The first time I snorkeled at Molokini Crater, I was eight years old and I was blown away by both the fish (beautiful!) and the slide off the boat (the stuff an eight year old’s dreams are made of).

Since then I’ve gone on nearly a dozen trips and tours to find the best Molokini snorkeling tour experiences. And I’ve found some great ones.

Molokini crater is a partially submerged volcanic crater that is home to a marine life sanctuary as well as a bird sanctuary. The crater is thought to have been formed from a volcanic eruption 230,000 years ago. The island crater is a popular spot for snorkeling and diving as the crater has crystal clear water and great visibility as well as a large and varied fish population.

Molokini Snorkeling Tour FAQs

Are snorkeling tours worth it.

We love snorkeling tours and think they are definitely worth it for a few reasons:

  • Get instructions and head out with an experienced guide: this is helpful and important whether you are new to snorkeling or you’ve done it a few times. A great guide can help make the experience even better and they can help you learn precautions that will keep you safe in the ocean.
  • Keep the reef safe: when snorkeling from the shore, it is easy to inadvertently damage coral and rock if you’re not careful. The coral is delicate and has been growing for thousands of years. It’s important to keep it safe!
  • Have a great time on the water: getting a view of Maui from the water is such a different perspective. Relaxing on a boat and getting to enjoy a few hours on the water with a knowledgeable guide talking story gives you memories you can take home.

Note: the only way to visit Molokini Crater is with a snorkeling tour. You cannot get there from the shore. Molokini Crater is a highlight of a trip to Maui (check out the other 32 things on our list of best things to do on Maui ).

What is the best time of day to snorkel Molokini Crater?

Normally, you’ll find that it’s best to snorkel Molokini Crater in the morning. Most tours leave in the morning in hopes of finding the calmest waters. In the afternoon, the tradewinds can kick up and the ocean conditions get rougher.

If you’re headed to Maui, make sure you review our ultimate Maui Guide . It has nearly everything you need to know to help you plan your trip. And it’s all free.

How long is the boat ride from Kihei to Molokini?

The great thing about leaving on a snorkeling trip from Kihei or Wailea is the ride to Molokini is really quick. From Wailea, the ride is around 15 minutes and from Kihei the ride is around 20 minutes!

Compared to a 45-minute ride from Ma’alaea Harbor, leaving from Kihei or Wailea is fast and efficient.

There’s a good chance you’ll need a car when you’re on Maui. We love to get ours with Discount Hawaii Car Rental . National carriers and no prepayment — it’s a winner!

Where do Molokini snorkeling tours depart from?

Molokini snorkeling tours depart from three different locations on Maui: Ma’alaea Harbor, Kihei Small Boat Ramp, and Maluaka Beach in Wailea.

Ma’alaea Harbor is in central Maui and is the furthest away from Molokini Crater but the most number of boats leave from there.

Kihei Small Boat Ramp and Maluaka Beach in Wailea are closer to Molokini Crater and are much more convenient for anyone staying in South Maui, but fewer boats leave from there.

We give you options for snorkeling tours departing from each location.

Is Turtle Town the same as Molokini Crater?

Many Molokini Crater snorkeling tours add a second stop on their trip at Turtle Town. But Turtle Town is not the same as Molokini Crater. Turtle Town is a snorkeling spot famous for turtle sightings that is located off the coast near Makena Landing . This stop is a nice compliment to Molokini Crater as you won’t see any sea turtles in the crater — but you will see fish, eels, and if you’re lucky, an octopus.

Best Molokini Snorkeling Tours from Kihei

Best Molokini Snorkeling Tours from Kihei

Two great options leave from the Kihei Small Boat Harbor. And both are small boats — get ready for an adventure on a power raft.

Redline Rafting

Redline Rafting’s two-hour tour feels like an express ride in the best possible way. Jump on the raft and you’ll be out to the crater in 20 quick minutes. Once there you’ll have plenty of time to snorkel in the crater with your small group (the raft only holds 11 passengers!).

Their five-hour tour includes a little more excitement. Not only do you snorkel in Molokini Crater but you are also able to head to the back wall of the crater (weather permitting), which is an adventure. And you’ll spend some time at Turtle Town as well before having lunch and heading back to Kihei.

Check out our video of our snorkeling trip with Redline Rafting:

Makena Coast Charters

Also aboard a raft, Makena Coast Charters offers two tours.

During their two-hour tour , it’s similar to the Redline Rafting two-hour tour. This is an express route for people who are excited to get in the water at Molokini Crater. After a 20 minute ride to the crater, you’ll get an hour or more to explore the water.

Their four-hour tour loops in a stop at Turtle Town. You’ll first get roughly an hour to snorkel at Molokini Crater followed by another hour of snorkeling at Turtle Town. After snorkeling you’ll enjoy a meal and beverage service before they return you back to the small boat harbor.

Best Molokini Snorkeling Tours from Wailea

I don’t like to play favorites because all of the tours on this list are excellent, but we love the sunrise snorkel with Kai Kanani. While it is a very early departure, you get to spend some time in the crater before anyone else gets there. After snorkeling in the crater, you head to Turtle Town.

Kai Kanani leaves right from Maluaka Beach (which is stunning), but you should expect to get a little wet during the beach loading. Once you’re on board, you’re off on a luxurious adventure. The crew is fantastic and you’re treated to breakfast, hot drinks, and a beautiful catamaran.

If you’re not an early riser, they also have a mid-morning snorkel which is also fantastic. The same tour just a few hours later.

In case it’s not clear, we just love this tour and so do our kids. Check out our experience with them (and our stay at the Grand Wailea).

Best Molokini Snorkeling Tours from Ma’alaea

A trip to Ma’alaea is a further drive from South Maui and it takes longer to get to Molokini Crater on the boat, but it’s a great option for people who like a larger boat (no rafts!), or need an easier accessible boat (no beach loading).

Sail Maui – 10% OFF!

We’ve done several Sail Maui tours and we’ve had an excellent time every time. Their Molokini Snorkeling tour is no exception. Leave for the 4.5 hour tour from Ma’alaea Harbor aboard their Paragon II boat. While the boat ride to Molokini is longer from Ma’alaea, they make use of it by offering you a delightful breakfast. After snorkeling at Molokini Crater, enjoy lunch on your ride back to Ma’alaea.

This is a great option for passengers of all ages as the boat is comfortable and getting onboard from the harbor is easy.

Best Molokini Snorkeling Tour

Fair Winds II

Family fun is the focus on the Four Winds Molokini Crater tour . It’s the largest boat on this list, but they have some specific amenities that can make going with a larger group totally worth it. Note: their boat capacity is 149 people but they advertise that they keep their tours smaller than that to ensure comfortability.

On their Molokini snorkeling tour, you’ll get to snorkel Molokini Crater but kids are front and center on the tour. There is a waterslide (that even adults enjoy), a glass-bottom viewing room, cookies, temporary tattoos, and more. In the glass bottom room, a few kids or adults can take a peek at what’s underwater, without actually having to get into the water.

Best Snorkeling Tours in Kihei and South Maui ( that aren’t to Molokini Crater )

While we love snorkeling to Molokini Crater, sticking closer to shore is also a great option. We have two suggestions for snorkeling tours that don’t include a boat, but still have great snorkeling.

Best Molokini Snorkeling Tour

Maui SUP and Snorkel Adventures

Get in some morning exercise along with a snorkeling tour on an SUP adventure and snorkeling tour . This two-hour tour is private and includes both your SUP rental as well as your snorkeling gear. Head out from Makena Landing (near Turtle Town) and paddle the scenic coastline. As it’s a private tour, it can be geared to your personal activity level so you can go as fast (or as slow) as you want on the SUP. If you haven’t tried SUP yet, your guide will give you a lesson and help you navigate the new skill as you head out onto the water.

Maui Snorkel Tours

This is a unique guided snorkeling tour. They offer shore-based tours , meaning no boats are involved at all. You’ll head out in a very small group with a guide (or a private tour) after a briefing on land about marine biology and how to snorkel.

Why is a shore-based excursion so great? On a tour boat, there’s no one available to give you 1:1 guidance for how to properly snorkel. With a guide, they are taking you step by step through how to snorkel, where to snorkel, and equipping you with the knowledge that you can use on future shore snorkeling trips.

Once you’ve mastered your snorkeling skills, you may feel comfortable enjoying some of the other best snorkeling spots on Maui .

Molokini Crater

Molokini crater

ABOUT MOLOKINI

Molokini is a rare, partially-submerged volcanic crater.

It is located just a few miles off Maui’s shore and is Hawaii’s only island marine sanctuary. Scientists believe Molokini Crater formed about 150 thousand years ago.

Molokini rises from 300 feet below the ocean’s surface and is just under a half-mile wide and peaks at about 160 feet above sea level with half of it being hidden under the surface of the ocean. Divers and snorkelers flock from all around the world to experience the incredible underwater marine life.

SNORKELING EXPERIENCE

Island marine preserve

The isolation of Molokini Crater creates a unique snorkeling experience. There are significant reasons why snorkeling at Molokini is so special. The quality of the water surrounding Molokini is superior, providing unsurpassed clarity. Visibility is consistently excellent, often in excess of 150 feet. Molokini is rock, with no soil to wash down into the water.

Absent of sediment, the water is amazingly clear allowing excellent sunlight penetration. This enhanced sunlight feeds the algae living inside the coral. Offshore currents bring food, while flushing away what little sediment exists. The result is a uniquely healthy coral reef providing unsurpassed snorkeling. Located in the middle of Molokini, this reef is protected from waves and surges.

Nature Conservation

Inside the sheltered arms of the crater, Molokini is an amazing underwater Marine Sanctuary . Underwater at Molokini is a flourishing coral reef, where thousands of fish and marine animals cohabitate. Molokini’s shallow reef is teeming with a wide variety of colorful and fascinating fish and marine animals. You will experience a rare opportunity to closely observe the marine life at Molokini.

Your Molokini snorkel adventure is one you will cherish and not soon forget! Molokini is the ultimate snorkeling experience, and because of its crystal clear sheltered waters, Molokini snorkeling is a safe and unique adventure for the entire family. From its shallow calm waters, diverse marine life and beautiful coral reef, Molokini is superb.

Molokini Island was declared a Marine Life Conservation District in 1977. Since then, with increased concerns and interest in the health of Hawaii’s Reefs, the State of Hawaii in partnership with the University of Hawaii monitors the water quality and coral coverage at Molokini. Commercial operators including the Pride of Maui work together to protect Molokini, removing nothing from its waters.

Passenger vessels are tied to moorings, instead of dropping anchors on the reef. Fish and marine animals are not fed or harassed. From visitors to those of us who make a living by sharing the amazing beauty of Molokini with others, we’re all stewards and our protective measures are vital to the future sustainability of Molokini.

Seabirds crowd the steep slopes of Molokini. There are two primary species of nesting birds, Wedge-tailed Shearwaters and Bulwer’s Petrels. Over a thousand pairs nest in the rocky cliffs. The vast majority are Shearwaters, which feed at sea during the day, returning to their nests and chicks at night.

Brown Boobies also roost at Molokini, along with large Frigate birds, whose wingspan can reach 7 feet across. The Frigate birds with superior flying skills harass other seabirds until they drop their food, which the Frigate bird recovers in mid-air. Hawaiians named them Iwa birds, which translated means thief.

TWO BOATS, TWO ADVENTURES

Which one will you choose?

You can sail to Molokini Crater in two ways. On the smaller Leilani, with a capacity of up to 40 people, or a larger catamaran Pride of Maui for up to 149 people.

Important info to know

Molokini Crater history

During World War II, Molokini was used for target practice. Bombing and strafing left impact craters, shrapnel, and bullets along the slopes of Molokini, still visible today. It is believed that roosting and nesting birds avoided Molokini during the War, because of target practice and strafing maneuvers.

Molokini Crater Maui World History

What awaits you

Snorkeling at Molokini is unlike any other Maui snorkeling experience because of its unique dynamics and underwater majesty. Molokini has beautiful coral reef and marine animals With over 200 species of fish, many endemic to Hawaii,

exploring the coral reef is the experience of a lifetime. A rare treat is the gentle plankton-feeding Whale Shark, known to visit Molokini. Whale sharks are very large plankton feeders (aka vegetarians) which are not a threat to humans.

Best Maui Snuba Tour Experience

A shallow channel with coral heads, Tako Flats is an area of Molokini where you can find marine life including octopus, Manta ray, nudibranchs and barracudas. Good for beginner to intermediate divers.

MIDDLE REEF

A large mount that rises in the center of Molokini, the Middle reef is home to a variety of tropical fish, including trumpetfish, butterflyfish, whitetips, and Giant Trevally. Ideal for beginner and intermediate divers.

REEF’S END

Reef’s End is the western tip of the Molokini Crater. It’s a long healthy reef covered in Cauliflower coral and features a wealth of life, including reef sharks, morays, Squirrelfish, and Giant Trevally. Perfect for beginner divers and snorkelers.

SHARK CONDOS

Down around 130 feet, you’ll find harmless reef sharks and lobster hiding in the caves and underwater platforms.

This side of the Molokini starts around 30 feet and slopes down to about 60 feet. If you’re close to the crater wall, you’ll find an abundance of butterflyfish in the shallow areas. Suitable for divers at the beginner or intermediate level.

FLYING SEA CLIFFS

A favorite for scuba divers that love the many hanging shelves around 50 feet down. Beneath the main shelf is another 80 feet of water before reaching the bottom. Under the ledges, red sponges and tube coral can be seen only with powerful lights.

THE BACK SIDE

The world-renowned back side of Molokini Crater is rich with white, grey, and black reef sharks, tropical fish, Manta rays, and spinner dolphins. The wall dive is a vertical drop most often enjoyed around 80 feet down. It is ideal for experienced divers.

EDGE OF THE WORLD

Edge of the World is an incredible dive. It has the deepest spot along the backside of Molokini at around 250 feet. The area is constantly out of the sunlight, which allows a dwelling for exotic and unusual marine life.

Since 1985, Maui Snorkeling has run thousands of Maui Molokini Snorkel Tours, hundreds of Private Boat Charters, watched tens of thousands of Humpback whales during their annual migrations and has provided the opportunity for people to swim with the most peaceful and beautiful Sea Turtles that Maui has to offer. It’s an honor to be considered one of the best snorkeling boats in Maui and we spend each and every day maintaining that reputation. We certainly understand and appreciate the responsibility that goes along with carrying the Maui Snorkeling name!

Our boats, Lani Kai I (retired) and Lani Kai II, have carried close to 1 million passengers and have served families, honeymooners, senior citizens, young children, military personnel, and vacationers from every country on the globe. Lani Kai was retired in March 2020 and we welcomed Lani Kai II in August 2020. Lani Kai II is a 53-foot vessel that can accommodate up to 67 passengers. Our whale watching, snorkeling, and turtle tours leave out of Ma’alaea Harbor and travel to Molokini Crater and Turtle Town.

Since her launch in August 2020, Lani Kai II has hosted major Hollywood productions, professional athletes and celebrities, and thousands of Maui visitors. We are committed to protecting our marine life and celebrating the beauty of Hawai’i!

Whether you are two honeymooners looking for a breathtaking snorkeling experience, a couple celebrating 25 years of marriage, or a young family hoping for an unforgettable experience, Maui Snorkeling is one of the top things to do in Maui and Molokini. We are happy to provide the best all-inclusive packages in Maui that includes a morning snorkeling tour, afternoon snorkeling tour, and group & private charters.

Maui Snorkeling is proud to offer BYOB service to our guests. We listened to our customers and realized that everyone has their own specific requests for alcohol. The only limitations are no glass and no drinking until you are done snorkeling, swimming, and sliding!

My friend and I had a great time on this tour. The food was very tasty (continental breakfast & sandwich lunch) and the drinks available for purchase were strong & very reasonably priced. The snorkeling was amazing & I could've snorkeled all day long. Staff was very professional, efficient & friendly. I highly recommend this tour.

This was a very fun day! We first stopped at Molokini crater to snorkel. The water was very clear and we saw a good variety of fish in the ree Overall this was an excellent trip! We saw much larger boats with a lot of people, but this boat was a good size with an excellent mooring space. I would highly recommend this trip!

Great crew and experience! I've snorkeled before but my boyfriend hadn't and they made him feel super comfortable. You get about 1 hour in the actual water but the water around Molokini was clear and calm even though getting out there was a little rough. The drinks at the end were a nice touch! Would go back with this crew next time!

Our family had a wonderful experience with the sunrise Molokini and Turtle Town Snorkeling adventure. The staff were casual, friendly, and fun. The trip was well organized and the snorkeling was fantastic. We saw 7 sea turtles and they offer lots of mechanism (e.g. boogie boards and floatation belts) that supported my son feel comfortable.
