The Sample Essay

These days tourism is bigger than ever, and everyone has their own favorite travel style. Personally, I think it is a really great idea to travel with a partner. I feel this way for two reasons, which I will explore in the following essay.

First of all, going on a trip with a companion is more economical than vacationing alone.  As a result of leisure travel becoming more and more popular, hotel operators have raised their prices to astronomical levels.  Discounts for solo travelers are fairly uncommon nowadays, so sharing a room with a friend is an effective way to cut costs. Not only that, but people traveling in pairs have better access to package deals on tours, entrance fees and other activities.  My own experience is compelling evidence of this. When my girlfriend and I traveled together through Peru last year, we were able to rent an entire hotel room for less than the cost of two separate beds in a shared dorm. Over the course of our month-long trip, we saved several hundred dollars in this way.  Because we saved so much money, we were able to change our plans and extend our trip for almost an entire week. Had we not taken the trip together, we would not have been able to do that.

Moreover, it is much easier to talk to local people when traveling in a pair, and this makes a trip much more rewarding.  While a lone stranger can be seen as intimidating, a traveling couple is often considered more approachable. For instance, when my girlfriend and I took the trip to South America that I mentioned above, we were often welcomed into people’s homes and businesses with open arms.  The individuals who invited us often pointed out that they were willing to do so because we looked so happy, friendly and cheerful spending time together. In contrast, when I visited Bolivia by myself the previous year, I wanted to make the same kinds of connections, but it was almost impossible to achieve my goal.  It is true that a solitary traveler may actually be quite kind and outgoing, this can be somewhat difficult to determine from a distance.

In conclusion, I definitely prefer to travel with a companion rather than alone.  This is because there are significant financial benefits of doing so, and because traveling with a partner makes it easy to interact with strangers. (403 words)

Model essay #1:, some people like to travel with a companion. other people prefer to travel alone. which one do you prefer.

Some people prefer to travel with a companion, while others like to travel alone. Both options have their own merits, but I personally prefer to travel alone. There are several reasons for this preference.

Firstly, when traveling alone, I have the freedom to make decisions without having to consider someone else's preferences. I can choose where to go, what to see, and how long to stay at each place according to my own interests. This independence allows me to fully immerse myself in the experience without any compromises.

Secondly, solo travel provides an opportunity for self-discovery and personal growth. When I am alone in a new environment, I am forced to step out of my comfort zone and interact with new people, navigate unfamiliar places, and handle unexpected challenges. This builds my confidence and adaptability, helping me to become more independent and self-reliant.

Moreover, traveling alone often leads to more meaningful interactions with locals and other travelers. When I am not with a companion, I am more approachable and likely to strike up conversations with new people. This has led to some of the most memorable and enriching experiences during my travels.

In conclusion, while some people may prefer the company of a companion when traveling, I believe that the benefits of solo travel outweigh the advantages of having a companion. The freedom to make independent choices, the opportunity for personal growth, and the potential for meaningful interactions make traveling alone my preferred choice.

Model Essay #2:

While some individuals may prefer to travel alone, I personally enjoy traveling with a companion. There are several reasons for this preference.

First and foremost, traveling with a companion allows for shared experiences and moments of joy. Exploring new places and trying new activities with someone else can enhance the overall enjoyment of the trip. Whether it's sharing a beautiful sunset or trying local cuisine together, having a companion to share these experiences with can create lasting memories.

Additionally, traveling with a companion provides a sense of security and support. In unfamiliar environments, having someone by your side can offer reassurance and comfort. It also means having someone to rely on in case of emergencies or unexpected situations, which can reduce stress and anxiety during the trip.

Furthermore, traveling with a companion can lead to deeper connections and stronger relationships. The shared experiences and challenges of travel can strengthen the bond between companions and create a sense of camaraderie. It also provides opportunities for meaningful conversations and the chance to learn more about each other in a different setting.

In conclusion, while solo travel may have its benefits, I believe that traveling with a companion offers the advantages of shared experiences, a sense of security, and the opportunity to strengthen relationships. For these reasons, I prefer to have a companion when embarking on new adventures.

Ielts writing task 2 – traveling with a companion.

Some people like to travel with a companion. Other people prefer to travel alone. Which do you prefer? Use specific reasons and examples to support your choice.

( 292 Words , 22 Sentences, 4 Paragraphs, Band 9)

Some people prefer to travel with a companion. However, other people like to travel alone. Personally, I think these two options have their advantages and disadvantages. I state my opinion on the following points.

From the one side, traveling with a companion can bring many benefits. First of all, traveling with a companion is safer for several reasons. If travelers got lost in a strange city it is easier to find a way back. They can support and help each other if something happened and one of them is hurt. As for me I prefer to travel with a companion if we travel by car. I think it is very dangerous to be on a strange road by one’s self. One more reason to have a companion in a car is that they can change each other if one of them is tired. Second of all, traveling with a companion is more exciting and interesting. They can share all beautiful moments and new experiences. Finally, it helps to save some money because companions can share all expenses on gas, hotels, etc.

From the other side, traveling alone can bring many benefits too. For example, one does not have to do things he does not want to. If one is tired he does not have to go to a bar with his friend only because he does not want to leave him alone. Moreover, sometimes I personally want to be alone and enjoy all beauty around me. I can relax and contemplate about my life sitting on a beautiful cliff.

To sum up, I think traveling with a companion is better. However, sometimes I prefer to be alone by my self in a strange city. It gives me the feeling of adventure and I like that.

( NB: Follow the above writing structure for getting higher IELTS band score in the examination. This sample answer can be an example of good writing out of many possible approaches.)

Toefl writing: travel with a companion or travel a alone, which one do you prefer.

wiki toefl girl travel alone

Some people like to travel with a companion. Other people prefer to travel alone. Which do you prefer?

Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer..

Sample Essay:

Traveling alone is the only way to travel. If you take someone with you, you take your home with you. When you travel alone, you meet new people, have new experiences, and learn more about yourself.

When I traveled with my friend, I spend all my time with that friend. We eat together and sightsee together. When I travel alone, I spend my time looking for new friends. It is easy to fine other people, either other tourists or locals, to eat with or have a coffee with. When you share meals with strangers, they become friends.

When I travel with a friend, my routine is predictable. We maintain the same schedule that we do at home. When I travel alone, I adopt the rhythm of the place I visit. I might take a nap in the afternoon and eat dinner at 11 pm. I might go to a disco and dance all night.

When I travel with a friend, we know how we will react to things. When I travel alone, each new experience requires a new reaction. If I don’t try new things, I won’t be able to decide if I like something or not. Shall I ride an ostrich or eat one?

I think it is always important to do things on your own. You can fine new friends, collect new memories, and adopt different ways of doing things. Isn’t that the point of travel?

Let me preface this by saying there is no right or wrong answer. You may hear from die-hard solo travelers that you are missing out on the “true” travel experience by only venturing out with a safety net of friends. On the other side, you may hear the argument that traveling together is more efficient, economic and safe. As for which style of travel is actually better, it is all a matter of personal preference, where you are in life, and the type of trip you want to experience.

As someone who has traveled substantially as a solo female, and now together with my hubby, I am here to share some of the “pros” of each traveling style.

Traveling Alone

Traveling alone undoubtedly gives you more freedom. You are able to do what you want when you want, and you also have the increased opportunity for unplanned spontaneity.  During my travels in Cape Verde , I was sitting on the side of the road reading a book when a truck of men and women drove by.

“What are you doing?” they asked. I replied, “just enjoying the weather with a good book.” “Let’s go to Ribeira da Cruz! There is a celebration for national workers’ day.”

Knowing we were on an island where nothing was further than 3 hours away, I hopped in the back with a truckload of strangers. We rode through the winding roads of Santo Antao Cape Verde, crammed in a truck bed alongside smiling strangers, taking turns passing around a bottle of grogue (rum) and exchanging jokes. In that carefree moment spontaneity, I felt truly free and fully alive.

Freedom traveling alone

2. No Imposing Opinions

Freedom from naysayers is one of the best perks of traveling alone. Have you ever regretted not doing something during travel because someone else persuaded you not to? They may have said “that isn’t safe”, “that is too expensive”, “that sounds boring” or “you shouldn’t do that”. When traveling alone, there is no one to sway your opinion and talk you down from something that you really want to do.

(Side note: Sometimes I realize that, yes, a naysayer can be a good thing by serving as a safety measure. While in Brazil , I really wanted to go hitchhiking. I was alone and had the freedom to make this decision so off I went. I packed my backpack and hitchhiked from car to car across the country. As a young female traveling alone, I had many people telling me afterward that I was being naive and foolish, but I wanted to do it on my own so I did. I may be stubborn, but that was one of the most exciting adventures in my life).

3. Time for Introspection

Solitude will always provide the opportunity for introspection, however, traveling can sometimes amplify your ability to disconnect from everything you know and truly reflect.  There is no need to exhibit extrovert behaviors when alone, you can simply focus on observing and being present.

4. Easier to Meet People

Traveling alone makes it much easier to meet people for two reasons. 1.) You are almost forced to socialize with new people in order to get around; 2.) Others are more likely to approach you.

Have you ever seen a foreign tourist with his crinkled over-sized map, looking cluelessly at road signs, while spinning in circles trying to translate road signs? You may have felt compelled to help. Now have you ever seen a group of foreign tourists, maps in hand, pointing to things? Did you help them? It is more likely that you offered assistance to the lone tourist as opposed to the large group.

I find if a traveler is alone, others have a tendency to make sure that person is ok. Whereas if the traveler is with a companion or group of friends, passersby may assume that they will just figure it out. The same goes for meeting people in a bar or hostel. If you are alone, it is more likely that others will introduce themselves to make sure that you are ok, not bored, and feel included. When you are with someone else, others assume you are already deep in conversation and wouldn’t be interested in chatting.

5. Easier to Find “Hook-ups”

It is easier to find hook-ups, and by that, I am referring to free things, not the “getting frisky” kind of hook-up….although I suppose it might be easier to find that kind of hook-up too since you become more approachable as discussed in #4.

As I was saying, when you travel solo it seems as if discounts, free upgrades, and free anything are much more prevalent. Among other things, I have been bumped up to first class and offered free tour upgrades and show tickets. Many times this is because there is an empty seat so they prefer giving the experience to someone else at no extra cost to themselves rather than wasting it.

6. Easier to Plan

Anyone who has traveled with a large group knows the dilemma of making decisions.

“What do you want to do?” “I don’t know, what do you want to do?” “Let’s call so and so and see what they want to do.”

By the time everyone decides what they want to do, they then have to decide who is going to take a shower first and then what they should wear. If personalities are not travel-compatible, this decision-making process can take an excruciating amount of time and energy.

When you are alone there is none of that! You have the freedom to do what you want to do when you want to do it, making it infinitely easier to plan a trip.

7. Self-esteem Boost

Traveling alone is not always easy. It can be lonely without someone to share your experiences. (Plus the majority of your photos will be selfies.) Navigating unknown territory can be intimidating, scary and sometimes even unsafe. Trying to interpret an unfamiliar language can be challenging and frustrating.

When you succeed in traveling alone, it is an instant self-esteem boost. You test yourself by seeing what you are capable of and then wind up feeling like you can conquer the world.

Traveling alone to Brazil

Traveling With a Companion(s)

1. opportunity to try something new that you wouldn’t otherwise do.

Traveling with others sometimes grants you the opportunity to try something new that you wouldn’t otherwise do. Perhaps you typically only stay in hotels when you travel, but your friend prefers immersive homestay experiences. This is an opportunity for you to try something that is new and possibly intimidating with someone who is very familiar with the experience.

The more the people also means the more food you can try (assuming your companions don’t mind sharing.) I grew up eating everything family style. We all would order 1 or 2 dishes and then would taste what each other ordered. This was much better than everyone ordering the same hamburger and then not being able to taste what else the restaurant had to offer. By the way, Scott was not a sharer when we first started dating. I broke him of that habit. 😉

2. Larger Network

When you travel with others, your network is automatically doubled. Perhaps someone in your group has a contact living in the destination where you are visiting. Traveling to places where you know someone can dramatically change your experience and your budget. The more people you know potentially means the more places you can stay and the more people to show you around.

While we enjoy exploring a new city on our own, we have found it extremely helpful to have a local friend show us the best places to eat, the important sites, etc. We also enjoy hearing their own narrative of what it is like living there. It really adds to our understanding and appreciation of a place. Couch surfing has made the act of finding a host significantly easier. You have an entire network of volunteers willing to host you for a night or two and maybe even show you around.

3. Hooking up

OK, now I’m talking about the “getting frisky” kind of hook-up. Scott added this one in because he wanted to point out that sometimes someone else can make a good wingman.

4. More Cost Efficient

Costs generally scale when you travel with more than one person. For example, the cost to rent one car is the same whether there is 1 or 3 of you. The cost for one hotel room is the same whether there is 1 person or 4. If your group is large enough, you also may be able to get group discounts for things such as tours.

Many travelers have picked up on this idea and have formed travel communities for organizing tours to challenging, fascinating, and otherwise expensive destinations. Through these travel groups, solo travelers are connected with a larger group opening the door to destinations that may be hard to reach, potentially dangerous, or too expensive when going at it alone.

5. Packing Becomes Easier

The ease of packing is one factor you might not have considered, but it is certainly one perk which has come in handy on more than one occasion. During my bachelorette party, several girls had to catch a flight at 6 am. Still intoxicated from the night before, many of the girls forgot or could not fit all of their items in their suitcase. I had a later flight as well as extra room, so I was able to pack their items for them in my own luggage. In that case, packing became easier for them.

Another instance where multiple travelers come in handy is during the last minute luggage shuffling at check-in. Has the check-in attendant ever told you “I’m sorry sir, but your bag is 3 lbs over the maximum weight”? You frantically open your suitcase trying to decide which items you now have to throw away in order to meet the weight requirements. When you are traveling with others, it is more than likely that one of them will have a bit of extra space for you to shove 3 lbs of clothing into.

Traveling with a companion is always safer than traveling alone since 2 sets of eyes are better than one. While we were on a train from Manchester to London, I was napping while a rush of 4 guys ran past us. Scott woke me up to let me know that he was going to go and investigate. The 3 guys had already pinned down the other by the time Scott got there. Apparently, he was found going through the bags in the luggage car and taking things including watches, cell phones, and my camera lens. Had Scott been sleeping, we might not have ever noticed that our belongings were among those which were stolen. As I said, two sets of eyes are better than one.

safety traveling with others

7. Shared Laughs and Memories

We were in line at the movie theatre in Costa Rica and Scott asked for 2 “ensaladas” instead of “entradas”. The cashier looked at us confused. We both started cracking up when realized he had asked for 2 salads instead of movie tickets. It was a funny moment that we shared together. Now imagine had Scott been alone for this memory.

He would have returned to the USA telling his friends “Oh my goodness, you wouldn’t believe it! I was at the movie theater and asked for a salad instead of a ticket! Hahaha, isn’t that so funny?”

Blank stares.

“Yea man. Cool story.”

Traveling alone can be fun and of course, you can meet people along the way, but when it comes time to return to your country, your new friends will still be on the other side of the world. Moments and memories are best shared and it is nice to have a companion or two who you will always have to reminisce on those times together.

Ending Notes

Just as I began this article, I want to end by stating there is no right or wrong way to travel.

Traveling alone was an incredible adventure that I was happy to experience. I realize it is not for everyone and that there are many reasons for not traveling alone, many of which I mentioned above, but if your reason for not traveling is fear, then stop. Waiting for other people to go with you is just the right excuse to keep you from ever accomplishing all those things you want to do. Don’t let fear of traveling alone keep you from seeing all the marvelous wonders and adventures this world has to offer.

Having moved into the “married” stage of my life, I would say that I believe memories are best shared. I am so thankful to have found a partner that I am travel compatible with. We enjoy walking as opposed to driving. We like a good mix of local cheap eats and high-end dining. We enjoy most of the same things, but not everything.

My one final note is that even when you travel with someone, you don’t HAVE to stay together the entire time. It is ok to separate and do your own thing for a few hours and then meet back up. If you are spending mucho dollars to travel halfway across the world, you shouldn’t have any regrets. Make sure that you find time to do the things which are important to you. This strategy seems to work well for us.

Of course, thanks for giving it a read 🙂

I got the opportunity to travel solo in college and I’m so thankful I did. I went to Hawaii for a summer semester at the University of Hawaii and it was an amazing experience. Now I travel with my husband and sons and cannot travel solo anymore due to a medical condition- but I do believe everyone should try a solo trip at least once if they can!

I traveled solo once in college an it was an amazing experience! I can no longer travel alone due to a medical condition, but I’m glad I got to do it before I got sick!

That’s great that you had the opportunity to do both. I completely agree that everyone should try solo travel at least once though 🙂

Loved this blog! I’ve done both, and most of the time I prefer traveling alone as I have the freedom to do whatever I want, whenever I want. But there are certain instances where I wish there was some one special to share an incredible experience, or sometimes to be a cameraman/woman! Although you rely on your instincts and in general on yourself at times, like you said, it’s best to have another pair of eyes sometimes! Great read and thoroughly enjoyed it!

Thanks for taking the time to read through! I always appreciate the support and feedback 🙂 As someone who has done both, I totally agree with your thoughts also. I loved the freedom of traveling alone while I was single, but now that I am married, I couldn’t imagine traveling without him by my side. – Cecilia

While many people nowadays like to travel alone by contending that their trip will be more comfortable as they can do whatever that they want to, I still believe that traveling with a group is better. In this essay, I will discuss reasons and examples to support my viewpoint.

To begin with, people in a group can help each other to plan a good trip. Planning a trip is not a simple task because, even before the departure day, traveler will have to make a lot of decisions and reservations such as booking a hotel, selecting a flight, and scheduling a trip. If we have a group of people, then the tasks can be distributed among people. On the other hand, if we decide to travel alone, then we will also have to complete those tasks alone.

Second, the expense per person for a trip will be reduced when more people join the trip because the same rate of charge will be shared among the group. For example, when renting a vehicle, a person in a group of four people will have to pay only a quarter of the renting cost instead of a full of charge when driving the car alone. Other expenses such as hotel rental, food cost, and even some ticket cost are also be lower when purchased by a group of people.

Third, a group will make the trip more convenient and enjoyable because there are so many simple activities that can be done easier and happier with friends, for instance, resting in a car while one is driving, chatting whenever we want to, taking a great non-selfie photograph, and even going to a toilet while other are taking care for our belongings. The trip will also be even more memorable when we, later, spend times with friends taking about the adventure that be taken together.

In conclusion, I suggest that people go on a holiday with a group because the trip will be more convenient, cheaper, and more enjoyable.

Family Guy 's Gary Janetti to Publish New Essay Collection About Adventures Abroad: ‘You’re Welcome’ (Exclusive)

The writer’s latest book delves into his experiences traveling abroad

 Benjamin Askinas, Harper

Gary Janetti is reflecting on the ups and downs of travel in a new book. The writer and producer, 58, has shared, exclusively with PEOPLE, that his new essay collection is on the way. We Are Experiencing a Slight Delay will be published this summer by Harper, an imprint of HarperCollins. Janetti is taking readers on a romp through his worldwide travels in his latest publication. The writer will reflect on the “absurdity and glory” of his trips abroad, including a transformative stay at an Italian spa taken with his husband, celebrity stylist Brad Goreski , a family cruise on the famous Queen Mary 2 and a memorable dinner with Dame Maggie Smith .

The book will also feature the author’s meditations on places like Australia and Mykonos, as well as his own personal travel tips, like how to pack and get trip updates. Janetti will also dole out his personal restaurant recommendations.  Janetti is known for his work as a writer and producer on shows like Family Guy and Will & Grace . His viral Instagram captions, some of which imagined the inner monologues of Royal family members like Prince George , led to the 2021 premiere of his HBO show The Prince .

Janetti published his first essay collection, bestseller Do You Mind If I Cancel? , in 2019. The book detailed his young adulthood in New York, and his time working in a hotel. “It was the first time I was writing personally about myself, as opposed to writing through a character,” Janetti previously told PEOPLE of the book. “You have a bit of a distance — you’re protected by the [characters].” Janetti published his second essay collection, Start Without Me , in 2022.

We Are Experiencing a Slight Delay is poised to make the perfect travel companion, though Janetti says the book will still serve its purpose even if you’re staying home this summer.

"I spent the last year traveling and then wrote a book about it,” he tells PEOPLE of his latest collection. “Now you can go to all those places without having to leave your house. You're welcome."
