TORTOLA – Road Town Walking Guide, ferry and main features

Tortola is said by some to have the best beaches in the Caribbean. But there are no public buses. Taxis are generally expensive and it could be cheaper to rent a car and share if you plan to explore the island. We have found no free wifi unless with a purchase, that included in the port shops and cafe areas as well as bars walking around town. It is run by the British banking industry. The town is very small and many cruisers will take the transfer to Cane Garden Bay Beach, which is only a short stop on most Island Bus Tours. The beach is near the Rum Distillery, both seen on our Island Bus Tour Film . If walking around there is little in the port where you dock, and the dark, hidden, and rather politely titled FOLK MUSEUM, is a historic record of a dark era in our past. It shows how the island was taken with bloodshed, and then how slaves were shipped there. We have reprinted the passage from the romantic novel American Portrait because it does kind of nail the way you might feel.

  • BEACHES – Tortola is said to have some of the best beaches.
  • Cane Garden Bay is on the North Shore, with bars, shade, crystal clear water and many water sports available.
  • Nicloles Brewers Bay , is near Cane Bay, not advertised, and it is likely you might be the only ones there.
  • Brewers Bay is a quieter beach near a campground with s snack shop. It has shaded areas. Calm water preferred by serious snorkelers as it has a reef.
  • Josiah’s Bay is on the East and is a wide sandy beach. It has snack bars and is used by surfers in the winter when there is swell.
  • BrandyWine Bay is a half-moon white sand beach just east of Road Town with very calm water and shaded ‘bohios’ and restrooms. This is the Bay they wish to develop for Cruise Passengers as a centre, but the beach needs widening, and the road moved along with other things that residents have objected to before the plans have even been submitted. TBA.
  • Long Bay is a mile of white sand at Tortola’s West End.
  • Smuggler’s Cove : An off road experience to Smuggler’s Cove will find a treasure of a crescent-shaped beach with many Seagrape trees for shade.

About Us

Doris Visits is just a little hobby, and a way of helping people research ports and ships. It is our way of giving back as we are on the ships between 6 and 12 times a year as Guest Lecturers. The site is also supported by other guest lecturers.

Why Doris?  It was a character Jean played in a TV show and we started the port guides as a little spin-off. It took over. I mean, rode into town and said this is it.

Who is Jean ?  Jean is a West End and Broadway actress who now has her own one woman show called Royal Mistresses, which she performs at guilds and on ships. Hence, she cruises – a bit. She now presents TV and is known by many cruisers for her Doris Visits port guides.

Who is Stuart?   Featured in a clip in the 2024 Oscars – in the tribute to movie stuntmen – he was the Queen Alien in Aliens. Now, he points the iPhone at Jean when they go and explore ashore. He finished in movies as a director, and now writes cruise thrillers.

The grandchildren who sometimes travel and from their son Luke Aikman. He was the young Colin Firth in Fever Pitch and appeared in Freight. He is now a producer and business entrepreneur. Their daughter helped with the plot of the first four novels and is now writing with comedian Joe Wilkinson.  Laura Aikman is known for being the girlfriend in the Christmas Gavin and Stacey, and Dyan Cannon in Archie. Some grew up with her Saturday show, Mysti.

Tortola Island

The bvi’s capital isle.

As the archipelago’s largest island, the Capital isle of Tortola is the most likely starting point for your British Virgin Islands adventure.

Ancient ruins of historic settlements past coexist side-by-side with oceanside luxury resorts and modern townships here. Some of the most stunning white-sand beaches in the world line the shores of Tortola, inviting romantic strolls and cool dips in the shade of gently swaying palms. Elsewhere, the landscape is characterized by lush mountains, hidden harbours, and sweeping plains.

If you’re looking for more exciting escapades (such as water sports, fishing, or boating), then Tortola is more than up to accommodating you there, as well. Anchorages at Brandywine Bay, Soper’s Hole and Trellis Bay afford excellent origin points for sailing, while surfing Cane Garden Bay, or game fishing the North and South Drops are also popular. History buffs will also find much to explore here. Pay a visit to the 1780 Lower Estate Sugar Works Museum, Fort Burt, Mount Healthy Windmill, Callwood's Rum Distillery, J.R. O'Neal Botanic Gardens, Old Government House Museum and VI Folk Museum to learn about Tortola’s rich past.

When staying on Tortola, travelers have a range of options — from luxury resorts, to private villas, and even a scenic campground. Regardless of how you choose to spend your time here, you’ll find both the landscape and the locals to be warm, friendly, and hospitable.

Tortola Cruise Port Guide | 7 Best Things To Do On a Cruise

Road Town Tortola

Nestled in the heart of the Caribbean, Tortola, the largest and most populated of the British Virgin Islands, invites you with its sun-kissed shores and vibrant culture. Tortola is located east of Puerto Rico (USA) and St Thomas (USVI) and is a popular cruise stop in the Caribbean cruise itineraries.

Cruise ships dock at the Tortola cruise port in Road Town , nestled on the southern shores of the island. In this article, I’ll provide you with practical information on the Tortola cruise terminal and reveal the 7 best things to do in Tortola .

Visit also our cruise port guides to Nassau , San Juan , St Thomas , St Maarten , Puerto Plata , Grand Turk

Tortola Cruise Port

Cruise ships dock at Road Town Cruise Pier , tucked in a beautiful Baughers Bay. The port consists of two berths that can accommodate two large vessels simultaneously. In case the port is busy, the third vessel may anchor in the bay and tender passengers ashore to the Road Town Pier.

Tortola cruise ship terminal, also known as Tortola Pier Park , provides a duty-free shopping paradise, with a variety of stores selling jewelry, souvenirs, and local crafts.

Besides shops, the port area also has a passenger welcome center, a museum, tour booths, and a couple of restaurants and cafés, offering visitors the chance to try both local and foreign cuisines while taking in the views of Tortola’s tropical beauty. Make sure to try local rum and gin to complete your Tortola experience!

Getting around the island is easy, by local open-air safari buses with bench-style seating. These are available near your cruise terminal and offer rides to popular tourist attractions. US dollars are widely accepted, and make sure to bring some cash on you as taxi drivers and many businesses do not accept credit cards.

A boat/ferry boat is another popular option to get to the nearby islands of Virgin Gorda and Jost Van Dyke. There are two docks on Tortola – in Road Town and West End (a 30-minute drive from the cruise port). There will be detailed information on how to get to Virgin Gorda and Jost Van Dyke further in the article.

2. Cane Garden Bay

Indulge in the laid-back charm of Cane Garden Bay, a coastal gem within a short distance from the Tortola cruise port (around 20 minutes). This lovely bay is known for its pristine crescent-shaped beach, vibrant atmosphere, and a variety of activities that cater to different tastes.

For beach lovers, Cane Garden Bay offers a perfect escape with its soft, golden sands and clear turquoise waters. Take a stroll along the shoreline, bask in the warmth of the Caribbean sun, or engage in watersports like paddle boarding and snorkeling. The bay’s calm waters make it an ideal spot for both beginners and experienced water enthusiasts.

Music and culture also thrive in Cane Garden Bay, and one of the best things to do is immerse yourself in the local scene. Visit the beachside bars and restaurants where you can savor delicious Caribbean cuisine while enjoying live music performances. The laid-back atmosphere invites you to relax, socialize, and soak in the authentic island vibe.

To explore beyond the beach, I highly recommend taking a short hike to the Callwood Distillery , where you can learn about the traditional process of making rum. This historic distillery provides a fascinating glimpse into the island’s cultural heritage and offers tastings of their locally crafted spirits.

3. The Baths National Park (Virgin Gorda)

Embark on a ferry adventure to Virgin Gorda island and explore the natural marvels of The Baths , nestled within The Baths National Park. From Tortola Pier Park, you need to walk about 5-7 minutes to the ferry terminal and take one of the ferries to Virgin Gorda Island.

The ride takes 30 minutes and ferries run frequently, as this is one of the most popular locations and excursions on Tortola. Once on Virgin Gorda, taxis and local buses are readily available to transport you to The Baths National Park . You can check the ferry schedules at https://www.bviferries.com/

As you arrive on Virgin Gorda, you’ll spot the massive granite boulders that shape the landscape of The Baths. These colossal stones create a unique maze of grottoes, tunnels, and pools, providing an enchanting environment for exploration.

Must-try activities at The Baths include swimming in the crystal-clear waters surrounding the boulders and navigating through the natural corridors formed by these giant rocks. Snorkeling is a favorite pastime here, allowing you to discover the vibrant marine life. Don’t forget your water shoes for comfortable traversing over the boulders and through the shallow waters.

Devil’s Bay National Park is another national park connected with The Baths by the trail that starts at The Baths car park and ends at the Devil’s Bay. The hike is short – only 15 minutes – through massive granite boulders and lush vegetation. This horseshoe-shaped bay is one of Virgin Gorda’s most beautiful beaches and is known for its tranquil waters and perfect snorkeling.

The path provides a well-marked and moderately challenging route, making it suitable for people of all fitness levels. Make sure to wear suitable hiking shoes and bring water with you to remain hydrated on your hike.

Popular activities at Sage Mountain include not only the thrilling hike but also the opportunity to discover the unique ecosystem of the national park. Spend your day unwinding on the beach, basking in the sun, and taking refreshing dips in the Caribbean Sea. The tranquil ambiance of White Bay will surely give you the perfect setting for relaxation and rejuvenation.

The island is also famous for its iconic beach bars, with the Soggy Dollar Bar standing out as a must-visit destination. This iconic bar earned its name from the tradition of customers paying for drinks with wet banknotes after swimming ashore at the bar.

For those looking for a little adventure, consider hiking to the Bubbly Pool , a natural rock formation where waves crash into a shallow pool, creating bubbly bubbles. It’s a unique and delightful spot that adds a touch of adventure to your Jost Van Dyke experience.
