Looking to buy a rod/reel case for travel. Orvis safe passage or Fishpond Dakota. Any help would be appreciated. Dean Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

If you search the forums there have been many threads about carry-on travel cases, including those two brands. I use a homemade tube case made out of 4" ABS plumbing pipe, with a velcro'ed on Cabela's shoulder strap. Cheap, holds four 4-piece rods, waterproof, bombproof (if a bit heavy), travelled with it internationally, fits into an overhead bin, never had an issue. Cover it with stickers from your fly fishing travels to look less threatening. I carry my reels, leader, tippet, and a few other small essentials in my carry-on bag. Scott

I also have the large Safe Passage case. Great when I’m taking a lot of gear. When I’m taking less gear I take my Simms older double rod and reel case, the long version that will take 4 piece rods up to 10 feet. I’ve found that I can carry two rods with reels and another 2 rods (carefully inserted obviously) up to 9 foot, without reels.

Like others above, I have the Orvis. Looked at the Fishpond too before buying, but prefer the interior design of the Orvis--being able to pack the rods inside the smaller top section allows more flexibility for reels, fly boxes, etc. Opted against the Simms Bounty Hunter because it exceeds carry-on dimensions. I know a couple of people who have one and have carried it on without issue, but I always feared being forced to check it. Not just having to pay a checked bag fee, but also the risk of damage or loss. One trip the airline misrouted my checked bag with my boots and waders, but at least I had my rods, reels, etc. Anyway, a vote for the Orvis.

For the money, I have an LL Bean Maine guide travel case made of waxed cotton. It holds 3 separate rods in their tubes. The case I have is for 4 pc rods. It will handle 9 ‘ 4 pc rods fine. The case itself is not hard fut flexible. It has 2 extra pockets for additional gear if needed. It looks rugged and classic at the same time. The rob tubes are held in by special elastic loops in the case so they do not shift. The case costs $89 which is a bargain. They have a longer case for 2 pc rods. Note, I have not tried to board a plane with this case. It is 33 inches long.

IMO, it’s mostly personal preference. My Fishpond has been all over the Caribbean and to the Pacific islands a couple times as well as many parts of the U.S. Still holding up fine. And I am fond of the styling.

k_e_v

Dean, I can’t compare the two but I have used the Orvis Safe Passage extensively and it has held up well to international travel , been welcomed as a carry on and holds all I need safely and securely. I use the smaller one as my travel case and the larger one now stays home as storage and keeps everything right where I can find it? Best of luck in your travels Kev

Thanks, I appreciate the feedback. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I have an older Fishpond case much like that LLBean case a few posts back in that it holds three tubes, as opposed to rods wihtout their tubes. Designed for 3 tubes, it will actually accomodate 4, plus it has some outside pockets for 4 to 6 reels depending upon their size. Main point is to think whether you want the tubes in there; i do, but apparently others dont because most cases i see these days seem to be intended to hold rods in bags without tubes. And this case seems to be airline friendly; in fact i mainly bought it so i can carry some rods and reels together while travelling by plane

I have the Fishpond. I looked at the Orvis. What I liked better about the Fishpond Dakota, the rod tubes fit in as well and it seems to have lots of room for reels, sunglasses, fly boxes, leaders, tools, etc.

Orvis Outfitter Team Member: Reed Teuscher

orvis travel rod case

Welcome to our new series in which we profile members of the Orvis Outfitter Team, the customer-service folks who answer all your tackle and fishing questions via e-mail ([email protected]), telephone (800-548-9548), and live chat on our website. Spread out around the country, these experts have the experience and knowledge to help Orvis customers make the right choices and become better anglers. First up is Reed Teuscher, of Hailey, Idaho.

1. When did you start fly fishing?

I first had a fly rod in my hand as a 7- or 8-year-old, and went almost exclusively with fly as a teenager. Growing up in the foothills of the Cascade Range in western Oregon, I was able to fish as often as I wanted within minutes of my childhood home.

2. What’s your favorite water?

There are so many places that have special meaning to me, it is hard to choose just one. The Kanektok and Kenai rivers in Alaska. The Owyhee and Deschutes in Oregon. The Green in Utah. Mexico’s Sea of Cortez. And while it is a shadow of what it once was, the North Umpqua River in Oregon will always be hallowed ground to me for the steelhead and people that have left their mark there.

orvis travel rod case

3. What’s your favorite species to chase with a fly rod and why?

I have run the gamut of favorite fish, as that happens when you have fished your whole life. I once lived to chase steelhead with Spey rods, but am now a trout junkie again. At this stage in my fishing career, tarpon are my favorite saltwater fish for their size and tenacity. For freshwater, I love browns and rainbows in all shapes and sizes, wherever they live from the Rockies to the Pacific.

4. What’s your most memorable fly-fishing moment?

Having worked in the fly-fishing industry for almost 25 years, I have worked most jobs available in this community. My most memorable moment was guiding a woman in remote Alaska who did not want to be there. She came with her husband and adult son and did not know how remote and primitive the camp was. I had her their last day in camp while her two guys fished together.  She was a single with another gentleman who was there by himself. She made it known that she would go out on the boat ride but had no intention of fishing.  That did not sit well with me. If she was in the pristine, beautiful location with salmon fresh from the ocean, I was not going to let her sit in the boat and stew. With kid gloves and gentle prodding, I got her casting a Spey rod. She landed chum and smaller Chinook salmon and got to be a part of her boatmate landing a 50-pound Chinook after a 45-minute fight.  The excitement was infectious, and she realized fly fishing may be for her after all.  By the end of her day, I had her connected with women’s group in Pennsylvania that would reach out to her when she got home. Turning her frown upside down and starting a fire in her for a sport I am deeply passionate about will always be at the top of favorite fishing memories.

5. What’s your most forgettable fly-fishing moment?

When I was a steelhead snob, I thought the sun rose and set on steelhead, and my attitude reflected that. Steelhead are incredible fish but not the end-all like I thought at that time. Thank goodness, we hopefully get wiser as we get older. All fish are incredible, regardless of size or location.

6. What do you love most about fly fishing?

I love the connections and friendships I have made because of fly fishing. I would not know my best friends or have met the many amazing people I have if it were not for a shared love of fly fishing.

7. What’s your favorite piece of Orvis gear and why?

My favorite piece is our Orvis Carry-It-All . Every angler should own this regardless of how much gear they own.  I own two: one set-up with my saltwater gear and the other set-up with gear for my local fisheries. The large size carries my rods from 2-weight up to 7-weight, my 11-foot Euro rod, and my 11-foot trout-spey rods in their rod socks. I also have my reels in the case, along with spare flies in fly boxes, a first aid kit, spare leaders and tippets, and spare sunglasses and Buffs. I know I can grab my CIA and be ready for anything.

When I travel, I load the case with rods, reels, a change or two of clothes, a fleece or light rain jacket, a book, charging cables, earbuds, spare sunglasses, and any meds I need. I do not check this but rather carry it on the plane with me, which most airlines allow. When I am going on a fishing trip, I want my gear to arrive with me. I don’t care if the airline loses my luggage (I can wash and wear the same clothes for several days or buy new ones), but I do care if my fishing gear does not show up. The CIA ensures I have the gear I need regardless of the outing.

8. What’s your go-to fly when nothing else is working?

Anything purple! Purple Haze, Purple Chubbie, Purple Soft Hackle. We don’t know why purple works, but we do not argue with success.

9. What was your favorite fly-fishing trip?

My favorite trip is one I can take with those most dear to me. Spending time with my family and friends on a river, lake, or ocean making memories that will last a lifetime are most precious to me.

10.   How has working as a member of the Orvis Outfitter team affected your own angling?

I always strive to fish and associate with anglers better than me. The Outfitter team is loaded with folks with a wealth of knowledge on locations around the world and knowledge on techniques and concepts that I am not an expert at.  Our teams’ conversations about various fisheries and how to approach certain situations have expanded my knowledge considerably.

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)

<< Previous page

Pages:  379-406

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.

Keywords: Tuva, Early Iron Age, early Scythian period, Aldy-Bel culture, barrow, burial in the coffin, mummy, full genome sequencing, aDNA

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

orvis travel rod case

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

orvis travel rod case

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

orvis travel rod case

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

orvis travel rod case

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

orvis travel rod case

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

orvis travel rod case

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

orvis travel rod case

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
