Discovering the power of student government: ‘What can ASBSU do for you?’

Have you ever learned a fun fact and immediately found yourself sharing it with others? This is the same kind of excitement that junior Makena Chase exudes when talking about the Associated Students of Boise State University ( ASBSU ).

Chase anticipates graduating in December 2025 with her bachelor’s in nursing. She is a College of Health Sciences ASBSU senator alongside social work major Typhene Bulape Mishambo.

Two women hold pom-poms and hold a flier for donating to the Unbridled Campaign.

Representing two different areas of the college “helps us reach out to more students,” Chase said, which is important as they strive to be a voice for student opinion.

First stepping into the position in August 2023, Chase said she “loved it so much” that she ran for re-election. She and Bulape Mishambo both won their seats again and are already planning for the fall.

“One of the goals that I’m going into next semester with is helping to make students aware of the resources that they have, but also asking them ‘Are these resources benefiting you?’” Chase said.

Chase doesn’t want decision-makers – including ASBSU – to assume they know what’s in students’ best interest without hearing from the students directly.

“We think that we have all these great things for students and we’re doing so well. But if we don’t ask them, we won’t know what they think they need or what they want us to direct our attention towards, right?” she said. “It just goes back to actually being able to have students have a voice in things that their money is going toward…I think it’s super important.”

Starting with awareness

Many students are not aware that part of their regular student fees fund student government . So any fee-paying student is eligible to vote in elections. But only 12.3% of eligible voters from the student body participated this spring .

Headshot of Makena Chase

A lack of awareness – about what ASBSU is and why it matters – may be the reason for low involvement. Chase wants to boost awareness through transparency and communication. These may seem like generalized goals, but she has specific ways to achieve them.

While increasing visible messages across campus (whether through posters or electronic billboard-style ads) are broad approaches, “I also think it starts small,” Chase said.

She knows the significance of word-of-mouth communication and values one-on-one conversations.

“Even just having smaller communications with individual students or smaller groups of people has been really effective, and just letting people know that these resources are there for them,” Chase said.

What can ASBSU do for you?

So what resources does ASBSU have?

Their funding board can allocate money toward student organizations that submit requests. Thanks to her involvement with ASBSU, Chase also learned that students have access to free legal advice and an emergency fund for individuals.

Six individuals pose together in their Special Olympics t-shirts.

“Say you have a medical condition that arises and you miss school or you miss work, but you need to pay for tuition or you need to pay for rent, you can apply for the student emergency fund,” Chase explained.

ASBSU can also help students launch initiatives that they’re passionate about. “For example, we passed a bill that helped the [Boise State University’s] Children’s Center host parenting workshops for college students who are also parents,” Chase recalled.

Her goal is to better connect students with ASBSU and their resources so they can make the most of what’s available to them.

“If you do have initiatives that you’re pursuing, or you have an opinion about a specific thing on campus or in your program or with your student population, please, please feel free to reach out to me,” she said.

Part of community awareness is having a specific person students feel they can contact, and Chase wants to be that person. Email her at [email protected] .

Balancing classes, clubs and committees

In Chase’s experience, student government can get lost in the chaos of all the clubs, classes and community in students’ lives.

“If you’re in the nursing program, it’s really hard to be active in other things,” she said. “We have so much going on in the program alone.”

But aside from ASBSU, Chase is also a member of the Student Nurses Association ; she competes with the Business Professionals of America in the health administration category; and as the founder and president of the Special Olympics Club, she recently won the 2024 Presidential Innovation Award.

How does she do it all?

“I won’t lie, it’s definitely hard,” Chase said. “But I think one of the biggest things was learning how to say no.”

Chase wants to give 100% of her time and energy to her commitments. So even though she has many varied interests, she’s learned to focus on the areas that mean the most to her.

“At the end of the day, committing to things that you really love doing makes it a lot easier because it doesn’t feel necessarily like a commitment or a burden,” she said. “You’re excited to work on it.”

Bronco Stampede, an event promoting BSU athletics statewide, visits Twin Falls

TWIN FALLS, Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) — On Saturday at Canyon Springs Golf Course, the Boise State Athletic Department held the second leg of its Bronco Stampede tour.

The Bronco Stampede is in its first year and is an event designed to promote Boise State athletics across the entire state.

To help promote this event the athletic department enlisted some student athletes which included women’s golfers Brooke Patterson and Leia Chung . As well as football players Ahmed Hassanein and Marco Notarainni who signed autographs for fans after the speaking portion of the event.

The speaking portion featured a panel of athletic department staff highlighted by first year football head coach Spencer Danielson who spoke on topics like NIL, the transfer portal and the upcoming season, as well as the focus of this new stampede event.

“Because it’s not just the Treasure Valley’s football team or athletic department, we want it to be Idaho’s football team and athletic department. That’s near and dear to my heart. We’re going into year eight [for me] at Boise State football and the state itself has opened their arms to me and my family and I want Twin Falls, I want the Magic Valley to feel that. So, we need to continue to find even more opportunities to come around here because I want everyone in the Magic Valley to feel like that’s my football team,” Danielson said.

There are still three more events in the Bronco Stampede across the state concluding with the final event on the blue at Albertson’s Stadium in mid-May.

Griffin Wood on where he’s played most of his professional golf to this point… “I've got a lot of mini tours in the U.S., played on the Dakotas Tour, I played everywhere, APT a little bit, the Asher Tour out in Phoenix and I played (PGA TOUR) Canada two years ago. I had conditional, so I played there half a season. Last year I had conditional, but I didn't get into anything. Yeah, so mostly in the U.S. I've been playing full time for about five years in total even though I'm a little older. I had to take some time off. A little later progression.”

Wood on what was behind his extended break from professional golf… “ I had a back injury where I couldn't play for a couple years. When I came back, I was not shooting 60s on courses. I had to work to support myself and try and get my game back and try and play as much as I could. I played one year out of college. So I graduated in 2012, played for a year. Played pretty well, like was ‑‑ so I kind of proved to myself I could do it in small mini tours. Then I got hurt right before Q‑School right out of college, it would have been 2013. Then I was off for a couple years and was kind of pedaling around for a while. I've been back for the last four, I'd say, playing pretty full time and trying to get back.”

Wood on the playoff at Monday’s open qualifier… “I was playing solid golf and I bogeyed my last hole in regulation. It was a pretty easy hole, and I was pretty devastated because I thought that would be the difference. But I rebounded really well, because after I made that bogey, you know, you can go south quick. Me and another guy, Matt Atkins, birdied the first hole in a 5‑for‑2 (playoff). I had my head on straight, that was the big thing, and I was able to play right after I finished. I went right to the playoff hole, which helped. We finished in the dark, we didn't have any more time to play another hole and it worked out perfectly.”

Additional Player Notes

 • Trent Phillips (3rd/-16) follows career-low 10-under 61 with 6-under 65 and shatters his previous career-low 36-hole score of 132/2023 BMW Charity Pro-Am presented by TD SYNNEX
 • Tim Widing (4th/-15), who won last week’s LECOM Suncoast Classic, has four holes remaining in his second round and is one of three Korn Ferry Tour winners in the top 10 of the leaderboard
 • The only other Korn Ferry Tour winners in the current top 10 of the leaderboard are Kyle Jones (T5/-12) and Andrew Kozan (T5/-12)
 • Amateur Preston Stout (T11/-11), who attended J.J. Pearce High School in nearby Richardson, Texas, follows 4-under 67 with 7-under 64; he is a freshman at Oklahoma State University who earned co-medalist honors Wednesday at the 2024 Big 12 Conference Championship, and is making his first PGA TOUR-sanctioned start
 • Arlington, Texas native, University of Texas-Arlington alum and conditional member Caleb Hicks (T39/-8), competing as a sponsor exemption, is 5-under through 10 holes in his second round and seeking his first made cut in what is his second career Korn Ferry Tour start (MC/2024 Astara Chile Classic)
 • Reigning champion Spencer Levin (T90/-5) finishes two strokes off the current projected 36-hole cut line of 7-under 135
 • Miles Russell (T102/-4), a 15-year-old amateur who became the youngest player to make a cut in Korn Ferry Tour history at last week’s LECOM Suncoast Classic, makes a late run at the cut line with birdies at the par-4 seventh and eighth, but closes with bogey at par-5 ninth for second-round 1-under 70

Hulu's docuseries Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story , spends a lot of time building up the Bon Jovi legend — exploring the band's almost unbelievable 40-plus-year run from playing hardscrabble rock clubs in New Jersey to earning platinum albums and entry into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

But what moved me most in the four-part series was something more revealing: its close look at the struggle by lead singer Jon Bon Jovi to overcome vocal problems which nearly led him to quit the band.

Footage of the singer croaking through vocal exercises, undergoing laser treatments, enduring acupuncture and finally turning to surgery is sprinkled throughout the series, which toggles back and forth between his problems in 2022 and a chronological story of the band's triumphs and tragedies from its earliest days.

Refusing to be Fat Elvis

Jon Bon Jovi was interviewed for Thank You, Goodnight.

Through it all, a question hangs: Will Bon Jovi ever recover enough vocal strength to lead a 40th anniversary tour?

"If I can't be the very best I can be, I'm out," he tells the cameras, still looking a bit boyish despite his voluminous gray hair at age 62. "I'm not here to drag down the legacy, I'm not here for the 'Where are they now?' tour ... I'm not ever gonna be the Fat Elvis ... That ain't happening."

Filmmaker Gotham Chopra — who has also directed docuseries about his father, spiritualist Deepak Chopra, and star quarterback Tom Brady — digs deeply into the band's history, aided by boatloads of pictures, video footage and early recordings provided by the group.

Former Bon Jovi guitarist Richie Sambora in Thank You, Goodnight

Chopra gets folks from the group's tight inner circle to speak up, including former manager Doc McGhee and guitarist Richie Sambora, who quit the band in 2013. ("Are we telling the truth, or are we going to lie, what are we going to do?" Sambora cracks to his offscreen interviewer. "Let's figure it out.")

But anyone expecting gossipy dish will walk away disappointed. Even major scandals in the band's history are handled with care, including the firing of founding bassist Alec John Such in 1994 (and the admission that his replacement, Hugh McDonald, already had been secretly playing bass parts on their albums for years), drummer Tico Torres' stint in addiction treatment and Sambora's decision to quit midway through a tour in 2013, with no notice to bandmates he had performed alongside for 30 years.

Sambora's explanation: When issues with substance use and family problems led him to miss recording sessions, Bon Jovi got producer John Shanks to play more guitar on their 2013 record What About Now . And Sambora was hurt.

"[Bon Jovi] had the whole thing kinda planned out," Sambora says, "which basically was telling me, um, 'I can do it without you.'"

Building a band on rock anthems

Jon Bon Jovi with guitarist Phil X.

The docuseries shows how young New Jersey native John Bongiovi turned a job as a gofer at legendary recording studio The Power Station – owned by a cousin — into a recording of his first hit in the early 1980s, Runaway . His song eventually caught the ear of another little-known artist from New Jersey called Bruce Springsteen.

"The first demo I got of Jon's was a good song," says Springsteen, a longtime friend of Bon Jovi. "I mean, Jon's great talent is these big, powerful pop rock choruses that just demand to be sung by, you know, 20,000 people in an arena."

Thank You, Goodnight shows the band really took off by honing those rock anthems with songwriter Desmond Child, while simultaneously developing videos that showcased their status as a fun, rollicking live band. Hits like You Give Love a Bad Name, Livin' on a Prayer and Wanted: Dead or Alive made them MTV darlings and rock superstars.

Through it all, the singer and bandleader is shown as the group's visionary and spark plug, open about how strategically he pushed the band to write hit songs and positioned them for commercial success.

"It wasn't as though I woke up one morning and was the best singer in the school, or on the block, or in my house," he tells the camera, laughing. "I just had a desire and a work ethic that was always the driving force."

I saw that dynamic up close in the mid-1990s when I worked as a music critic in New Jersey, spending time with Jon Bon Jovi and the band. Back then, his mother ran the group's fan club and was always trying to convince the local rock critic to write about her superstar son – I was fascinated by how the band shrugged off criticisms of being uncool and survived changing musical trends, led by a frontman who worked hard to stay grounded.

Bon Jovi was always gracious and willing to talk; he even introduced me to then-New Jersey Gov. Christine Todd Whitman at one of his legendary Christmas charity concerts. (And in a crazy coincidence, the band's backup singer Everett Bradley is an old friend from college.)

I think the docuseries captures Bon Jovi's skill at leading the group through challenges musical and otherwise — from metal's slow fade off the pop charts to the rise of grunge rock — something the singer rarely gets credit for achieving.

Still, much of Thank You, Goodnight feels like an extended celebration of the band and its charismatic frontman, leavened by his earnest effort to regain control of his voice. If you're not a Bon Jovi fan, four episodes of this story may feel like a bit much (I'd recommend at least watching the first and last episodes.)

More than anything, the docuseries feels like an extended argument for something Bon Jovi has struggled to achieve, even amid million selling records and top-grossing concert tours – respect as a legendary rock band.

2024 NFL undrafted free agent tracker: Full team-by-team list of player signings following NFL Draft

The complete list of undrafted free agents signed.

nfl-logo.jpg

After three days and 257 picks, the 2024 NFL Draft has concluded. Even with the annual selection meeting officially over, plenty of teams will be in bidding wars with undrafted players to get them on their roster. Some players would rather be undrafted in order to get more guaranteed money or work out contracts on their terms.

The majority of undrafted free agents are just training camp bodies or roster fillers, but there are always a few on teams that end up making rosters and contributing for years to some. Some even end up as Pro Bowlers or make the Pro Football Hall of Fame .

These undrafted players are worth paying attention to this time of year, especially with rookie minicamps coming up over the next few weeks. Here are all the undrafted free agents signed by NFL teams, which will be updated as teams announce player signings.
