They also shared with me the rich history of the Vikings in Iceland, which has inspired me to carry on that legacy as a modern Icelandic Viking. 7 Days Self-drive | Golden Circle, South Coast, Snæfellsnes and Reykjavik
I loved this tour! Iceland’s beauty speaks for itself but as I labored over a group tour vs independent, a self-drive tour seemed more comfortable during a pandemic. I loved not having to plan the details of the car rental and all the different hotels! Even better, Marina was incredible with the most QUICK responses. In real time. We were able to add the blue lagoon within about 20 minutes or even less from my message inquiry. THAT KIND OF SERVICE IS EVERYTHING.
8 Days Self-drive | Around Iceland Ring Road Tour
The tour was a once in a lifetime experience. Iceland itself was amazingly epic. The convenience of having the accommodations, car rental, and daily itinerary provided was the biggest upside. Hotels were the downside, I’d say. As someone with some food allergies, breakfast left me with fruit as my sole option, and the beds were consistently uncomfortable. We ran into no issues with our bookings or anything. Smooth trip. Happy adventure.

Private Iceland Tour Reviews
We were so pleased with the itinerary for our 7 day self-drive tour. It allowed enough flexibility for us to detour at will and still visit key sites. The nightly accommodations were clean and comfortable (if you don't mind single beds) and breakfast was plentiful at each hotel (although the coffee should come with a warning - not so good at the hotels - except Fosshotel Baron in Reykjavik was pretty good by comparison). While weather interrupted one day's plan, our agent suggested alternatives and we were able to enjoy the day. It was an exceptional trip for a reasonable price. Of course, we have to go back because 7 days isn't enough to truly see Iceland. Will use TourRadar again!!!

You may have a few questions before you book your private guided tour, so we’ve collected the most commonly asked ones for your convenience. If you’d like more in-depth information, check out this helpful Iceland Travel Guide .
It’s also good to know that when you choose Nordic Visitor, you can Book With Confidence , safe in the knowledge that your payments are protected. To find out about our booking process, payments and more, please read our FAQs and booking terms .
1. IS ICELAND SAFE TO VISIT?
Iceland is among the safest countries in the world. It has a first-rate health system that is consistently rated higher than larger countries such as Australia, the USA, and the UK. You can find tips and advice about health and safety in Iceland before you travel.
2. WHAT IS A PRIVATE TOUR?
On a private tour, you and your chosen travel companions will be accompanied by an experienced local guide. They’ll be there throughout your trip sharing their insider knowledge of Iceland with you.
Your guide is chosen specially for you by your dedicated travel consultant, based on your travel needs. We work closely with all of our guides, and each is handpicked to ensure that you’ll have a fantastic trip.
Each day your driver guide will take you to must-see attractions and stunning locations. Along the way they’ll share their favourite hidden gems and passion for Iceland with you, transforming your journey into an insightful experience.
You can also personalise your escorted tour package by adding optional day trips to your itinerary. Plus, if you have something different in mind you can speak to a travel consultant about creating a custom Iceland package that’s specific to you.
If you would prefer to meet other like-minded travellers on your tour, then we recommend checking out these Iceland small group tours .
This involves discovering Iceland in a comfortable minibus driven by your guide. As part of a small group of up to 16 guests, you’ll get to enjoy one-to-one time with your guide.
3. WHY IS A LOCAL TOUR GUIDE SO IMPORTANT?
Having a local tour guide is important as they're able to add an extra layer of authenticity to your travel experience. Not only will your guide help you to see the country from an insider’s perspective, but they’ll also share their favourite spots with you.
So alongside visiting the top attractions, you’ll also uncover hidden gems that only a guide who lives and breathes Iceland would know about. You’ll also learn lots along the way as your guide imparts their knowledge of the country’s rich history, fascinating geology and more.
Plus, you can rest easy knowing that your licensed, expert guide has been selected by us, to meet our high service standards. You’re sure to have the trip of a lifetime.
4. WHAT ARE THE TOP THINGS TO DO ON A PRIVATE TOUR?
There are plenty of things to do on a private tour of Iceland. No matter which trip you choose, you’ll be treated to jaw-dropping views and thrilling activities.
That said, these are some of the things that we think you’ll love the most on a privately guided trip:
- • Discovering the history and folklore behind the waterfalls, geysers and scenery along the Golden Circle route
- • Luxuriating in the mineral-rich waters of the Blue Lagoon, the country’s most iconic geothermal pool
- • Marvelling at the natural splendour of the UNESCO-listed national parks: Þingvellir and Vatnajökull
- • Delving into the sparkling blue ice caves of Langjökull glacier with an expert by your side
- • Heading deep into the highland region of Landmannalaugar, a hiker’s paradise peppered with hot springs
- • Learning about the impressive geological forces that are constantly moulding Iceland’s landscapes
- • Photographing otherworldly volcanic scenery, like moss-blanketed lava fields and black sand beaches

5. WHEN IS THE BEST TIME OF YEAR TO VISIT ICELAND?
The best time of year to visit Iceland depends on where you would like to go and what activities you want to do.
Thanks to Iceland’s distinct seasons, it’s possible to have a different experience travelling in summer, compared to visiting in winter. Happily, this just means that there are more reasons for a return trip to Iceland!
Visit Iceland in summer , from May to September, and you’re more likely to experience better weather and mild temperatures. This makes the summer months ideal for sightseeing in Iceland’s more remote regions. Plus, if you have a private guide, Iceland’s vast highlands are suddenly much more accessible.
The long daylight hours in summer also mean that you can fit more into each day. That said, you’ll set the pace on your tour, so not every day has to be action-packed. For example, you’ll enjoy the midnight sun whether you’re out on a hiking trail or relaxing in a hot spring.
Meanwhile, winter in Iceland offers a different set of experiences. Contrast exploring late into the evening under the midnight sun, with dark winter nights spent chasing incredible displays of the northern lights.
While seeing the aurora isn’t guaranteed, having a local guide with you will increase your chances. You’ll benefit from their in-depth knowledge of the best times and places to see the northern lights in Iceland .
Although winter does bring some additional challenges, such as colder weather, we think the rewards are worth it. Plus, you can relax knowing you’ll have an expert by your side the entire way.
What are some of the best things to do in Iceland in winter ? Think horse riding through the snow, exploring ice caves and soaking up the festive atmosphere around Christmas and New Year.
You’ll find additional information about the seasonal changes to the weather and daylight hours in these guides:
- • Iceland's climate and weather conditions
- • Iceland's time and daylight hours
6. HOW MUCH TIME DO YOU NEED TO VISIT ICELAND?
You can enjoy an introduction to this astonishingly varied country with as few as 4 or 5 days in Iceland . That said, for a more immersive experience, it’s best to stay for 1 week to 10 days .
Plus, the longer you stay, the more bewitched you’ll become by Iceland’s vast icecaps, breathtaking national parks and geological wonders.
At Nordic Visitor we know that your pace of travel also matters. For instance, while packing a lot into every day can be tempting, you don’t want to feel rushed.
That's why these vacation packages have been tested by our local travel experts. They’ve made sure that our itineraries strike the right balance to give you a fulfilling visit every time.
Check out our offering of expert-curated private tours in Iceland to find the perfect trip for you. That said, don’t hesitate to get in touch if you can’t find exactly what you’re looking for. Whether you’d like to create a bespoke itinerary or extend your stay in Iceland, our local travel experts are there to help.
To find out more, you can read this blog on how many days you need in Iceland .
7. WHEN WILL I MEET MY GUIDE?
When you first arrive in Iceland, a private transfer will be waiting to take you to your hotel in comfort and style. You’ll then meet your guide on the second day of your trip, once you’re rested and refreshed after travelling.
This also gives you a full day in Reykjavík to relax and enjoy taking in the city on your own at the start of your adventure.
8. DO YOU TIP TOUR GUIDES IN ICELAND?
Tipping is generally not expected in Iceland, so providing a gratuity is entirely up to you. Of course, if you’d like to show your gratitude with a tip, we’re sure your guide will appreciate it.
9. CAN I CHOOSE THE ARRIVAL DATE?
Yes, you can choose the arrival date that suits you best, based on the trip and time of year. Each tour has an online availability calendar, so once you’ve decided on the right trip for you, simply select your preferred start date.
Escorted summer tours are possible from May to October. Please note, trips that venture to remote regions, including the Icelandic highlands, have a shorter season, from July to September.
Meanwhile, you can begin a winter package anytime you like between October to April. Although, it’s worth bearing in mind that we don’t offer guided tour packages over Christmas and New Year.
For up-to-date availability, please check the online calendar for the tour you are interested in.
10. CAN I CUSTOMISE MY TOUR?
Yes, of course! A privately guided tour is the ideal choice if you’re looking for a special travel experience that can be tailored to suit your needs.
Simply get in touch with us, and a Reykjavík-based travel expert will work with you to craft your ultimate bespoke Iceland itinerary .
This is also the time to let us know if there are any specific interests that you’d like to explore on your trip. For example, are you a foodie, a history-buff, or an aspiring photographer? If so, we’ll do our best to match you up with a guide who has expertise in this area.
While our travel consultants will happily help you to customise your tour, it’s also possible to tailor your trip when booking online. You can opt to extend your stay with extra nights in Reykjavík, giving you more time to appreciate the city’s vibrant cultural scene.
If you decide to book your tour online, you can also add a variety of group and private day tours to your itinerary. If you’re not sure what excursions are right for you, or want to know more, you can speak to our travel experts.
While each tour package is different, all of these optional activities have been handpicked to complement your private trip itinerary. For instance, you could take a super jeep into the highlands, kayak on a glacier lagoon, or soar over volcanoes on a helicopter ride.
For more information, or if you have something specific in mind, don’t hesitate to get in touch with us to ask about tailor-made Iceland tours.
11. WHEN SHOULD I ORGANISE MY FLIGHTS?
We advise checking flights for availability, but holding off on purchasing them until after your tour package is booked. Once your trip is confirmed by email, you can go ahead and finalise your flights.
Please get in touch with us if you have missed out on flights and we’ll do our best to accommodate a change of dates.
12. WHAT SHOULD I PACK FOR MY PRIVATE TOUR?
Iceland is renowned for having changeable weather, so you’ll want to make sure that you’re prepared, come rain or shine.
Warm layers, along with a waterproof jacket and trousers, are essential year-round items in Iceland. Having these to hand while you’re out and about means that even if the sun isn’t shining you won’t miss out.
As part of your escorted trip you’ll visit some of the country’s most beautiful natural attractions. Most of the time, a short walk accompanied by your guide, will be the best way to appreciate your stunning surroundings. So we recommend bringing sturdy walking boots or shoes with a good grip for hiking.
During winter, October to April, you’ll need to wrap up warm with extra layers as temperatures can drop below freezing. Meanwhile the summer months, from May to September, bring milder weather. This means that you’ll want to pack sunscreen and some lighter layers.
If you’ll be heading to the renowned Blue Lagoon, or any other geothermal pools, make sure to remember swimwear and sandals. Plus, if you plan to visit any lesser-known hot springs it’s also worthwhile throwing in a quick-drying travel towel.
Below you’ll find a basic packing list that will serve you well from the south coast of Iceland to the country’s northern reaches. Find out more about what to bring with you according to the season in our Iceland packing guide .
- Walking boots or shoes with good grip
- Waterproof jacket and trousers
- Insulated jacket
- Woollen or fleece jumpers
- Thermal base layers
- Warm hat, scarf and gloves
- Warm hiking socks
- Quick-drying travel towel

World Class planning and execution. Absolutely amazing service in a wonderful country.
February 14, 2024
Deluxe Iceland is 1st class, and they made this the most perfect vacation ever. Every detail was attended to. From the minute the arrangements we made with Anna, who worked to make sure we hit every spot to the driving with Unnar, we made sure everything executed flawlessly. I would give them 10 stars if the system allowed. We have traveled the world but never had a better trip than this one. We will definitely be back! I recommend anyone to book with this world-class... Unexpectedly had a solo trip to Iceland (my daughter got sick and couldn't go) and Deluxe Iceland made my trip absolutely amazing. Unnar was an amazing guide, he went above and beyond to make sure my trip was nothing short of spectacular. I didn't have to worry about a thing, they took care of everything and customized my trip perfectly. I'm going back in Oct with my daughter, and I can't wait to see what they plan for us. Iceland Adventure
Deluxe Iceland took the guess work out of planning an adventurous vacation for my family with 3 children, aged 11, 11, 9. They carefully crafted an itinerary that was exciting, educational and took into consideration that we were traveling with children. The hotel suites were phenomenal with friendly staff that were willing to answer questions and make every accommodation to our requests. The activities, which included ATVs, waterfalls, snowmobiling, geothermal spa, farm visits, lava center, park hikes, geysirs, etc. were carefully mapped out to maximize our 6 day trip. Deluxe Iceland staff were available in the days leading up to our arrival and promptly answered any/all questions while we were in Iceland. I would highly recommend using them to plan your... Icelandic Dream Vacation
November 24, 2023
Our family of three just returned after an amazing 4 day trip to Iceland. The trip was wildly successful - despite an impending volcanic eruption and hurricane-force winds - due to the incredible staff at Deluxe Iceland (Arney with planning and Unnar as our driver/guide). The team at Deluxe Iceland was able to preemptively identify potential issues due to weather and adapt our itinerary accordingly - something we could never manage on our own without that same level of knowledge. We also avoided large tourist groups and were able to optimize sightseeing according to weather - ultimately seeing and learning so much more than we could have accomplished on our own. We highly recommend planning your Icelandic vacation with Deluxe... Read more

REVIEWS FROM HAPPY CUSTOMERS
Best Private Guide Service: We searched the Internet and sent out several requests for private guide services. Bragi responded almost immediately and that set the tone for our excellent tour of South Iceland. Jon Thorisson was our guide and we had a great time. He accommodated all of our needs and requests. After a day in Reykjavik on our own, Jon picked us up from our hotel and transferred us to the Reykjavik airport where we took a smaller plane to Hofn to start out grand adventure.
He hired a nice four wheel drive vehicle and off we went to areas where we saw few, if any people. We saw some amazing sights, including the largest herd of reindeer Jon has ever seen. We climbed up areas in our 4WD until the snow blocked the road. We hiked and stopped to refill our water bottles with fresh spring water from streams. We saw and walked among glaciers and empty glacier beds (that had been washed away by the last volcano eruption). We hiked the glacier and sat in an ice cave.
I can’t begin to write down all that Jon showed us and told us. From the visit to a grocery store, the picnics near the cliffs where puffins fly to eating dried fish with lots of butter. We had meals of reindeer carpaccio, smoked puffin and Minsk whale. We stayed at an amazing country inn, Hotel Ranga, who will wake you up at night to see the Northern Lights (which we didn’t get to see).
Jon took care of our every need. We didn’t have to worry about paying for anything. We payed only at the end. He was personable and friendly and felt as if he were our friend at the end of our four days with him.
We are already planning our next trip back!
My husband and I, and another couple, spent 8 days in Iceland with Jon as our tour guide. He was a very safe driver, and made us feel comfortable and well taken-care of. We recommend him without reservation!
I would have no hesitation in recommending Jon and BR Tours. We felt well advised, well looked after and experienced some amazing and unique sights.
We were a group of 6 people traveling and we stumbled upon Jon during a quest to book a private tour. He was punctual, accommodating, knowledgeable and overall a fun person to hang out with during the time we were there. I highly recommend hiring him.
Best Tour Company in Iceland. We spent two days with Jon as part of a group from a cruise ship. I communicated with him via email to set up two tours to different parts of Iceland. Jon was always very prompt in returning emails, answering questions, being flexible in arranging a tour as we asked and being accomodating with time and price. He is so knowledgeable about Iceland and it was very easy to spend two days with him (12 hours the first day and 8 hours the next).
The first day we did the „Golden Circle“ tour and we then went to the South Shore. This was a long day but we saw more in one day than most people would see in three days of doing cruise ship tours. We had a comfortable mini bus that held 16 people and there were 12 of us.
The second day we went to the Reykjanes Peninsula, Blue Lagoon (visit – no swimming) and back into town for shopping. This day there were 11 of us in the mini bus. Jon took people who did not want to shop back to the ship and then came back at a later time to pick the rest of us up in town and took us back to the ship.
Both days, the price of the tour was very reasonable and we saw so much more than on a typical crusie ship tour. We did not have the same people touring with us both day yet all of the people in both groups felt that the tours were well worth the price and they loved the outstanding customer service that Jon provided. We were able to pay at the end of the tour each day with cash or a credit card.
We have organized other tours in other countries and working with Jon and BR Tours was one of the best experiences we have ever had with arranging a tour. Email Jon at BR Tours and let him know what you are thinking about for a tour and he will let you know what is possible, make suggestions and do everything he can to make your time in Iceland an experience you won’t forget. His personality and customer service is far above an excellent rating!!
Absolutely outstanding 2 day tour with Jon and company doing the Golden Circle, Blue Lagoon, geothermal plant, horse farm, plus. From my initial contact for booking to our goodbyes at the port at the end of two days, this was a most pleasant experience. I highly recommend BR Tours to anyone wanting to do an Iceland excursion. https://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g189970-d2219744-r191592608-BR_Tours_Private_Tours-Reykjavik_Capital_Region.html#
BR Tours is a grand and dynamic agency. Our 8 days in Iceland was wonderful. Filled with both a specific plan designed for us because Jon spent time understanding who we are and flexible enough because sometimes we didn’t find out what else we could do until Jon lead us to his discoveries.
I have no end of superlatives to describe my experience with BR Tours. Without question, I would and have recommended the services of BR Tours.
I highly recommend taking this tour if you are not renting a car or if you want to avoid the bus. Jon was very helpful and catered to all of our requests and made it an unforgettable tour.
All in all we fully recommend using BR Tours to organise your sightseeing as well as Light chasing when in Iceland.
Apart from being very knowledgeable about the finer details on the attractions such as the best times and best locations, Jon was also very willing to accommodate to our requests. He was also honest and had integrity, he was genuinely interested in giving us the best experience in Iceland.
My friends and I (total of 5) had a great tour around Iceland with Jon in March for around 5-6 days!

Private 12-Hour Jokulsarlon Lagoon Tour with Diamond Beach & Skaftafell from Reykjavik
Description
Embark on this 12-hour private tour to the Vatnajokull National Park, centered around the world-famous Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon. Travelers keen on exploring the icy wilderness of Iceland with the convenience of a private guide will love the itinerary of this experience.
Your adventure in Iceland begins with a convenient morning pick-up from your hotel in Reykjavik. A spacious minibus accommodating up to eight people will be your tour vehicle for the next 11 to 12 hours.
With the guidance of a knowledgeable local guide, you'll embark on a day of exploration, learning, and discovery in one of Iceland's most breathtaking regions. The guide will enrich your experience with exciting trivia, local stories, and folklore about the attractions on the itinerary.
Unlike crowded bus tours, this private tour provides a more personalized and immersive experience. With the flexibility to explore at your own pace and linger at each stop, you'll have the opportunity to fully immerse in the beauty of Iceland's landscapes and landmarks.
Your itinerary continues with a scenic drive along the South Coast of Iceland, one of the most popular regions in the country. The South Coast boasts panoramic views of rugged coastlines, volcanic landscapes, waterfalls, and towering glaciers.
Upon arrival at the Vatnajokull National Park, home to the largest ice cap in Europe, your first stop is at the Skaftafell Nature Reserve.
Here, you'll embark on a 1.5-hour hiking tour to discover the breathtaking beauty of the nature reserve. Your main destination in the area is the majestic Svartifoss waterfall, renowned for its basalt column formations and picturesque surroundings.
The highlight of your tour comes next, which is a visit to the Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon. Jokulsarlon ranks among Iceland's most famous natural attractions because of its unique features.
Jokulsarlon is known for its thousands of floating icebergs against mighty glaciers. Seeing these ice chunks of different sizes and colors up close is one of the most exciting activities you can do in the land of fire and ice.
No trip to Jokulsarlon is complete without a visit to Diamond Beach, where glittering ice pieces from the glacier lagoon wash ashore. The ice contrasting against the black sand beach makes the perfect subject for landscape and portrait photography.
Besides the thrilling attractions, your itinerary includes a delicious lunch at a local restaurant featuring Icelandic and international cuisine. The food is already included in the tour price.
After a day of exploration, the guide will drive you back to Reykjavik and drop the group off at your accommodation.
Don't miss this chance to experience the wonders of the Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon and Diamond Beach on a private tour tailored to your preferences. Check availability now by choosing a date.

Planning a Trip to Iceland
6 minute read
By Adina Lazar
29 April 2024
Known as the Land of Fire and Ice, Iceland is famed for its dramatic volcanic landscapes, striking black sand beaches, and impressive glaciers. For such a small country, you'll have an incredible amount to see and do, plus a ton to organize when planning a trip.
With that in mind, we’ve made a list of the most important things to consider to help you start planning a trip to Iceland.
- Kick off your Iceland adventure with these vacation packages .
1. Decide how long to stay
The length of your trip is a key detail to decide first. How long you’ll spend in Iceland depends on how much time you can spare and what your travel goals are.
Shorter trips
Generally speaking, the longer the trip, the more you’ll be able to see. But if you only have a few days, it’s entirely possible to take in plenty of stunning landscapes and one-of-a-kind experiences.
For trips shorter than 4 days, the best option is to stay in Reykjavík . Using the capital as your home base will give you the chance to take day tours to famous nearby sights.
For example, you could travel the popular Golden Circle route. You'll see the Gullfoss waterfall , Geysir geothermal area , and Þingvellir National Park – 3 of Iceland’s top attractions – in just one day.
As well as traveling around Reykjavík, you shouldn’t skip exploring Iceland’s buzzing capital city. With exciting culture, restaurants, and nightlife, you’ll have plenty of fun things to see and do.
Walk through colorful neighborhoods with street art displays, eat at trendy food halls , and immerse yourself in cultural attractions like the Harpa Concert Hall .
You can also climb to the top of Hallgrímskirkja, Reykjavík's iconic church, where you’ll be treated to panoramic views of the city.
- For more inspiration, check out these multi-day tours from Reykjavík .

Longer trips
Got a week or longer? Venture out and explore even more of the country.
Head to the south coast to marvel at Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon , one of the region’s most popular destinations. If you’re up for it, take a boat tour to see the floating icebergs up close. On your way to the lagoon, you can stop at Seljalandsfoss waterfall , where you’ll get the chance to walk behind the thundering waters.
And don’t forget about Reynisfjara black sand beach near the charming village of Vík . It’s a great spot to take in the view and admire the dramatic cliffs and basalt sea stacks rising from the ocean.
- Go on a tour of South Iceland to see these wonders and a whole lot m ore.
- Related: Best things to see & do on Iceland’s south coast .
If whale watching is on your bucket list, travel north and you’ll find the coastal town of Húsavík , Iceland’s whale-watching capital.
While you’re here, don’t miss a visit to Akureyri , the unofficial capital of North Iceland . It’s an unmatched spot to sample local food, drink Icelandic craft beer, and try adrenaline-packed activities like snowmobiling.
Along the way you can stop and marvel at Goðafoss waterfall , known as the ‘Waterfall of the Gods’. Or explore Lake Mývatn , a volcanic lake surrounded by stunning natural landscapes such as geothermal areas, pseudo-craters, and lava formations.
But if you want to see it all and then some, following the Ring Road route is just the option. This road is Iceland's main highway that encircles the entire island. It’s roughly 1,332 km (828 mi) long and offers you the opportunity to explore some of Iceland's most spectacular landscapes, major towns, and natural wonders.
We recommend taking at least a week to fully complete this epic journey and soak up all the main sights.

2. Choose when to visit
With so many cool things to experience, there’s no bad time to visit Iceland. But maybe you’ll find that visiting in a particular season works best for you.
Visiting Iceland in summer
In summer, you’ll discover the phenomenon known as the midnight sun . This happens when the sun doesn't fully set, giving you long hours of daylight. It provides plenty of time for exploration and outdoor activities, even late into the evening.
You’ll be treated to lush landscapes, warmer weather, and access to the highlands – a region inaccessible in winter due to snow and ice. Plus, summer is festival season, with various cultural events, concerts, and outdoor celebrations happening across the country.
But this season is also the most popular time to visit. To make the most of your trip, we recommend planning ahead and booking everything in advance. This even includes making reservations at top restaurants in Reykjavík .
- Enjoy longer days to explore the island on an Iceland summer vacation .

Visiting Iceland in winter
Winter is the time to witness a truly spectacular display of the Northern Lights , thanks to the long nights and dark skies.
You could also be treated to magical winter scenery with snow-covered mountains, frozen waterfalls, and icy landscapes. Relaxing in Iceland's hot springs and geothermal pools with these backdrops is especially beautiful during the winter months. Plus, it may not be as cold as you think, with average temperatures hovering around -2°C (28°F).
But keep in mind that winter has shorter days, so you’ll need to plan carefully to make the most of each day. And to be prepared for the chillier conditions, you’ll definitely need to pack layers!
Winter weather can also be unpredictable with storms, strong winds, and snowfall, so flexibility is key during this season.
- Plan a trip to Iceland with these winter vacation packages .

Visiting Iceland in spring or fall
Spring and fall are the shoulder seasons in Iceland. During these periods, there are usually fewer visitors around, so you’ll have more of the attractions to yourself. Plus, the weather is generally milder.
If you visit Iceland in spring , you’ll get longer daylight hours than in winter, meaning more time for sightseeing. And with longer nights in October and November , late fall is one of the best times to see the Northern Lights in Iceland .
Both seasons are also prime times for wildlife viewing, with the chance to spot whales, Arctic foxes, and reindeer. But they can bring a mix of sun, rain showers, and occasional storms. Packing smart with wind and waterproof clothing will help keep you dry and comfortable.

3. Prepare your sightseeing bucket list
When you start planning your Iceland trip, you’ll find there are so many things to see and do! Interested in marveling at top attractions like the Golden Circle? Looking to get off the beaten path and explore the remote Westfjords ?
Make yourself a list and plan your Iceland itinerary in advance. For some attractions, such as the Blue Lagoon or Sky Lagoon , it’s best to book ahead. Spots can fill up fast, especially in summer.
We also suggest having a few backup plans in case the weather takes a turn. For example, Reykjavík’s museums , shops, and cozy cafés can be nice options to save for a rainy (or snowstorm-y) day.
- See 3 of Iceland’s most famous natural gems on a Golden Circle tour .

While you’re planning, don’t forget to consider your budget. Iceland has a reputation for being an expensive place to visit. Check out this helpful budgeting guide to get an idea of how much you can expect to spend when you travel in Iceland, and some easy ways to save.
4. Make a packing list
What you pack depends on the time of year that you’re visiting and the type of activities you have planned. However, as a general rule, it’s a good idea to have these 5 things at the top of your packing list:
- Waterproof jacket and pants
- Thermal layers
- Sturdy, comfortable hiking shoes
- Hat, scarf and gloves (in winter)
Of course in summer you can swap those cold winter accessories for a cap, SPF and sunglasses. But don’t forget to keep an eye on the weather forecast. It can help you make any last-minute changes before you zip up your suitcase and head to the airport.
- Get more tips on what to pack for winter in Iceland with this packing guide .
5. Pick your travel style
Now that you know how to plan a trip to Iceland, it’s time to choose how you want to get around the island. The main question is, to drive or not to drive?
If you like having the freedom to explore the Land of Fire and Ice at your own pace and stop off wherever you like, a self-drive tour is for you.
Prefer to have someone else drive? Check out these guided group tours where you can travel around the country with like-minded travelers. Or, if you’re after a more intimate discovery of what Iceland has to offer, try a private guided tour .
With both options you’ll be led by a local guide with expert knowledge of the country.
Or maybe you want to base yourself in Reykjavík or Akureyri. In that case, multi-day bus tours let you stay in Iceland's main hubs and explore nearby attractions on day trips. You’ll be able to customize your tour by adding extra activities to pack even more into your vacation.
Still not sure what travel style suits you? Find answers to all your questions about how to get around Iceland in this detailed guide.
