CTP Director Co-Authors Commentary on the Relative Risks of Tobacco Products

House and senate voice frustration regarding lack of enforcement over unauthorized e-cigarettes, fda denies sale of 65 disposable vapor products branded mngo, buc-ee’s, sesh strike long-term distribution deal, fda hires new ctp director of office of health communication and education, first copenhagen store to open in nashville.

NASHVILLE — U.S. Smokeless Tobacco Co. (USSTC) will open its first brick-and-mortar store featuring its Copenhagen smokeless products , according to officials with USSTC parent company Altria Group Inc.

In a Jan. 31 investor call, Howard Willard, CEO of Richmond, Va.-based Altria, said the store will open in Nashville in the second quarter of 2019 and will offer the company the opportunity for “direct engagement” with the tobacco consumer.

Commenting further on the news, William Gifford, chief financial officer of Altria, said Nashville is an ideal location for the store because the company manufactures the smokeless product in the area.

“We think it affords our consumer a great opportunity to engage with the brand, and be right there where we’re manufacturing the product,” Gifford said. “So we’re really focused currently on the engagement with those adult dippers right there where the product is made.”

Started in 1822, Copenhagen was among the first brands of moist smokeless tobacco on the market, with retail sales today exceeding $1 billion annually, the company said. It’s available in original fine cut and long cut, as well as in Copenhagen Pouches.

RICHMOND, Va. —Close talks with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), a minority stake in upstart Juul e-cigarettes and a public step into the marijuana business all happened in a matter of weeks at the tail end of 2018 and into the new year for one of the country’s largest producers of tobacco products, Altria Group Inc.

Faced with the steady decline of cigarette volume across the United States in recent years, tobacco companies like Richmond, Va.-based maker of the popular Marlboro brand of cigarettes have had to scramble to remake their destinies. But none has moved quicker in the past few weeks than Altria.

Here’s a summary of their latest moves …

fda magnifying glass

Following warning letters sent by the FDA last fall to several manufacturers of electronic cigarettes and vaping devices, Altria announced plans to remove its MarkTen Elite and Apex by MarkTen pod-based vaping products until they “receive a market order from the FDA or the youth issue is otherwise addressed,” the company said in a press release.

The move is the first in what could be many steps by manufacturers as the FDA investigates marketing practices for such devices. The FDA held meetings with top manufacturers late last year and announced its intentions to call for more meetings in 2019.

Announced alongside its quarterly earnings report on Oct. 25, Altria related its actions back to the FDA’s September announcement of steps it is taking to address the problem of minors using vaping products.

On Dec. 7, Altria announcement it would discontinue the production and distribution of all its MarkTen and Green Smoke e-vapor products, as well as Verve oral nicotine-containing products. The company said its decision was based on current and expected financial performance of these products, coupled with regulatory restrictions that burden Altria’s ability to quickly improve these products. The company said it will refocus its resources on “more compelling” reduced-risk tobacco-product opportunities.

Altria signed and closed on a $12.8 billion investment in Juul Labs Inc., a San Francisco-based maker of electronic cigarettes and e-vapor products. Announced in December, the investment represents a 35% economic interest in Juul, valuing the company at $38 billion. Altria will participate in the e-vapor category only through Juul, it said.

Altria’s stated strategic rationale for the investment in Juul is that it:

  • Provides a significant stake in the largest and fastest growing e-vapor company with a highly talented management team, successful in-market products and strong innovation pipeline.
  • Offers exposure to strong revenue and volume growth opportunity with attractive unit economics and to significant international growth plans and global e-vapor profit pool.
  • Better positions Altria with adult smokers interested in alternatives while continuing to compete vigorously in all other tobacco product markets.

Juul will remain fully independent, the companies said, but it will have access to Altria’s infrastructure and services.

In December, Altria also made a significant move in the marijuana business, entering an agreement to acquire newly issued shares in Cronos Group Inc., a Toronto-based cannabinoid company. The transaction represents a 45% equity stake in Cronos Group for an aggregate investment of approximately $1.8 billion.

Regarding its heat-not-burn product, iQOS, Altria officials said they could move the devices to market as quickly as three to four months after the FDA approves the tobacco company’s new-product application.

Royal Copenhagen Flagship Store

Royal Copenhagen was originally named The Royal Porcelain Factory and was founded in 1775. In all the years they have produced products with deep respect for the history and traditions of craftsmanship, but never without renewal.

You will find Royal Copenhagen's Flagship Store on Amagertorv on the main shopping street Strøget in the heart of Copenhagen. The beautiful three-storey Renaissance house dates back to 1616 and is one of Copenhagen's oldest houses. Royal Copenhagen has been present here since 1911.

The shop displays the entire Royal Copenhagen's exclusive range of classic as well as modern hand-painted porcelain service, figurines and gift items in an inspiring environment, which also includes the acclaimed The Royal Café, which serves traditional Danish food with a new and modern twist. Purveyor to the royal Danish court Royal Copenhagen is purveyor to the royal Danish court and has always had a close relationship with the royal Danish family. Dowager Queen Juliane Marie, stepmother to the insane King Christian 7, eagerly supported the newly established Royal Porcelain Factory in 1775, and in 1781 they created a porcelain bust of her. She also had her own dinnerware called Juliane Marie. We can thank King Christian 7, who was schizophrenic and married to Queen Caroline Mathilde (who had an affair with their physician Johan Friedrich Struensee), for Royal Copenhagen's most famous dinnerware ever: Flora Danica. Flora Danica was created in 1790-1803 and is decorated with drawings of Denmark's flora. Christian 7 ordered it in production as a gift to Catherine the Great of Russia, who died before the set was finished. The Royal Porcelain Factory was run by the royal Danish court until 1868.

Royal Tobacco Factory of Seville, now the University of Seville

  • Posted by Marta Seville

🚬 The Carmen Tobacco Factory, now the University of Languages and Literature

The building of the former Royal Tobacco Factory, today the University of Seville, is a pleasant visit that is worth enjoying. As Seville was home to the Casa de Contratación, where from the 15th century onwards tobacco from America was brought to the city, several tobacco factories were set up in the city.

copenhagen tobacco factory tour

A historic building that is famously associated with the opera “Carmen” by Georges Bizet

In the 18th century, the decision was taken to build the Seville Royal Tobacco Factory, a large stone building outside the city walls in the Renaissance-medieval and Baroque styles.

copenhagen tobacco factory tour

It has a large rectangular floor plan with two floors, a mezzanine and a rooftop terrace. Powdered tobacco, which was common at the time, was manufactured here and later made into cigars.

copenhagen tobacco factory tour

At the beginning of the 19th century, it had 12,000 workers, most of them cigar makers, like those who appear in Bizet’s opera Carmen , which is set in Seville and is based on the love story of an employee of this tobacco factory. It was the birth of a legend, that of the Spanish Venus.

copenhagen tobacco factory tour

It operated as a factory until 1950, when, after the factory moved to a new building in the Remedios neighbourhood, and following renovation work, it became the headquarters of the University of Seville .

It is one of the largest buildings in Spain. Construction took half a century and culminated with the moats in 1770.

Outer Building

Industrial building, one of the oldest of its type remaining in Europe. Rectangular, measuring 185 x 147 metres. Its façade facing the Prado de San Sebastián has a statue of the Cid in front of it, the work of the sculptor Cayetano de Acosta. It occupies a rectangle area of 185 x 147 metres, second only in Spain to El Escorial, which measures 207 x 162 metres.

On the Avenida de San Fernando side, there is a Baroque façade made of limestone from the quarries of Morón and the Sierra de Estepa, in three sections and three tiers. In the centre, a beautiful semicircular arch flanked by double columns that support a balcony, and above it, a split pediment decorated with royal emblems finishes off the whole, above which are vases of lilies and the allegorical sculpture of Fame , the emblem of the University of Seville.

The eighteenth-century chapel , in the northeast corner, is home to the Christ of the Good Death, the work of Juan de Mesa , of the Brotherhood of Students that processions on Holy Tuesday.

The Old Dungeon-Jail, to the west, was the place of arrest for personnel who committed petty crimes. It is a small, austere building, the headquarters of the Department of Modern History.

copenhagen tobacco factory tour

It surrounds the building on three sides and is marked by several guardhouses, except for the area that borders Calle San Fernando. It was built for security since the building was located on the outskirts of the city.

copenhagen tobacco factory tour

The enclosure, formerly surrounded by a wall, was endowed with railings in 1861 that helped to enhance one of the most beautiful buildings in the city.

Building of the Rectorate of the University of Seville

The interior is made up of 14 courtyards, rooms and large, long galleries. It has a vestibule, or halt, behind the entrance through the doorway on Calle San Fernando.

Central Courtyards

Patio del Reloj , the old stable with a belfry and a clock, has two sections with beautiful arcades. It houses the sculpture of Maese Rodrigo de Santaella , founder of the University of Seville. This courtyard is for cultural and social use.

copenhagen tobacco factory tour

Patio de la Fuente , where tobacco was weighed and loaded, where the four main doors of the building meet, with two sections and a fountain designed by Cayetano da Costa in 1756.

copenhagen tobacco factory tour

There are galleries and wide corridors that structure the building with vaults. It is very well lit by windows.

The monumental double staircase that gives access to the Auditorium and the Gallery of Rectors is worth seeing.

Paranymph hall:   The assembly hall where the most solemn academic events are held. It is decorated with paintings from the 16th and 17th centuries, including San Francisco by the painter Herrera el Viejo.

Patio del Arte: current Art Lab. Old Sevillian courtyard house of the Director. It has a central courtyard, fountain, galleries with arches and balconies and is decorated with tiles, plasterwork and woodwork from the original Baroque work.

copenhagen tobacco factory tour

La Gipsoteca:   a space where plaster casts are exhibited, reproducing pieces from Mesopotamian to Egyptian.

The Library: founded in 1505, enriched with the libraries of the Jesuits and other suppressed convents. It consists of 917 manuscript volumes, books of the sixteenth, eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

Highlights include the Gutenberg Bible and Pablo de Olavide’s Plan of the city of Seville.
