5 Reasons Why Your Cruise Control Stopped Working

Cruise Control Not Working

It would be difficult to find a vehicle on the road today without cruise control. This invaluable feature makes driving long distances easier but can also cause trouble when it malfunctions. Understanding the reasons your cruise control stopped working ensures that you can get the problem fixed quickly for a more enjoyable ride.

While this fault can cause issues with the cruise control system itself, there could also be an effect on the acceleration of your vehicle. That’s why you want to have it looked at as soon as you notice a problem. Let’s take a quick look at the reasons your cruise control may have stopped working.

Reasons Why Your Cruise Control Stopped Working

The most common reason a cruise control stops working is due to a blown fuse or a defective brake pedal switch . It can also be caused by issues with the throttle control system or the ABS. In older cruise control systems, it can be caused by a broken vacuum line.

Here is a more detailed list of the possible reasons your cruise control is not working:

1. Blown Fuse

broken fuse

All electrical systems in the vehicle are controlled by fuses. Your cruise control system is attached to a fuse that can blow if there is a short circuit or fault. Without a good fuse, the cruise control system can’t work at all.

Thankfully, it’s not difficult to find and replace a blown fuse. Look in the owner’s manual to find the fuse that corresponds with the cruise control technology.

2. Defective Brake Pedal Switch

push brake pedal

The brake pedal switch is responsible for turning the brake lights on and off based on the pedal position. Cruise control systems are designed to disengage whenever your brake pedal gets pressed.

Because the cruise control is wired into the brake pedal switch, any fault can cause it to stop working. When the brake pedal switch malfunctions, the car believes the brakes are engaged, causing the system to turn off automatically. Not only that, but your car’s brake light might also be stuck on, leaving confused drivers in your wake.

3. Malfunctioning Speed Sensor

abs sensor close

Speed sensors are located on every wheel or differential. The purpose of these sensors is to monitor the speed of the wheels to determine if traction control is needed.

The speed sensors are also part of the cruise control system. When a sensor fails, the cruise control can stop working and the speedometer might act strange as well.

If there is an issue with a speed sensor, it will often show with an ABS warning light or a check engine light on the dashboard.

RELATED: 3 Symptoms of a Bad ABS Wheel Speed Sensor

4. Electrical Issues

cruise control buttons

The cruise control system is electronic, with many components working together to make the system operate. If the cruise control fails to work, you want to check the wiring harness and associated connectors for a fault.

You also need to ensure that the voltage source is supplying enough power to the system. Even the smallest fault can cause defects with the cruise control. In many cases, there can be an issue with the cruise control lever or buttons causing the cruise control to not engage.

If your cruise control buttons are located on the steering wheel it could also be caused by a bad clock spring, which is located behind the steering wheel.

Check the system with an OBD2 scanner to look for any trouble codes related to the cruise control.

5. Damaged Vacuum Actuator, Hoses or Cable (Older cruise control)

If you drive an older vehicle with cruise control, you might have an issue with the vacuum actuator or the cable that connects to the throttle. If there has been damage done to the vacuum hoses or the actuator, the cruise control will stop working altogether.

Additionally, the cable linking the actuator to the throttle must be in good shape. If it has been broken, the cruise control will fail.

What is Cruise Control?

Cruise control is a feature that is used when you are traveling at a consistent speed. Cruise control was first introduced for automobiles in the 1950s. However, it took many years before it became a staple in the modern vehicle.

This electrical system allows you to set a predetermined speed and take your foot off of the gas pedal. If you are on a long drive, there is less fatigue because you don’t have to try to maintain your speed. Cruise control can also benefit fuel economy because the vehicle uses less fuel when traveling steadily.

In newer cars, you might be able to find adaptive cruise control , which is a smart technology. Adaptive cruise control allows you to travel at a predetermined speed, but it also helps to maintain a safe distance from the vehicles in front of you with the help of sensors. With conventional cruise control, you need to take over when the car in front of you slows down, but that’s not the case with adaptive cruise control.

There are also vehicles nowadays with not only cruise control, but fully self-driving vehicles . We will most likely see much more of this in the future.

Cruise Control Repair Cost

The cost to repair your cruise control system depends on what caused it to fail. If you need to replace a cruise control or brake switch, you might spend between $125 and $350, including parts and labor. However, the cost to change a fuse is only a few dollars and you can perform the replacement yourself in just a matter of seconds.

On the other hand, when something major fails, such as the actuator, you could be looking at a much higher repair bill. In some vehicles, the cost to replace a cruise control actuator can cost more than $700. These costs rise if you drive a luxury vehicle or one that is difficult to get parts for.

It might not seem immediately important for you to fix the broken cruise control, but this defective system can affect other performance aspects. You could start to notice issues with acceleration or have trouble with the speedometer. To play it safe, it’s always best to have the cruise control repaired as soon as you notice a problem.

Is there a fuse for the cruise control?

Yes. If the cruise control is installed from the factory, you should check your car’s owner’s manual for the fuse location. If it’s an aftermarket cruise control, you’ll need to follow the wires to find the fuse.

Does the brake switch affect the cruise control system?

Yes. The brake switch affects the cruise control system. The brake switch sends a signal to the cruise control system to let it know when the brakes are being applied for the engine to know when it should stop accelerating.

Will the cruise control work if the check engine light is on?

The cruise control function will be disabled when the check engine light is on in most car models, even if the cause of the check engine light is not the cruise control itself. This is mainly due to safety reasons.

Can a vacuum leak affect cruise control?

Older vehicles use vacuum to control the throttle for the cruise control, and in this case a vacuum leak can heavily affect the cruise control. However, modern cruise controls are fully electric and in most cases will not be affected by a vacuum leak if the check engine light is not illuminated.

Although many people may think that the cruise control system is unimportant and not worth spending money to repair, the problem can be caused by a faulty part that will affect the engine’s performance or durability. Therefore, it is best not to ignore the problem if your cruise control is not working without first diagnosing the car properly.

If your cruise control still isn’t working after trying all the tips in this article, it’s probably time to take it in for a professional opinion from a mechanic. It may be a more serious problem that requires replacement parts or repairs. In the meantime, drive safe and enjoy the open road!

I have a 2007 Mack granite ctp713 that has and occasional issue with the jake brake and cruise control switches. They quit working at the same time whenever it happens but they will quit working anywhere from a few minutes to days at a time. When they’re on they both function properly. Cruise it’s my issue. I rarely use it but I need my jakes. Any ideas or opinions?

A malfunctioning clutch pedal switch can take out the cruise and engine brake . If the VECU thinks the clutch pedal is depressed, cruise and engine brake won’t work

But the lights for both switches go out when this happens as well. When you press the clutch the lights on the don’t go out when they are working properly. When you turn cruise on there’s a backlight inside the switch. Same for the jake. Whenever it malfunctions the backlights don’t even come on.

Cruise control, high idle and Jakes - What your DDEC III or DDEC IV requires before it activates these functions.

Almost all DDEC III and DDEC IV ECMs have the hardware to support high idle, cruise control, and engine brake (Jake) functions and most DDEC III and DDEC IV ecms set up for highway applications already have these functions programmed in. If your DDEC isn’t activating one or more of these functions the below tables might be helpful. Engine protection systems such as high coolant, oil, or intake manifold temperature, and low coolant level and low oil pressure can disable these three functions depending on how you have your engine protection settings programmed.

The Jakes can come on just under the RPM limiter and stay on all the way down to 851 rpm.

The minimum activation mph can be programmed to 0 and there is no limit on the maximum vehicle speed

Cruise control.

Cruise usually becomes available at 20 mph and 1000 rpm and cuts off at 85 mph and 2110 rpm but I’ve programmed it to come on as low as 10 mph and 600 rpm and as high as 125 mph and 2800 rpm.

High idle will only activate below 3 mph.

cruise control and jake brake quit working

I'm guessing that you have an electronic engine, for the year 2000. There is a good chance, for its brake pedal ECM signal, it might just be using a simple air pressure switch, set at 3-5 psi that triggers an " Closed" circuit   "Open Circuit"   (with brake pedal depressed ) = that tells the ECM, on the engine, that the brake pedal is depressed.

It may not have anything to do with 12 volts DC ,at all.

It might just be " closing a circuit ". "opening a circuit"

Hopefully, Bern will read this thread, and add more info.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Edit : I am a little unsure , if this is the correct electrical engine schematic, for your engine. I do know it is for a CAT engine, that has a 70 pin design, ECM on it.{found photo of a schematic, on a PTO installation blog}

Notice what it shows for the brake pedal = closed circuit means brake pedal released. ( So, I assume, you must have a sensor, that is open, or broken wire, or some air pressure is telling OEM sensor to "open up" = thus it is "telling" ECM that the brake pedal is depressed )

The CAT ECM must be programmed to "Latch Mode" for jake operation when cruise control switch is in the "ON" position.

A: This is why the cruise doesn't work = thinks brake pedal is constantly being pushed down (depressed )

B: This is why the jakes are being constantly activated, too = thinks brake pedal is being pushed down (depressed ) {When cruise SWITCH is ON}

He seems to be on the right track, in thinking it is a "brake" issue, that cause both problems.

is the clutch switch outside of the cab because on petes the pedal goes through the floor.

cruise control and jake brake quit working

Reading through this old post, hoping I might find some relevant info to my problem, or someone subscribed to it might have more info. 97 Freighliner with the series 60. Jake brakes are working very intermittently. Usually all jakes work when the truck is first started but after driving for a few minutes, none will work. Then randomly 4 will work for a while, and the next time they might all work for a while. Seemed to work better in the cold weather, after not working at all for most of the fall, lately they were working all the time, then the temperature theory fell apart this week during really cold weather, I lost them again, or only had 2 or 4. Cruise works fine while even when the brakes are not. Although it will occasionally kick off for no reason. I have check engine light intermittently, but haven't had codes checked for a long time. Accelerator pedal only has the potentiometer, no separate jake switch, and pedal travel is not restricted, clutch and brake switches don't seem to be the issue either. The only reliable way to have them work lately, is to drive through town with the switches on, guaranteed, they will decide to work at least once...

You can flash the codes yourself. Turn key on and hold engine shutdown override switch. The stop engine light will start flashing. If there is no active codes it will flash 25. It will go flash-flash pause then flash-flash-flash-flash-flash. That is code 25. Then the check engine light will flash all the stored codes. Same flash counting procedure. Google Detroit engine flash codes it will give you the whole list.

Had the same problem on 97 Pete. Detroit told me it was the wiring harness so I got a new one. Popped off the valve cover and all the jake connections were loose, tightened them up has been working fine since.

Check engine light may prevent operation.

2006 Volvo 630 Jake Brake & Cruise Control Inoperative

By TexasDually October 21, 2015 in HDT

Texasdually.

I have the Volvo 12.1 with a 10 speed. My Jake brake is the single position, either on or off. All of a sudden my Jake brake, and my cruise control stopped working. I almost think it may be a fuse, but when looking at the fuse panel, there is nothing labeled as cruise, or Jake or engine brake. I looked through the resource guide, and there isn't anything there about it that I could find.

It could very well be a coincident that both failed at nearly the same time. I hadn't used the cruise in a while, since most of my driving had been local until coming to the Rally. The Jake brake was working one day, and the next time out it didn't work anymore.

Anyone else have a problem like this?

Not sure how to word this but here I go..........

Recently I needed to disable the power to the cruise control on our Freightshaker with a M11. and even with the power removed from the cruise circuit the jake would function normally HOWEVER .......IF I flipped the cruise switch to the ON position with the cruise circuit power off then the Jake would NOT function......However IF I turned the non-powered cruise switch to the OFF position and the jake was still ON then the jake worked normal whenever I took my foot off the throttle.............

In other words it appears that the jake on our truck has to have power to the cruise circuit IF the cruise switch is ON or else the jake will not receive power to function if indeed the cruise circuit has failed power-off.........

Not sure your Volvo has this "feature".........

I have been told that the theory is that the feature of the jake is off with the cruise is in the on position is to diable the jake from unexpectedly deploying if the cruise is failed power in the switch on position.................

Heck when I read the above...........it's hard for me to explain what I intended to say.........about as clear as mud, huh??

Might better to say that on the Freightshaker the jake works best when power is supplied to the cruise circuit no matter what position the cruise switch is in..........

I would imagine that if you were get your cruise control operational that the jake might just "heal" it's self..........

Drive on..............(Cruise and jake are nice........)

Found out if you don't use your brakes after starting and pulling out the cruise will not engage until after you push on the brake pedal. Engine brake may have the same issue. The engine brake doesn't come on until the engine is warmed up too. It can take a couple miles before it will engage on my 2001.

Like you, I have a 2006 Volvo w/D12, and had a few issues with the cruise until I got "educated". Don't remember if it affected the Jake or not though. Issue #1, was sometimes after a stop the cruise would not re-engage, RickW came to my rescue and informed me, while up to speed, tap the brake 3 times, then hit the set button. It works, but don't have to do that very often. Issue #2, was once while cleaning the inside of the truck, I must have somehow tweaked the brake light switch, and the cruise would not work at all until I bent that little wire back in place. I can't remember now if it was bent enough to turn the brake lights on or not, but I'm sure it would of had to. Again, can't remember if it effected the Jake or not either. Good luck. Dick T

Most likely an issue with the clutch pedal switch or brake pedal switch. Make sure the treadle valve isn't hanging up slightly.

I have a 2004 630 with a freedomline tranny. The time my cruise would not engage the brake pedal needed to be adjusted. Until I could get that done I put a baby bungy cord on the pedal to hold it up far enough and the cruise worked fine. No clue on the engine brake.

A noisy throttle position sensor will also prevent Jake and Cruise control from working. I cleaned mine and it worked for awhile but got noisy again. I replaced it quite a few years ago and it has not failed since.

WOW... I have a lot of different items to check. Looks to be mainly clutch and brake position sensors and switches. Ok I am going to take each suggestion and go down the list until i find the right answer and fix my gremlins. Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

Looks like it is the clutch switch. I went to an off road event this weekend. While traveling to the event I pulled up on the clutch pedal with my foot and then the Jake worked. But it isn't a fix. More or less just diagnosed it this way. I have a Gen 2 Volvo, I looked up underneath, but nothing looks like it is a switch. Anyone have any info as to what it looks like, or where it is located?

Thanks Scott

IIFC it's a micorswitch with a long spring type actuator that just contacts the clutch pedal. Not very elegant way of doing things but it works.

Here's the new part number for the brake pedal micro switch 82274560 I paid $15.17. You also need the new style bracket. You might also need a small screw and nut to mount the new style switch to the new bracket. The switch comes with a coiled lever that looks like a spring and that's what actuated the micro switch. IIRC the clutch uses the same switch and bracket assy. You may also need to remove the kick panel to get to the switches.

If you lift up on the pedal and it works, it may be the clutch pedal return spring, they break quite often. If the clutch is adjusted properly you should have about 1 1/2" of free play at the top, if you have to pull up on the pedal to get the free play then the spring is broke. Look up under the dash it will be attached to the clutch lever arm.

Thanks for the info. I have an idea what I am searching for now.

Until you find the permanent solution the baby bungee on the pedal works well and keeps the cruise working for you. I used it for 2 months until I got back to the shop I wanted to use.

is that part number for the Volvo motor or the Cummins ISX?? there are times where the part numbers are different and things in the cab are definately wired

different with the Volvo Motor.

I have a 2005 w900 with a c15, my jake works when it is cold outside, when it starts warming up around 45 degrees it will work intermittently, if I sit with the heat running it will not work till I start driving to get cold air flowing, above 60 not working at all along with the cruise. Cat and Kenworth can not find the problem. I have had the motor rebuilt, the jakes rebuilt, new breaker, new clutch switch, and I have power to the on off switch. Does anyone have any ideas, I an starting to lose my mind. Thank you.

That is a weird one do you have a pro link or scan tool to check and see if the ecm is reading your clutch switch is on or off. I would check it when it is cold and when hot. I know you put a new switch in but that would also eliminate any wiring issue in the clutch switch system.

Sounds like wiring or switch caused by resistance. Heat causes resistance. Could be a bad ground.
I noticed with my air on it doesn't fail as much. Is there a solenoid in the dash anywhere the all the wires go to before the fuse box.

From my experience with my truck, when my Cruise and Jake started working sporadically I traced it to the Accelerator Pedal Switch and Pedal. I installed a new one and it works perfect. The Accelerator Pedal was worn out had play in it and was not giving the ECM the right Pedal Position signal, in turn the Jake and Cruise Control functions were affected.
