                                                             , j oin us on a unique eco-tour to search for wild atlantic bottlenose dolphins and view the wildlife of the outer banks. biologists run these dolphin tours as part of their research on these beloved aquatic animals, so you know this will be an interesting trip. passengers will be able to see how researchers with the outer banks center for dolphin research , a nonprofit organization, conduct their research and hear about some of the discoveries from more than a decade of studies and monitoring. some of the hundreds of atlantic bottlenose dolphins in the area show up so frequently they’ve even been given names, like “rake,” “scarlet,” and “onion.” onion was first identified in beaufort, north carolina almost 20 years ago, and he has been sighted there almost every winter since. it has been discovered that nags head is his summer home, along with an extensive family of more than 100 members. in his early years, onion had an unfortunate encounter with a boat propeller and his damaged fin has made him one of the most easily recognized dolphins around. .

Conducted on a 40-foot covered pontoon boat in the Roanoke Sound, the trip takes one and a half to two hours. Along the way, researchers will talk about their work and share their discoveries from their ongoing study. While the boat is moving, dolphins will be playing in their natural habitat alongside the vessel. Passengers will also learn about the pelicans, osprey and other birds that congregate in the sounds, as well as the ecology and history of this dynamic area. The Outer Banks is an ideal place to take a dolphin boat trip to learn even more about these miraculous creatures. These excursions will get you close enough to safely connect with these incredible animals and to experience them in the wild, in a world where humans are visitors and the bottlenose dolphin is happily at home. Looking to get out of the house and on the water? Take a fishing trip on the  Miss Oregon Inlet II  head boat. With the shortest drive time to fishing grounds around Oregon Inlet, they catch many different species of fish, such as spot, croaker, trout, bluefish, puppy drum, sea mullet and more, and they’re known as the “flounder pounder.” They have everything you need to fish, and everyone is covered under their fishing license. The head boat takes two half-day inshore trips a day. They also offer a Twilight Fishing Cruise most days that includes two hours of fishing and sunset viewing. Crystal Dawn Head Boat

Looking to get out on the water? Crystal Dawn , docked at Pirate's Cove Marina on the Nags Head/Manteo Causeway, is a comfortable, 65-foot, double-decker party boat / head boat that's all about good times on the water. Whether you want to take the kids fishing in the sound and around Oregon Inlet or gather up your friends and family for a party cruise around Roanoke Island, they have got you covered. For sightseeing on the sound, Sunset Cruises are offered from 6 to 7:30 pm nightly in April, May, September and October. During the summer season in June, July, and August cruises are from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Along the way you'll see lighthouses, historic sites, working watermen and wildlife like birds and dolphin.  Crystal Dawn  is available for private charters for birthday and anniversary celebrations, bachelor and bachelorette parties, small weddings, school groups, ashes at sea ceremonies, family functions and more. Oregon Inlet Fishing Center

Over the last 70 years, Oregon Inlet Fishing Center has earned legendary status for its celebrated charter fishing fleet and proximity to the best fishing grounds. It earned this reputation as a no-frills facility, but big changes in 2024 have brought modernizations and upgrades to match its iconic status. A beautiful new, climate-resistant, two-story building elevated 11 feet above ground is now home to a retail area and tackle shop run by Oceans East Bait & Tackle, a new restaurant called Sea Chef Kitchen and Oregon Inlet Fishing Center's dedicated charter reservation area and event room.

First and foremost, Oregon Inlet Fishing Center is all about making memories on the water. A fleet of 48 boats offers a variety of fishing excursions at Oregon Inlet Fishing Center year-round (weather permitting). Nearshore, inshore vessels offer half-day or full-day trips, while the headboat,  Miss Oregon Inlet II , offers a choice of morning or afternoon inlet/sound fishing. Offshore vessels travel to the Gulf Stream, where anglers enjoy a full day on the water going for billfish, tuna, mahi mahi and more, depending on the season. Make-up charters are available if you don't have a full party. Anglers aboard charters do not need to purchase fishing licenses, and all tackle and bait are provided. Even if you're not fishing or going out on the water, watching the boats come in with their catches is fine entertainment. Come to the docks between 3 and 5 p.m. and you'll see the day's catches being unloaded. Be sure to check out the world-record blue marlin replica mount (caught in 1974) displayed in front of the new building and take a photo of your group in front of the record-setting marlin! 

Come inside the tackle shop and retail store for a wide selection of bait, tackle, fishing and boating gear, hardware, sunglasses, apparel and footwear, souvenirs and Oregon Inlet Fishing Center apparel. Sea Chef Kitchen provides counter service with indoor and outdoor seating, take-out and grab-and-go meals for charters. 

Boaters can launch boats at the nearby NPS boat ramp, which has five launching lanes, courtesy docks and about 75 parking spaces for vehicles with trailers. Oregon Inlet Fishing Center sells fuel for boats (gas and diesel). You'll find Oregon Inlet Fishing Center 8 miles south of Whalebone Junction in Nags Head.

This is a toy store like none other on the island. If you like toys, especially kites... this is a great shop. The staff was super helpful and engaging. We bought about five kites... several for grandkids. Some for us grandparents. They have a lot of really interesting quality gifts and toys. If you are on the island (especially if you have kids) you should definitely stop by.

This place is huge, excellent selection, friendly staff, great place to find rare hot wheels and squishmallows in the toy section. Always have cool shirts for sale too. Coupons for this place can be found on the backs of certain coupon books.

Items are nice and they have a good variety of items, however, the staff was unnecessarily rude and unpleasant. After a long day at the beach with my kids I needed some items. I had about $200 worth of items in my hands to purchase and got confused where the line was for the register. I ended up on the other side where the register was and started asking another customer if I was on the right or wrong side and when I realized I was on the wrong side the cashier came up and seemed upset I was on her side of the register....mind you there is no barricade or anything else that I would inherently know right away that I wandered in the wrong area. She then scolded me and said "that was not cool" like I was trying to steal from her....I get you have to be cautious but I told her that I just got confused where to check out since there was no one there. If you are that concerned with people wandering in that area either stay at the register or put up a barricade or sign so folks can't get so confused. If I didn't need the items for the next day I would have just left and not giving them my business but I ended up still making my large purchase. I also witnessed the same cashier be rude to another customer who had just purchased a bracelet that broke in the parking lot and she gave her a hard time about getting her money back or exchanging it after she had literally just bought it. Would not go here again!

Skip the predictable Super Wings and the raunchy, dirty Reef shops. Go to Kitty Hawk Kites instead! You will not be disappointed. Quality and selection is much better. It's clean, well maintained, and the staff are great. They really love helping you learn about kites and surfing.

We signed up for the surfing lessons as it was always a dream of mine to try it out. Couldn't have been happier with choosing Kitty Hawk Kites/Surf Co. Our instructor, John D., was extremely enthusiastic, informative, and patient with all of us. He explained the process very easily and all of us had a wonderful time. My youngest son became a natural by the end of the day! Cannot wait to keep practicing. Side note- I liked the Rodanthe location because it seems a bit quieter than the more northerly destinations. Thanks John!

We went there to rent some bikes. We left without renting any bikes or getting any information. There were two staff members: a girl who was clearly batting her eyes and flirting with the guy who was there. We weren't greeted when we came in, they didn't bother to stop their conversation until we stood right next to them for a full minute, and her demeanor and speech was CLEARLY of someone who was NOT AT ALL INTERESTED in providing any help or service to us. It was a pathetic display.

Pleasant shopping experience and lots of items to choose from. They had a really nice selection of men's clothing especially. In my opinion, the clothes here are of better quality than a lot of the other OBX shops. They stock brands such as Hurley, North Face, Vans, Life is Good, Natural Life, Roxy, Quiksilver & more.

Great shopping options and good prices. Staff was pleasant and talkative. Also I got a really nice pair of Chacos on sale here. We came here 2-3 times to buy shirts and other gifts

This facility was just as large as every other Kitty Hawk Kites. There were not multiple levels spaced out by stairs like I usually see- a positive in my mind. I visited with several family members, and we each picked out a few things to purchase that were mixtures of touristy items and practical items. The line appeared to be a bit backed up due to social distancing standards, but another employee quickly opened another register to speed up the check-out process.

Just completed 3 days of kiteboarding lessons. What an incredible sport! Difficult learning curve, but once you harness the wind to get you up and out of the water and flying across the sound you'll be hooked. My instructor, Sam, really knew how to communicate so that I made some great strides and I am stoked to get back on the water. Yes, "stoked" is a completely inappropriate word for a 50 year old man to use, but I'm embracing the culture, so step off...
