All the wonders of Istanbul

Turkey’s largest city is also the only metropolis in the world located on two continents – Europe and Asia. Istanbul, or the former Byzantium and Constantinople, is a city particularly popular with lovers of the Orient and history. What attractions await tourists visiting Istanbul? You will not only bring back beautiful souvenirs from your trip to this extraordinary city, but also unforgettable memories! Check our article to get to know what is worth seeing here.

Istanbul – the most interesting attractions of the city

There are some places in Istanbul that you cannot miss during your trip. One of them is certainly the Hippodrome, a square in Istanbul that served as a racecourse for horses and chariots in Byzantine times. The Hippodrome is home to the Egyptian Obelisk, the Obelisk of Constantine VII and the Serpentine Column. In addition to all above there is a German Fountain, donated by Kaiser Wilhelm, that has been standing here from 1898.

The largest and most lavish mosque in Istanbul is the Blue Mosque, also known as the Sultan Ahmed Mosque. The structure was built between 1609 and 1616 and is one of the last examples of the so-called Classical period of Islamic art in Turkey. One of Istanbul’s greatest attractions is also, of course, the Hagia Sophia Mosque, which was formerly a Christian temple – the Church of the Divine Wisdom. It is one of the most important works of Byzantine architecture and a major destination for many tourists visiting Turkey. It housed a museum from 1934 to 2020, but today Hagia Sophia is once again used as a mosque, as it was between the 15th and 20th century.

Another amazing thing Istanbul has to offer are the underground water cisterns, especially the Basilica Cistern, which is the largest structure of its kind built in Istanbul in Byzantine times – the vault is supported by as many as 366 columns, giving it the unusual impression of a forest of columns. While in the city, it is also worth visiting Istanbul’s Grand Bazaar, also known as the Indoor Bazaar. It is one of the largest shopping areas in all of Turkey, covering as much as 60 hectares. There is no better place to buy souvenirs, drink coffee or taste delicious Turkish delicacies.

We had just one day in Wroclaw and a decision to join Walkative tours was the right one! These guys are amazing! Their stories are very informative, full of history, legends, funny jokes! They took us to all astonishing places of Wroclaw. Perfect for a day trip to this lovely city! Thank you, Lukasz and Matt for the brilliant tours!

Dawie’s tour was the best theatre in Paris as well as informative!!!! He is great – even in the rain. Do it.

My group really enjoyed the amount of history explained in the tour, it was a nice way to get a lot of information on several of the key sites in the center of Paris in a compact amount of time. Excellent for orientation and background. I would certainly do other tours in the future.

Admire the exterior architecture of opulent mosques and discover the amazing history of Istanbul with this guided tour.

The Hagia Sophia

Description

We'll begin this free guided tour of Istanbul at 10:30 am at the centrally located Sultanahmet Square . Just a short walk from the square, we'll find the famous  Blue Mosque and the Hagia Sophia Basilica, two of Istanbul's most iconic temples.

On a stop in front of their emblematic facades, you'll be able to appreciate all the intricate (and surprising) architectural details that usually go unnoticed.

Continuing on, we'll head in the direction of Topkapi Palace and the Basilica Cistern or "submerged palace," the latter of which houses a great secret that has even been mentioned in one of Dan Brown's novels.

Next, we'll explore the square where the Roman Hippodrome of Constantinople used to be located. In the past, this great public space was where the popular chariot races were held, "the Formula 1 of Antiquity". You'll learn all about these competitions and why they achieved success similar to that of today's formula racing.

In the final stretch of this free guided tour, we'll visit the German Fountain , the Obelisk of Thutmose III and the Hagia Irene . Then, around 1 pm, this free tour of Istanbul will end, in front of the Little Hagia Sophia .

Once the Ottoman Sultan's administrative headquarters and main residence until the mid 19th century, the Topkapi Place is now one of the most famous museums in the city. According to history, the Topkapi Palace was where the Sultan and his beautiful concubines lived and worked between the 15th and 19th centuries.

The tour includes exploring the various rooms and sections in the palace, including The Church of Santa Irene, the harem, the Imperial treasury, weapon collection, and many more. Your guide will also share fun stories about the daily life of Sultans during the Ottoman Period.

Note: Tickets for admission to the palace are required to join this tour.

Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia Tour

Are you interested in calligraphy, architecture, and Islam art? We've got just the perfect walking tour for you:  Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia Tour .

In this 3-hour tour, you will enjoy the beauty of Islam and Greek Orthodox architecture. With a small group of travelers plus your guide, you'll get an inclusive entrance to the famous Blue Mosque.

The Blue Mosque is one of the most photographed monuments in the city. Here you'll find the most intricate tile work and stained glass you'll ever see in your life. You'll also get to learn about Sultan Ahmet's legacy as your guide talks about his rule and political strength during his reign.

After exploring the Blue Mosque, your guide will take you to visit Hagia Sophia. Considered the world's oldest and fastest-completed cathedral, Hagia Sophia is an architectural marvel. But what makes it unique is its fascinating history. Once a church, Hagia Sophia was made into a mosque and embodied Byzantine architecture. From originally being a cathedral, it existed as a mosque during the Ottoman Period.

Today, the Galata Tower is a museum and historical symbol of Istanbul.

Aside from visiting the tower, this walking tour also includes strolling through Istanbul's most historic neighborhood. You'll get to visit the famous Pera district and see the luxury hotels that were once the residence of royalties and renowned writers such as Ernest Hemingway and Agatha Christie.

This tour will also take you to Istanbul's most well-known street, Istiklal Avenue. Here you'll find dozens of shops and restaurants that sell local Turkish goods and authentic Turkish food. Plus, you'll enjoy a ride on Istanbul's second oldest subway.
