The largest town in the southern part of the Netherlands and the fifth-largest in the country, Eindhoven isn't a destination that tourists usually think of — which is a pity.

Located in a picturesque setting on the River Dommel, Eindhoven offers a number of great attractions and numerous rewarding things to do, from exploring its great museums to discovering its deep connections with famed artist Vincent Van Gogh.

Because of its connections with electronics giant Philips, Eindhoven has been given the nickname of "Lichtstad," or the City of Light. Over 130 years old, this now-massive company is one of the country's industrial powerhouses, a fact that's very much evident pretty much anywhere you go in the city.

To learn more about these and other great places to visit in the city, along with some of the best sightseeing opportunities in the Netherlands , be sure to review our list of the top attractions in Eindhoven.

The Van Abbemuseum

Founded in 1936 and housed in one of the city's most interesting modern buildings, the Van Abbemuseum is one of the most important galleries of modern and contemporary art in the Netherlands. Highlights of its more than 2,700 artworks include pieces by modern painters such as Marc Chagall and Pablo Picasso.

It's also home to the world's largest collection of material by the influential Russian artist and designer, El Lissitzky. Other notable collections include numerous sculptures and art installations.

Video works and posters can also be seen, including a large Paris collection from Jacqueline de Jong, as well as examples from the USA, Germany, and Eastern Europe. A gift shop and café are located on-site.

The DAF Museum

Eindhoven has been home to DAF, one of Europe's largest truck manufacturers, and at one time, cars, since the company's founding in 1928.

Short for Van Doorne's Aanhangwagen Fabriek, the company was founded by brothers Hub and Wim Van Doorne in a small blacksmith's shop. From humble beginnings making simple engineering products, the company gradually progressed from trailers to cars and trucks.

One of the most popular museums in the southern Netherlands, the DAF Museum is a testament to the company's success. Highlights include a replica of the original workshops and offices, along with samples of its vehicles throughout the decades, including a number of prototypes.

Guided tours are available, and a shop and restaurant are located on the premises.

The PSV Museum

Calling Eindhoven football-obsessed is an understatement. But such claims seem reasonable when you're home to Philips Sport Vereniging (PSV), one of the most successful football (soccer) franchises in Europe. And with the club fast approaching its 110th anniversary in 2024, there's plenty of history on display at the PSV Museum (PSV Musée).

Highlights of a visit include the chance to see historic outfits and artifacts as well as photos and film footage of career highlights. English-language guided tours of the team's Philips Stadium (Philips Stadion Eindhoven) are also available and include packages that take in team practices, so you can see the players in action.

Address: Stadionplein 4, 5616 RX Eindhoven, Netherlands

St. Catherine's Church during the Glow Festival

Attractive St. Catherine's Church (St. Catharinakerk) was built in Neo-Gothic style in 1867. The original building, dedicated to St. Catherine of Alexandria, was consecrated in the 13th century and was many times severely damaged by war and fire, even spending part of the 18th century as a stables and weapons store.

Now fully restored, the current structure incorporates a number of symbolic references to the work of Joseph Thijm, one of the country's best-known writers. Highlights of a visit include seeing its twin French Gothic towers, each 73 meters tall and known respectively as David and Maria.

Interior highlights include its stained-glass windows and its two organs, one of them with 5,723 pipes.

Address: Catharinaplein 1, 5611 DE Eindhoven, Netherlands

The Philips Museum

Housed near the original factory where Gerard Philips made his first incandescent light bulbs in the 1890s, the Philips Museum shows how this once-small enterprise has grown to become one of the world's largest electronics companies. A visit to this ultra-modern attraction gives visitors an excellent overview of the company's success, as well as the workings of its most memorable products.

One of the museum's most popular features is Mission Eureka, an interactive game involving digital quizzes and puzzles. There are also many other fun interactive exhibits that children enjoy. English-language guided tours of the museum and Philips-related city landmarks are available.

Art fans will also want to include the top-notch Phillips Collection on their list of must-visits in Eindhoven. Established in 1921, the museum houses a large contemporary art collection of some 3,000 works from around the world.

Guided tours are available. A café and shop are located on-site.

Address: Emmasingel 31, 5611 AZ Eindhoven, Netherlands

Van Gogh Village, Nuenen

Take a drive just eight kilometers northeast of Eindhoven and you'll come to the picture-perfect village of Nuenen.

Known as the Van Gogh Village Museum , it's famous the world over for its inclusion in the art of Vincent Van Gogh, who lived here from 1883 to 1885. His temporary home was in the pastor's house, which has been completely restored to its original style and is one of 21 historic buildings preserved on the site.

A highlight of a visit is the Vincentre . This excellent and recently expanded attraction is dedicated to the artist and his time in Nuenen, and is the focal point of many great walks following in Van Gogh's footsteps. These self-guided tours through what's referred to as The Outdoor Museum lead you to more than 20 different locations spread around the village that relate to the artist.

In addition to the latest audiovisual technology, audio commentary brings the life and times of one of Europe's most revered painters to life in a fascinating fashion.

Address: Berg 29, 5671 CA Nuenen, Netherlands

PreHistorisch Dorp (Prehistoric Village)

One of the most unusual attractions in Eindhoven, PreHistorisch Dorp , or the "Prehistoric Village," is a replica of an ancient community complete with dwellings and demonstrations of skills used by prehistoric people. This fun open-air museum recreates life from this and later eras, including Roman and early medieval times.

In North Brabant (Noord Brabant), the second largest of the Dutch provinces, agriculture was once the main livelihood before the textile, electrical, and metalworking industries blossomed after 1900. As a result, most of the settlements in the province were small hamlets and villages with farms growing crops such as rye, potatoes, oats, and fodder plants for dairy cattle.

At PreHistorisch Dorp, costumed interpreters bring the history of this province to life, going about everyday tasks and interacting with visitors in a variety of fun interactive programs and hands-on workshops. These might include learning to make a fire as prehistoric people did, baking bread on a stick, or learning how to make a Roman fibula, a form of garment pin popular 2000 years ago.

Prehistoric farming methods, hand weaving and spinning, metalwork, and other skills are also demonstrated and discussed here. Although very engaging for children, this is an experience for all ages. All signage is in English, as well as Dutch, and guided tours are available.

Address: Boutenslaan 161B, 5644 TV Eindhoven, Netherlands

GLOW and other Festivals

In mid-November each year, Eindhoven hosts an international light art festival known as " GLOW ." This popular winter event features light artists from all over the world who transform the city into a wonderland of spectacular displays of colored lights.

More than 30 illuminations transform streets and buildings each night. Perhaps the most breathtaking of all these is the illumination of the façade of Saint Catherine's Church , picking out its architectural details in different colors.

Another important annual festival is Lichtjesroute , held each autumn to mark the city's liberation from German occupation in 1944.

Eindhoven is home to a number of first-rate concert venues and theaters, including the spaceship-like Evoluon , former home of the Philips Science Center, and now a conference center and music venue known for hosting major European groups.

Address: Willemstraat 1F, 5611 HA Eindhoven

Genneper Watermill

Eindhoven is blessed with a number of excellent green spaces providing locals and visitors with ample room to relax. One of the most popular is Genneper Parken. This nearly 500-acre green space is set in a pretty location on the Tongelreep and Dommel rivers in a valley conservation area.

You'll have fun exploring its well-marked, meandering trails to discover such landmarks as the Genneper Watermill and the neighboring Environmental Education Center , with exhibits relating to the area's flora and fauna.

Also noteworthy is City Park (Stadswandelpark), a popular place for a stroll thanks to its 30 unique sculptures. You'll also wander past monuments such as the Radio Monument, celebrating the first radio communications with the Dutch East Indies in 1927.

Address: Antoon Coolenlaan 1, Eindhoven, Netherlands

Lemurs at the Dierenrijk Zoo

If you're looking for things to do with the family, Dierenrijk Zoo is a great place to visit. Here, the emphasis is on up-close encounters and interactions with the resident wildlife. Children can get close to such appealing animals as the red panda, and can feed many of them.

Elephants and seals perform, and glass walls allow close encounters even with large animals like bears and tigers. Visitors can walk through the bird enclosure. There are playgrounds and exhibits indoors and outside, so this is an all-weather attraction.

Address: Baroniehei 1, 5731 RG Mierlo, Netherlands

The Inkijkmuseum is not only one of Eindhoven's most interesting museums, it's also certainly the city's smallest. Literally translated as a "look-in" museum, it's housed in what was the washhouse of a former linen factory. The ground floor of this fascinating little museum is viewed by peeking through its windows at the often-changing artworks inside.

Another art-related home to visit is the Ton Smits Huis , a museum in the former studio of one of the Netherlands' most famous cartoonists.

Address: Jacob Reviuslaan 25, Eindhoven, Netherlands

If you're visiting Eindhoven for the first time, the best place to stay is in the city center. Most of the top attractions in Eindhoven cluster in this compact area within a short stroll or drive from each other, including the Van Abbemuseum, St. Catherine's Church, and the Eindhoven Museum. Here are some highly-rated hotels in convenient locations you may want to consider:

Luxury Hotels:

  • A short stroll from the Van Abbemuseum, the artsy Pullman Eindhoven Cocagne resides in a contemporary glass and steel building. The luxury De Heuvel mall is just across the street.
  • Also sleek and contemporary in style, the Park Plaza Eindhoven is set in a quiet, central location steps away from the Van Abbemuseum. It has a heated indoor swimming pool, two Finnish saunas, and a small gym.
  • You can walk across the street to Eindhoven Central Station from the Holiday Inn Eindhoven . This IHG group hotel offers simply-styled modern rooms and a swimming pool. The hotel is only a short walk to the city center and 500 meters from PSV Stadium.

Mid-Range Hotels:

  • Right in the center of the action and only an eight-minute walk from Eindhoven Central Station, the trendy Inntel Hotels Art Eindhoven occupies a 1909 factory building with plenty of glass and brooding black accents. Breakfast is included.
  • Even closer to the train station, near restaurants and shops, the Crown Hotel Eindhoven Centre offers clean, compact rooms a five-minute walk from the Philips Museum and PSV stadium.
  • On the market square in the town center, Queen Hotel Cafe Restaurant is also only a five-minute walk from the Philips Museum.

Budget Hotels:

  • The pet-friendly Sandton Hotel Eindhoven City Centre , with clean, crisp rooms, is at the top end of the budget category, while the Hotel Benno , also in the heart of the city, is cheap and cheerful.
  • About a seven-minute walk to the Philips Stadium, in a part of the old Philips factory, Blue Collar Hotel has an edgy industrial vibe and an on-site theater and restaurant.

weekendje eindhoven tips

The city of Eindhoven, located in the southern Netherlands, is the fifth largest city in the country and a mere stone’s throw from Belgium. With strong design, technological, and creative ties, the city is both progressive and exciting, and there is no shortage of such things to do in Eindhoven.

Eindhoven’s a got a secret. It’s the 2nd most accessible city in the Netherlands for tourists. With the 2nd biggest international airport in the country (6,8 million passengers in 2019), Eindhoven is still an off-the-beaten track destination in Europe.

Eindhoven is a major city in the province of North Brabant in the Netherlands . With a population of over 230,000 people (2019), it's the fifth-largest city of the Netherlands. It is by no means a main tourist destination in the country and most travel guides will devote no more than a page or two to it. Nevertheless, this bustling and modern city has a lot more to offer.

Eindhoven's history is dominated by industrial development and is inextricably linked to electronics giant Philips and, to a lesser degree, DAF Trucks. Although those industries have mostly disappeared, Eindhoven remains a European technology hub, hosting a technical university and many technology companies and cooperation initiatives. In addition, over the past decade the city has become the capital of Dutch design.

Understand [ edit ]

tourism companies eindhoven

Until the beginning of the 20th century, Eindhoven was no more than a village. Less than a century later its number of inhabitants had boomed to over 200,000. The main reason for this tremendous increase in size was the establishment of electronics multinational Philips, which was founded as a light bulb manufacturing company in 1891 and was headquartered in Eindhoven until 1997. As Philips grew, the city of Eindhoven grew with it to feed the company's constantly growing need for workers. Philips' strong presence in the city gained it the title of "Lichtstad" (City of Light) and is still prominent today, as many of its former buildings are considered valuable industrial heritage and have been renovated. Frits Philips (1905–2005), who led the company for decades, was the city's main benefactor and was extremely popular among the people of Eindhoven. When walking the streets of Eindhoven today, you'll find his and other names associated with Philips everywhere. Parks, theatres, sports facilities and many streets are named in their honor.

Although Eindhoven is an old city, with town and market rights already awarded in 1232, little of this long history is visible when exploring its centre today. Large parts of the city were destroyed during air raids in World War II and post-war reconstruction was focused on ambitious, modernist plans with little respect for the historic heritage that was left. Nevertheless, there are 140 national heritage sites ( Rijksmonumenten ) in and directly around the city, including many 19th- and early 20th-century buildings and a handful of older ones.

History [ edit ]

Looks can be deceiving, when it comes to Eindhoven's history. Modern as the city is today, it is in fact one of the oldest towns in the Netherlands. Henry I, Duke of Brabant, already chartered the then little village of "Endehoven" in 1232, as part of his extensive town planning process. Eventually the town established itself as a trading stop between Holland and Liège. Its early industrial activities centred on tobacco and textiles.

The city was destroyed and rebuilt several times in its written history. Despite late 14th-century improvements to its fortifications and the establishment of a castle within the city walls in the 15th century, Eindhoven was plundered and burned by the Guelders in 1486. No more than 6 houses remained. Rebuilding took almost 20 years and left the town in poverty, with the fortifications being neglected. This resulted in another plundering in 1543. That same year, a fire ruined most of the city. During the Dutch Revolt, control of Eindhoven repeatedly alternated between the Dutch and Spanish, the city was burned down again, besieged for 3 months, and finally captured by Spanish troops in 1583. When the French armies took over the already weakened city some years later, large parts of it were destroyed yet again. In 1629, Eindhoven became part of the Netherlands for good, but its tumultuous history left it a damaged and minor city.

This would change with the beginning of the Industrial Revolution. Due to the presence of Philips, DAF trucks and some other major industry, Eindhoven developed as a major player in the global technology and industrial design scene. It is considered to be the epicentre of Dutch design with such institutions as the Design Academy and the Dutch Design Week that takes place every October.

Climate [ edit ]

The temperate climate is pleasant in Eindhoven. Due to its location, the average temperatures of this city are slightly higher and the rainfall is just slightly lower than the average of the rest of the Netherlands. However, it remains a coastal climate with mild, wet winters and cool summers. Daylight hours run between 05:30 and 21:45 in the summer, and from 08:45 to 16:30 in the winter.

For the train between Schiphol and Rotterdam a surtax of €2.90 needs to be bought on top of the regular ticket Schiphol - Eindhoven, These trains connecting in Rotterdam do not have a cross platform interchange, take longer to Eindhoven, are less reliable and usually busier.

If you're driving to Eindhoven, local access from the highways is provided by the N2 "Randweg", which runs in parallel along the A2 and A67 highways around Eindhoven. Look for "Randweg N2" early on when approaching Eindhoven to avoid having to make substantial detours, or use an up-to-date navigation system.

As in all larger Dutch cities, parking in the city centre is quite expensive and during rush hours the main streets can be jammed.

There is however a Park & Ride service operating next to exit 31 of the N2. This service, called P+R Meerhoven (Page in Dutch) , costs €4 for the first 24 hours. From here, lines 18, 401 and 402 provide a frequent bus service to the city centre, with retour bus tickets to the city centre costing €0.50 per person. The bus and parking tickets can be bought on-site at the machine using a debit or credit card.

Get around [ edit ]

Map

The city centre is largely car-free and small enough to get around on foot. If you're headed for the outskirts or surrounding villages, take the bus or rent a bike.

Eindhoven has an bus network where most lines start and end at the train station. It is possible to pay your trip by tapping your debit or credit card when entering and exiting the bus ( OVpay , €1.08 + €0.188 per km, 2023). It is also still possible to buy the older OV-chipkaart , a prepaid travel card (same price as OVpay) or buy a single use paper ticket with your debit card at the bus driver (€4.80 for each bus, 2023). You can plan your trip in advance using the trip advisor of Hermes bus company which serves bus transport in the Eindhoven region.

When you're out shopping in the city centre, use the free guarded bike parks under the 18 Septemberplein (entrance in the middle of the square, open M-Sa 08:00-23:30) or in the basement of the Heuvelgalerie (entrance on the north-west corner, M-Th 08:00-20:00, F Sa 08:00-04:30). Parks and gardens [ edit ]

Despite its industrial character, Eindhoven is the "greenest" of the five largest cities in the country. Even within the province of North-Brabant, it is the greenest of the top five cities there. The park and grass fields around Lake Karpendonck make a great place for a summer picnic. If you're up for a stroll, try the City Walking Park ( Stadswandelpark ), at walking distance from the centre and decorated with some 30 sculptures. Just south of the Stadswandelpark lie the larger Genneper Parks where nature and recreational activities come together (see above under "Do"). Within the Genneper Parks you'll find the Heempark Frater Simon Deltour , with example gardens showing original regional landscape types and natural habitat. The Philips van Lenneppark in the north of the city was named after Frits Philips' wife, whose maiden name was van Lennep. The family donated the park to the city for the 75 year anniversary of the Philips company. It houses a playground, skate park and petting zoo. Older is the Philips de Jonghpark just 1 km to the north between the Oirschotsedijk and the railway. This park was donated in 1920 by Anton Philips (the father of Frits) and his wife, whose maiden name was De Jongh. In the middle of the park is a pavilion for drinks and snacks.

Buy [ edit ]

Eindhoven is the regional centre for shopping, and offers a wide range of large and small stores, including all the large chains in the Netherlands and a good number of small speciality shops. As it is hardly a touristic city, traditional souvenirs are relatively hard to come by. The VVV tourist information office in the train station has some Dutch and Eindhoven oriented gadgets. Light bulb cartoons and similar images are a typical reference to Eindhoven's history in lightning. Also, museum shops will have some gift items relevant for their exhibitions.

Opening hours [ edit ]

With some exceptions, shops close at 18:00 on weekdays and 17:00 on Saturdays, like in the rest of the country. Friday is "buying-evening" in the city centre, with shops open until 21:00. Shops are now allowed to be open on Sunday and most of the shops in the city centre indeed open every Sunday from 12:00 to 17:00. Most places in shopping centre Woensel XL open only the first and last day Sunday of the month, and keep similar hours. You'll find that businesses in the other districts typically remain closed on Sundays, with the exception of bars and restaurants.

The following streets form the main, pedestrianised shopping area: 18 Septemberplein, Nieuwe emmasingel (admirant), Demer, Rechtestraat, de Markt, Nieuwstraat, Hermanus Boexstraat, Vrijstraat and Hooghuisstraat.

  • 51.43921 5.4801 1 De Heuvelgalerie . Placed between the central station and the market square, is a covered shopping mall with a broad selection of stores. You'll find anything from clothing and shoes till toys, a bike store and a Mac retail shop.
  • If you're looking for somewhat more exclusive fashion, try the Hooghuisstraat . It has a bunch of good boutiques and fashion stores.
  • 51.44173 5.47665 2 Piazza Center . On the 18 Septemberplein is a modern, covered 3-storey shopping area with a bunch of clothing and shoes stores and others. Here you'll also find de Bijenkorf , one the largest and most exclusive department stores in the Netherlands and Zara, Ici paris XL, a fairly large beauty store.
  • 51.43997 5.47618 3 Admirant shopping . An old part of Eindhoven's centre that has had a complete facelift. This part used to be primarily known for the old headquarters of Philips and the lamp factory (now a museum). Now it is a trendy shopping area with the glass structure "the Blob" and a new shopping street while keeping the little piece of Eindhoven's history intact. The street has a mix of large chains like Selexyz, Dept, Douw Egberts, but also smaller design stores like Janissima temporary concept store, Onigiri Art on T-shirts and Van Bommel Shoes.

Outside the centre [ edit ]

  • When exiting the train station on the North side, it is a 5-minute walk to the Kruisstraat . In this internationally oriented street the shops include Turkish, Asian and other foreign supermarkets. On the square at end of the Kruisstraat, The Woenselse Markt, a fairly large weekly market is held on Saturdays.
  • A few kilometres north of the centre, in the district Woensel, lies shopping centre Woensel XL . This large and semi-covered shopping centre offers a broad range of retail stores, mostly chains, making it a good alternative location for a general shopping spree. One advantage is the ample (but paid) parking space.

Eat [ edit ]

You'll find plenty of restaurants in the city centre. Main restaurant areas are the Dommelstraat (almost directly opposite the train station), the Markt and the Bergen kwartier, comprising both the Kleine Berg and the Grote Berg. As for other Dutch cities, you can find restaurant information and customer reviews on several (private) websites, e.g. TheFork.nl or Eet.nu . They are mostly in Dutch, but numerical ratings will give you an idea of popularity at least. Many restaurants are closed on Mondays and some close down for a week or two during summer.

Budget [ edit ]

All these are in the city centre:

  • 51.43788 5.479992 1 Friture Dik & Lang , Jan van Lieshoutstraat 28 . Fast food is an unhealthy but cheap dinner option. "Fritures" serving fries and snacks are common, but Dik & Lang is reportedly the best one in the city centre. If you're not a huge mayonnaise fan, make sure to mention that as you might find all of your fries covered in it. ( updated Aug 2023 )

Popular place for take away wok (Asian stir fry dishes with noodles or rice) or sushi, but you can also eat in the restaurant. Think fast food place with an Asian touch. A simple stir-fry dish served in a cardboard cup is a cheap but quite filling meal. Drink [ edit ]

Bars and eateries's opening times in the city centre are usually until 02:00 during the week, and 04:00 on a Friday and Saturday. Student-nights in Eindhoven are Thursdays. The city's late nightlife mostly takes place in Stratumseind, a street literally filled with bars and fast food places, and the Market Square. The Stationsplein and adjoining Dommelstraat has a few bars too and for a less main stream experience, try the places on the Kleine and Grote Berg which are also more popular with an artistic crowd. Main party days are Thursday to Sunday, and you might find some places to be closed on other days.

De Markt [ edit ]

On a sunny day, the Grand Café terraces on the Market Square fill up in no time. This is the heart of the city, where the shopping crowd sits down for a break, colleagues drink an after work beer and friends meet over coffee or cocktails. You'll find a number of places on and around the Square. Most of them also serve meals, which is why some are listed above under "Eat".

  • 51.43814 5.47972 1 O-Sheas ( Irish pub ), Jan van Lieshoutstraat 9 , ☏ +31 40 246 62 13 . Just off the main square, this place has a great atmosphere, great beer, live music at the weekend after 22:30. Sports events, especially football, are shown on two big screens.
  • 51.43911 5.47897 2 De Vooruitgang , Markt 11 , ☏ +31 40 243 39 95 , [email protected] . This "City-café" is quite similar to the ones next to it, but a long time favorite and repeatedly listed as having the best terrace in the city. They also serve food, but to choose from the full menu you have to take a table in the 1st floor restaurant. After about 22:00 the music volume is turned up.
  • The Little One , J v Lieshoutstrt. 26 , ☏ +31 40 243 89 95 . Extremely small and somewhat harder to find pub, specialised in cocktails and whiskey. ( updated Jul 2016 )

Stationsplein and Dommelstraat [ edit ]

The Stationsplein lies directly across the street from the train station. It has some "Grand cafés", dancing bars and terraces. The Dommelstreet with all its restaurants is a side-street of the Stationsplein and has a bunch of good bars too. All the way at the end of the Dommelstreet you'll find the Effenaar, Eindhoven's main popular music music stage.

Stratumseind [ edit ]

tourism companies eindhoven

Go for a pub-crawl in the longest pub-street in the Netherlands. With over 40 bars and a number of places to eat, Stratumseind is Eindhoven's main nightlife area. Bar-hopping is the best way to get the Stratumseind-vibe. Its venues attract renowned DJs on a regular basis and when the weather allows the street becomes part of the party ground. The eating places stay open late, even after the bars close, to allow for the essential bite afterwards. The bars include:

  • De Bier Professor , Stratumseind 33 , ☏ +31 6 553 555 72 . Specialist of Belgium beers, with a 100 different kinds to choose from.
  • Santiago de Cuba , Stratumseind 65 , ☏ +31 40 206 96 06 . closed on M & W . For an evening of Latin-American fun, move on the rhythm of Cuban Salsa in this Cuban swing café.

De Bergen [ edit ]

'De Bergen' is a piece of old Eindhoven, which is still in reasonably original condition. The pleasant bars and restaurants on the 'Kleine Berg' are popular with the more artistic members of the public. It is a few minutes' walk through the narrow streets to Wilhelminaplein.

Wilhelminaplein [ edit ]

In this characteristic square there are authentic brown bars, terraces and live-performances. In summer, open-air performances are regularly organized. Every Sunday afternoon and Monday evening stunning live performances are given at café Wilhelmina.

Sleep [ edit ]

Hotel rooms are abundantly available in the city, mainly serving an international business crowd visiting the many technology initiatives. With the exception of major soccer matches in the PSV stadium, Eindhoven rarely runs out of places to stay. Most accommodation is offered by large chains in the city centre and doesn't come cheap. Listed minimum prices can be significantly higher when the cheaper rooms are all taken, so check actual prices on the hotel or booking websites. Prices are often lower in the weekends. In many cases, €3.50 tourist tax and breakfast are not yet included.

If you're on a budget, check out the bed & breakfasts. These are smaller places which are often cheaper than the hotels (some starting around €30) but many of them don't have a website. Alternatively, consider the villages surrounding the city where you will find some smaller hotels and campsites. The best place to start is at the VVV [dead link] (tourist info) office just outside Eindhoven Central Station or on their website.

Stay safe [ edit ]

Eindhoven, as with much of the Netherlands , is safe for the most part. However, up until the late 2000s, the city had the unfortunate reputation of being the country's "murder capital". Though an exaggerated moniker, it did highlight crime rates that were quite high by western European standards. Nowadays you should not have any problems if you know how to be street-smart. The Woensel section, in the north-northwest of the city, has been described as sketchy and seedy by locals and the media, but it has no touristic appeal.

Connect [ edit ]

Eindhoven has good 4G/5G coverage from all Dutch carriers. Wifi is widely available in public places.

  • Fill in the proof of sponsorship and/or private accommodation form . Fill in one form for each person you want to sponsor. In some municipalities you can do this online. Please note: both the form and the website state that this is intended for visitors who need a visa. But the form can also be used for visitors who do not need a visa.
  • Have your municipality legalise your signature on the form. The form is then valid for 6 months. Are you sponsoring a visitor who does not need a visa? Then you do not need to have your signature legalised.
  • Collect all the other documents required (see the paragraph below).
  • Send the form and all the documents required to your foreign visitor.
  • After receiving it, your visitor can apply for a visa abroad. If your visitor does not need a visa, they should take the documents with them to the Netherlands and show them to border control officers.

Other documents required

You must send the following documents with the sponsorship form to your foreign visitor:

You have an employment contract and want to sponsor a visitor

  • a copy of your employment contract. The contract must be valid for at least 12 months from the date of the visa application.
  • an employer’s declaration
  • a copy of your last 3 salary statements
  • a copy of your passport or ID card, or Dutch residence permit

You run your own business and want to sponsor a visitor

  • a recent extract proving your registration with the Chamber of Commerce
  • your most recent final income tax assessment
  • a recent profit and loss account, showing your net profit

You receive a pension or benefit and want to sponsor a visitor

  • proof of income showing that you will receive the pension or benefit for at least another 12 months. Do you receive a benefit that is paid from general resources, such as a social assistance benefit, benefit under the Participation Act or a Wajong benefit? Then you cannot sponsor a visitor.

The trip was great! Had a great tour guide, saw some great sights and learned a lot.
We enjoyed the nature and flowers and canals. The accommodation was good and the Fletcher hotels very peaceful in the country.

The operator needs guides with better communication skills in English; I didn’t care that much because I spoke Spanish and was able to supplement any information given in English by asking later in Spanish. But I know for sure the English speakers guests were unsatisfied with some of the guides because of lack of command of the English language, and poor substantive knowledge about the places we were visiting. This feeling became more evident once that interacted with a guide named Jacobo, who was superb and knowledgeable. It left us wishing we had him as our tour guide. As to the local guides, with the exception of Mathias in Budapest and the guy in Prague, all the others were unsatisfactory at best. Romania in Vienna was even kind of rude. As to the visits, we could have spent more time in more gratifying activities (e.g., the windmill village) vs. less interesting activities (e.g., the diamond store).
TRAVELERS IF YOU SPEAK ENGLISH ONLY THIS MAY NOT BE THE TRIP/COMPANY FOR YOU! If you are ready to spend most of the time on a bus, and very little time in the places they advertise. The guides we had were not organized, or gave very little history on the places we did visit. Guides often referring to Google for history of the places we went. Gave more information in Spanish. If you don't speak Spanish this can be very confusing and frustrating. Explanations for the times returning to meet to return to the bus NOT ALWAYS CLEAR, God forbid if you were late arriving at the bus, often RUDE TO THE TRAVELERS. Some of the bus drivers were giving the guides explanations, and history of the places we were passing though, but the guides not passing the information on to us. Also what they needed to do when crossing borders, having strangers on the bus helping them sort out our passports and other personal information! Excursions that I paid, BEING CHARGED 25$ EUR MORE THAN THE EXCUSION WAS LISTED FOR, the company DID NOT HAVE THEM ON THIER LIST!! I HAD IT ON MY "MY TRIP" When asked about this, I was told the Company "Boss" didn't know anything about these situations, trips, or times, "that they just drive their fancy cars!" Being told that we would be reimbursed for excursions but NEVER HAPPENED! Trying to contact the company about this situation, but NEVER getting an answer.

Well organized and well executed tour.
The tour itself was interesting and enjoyable. There should be more transparency about approximately how much free time is available in each city. The big negative for me was the tour director made some racially targetted comments about Indians which were not appropriate in any day or age. I am highly disappointed that I have paid thousands of dollars to be on this tour and had to listen to people of my race being mocked and belittled by the person leading the tour. The comments weren't targeted at me but still targetted at people of my ethnicity. Why am I being made to feel inferior because of my ethnicity? Disgraceful behaviour. I would recommend this tour but not the tour director we had.

Uniworld Boutique River Cruise Collection

Uniworld Boutique River Cru…

  • Excellent - 79 reviews for Netherlands tours
A friend recommended Uniworld to me and I'm glad he did. What a wonderful experience it was. The boat, the staff, the food, the scenery - everything exceeded my expectations. And you could be as active or laid back as you desired. I started each day joining the exercise class on the top deck. There were daily walking tours of the local town or village where we were moored, a strenuous hike for the more adventurous and a bike ride between towns. Bicycles were available to use at any time and many did meander up and down the bike paths along the river. I was travelling alone and had no trouble mixing and dining with the other guests, even though I am a little shy when it comes to social situations. I am looking forward to my next Uniworld experience, the difficulty being, which one will I choose!
I absolutely love the cruise. The staff on board especially. They were so kind and took care of everything we might need. The tour locations were beautiful and interesting. Can’t wait to save up for another.

We had a fabulous time on our Bike and Barge tour. The ship was lovely the tour guide and staff excellent. Would highly recommend.
It’s not a novice bike tour without an ebike. But the guides were terrific.

CroisiEurope River Cruises

CroisiEurope River Cruises

  • Excellent - 316 reviews for Netherlands tours
Excellent way to finish off our traveling holiday. Very happy with the cruise, great crew, good food, (except my wife would have preferred some smaller options at lunchtimes) excellent destinations but the choices of excursions were a little bland when doing them, plus NO bike options that were also mentioned within your itinerary?? I have no hesitation in recommending river cruising as it is a great way to travel and meet new people. many thanks again from us here in New Zealand
Good value with excellent service and food

Avalon Waterways

Avalon Waterways

  • Excellent - 226 reviews for Netherlands tours
Great service, good guides, excellent food
When compared to other river cruises on which I have travelled, service on Avalon is less caring. Food is ok but not super. Worst of all, notwithstanding the prevalence of seasonal flu, they did nothing about guests talking avidly without mask while at the buffet table selecting food. Nor were coughing and sneezing customers asked to wear mask while in the bus, boat trips or at briefings. As a result, a number of passengers including my husband and I developed very bad flu towards the end of the trip.

I would not recommend Fenniks. We had to ride in a row like little ducklings behind a 70 year old guide. The food provided was not very good. To bring our own bottle of wine on board, we were charged $10.
Experience was good.
