World Cruise Center

Port of Los Angeles World Cruise Center

The Port of Los Angeles World Cruise Center began life as a freight and passenger terminal for the American President Lines. It was later converted into a cruise ship facility and became home to the “Love Boat” . As the size and number of cruises ships increased, the cruise ship center underwent a 21 million dollar major renovation and improvement project in 2003. Today the Port of Los Angeles World Cruise Center serves as the West Coast’s largest cruise port with hundreds of thousands of passengers using the facility. It can accommodate the biggest cruise ships. The Port of Los Angeles World Cruise Center is located at 100 Swinford St. near the corner of Swinford Street and Harbor Boulevard and is easily reached from the Harbor Boulevard off-ramp of the Harbor (110) and CA-47 freeways. The first hour of parking is free. After the first hour, parking is $2.00 per hour with a maximum of $20.00/per day.

San Pedro Cruise Terminal Information

Last updated on February 7th, 2024 at 02:06 pm

Serving as the primary cruise terminal for Los Angeles, San Pedro offers a convenient departure point for cruises along the California coast and to Mexico. Explore nearby attractions like the Queen Mary and the vibrant Long Beach waterfront before setting sail.

There are two Los Angeles cruise ports – the World Cruise Center in San Pedro and Carnival’s terminal in Long Beach . See here for information on the Long Beach Cruise Terminal.

If you are looking for places to shop for souvenirs or to catch a break for refreshments and a meal, check out the restaurants near the San Pedro cruise terminal.

Los Angeles Weather

Los Angeles enjoys warm weather all year ’round, which makes any time a great time to visit. Late summer is especially suitable for beach visits, when the water is spectacularly warm. Keep in mind that the smog tends to be thickest during the summer months, and the autumn and winter can be a bit nippy due to the Santa Ana winds.

LOS ANGELES CRUISE TERMINALS

There are two terminals in Los Angeles, one in San Pedro and one in Long Beach separated by the Los Angeles cargo port. They are about 5 miles (8 km) apart so it is important to know which terminal your cruise ship will be using.

At the time of writing, only Carnival use the Long Beach terminal, but be sure to check with your cruise line which terminal you need to head to.

If you are using a GPS or map program (we use  Here WeGo ), input the following addresses to find your terminal

WORLD CRUISE CENTER :   100 Swinford St, San Pedro, CA 90731

LONG BEACH CRUISE CENTER :   231 Windsor Way, Long Beach, CA 90802

  • World Cruise Center
  • Long Beach Cruise Center

PASSENGER & LUGGAGE DROP OFF

EMBARKATION:   Luggage drop-off at parking lots is provided on a limited basis (indicated on the parking lot signage). For faster service, you can drop off your luggage and companions at the terminal first.

DISEMBARKATION:   When returning you can either retrieve your vehicle and return to the terminal to pick up your companions and luggage in the loading area, or take your luggage and companions to your parking lot to retrieve your vehicle.

The area next to the cruise terminal is for loading and unloading only so you should be prepared to unload/load quickly to allow others to do the same.

TAXIS : As to be expected there is a high demand for taxis during peak disembarkation hours and they may not be readily available. Please account for this wait time in your plans for departure day, especially when booking a flight home.

MONEY MATTERS

The currency of the United States is the US Dollar (USD) which is divided into 100 cents. It is printed on paper bills in the following denominations: $1, $2 (uncommon), $5, $10, $20, $50, and $100. It also includes the following coins: 1¢ (penny), 5¢ (nickel), 10¢ (dime), and 25¢ (quarter). There are 50¢ pieces and dollar coins but they aren’t common.

Although it’s not mandatory, tipping is customary in the United States and some service industries will expect a tip for a job well done. Visitors from outside the country may also be surprised at how much is tipped as it can be quite a bit more than in, for example, European countries.

RESTAURANTS:   It is customary to offer your waiter or waitress a tip between 15-20% depending on the level of service they provided. Usually, you will find the service is very attentive (refilling your drinking, checking on your party etc.) but if the service isn’t great you can leave a smaller tip or even no tip. Typically service that doesn’t warrant a tip does warrant speaking with a manager to voice your dissatisfaction. If you are dining with a large group (usually 8 or more) the restaurant may add an 18% service charge to your bill automatically so check for this before you add your tip. This is usually indicated at the bottom of a menu if the restaurant does this, or it will be indicated on your bill.

BARS : A tip of 10-15% is appropriate at a bar. In some places, you’ll find a “tip jar” on the bar and others you can give the tip to your server directly.

TAXIS:   A tip of 10-15% of your fare is customary, especially if your driver helps you with your luggage.

Paying with a credit or debit card is very common and in most restaurants, bars, and even taxis,  you’ll be able to add a tip to the total on the machine when you settle the bill if you don’t have cash. This is so common that many credit card machines now even have buttons with 15% / 18% / 20% on them so it will calculate the tip for you if you choose that option. You are always given the option to select the amount you’d like to tip, or you can opt not to put the tip on your card and give a cash tip instead.

BANKS & ATMS

Finding an ATM (Automated Teller Machine) will not be too difficult in Los Angeles, with several not too far from each of the cruise terminals. We’ve pinned several banks and ATMs that are near the terminals to the map below.

Generally, in the US, you will find ATMs at banks (some may have drive-thru ATMs), in grocery stores, gas stations, and in pharmacies (of which two common ones are   CVS   and   Walgreens ).

GETTING AROUND LOS ANGELES

Los Angeles is a large city and not designed for walking around. The best option if you plan to explore is to hire a car. If you are flying in then you can rent cars from the airports, check out our   transportation   guide for more info.

LA does have a reasonable public transport system with three different types of Metro buses:

  • Orange buses are local and make frequent stops along their routes.
  • Red buses are express buses with longer distances between stops, but a faster ride if you are travelling a distance.
  • Blue buses are less useful to tourists and targetted at commuters, they travel mainly between downtown and business districts.

Another option is to grab an   Uber ,  Lyft , or a taxi. There will typically be taxis waiting at the terminal, especially during peak embarkation and disembarkation times but if not you can give one of our   recommendations   a call.

LOS ANGELES WEATHER

In general, you’ll find the summers are hot and arid while the winters are long, cool and overcast. The best times to visit Galveston for warm-weather outdoor activities are April, May and November.

The hottest part of the year is from June until the middle of October with average daily high temperatures above 81°F (27°C). The cooler part of the year is the end of November to the middle of March with average daily high temperatures below 50°F (10°C).

Most cruise lines use the World Cruise Center in San Pedro. Cruise ships belonging to Carnival Corp. use the Cruise Terminal in Long Beach which is a huge white hemisphere with an elevated gangway leading from the terminal to the ship. The old Queen Mary, now a hotel and museum is next to the terminal. Carnival Cruise Line just finished a multimillion-dollar renovation of its Long Beach Cruise Terminal facility to accommodate larger ships and enhance terminal operations.

Both terminals are more than 20 miles south of the airport.

Xpress Shuttle and Supershuttle provide bus transportation to and from all three airports. If you travel with two or more people, a taxi is usual the same price or even cheaper.

Los Angeles is huge and distances are almost beyond taxi's limits. That's why most airline passengers rent cars.

If you use GPS the addresses are: World Cruise Center 500 N. Front Street . San Pedro . California . 90731 Long Beach Cruise Terminal is at 231 Windsor Way, Long Beach, California . 90802

Sightseeing:

Despite a relative lack of tangible sights and museums, LA's west side is a tourist honey pot. The reason is obvious: the Pacific-side location, where it's perpetually summertime and the living is generally pretty easy. The center of the action is liberal, likeable Santa Monica : the beach has a bright, busy pier with food stalls and games arcades, and the Santa Monica Place mall and the Third Street Promenade are within easy walking distance. However, things are a little livelier just down the coast in Venice, both on the famously oddball beach and in the cultured, arty shops and galleries on Abbot Kinney Boulevard. Surf dogs, meanwhile, should head north to Malibu's Surfrider Beach or south to Huntington Beach.

Edging inland, past the fabulous Getty Center near Brentwood (off I-405, CA 90049, +1-310 440 7300, www.getty.edu ) and UCLA-dominated Westwood, lies Beverly Hills . Although the big chains have impinged on world-famous Rodeo Drive and its surrounding commercial streets, this is still an undeniably wealthy and glamorous part of town. Slightly further inland is West Hollywood. Like Beverly Hills, it's not home to any major attractions besides its own indigenous atmosphere, but the nightlife here is livelier than in many of the surrounding areas.

Some of the biggest changes in LA recently, at least in the eyes of returning tourists, have been in the heart of Hollywood . Pretty rough around the edges for years, it's recently been cleaned up, with the huge mall development at the corner of Hollywood and Highland perhaps the main sight for sore eyes. However, the old favorites all remain: the hand- and footprints outside Grauman's Chinese Theatre, the 2,000-plus stars that make up the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and, way up in the Hollywood hills, the world-famous Hollywood sign.

There are further changes east of here, in three neighborhoods that sit in various stages of gentrification. Cultured, homey Los Feliz has pretty much come all the way up, while funkier Silver Lake and Echo Park are both on the rise. There's an eclectic mix of people living in these corners of town, and the shops, restaurants, bars and clubs reflect the blend.

Just north of Los Feliz, meanwhile, is the massive Griffith Park, fire-damaged in recent years but still the largest city-run park in the US. The park's numerous attractions include the newly renovated and now-stunning Griffith Park Observatory (2800 E Observatory Road, CA 90027, +1-213 473 0800, www.griffithobs.org ), the Los Angeles Zoo (5333 Zoo Drive, CA 90027, +1-323 644 4200, www.lazoo.org

It's all happening in Downtown LA these days, too. Hotels and condo towers are springing up all over the shop, as people move back to this long-forlorn corner of the city. There's a surprising amount of high culture here: Downtown is where you'll find LA's Museum of Contemporary Art (250 S Grand Avenue, CA 90012, +1-213 626 6222, www.moca.org ), and Frank Gehry's breathtaking Walt Disney Concert Hall (111 S Grand Avenue, CA 90012, +1-323 850 2000, www.laphil.com ), among other attractions.

And if that wasn't enough, then there are outlying yet appealing neighborhoods such as Pasadena, the surrounding desert, and - of course - the theme parks. Universal Studios (100 Universal City Plaza, Universal City, CA 91608, +1-800 864 8377, www.universalstudioshollywood.com ) remains popular, but it's still very much in the shadow of Disneyland (1313 S Harbor Boulevard, Anaheim, CA 92803, +1-714 781 7290, https://disneyland.disney.go.com/ ).

Tours Excursions Transportation:

Nearby Places:

Shopping and food.

From coastline to desert, city to suburbs, malls dominate the LA shopping landscape. Many of the more famous ones, such as Santa Monica Place (at Colorado Avenue & Fourth Avenue www.santamonicaplace.com ) and the huge Beverly Center on the edge of Beverly Hills (8500 Beverly Boulevard, CA 90048,), don't offer much in the way of surprises. However, you'll find more character at some newer malls: in particular, try the glossy Hollywood & Highland complex (6801 Hollywood Boulevard www.hollywoodandhighland.com ) and the open-air Grove (189 The Grove Drive www.thegrovela.com ).

Fashion hounds with cash to splash are directed to Rodeo Drive and the streets surrounding it in Beverly Hills, which attract the haute couture clothing lines. Nearby on Robertson Boulevard, between Beverly Boulevard and W 3rd Street, are a number of designer stores with a little more appeal. And at the other end of the scale, Downtown's Fashion District is teeming with stores hawking budget threads, designer knock-offs and all manner of accessories.

The official U.S. currency is the United States dollar (symbol: $). ATM's everywhere.

Major credit cards such as Visa and MasterCard are widely used and accepted, even for transactions worth only a few dollars. In fact, in some cases, it may be the only way to make a transaction. Note to overseas visitors: Prices of goods and services always seem lower than they really are, as taxes and gratuities are seldom included.

Most states have a sales tax, ranging from 2.9% to nearly 10% of the retail price; 4-6% is typical. Sales tax is almost never included in posted prices (except for gasoline, and in most states, alcoholic beverages consumed on-premises), but instead will be calculated and added to the total when you pay.

Tipping in America is widely used and expected. While Americans themselves often debate correct levels and exactly who deserves to be tipped, generally accepted standard rates are:

  • Full-service restaurants: 15-20% (Often this is the only income of the wait(ress). Tips are either left in cash or you can add it to the credit card slip) Note: Few restaurants add an automatic service charge, in which case it is up to you how much you tip extra. Check your bill!
  • Taxi drivers, hairdressers, other personal services: 10-15%
  • Bartenders: $1 per drink if inexpensive or 15% of total
  • Bellhops: $1-2 per bag ($3-5 minimum regardless)
  • Hotel doorman: $1 per bag (if they assist), $1 for calling a cab
  • Tour guides: Depending on tour length, size, and overall quality of guided tours; for half day tours or less $5-10 per person, for longer tours $10-20 per person.
  • Private car & limousine drivers: 15-20%
  • Housekeeping in hotels: $1-2 per day for long stays or $5 minimum for very short stays (optional)
  • Food delivery (pizza, etc.): $2-5, possibly more for very large orders

Communication:

The U.S. has no official language at the federal level, but English is by far the standard for everyday use. Several states have declared their official state language as English. Spanish is also official in the state of New Mexico, where it is widely spoken; French is official in Louisiana and the Hawaiian language is official in Hawaii, but neither approaches the use of English and are official for primarily historical reasons.

Emergency 911

Opening Hours and Holidays:

In major metropolitan areas like New York and Los Angeles, many drugstores and supermarkets are routinely open 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, while department stores, shopping centers and most other large retailers are typically open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday to Saturday, and often with shorter hours on Sundays - generally 11 a.m. or noon to 5 or 6 p.m. On holidays, the tendency is to remain open (with the exception of the most important holidays like Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day where stores are generally closed)

Los Angeles & Long Beach Cruise Parking (Where to Park)

With roughly 20 million residents in the Los Angeles area, it’s no surprise that many people end up driving to the cruise port and parking.

The good news is that in a city famous for its automobile lifestyle (and the traffic and congestion that comes with that) the cruise ports have made it easy and relatively inexpensive to park.

Below, we’ve outlined your options for both LA area ports, including where to park for the Port of Los Angeles and the Port of Long Beach cruise terminal.

Cruise Parking at the World Cruise Center (Port of Los Angeles)

When sailing for the Port of Los Angeles, your options are somewhat limited for parking. With a major working port on one side and residential neighborhoods on the other, there isn’t a lot of space for independent parking lots like at other ports around the country.

That said, the port offers parking right on site that’s extremely convenient. From here you can simply walk to the ship when departing and be back to your car within minutes when your cruise returns.

Port of Los Angeles cruise parking

Official Port of Los Angeles Parking The official parking for the Port of Los Angeles is operating by Parking Concepts, Inc. They offer parking with more than 2,500 spots right near the cruise berths.

There are plenty of spots and reservations are not required.  Rates are $20 per day for regular vehicles , $40 for oversized vehicles. So for a week-long cruise, expect to pay about $140 for parking.

That may seem expensive, but it’s relatively affordable for parking compared to other major cruise ports around the country. Cash, credit, and debit cards are accepted, and you pay after your trip.

  • Cost: $20 per day
  • Payment: Cash, credit, and debit accepted

Los Angeles Hotels with Cruise Parking While there aren’t abundant options for independent parking lots, there is one place that will offer cheap parking for cruisers — hotels. Many hotels in the area cater to cruise passengers. They will offer discounted parking if you stay with them for at least one night.  We have a list of LA hotels with cruise parking here .

In general, if you plan to stay in the LA area for an extra night or two anyway, we highly recommend using this tip to save some cash on your parking.

A number of hotels in the area such as the ones below have parking packages. See the link above for a full list:

  • DoubleTree by Hilton San Pedro — Port of LA
  • Crowne Plaza LA Harbor Hotel
  • Vagabond Inn San Pedro

Cruise Parking at the Long Beach Cruise Terminal

Like the Port of Los Angeles, you won’t have many options for parking other than the official port parking at the terminal. Still, it’s hard to complain when parking is a mere steps away from the terminal, meaning you don’t have to deal with long walks or wait on shuttles to take you back and forth from your ship.

Port of Long Beach cruise parking

Official Port of Long Beach Parking A parking garage is offer right at the ship for you to park while you cruise. As you can see in the map, the parking garage is extremely close to the terminal.

Parking rates are $23 per day . So if you have a week-long cruise, expect to pay about $160.

Cash and credit cards are accepted. The lot doesn’t require reservations — there should be plenty of parking come cruise day as it is a multi-story garage. If you have an oversized vehicle, then know that the port says “oversized vehicles (those utilizing more than one parking space) cannot park in the cruise terminal garage and guests must make alternate/offsite parking arrangements.”

  • Cost: $23 per day
  • Payment: Cash, credit, and debit cards
  • Phone: 305-599-2600
  • Website: https://www.visitlongbeach.com/

Long Beach Hotels with Cruise Parking Again, if you plan to stay in the area and want to save on parking, be sure to check out  our list of hotels offering cruise parking packages .

We’ve found many offering that are within a short ride to the terminal that will also let you park your car at a rate much cheaper than parking at the cruise port. In Long Beach, the following hotels (and many more) offer parking deals for their guests:

  • Courtyard Long Beach Downtown
  • Hilton Long Beach
  • Residence Inn Long Beach Downtown

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to park at Los Angeles and Long Beach? The two ports that are about 10 minutes from each other charge different rates. If you are sailing from the World Cruise Center (Port of Los Angeles), then the price is $20 per day. If you are sailing from the Port of Long Beach, then you’ll pay $23 per day.

Both ports will accept cash or credit card.

Do I need a reservation to park? No. Each port has ample space for parking. For example, the Port of Los Angeles has more than 2,500 individual parking spaces. Instead of making a reservation, you simply show up on cruise day and you’ll be directed to a spot.

Are there cheaper places to park than at the port? Due to the location of the ports, there aren’t many independent lots nearby. Your best bet is to simply park at the cruise port using their official port parking.

That said, if you are planning to stay the night in the area, there are a number of hotels that offer park and cruise packages. With a night’s stay you can get discounted parking while you cruise. See our list of  Los Angeles and Long Beach “park and cruise” hotels .

Princess Cruises Announces Revised 2025 World Cruise Itineraries

Uncertainties in the red sea and surrounding region prompts rerouting of global voyages.

By downloading this image you agree to the Princess asset use terms and conditions

SANTA CLARITA, Calif., (April 30, 2024)  – Given the ongoing situation in the Red Sea and surrounding area and following extensive consultation with global security experts and government authorities, Princess Cruises is revising the itineraries for its two 2025 World Cruises, which will no longer visit the Middle East or Asia, and now instead, will offer new port stops in Africa and Europe.

“A Princess World Cruise is truly the voyage of a lifetime and after careful consideration with guidance from global security experts and government authorities, we know our guests will understand and appreciate the change to our upcoming 2025 itineraries to avoid certain areas,” said Terry Thornton, chief commercial officer of Princess Cruises. “These global events beyond our control have necessitated these reroutings but we are pleased to continue to ensure these world cruises retain destination-rich itineraries with incredible stops along the west Africa coast and the Mediterranean.”

Island Princess World Cruise

Sailing from North America on Island Princess, the 116-day World Cruise offers two roundtrip options with departures from both Ft. Lauderdale, embarking January 5, 2025, and Los Angeles on January 20, 2025, and ends in Los Angeles on May 17, 2025. This destination dreamers delight will traverse over 36,700 nautical miles, visiting 46 destinations in 24 countries and six continents. The voyage includes visits to historic Bar, Montenegro and Taranto, Italy, along with inaugural World Cruise calls to the idyllic Greek Island of Patmos and to Volos – for the Monasteries of Meteora.

The revised World Cruise itinerary, from February 16-April 9, departs Sydney and will travel to Melbourne and Perth, then on to South Africa. From there, the cruise resumes the scheduled itinerary starting in Valletta, Malta on April 9.

Following is the amended portion of the voyage:

Those guests scheduled to originally depart or join the cruise from Dubai on March 14, 2025, will now embark or disembark four days earlier on March 9, in Cape Town, South Africa. Booked guests disembarking in Cape Town will be refunded the amount equivalent to four days of the cruise fare and those joining earlier will not incur an added cost to their cruise fare. All these guests will also receive a $300 onboard credit as a gesture of good will.

Crown Princess World Cruise

Departing from Down Under, Crown Princess - the largest ship to ever host a World Cruise - is scheduled to depart Auckland May 31, 2025; and Sydney June 4, 2025; and sail on a 113-day adventure visiting 42 destinations in 22 countries, across five continents. This cruise will also bypass the Red Sea and surrounding region, including the transit of the Suez Canal. The ship will travel via Africa instead of the Red Sea and Asia itinerary. The fully revised itinerary is currently being finalized and will be communicated shortly.
