Discover Austin on an Electric Scooter

Culture Trip scooters spotted during the week leading up to SxSW 2019 in Austin, Texas, USA.

For the past several years, several enterprising individuals in Austin have been experimenting with alternative forms of transport, including electric scooters and bikes. Now it’s easier than ever to zip from one spot to the next without having to endure the constant congestion on Austin’s roadways.

Scooter travel and biking in Austin just got an upgrade with OJO ride-share scooters (first ride free with code OJOAUSTIN ) and Austin B-cyle . With parking no longer a concern, visiting some of the coolest stops in Austin just got a whole lot more comfortable.

1. Start at the Austin Motel

scooter tour austin

Even if you don’t stay in the Austin Motel , chances are you will walk away from your trip in Austin remembering its famous neon sign and marquee. The motel, built in the 1930s, sits prominently at the beginning of the South Congress neighborhood. It’s a cozy spot that emanates quintessential Austin weird. The artistically designed interior and rooms pop with color, and the pool area provides an opportunity to relax and catch some sun. Only a short scooter ride from downtown, the motel is located near restaurants and shops.

2. Visit the Austin Convention Center

The Austin Convention Center during South by Southwest (SXSW), 2010

3. Hear live music at the Empire Control Room and Garage

Music Venue

Located at the intersection where East Austin meets West Austin, the Empire Control Room & Garage is an indoor-outdoor venue whose three stages often feature some of the best music acts to visit Austin. From hip-hop to funk to synth electro-pop, the performances here are eclectic and embody the city’s values of inclusivity and “Keep Austin weird.”

6. Shop at Lucy in Disguise With Diamonds

7. Taco it up at Veracruz All Natural Food Truck

Food Truck, Mexican

After you’ve scooted all around town, you might need a quick bite to eat before you get ready for after-hours fun. Opened by the Veracruz-born Vasquez sisters in 2010, Veracruz All Natural Food Truck creates tacos that have established the vendor as a premier taco trailer in the city. The Food Network even recognized them for serving one of the five best tacos in America – a well-deserved accolade. If you’re looking for something really authentic, try the Al Pastor or the Chicken Mole. If you’re still at a loose end after all that scooting, there are tons of great things to do in Austin .

8. Stroll along Waller Creek

Hiking Trail

A small section of Waller Creek in Austin, Texas, USA.

When the hustle and bustle of city streets becomes too much, sometimes the solution is a walk in the park. On the eastern edge of downtown flows Waller Creek, along which you can stroll from the University of Texas campus all the way to Lady Bird Lake. With many entrance points along the way, this creek path makes for a beautiful and safe walk to many of the must-see downtown destinations. However, as it is not a scooter-friendly path, the best way to access it is to park your scooter along the edge of Waterloo Park. From there it is a five- to 10-minute walk to the center of SXSW. Plus, with your scooter tucked out of the way, you won’t have to worry about navigating one-way streets as you look for a parking slot.

Touring downtown austin on scooters – 10 steps to success.

scooter tour austin

There are so many ways to get around Austin, but if you want to try touring downtown on scooters, here are 10 steps to making sure your first time is a big success.

One – eat a good breakfast, here’s how we decided to go:, brenda emails lifegroup: hey, anyone want to get breakfast and try scooters on saturday morning, lifegroup replies: one couple is available (and game). the others were big fat saturday morning chickens (or already had plans), sherry and bryan love a good adventure. they’re like us – transplanted emptynesters living downtown, not tending to a yard every weekend, saying “why not” to lots of new experiences – like taco shack and scooters.

Touring Downtown Austin on Scooters

Two – Download the App

Several scooter companies have a presence in austin; however, of the most visible brands, lime-s is by far my favorite . feel free to try others, though, and let me know what you think about them., here are a few reasons why i prefer lime-s:, the scooters themselves are more substantial in their structure., the handlebars are higher., there’s a little bell on the handlebar that you can ring when passing pedestrians., the traveling speed is given on a digital readout screen in the middle of the handlebars., the platform where you stand is slightly wider., there’s a red light just above the back wheel that stays on when you’re riding., the brakes are good., the scooter has a kickstand., the app is easy to use., green is my favorite color, three – scan to ride, once you’ve downloaded the app and entered your payment information, start hunting down a scooter. the map shows where they’re located. unless you’re riding at peak times (rush hour, saturday night), there will be plenty of available lime-s scooters. here are a few steps in the process:, the app will ask you for permission to access your phone’s camera., when you’ve located a scooter, press the scan to ride button on the app., hold your phone over the bar code on the scooter’s handlebars., the app will respond with a tone and it will complete the rental for you., prepare for takeoff.

Touring Downtown Austin on Scooters

Four – Ask a Passerby to Take Your Photo

Most people who are walking around downtown are tourists, but even if they’re locals, no one minds being asked to take a photo. so, don’t feel like you can’t ask. everyone’s enjoying the experience.

Touring Downtown Austin on Scooters

Five – Designate a Leader

There’s a lot to watch for on a good scooter ride in downtown austin; i.e., people on bikes, people on foot, cars, buses, dogs, and more it helps to have a leader who will clear your crossings and alert his followers to any danger ahead; i.e., cracks in the sidewalk., in this video, bryan assures us that he sees no signs ahead which would bar us from toodling around the capitol building., good to know, bryan. nobody in this group wants to have to call the kids for a bailout.

Six – Get Your Bearings

Bryan got his bearings quick, and so did sherry all it takes to start the scooter is three scoots with one foot while the other keeps the balance point. then stand with both feet on the platform and away you go i noticed that sherry felt a little more in control when she allowed her left foot to hang ever so slightly off the edge of the platform., the scooters will actually go 20 mph (yikes), but it’s so much safer to keep your speed down to about 7 mph. that’s probably about as fast as these two were going in this video., additional tips:, if you scooter down the sidewalks, don’t ride too close to the building. people come out of the doors, and it’s all kinds of scary when you’re the one walking out to the sight of a scooter about to run right over you., slow down and watch carefully when you’re coming up to an alley entrance or parking garage exit. the cars aren’t expecting a whizzing scooter to approach from their periphery. that’s the dangerous part..

Seven – Enjoy the Grounds of the Texas Capitol

Our leader zigged and zagged us around the sidewalks that weave to and fro around the capitol building’s beautiful grounds. here’s a complete list of all the beautiful monuments you can see if you decide to tour the grounds yourself. they’re all quite inspiring..

scooter tour austin

Eight – Explore!

From the capitol building, we zipped over to the governor’s mansion, then took the long way down to guadalupe street for a visit to the sfc farmers’ market ..

scooter tour austin

Nine – Find a Mural

You don’t have to look hard to find fun murals around downtown austin. in fact, if you have any trouble at all deciding on a scooter-itinerary, how about seeing just how many you can locate what a great idea for a photo collage or christmas card. this is one we found in a  parking garage.

scooter tour austin

Ten – Make Sure You Have Plenty of Photos

The kids are going to want to see it. or not. if they’re like ours, they’ll be about half scared that you did something so wild and risky without letting them know ahead of time. have you noticed that, fellow over fiftyers our kids want to know where we were when we are out late, too. pshaw. silly kids..

scooter tour austin

Have I inspired you?

Let me know if you have any questions, and please share your pictures with me when you go. i’d love to see what fun things you find as you toodle around downtown austin on a lime-s scooter.

Electric city: 10 things to know about e-bike and e-scooter rentals in Austin

Austin has 10,250 permitted electric scooters, like these grouped together on Congress Avenue, within its city limits, but only 6,000 (1,500 per provider) are allowed to be deployed downtown.

From zooming down South Congress Avenue to grab a drink downtown to pedaling across Barton Springs Road for an evening trip to Zilker Park, many in Austin over the past six years have fully embraced two-wheeled electric rentals as part of the city's transportation infrastructure that's here to stay.

In early 2018, e-bikes and e-scooter rentals began popping up in Austin , and the city was home to about 2,000 of them by the summer of that year. As of Friday, the city had about 11,000 permitted rentals.

Here's what we've learned about e-bike and e-scooter rentals at the start of 2023:

1. How many e-bikes are available for rent in Austin?

Lime is authorized to deploy up to 500 dockless e-bikes in the city. As of July 2022, MetroBike had at least 347 e-bikes in its fleet, and it is working to convert its 850-plus nonelectric bicycles into a fully electric fleet.

2. How many e-scooters are available for rent in Austin?

Austin has 10,250 permitted scooters within its city limits, but only 6,000 (1,500 per provider) are allowed to be deployed downtown.

Operators may have only 100 e-scooters each on Congress Avenue from Cesar Chavez Street to 11th Street and no more than five scooters per provider on each block between Colorado and Brazos streets.

The total number of scooters out in Austin can vary from day to day, but it typically never hits the max, according to the Austin Transportation Department.

3. Where are the rentals in Austin?

Scooters are mostly downtown, in West Campus and along South Congress Avenue.

The city has an interactive map at public.ridereport.com/austin that breaks down the most popular routes for e-bikes and e-scooters.

4. What's the most popular rental brand in Austin?

The Austin Transportation System said it's hard to accurately list the most popular e-scooter and e-bike brands, but it did say how many each company is permitted to have in the city:

  • Lime — Total permits: 3,500 scooters and 500 e-bikes.
  • Bird — Total permits: 3,000 scooters.
  • Wheels — Total permits: 1,750 sit-down scooters.
  • Link — Total permits: 2,000 scooters.

5. Are rentals back to pre-pandemic levels?

The Austin Transportation Department said e-bike and e-scooter use has been steadily increasing since before the coronavirus pandemic, when the two-wheel rentals were just coming to Austin and at the peak of popularity.

"The dockless mobility industry was still in its initial phase of adoption by the public before the pandemic, so the use doesn’t really depict normal use, as the excitement of the new dockless industry hadn’t leveled out," the city said in a statement. "Post-pandemic, we are seeing longer trips and more active users, rather than just one-time use."

  • From March 2021 through December 2022, about 7.38 million e-bike and e-scooter trips were taken in Austin. The median number of trips per day was 8,654, and the median distance per day was 0.79 mile.
  • During the height of the pandemic, from March 2020 through February 2021, only about 1.6 million e-bike and e-scooter trips were taken. The median number of trips per day was just 3,473, but the median distance per day was also 0.79 mile.
  • Before the pandemic, from January 2019 through February 2020, about 6.13 million e-bike and e-scooter trips were taken. The median number of trips per day was 13,552, while the median distance per day was 0.72 mile.

6. How much money does the city earn from rentals?

The City of Austin collects different fees to authorize providers to advertise their services on public-owned portions of land.

The license application fee is $1,500 a year but is broken up into two six-month renewal cycles. The per device permit fee is $80 a year and is broken into two six-month renewal cycles. There is also a per-trip permitting fee, which is 15 cents for each e-scooter or e-bike and is paid monthly.

7. Are the rentals allowed outside of downtown?

Device rentals are allowed anywhere within city limits, according to the Austin Transportation Department.

Providers can select areas based on needs and often test out new neighborhoods to see if there is a demand for them.

8. How many scooter deaths have we had in recent years?

Authorities last year reported two scooter deaths in Austin, one at Interstate 35 and Ben White Boulevard in South Austin and the other on East Seventh Street downtown.

Four people died while riding scooters in 2021 — two on South Congress Avenue, one on East Seventh Street and the other on East Riverside Drive, according to police records.

9. What are the benefits and downsides of these rentals?

The city said the biggest benefit from having e-bike and e-scooter rentals is that it allows people who need to drive a mile or less to leave their vehicles at home and use a more environmentally friendly option.

"That aligns with the Austin Strategic Mobility Plan’s goal of reducing single-occupant vehicle trips to less than 50% by 2039," the city said in a statement.

E-bikes and e-scooters cluttering sidewalks in Austin is the biggest downside to the transportation option, according to the city.

"The rapid rise in popularity of scooters and dockless e-bikes has resulted in some areas appearing cluttered and challenging to navigate," the city said in a statement. "Policies continue to evolve with a focus on balancing the needs of meeting demand and reducing clutter in the right of way."

Strategies include limiting devices to "within close proximity to Congress Avenue, as well as installing parking corrals. The Austin Transportation Department continues to work collaboratively with providers in our city to develop new solutions and policies to improve conditions for all users."

10. How many e-scooters are fished out of Austin waters?

The Austin Transportation Department has a tally of 311 calls made about e-scooters found in and on the banks of creeks and lakes in Austin:

  • 166 scooters were found in or near Austin's waterways in 2022.
  • 68 scooters were found in 2021.
  • 103 scooters were found in 2020.
  • 42 scooters were found in 2019.
  • Two scooters were found in 2018.

An analysis by the Austin Transportation Department in 2020 found that about 30% of scooters reported in a waterway were found in Lady Bird Lake.

Signed up for this as a way to see Austin and do a good tour. After some patient training we took off. Tyler, our guide, was excellent, and safety was always a priority! We signed up for the food truck tour and were a bit surprised that we didn’t visit more and the one visit was optional. I think there could be more clarity in what the tour is and is not. Overall, we would highly recommend this as an option to see the city!!

We’re Changing the Way the World Thinks About Scooters

The electric scooters industry began with chargers.  Anyone with a phone could download the app and signup to be a charger.  The industry evolved out of necessity to communities of entrepreneurs running several fleets of scooters in each city.  Due to lack of uniformity, safety regulations, and cost efficiency, BIRD is changing the industry once again with Preferred Partners.  Preferred Partners are vetted and approved providers held to a higher standard of operation to provide the safest and highest quality vehicle for the customer each and every ride.  Come see one of our vehicles in action in Austin, TX.

_FML0191-2.jpg

SAFETY FIRST

OUR FOCUS IS THE RIDERS' SAFETY. EACH VEHICLE IS THOROUGHLY INSPECTED BEFORE EACH DEPLOYMENT TO ENSURE THAT EACH VEHICLE IS RIDE READY FOR THE NEXT 50 MILES.  BRAKES, TIRE PRESSURE, HEADLIGHT AND TAILLIGHT, THROTTLE, AS WELL AS THE VEHICLE OVERALL HEALTH IS INSPECTED EACH AND EVERY TIME.  THAT IS OUR COMMITMENT TO OUR COMMUNITY AND OUR RIDERS.

Bird ATX e-scooter

DOUBLE BREAKING SYSTEM

Each scooter deployed in Austin, TX is equipped with both a rear brake and front brake.*  The rear brake is controlled with the left brake assembly and the front brake is controlled with the right brake assembly.

COMMUNITY SUPPORT

$.15 of every ride on a shared mobility device is paid to the City of Austin to help support the community.  The city uses these funds to build bike lanes and sidewalks, improve streets, and much more.  These funds make up millions of dollars each year into the city's budget.  Thank you for helping us make our community a better place for EVERYONE!

CLEAN ENERGY TRANSPORTION

Every ride taken on an electric scooter reduces our carbon foot print.  We are even maximizing this by only purchasing 100% electric vehicles starting in 2022 to collect our fleet of Bird scooters.  We also conduct an energy audit every year to  evaluate and reduce any excess waste.  BIRD is also committed to an excellent recycling program, because sustainability matters.

Bird ATX e-scooter

WHY BIRD ATX

A different approach, using a new method of managing.

Single management operations is more cost efficient, safety and repairs are more streamlined and controlled, and city compliance issues can be managed quickly.  Overall the fleet will perform at a higher rides per deployment rate while overall costing less per deployment.

Where are the best places to ride in and around Austin?

  • Austin to Marble Falls (twisty and scenic)
  • Lime Creek Road (on Lake Travis, great for twisties!)
  • The Twisted Sisters (state roads: 335, 336, 337)
  • Local Ranch Roads ( 1431 , 2222  and 2769 )
  • Muleshoe Bend Recreation Area

Marble Falls

You can find some more tips from locals on places to ride in our article, Austin Area Roads, Routes, and Roadside Stops .

There are some seriously cool shops to check out in Austin—both to outfit yourself and to customize your bike.

Revival Cycles has some of the most amazing custom builds we’ve ever seen. And they have all sorts of great parts and accessories (for you and your bike) that you can easily pack in your bag to take home, or order to have shipped to your door. They also host the Handbuilt Motorcycle Show on MotoGP weekend each year, which is a must-attend for any gearhead or anyone who appreciates the art and detail of fine handcrafted bikes.

Another great Austin motorcycle event to keep in mind when you’re planning your trip is the  Republic of Texas Biker Rally (otherwise known as the ROT Rally); it descends on Austin in June of each year.

The Republic of Texas Biker Rally is one of the largest motorcycle events in the country.

Also, a great stop for any gear or apparel needs is Motorangutan . Whether you need a helmet, a jacket, or some parts to customize your bike at home, they have a huge selection—fun to check it out when you’re in town, or visit their online store to order at home.

If you’re looking for an off-the-beaten-path dive bar with an authentic Texas feel, be sure to check out C. Hunt’s Ice House , an institution in these parts. Sam’s Town Point is another great spot for a drink and live music if you’re looking to make an evening of it. And finally, check out Yellow Jacket’s and Little Darlin’s , two more of our favorite biker-friendly bars. (And we know you’ll be extra responsible if you’re riding to these places!)

Austin Motorcycle Rental: Weather & Riding

Austin weather is generally pretty bike-friendly, in the sense that it lacks the extremes of some other areas. However, it does get very hot and fairly humid in the summer months and can be very cold in winter so make sure you bring appropriate riding gear.

As with many places, fall may be a perfect time, for the most moderate temperatures. Spring is also usually ideal, though there can be occasional thunderstorms and (Texas-sized) hail.

Texas state law is different from many states in that it allows riding without a helmet if you’re over 21, have passed a DPS-approved motorcycle course, and carry over $10,000 in medical insurance (and can show proof of that.)

If you want to ride with a passenger, you can do that only if the bike you’re riding has a designated passenger seat. Including footpegs and handholds.

Lane splitting is illegal in Texas—you must use a separate lane to pass other vehicles and cannot ride between lanes.

One Austin-specific law that’s particularly moto-friendly is free parking—a motorcycle can be parked free of charge at Austin city meters, for up to 12 hours.

Preparing for your Austin Motorcycle Rental Ride

When you’re packing and planning for your trip to Austin, you’ll want to keep in mind the time of year it is—pack your lighter-weight gear for the summer months, and extra layers (and waterproof gear just in case) for the winter.

For fall and spring, you can bring more moderate layers because temps won’t be extreme, but it’s a good idea to bring lightweight rain layers just in case you get caught in Texas showers.

Street art in Austin, TX

And you’ll, of course, want to remember all of your protective gear—helmet, jacket, riding pants, gloves, etc. (Make sure you check out our article on traveling with gear before you leave!) If you’re not traveling with your protective gear, please let us know and we can work with the owner to try and find local options for you. Often, owners are more than happy to lend their gear to fellow riders.

Finally, make sure you check out our Austin Motorcycle Rider's Guide for more local tips!

Live in Austin? Earn Extra Money Renting Out Your Motorcycle

As one of the leading peer-to-peer motorcycle rental marketplaces, Twisted Road makes it easy for owners and riders to connect and negotiate rental terms on a bike with one another.

Plus, all owners earn 70% of profit, which means accruing total earnings of $1,000 will return $700 to your pocket. It's an excellent deal in a world where it's often 50/50 or worse.

Allison Russell already had a fairly full year set out ahead of her, with the opening slot on a Hozier tour that continues in arenas through the end of September. Now she’s announced she will quickly follow that with a headlining tour of theaters, with Kara Jackson as her opener, beginning a month after she gets off the road from the Hozier outing.

Popular on Variety

Spotify and artist pre-sales are underway, with the official on-sale scheduled for Friday. More information on pre-sale availability and VIP packages can be found here .

Russell appears on Hozier’s new EP, singing the song “Wildflower & Barley,” a number they perform together each night on his tour. In kind, he appeared on her “Returner” album, lending harmony to the song “Requiem.”

Russell was just named as a nominee for artist of the year at the Americana Honors & Awards, which take place in Nashville in September. (The singer will not be on hand, as she will be in the middle of a three-night stand with Hozier at L.A.’s Forum at the time.) That nomination comes on the heels of this year’s Grammys, where Russell was nominated for four awards and picked up a win for best American roots performance.

Russell spoke with Variety last year about her acclaimed “Returner” album — read that interview here — and about the “Demons” music video she did with director Ethan Tobman (read here ).
