Chris Horner joins NBC's Tour de France broadcast team

'I have to be good, and I have to enjoy it' 2013 Vuelta winner tells Cyclingnews

Chris Horner will move from the bicycle seat to the broadcaster's chair this July for the Tour de France , joining the on-air team for the American NBC Sports television network during the French Grand Tour.

"I'm going back to the Tour," a typically upbeat Horner told Cyclingnews Friday evening from his home in Bend, Oregon, where he had just completed a 144km ride earlier in the day.

Horner will be part of NBC Sports' daily 'traveling studio' for the three-week race, providing analysis and interviews before and after each stage. Paul Burmeister will return to host the studio segments, with retired US pro Christian Vande Velde also reprising his analyst role, according to an announcement published on the NBC Sports website . Vande Velde and Horner will also be called upon to add to the the play-by-play coverage from Bob Roll, who will move from the studio to call the action with Phil Liggett after Liggett's longtime broadcast partner Paul Sherwen died in December .

Horner said he will fly to Europe on July 2 to start preparing for the three-week race that starts July 6 in Brussels, Belgium.

"They have some new material that they want us to learn for the show, so we’ll go over and learn a little bit of that, practice on it, and then we’ll shoot from the hip," he said. "They throw you in the deep water, the deep end of the pool, and hopefully it all works out well."

Horner got an introduction to race commentary this year with NBC Sports at the Ardennes Classics Flèche Wallonne and Liège-Bastogne-Liège. He said he sat in and watched Vande Velde for Flèche and then picked up the live microphone for Liège with the understanding that it would also serve as an on-the-job tryout for this year's Tour de France.

He got the call-up not long after that and has been waiting for NBC Sports to make the official announcement. He'll soon find out if providing expert analysis and concise opinions for daily broadcasts over three weeks will turn into a new avenue where he can excel in cycling.

"I’m really good at chatting and talking about bike racing," he said. "But for TV you have to cut it a little bit shorter, you have to be to the point, you have to be real clear and crisp, and so that’s the part I don’t have experience with. We’ll see if I can do it and if I’m good at it, and, of course, will I enjoy it? All those factors go in. You gotta be good at it, and then I have to enjoy it too.

"With anything, when you haven’t done it before, you don’t know exactly what you’re doing," Horner admitted. "I have an idea of what it is because I’ve been a pro bike racer and been around bike racing my whole life, but no one knows exactly what it is until you’ve sat in that chair."

Unlike the one-day races Horner worked for NBC earlier in the season, he'll have three weeks in July to learn the ropes of his new role as journalist and just where he fits into the media food chain at the world's biggest race.

"They asked me, ‘Would you be good at talking to all the directors and all that stuff?’ I said, ‘Well I think when I have the NBC badge on they’ll actually take the call, so I probably will be. You can’t go bigger than NBC, right?'" Horner told Cyclingnews . "But even when I said that, I don’t really know that it’s true. I assume that when you call and they know you’re NBC that they pick up the phone, but maybe they don’t."

'Regardless of what I do in life, I'm still riding the bike'

Horner, 47, raced professionally for more than two decades and competed in the Tour de France seven times, most recently in 2014 with Lampre-Merida. He won the Vuelta in 2013 at the age of 41, but his team kept him out of the Spanish Grand Tour the following year when his cortisol levels dropped below the threshold considered healthy.

A 2012 Olympian, Horner earned his best-ever Tour de France result with RadioShack in 2010, when he finished ninth overall. He raced his last Grand Tour at the 2014 Tour de France, but Horner competed on the UCI Continental level in 2015 and 2016 with Airgas-Safeway and Lupus Racing, respectively. He returned briefly last year with Team Illuminate, competing in the USPro championships in Knoxville, Tennessee, as well as the Sibiu Cycling Tour in Romania.

Earlier this month, Horner competed in the Cascade Cycling Classic in Bend, finishing 17th overall in a race won by 'veteran' US rider Travis McCabe (Floyd's Pro Cycling), currently 17 years Horner's junior.

"I rode my bike 90 miles today," Horner told Cyclingnews  Friday evening. "I don’t get paid to ride my bike and I’m out there doing 90 miles – like a crazy lunatic. But I love it. I really do. I always have. The fact that people paid me to do it just made it that much more fun.

"Regardless of what I do in life, I’m still riding the bike, I’m still watching bike races on TV, and when [NBC Sports producer] David Michaels called and said, ‘Hey, are you interested in doing the Tour?’ I was like, ‘Absolutely.’

"They’d asked me six or eight years ago, and I said no because I was still bike racing. Doing TV commentary for bike races was maybe the number-two best job, but the number-one best job I was already doing, so it didn’t make much sense. Now I just don’t have those legs, unfortunately.

"I told David, I said, ‘I’m going to be watching the Tour at home for six hours a day, or I could be at the Tour de France watching it and telling stories. So, yeah, I’d love to go with him and go do it. It’s a win-win."

The Tour de France begins Saturday, July 6, in Brussels and concludes Sunday, July 28, on the Champs-Elysees in Paris.

Tour de France 2023: How to watch, schedule, odds and storylines you need to know

Tour de France 2023: How to watch, schedule, odds and storylines you need to know

The Tour de France returns Saturday for its 110th edition, this time beginning in Spain’s Basque Country, and will end on Sunday, July 23, in Paris. As always, the race — which recently got the “Drive to Survive”-style docuseries treatment on Netflix — will feature 21 stages. There will be eight flat stages, four hilly stages, eight mountain stages with four summit finishes, just one individual time trial (down from the usual two) and two rest days.

Here’s what you need to know to follow along:

How to watch the 2023 Tour de France

Peacock, NBC and USA Network will carry the Tour in the United States (NBC Sports and the Tour recently announced a six-year extension of their exclusive U.S. rights agreement, which now runs through 2029).

Peacock will stream every stage live and have daily pre-race shows. The streamer will also have stage replays, recaps, highlights, rider interviews and more, NBC Sports said.

Phil Liggett, a.k.a. “the voice of cycling,” will be on the call for his 51st tour, joined by analyst Bob Roll. Steve Porino and former professional cyclist Christian Vande Velde will also be reporting from on site, with the latter giving real-time updates while traveling the course on a motorcycle.

For the first time, NBC Sports’ broadcasts will feature clips from team radio, like communication between team directors and riders.

FloSports will stream the event in Canada.

How long is the Tour de France route?

This year’s route runs about 3,406 kilometers (about 2,116 miles). Stage 2, the longest single stage, is 209 km (about 130 miles).

The 22.4-km (about 14-mile) time trial will be held in the Alps in Stage 16.

How much money is on the line?

A total of €2.3 million (about $2.5 million) will be given out to the teams and riders, including €500,000 (about $546,000) to the winner of the overall individual classification.

How many riders are on the Tour?

Each of the 22 teams this year has eight riders, making for 176 total.

Recent Tour de France winners

  • 2022 — Jonas Vingegaard (DEN)
  • 2021 — Tadej Pogačar (SLO)
  • 2020 — Tadej Pogačar (SLO)
  • 2019 — Egan Bernal (COL)
  • 2018 — Geraint Thomas (GBR)
  • 2017 — Chris Froome (GBR)
  • 2016 — Chris Froome (GBR)
  • 2015 — Chris Froome (GBR)
  • 2014 — Vincenzo Nibali (ITA)
  • 2013 — Chris Froome (GBR)

Riders to watch

This year is expected to be a two-man battle for the general classification between two-time winner Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) and Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma), who emerged triumphant last year.

The 24-year-old Pogačar, regarded as the rider of his generation, was poised for a third straight title last year before Vingegaard, backed by a strong Jumbo-Visma squad, spoiled the campaign in the mountains. While the Slovenian Pogačar often has to fend for himself, the Danish Vingegaard, 26, has the backing of a “superteam” that includes do-it-all Belgian Wout van Aert and American Sepp Kuss to deliver him the yellow jersey.

Pogačar will undoubtedly be out for revenge, but questions are swirling about his fitness after he broke his wrist in a race earlier this year and had to miss some time. Whichever way the race goes, it’s always worth a reminder that this pair gave us an iconic moment of sportsmanship last year.

In the “last dance” category, we have British veteran Mark Cavendish (Astana Qazaqstan), French fan favorite Thibaut Pinot (Groupama-FDJ) and Slovakian sprint star Peter Sagan (TotalEnergies). All three plan to retire after the 2023 season (though Sagan said he plans to compete in mountain biking at the Paris Olympics).

Cavendish, 38, has 34 stage wins on the Tour — tied for the most ever with Eddy Merckx (who reached the mark in 1975). Cavendish is seeking one last win in his 14th Tour to retire as the record-holder after sitting out last year.

The 33-year-old Pinot won the young rider classification in 2014 and has since won three stages, most recently in 2019 (when he had to abandon the race with two stages to go after tearing a leg muscle while in fifth place).

Sagan, 33, owns a record seven green jersey wins and has won 12 stages, the last coming in 2019.

Egan Bernal (Ineos Grenadiers), the last man not named Pogačar or Vingegaard to win the Tour, will be in the peloton for the first time since 2020 after returning from a near-fatal crash in January 2022.

If you’ve followed the last few tours, you might also be wondering what’s up with Primož Roglič. The 2020 runner-up had to abandon the 2021 Tour before the ninth stage, and after starting the 2022 race as a Jumbo-Visma co-leader with Vingegaard, dropped out before the final rest day due to injuries. He did win the Giro d’Italia in May, but said he would take a break from racing to celebrate.

Beyond the general classification, you can monitor the additional races within the Tour: for the green jersey (points classification, generally considered a sprint competition) and polka dot jersey (king of the mountains).

NBC Sports’ Tour de France Coverage Embraces SNG; Access to Team Radios Is a Hit

Production is primarily remote, with the largest onsite presence since the pandemic.

By Ken Kerschbaumer, Editorial Director Friday, July 7, 2023 - 10:30 am Print This Story | Subscribe

Story Highlights

The Tour de France wrapped up Stage 7 of 21 today. and NBC Sports Tour de France Co-ordinating Producer Joel Felicio and much of the team are once again working remotely from Stamford, CT. The good news is that the remote workflows are working well and the onsite NBC Sports presence is the largest it has been since the pandemic (now up to 18).

“We’re creeping it back up,” Felicio says. “There is a little bit more of a footprint and then different tools and new ideas like the access to the team radios, which I am really excited about. That was something I have been discussing with the Tour for a long time as it has always been a fascination of mine to see the riders talking on the radio and then imagining what they are saying. And I think there are going to be some nuggets in there.”

The use of team radios has become the norm for NASCAR or F1 broadcasts. For NBC Sports and rightsholders around the globe, the ability to listen in to communications between the cyclists and their support teams will provide much more emotion and insight into strategy, course conditions, and more. The audio for the Tour de France isn’t live (for competitive and strategic reasons), but it is already making a difference. (To hear the difference it can make in storytelling, check out the Netflix documentary Unchained .)

“Once it’s cleared to go out, we’ll play it out,” says Felicio. “The Tour is managing all those signals as they made the deals with the teams to make this possible. At the end of the day, it gives us a chance to go back for the best bits.”

An NEP-supplied SNG unit in France allows the NBC Sports production team in Stamford much more control over the Tour de France production.

Woods Communications is once again providing technical facilities in France with a full-size mobile production unit as well as a new SNG truck (from NEP) and a bespoke mobile studio. Those personnel on site for NBC’s coverage work out of NEP’s HD 11 production unit while the SNG truck gives the NBC Sports team in the Stamford control room access to more video and audio signals.

“We don’t want to just take a line cut of the world feed as we’re telling our own stories,” says Felicio of the new SNG truck. “We can have 12 signals come into the SNG truck [in France] and a small switcher there send back three paths, including a multiviewer so we can see all the signals. That allows [those of us here in Stamford] to tell somebody in the truck [in France] to put a moto on a path or a heli shot on another. It’s like being onsite.”

NBC Sports is always looking to up its game, notes Woods Communications President Tommy Woods . “Although at-home production plays a major part, Peacock is continuing to make all the necessary moves to showcase the Tour from end to end with talent onsite. NBC continues to deliver a sense of place with best-in-class coverage to the U.S. cycling audience.”

One change in terms of on-air talent is that Christian Vande Velde , a retired professional cyclist, has shifted out of the studio and onto a motorbike and will be riding along with the competitors.

“He has become a really good asset for us,” says Felicio. “We’re using him as more of a third guy in the booth, even though he is on the course. He can hit a button and chime into the conversation whenever he wants without having any clunky throws.”

Having the talent onsite has been crucial because they can maintain their contacts with the teams, says NBC Sports producer David Michaels . “Having access to people and being able to talk to them after the stage is over and being part of the ambiance is important: they can see where the final turns are and assess the whole finish [for a stage. The difference when they are there versus not there is like night and day.”

Also onsite this year is the SMT graphics operator, who provides the very important pointer to identify riders. During the first year of the pandemic, the SMT operator was in North Carolina and then shifted to Stamford.

“It allows him to be more integrated with the timing,” he adds, “because he can have all of the feeds in front of him at all times.”

As for other technology, LiveU units are being used at the start line of each stage to provide a sense of place for the studio show, which is in Stamford.

“The LiveUs are magical and just part of a TV production that is, literally, like building and taking down a little city every day in two locations,” Felicio explains. “The [Tour] builds a little city at the start, and then they build a giant one at the finish, which has thousands of people and trucks. They are literally painting the logos on the finish line an hour before the guys come through. Then, 30 minutes after it’s over, the finish line comes down, and it’s like it was never there.”

Michaels, who works on the Tour de France remotely from his home in California, is on the phone with the team in France as well as with the team in Stamford, arranging a hit list of interview subjects for post-race coverage. It can get a bit chaotic, but he considers that just part of an event that is arguably the most challenging TV production on the planet.

“I’ve done just about every sporting event there is to do,” he says, “and, after 40 years of doing this, I am still amazed. The French production is incredible.”

You can watch the Tour de France on NBC , USA Network, and Peacock . You’ll get the most live coverage from Peacock, which streams every stage and the daily Tour de France Pre-Race Show . USA Network shows a mix of live and encore coverage, while NBC carries select portions of the race—primarily an encore of the final stage in Paris.

2023 Tour de France schedule

This year’s Tour de France begins on July 1 in Spain before crossing into France on the third day. As usual, the 21-day route features a solid mix of flat to mountainous terrain. Two rest days break up the action before racers make their way to the Avenue des Champs-Élysées in Paris on July 23.

2023 Tour de France Femmes schedule

Just as the men’s tour wraps up in Paris, the Tour de France Femmes takes off from Clermont-Ferrand. This is the second edition of the women’s race and features an eight-day route ending with an individual time trial in Pau.

Best TV plans for watching the Tour de France

A Peacock subscription is the best way to watch the Tour de France. Starting at $4.99 a month, the streaming service provides live and on-demand access to every stage of the men’s and women’s races. You’ll also get daily pre- and post-race studio coverage during the men’s competition, plus race highlights and rider interviews.

How to watch the Tour de France for free

*CableTV.com utilizes paid Amazon links. Amazon.com Price; $47.99 (as of 5/3/23 11:30 a.m. CT). Read full disclaimer .

The most convenient way to watch the Tour de France for free is by using an over-the-air (OTA) antenna to pick up your local NBC station. Unfortunately, NBC doesn’t show a lot of race coverage—mostly encore presentations of early and late stages. But it never hurts having an antenna in your TV setup.

If you don’t have an antenna, most cost between $20.00 and $60.00. We recommend the Mohu Leaf 50 for its 60-mile range and slim design. But you’ll want to verify the distance of your nearest NBC station by entering your zip code into the Federal Communications Commission’s Reception Map Tool . That’ll help determine if you need a more robust antenna, which we feature on our Best OTA Antennas page.

Pro tip: To make up for every stage NBC doesn’t air, you can stream free race recaps on NBC Sports’ YouTube channel .

The 110th Tour de France will stream on Peacock and air on NBC and USA Network throughout July 2023. Peacock offers the best way to watch Le Tour because it streams every stage from beginning to end. It also carries the entire women’s race, which begins the same day as the men’s competition ends.

If you’re a cycling fan without access to fast and reliable internet, most cable and satellite TV services have NBC and USA Network. Those channels don’t show as much Tour de France coverage as Peacock, but you’ll still see the most vital moments of the race.

Tour de France

The Tour de France will still be shown on cable television this year in the United States, even though much of the broadcast in North America is being switched to streaming platforms only.

On Tuesday NBC Universal finally revealed its programming lineup for the 2021 Tour de France, and the plan calls for 20 stages to be shown live or “tape-delayed” on NBC Sports Network, and the final stage on the Champs Élysées to be aired live on NBC Network. Phil Liggett will host the telecast alongside analyst Bob Roll, with reporter Steve Porino reporting on-site in France.

NBC Sports will also broadcast the traditional Tour de France pre-race show, hosted by Christian Vande Velde and Chris Horner, with retired rider Adam Blythe reporting from France.

All 21 stages will also be streamed live and without commercial interruption on NBC’s streaming service Peacock Premium, which replaces NBC Sports Gold as the race’s primary streaming platform in the U.S. Peacock Premium is free for Comcast Xfinity subscribers in the U.S., depending on a subscriber’s package. Fans can also purchase a Peacock Premium online subscription for $49 a year, or for $4.99 a month.

The decision to still broadcast the Tour de France on traditional television ends months of speculation that the race would only be live-streamed in the U.S. this year. Earlier this year  NBC Universal announced its plans to shutter NBC Sports Network at the end of 2021, and insiders speculated that the move would permanently switch the Tour de France broadcast to other channels, or to live-stream only.

In Canada, the Tour has switched to streaming-only broadcast. FloSports has exclusive rights to broadcast all 21 stages of the race on its cycling site FloBikes.com.

If you live in Canada, your options are less varied than those available to devices connecting to the internet from the United States.

FloBikes has exclusive broadcast rights in Canada for this year’s Tour. An annual subscription to Flo is CA$149.99 or CA$12.50/month.

Below is NBC’s schedule for Tour de France coverage across NBC Sports Network, NBC, and Peacock Premium. All times are Eastern Standard Time.

How to Watch 2024 Olympic Men’s Soccer Tournament & Schedule

There promises to be plenty of drama and flair on the pitch as some of international soccer's rising stars compete for Olympic glory.

nbc tour de france broadcast team

Whether you call it football or soccer, it’s clearly the global game and an Olympics mainstay dating back to 1900. But the men’s soccer tournament in the 2024 Paris Olympics might feel a bit different, seeing as how Brazil, the gold medal winners for the last two Summer Games , won’t even be featuring in the competition.

But that doesn’t mean there won’t be plenty of drama and flair when some of international soccer’s biggest rising stars take the pitch in the hopes of etching their names in history.

Who’s qualified for the Olympics Men’s Soccer Tournament?

Sixteen teams will be competing for gold at the 2024 Paris Olympics . Rosters will be restricted to under-23 players, though each team will be allowed to select three players over that age cutoff:

  • United States
  • Dominican Republic
  • New Zealand

What’s the format for the Olympics Men’s Soccer Tournament?

Teams have been drawn into four groups of four and will play the other teams in their group once during the group stage. Each win is worth three points, draws are worth one point, and losses worth zero points. At the end of the group stage, the top two teams in each group will advance into the knockout rounds. Standings will be based on total points earned. If there are tiebreakers needed, goal difference throughout the group stage will be first, followed by total goals scored, then head-to-head results.

The second season focuses on the drama from the 2023 Tour de France, with crashes, as they were in season 1, at the forefront and questions of doping highlighted in the one-minute trailer.

Clips from the trailer show interview segments with Thibaut Pinot, Tom Pidcock , Fabio Jakobsen, Julian Alaphilippe and Soudal-QuickStep team boss Patrick Lefevere.

Popular French veteran Pinot was riding his emotional final Tour de France before he retired at the end of the season but curiously, he is shown in the trailer being asked about doping. “So do you think he’s doped or not?” says the interviewer before cutting away without an answer, with the preceding clip also stating “The Tour seems to go from one scandal to the next”.

Only eight teams featured directly in the first season: Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale, Alpecin-Deceuninck, Bora-Hansgrohe, EF Education-EasyPost, Groupama-FDJ, Ineos Grenadiers, Visma-Lease a Bike and Soudal-QuickStep as they are now known, but superstar Tadej Pogačar’s UAE Team Emirates side will be one of the new squads featuring in season 2.

The news that the runner-up from the previous two Tours would star in the documentary was learned during last year’s race after it was also revealed that Mark Cavendish would star in his bid for a record-breaking 35th stage win at the Tour.

Cavendish ultimately crashed out of the race during Stage 8 with a broken collarbone, which is shown in the trailer and should feature in season 2.

The public fallout of Lefevere and Alaphilippe , which has gone on for months in the media, also looks like it will feature, with clips of both the double World Champion and his team boss forming part of the trailer.

“Julian Alaphilippe costs a lot of money,” says Lefevere, with the French star responding “Too much for Patrick” when asked how much it is he earns.

Jasper Philipsen is again shown after featuring heavily in season 1 where his journey from Jasper “Disaster” to Tour de France stage winner was documented.

“We’re not here to make friends with other teams,” says Philipsen while laughing with star lead-out man Mathieu van der Poel. The Belgian fast man announced himself as the best sprinter in the world at the 2023 Tour with four stage wins.

The pair’s Alpecin-Deceuninck team were the best sprint squad at the 2023 race, dominating the finishes with aggressive but fair tactics in the final runs to the line.

Also shown heavily in the trailer, as mentioned, are crashes for the likes of Carlos Rodríguez and Fabio Jakobsen, with this dramatic aspect of the sport an apparent priority for the producers to highlight.

Season 1 comprised of eight roughly 45-minute episodes and dropped just before the Tour de France last year and was met with mixed reviews despite being an overall success. Unchained is made by the same company, Quadbox, that produces the extremely successful Formula 1 Netflix show, ‘Drive to Survive’.

It was one of several new sports documentaries to hit Netflix with professional Golf, Tennis and Rugby among those getting their own series alongside Cycling.

Key storylines in the first season included the comeback of Jakobsen from a life-threatening crash, the chaos on the cobbled stage, the pressure of being on a French team, Pidcock's Alpe d'Huez triumph and how Jumbo-Visma beat Pogačar with Jonas Vingegaard .

Initial reviews were mixed, with expert cycling fans happy to see rarely seen behind-the-scenes moments but critical of the carefully edited narratives that focused on the teams involved and ignored key moments of the 2022 Tour de France.

It was ultimately enough for a second season to be renewed and confirmed just ahead of the start of the 2023 race in Bilbao. The series is designed to entertain and attract new cycling fans just as the Drive to Survive series has done for Formula 1 since its first season in 2019, now in its sixth.

MADRID — The 2026 Spanish Vuelta will start in Monaco, organizers announced.

The grand tour’s first stage will take place entirely in the tiny principality known for its iconic Formula 1 event. The second stage of the three-week race will also start in Monaco.

This year’s Vuelta which is scheduled to start in August will begin in Lisbon. The Portuguese capital was the first foreign city to host a Vuelta start back in 1997. The Vuelta has also had starts in the Netherlands and France.

This summer, Monaco will host the start of the final stage of this summer’s Tour, which will be held outside Paris for the first time since 1905 because of a clash with the Olympics.

Monaco also provided the start of the 2009 Tour de France.
