Have you ever been on a journey? Maybe you’ve been on more than one journey in your life. But what is the plural of journey, is it journies or journeys?

Let’s take a look at the correct plural form for “journey”.

Journies or Journeys?

Journeys is the correct plural form of journey, journies is a common spelling mistake. For words that end with a vowel and a consonant you just need to add “s” at the end to create the plural form. The word “journey” ends with a vowel and a consonant, “ey”. Therefore, we just need to add “s” to the end of “journey” to make it into its plural form, “journeys”. This is why the plural of journey is “journeys” not “journies”.

Note: There is a different rule for pluralizing words that end with the letter “y” after a consonant, such as the word “country”. In this case, we transform the “y” into “ie” and add “s” to make the word plural. So, “country” becomes “countries”.

Definition of journeys

Journeys is plural for journey which means the act of traveling from one place to another. “Journey” can also mean a set of experiences that someone has over a period of time, which changes them in some way. You can therefore go on different types of journeys! In both of these cases, “journey” is used as a noun, but it can also be used as a verb.

Journeys meaning (noun)

A journey is an act or process of traveling from one place to another, especially in a vehicle. It can also be referred to as a trip. “Journey” can also be used to describe a set of experiences someone has over time that affects or changes them in some way. For example, you can go on a spiritual journey to learn more about yourself.

• The backpackers planned to take multiple journeys across the country during their year-long trip.
• As a travel blogger, she documented her journeys to various exotic locations around the world.

As a verb, journeys is the third-person singular present tense form of the verb “journey.” To journey means to travel, often to a faraway place.

Here are some examples of journeys as a verb in a sentence:

• She journeys to the mountains every summer to escape the heat of the city.

As you can probably imagine, because “journey” refers to traveling somewhere it has several synonyms. Here are some synonyms for “journey”, in the noun form:

Wishing someone a safe journey

You would typically wish someone a safe journey when they are about to embark on a trip or travel to a new destination. It is a way of saying goodbye, expressing good wishes, and hoping that the person has a safe and pleasant journey, free from harm or trouble. It is often accompanied by other well-wishes such as “Have a great trip” or “Travel safely”. You may also hear people use “ safe travels “. However, we don’t use “safe journeys” in this context, it is always “safe journey”.

Remember, if you want to pluralize the word “journey” we add an “s” at the end to make it “journeys”. It does not become “journies” . This is because “journey” ends with a vowel and a consonant, “ey”. In such cases, we just need to add an “s” at the end of the word to make it plural.

Why I Love the Hero's Journey (And You Will, Too)

Like many, I grew up loving Star Wars. I especially loved the music and bought the soundtracks at some point in middle school. When my parents weren't home and I had the house all to myself, I'd slip one of the CDs into my stereo, crank the volume up, and blast the London Symphony Orchestra. I even pretended I was conducting the violins and timpani myself.

I know it's nerdy to admit. But we love what we love, and I love the music of great movies.

In a way, the Hero's Journey is like a soundtrack. It follows familiar beats and obeys age-old principles of human emotion. We can't necessarily explain why a piece of music is so beautiful, but we can explain what it does and simply acknowledge that most people like it.

As I've come to understand Joseph Campbell's groundbreaking monomyth theory, commonly known as the Hero's Journey, I've fallen deeper and deeper in love with it.

But it's important to make sure you know what it is, and what it isn't.

The Hero's Journey isn't a formula to simply follow, plugging in hackneyed characters into cliched situations.

It's not “selling out” and giving up your artistic integrity

The Hero's Journey is a set of steps, scenes, character types, symbols, and themes that tend to recur in stories regardless of culture or time period. Within these archetypes are nearly infinite variations and unique perspectives that are impacted by culture and period, reflecting wonderful traits of the authors and audiences.

Also, the Hero's Journey is a process that your reader expects your story to follow, whether they know it or not. This archetype is hard-wired into our D.N.A. Let's look at how to use it to make your own stories stronger.

What Is the Hero's Journey?

The Hero's Journey is the timeless combination of characters, events, symbols, and relationships frequently structured as a sequence of twelve steps. It is a storytelling structure that anyone can study and utilize to tell a story that readers will love.

First identified and defined by Joseph Campbell, the Hero's Journey was theorizied in The Hero With a Thousand Faces . Today, it has been researched and taught by great minds, some including Carl Jung and Christopher Vogler (author of The Writer's Journey: Mythic Structure for Writers ).

This research has given us lengthy and helpful lists of archetypes , or story elements that tend to recur in stories from any culture at any time.

And while some archetypes are unique to a genre, they are still consistent within those genres. For example, a horror story from Japan will still contain many of the same archetypes as a horror story from Ireland. There will certainly be notable differences in how these archetypes are depicted, but the tropes will still appear.

That's the power of the Hero's Journey. It is the skeleton key of storytelling that you can use to unlock the solution to almost any writing problem you are confronted with.

Why the Monomyth Will Make You a Better Writer

The Hero's Journey is the single most powerful tool at your disposal as a writer.

But it isn't a “rule,” so to speak. It's also not a to-do list.

If anything, the Hero's Journey is diagnostic, not prescriptive. In other words, it describes a story that works, but doesn't necessarily tell you what to do.

But the reason you should use the Hero's Journey isn't because it's a great trick or tool. You should use the Hero's Journey because it is based on thousands of years of human storytelling.

It provides a way to connect with readers from all different walks of life.

This is why stories about fantastical creatures from imaginary worlds can forge deep emotional connections with audiences. Hollywood knows this, and its best studios take advantage. As an example, The Lord of the Rings, by J. R. R. Tolkien, contains mythical creatures like elves and hobbits. Yet it is Frodo's heroic journey of sacrifice and courage that draws us to him like a magnet.

Step 7: Approach to the Inmost Cave

Eventually the Hero must arrive at the destination, and that destination is frequently a fortress, cave, or dungeon crawling with monsters, enemies, or traps. This will lead to the story's climax, but the best heroic journeys include a step before the big fight. It's called the Approach, and it gives your Hero (and their companions) a moment to pause, breathe, and truly weigh the stakes of what's about to happen.

In this scene, the Hero's loyal companion might abandon them (at least for awhile); it could be when the Shadow reveals a new weapon, minion, or threat; it could be when the Hero completes some final training, often depicted in film as a montage. There are many ways to force your Hero to stop and think, and your reader will thank you for doing it.

Step 8: The Ordeal

Every heroic journey features a unique Shadow with a unique “fortress,” and yours will, too. As your Hero enters this place, it's time to clash swords!

There must be a scene where the Hero (and possibly their companions) sneaks in, attacks, parachutes down . . . whatever is true for the world and story you're telling. And it is usually one of the most fun scenes to write. While this may not be the actual final battle, you want the stakes to be high and absolutely thrilling.

Step 9: The Reward

For their valiant efforts, the Hero must acquire the goal, yet the goal, as acquired, must be revealed to be inadequate. Usually this takes shape by the Hero reaching a crisis in their inner journey, where an inner need (for justice, peace, morality, etc) comes into conflict with the reality of the physical goal and what it provides (like wealth, fame, comfort, etc).

The point of this step in the Hero's Journey is that the Reward is never  enough. As much as we believe they will, the physical rewards of life never satisfy as deeply as we hope. The Hero's Journey reflects this universal human truth by continuing the story even after the Hero seems to get what they want.

Step 10: The Road Back

Another way to identify the Road Back could be the  Response to the Reward,  whether it is the Hero's response (disgust, disappointment, resolve, etc) or the Shadow's (vengeance, change-of-heart, etc). After the Hero acquires the goal, there must be a flight or return back to the Ordinary World.

The key to the Road Back is that it creates a false sense of peace, safety, and finality. Because the Hero has seemingly gotten what they wanted all along, the reader may be left with a sense of completeness, but not a deep thematic satisfaction. Some readers might even wonder why the book isn't complete yet.

Step 11: Resurrection

Everything in the Hero's Journey leads up to this climactic step: the Resurrection. In this scene, the Hero must face the story's evil in an ultimate way, often in the actual final battle (after the fake-out ending in Step 10). Then the Hero must  suffer a form a death. It may not be literal, actual death; but it must be a death, regardless. During this death, the hero is often trapped somewhere, like a dungeon or the “belly of the whale.”

Then the Hero must be resurrected. This is not easy to pull off. It requires careful planning and revision when the details don't add up exactly as you'd like. But through their own power, skill, righteousness, cleverness, or kindness to others, the Hero must earn a resurrection that brings them back into the fight.

Step 12: Return With the Elixir

The conclusion of your Hero's Journey necessitates some kind of return. This is a return to the original Ordinary World, or a return to the community of the world if it has had to relocate.

When they return, the Hero brings back gifts and blessings, an ultimate boon that usually takes physical form, like food, rain, or safety. However, it also takes spiritual form, as in hope, faith, and love. The Hero must  bring these gifts back and share them with their community. It is essential to your reader's experience of catharsis, and represents the apotheosis of the story's themes and values.

Inside the Steps: 5 Essential Hero's Journey Scenes

One final way to do this is by noting checkpoints as they outline and/or verify if and how the Hero's Journey works in their story.

To distill this lengthy structure into an easy checklist, writers need to learn how to plan and draft five scenes that are the building blocks of a well-written Hero's Journey. I cover each of these in their own individual post, which I highly recommend you check out:

Scene One: “Choice to Go” 

Two: “Initation” 

Scene Three: “Task” 

Four: “All Hope is Lost” 

Scene Five: “Hero Returns with the Ultimate Boon”

Structure is an extremely subjective matter to storytellers. It is the source of the schism between so-called “Planners” (those who write with a plan) and “Pantsers” (those who write by the seat of their pants ).

No matter where your preference lies, there are principles of storytelling that can benefit you on your mission to write a great story with a solid, timeless Hero's Journey at its core.

In order to help you apply the Hero's Journey Twelve Steps to your story, consider these three (practical!) principles of solid story structure:

1. Divide Your Story Into 3 Acts

How does Three-Act Structure overlap with a Twelve-Step Hero's Journey? It's actually not that complicated. Usually, the Three-Act Hero's Journey looks like this.

Act 1 = Steps 1 through 5

The Beginning of your story shows the reader the Hero's Ordinary World, their Call to Adventure and Refusal, the introduction and early work of the Mentor, and the Hero's “Choice to Go,” or Crossing of the Threshold.

Act 2 = Step 6

Yup. All of Act Two, the Middle Build, is a single Step: Trials, Allies, and Enemies. This is why it's essential to realize that this Step uses the entire twelve-step structure within itself, and must put the Hero to the test a number of times on their journey toward the final goal.

Act 3 = Steps 7 through 12

The Ending of the story begins when the Hero pauses to Approach the final Ordeal. It then proceeds to the major Ordeal, the Reward and consequential false ending, any Road Back that may be involved, the ultimate showdown resulting in Resurrection, and the Hero's triumphant Return with the Elixir.

2. Use Word Counts to Plan Your Drafting

There are benefits to generating an idea of how many words and chapters you should be writing. If that sounds like too much planning for you, consider this question: Do you like wasting time?

I don't. And I'd prefer to waste as little as possible. That's one of the great benefits of planning your writing with word counts in mind.

Knowing a rough estimate of how a Hero's Journey could break down by the numbers can help you plan, write, and edit a novel with a steady and strong pace. And simultaneously, it's likely that this road map will give you even more motivation to finish your story.

You might also consider devoting certain percentages of your time to the Beginning, Middle, and Ending of your book, which I'll cover more in a future post.

3. Specifically Plan Your Steps

Once you've made upon a rough word count estimate, you can plan your steps quite deliberately. As you complete this process, you can alter your estimate as well.

With this kind of plan in place, you can determine when it's time to move on to the next step as you draft. This isn't to “follow the rules,” but to stay attuned to the kind of stories that readers love and have loved for thousands of years.

With this in mind, you'll be able to use the Hero's Journey as a guide that provides a massive canvas for you to freely paint upon—and one that will come in extreme convenience as you study and apply the Twelve-Step Hero's Journey.

Hero's Journey Examples

Learning these concepts one-by-one is certainly useful, but might not help you see the power in a well-told, well-structured Hero's Journey story.

In order to really master the Hero's Journey, you can explore popular books and films that use these steps and archetypes with expert artistry.

These three examples were a turning point in my writing career while studying the Hero's Journey:

Example #1: Star Wars

Perhaps the most obvious Hero's Journey example, Star Wars  contains a feast of archetypes and structural choices that will help us see Campbell's work in action.

As an appetizer, I explore some Hero's Journey essentials in Star Wars in its own post. In it, I discuss topics like the ways Luke Skywalker is an ideal Hero,  and how on his journey, Luke faces the villainous Darth Vader, the story's Shadow . And who could forget the mysterious supernatural aid: Luke's Mentor , Obi-wan?

Whether you love or hate George Lucas's space opus (and/or what Disney has done with it since 2012), the films of the Star Wars  universe are excellent examples to study and learn from.

Example #2: Toy Story

Few Hollywood studios regularly utilize the Hero's Journey to incredible effect more than Pixar. In its first outing, Toy Story,  Pixar successfully told two  Hero's Journeys for both Sheriff Woody and Buzz Lightyear. In subsequent sequels, it would recapture the magic, taking its cowboy protagonist along a sequence of heroic steps that resonant with the human experience.

For example, Woody begins in an Ordinary World  in which he comfortably runs Andy's bedroom; he's Called to Adventure  when a new toy arrives and challenges him for the role of Andy's favorite toy; and he Refuses the Call  by choosing a crooked path, in which he attempts to have Buzz knocked into a corner where Andy won't find him.

As you can imagine, the story continues from there, with Woody and Buzz split between two worlds, and our heroes choices seem to perfectly follow the Hero's Journey as they attempt to reunite with Andy and forge a relationship that isn't purely antagonistic.

Beloved by generations of audiences, Toy Story  is an ideal work to focus on as we study Campbell's work.

Example #3: The Hunger Games

The dystopian genre is filled with unlucky heroes who realize that their worlds are broken, only to rise up against invincible forces. In one of the most popular of these stories, Suzanne Collins's The Hunger Games,  follows a dirt-poor girl on a quest to unseat a tyrant and bring justice to Panem. As you certainly expected, The Hunger Games  is a perfect case study of the power of myth to bring a fantastic world into stark reality.

For example, Katniss Everdeen, the story's hero, follows in the footsteps of many other protagonists by bearing a Magic Weapon,  or object that seems to heighten the hero's powers and reveal his/her greatness.

Once out of her comfort zone, she endures numerous Tests and Trials,  including the lengthy Task  of surviving the Hunger Games themselves. Along the way she enters a Belly of the Beast,  or cave, where she must nurse her partner Peta back to health. And in the story's gripping conclusion, Katniss must survive an onslaught of Creatures of Nightmare  as the “Mutts” swarm the Cornucopia where she and Peta must make their last stand.

These situations, symbols, and more appear all throughout the Hunger Games trilogy, and I'll share exactly how these Hero's Journey essentials apply in a future post. 

Additional Examples of The Hero's Journey

These three stories are by no means the only examples of the monomyth executed to perfection. Some other stories great for analyzing the Hero's Journey could include:

• Pixar's WALL-E
• Back to the Future
• The Great Gatsby
• Pride and Prejudice,  by Jane Austen
• Alien and Aliens  (directed by Ridley Scott and James Cameron, respectively)

Hero's Journey Character Archetypes

Every story begins with great characters, and the Hero's Journey is the study of recurring character types , known as archetypes.

A character archetype is a character type that serves a specific role in a story and tends to reoccur in myths, legends, and stories across genres, cultures, and time periods.

In order to be properly utilized, a character archetype must fulfill its set purpose while exhibiting new, innovative traits. There are several important character archetypes used in heroic storylines—especially these five: hero, shadow, loyal retainer, mentor, and threshold guardians.

5 Hero's Journey Symbols to Use

A Hero's Journey Symbol, also known as a symbolic archetype , is an object, location, or image in a story that contains more than one functional meaning. It has both a physical meaning in the story world and a thematic meaning for the reader to interpret.

Within your Hero's Journey scenes and relationships, you can use objects and small events to add even more thematic significance to your story.

5 Hero's Journey Themes to Explore

A Hero's Journey Theme is a relationship between two opposite ideas or elements. Throughout the story, the pros and cons of each idea/element are explored, with the Hero making high stakes choices in the context of this conflict-filled relationship. The conclusions the reader comes to about this relationship are its themes.

Star Wars, Toy Story,  and The Hunger Games  are just three members of a near-limitless collection of stories, new and old, that use the Hero's Journey structure and archetypes to thrill readers.

Journey vs. Destination: Why Life is a Journey, Not a Destination

W ith your permission, I’d like to tell you a story. A story that perfectly illustrates why, when it comes to the "journey vs. destination" conversation, the journey is in fact the more important of the two. 

I heard or read this story somewhere a while back (at least I think I did).

I may have come across it in a fitness magazine several years ago, but it’s been so long that I’m going to have to make up the name of the main character and fill in some of the details as I see fit.

Think of this story like one of those “based on a true story” movies. The names and characters may not be real... but the lesson sure is.

Heck, even the picture further down in this blog post is just one I found online that illustrated the point of the story perfectly… but hell if I know who the woman in the picture actually is (LOL) .

You may be wondering why I’ve decided to tell you such a story (given that I can‘t even remember where I heard it in the first place).

Honestly, it’s because I love you and I want to get a really important point across to you about “Journey vs. Destination” .

Besides, if me telling you an “Edutaining” (educational + entertaining) story gets you to have a positive shift in the way you understand life... then I’ll take it!

Not to mention the fact that I’m willing to bet you a clean, crisp $100 bill, that not only is the essence of this story true, but it’s probably happened dozens of times.

Truth be told...

The purpose of this story is, in part, to get you to understand the importance of NOT achieving your goals.

“But, Devon” you say ... ” I thought that I was supposed to have goals and strive to achieve them.”

Yes, you are.  But you also need to understand something about the journey you take when you strive to reach your goals.

Just like Mary.

She had a goal (she also had a little lamb... HA! – just playing)

But in all seriousness...

Mary hated her weight...

So she set a goal (a.k.a. “destination”) to lose 20 pounds.

She started going to the gym, working out hard, lifting weights, eating right, and all that other stuff you’re supposed to do.

Week after week, Mary stuck to her plan.

But week after week, she found that the weight just would not come off.

But she didn’t give up (because she was committed to her goal).

Every time she stepped on the scale and didn’t like what it said, that just strengthened her resolve to work harder.

But after six full weeks of doing EVERYTHING she was supposed to do, the EXACT way she was supposed to do it, Mary hadn’t lost a single pound.

She was just as far away from her goal (destination) as the day she began.  

Now, let's stop here for a moment...

Sometimes the Journey is Better Than the Destination

Mary’s goal was to lose 20 pounds, right?

She took the actions she was supposed to take, right?

But she wasn’t moving any closer to her goal.

Now, be honest. Would you, at this point, have given up on your weight loss goal?

Well, if you would have given up, then you would’ve missed the gift that would’ve been discovered had you continued the JOURNEY .

Why Human Beings Must Embrace the Journey...

You see, what Mary discovered after six weeks of working out, is that her body is able to build muscle really easily.

So, while she was in fact losing fat, she was also, simultaneously, gaining muscle (but her weight remained the same because muscle is more dense than fat) .

In essence, the scale was lying to her.

The scale kept reading 138 lbs. (63 kg)…

But her body composition was completely different. Heck, on some days she even weighed MORE than her original weight.

Her body was in fact transforming, and it was becoming clearer not just when she looked at herself in the mirror, but in the compliments and attention she was getting. 

Noticing the changes to her body, Mary decided to stop looking at the scale, and embrace how easily she put on muscle.

A few months later she entered one of those fitness/figure competitions and took home 1 st place!

Today, she regularly competes in fitness competitions and is in love with her body (as she should be).

She weighs MORE than her original body weight, and to this day she never reached her goal (destination) of losing 20 lbs.

Life Lessons From This Journey vs. Destination Story

The point of this story is to get you to understand the REAL reason the journey is more important than the destination, and the point of setting goals .

The point of setting goals is NOT (necessarily ) to reach the goal. This is what most other websites and “gurus” miss.

(Besides, reaching the goal itself is often anti-climactic.)

PAY ATTENTION:  Because what I'm about to share with you is the "SEXY" of this article.  (Note: The “ SEXY ” is the main point/essence/big life-changing idea that you can take an apply to other areas of your life )

The Real Point Of Goal Setting Is Two-Fold

FIRST - The point of goal setting is to go through the process of growing as a person. That growth can ONLY be achieved by working towards a goal.

SECOND - The point of goal setting is to uncover new realities, truths, and new goals along the way. In other words, the purpose of goal setting (and taking action towards said goals) is to expose the gifts found along the JOURNEY .

Let Me Put It Another Way:

It’s like starting at point “A”...

Heading towards point “B” (your initial goal)...

And along the journey, you discover point “C”,  an even awesomer destination than point B, but one that you couldn’t see when you were at point “A”.

Re-read the above statement, 2 or 3 more times… It’s the KEY to everything!! That is the SEXY!

Mary’s “goal” (her destination) was never to be a fitness competitor. It was to lose weight.

So, she started working hard towards that goal.

Along the way, she discovered a new path (one that she would’ve NEVER seen had she not embarked upon the journey toward her original goal).

Think about it…

Did Mary ever reach her original goal? Did she reach her desired outcome?

She failed miserably at it.

But in doing so she found a greater gift .

Funnily enough, that gift was found in her weighing MORE than she thought she wanted to weigh.

(Let that sink in for a moment!)

My Personal Journey vs. Destination Example...

I remember back in 2014 when I set a goal for myself of opening an office and managing a sales team that generated $300,000+ a month in sales.

I launched my company, did $100,000 in sales the first month, hired a business coach and a dozen new employees, and started marching towards my goal of $300,000 a month.

9 Months later I was broke.

I worked hard toward my goal but “failed” miserably at it.

But in my failure I discovered something.

I discovered that I had ZERO desire to run a sales team, work out of a “real” office, or do any of the other mess I was doing.

I also discovered that making six figures a month isn’t all it’s cracked up to be - if you have to exchange it for your happiness and sanity.

That failure caused me to change my entire business model.

Along the JOURNEY , I discovered what I really wanted my life and business to look like.

So, I downsized.

I sub-leased my office to another company.

I went from 12 employees to 5.

And I set it up so that everyone could work from home.

The end result…

I was 10X happier!

I hope it does.

And I hope that now when you hear people talking about "the journey vs. the destination", you understand exactly why people say the journey is the more important of the two.

Journey vs. Destination Quotes

I often like to end my blogs with a quote that inspires and motivates my readers.

In this case, the whole article is based on a famous quote. 

So, instead, I'm going to share some fun history on that very quote...

Ralph Waldo Emerson is often credited for the famous quote, "Life is a journey, not a destination."

However, an exact match to that quote in his works has not been found. 

The Actual Ralph Waldo Emerson Quote

Ralph's closest related remark that he wrote goes...

"To finish the moment, to find the journey's end in every step of the road, to live the greatest number of good hours, is wisdom." -Ralph Waldo Emerson

The closest match is actually from a 1920 periodical called "The Christian Advocate" that wrote:

"He wanted his friends to realize that life is a journey and not a destination; that the heart must be set upon those matters of character which are eternal and not upon those matters of sensation which pass away." -Lynn H. Hough

Other 'Journey Better Than Destination' Quotes

• "Success is not a destination, but a journey." -anonymous, 1929
• "Happiness is a journey, not a destination." -1935 story in the Clevelan Plain Dealer
• "Life’s a journey not a destination and I just can’t tell just what tomorrow brings." -1993 Aerosmith song, Amazing

Basically, no one really knows who first used the words "life is a journey, not a destination" but it's good advice regardless. That's clear from the many iterations of the quote over the course of generations.

The life lesson is this: set goals to help move you forward, but enjoy the journey.

Never forget that life is a journey that teaches us along the way. Be prepared to adjust your path and go with the flow as you find new meaning and better dreams you couldn't predict.

How to Start Your Journey

The first steps of your journey should lay your foundation with a healthy mindset and a clear idea of the habits you need to form. Establishing those habits will be your true goal, just like establishing healthy habits ended up being Mary's true goal.

The Heroine Journeys Project

Exploring and documenting life-affirming alternatives to the hero's journey, there’s more than one journey: heroine journeys, hero journeys, healing journeys.

Narrative arcs and journeys give form and expression to abiding human dreams, fears, pursuits, and longings.  For thousands of years, stories and art have helped people confront internal and external obstacles, find personal meaning and spiritual purpose, and seek a place they can call home in a community larger than themselves. 

Some literature and film include one or more characters with a hero’s journey and others who are taking one of the heroine journeys .   There can also be considerable overlap in the internal and external conflicts and means of resolving them.  However, there are   important differences between the Hero’s  Journey and Heroine Journeys. We will address many of the differences in our blog posts, and here are a few.

The hero’s journey typically begins with a “call to adventure” in which the hero is called upon to leave his home or protective community for a wider, more exciting world.  The heroine’s journey often begins with a betrayal or disillusionment– a  realization that the idealized world where it is assumed she will pass her adult years is not what she thought it would be.  Thus, the hero’s story starts with a dream of adventure and excitement, whereas the heroine’s journey is often motivated by a threat to her self, either literally or psychologically.

Although we refer to the alternative to Campbell’s Hero’s Journey as the Heroine’s  Journey both men and women can have experiences and narratives that follow the hero or heroine journey arc.  (For a list of Academy Award winning films with male protagonists that follow the heroine’s journey and female protagonists that follow the hero’s journey, click here. ) The most common male  heroine’s journey protagonists are those that are outsiders in the dominant community because of their race, political or sexual orientation, gender identity, sensibility, illness, disability, or immigrant status.  Their outsider status is often a precipitating factor in their initial rejection or betrayal, and they have the same difficulties as women in being comfortable with the limitations of conventional male standards of success and are often undermined after the initial celebration of their return home with the desired accolades or treasure.

Last (for now) and certainly not least, when the hero reaches his destination he is acknowledged as a valued, and often revered, member of some community; often he is made king as a result of vanquishing an enemy of the realm.  The heroine’s journey does not culminate in this sort of victory; her quest ends with wholeness– an  integration of polarities that usually includes opposites associated with the “masculine” and feminine”  but may  include other polarities such as success and failure, life and death, illness and health, etc.

Some differences between Hero, HEROINE, and Healing Journeys

The primary focus of the healing journey, as the name implies, is a physical and mental/emotional/spiritual paradigm shift that enables the protagonist to kindly accept his or her circumstances and him/herself.  The focus is on an individual, although the individual may also be viewed as representative of a larger group, or humanity (and sometimes a group is personified as an injured  or ill individual).   The healing journey begins with hurt and ends with wholeness as do many heroine journeys, but the focus is on the internal battle, and the internal transformation that is required to meet one primary identifiable obstacle or limitation (such as addiction, having cancer, dyslexia, PTSD, having been betrayed, learning to be a mother to an unusual child, being near death, etc.).

The early stages of the journey are characterized by attempts to deny, argue with, and aggressively fight the pain/illness followed by loss of love for self and capitulation which ends in deeper illness/ death if the journey is not completed, or is followed by a slow paradigm shift in which the protagonist gives up her vision of wellness, fairness, healing, etc. and surrenders to whatever reality is, and may turn out to be, and moves through whatever physical, psychological and spiritual hoops are set in front of her to enact the paradigm shift that will transform his/her life, relationship with self, and world view.  A healing  journey story often feels something like a hero’s journey story because it  ends with a triumph over the original hurt or over the deeper challenge contained within the original hurt.  Also, like the hero’s journey, the protagonist’s new-found wisdom usually includes the retention of certain mental binaries, such as health and illness or  bravery and denial, although the healed one is likely to define them quite differently than she did before taking her journey.

A world where refugees and other displaced people are welcomed, valued, and supported so they and their host communities can thrive together.

Our Mission

One Journey amplifies refugee voices and enhances public awareness of refugee talents and contributions. We strive to build enduring allies for refugees and use cultural and technological tools to facilitate human connections between refugees and their host communities.

One Journey’s grassroots movement began in September 2017. With hundreds of volunteers, sponsors, and partners, our team of community organizers has hosted close to 100 refugee awareness-raising and celebratory events.

Our signature event is the annual One Journey Festival held on the grounds of the Washington National Cathedral and drew thousands of participants. Raising awareness worldwide, One Journey’s message of “many paths, one journey” reached more than 275,000 people globally.

Highlights included a cooking show with Chef José Andrés, a live interactive experience with refugees in Iraq, Rwanda and Mexico, and appearances by the Pichintu Girls Chorus and UN Goodwill Ambassadors. More>

In 1991, as war broke out in Croatia, Vanda Berninger left her home country for Germany. In 1989, Wendy Chan immigrated to the United States, as a young girl from China, to unite with her extended family, many of whom had fled China as refugees to escape the civil war.

Both Vanda and Wendy now live in the Washington DC area, and together, they are building a alliance. With a diverse coalition of allies, they are raising awareness of the global refugee crisis, helping the public see the contributions and talents of refugees and displaced people. These efforts aim to celebrate diversity and combat the growing nativism and apathy towards a humanitarian crisis of historic scale.

Compelled by their personal experiences and inspired by the United Nations TOGETHER Campaign, Vanda and Wendy launched the One Journey alliance in September 2017.

In just four years, the One Journey movement has reached thousands of people locally through our events and partners, and hundreds of thousands more through our virtual channels. This reach has translated to increased awareness, substantial opportunities for local refugees, and thousands of community members taking action through our NGO partners. Using music, dance, art, storytelling, technology, and food, we celebrate the talents and stories of refugees and put a human face to the global refugee crisis.

Compare multiple persona journeys on the same map

Sometimes personas go on the same journey, but their experiences within the same stages differ. For example, “last-time shopper”, “money spender” and “discount chaser” personas are likely to go through the same journey when interacting with an online store. But as they have different goals and needs at each stage, their experiences with the store will be also different.

Bringing such personas to the same map will help you compare their experiences and come up with valuable insights for your product or service. You can spot the patterns and identify the pain points that are common for different personas and specific ones. Eventually, the ideas you come up with might be tailored to the needs of each persona.

Adding personas to journey map sections

When you have more than one persona on the same journey map,  you can additionally specify what sections relate to each of your personas. 

Tip: Take advantage of the “All personas” option when working with Problems and Pain points sections to write down the issues which are common to each persona and should be addressed first.

If you don't have anything generic, which is applicable to all personas in the same way, replace "All personas" by a single persona to describe its specifics.

Filtering personas

Filtering persona-specific information from the map will help you focus on one experience at a time. Hide the personas you don’t need, work on the journeys of specific personas, and then bring them back to the map to compare the journeys of all your personas.

The Inside Story Of JFK's Last Journey: The Historic Transformation Of Air Force One

On November 22, 1963, the assassination of President John F. Kennedy not only shocked the world and changed the course of American history but also led to a series of critical, on-the-spot decisions aboard the presidential aircraft, Air Force One.

The ensuing hours were a testament to the crew's respect for the office and the gravity of the situation they found themselves in.

The plane that became an emblem of the Kennedy presidency, officially designated VC-137C and known as Special Air Mission (SAM) 26000, had a storied life in the presidential fleet.

Following the harrowing events in Dallas, Texas, this Boeing 707 carried the body of the slain leader, and it did so with honor and dignity, thanks to the spontaneous actions of the crew members on board.

When Col. James Swindal, the pilot, got word of the assassination, he ordered the aircraft to be topped off with fuel and prepared for a rapid take-off.

Meanwhile, the crew faced a decision about how to handle the return of the President's body. "The aircrew simply refused to put the president’s body in the cargo hold," recounted Jeff Underwood, a museum historian.

Instead, the crew members removed four seats from the rear of the plane and cut out part of the bulkhead to make room for the casket in the cabin—an alteration driven by reverence for the late President.

As the world grappled with the news, onboard Air Force One, a poignant and unprecedented transition of power took place.

Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson, aware of the urgent need to reassure the nation and the world of the continuity of government, decided to take the oath of office aboard the plane. This decision was symbolically crucial, signaling stability during a tumultuous time.

Johnson took the oath in the cramped cabin, standing next to a mourning Jackie Kennedy, who was still wearing the blood-stained pink dress.

"It was at that moment," Johnson later reflected, "that I realized nothing would ever be the same again."

The aircraft, which had seen many important moments in American history—including Kennedy's iconic trip to Berlin where he declared, "Ich bin ein Berliner," and Nixon's landmark journey to China—once again found itself at the center of a critical historical event.

Visitors to the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force in Dayton, Ohio, can now see the retired Air Force One and contemplate the gravity of the decisions made aboard it.

It is a stark reminder of a pivotal moment in time, the day when a nation mourned and a new president took charge under the most extraordinary circumstances.

As the plane returned to Washington D.C. with the fallen President, the crew's choice to honor JFK's body within the cabin rather than relegating it to the hold, echoes as a powerful symbol of the respect and solemnity afforded to the office of the Presidency.

How does customer experience influence user interactions with different teams and products? There are many components that factor into a customer’s experience with a product or service and it can be tricky to view a customer’s journey in a comprehensive manner, but a customer journey map can help alleviate those challenges.

A customer journey map visually describes the customer's experience and is authored through their eyes. This image charts out every user interaction with the business so marketing, sales, product, and customer service teams can identify opportunities to improve their experience.

A Salesforce study found that 80 percent of customers view the experience with a company as important as its products and services. The same study found that 91 percent of those polled say they’re more likely to purchase again after a positive experience with the company.

While customer service mapping is an incredibly useful tool, it's extremely detailed and labor-intensive to complete, especially when customers can follow unique journeys within your business. Nevertheless, going through the process of completing one is well worth the investment.

In this post, let's dive into my team's process for creating HubSpot's customer journey map and highlight some best practices you should consider when making one at your company. Learn about:

Before we jump into my team's process, let's look at the map we came up with.

While there are a few ways to structure your map, we decided that a linear design would be best for our company. We highlighted common customer experiences on a timeline and color-coded them to symbolize whether the situation was a pain point or a moment of delight. With this format, our map was easy to read and more actionable for other teams.

Another feature we had were testimonials. While not depicted in the visual above, we asked customers to provide feedback on their experience, categorized their results based on where they were in the customer's journey, then picked one that best summarized our customers' perspective of that interaction. These stories connected the map back to our customers and created problems that felt more relevant and urgent to our employees.

Now that we've broken down the structure and details of our map, let's discuss some best practices to keep in mind when creating one at your business.

1. Think about your design last.

Since a customer journey map is a visual representation of your customer data, you may think its structure and format are incredibly important. While these elements influence the clarity of the visual, they shouldn't be the sole focus of your project.

Instead, you should center attention around your data and don't think about design until you have a detailed understanding of your customers. Use Excel to organize information then analyze different interactions that customers have with your company. Over time, the structure and format of your map will become clear, but you have to deeply understand the customer's journey, first. Once you do, there's plenty of software that can transform your spreadsheet into a map for you.

2. Lean on qualitative data.

The biggest challenge we faced was obtaining data that would validate the feedback from customer interviews. We thought we needed empirical evidence to persuade stakeholders that our customer journey map was accurate. However, we found that stakeholders, both internal and external, were paying more attention to our qualitative data like testimonials and interviews. These excerpts from actual customers solidified the points we were making on our map.

Recognizing this, we shifted our focus from obtaining as much feedback as possible to gathering high-quality feedback that represented major themes and problems. Instead of interviewing 100 customers, we interviewed 10 then looked for similarities across each one.

Since we observed consistent feedback from each response, we didn't need to spend time interviewing more users. We knew that our data's quality was enough to support our conclusions.

3. Survey internal and external stakeholders.

While a customer journey map is based heavily on customer feedback, this information only provides one side of the story. Sometimes, customers don't know how your team influences their experience and if you solely rely on their feedback, you might overlook an important factor that's impacting customer satisfaction . Therefore, it's important to interview internal stakeholders as well as external ones.

For our map, we hosted customer journey map workshops called, "Touchpoints." These were 90-minute sessions with employees from all over the organization that highlighted instances where HubSpot influenced customer experience. Any time employees generated a customer interaction via phone, email, or in-person, that moment was recorded and labeled a touchpoint. You can see how these meetings were set up in the image below.

This brought to light a variety of inconsistencies we had when communicating with customers. By bringing representatives from each department together, we addressed issues that affected the business as a whole and created a more consistent experience for our users.

4. Be aware of your bias.

One roadblock that played a larger role than expected was bias. We expected customers to tell us one thing when in reality, they would tell us something completely different. Or, they would be afraid to tell us the truth and potentially hurt our feelings. If we wanted our customer journey map to be accurate, we needed to implement safeguards that filtered out any influence we had on our customers' feedback.

To do this, we worked with our research team to create unbiased survey questions . They gave us a template of questions to ask and encouraged us to have conversations instead of conducting interviews. This created a more casual environment which made customers more likely to share both positive and negative feedback.

5. Create buy-in.

If you want your map to be effective, your organization as a whole needs to be exposed to it and agree that it’s important. So, before you begin your work, you should get leadership from across your company to meet and discuss your project. This will create buy-in and demonstrate the significance of your customer journey map. 

For our map, we created a project management document that linked each team’s needs back to the customer journey map. This resource logged the desired outcome for each team and created an understanding that we may need time to gather all the information needed to fulfill their goals. 

Once the map was finished, it became immediately actionable. If we didn’t take this step beforehand, it would’ve just been a pretty picture to look at. 

6. Take your time.

If you want to do it right, you're not going to put together a customer journey map overnight. It's going to take time to gather all of the information you need to truly understand the customer's perspective.

For us, it took about three months to set up customer interviews and we conducted one or two each week. We had to find users who not only met specific criteria in terms of NPS® and purchase history but also ones who would agree to meet and speak with us in person or over the phone.

Additionally, we had to find time to meet with our internal teams, which, at a growing company like HubSpot, is much easier said than done. Every team at HubSpot is working towards their quarterly goals, so to make our project stand out, we had to position it in a way that was relevant to our company as a whole. This removed pesky data silos and made our customer journey map seem more urgent and actionable to our coworkers.

7. Start with a simple adoption path.

For many businesses, the customer's journey isn't straightforward. Take HubSpot, for example, where customers can begin their relationship with us in a variety of ways. They can download our free tools and grow to be enterprise accounts or start with marketing features and add sales and customer service, or purchase all of our subscriptions together and reassess them over time. There's no "right" and "wrong" path, just some have more steps than others.

For our journey map, we chose an adoption path that was simple but touched as many products and services as possible. This gave us a baseline to work with and narrowed our focus down to one type of customer.

And, that's important to remember. Your customer journey map must be directed towards one customer persona. If you try to encompass your entire customer base , your map will either be too hard to follow or too vague to have value. Narrowing it down to one persona gives you a thorough depiction of that customer's experience.

8. Make more than one customer journey map.

Since your customer journey map should only target one type of customer, you'll likely need to create more than one map. But, this can be a tricky sell for stakeholders. After all, if you're spending all this time and effort to complete one, why should they invest in it for every buyer persona?

The key is to get started with one and then you'll get buy-in from the rest of your organization. Customer journey maps can be intimidating, especially when you need to do five of them to capture every persona at your business. But, once you start having these conversations with customers and employees, you uncover opportunities to optimize the customer experience. The map is simply a visual aid that showcases everything you've learned from all of your conversations.

9. Present your map.

A customer journey map benefits your entire business, so it should be shared with everyone once it's completed.

In our case, we wanted to share it with leaders across HubSpot. Since we didn't have quantitative data, we presented it by playing audio snippets from our customer interviews. These clips humanized problems that were highlighted on the map and connected our conclusions back to our customers' feedback. Once employees heard the feedback firsthand, the map felt much more relevant to our company's goals.

Torchbearers in Marseille kick off the Olympic flame’s journey across the country

MARSEILLE, France (AP) — Torchbearers are to carry the Olympic flame through the streets of France’ southern port city of Marseille, one day after it arrived on a majestic three-mast ship for the welcoming ceremony.

The torch begins its 11-week journey across the country with about 10,000 bearers passing through more than 450 towns until the Games’ opening ceremony in Paris on July 26.

Former soccer player Basile Boli, who played with the Marseille team in the 1990s, will launch Thursday’s first relay from Notre Dame de la Garde basilica that overlooks Marseille and the Mediterranean.

Basketball player Tony Parker was to take his turn in the relay later Thursday. A fencing champion, a skateboarder, a Michelin-starred chef and a comedian were also chosen to carry the flame.

Participants were scheduled to run all day through the most emblematic places of the city to bring the torch on the roof of the famed Stade Velodrome, home to Marseille’s passionate soccer fans.

The city on Wednesday celebrated with great fanfare the flame’s arrival as Marseille Mayor Benoît Payan said that more than 230,000 people attended the ceremony in the Old Port.

“It’s just incredible, just magical,” resident Amel Sekko said. “We needed it. We never have events or beautiful things like this in Marseille.”

Mouna Boulhas, another Marseille resident, said: “It’s something you have to experience at least once in your life … We have the sun and the Olympic flame.”

During the Games, the sailing competition and some soccer matches will be held in Marseille.

MARSEILLE, France (AP) — Torchbearers carried the Olympic flame through the streets of France’s southern port city of Marseille on Thursday, a day after it arrived on a majestic three-mast ship for a welcoming ceremony.

The torch begins its 11-week journey across the country with about 10,000 bearers passing through more than 450 towns until the Games’ opening ceremony in Paris on July 26.

Former soccer player Basile Boli, who played with the Marseille team in the 1990s, kicked off Thursday’s relay from the Notre Dame de la Garde basilica that overlooks Marseille and the Mediterranean.

“I’m very proud,” Boli said. “You feel like you’re on top of the world, because with an Olympic flame there’s a special fervor. ... It’s the symbol of sport!”

Basketball player Tony Parker then took his turn in the relay. On a nearby crowded beach, swimmers and sunbathers cheered the torch bearers as the flame passed.

A fencing champion, a skateboarder, a Michelin-starred chef and a comedian were also chosen to carry the flame.

“Let’s go for a fantastic celebration,” said Tony Estanguet, president of the Paris Olympics organizing committee. “The Games are back in our country. ... Let’s share this fantastic moment of celebration with millions of people in the country.”

Participants were scheduled to run all day past landmarks in the city to bring the torch to the roof of the famed Stade Velodrome, home to Marseille’s passionate soccer fans.

Many residents and visitors were strolling along the Old Port, enjoying the sunny weather while waiting for the torch to arrive.

Sports Minister Amélie Oudéa-Castéra said “it’s fantastic to give that sense of pride to the French people and to show to the whole world what we’re capable to achieve.”

“’We’re going to give happiness to the whole world,” she added.

One of the torchbearers is Ukrainian gymnast Mariia Vysochanska, who won two gold medals at the 2020 European Championships and competed at the Olympic Games in Tokyo.

It’s an expression of solidarity with Ukraine as well as a symbolic gesture to mark Europe Day, which falls on May 9 each year. Vysochanska will lead a group of 27 other athletes who represent all European Union member states.

“It’s a way to really celebrate Europe, its values and also to demonstrate our attachment to the European sport model,” Oudéa-Castéra said. Ukraine received a green light last year to start sped-up talks on joining the EU.

“(Ukrainians) face that terrible war of aggression, and we want to really express that we support them the best we can,” she added. “This is unity. This is hope. This is solidarity. And we want their victory.”

Marseille on Wednesday celebrated with great fanfare the flame’s arrival, with more than 230,000 people attending the ceremony in the Old Port, according to the city’s mayor, Benoît Payan.

“It’s just incredible, just magical,” resident Amel Sekko said. “We needed it. We never have events or beautiful things like this in Marseille.”

Mouna Boulhas, another Marseille resident, said, “It’s something you have to experience at least once in your life.”

During the Games, the sailing competition and some soccer matches will be held in Marseille.

Last week Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Georgia) ignored Donald Trump’s endorsement of Rep. Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) as House speaker and announced plans to try to force him out. One can only assume she is making that attempt for attention, because it seems doomed to fail on the House floor. Democrats have already pledged to support Johnson, and he has backing from much of the Republican caucus.

You may recall, Greene and the rest of the Freedom Caucus were the reason it took 15 rounds for former Rep. Kevin McCarthy to get enough votes to win the speakership. The caucus is also why he got fired last October , after less than a year. He resigned from the House at the end of last year.

And now Greene — who infamously blamed secret Jewish space lasers for wildfires and compared mask mandates to the Holocaust — is making another play for the spotlight. This time it happened to be the same week that the House passed its Antisemitism Awareness Act , an unnecessary bill that at best appears to be doing something. At a moment when pro-Palestinian and humanitarian aid demonstrations are spreading across college campuses, the law would target dangerous speech against Jews … but the nation already has relevant laws against hate crimes and certain types of speech.

The juxtaposition of Greene’s stunt seems rich, doesn’t it? Does the ruling party in the House condemn anti-Jewish hate speech or amplify it? Do Republicans stand for order or chaos?

The legislation passed 320-91. There were 70 Democrats who voted against it. Greene was among the 21 Republicans who opposed it. Much of the concern from the nays was on defining antisemitism. Some critics feared the measure would infringe on freedom of speech.

What does Greene hope to achieve with her nay vote? Or with her campaign to oust Johnson? It’s anyone’s guess. Two years ago, she spoke at a white nationalist conference , and still she was reelected. Maybe she is exactly what her constituents want. She is very much not what Republican leaders in the House want right now. Advertisement

For those House Republicans who don’t hang out with white nationalists or say antisemitic things, but who have coddled Greene and the Freedom Caucus, the brewing storm looks a lot like karma. You can’t embrace a platform based on anti-intellectualism and half-truths and then get mad when someone does something stupid.

Trumpeting her intention to force Johnson out of the speakership because he worked with Democrats to pass Ukraine aid, Greene said she “can’t wait to see my Republican conference show their cards and show who we are.” Giving us her best Joan of Arc, she added: “Are they willing to actually fight? Or are they going to just keep going along to get along?”

The challenge Greene represents is not about differences in policy. This is about what’s required in a democracy. We are a flawed nation working toward a more perfect union. But we are never going to get there by continuing to allow the most immature among us to get their way. And forcing the House to look for a third House speaker in one term would be incredibly immature.

And here’s the thing: The rot within the Republican Party does damage far beyond Congress. Members of the Freedom Caucus have behaved like spiteful toddlers since 2015 by obstructing government and as a result have normalized tantrums. Now, as the nation is debating what to do about humanitarian aid in Gaza and the protests on our college campuses, the serious conversations that we need to have are constantly being hijacked by political theater — including the House’s antisemitism bill and the recent parade of hearings to grill college officials.

Domestic politics should not distract us from why so many are protesting. Last month the United Nations Human Rights Council passed a resolution asking for Israel to be investigated and held accountable for possible war crimes. Many of the weapons being used in its war against Hamas are American. Everyone in the U.S. should be concerned about Israel’s war and the safety of people in both Gaza and Israel.

Many students I’ve spoken with are focused on the hostages and civilian casualties. Meanwhile some leaders in Washington are fixated on political theater or trying to micromanage campuses or on toppling the latest speaker of the House. There is chaos on both fronts and regrettably immaturity as well.

Oregon's Dillon Gabriel gives back to high school football team

Dillon Gabriel grew up in Hawai'i idolizing Marcus Mariota , a fellow Hawaiian who won the Heisman Trophy at Oregon and helped make the dream of a local kid wanting to play big-time college football tangible.

Since then, Gabriel has forged a record-setting college football career of his own, entering the 2024 season -- his sixth -- poised to leave his mark as one of the sport's most prolific quarterbacks.

Gabriel transferred to Oregon from Oklahoma this winter for his final year of college football, after playing his first three seasons at UCF and two with the Sooners. Along the way, he has accounted for 14,865 passing yards, 49 starts and 33 wins, per ESPN Stats & Information, which makes him the FBS leader in all categories.

By the time he finishes at Oregon this season, he could end up as the NCAA's No. 2 all-time passer and set the record for starts as a quarterback.

Somewhere amid all those passes, he has gone from an aspirational young Hawaiian to the caliber of player the next generation aspires to become.

"The journey of playing at a young age in Hawai'i to now, you understand that you represent so much more than yourself," Gabriel told ESPN last week. "I understand that I represent the state of Hawai'i, and everyone who has done it before me has done it that way."

Gabriel's appreciation for his roots manifested itself Friday night at Mililani High School on Oahu, where he graduated and won the Gatorade State Player of the Year award in 2018.

He hosted an event called "I'm Inspired" at his old school, which included unveiling the new Nike football jerseys and full uniform equipment that he donated to the team at Mililani. Nearly 500 people attended the block-party-style event. Over the past three years, Gabriel has raised more than $250,000 for Mililani High.

Emotions ran high as Gabriel discussed giving back to a place that gave so much to him.

"That's what makes me emotional," he told ESPN, "being once that kid who wanted to be like Marcus and play at the next level and the biggest stages with your teammates that you've grinded with. It's priceless. I want that the same for all these kids, for Mililani and also on the island."

As Gabriel ascends in the college record book this season, he will also be chasing other legends of the past in Hawai'i. Gabriel is No. 8 on the all-time passing list currently. A 3,000-yard season at Oregon would put him at No. 2 -- trailing only former Houston quarterback Case Keenum (19,217) and ahead of former Hawai'i quarterback (and current Hawai'i coach) Timmy Chang, who threw for 17,072 yards.

Gabriel called Chang a "close family friend," and said he hopes any talk of the record chase shines a light on the teammates and coaches Gabriel has had along the way.

He said he'll smile if he surpasses Chang for the state of Hawaii's passing mark. "He isn't going to be happy with me," Gabriel said with a laugh.

Gabriel threw 30 touchdowns last season at Oklahoma. If he matches that total this year, he'll tie Keenum for the FBS touchdown record (155), though he stressed that he doesn't dwell on statistics. Gabriel is also No. 8 on the touchdown passing list, and has a chance to jump ahead of another former Hawaii legend, Colt Brennan, among others this season.

"I've been lucky to play in some dang good offenses and have great players around me that ultimately make it happen together," Gabriel said. "I love to shed light on being part of some great teams."

Gabriel, 23, said he got to build a rapport with Mariota, 30, in part because their mothers bumped into each other at a grocery store early in Gabriel's college career. Mariota's mother offered up her son's phone number for any questions. Gabriel learned how much an encouraging text means from someone who he grew up idolizing.

Gabriel began his journey of giving back to his community nearly three years ago, when he provided the Mililani varsity basketball team, coached by his father, new shoes and uniforms. At the time, he couldn't afford to outfit the football team.

Since then, he has donated money to the school used, in part, to buy uniforms for softball, girls' volleyball and girls' soccer as well as both basketball teams. He also has donated gear and products from at least nine different sponsorship ties, giving him an unintended business education thanks to the new collegiate name, image and likeness rules.

"This is bigger than me," he said. "That's the most special part about it. And knowing so many people came together to touch this project to finally get to this point."

"You couldn't ask for a better experience and vibe," Gabriel's manager, Steve Smith, said of Friday night's event.

He said that on Thursday night, at a dinner to leading up to the event, Gabriel got choked up when addressing the coaches, administrators and sponsors who helped make it happen.

"I love this community, I love this island and I love Hawai'i," Gabriel said. "It's special to me. If I can make a small impact and change the trajectory of just one kid's life -- I hope there's more -- but it's all worth it. It's all about inspiring the younger generation.

"I hope this creates an inspiration to do more, knowing that other people have done it."

After the success of "I'm Inspired," Gabriel is hoping to help make it an annual event. And he's aiming for the ripple of inspiration he felt from Marcus Mariota to continue to the next generation.
