Delta State is located in South-South Nigeria. The state is divided between the Central African mangroves in the coastal southwest and the Nigerian lowland forests in most of the rest of the state as a small portion of the Niger Delta swamp forests are in the far south. The other important geographical features are the River Niger and its distributary, the Forçados River, which flow along Delta's eastern and southern borders, respectively; while fellow Niger distributary, the Escravos River, runs through Warri and the coastal areas are riddled with dozens of smaller Niger distributaries that make up much of the western Niger Delta.

Much of the state's nature contain threatened dwarf crocodile, Grey parrot, African fish eagle, mona monkey, and African manatee populations.

Delta State is inhabited by various ethnic groups, including the Isoko and Eruwa in the centre of the state; Ukwuani in the east; the Ika, Ozanogogo and Olukumi in the northeast; the Anioma in the northwest; and the Ijaw, Itsekiri, Urhobo, and Uvwie in the southwest.

Delta State's economy is based on the production of crude oil and natural gas as one of the main oil-producing states in the country. Key minor industries involve agriculture as the state has substantial oil palm, yam, and cassava crops along with fishing and heliciculture.

Delta State is one of the oil-producing states in South-South Nigeria. The state is part of the old Bendel State split into Edo and Delta State on 27th August 1991, by the General Ibrahim Babangida military government.

Delta State has a total land area of 16,842 square kilometers (6,503 sq mi) and is composed of 25 local government areas

Delta State – "Big Heart Of The Nation"

Located in south-south geopolitical zone of Nigeria, Delta State is an oil producing state situated in the region known as the Niger Delta. The state which was created in 1991 is divided into twenty five local government areas which include Aniocha-North, Aniocha-South, Bomadi, Burutu, Ethiope-East, Ethiope-West, Ika-North-East, Ika-South, Isoko-North, Isoko-South, Ndokwa-East, Ndokwa-West, Okpe, Oshimili-North, Oshimili-South, Patani, Sapele, udu, Ugheli-North, Ugheli-South, Ukwuani, Uvwie, Warri-North, Warri-South,Warri South-West.

History Delta State which used to be a part of Bendel State was created in 1991 and got its name from the delta of the River Niger. The area called Delta State today was once an integral part of the old Western Region of Nigeria before it became an autonomous entity in 1991 after having been part of the old Midwestern State from 1963 to 1976 and the defunct Bendel State from 1976 to 1991. The state got its name as a result of its location within the delta of the River Niger.

Weather/Climate Delta State is situated in the tropics and therefore experiences a fluctuating climate, ranging from the humid tropical in the south, to the subhumid in the northeast. The lessening of humidity towards the north is accompanied by an increasingly marked dry season. The average rainfall is about 266.5mm in the coastal areas and 190.5mm in the extreme north. Rainfall is heaviest in July. Temperature increases from the south to the north. In Warri, located in the south for example, the average daily temperature is 30°C, while the temperature in Asaba in the north eastern area is 44°C.

Cities & Towns Other important cities and towns include Warri, Asaba, Ugheli, Sapele, Agbor, Abraka, Kwale, Oleh, Koko, Oghara, Ozoro and Burutu, with Sapele, Warri and Koko as major seaports.

River Ethiope Source River Ethiope, reputed to be the deepest inland waterway in Africa, has its source at the foot of a giant silk-cotton tree at Umuaja in Ukwuani local government area and it then flows through seven Local Government Areas in the state. By the time it reaches Sapele, it has become deep enough to provide a harbour for ocean-going vessels.

Kwale Game Reserve This reserve is situated in the low coastal zone of Delta State, characterized by rainforest vegetation and deltaic swamps. It is rich in reptiles and water associated animals, particularly red river hog, sitatunga and a variety of brackish, marine and freshwater fish species.

Jamieson River A trip up the Jamieson River is a pleasant outing. If you cannot hire a boat it is possible to get to Jamieson River at Sapoda by car, where there is a pleasant picnic spot. The river up stream from Sapoba is beautifully clear and suitable for swimming, although the water is surprisingly very cold.

Chief Nana’s Palace Living History Museum, Koko This is national monument also known as “koko palace” located at the port of Koko in Warri North, it is a monument that attracts thousands of tourists. It was the residence of Chief Nana Olomu Eborhimi of the Itsekiri tribe, who was a powerful nineteenth century indigenous entrepreneur.

Leisure Paradise Amusement Park, Ekpan Located in Ekpan, Effurun, it’s a place to head for a family day off around Warri. With a newly built roller coaster, a flying elephant ride and waters slides, it’s great for kids. For the adult there’s the tumbler tower, horse bark riding or one should just take a walk round the park or enjoy a nice drink while listening to cool music.

Mungo Park House, Asaba This is a national monument that happened to be the first headquarters of the Royal Niger Company and Nigeria’s first political headquarters in 1900.

Lander Brothers’ Anchorage, Asaba It was built in memory of the Lander Brothers-Richard and John who anchored at about that spot of the River Niger during the expedition that they took over from Mungo Park. The erected anchorage is, however, not the original one but a replica; the original one is at Aboh. The Lander Brothers are credited with the discovery of the mouth of the River Niger. This led to the opening of the West African trade which eventually replaced slave trade. The anchorage has an information centre and a restaurant.

Expatriate Graveyard, Asaba This is the resting place of missionaries and colonial workers that came to Asaba on a mission.

Bomadi Beach Party Resort The Bomadi beach party resort usually takes place on the fascinating sandbanks of the Niger at Bomadi, headquarters of Bomadi LGA.

Delta State is a state in the South-South geopolitical zone of Nigeria. Named after the Niger Delta—a large part of which is in the state. It is bounded by Edo state to the north, Anambra state to the east, Rivers state to the southeast, Bayelsa state to the south, the Bight of Benin of the Atlantic Ocean to the west, and Ondo state to the northwest. On the east and south, the state is bounded by the lower course and delta of the Niger River.

Delta was created in 1991 from the southern half of former Bendel state. Asaba, on the Niger River, is the state capital. Delta State is made up of five distinctive ethnic groups, namely: Urhobo, Igbo, Ijaw, Isoko and Itserkiri. Deltans are known to be peace-loving and hospitable people. Little wonder the state’s slogan is “The big heart of the nation”. It is also home to Warri, which is the most populous of its cities and is its economic nerve Centre. Delta State is an oil-producing state and is one of the nine Niger Delta states in Nigeria. The River Ethiope which is reputed to be the deepest inland waterway in Africa is sourced in and flflows through Delta State. Delta State also has a thriving fishing industry. Delta State occupies a landmass of 17,108 Km2, with a population of 6,037,667.

Discover Delta to Position Delta State As Global Tourism Hub

Steps are being taken by a leading amusement park and resort in Nigeria, Omu Resort, to ensure Delta State become the latest global tourism hub.

The company has come up with a multifaceted initiative known as Discover Delta to attract tourists across the world to the oil-rich state and earn scarce foreign exchange (FX) for the country.

It intends to achieve this goal and redefine the tourism landscape in Delta State through the Leisure Park and Film Village Asaba.

A statement from the firm said in September 2023; it would launch the Discover Delta initiative, which encompasses a series of enchanting tourism-focused events, projects, and agendas.

“The concept, Discover Delta , is a platform that will propel Delta State into the global spotlight, presenting the world with a captivating blend of the state’s culture, heritage, and diverse attractions,” a representative of Leisure Park and Film Village Asaba, Mr Joseph Umukoro, said.

He noted that at the heart of Discover Delta lies a palpable passion to nurture a deep appreciation for Delta State’s cultural heritage and breathtaking attractions that will position it as a global tourism hub.

According to him, Discover Delta will first be unveiled with two remarkable endeavours that embody the organisation’s commitment to elevating tourism experiences in Delta State while others follow.

“The Discover Delta initiative involves a whole lot, including the celebration of the rich heritage of Delta State from the history of the first Olu of Warri till date, a talent hunt that encompasses comedy, the movie and music industry, among others.

“However, we are starting with the unveiling of a coffee book and a 45-minute documentary. The coffee book is a 200-page literary masterpiece that invites readers on a thrilling pictorial journey into the realms of tourism, culture, and cuisines of Delta State.

“It is an exquisitely crafted volume that beckons global tourists to step into a world of colours, flavours, and narratives that weave the essence of Delta State.

“The coffee book invites readers on an immersive journey through the vibrant stories, the traditions, and the awe-inspiring landscapes that define Delta State.

“On its part, the 45-minute documentary, a visual narrative that captures the essence of Delta State’s uniqueness via storytelling and breathtaking visuals, complements the literary endeavour.

“The documentary unveils the magic of Delta State’s treasures, shedding light on the hidden gems, the cultural vibrancy, and the awe-inspiring natural wonders that await discovery,” Mr Umukoro said.

Furthermore, he said that as a son of the soil, he is very excited as the company prepares for the official launch of the Discover Delta campaign in September 2023.

“Culminating from meticulous planning, creative ingenuity, and a shared passion for Delta State’s rich culture, this campaign sets the stage for a transformative chapter in our tourism journey.

“The “Discover Delta” slogan encapsulates our shared mission—to unite, promote, and celebrate the captivating allure of tourism in Delta State.

“With unbridled enthusiasm, we invite all to rally under this banner and embrace the remarkable journey that “Discover Delta” promises. Together, let’s celebrate the beauty of our home and set forth a legacy that future generations will cherish,” he concluded.

Leisure Park and Film Village Asaba is a one-of-a-kind theme park located on Anwai Road, Asaba, Delta State.

It boasts exciting facilities, including one of the largest man-made lakes housing a wave pool, kayaking, waterslides, swimming pool, and others.

Stakeholders say tourism initiative to transform sector in Delta

Stakeholders in the Nigerian tourism sector have agreed that “Discover Delta”, a multidimensional tourism initiative will boost the tourism potential of Delta State. Discover Delta”, a multifaceted tourism platform organised by Leisure Park and Film Village Asaba, is set for launch in September 2023.

The initiative aims to nurture a deep appreciation for Delta State’s cultural heritage and offer attractions that will position it as a global tourism hub.

Powered by Nigeria’s leading amusement park and resort, Omu Resort, “Discover Delta”, promises to redefine the tourism landscape in Delta State, as it encompasses a series of enchanting tourism-focused events, projects, and agendas to be unveiled in due course. In a statement, Representative, Leisure Park and Film Village, Asaba, Joseph Umukoro, noted that tourism stakeholders that have spoken about “Discover Delta” have all concluded that it will be disruptive and pro-tourism.

He said, “The concept, “Discover Delta” is a platform that will propel Delta state into the global spotlight, presenting the world with a captivating blend of the state’s culture, heritage, and diverse attractions.”

“Discover Delta” will first be unveiled with two remarkable endeavors that embody the organisation’s commitment to elevating tourism experiences in Delta State, while others follow. “The “Discover Delta” initiative involves the celebration of the rich heritage of Delta State from the history of the first Olu of Warri till date, a talent hunt that encompasses comedy, the movie and music industry among others. However, we are starting with the unveiling of a coffee book and a 45-minute documentary. The coffee book is a 200-page literary masterpiece that invites readers on a thrilling pictorial journey into the realms of tourism, culture, and cuisines of Delta State. It is an exquisitely crafted volume that beckons global tourists to step into a world of colors, flavors, and narratives that weave the essence of Delta State.

“The coffee book invites readers on an immersive journey through the vibrant stories, the traditions, and the awe-inspiring landscapes that define Delta State. On its part, the 45-minute documentary; a visual narrative that captures the essence of Delta State’s uniqueness via storytelling and breathtaking visuals complements the literary endeavor. “The documentary unveils the magic of Delta State’s treasures, shedding light on the hidden gems, the cultural vibrancy, and the awe-inspiring natural wonders that await discovery,” Umukoro said.

According to him, the “Discover Delta” slogan encapsulates our shared mission; to unite, promote, and celebrate the captivating allure of tourism in Delta State. With unbridled enthusiasm, we invite all to rally under this banner and embrace the remarkable journey that “Discover Delta” promises. The state covers a landmass of about 18,050 km2 (6,970 sq mi), of which more than 60% is land. The state lies approximately between 5°00′ and 6°45′ E and 5°00′ and 6°30′ N. It is geographically located in Nigeria’s midwest, bounded in the north and west by Edo State, the east by Anambra, Imo, and Rivers States, southeast by Bayelsa State, and on the southern extreme is the Bight of Benin which covers about 160 kilometres of the state’s coastline. Delta State is generally low-lying without any remarkable hills. The state has a wide coastal belt inter-lace with rivulets and streams, which form part of the Niger River Delta.

Brief History

Delta State was defined out of the former Bendel State on 27 August 1991. The state was actualized following agitations for the realization of a separate distinct state by the peoples of the old Delta Province. There was yet another state request proposed as “Anioma State” comprising the Asaba and Agbor divisions of the old Midwest region. The then Military President, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida, recognized Delta state but chose “Asaba” a prominent town within the “Northwestern Lower Niger” as capital city. The proposed capital was a virgin land in the heart of the two constituent divisions that constitutes the Northwestern Lower Niger. Delta state was once integrated in the Mid Western state from 1963 to 1976 and later Bendel state, from 1976 to 1991. The name “Bendel” (Ben-Del) coined from the old Benin and Delta Provinces of Western Region-Delta to reflect the integration of Benin and Delta provinces.

Delta State has some historical, cultural and socio-political tourist centers that attract visitors from around the globe. Some of these sites of tourism include:

The Nana’s Palace built by Chief Nana Olomu of Ebrohim. He was a powerful 19th century indigenous entrepreneur who traded with the British. The relationship eventually turned sour. Later, he surrendered (not without putting up a fight) and was exiled to Ghana. His personal effects are housed in this grand palace. The River Ethiope which is reputed to be the deepest inland waterway in Africa (at 176 km). Its source is at the foot of a giant silk-cotton tree at Umuaja in Ukwuani Local Government Area of the state and flows through seven Local Government Areas in the State. It is a place of worship for Olokun traditional religion and also a common site for faithfuls of the Igbe Religious Movement. The Araya Bible Site which houses a copy of the Holy Bible. It is believed that the bible descended to this spot miraculously from heaven around August, 1914. The bible dropped on rain-soaked yam and it didn’t get wet. The site now attracts thousands of Christians yearly. Demas Nwoko Edifice which was built using traditional materials, designs and construction techniques of the Igbo civilization by Demas Nwoko, an architect, builder and artist of international repute from Idumuje-Ugboko, in Aniocha North Local Government Area, Delta State. The Mungo Park House which is now the site of the National Museum, Asaba. The house was constructed by the Royal Niger Company (RNC) in 1886 and was used as a colonial administrative headquarters, a military house, the colonial administrative divisional headquarters, the RNC Constabulary building, and the seat of the Urban District Council at different times. The Ogulagha Beach The Niger Bridge which connects Delta State (by extension, western Nigeria) to the Eastern part of Nigeria. It is a beauty to behold. It was completed in 1965 and cost £5 million. It was damaged during the civil war, but later repaired. Lander Brothers Anchorage, Asaba which was built in memory of early British explorers. The complex has a museum, a graveyard, and many artworks and writings. It houses a replica of one of the boats that was used by the brothers. Falcorp Mangrove Park Warri Kingdom Royal Cemetery which is 512 year old burial ground and serves as the resting place of past rulers of Warri kingdom. A tree is planted on each grave.

Delta State

Delta State (recognized on August 27, 1991) is one of the oil producing states in Nigeria . It is situated in the region known as the South-South geo-political zone with a population of 4,112,445 (males: 2,069,309; females: 2,043,136). The capital city is Asaba , located at the northern end of the state, with an estimated area of 762 square kilometres (294 sq m), while Warri is the economic nerve center of the state and also the most populated. It is located in the southern end of the state. The state has a total land area of 16,842 square kilometres (6,503 sq m).

Dr. Arthur Ifeanyi Okowa, a member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), was elected Governor and chief executive of Delta State in April 2015. His deputy is Barr. Kingsley Otuaro. The state has three National Senatorial Districts (South, North and Central). In 2011 and 2013, the elected senators were James, Manager, Arthur Ifeanyi Okowa and Emmanuel Aguariavwodo who replaced Pius Ewherido who died in 2013 at National Hospital, Abuja. In 2015, Chief Ighoyeta Amori was elected Senator of Delta Central but his election was annulled and Senator Ovie Omo-Agege sworn in as Senator of Delta Central, James Manager retained his position and Chief Peter Nwaoboshi was elected Senator of Delta North. The Executive, Legislative and Judicial Chambers are housed in Asaba with a government house annex in Warri.

Natural resources.

There are various solid mineral deposits within the state -industrial clay, silica, lignite,kaolin, tar sand, decorative rocks, lime stone, etc. These are raw materials for industries such as brick making, ceramics, bottle, glass manufacturing, chemical/insulators production, chalk manufacturing and sanitary wares, decorative stone cutting and quarrying. But these minerals are under-utilized.

Delta state also has huge deposits of crude oil and is also one of the largest producers of petroleum products in Nigeria. Sales of petroleum products is what majorly drives its economy.

Gov. Oborevwori assigns portfolios to Commissioners

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State has approved the assignment of portfolios to newly sworn-in Commissioners in the state.

The approval for the assignment of portfolios was contained in a statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr Kingsley Emu on Tuesday evening.

UWF Football: Argos back in playoffs for fourth consecutive season, will travel to Delta State

The University of West Florida football team is back in the NCAA playoffs for the fifth time in program history, and for the fourth consecutive season.

The Argos, unseeded in Super Region 2, will travel to second-seeded Delta State on Saturday for the second time this season. UWF came away with the tight 24-21 win in Cleveland, Mississippi . All-time against the Statesmen, the Argos have a 5-3 advantage, winning the last two games.

This isn't the first time the Gulf South Conference rivals have met in the playoffs. Just last season, in the second round of the playoffs, UWF won 38-27 – getting revenge from a regular-season loss to the Statesmen a couple months prior in 2022.

Delta State, in similar fashion, came away with a 41-3 home win against Mississippi College.

The Argos finished the 2023 regular season with an 8-3 (6-2 GSC) record, placing third in the GSC. Delta State has a 9-1 (7-1 GSC) record. The Statesmen claimed the GSC championship, tying with Valdosta State.

The Blazers (10-1, 7-1 GSC) are also in the 2023 playoffs as the No. 3 seed. Valdosta State hosts Limestone University on Saturday.

The winner of the Delta State-West Florida and Valdosta State-Limestone games will go head-to-head a week from Saturday in the second round.

Elsewhere in Super Region 2, undefeated Benedict University claimed the top spot and has a bye for the first round of the playoffs. Benedict will play the winner of fourth-seeded Lenoir-Rhyne University, a team UWF is well-familiar with, and Shepherd University.

Delta releases 2024 most-searched summer destinations

Delta is running its largest international schedule ever this summer – and our customers are ready to see the world.  

Ahead of Memorial Day, Delta released its second annual list of most-searched international destinations. Gathered from Delta.com search data*, the list reveals cities on customers’ minds for summer travel between May and August.  

The top 10 list reveals that many U.S. flyers are seeking different cultural experiences in faraway settings, with Athens experiencing the highest surge (248% increase) in searches from last year. The ever-popular cities of London , Paris and Rome topped the list, along with Dublin, Barcelona and Vancouver, Canada as new additions this year.  

Searches for these top 10 international destinations increased more than 150% from 2023, highlighting the strong demand for international travel following the airline’s 11 highest sales days in its history, all occurring this calendar year.  

Here’s a look at the full list:

On the domestic front, top-searched destinations (excluding Delta Hubs) include Las Vegas, Orlando, Miami and Honolulu, indicating a strong interest for sundrenched getaways and cities holding major sporting events this summer. 

With more than 290 destinations across more than 50 countries, other notable summer destinations include new, nonstop service to Venice , Tulum and Naples (starting in May). LAX-bound Delta flight makes emergency return to NYC after evacuation slide falls off plane

NEW YORK (KABC) -- A Delta flight bound for Los Angeles returned to New York's John F. Kennedy Airport on Friday morning after an emergency slide located above one of the plane's wings fell off the aircraft.

Delta Airlines Flight 520 declared an emergency and returned safely to the airport around 8:35 a.m. after the crew reported a vibration, the Federal Aviation Administration said.

After takeoff, the crew observed a "flight deck indication related to the right wing emergency exit slide, as well as a non-routine sound from near the right wing," Delta said in a statement.

"After the aircraft had safely landed and proceeded to a gate, it was observed that the emergency slide had separated from the aircraft," a spokesperson said. "Delta is fully supporting retrieval efforts and will fully cooperate in investigations"

There were 176 passengers, two pilots and five flight attendants on board.

Air traffic control audio obtained by Eyewitness News captured when the pilot communicated that the plane was heading back to JFK.

"Delta 520, yeah we got an indication that the right wing flight latch on the door, one of the latches is showing an open indication. So yeah, we plan on returning back to Kennedy and having them take a look at it," the pilot said.

"We are starting to get a little bit of a vibration on that right side. We're not declaring an emergency at this time, but we'd like to [ inaudible ] return back to Kennedy as soon as possible."

The flight returned to JFK Airport, the passengers were switched to a new plane, and their flight departed at 10:59 a.m. Eastern Time -- about three hours behind schedule.

"As nothing is more important than the safety of our customers and people, Delta flight crews enacted their extensive training and followed procedures to return to JFK," a Delta spokesperson said in a statement. "We appreciate their professionalism and our customers' patience for the delay in their travels."

The aircraft was removed from service while Delta teams evaluate the plane.

Passengers later landed safely at LAX just before 2 p.m.

Some of them said they heard the sound but weren't sure what it was. One passenger told Eyewitness News she was right above the right-side wing when the emergency slide fell off.

"It just sounded like things hitting the side of the plane ... something was not right," Ayoka Lucas said. "So we were all just looking around at each other knowing it didn't sound right."

The FAA said it will investigate.
