based.

Time bonuses are awarded on both sprint legs (stages 1 and 3) - 60 seconds to the winner down to four for finishing last in the quarter-finalists - which are taken off the aggregate time.

On the mass start in Stage 6, there is an intermediate sprint with the leader at that point earning 15 bonus seconds down to one second for 10th place.

The leader of the overall standing wears a yellow bib , again like the Tour de France yellow jersey.

There is also a point standing for the best sprinter with the winner claiming a red bib.

Finally, there is a team competition where the times of the best two athletes per gender per country on each stage are added together.

Skiers to watch

Johannes klæbo.

The sprint king started the season under something of an injury cloud with damage to the tendon attaching the hamstring in his right leg to his pelvis muscles.

Despite being unable to train as much as usual, five-time Olympic gold medallist Klæbo managed to start the World Cup campaign with a bang with three wins on the opening weekend in Ruka, Finland.

A week later, the Norwegian was forced to miss the 10km freestyle in Lillehammer before taking yet another sprint victory.

Illness saw Klaebo miss the two races in Beitostølen, but he returned in Davos earlier this month (17 December) to take sprint second behind Italian veteran Federico Pellegrino and fifth in the 20km freestyle race.

While his focus for the season is the 2023 World Championships in Planica, Slovenia at the end of February, it would be foolish to bet against the 26-year-old Norwegian collecting a third Tour de Ski title.

Jessie Diggins

Diggins keeps rewriting the history books, with her victory in last Sunday's 20km freestyle race in Davos seeing the American take her World Cup win tally to 14 , more than any other cross-country skier from the U.S..

That was her second win of the season, leaving her second in the overall World Cup standings. A day earlier, she took second in the sprint behind Swiss skier Nadine Faehdrich .

The 31-year-old from Minnesota made headlines when she and Kikkan Randall - whose World Cup win record she broke in Davos - won team sprint gold at PyeongChang 2018, claiming Team USA's first ever title in cross-country skiing.

But she has proved herself equally adept over longer distances over the years, and successfully lobbied for women's World Cup race lengths to be extended to match the men's.

And with last year's winner Natalia Nepryayeva absent due to Russia's ban from competition, Diggins is one of the favourites for this year's title.

Paal Golberg

Klæbo leads a strong Norwegian men's team for the Tour de Ski although it is Paal Golberg who currently leads the overall World Cup standings.

The 32-year-old has been supremely consistent this term, finishing in the top six in every race and winning two of them: the 20km classic mass start at Lillehammer and the 10km classic in Beitostolen.

And despite missing Davos with a cold, Golberg remains ahead in the distance and overall World Cup.

In his two previous Tour de Ski appearances, he finished sixth in 2019-20 and fifth last year.

Better is expected this time although he will face plenty of competition from within his own team with Klæbo, Simen Hegstad Kruger , Hans Holund and Sjur Røthe sweeping the podium in the last race before Christmas.

Consistency counts for a lot in the Tour de Ski, and Tiril Weng has shown plenty of that recently.

While the Norwegian is yet to claim an individual World Cup win, she has finished every race this season inside the top nine with five of those being on the podium.

The 26-year-old was only 10th in her third Tour de Ski last year, but she stands second in the distance World Cup rankings and top of the sprint World Cup.

Just two points ahead of her in the distance class is teammate Anne Kalvaa who is having a breakout year at the age of 30.

There will be no fewer than three members of the Weng family taking part with Tiril's twin sister Lotte and her third cousin, two-time Tour de Ski winner Heidi Weng , also lining up.

Andrew Musgrave

Great Britain may not be one of the powerhouse nations of cross-country skiing, but Andrew Musgrave has been challenging for podium finishes over the past six or seven years.

The 32-year-old was fourth in the 50km mass start at the 2017 World Championships and took seventh in the 30km skiathlon at PyeongChang 2018.

While long distances are his speciality, four-time Olympian Musgrave made a World Cup podium for the first time in five years when he took third in the 10km classic race at Beitostolen, Norway earlier this month.

He is currently fourth in the distance World Cup standings and looks certain to improve on his best finish in the Tour de Ski which was 15th in 2018.

Frida Karlsson

With two wins in 20km races this season, Frida Karlsson looks to be among the top contenders for this edition of the Tour de Ski.

A three-time junior world champion, Karlsson has long been touted for big things.

And the 23-year-old has picked up where she left off last season when she took second place in the distance World Cup and finished top of the U23 World Cup standings.

Teammate Ebba Andersson is another athlete to watch after she beat Karlsson on the opening weekend of the campaign in the 10km classic race in Ruka, Finland.

With three podium finishes to her name this season, Andersson will be looking to complete her full set of Tour de Ski finishes after taking third place in 2020-21 and second place last time.

While neither skier is particularly suited to sprint races, both should be well and truly in the mix in the general classification with their prowess over longer distances.

Jessie Diggins won a second Tour de Ski title and may be en route to the most successful World Cup season in U.S. cross-country skiing history.

Diggins, an Olympic gold, silver and bronze medalist, won the Tour de Ski, a Tour de France-like stage competition, by 31.6 seconds combining results from seven days of racing different events.

She powered through the final two stages on Saturday and Sunday after being injured in a crash on Thursday before a rest day.

Fellow American Sophia Laukli won Sunday’s finale, including a 2.2-mile climb up Alpe Cermis in Italy with an average gradient of 11.6 percent. It was Laukli’s first World Cup victory. At 23, she became the youngest U.S. cross-country skier to win a World Cup.

Laukli is a Maine native who is a dual citizen of Norway, where her father is from.

Diggins began the day with a 43-second lead in the Tour standings, greater than the margin separating second place from sixth place. She finished sixth in Sunday’s stage to comfortably win the overall title.

In 2021, Diggins became the first skier outside Europe to win a Tour, which at the time was the biggest individual title of her career. She since won her first two individual Olympic medals (silver and bronze) and last February became the first American to win an individual world title in the sport.

This season, she has three individual World Cup race wins and eight podiums at the midpoint.

By wins and podiums, Kikkan Randall owned the best season by a U.S. cross-country skier before this year — five individual race wins and nine podiums in 2012-13.

Diggins also leads the standings for the World Cup overall title, crowning the world’s best all-around cross-country skier, by 308 points. In 2021, when Diggins became the first American woman to win the overall, her final margin was 268 points.

The Tour de Ski is arguably the crown jewel of this season because there are no Olympics or world championships.

But Diggins has another carrot ahead -- a World Cup stop in her home state of Minnesota from Feb. 17-18. It’s the first cross-country World Cup to be held in the U.S. since 2001.

Tour de Ski: Thrilling finale on the Val di Fiemme Final Climb

As the Tour de Ski 2023/2024 reaches its pinnacle, Val di Fiemme gears up to host the grand finale on January 6 and 7, 2024, marking the 18th appearance of this prestigious competition in the charming Italian locale. 

The Lago di Tesero cross-country skiing stadium and the Olimpia III track on the Alpe Cermis will witness the epic battles, featuring the 15 km classic on Saturday and the iconic 10 km free technique race up to Val di Fiemme Final Climb on Sunday.

The Final Climb: A Symbol of Greatness

The renowned “Final Climb” is not merely a Mass Start over a medium distance; it stands as a symbol of cross-country skiing, reserved for the true titans of the sport. Victory on this challenging course not only secures a position among the great champions but also earns valuable points for the World Cup along with substantial prize money.

The journey unfolds with a smooth 6-7 kilometers, allowing athletes to warm up before the real ascent on the Alpe Cermis. Spanning over 3600 meters, this ascent demands a climb of 420 meters in altitude. The initial ascent maintains a firm but regular gradient of 12.2%, leading to the formidable “Jump of Skiri,” a daunting 26.5% climb, followed by the demanding Pallua climb with a 14.3% average gradient. 

Athletes face challenging segments, including a heart-pounding 28% gradient at “the deer’s den” and a relentless climb up the “direttissima del Cermis” with an average never below 10%. The final sprint at an 11% gradient marks the triumphant approach to the finish line at the middle station of the Doss dei Laresi cableway.

Historic Records and Contenders

Records reveal impressive performances on this challenging climb. Until 2019, the climb time recorded only the final section, showcasing the prowess of athletes like Heidi Weng and Maurice Manificat. With men leading the climb this season, anticipation is high as they aim to surpass their predecessors’ records.

Tour de Ski Season 2023/2024

Now in its 18th edition, Tour de Ski consists of seven competitions over nine days in three different locations and two countries, and it’s the fifth stage of the 2023/2024 cross-country skiing World Cup.

Cross-country skiing: Frida Karlsson wins ‘Tour de Ski’ after final climb thriller in Val di Fiemme (Italy) 1 min read

Frida Karlsson has won the ‘ Tour de Ski ‘ 2023, the prestigious touring event that takes place at the turn of the year and includes six stages, also valid for the World Cup in cross-country skiing. The 23-year-old Swede took the lead at the last event, with the favour of prediction and an advantage of 1’12” over Norway’s Tiril Udnes Weng and 1’27” over Finland’s Kerttu Niskanen. The ascent of Cermis was the only real threat, an effort that Karlsson had never before undergone in her career: the Swede took the climb in the lead and dictated the pace precisely to avoid any surprises, even impressing along a stretch with an average gradient of 26.5%. At one point Karlsson, Frenchwoman Delphine Claudel (later stage winner) and Weng remained in the lead. With 1.2 kilometres to go, Karlsson went into deep crisis: Weng and Niskanen attacked her, trying to make up the minute’s gap in the standings and attempting to overturn the overall ‘Tour de Ski’ ranking in its closing stages. Karlsson went into a blackout in the last 700 metres and arrived exhausted at the finish line, but still managed to win the ‘Tour de Ski’ with a lead of 33″ over Niskanen and 47″ over Weng. Karlsson collapsed to the ground shortly after the finish line and was attended to by the medical staff, struggling to get up and failing to make it to the podium ceremony: a malaise caused by the great effort made on the Cermis and which caused some concern.

Historiska beslutet: tour de ski avgörs bara i italien.

Ända sedan starten 2006 har Tour de Ski avgjorts i minst två olika länder.

Så blir det inte kommande vinter.

Efter önskemål från Sverige tog Fis längdkommitté i går beslut om att kommande vinter köra samtliga Tour de Ski-etapper i Italien.

– Utifrån hållbarhets- och kostnadssynpunkt tycker vi att det är bra, säger Svenska skidförbundets längdchef Lars Öberg.

Under veckan har det internationella skidförbundet (Fis) haft en mängd olika möten i slovenska Portoroz.

Ett av mötena var med Fis längdkommitté, där en av punkterna var kommande säsongs världscupkalender.

För mycket resande

Där togs ett historiskt besked. Efter önskemål från ett antal länder, däribland Sverige, så röstades det igenom att Tour de Ski kommande vinter enbart ska köras i Italien.

Detta dels för att flera länder har ansett att det blivit för mycket resande de senaste åren, men även på grund av ekonomiska problem hos en del av de arrangerande förbunden.

– Ur hållbarhets- och kostnadssynpunkter så tycker vi att det är bra, säger Svenska skidförbundets längdchef Lars Öberg, som sitter med i Fis längdkommitté och därmed var med och fattade beslutet, till SVT Sport.

”Det känns bra”

Därmed så kommer hela sju världscuptävlingar kommande vinter avgöras i Italien.

– Jag tycker att det känns bra ur ett svenskt perspektiv, men sen är det så klart inte bra om det på sikt blir för många tävlingar i ett och samma land, säger Öberg.

Sverige har även försökt få en återgång till att touren ska avslutas med en jaktstart uppför den klassiska slalombacken i Val di Fiemme, men så blir det inte. Inte heller blir det någon förändring av poängsystemet, som många upplevde som väldigt krångligt vintern som var.

Från de olika kalendermötena i Slovenien kan det även konstateras att det även kommande år blir alpin premiär i Sölden i oktober, en premiär som många har velat se senarelagd på grund av snöbristen som ofta råder så pass tidigt på säsongen.

– Det är ju klassikertävlingar, och dem flyttar man inte. Det är ju Fis största varumärke, säger Anders Sundqvist, som sitter med i Fis alpina världscupkommitté, till SVT.

Samtliga beslut som fattats på veckans möten ska nu godkännas av Fis styrelse, men det är oftast bara en formalitet.

Ve švýcarském Val Müstair byl v sobotu 31. prosince zahájen 17. ročník Tour de Ski. Na účastníky etapového závodu čeká sedm závodů právě ve Švýcarsku, německém Oberstdorfu a závěr tradičně hostí italské středisko Val di Fiemme. Jaký je kompletní program a průběžné výsledky Tour de Ski 2023?

Česká nominace na Tour de Ski 2023

Pětičlenná česká výprava se pod vedením trenéra Jana France vydala do švýcarské Val Müstairu na start Tour de Ski. „Pokud Michal bude pokračovat ve skvělých výkonech, které předváděl už od začátku sezony, věřím, že by boj o elitní desítku byl reálný. To by podle mě byl fantastický úspěch,“ řekl na svazovém webu trenér Jan Franc.

Wout van Aert is back on the bike already after his horror crash, but will he be back at the Tour de France with Visma-Lease a Bike this summer for its big brawl with Tadej Pogačar?

That’s the question that’s rattling through Flanders right now.

Van Aert logged 18 hours of training last week to complete a stunning comeback from a crash in late March that left him with a punctured lung, broken collarbone, and seven cracked ribs.

He’s not slated to race his sixth-straight Tour de France this July – the Giro d’Italia and Olympic Games were his priorities – but it’s starting to look like Visma-Lease a Bike might need him at the grand boucle more than it ever has before.

Two-time defending champion Jonas Vingegaard is still deep in his own rehabilitation from injury while his rivals are racing hot toward the Tour’s grand départ .

With the timelines of any “comeback” uncertain for Vingegaard, Van Aert could be the key to Visma-Lease a Bike lighting up the TdF for a third year in a row.

Visma-Lease a Bike wasn’t able to confirm Van Aert’s future schedule when asked Tuesday by Velo .

However, hints at a him lining out for the Tour of Norway later this month put weight behind rumors blowing through Belgian media that WVA will return to the Tour this summer to help Visma-Lease a Bike foil Giro pink jersey Pogačar in his quest for the grand tour double.

“Wout isn’t at the stage where we can make that decision yet,” team director Merijn Zeeman told Wielerflits of Van Aert’s schedule. “In the best-case scenario, Norway is feasible for him. But we can’t say anything definite about that now.”

It’s all an unknown for Vingegaard: ‘We don’t know how my recovery will be’

Van Aert is one of two very big moving pieces in the Visma-Lease a Bike masterplan right now.

The squad is keeping faith that Tour de France dominator Vingegaard can rebound from the battered lung and broken bones he sustained at Itzulia Basque Country in the week after Van Aert was hospitalized.

Vingegaard even suggested himself in a video update Tuesday that while he’s back on the bike, his form isn’t a guarantee.

“I feel good, it’s improving day by day,” Vingegaard said via social media . “I still have some things to recover from but it’s going better and better. Of course, I hope to be there at the start of the Tour de France.

“We don’t know exactly how my shape and how my recovery will go,” he continued. “But I will do everything I can to get there in my top shape.”

Van Aert and Vingegaard’s summers could be interlinked.

The recovery of one could impact the calendar of the other as Zeeman and his staffers face decisions that might make-or-break Visma-Lease a Bike’s season.

Vingegaard or not, Visma-Lease a Bike needs WVA

Van Aert is currently dovetailing saddle time with rehab work at Belgium’s leading “LAB” facility as he looks toward the summer.

With seven and a half weeks to go until the grand départ , there’s every chance the 29-year-old will be tip-top for the Tour.

He didn’t join Tiesj Benoot, Dylan van Baarle, Matteo Jorgenson, Steven Kruijswijk, and Sepp Kuss this week on a recon of the Tour’s stage 9 gravel sectors, but that’s no surprise given he’s still got a half-dozen healing bones.

Visma-Lease a Bike will pin all its hopes on the full comeback of its Belgian “Big” as the questions continue to swirl over the status of Vingegaard.

Visma-Lease a Bike also wasn’t able to confirm Vingegaard’s pre-Tour plans to Velo on Tuesday, but the Dane admitted he’s in a race against time to match the “100 percent” benchmark that’s been set on his return to defend his maillot jaune .

Tour-bound Pogačar is currently slaying the Giro d’Italia , and yellow jersey contenders Primož Roglič and Remco Evenepoel are back to full-scale training after they also came down in the brutal Basque crash.

It will be the most competitive grand tour in years – and if Pogačar races in France the way he’s erupting the race in Italy this week, it will be intense from day one.

Top brass in Visma-Lease a Bike HQ are hopeful Vingegaard will recover fully for June 29, but the margins are looking tight.

Vingegaard already opted to skip an altitude camp this month, and a planned DNS at Critérium du Dauphiné means he likely wouldn’t race before he lines out alongside Pogačar and Co. at the grand départ in Nice.

If Vingegaard makes it to the Tour he could still be a few watts short. In which case, Visma-Lease a Bike will need to be all-guns blazing – Wout included – for its battle royale with Pogačar and his all-swinging UAE Emirates “super team”.

Van Aert could work out the cornerstone of a Visma-Lease a Bike Tour de France defense in the face of a full parade of GC powerhouses.

In the 2022 Tour, the “Swiss knife” Belgian was a GC watchdog for Vingegaard on every gradient available. And just as importantly, he served to defizz Pogačar by tempting him into wild long-range attacks, hilltop sprints, and more.

If Visma-Lease a Bike is able to pop Pogačar at this summer’s Tour in as spectacular a fashion as it did the last two summers, the option could be there for Van Aert to jump out a few days early and extend his recovery for the Olympic Games.

The Paris time trial and road races follow hot on the heels of the Tour’s big finish in Nice and are so important to Van Aert that they influenced his initial choice to debut at the Giro d’Italia.

So important, in fact, they’d be worth the tarnish of a Tour de France DNF.

And if Vingegaard doesn’t beat the ticking clock to be competitive at the Tour de France?

Van Aert gives Visma-Lease a Bike a co-captain to share the spotlight and lift the pressure from GC next-in-line Kuss.

Van Aert could run free and rampage through stages on days that #GCKuss is on pause. It would build just the right training load for him to be raging and ready for his push at his elusive first gold medal at the Games.

Van Aert spoke in a recent Visma-Lease a Bike documentary of his angst at having to watch his teammates take on Paris-Roubaix while he was banged-up and in bandages.

If he’s fit for the Tour de France, it’s hard to see WVA happily choosing to sit out the Tour de France, too.
