You may expect to see various species of dolphins and porpoises, eagles, and offshore sea birds including puffins and northern gannets. Taking a trip with Sea of Whales Adventures is more than just watching whales, it is also contributing to a scientific study.   Our trips give us the opportunity to photograph several species of whales and these photographs allow us to try to identify individual whales and give us an idea of how many whales and which individuals pass through our study area every year – you may be surprised at the long sighting history of some of these animals.

Natural Wonders

Sea of Whales Adventures is based out of the picturesque village of Trinity, Trinity Bay. This tiny, but vibrant, community is full of history, beauty, and character and has been inviting visitors to its shores for more than 400 years. Trinity is situated on the Bonavista Peninsula, an area like none other! There are few places in Newfoundland that offer our visitors the number and variety of different experiences that our peninsula does.

Every summer, the bays, inlets, and coves of our area are full of living things to encounter. Because of the geology of the area, a small fish called capelin are able to come here to lay their eggs on the beaches. These fish drive the entire ecosystem and are why the whales visit our waters in such great numbers. These fish are also why our area is the host to many nesting colonies for birds such as puffins, gannets, guillemots, murres, terns, as well as has an abundance of the majestic bald eagle.

But it’s not just whale watching that brings people to our area! In July of 2020, the Bonavista Peninsula received designation as a UNESCO World Geopark. On a Sea of Whales Adventure, you will have the view of some of the most interesting and unique geological features of our area from the comfort of our boat. We would love to experience puffins, whales, and icebergs on every tour but please remember that nature keeps its own schedule. The time of day generally doesn’t affect sightings but time of the season sure does. Iceberg encounters vary the most as each & every year numbers and locations vary.

Seasonal guidance regarding suggested “Best Times” represents historical norms but can vary from year to year. 

Whales & / icebergs cannot be guaranteed on any specific cruise. Please fell free to contact our staff for updates.

Puffins arrive early May and can be viewed in large numbers through till mid September with a few staying till the 3rd week of September. Timing for the other seabirds (murres, guillemots, gannets, kittiwakes, fulmars & more) varies by species.

Whale encounters typically peak mid-June through to mid-August (may vary slightly year to year). Whales may arrive mid May and stay as late as September but please remember that sightings outside of the peak season are a bonus! Whales are not guaranteed.

Iceberg season around the St. John’s area typically runs May through to mid / late June. Although we are at the end of Iceberg Alley and see fewer bergs than northern Newfoundland, the bergs here are often very dramatic as they near the end of their journey.

Authentic & Exciting Whale Watching Tours

I booked a tour with Bob and enjoyed it so much, I came back the next morning to do it again. Bob took us out on the water and the whales showed up. He stopped the zodiac with some distance to the whales and let them come, and they did. It was like being on the water with a whale whisperer... Oh and we also saw bald eagles, puffins, the caves and tons of other great stuff. Thank you so much for the experience!

We floated quietly as pods of Humpback whales including Mothers and Calves surrounded us as they fed on the Capelin. We saw breaching and fins! This was our second iceberg tour of our NL trip and was definitely the most spectacular.....we saw 2 amazing icebergs, some rugged coastline rocks and caves, plenty of bird life, including a pair of bald eagles and hundreds of black guillemots and to top it off was Bob, our Zodiac captain. My husband and I went our on the zodiac while in Bonavista...it was the experience of a life time...we sawn lots of whales, the scenery is fantastic,, even if we hadn't seen whales the scenery was well worth the trip..We enjoyed it so much we went out the next day with My husband cousin and her husband and even though they grew up in the area they enjoyed it as much as we did...If you are going to . be in this area I highly recommend a whale watching trip on the zodiac.

Wondering where to go whale watching in Newfoundland? Let me help you! I grew up in Newfoundland, and whale watching is one of my favorite things to do. I’m since been whale watching all over the world, but nothing compares to seeing whales in Newfoundland.

The world’s largest population of humpback whales come to feed off the coast of Newfoundland every summer, and they put on quite the show.

You can easily spot whales while hiking along the coast during the summer. However, if you want a closer experience, there are many whale-watching tours in Newfoundland to take you out to meet these friendly giants. On these tours, it is also common to see large colonies of puffins.

Whales are magical creatures. Despite growing up with them just outside my house, I still jump with excitement whenever I see one.

I’ve seen whales and puffins in Newfoundland more times than I can count, and I am rounding up my favorite places to spot them in this guide.

Where to see whales in Newfoundland

Whale watching st. john’s newfoundland.

The capital of Newfoundland, St. John’s , is a city surrounded by the ocean that offers some of the best whale watching in Newfoundland. During the summer, you can easily spot whales from many of the coastal hiking trails.

The best way to do this is by hiking a portion of the East Coast Trail , a 336-km hiking trail that goes along the Avalon. The trail is broken into 26 paths, most of which I’ve hiked.

If you want to get closer to whales, you can join a whale-watching tour from downtown St. John’s with Iceberg Quest.

This boat tour departs from the heart of downtown St. John’s, making it easier than ever. You’ll head out from the harbor, getting a view of the city from the water.

You’ll sail through iconic landmarks such as Signal Hill, Fort Amherst, Blackhead sea caves, and Cape Spear lighthouse – one of the best places for whale watching in St. John’s.

Bay Bulls Whale Watching

One of the best places to see whales in Newfoundland best places is Bay Bulls on the Irish Loop, around the Witless Bay Ecological Reserve.

This area has whales and several bird species, including puffins, common murres, black guillemots, northern gannets, greater shearwaters, and northern fulmars. I did a whale-watching tour here a few years ago and loved it. The puffin colony is amazing!

You’ll have to hop on a  boat tour  from Bay Bulls to visit the island.

The tour takes place on a catamaran equipped with a spacious viewing platform that can accommodate up to 100 people on its outside deck.

Your captain navigates the boat to the Witless Bay Ecological Reserve while the onboard crew and naturalists share insight into the 2.5 million seabirds and the large populations of whales that call the reserve home.

The boat will stop along sheltered areas of the islands that comprise the reserve, where you can watch seabirds in their natural habitat. Some species you may see include atlantic puffins, common murres, black guillemots, northern gannets, greater shearwaters, and northern fulmars.

This is an easy day trip from St. John’s, as it’s just a 25-minute drive from the city. The tour takes about an hour and a half.

St. Vincent’s is another popular spot for whale watching from the shore on the Irish Loop . It’s about two hours from St. John’s. The sea quickly becomes deep, so the whales often come very close to shore!

Trinity Whale Watching

Trinity Bay is a gorgeous town about three hours from St. John’s that is popular for whale watching. I went hiking around the Skerwink trail and saw whales from the trailhead.

If you want to get closer, you can join a tour with Trinity Eco-Tours on one of their zodiac boats. I did this tour in May but for a different purpose.

The spring isn’t a great time to see wildlife, but it is for icebergs. Every spring, huge icebergs make their way down the coast from Greenland to what is known as Iceberg Alley in Newfoundland. Trinity is one of the best places to see them.

Aside from the whales and icebergs, a boat tour in Trinity is great because you will see the beautiful coastline around Trinity Harbor.

The tour takes you to a sea cave, waterfalls, the random passage movie site, and some other small communities near Trinity, including where my cabin is!

During a tour in May, we saw a Minke whale. Bald eagle sightings are also common.

If you time it right, you may see icebergs, whales, and birds here on the same tour, which is the ultimate trifecta.

Whale watching in Bonavista

Bonavista Bay is one of the best places to see whales in Newfoundland. I haven’t done a boat tour here, but I have seen whales from the beach, as well as puffins. There is a boat tour operator here that can bring you to a closer encounter.

Tip: Head to Ellison to look for puffins! There is a huge puffin colony here that may come up close to say hello.

While visiting Central Newfoundland , I went on a boat tour with Hare Bay Adventures in Northern Bonavista Bay.

I was booked to do a traditional wooden boat rowing lesson, but the day before, the owner called to ask us if we wanted to go whale watching instead, as he said he believed he had the best whale watching on the island. So, of course, I said yes.

The boat left Hare Bay and went through some of the resettled communities, which were beautiful to see.

As we entered the open water, we started to see spouts in the water from a distance and made our way closer to the whales. I couldn’t believe it as we got closer – they were on all sides of the boat.

I couldn’t even keep up with how many whales there were! We mostly saw humpback whales and a couple of minkes.

Not to mention all the unique birds we saw! We went past a small island on which hundreds of Northern Gannets were sitting.

When I turned around, there must have been thousands of birds flying over my head; it was so cool to witness. It felt like an episode of planet earth! We also saw puffins diving for fish in the water here.

After the four-hour whale-watching tour, we headed to Braggs island for a campfire dinner, one of the resettled islands. Such a nice way to end a fantastic day!

Twillingate whale watching

Twillingate and Fogo Island are two other places where you can often see whales in the summer. I did a boat tour in Twillingate in July with Twillingate Adventures , but unfortunately, the Capelin hadn’t come to shore yet, so we didn’t see any whales.

However, even without the whales, a boat tour here is an excellent activity as the landscapes are stunning. We did see several birds, including bald eagles and osprey. Twillingate and Fogo are also the best places to see icebergs in the spring!

King’s Point

King’s Point is another great place in Central Newfoundland to see whales. They even have a whale pavilion where you can see the world’s largest reconstruction of a humpback whale!

Check out By the Sea Inn and Cafe for a great meal by the sea – it’s also a lovely place to stay the night.

Whale watching Gros Morne

While stunning, the West Coast of Newfoundland isn’t the best place to see whales in Newfoundland compared to the East. That said, you can see them.

If you’re in Gros Morne National Park , you can take a scenic boat tour of Bonne Bay with Bontours , where you can see whales as well as fjords, bald eagles, moose, and seabirds. The park is a photographer’s paradise!

St. Anthony whale watching

Head to St. Anthony on the northern tip of Newfoundland to witness one of nature’s most incredible spectacles—the annual migration of icebergs and whales. This remote and rugged region is frequented by large populations of humpback whales, fin whales, and minke whales.

Northland Discovery Boat Tours runs zodiac tours around the St. Anthony Coast. Explore the pristine waters of Iceberg Alley, where you may see whales frolicking amidst colossal ice formations.

Best time for whale watching in Newfoundland

The best time to see whales in Newfoundland is from mid-May to September, with the peak Newfoundland whale-watching season from mid-July to mid-August.

This is when the Capelin start rolling into the shores, which attracts huge pods of humpback whales who come to feed near the shores.

You can see whales outside these months; your changes are just much higher during the summer months as many migrate here to feed.

Types of whale species in Newfoundland

There are over 22 different species of whales in Newfoundland.

The most common type of whales in Newfoundland are humpback whales, who migrate here in large groups every summer, searching for Capelin and other feed.

Other common whale species are minke whales, although these are much harder to see because they are solitary and not nearly as aerobatic as the humpbacks. I have seen them before, but it’s usually just a quick glimpse before they go back underwater.

Other species of whales in Newfoundland include fin whales, sperm whales, belugas, dolphins, porpoises, killer whales, and blue whales, which are the largest species.

What to bring whale watching in Newfoundland

Newfoundland weather is crazy, especially when you’re out on the open ocean. Even if it’s a nice sunny day, you’ll want to bring warm layers with you as the wind can be very chilly on the boat.

A windbreaker/rain jacket is a good choice. If you’re going to wear a hat, get a toque; otherwise, it might blow away.

If you’re prone to seasickness, I recommend using a  motion sickness patch , as the ocean in Newfoundland can be rough.

You’ll want to bring a camera to capture these majestic beings. For capturing wildlife, zoom lens are key. I use a Sony A7II with a 24-240mm lens which allows me to get up close shots like this even when the whales are far in the distance.

Don’t worry if you don’t have a big lens; the whales come close to the boat during the tours, and you can still capture amazing photos and videos with your phone. It would be best if you had a zoom lens for puffins unless you get lucky and have them come up close to you.

Hampden,on the west coast of newfoundland is the best imo…where else can you stand on a wharf and see them that close-up(less than 5 feet at times) and sometimes feeding by trapping fish against the wharf then coming up under them for a gigantic mouthfull…Not wellknown because it’s not marketed nor offered up as a sightseeing attraction because the town managers have never taken interest in tourism… Hampden also see the biggest and prettiest icebergs in Newfoundland and can also be admired at close-up viewing…Cheers!!

Atlantic Puffins

Atlantic Puffins are small, colourful seabirds with webbed feet. They live exclusively on the edges of the Atlantic Ocean, inhabiting tiny islands. Puffins swim on the surface of the ocean, and feed on small fish by diving underwater.

Our boat tour travels to the largest Atlantic Puffin colony in North America. With the seabirds fluttering all around the boat, it’s a sight to see.

The Puffin Patrol

Our crew is an important part of the Puffin Patrol , a group of volunteers devoted to rescuing puffins, and safely releasing them back into the Atlantic Ocean.

Members of the Witless Bay Puffin and Petrel Patrol monitor the roads at night to capture all lost chicks and keep them safe until the next morning. They are measured, weighed, banded, and released for a better second start of their new life.

Molly Bawn crew members are proud puffin patrollers every night, and also assist with releasing them out to the open sea. Often there are too many predatory gulls near the beach, formerly used for a land-based release. When this is the case, we dedicate the first run of the day to give the little puffins a lift far enough out of the reach of these gulls before they are released, to give them a better chance to grow up and come back to the islands after 5 years.

• The path is 0.8 kilometers long and takes about 30 to 40 minutes.

• Open sea kayaking providers in the vicinity will take visitors as near as practically possible to whales, caverns, and coves, and if the moment is good, icebergs.
• All of the harbors along the shore are home to whales.
• Visitors can view whales while trekking or strolling through coastal treks, rocky outcrops, and pristine beaches if they haven't developed their sea legs.
• The tails of humpback whales plunging in the sea may be seen from a cliff-side top.
• Alternatively, have a meal by the sea and enjoy a clear picture of whales and dolphins playing close.
• Telescopes are not required.

You never know where you’ll see them next. Often a giant iceberg waits around the corner in a cove or bay when you least expect it. Twillingate offers a choice of iceberg and whale watching  boat tours  that will take you closer to these awesome structures.

Known as the Iceberg Capital of the World, Twillingate is one of Newfoundland’s best locations for admiring these giants of nature that break off the ice cap in Baffin Island, Greenland.

All the Way from Greenland

Despite their size, icebergs move an average of 17 kilometers (about 10 miles) a day. These icebergs originate from the glaciers of western Greenland and may have an interior temperature of -15 to -20°C. Icebergs are usually confined to move close to the coast by winds and currents. On a foggy April night in 1912 it was one of these icebergs that sank the Titanic.

Try a piece of iceberg or “bergy bit” in your glass. These icebergs are ancient structures of pure glacier water and when a bergy bit melts in a glass filled with a beverage, it makes a fizzing sound, called “bergy seltzer”. This sound is created when compressed air bubbles trapped in the iceberg escape. The bubbles come from air trapped in snow layers that later become glacial ice.

Iceberg Wine & Beer

Bergy bits can often be collected on the pebbled beaches where they wash ashore. You may want to try to local berry wines at Auk Island Winery, made with pure iceberg water. And at Captain’s Pub you’ll have the chance to taste draught beer made with iceberg water (Quidi Vidi Iceberg beer)

Witnessing one of these giant icebergs calve (break up) is a breathtaking experience. Remember to bring your camera and zoom lenses.

Whale Watching

Every year from mid May to September a variety of whales swim through the rich feeding waters along the coast of Newfoundland. The highlight of whale watching is seeing a whale tale above the surface.

As many as 22 species of whales have been recorded in the waters around Newfoundland, such as humpbacks, fin whales, sperm whales, blue whales, minke whales, pilot whales and potheads. When going out by boat, keep your camera ready because you may see even dolphins, seals and a variety of sea birds.

Humpback and Minke Whales

Humpbacks and minke whales are the most common whale species but dolphins and fin whales are also occasionally seen. Humpback tails are as distinctive as human faces or fingerprints.

The lookout point at Twillingate’s Long Point Lighthouse is a good spot for whale watching, but a surprise may await anywhere along the coastline. Twillingate’s many tour operators have daily tours to bring you close to whales, icebergs and other marine life.

The coves and islands in Notre Dame Bay create the perfect conditions for sea kayaking – another perfect way to get close (not too close) to these sea mammals!

Twillingate is also the home of North America’s largest population of humpbacks, seabirds and yet both the sea and shores remain pristine and enchanting.
