The Trek Lush Carbon 27.5 Has an Intoxicating Ride

The new wheel size makes this Lush a nearly-perfect trail bike

And it is so close. Overall, this incarnation of the Lush is a wonderfully capable all-day trail buddy who even sometimes acts as if she could drop into a cross-country race . In fact, Trek lists the 120mm travel Lush under both XC and trail categories, which speaks to its broad capabilities…but also to its slight shortcomings. After all, it’s never 100 percent possible to do both jobs exceptionally well.

With the trail riding characteristics in mind, I set out on the stream of rocks and logs that are my local trails. It’s one of those places where you go up, up, up, right out of the gate and then down, down, down, with just a bit of rolling in between.

RELATED:   The Juliana Roubion Is Made for Women Who Rip

The first ascent turns quickly from generally smooth to rooty to rocky to are you kidding me?! With its suspension set to trail mode, the Lush made for a surprisingly quick pleasure cruise all the way up, popping up and over obstacles and maneuvering through tight terrain thanks to its short 42.9-inch wheelbase and 13.2-inch-high bottom bracket. The Lush isn’t light, but it boasts some light-riding XC characteristics. It’s very efficient and goes where you want it to go, and the rear wheel sticks tight to even stuttery terrain in and out of the saddle thanks to balanced geometry and a finely tuned rear shock.

Speaking of that rear shock: Flick it wide open and the Lush turns into the party girl she promises to be. The RE:Aktiv suspension has a relatively high leverage ratio, so lighter riders can run appropriately high shock pressure for optimal performance; a regressive valve that keeps it firm until you hit something to open it up; and Trek’s Dual Rate Control Valve technology that keeps it stiff over small stuff and amazingly supple on big hits. It's a cauldron of cool features that work together for a near-magic ride on descents.

Our cruel winter eroded many of our already craggy downhill runs. The Lush was unfazed as it effortlessly galloped down drop off after drop off without a buck, bounce or bobble. It’s outfitted with a sweet RockShox Reverb dropper that made it easy to get my weight way back over the rear wheel.

RELATED: Liv's Intrigue Is an Enduro Racer You Can Ride All Day

The dropper did come in handy for lowering my center of gravity on some chunky, rolling trail sections where uneven, oddly spaced rock outcroppings can knock you about and stall momentum. In situations I sometimes felt that the front and the back of the bike weren’t always in complete agreement. The rear acted stable and predictable while the front was more squirrely and harder to keep on line. I imagine that is due to the combination of upright geometry and the narrow 660mm bars, which felt too tight for a trail bike and made it challenging to lower my torso for extra stability. I also had a hard time holding my line on a skinny teeter totter (I came off), carving into flat corners, and picking through slower stretches of trail.

The other parts on the Lush are spot on. The 11-speed SRAM X1 drivetrain is brilliant and the 32-tooth front chainrings pairs nicely with the 10-42 rear cassette for easy climbing without limiting top-end speed. I was never searching for a gear I didn’t have. The Fox Evolution 32 Float fork performed flawlessly, as did the Shimano Deore XT hydraulic brakes.

Aesthetically, the bike is beautiful, shiny black with pops of green and subtle but feminine detailing. Lush designers always hide a visual treat somewhere on the frame, starting with the little pink elephant on the original. So I turned this one upside and hunted. I was not disappointed. On the underside of the top tube reads the message “Please drink and ride responsibly” a nod to the heady intoxication you’ll enjoy when you take the Lush out for a date on the dirt. I’ll do my best.

Trek Lush review

A plush full-susser with a host of female specific tweaks

Russell Burton

Guy Kesteven

Well-honed female-specific geometry and contact point equipment, dependable kit, sorted suspension

Wheels are overly heavy and tough, narrow bars suit small shoulders but limit lairy-moment control

trek lush 27.5

Trek was the first brand to develop a range of women’s-specific bikes back in the 1990s. It's been evolving the designs ever since.

Properly female-specific setup

The Lush is the cheapest of the four full-suspension bikes in Trek's current range and offers significant extra control and smoothness without sacrificing easy-riding efficiency.

Trek really does make its women’s bikes different to its unisex/men’s bikes. That’s in contrast with brands whose ‘female’ and ‘male’ frames have identical geometry but different paint jobs and size assignments.

trek lush 27.5

Unlike some makers, this isn't just a scaled-down and repainted men's bike – geometry and contact points have both been purpose-designed

While some might prefer a more stretched frame, most of our test team synced with the more compact dimensions of the Lush. The frame sizing is properly small, so try it out in person rather than just guessing.

As you’d hope, the contact points are all sized to suit, with 670mm bars and 65mm stem on our small Lush. Grips are smaller in diameter and the Evoke saddle proved a comfortable perch for everyone.

Pocket rocket

There’s nothing downsized about the ride of the Lush. The 32 spoke Bontrager based wheels are probably overkill for the size of rider that’ll be riding a small sized Lush but they’re still noticeably rapid to accelerate. The RockShox Recon fork is slightly heavy, but at 14kg overall weight is respectable despite all the extra suspension.

trek lush 27.5

The Recon Maxle fork and Monarch rear shock make a winning suspension combo

It doesn’t take long for that to prove its worth – and Trek has made it as easy as possible for less technically minded riders to get set up. While a good shop should help you, clip-on plastic sag guides for shock and fork make it easy to find a good ballpark suspension pressure. From there you can rely on the damping of the Recon Maxle fork and Monarch rear shock to suck up impacts and keep control. The Maxle and Full Floater, ABP rear suspension are a great control- and confidence-boosting double act.

Travel might sound relatively short at 120mm, but the design extends the perceived performance with a concentric rear pivot taking brake input out of the equation. While the narrow bar limits ultimate leverage, the base geometry is stable at speed without wandering on climbs and it’s routed for an internal dropper post. The dropouts can be switched for a stiffer 142x12mm axle too.

The Lush has a sorted, easy to ride persona and the more we rode it the more it justified the cost with boosted speed, confidence and enjoyment.

At A Glance

The Lush Carbon is the crème de la crème of Trek’s women’s range. The Lush series has no less than four models, each with a slightly different build package and price tag, yet the overall Women’s Specific Design, attention to detail and technology carries throughout the range.

trek lush 27.5

You can tell the minute you take the Lush Carbon out of the box that it means business, and not just any business, this is business with a Savile Row tailored suit, Cartier cuff links and a silk tie. (That’s not to say it’s geared up for a man, just that it has that kind of refined sex appeal.) The matt and gloss black combo, with lime green detailing is subtly eye-catching, and wants to party (without shouting about it too much).

As you would expect with the Lush Carbon being the queen of the crop (pun intended), it is specced with an impressive array of components; SRAM takes care of the drivetrain duties with the X1 set-up, whilst Shimano Deore XT handles the braking and Fox has the suspension covered with an Evolution Series 32 Float up front and Performance Series Float at the rear.

It’s worth mentioning at this point that the rear shock includes the all-important RE:aktiv suspension, having been tuned by Trek in California and developed in connection with Penske Racing Shocks to give regressive damping technology that’s used in motor racing; working when it needs to, but staying firm and providing efficient pedalling when not. Each RE:aktiv shock has been tuned specifically for the bike series it’s intended for, and to work with the weights and styles of riders in that category, in this case females (typically lighter weight etc).

The rest of the kit is a mainly Bontrager affair, apart from the RockShox Reverb dropper seatpost. It’s clear that nothing on this bike has been left without thought and it truly is a gleaming, high-end machine, begging to be admired…and also ridden!

Trek having been doing a grand job over the years of pushing the women’s side of cycling in general, and have followed through with this focus and passion by creating women’s specific bikes that really have been designed from the ground up, not just by colouring them in differently. The frame geometry gives a shorter standover, and the angles and tube lengths distribute the weight more evenly between the wheels.

All this is geared up for the slightly different build, weight and reach that women have. It’s easy to assume sometimes, that women’s mountain bikes either haven’t had that much thought, or are just a cheaper (maybe dumbed down) version of one of the men’s models, yet these days a lot more thought has been going into women’s bikes and that fallacy is diminishing rapidly. The Lush Carbon certainly puts that notion to bed in a heartbeat.

On The Trail

Now, as often happens when a good-looking bike arrives to test, particularly one that’s been specifically geared up for us ladies, I got this one out of the box, and after a quick set-up and minor adjustments, headed straight out on the trail without too much further inspection. It might come across dis-interested in the spec, but it’s sometimes a good way to fully appreciate a bike without any preconceived ideas about how it might perform.

In this instance it truly showed just what a superb creation the Lush is. With only 120mm of travel you could easily be forgiven the misconception that this is a tame pony, aimed at the cross-country side of riding - and indeed on the Trek website the Lush series is listed under both Cross Country, and Trail Bike sections. The key there is the listing under Trail Bike, and the absolute disbelief we had after the first ride that on closer inspection realising it is, in fact, only 120mm - incredible!

When riding the Lush it certainly doesn’t feel anything like a short travel cross-country rig (until of course you get to the climbs when the CTD suspension comes into its own and the SRAM X1 has you wondering why you ever needed three cogs in the past), its geometry, technology and excellent build really do inspire confidence and have you riding trails faster, smoother, and somehow feeling more balanced than even before. One of the main nods towards its cross-country affiliation is the slightly narrower handlebars. We swapped these after one ride for a wider pair which gave a far more controlled and planted ride up front, more in keeping with the trail riding the Lush encourages you into.

The RE:aktiv shock works wonders at smoothing out the rough stuff without losing any energy through the bike or overly sucking up the speed. Ridden a lot of the time in Trail mode it just got on with the job in hand whilst you could concentrate on what lay ahead and enjoy the ride. This smoothness and ease of pedalling is of course aided by the 27.5 wheelsize – new to the Lush this year, and a very welcome addition.

We found the handling on the Lush Carbon to be excellent, nipping round various trails, eating up singletrack and weaving through woodland, it seemed happy going up, down and around everything we pointed it at.

I must admit I’m not a fan of climbing, and I’ll often just slip into the granny and day dream my way to the top at my own pace, much to the annoyance of the boys! With the 11 speed set up on the Lush, however, there is no granny ring option - although the gearing ratio gets reasonably close. Aided by the lighter frame weight and the excellent pedalling efficiency I found myself not only climbing much faster and, dare I say it, enjoying it, but I also wasn’t far off the boys when I reached the top!

I think what amazed us the most though was how well this bike handled when the gradient got steeper and more technical going downhill. It really didn’t bat an eyelid, and had a devilish determination to attack and conquer, which seemed to permeate into the rider.

The queen in the Lush castle, this carbon model really does hold her crown well. Lively, ridiculously refined, with a top-spec accessories list all set on a gleaming, lightweight yet strong frame that really does surpass itself by its ability. The handlebars are probably the only area we’d change for more trail-orientated riding and front end handling, however that’s personal preference and feel of course. If you want to splash out and ensure you’ve got one of the best women’s trail bikes on offer, that will have you enjoying all the singletrack you can throw at it then you certainly won’t be disappointed.

The Lush Carbon is rather like that friend at school who was studious, ‘sensible’, and had your parents seal of approval, yet somehow always managed to get you into trouble by having too much fun…

Tire Bicycle tire Bicycle wheel Bicycle frame Wheel

We've bought 2 high end women's specific bikes in the past three years (currently a trek lush SL 29) and both bikes had crap forks which were a joke and practically rigid with a light female rider unless you ran pressure way below the lowest recommended setting. It a shame that you still have to spend at least a grand to upgrade a 3 - 6 thousand dollar bike to make up for intentional short speccing by major bike companies.

27.5 vs 29er – A Full Breakdown and Comparison

27.5 vs 29er

There has been a lot of excitement in the industry lately with the introduction of innovative Mountain Bike technology.

On top of the cool components like Dropper Posts and Electric Mountain Bikes, there has also been a larger change in regard to Mountain Bike tire size.

The 26er that we’ve known since the 80s is now having to compete with the increasingly popular 27.5 and 29er.

And these two new wheel sizes offer a lot of appealing benefits over their smaller counterpart.

But with the two, seemingly great, options available, you may be struggling to decide which one is best for you.

In this article, we break down a few of the most common variables that you should keep in mind, as we directly compare the 27.5 to the 29er.

Similar to the 26er, 27.5-inch bikes aim to provide the handling and reliability of the smaller wheel sizes, while increasing their rollover ability and speed. 29ers prioritize momentum, stability, and attack angle, creating a faster and more comfortable ride over a longer distance, but also sacrificing agility and acceleration .

For a quick breakdown of the 27.5 vs 29er shootout, here is an at-a-glance look at some of the points we break down in this article. If you’re interested in how these tire sizes perform on their own, check out these articles on the other popular wheel sizes available; 29er Pros and Cons , 27.5 Pros and Cons , 26er Pros and Cons

What is 27.5er and 29er?

trek lush 27.5

You may have already guessed by now, however, I will explain for those who are new to the terms.

A 27.5 refers to a Mountain bike with 27.5-inch wheels.

A 29er is a Mountain Bike with 29-inch wheels.

While you can have full suspension or Hardtail in either wheel size, most bikes are referred to by wheel size.

Comparing 27.5 and 29ers

1. acceleration.

trek lush 27.5

Winner – 27.5

The benefits of a 27.5 are right in line with that of a 26er, with a few of the advantages of 29ers.

One of the first things to set the 27.5 and 29er apart, is Acceleration.

While the 27.5 aims to provide a solid middle ground between the two, critics would agree that the 27.5 takes more after the 26er than the 29er.

This smaller wheel size gives it the advantage over the 29er when it comes to getting the bike up and moving.

A 29er, a bike with heavier wheels, will require more energy and time to get up to speed.

The 27.5 on the other hand is only a fraction larger than the 26er, a bike that is regarded as the fastest and most nimble.

2. Maintaining Speed

trek lush 27.5

Winner – 29er

While the fact that the 27.5 takes so much after the 26er usually makes it more appealing, it does come with a few drawbacks compared to the 29er.

Starting things off, the 29er is still going to be the best bike when it comes to maintaining speed.

While those extra few inches do help the 27.5er case, it cannot compete with the impressive inertia of a 29er.

The physics of the 29er wheel gives it a substantial advantage over the 27.5- and 26-inch wheel sizes.

The 29er uses a few of the points discussed in this article to maintain more speed, like attack angle, stability, and traction.

3. Traction

trek lush 27.5

If you’re looking to maximize traction over slick rocks and techy rocks sections, the 29er is going to give you the most efficient traction.

Since the 29er wheel is larger in diameter, your Mountain Bike tires have a fraction more contact with the ground.

This comes in handy when you’re trying to brake on techy terrain, where your wheel is only in contact with the ground for short moments.

This is also a good benefit for those who hit those corners hard, as the additional grip will keep you more stable.

To be fair, the 27.5 has comparable traction, especially when you factor in the different tire sizes and pressures available for each one.

4. Attack Angle

trek lush 27.5

The attack angle on a Mountain bike refers to the angles made between the axle of the bike wheel and the object that the rider intends to roll over.

In short, the shallower the angle, the easier it is for the bike to roll over that object.

Since 29ers are the largest diameter wheel on the market, they will always have the shallowest attack angle, and therefore, the upper hand when it comes to making it over objects.

Depending on the tire pressure you usually run, you may be hard-pressed to feel the difference on those smaller obstacles.

But on those rough and speedy descents and climbs, you are going to feel the stability and control a 29er offers.

27.5-inch tires do improve this angle over the 26er, but with them being so close, the improvement is not as significant as 29ers.

rider carrying mountain bike

As you have probably guessed, the 27.5 is going to almost always be the lighter choice between 27.5 and 29er.

Not only do they have less weight in the wheel, one of the heaviest components on a Mountain Bike, but the frame built around those wheels can accommodate a smaller profile.

On top of the large feeling of a 29er, a lot of riders opt for the 27.5 as it is still a manageable weight.

Not to say that the 29er is taxing to manage, in fact, you may find it to be quite comfortable to ride.

It’s just that the added weight can make the bike feel less responsive, requiring slightly more effort to through around on the trail.

6. Handling

mountain biker cornering hard on mountain bike

Again, the 27.5 was introduced to narrow the distance between the 26ers and 29ers.

What most riders find though, is that the 27.5 aligns more closely with the 26er.

With a shorter and lighter wheelbase than the 29er, the 27.5-inch bike is going to require less energy to move around.

And without the dampening effect some 29ers can have, you will also feel more in tune with how the bike and the trail are handling.

The bike geometry also comes into play here, further supporting the responsiveness of the 27.5.

7. Geometry

hardtail mountain bike

In the shootout between the 26er and the 29er, the geometry debate was just about even.

Since they were both on two sides of the spectrum, the topic of fit and geometry was really left up to the riders’ choice.

However, since the 27.5 is often referred to as the “Goldilocks” of Mountain Bikes, I have to give it the win in this category.

Finding the balance between the smallest and largest Mountain Bikes on the market, the 27.5 really is a great fit for just about any rider.

Being only slightly larger than the 26er, with just as many frame options as the other, a 27.5 bike should not be counted out if you feel you’re too big or small.

8. Climbing

mountain biker riding up hill

If you’ve ready any of my other shootouts or have had the opportunity to ride a 29er, you can already guess who wins this category.

The 29er is the ultimate climbing machine – at least in my eyes. Through those babies on a hardtail, you can climb for days.

I do have to give it to the 27.5, as the easier acceleration can help you climb faster, however, the 29er is going to get you up those bumpy hills in a lot better shape.

Especially if you can keep your momentum on the incline.

The weight of the 29-inch wheels will help your bike want to keep moving forward. Couple that with a consistent pedaling cadence and you’re climbing faster than before.

On top of that, the 29er is going to handle those rocks and bumps a lot better, keeping your energy focused on moving forward up the hill.

9. Strength

trek lush 27.5

While we used to see 26er dominating the discipline of Downhill Mountain Biking, we are starting to see more and more 27.5s at the trailhead.

Unlike the 29er, which has a relatively significant decrease in wheel strength, 27.5-inch wheels are still closer to the hub, with shorter spokes like the 26er.

This results in 27.5-inch wheels that are stronger than that of the standard 29er.

While this often doesn’t come too much into play for the average rider, performance athletes and those who really push their bikes to limit will notice.

10. Stability

trek lush 27.5

While 27.5-inch wheels are stiffer and stronger than 29ers, that does not always translate over to stability.

In fact, 29ers are considered to be more stable than 27.5 bikes by a margin.

Not only do 29ers have more tire traction, keeping you grounded on the trail, but all that added weight also provides a few stabilizing benefits.

To start, extra weight helps 29-inch wheels want to stay straight and move in the same direction.

To jar a 29er off course, a bump or knock would have to be a little bigger than normal.

As well, the geometry of a 29er bike is designed so that the bottom bracket is better positioned between the wheel hubs.

This creates a more balanced riding position on the bike, helping you avoid those dreaded OTB crashes.

11. Availability

man looking at cheap bikes at store

Winner – N/A

The only category on this list that is relatively matched for both 29ers and the 27.5, is the topic of availability.

Since they are both newer innovations to the industry, you can expect them to be equally as available on upgrades and parts.

What is a 29er Best for?

29ers are a solid and comfortable choice for most riders, but they definitely accel in some areas.

For one, they are exceptional climbers.

So, if you plan on riding a lot of XC-style trails with climbs and long stretches, the 29er will be your best option.

Actually, some would say the 29er is the best bike for XC.

What is a 27.5er Best for?

The 27.5 is built to be a great all-arounder and it really is true to purpose.

Offering the additional rolling ability while maintaining a similar geometry to the 26er allows 27.5 bikes to compete in areas like Downhill racing and Jump Parks.

This is also a solid option for any rider who is looking for a bike that can do it all.

Who Should Ride a 29er?

A 29er is a good bike for anyone who is looking for the most comfortable ride, especially if you prefer the feel of Hardtails.

The people who will really benefit from the 29er will be XC riders or people who feel like most other Mountain Bikes feel too small.

Who Should Ride a 27.5er?

Again, a 27.5 is good for a person who wants a bike that can virtually do it all.

With attractive options in full suspension and hardtails alike, you cannot go wrong.

If your alternative was a 29er, you may even find yourself saving some money in the long run.

Can a Short Person Ride a 29er?

Contrary to popular belief, shorter riders can definitely ride 29ers.

Although the wheelbase and bike geometry support a larger rider, there are frame sizes to fit just about any rider.

The best option is to visit your LBS for a fit or possibly some advice.

Chances are, they can help you pick the best option based on your criteria and needs.

In conclusion, the 27.5-inch bike is a solid option for those looking to upgrade from the old 26er or those who are looking for a good all-around Mountain Bike.

If you really prefer the benefits that the larger wheels bring or possibly need a larger-feeling bike, the 29er may just be the bike for you.

Good luck with deciding for yourself and safe riding!

Customer Reviews

Very happy with my new M7 and wife's Moscow Plus

We purchased the NCM Moscow 29 E bike from Leon Cycles earlier this month. Communication was via 'Whatsapp' which I initially thought a little odd but worked out well. Once communication established the transaction was completed quickly and easily. We were able to arrange for the team to assemble the bike for us and we picked it up from the warehouse without an issue. We love the bike and are continuing to find new places to discover using it. Competitive price and great service.

I ordered the bike 4 days ago and today it arrived. Now my first impressions: it is easy to assemble, looks great, is cleanly finished and after a first short driving test I have to say, the hammer. It's totally easy to drive. If it stays that way, I can only say thank you Leon Cycle. Now I can cycle again, despite knee problems. Price-performance top

Great bike, this is my second e bike and by far the best. Watching e bikes over the last 10 years I think the Moscow 29er is fantastic. I live in the Dandenongs outside Melbourne with big steep hills and the Moscow takes them all on with great pulling power and gear range. 48v with 16 amps means over 750 watts of power. The bike is big and serious so getting on and off can be tricky but you do get used to it. With the previous bike (36v at 8amps) I was scared of running out of battery on a big hill and having to push the bike home but not with the Moscow. Also if you take the front wheel off you can get it in a hatchback like my Mazda 3 Which is nice. At $2200 it is a great buy.

Purchased two Moscow 27.5. One for my wife, one for me. Fast delivery, well boxed and easy assembly. Absolutely FANTASTIC to ride and use. Great range, and enough power for steep hills and tough terrain. I highly recommend them. Exactly as advertised and brochure. Looked at many options from other suppliers but these are the best value for money. If anyone wants a little extra range and a few more features then a Moscow Plus may suit. 48 Volt is the way to go. Great support and assistance from the team at Leon to make the right purchase decision. Hope other people may enjoy the ride and quality product. Harry G
