The wonderful Julia Holter was a big hit at Manchester Cathedral last night. I drove down from distant Cumbria via Liverpool to pick up a rocking chair, making it a 200+ mile journey and Julia made it entirely worthwhile. Her often free-form music cannot even loosely be called rock, but man don't she and her virtuoso band playing double bass, viola, sax and percussion, truly rock in the metaphorical sense. The set featured six of the pieces from her truly phenomenal award-winning album Have You In My Wilderness, including the magnificent Silhouette, and the beautifully disturbing Betsy On The Roof. Her takes on excerpts from her earliest albums were barely recognizable when compared with the originals, but utterly compelling, witnessing a true artist whose art is stunningly organic. She clearly loved the acoustics of the cathedral and so did we, her listeners, an appreciative audience with an extremely wide age-range. Sometimes billed as a multi-instrumentalist, over-modest Julia claims to only really play the keyboard and sing. Her performance was aurally and visually stunning, with the strong bond between her and the other musicians to the fore. All her four main albums are beautifully crafted, but experiencing her live for the first time added an extra dimension to my enjoyment of her music. A small gripe is that I would like to have heard her perform Night Song and How Long? and I very nearly chose to make another journey to Gateshead tonight, because I gather that she varies her set from night to night; in fact she made me wonder as she stood over the keyboard between songs, whether she was at that point deciding what to play next. Anyway I decided to stay in tonight and instead show my appreciation through the medium of this review, hoping that some of tonight's concert may turn up on YouTube. As you may gather, I've become something of a fan, and would recommend any waverers to go and see her while you can. And I haven't even mentioned her speculations on the motives of mice on Maxim's II; don't ask, actually do ask, it's on her album Loud City Song. I'm now considering a journey to Brighton next Monday...

I was really looking forward to seeing Julia Holter perform live. She has slowly become one of my favourite artists over the last year or so. Her latest album 'Loud City Song' is a career high with it's memerising vocal arrangements and uniquely original songwriting. I was particularly looking forward to seeing these songs being brought to live, backed by a full orchestra, S t a r g a z e, a Berlin based collective who were new to me.

Well, I really didn't think it possible, but the performance I witnessed surpased even my greatest hopes. Julia was fabulous. I was blown away by the intensity of the new compositions, and the magical chemistry that these very talented musicians had created. Incredibly they had only rehearsed on three occasions prior to the event. I find this astonishing as the timing was impecable. You would have thought they had been touring together for months. Everything flowed so naturally between the players, they were clearly enjoying every second of the event, as were the audience who were in rapture throughout.

What makes Julia Holter so special to me is her childlike wonder with the beauty of music. She is striving to create sounds that are new and wonderful and exciting, whilst also respecting the old methods of classic songwriitng along the way. I can't define her music, it is beyond bland definition or description. It is just quite simply divine, and I implore you to look her up if you get the chance. You will be in for a real treat!

Although Julia Holter has only been singing and performing professionally since 2011, she has already released 3 full length studio albums, that have all achieved critical acclaim. Holter has a musical background, training at Arts college, and therefore was set in good stead for the launch of her career.

Her songs buzz with tension, the powerful chords and melodies played by her band leave you hanging on the edge of your seat, longing for the narrative to unfold. Her stage presence is humbling and her suspended voice hangs in the air long after she’s finished singing. She sat at her stool and was chatting to the audience in the intimate venue like we were all old friends, she really showed her appreciation for everyone’s support, and thanked people countless times.

She played tracks from her older albums as well as her newer tracks, which added a really nice variety to the evening. She spoke between her songs enough to give the audience a little insight to her lyrics, but not too much to bore you. She’s got it sorted really, the perfect balance of ballads, with her more folky sound. She really encouraged us to sing along with some of the well known songs, which was a lovely touch.

Julia Holter's latest recording "Have You in my Wilderness" quickly found it's way from lavish praise and into many best of 2015 lists. I always enjoyed her recordings and loved how her band Julia Holter — keyboard, vocals

Dina Maccabee — viola, vocals

Corey Fogel — drums, vocals

Devin Hoff — bass

supported the new recording that left all of us wanting more; a great sign of a successful concert. All of this took place at The Great Hall on March 4th, 2016 to a sold out crowd. If you loved the new recording, then this would be the best possible compliment in support of it.

It would have been nice if there was a second show. I would have gone a second night. Julia's music is introspective, unique, wonderful, and a great departure from the everyday sounds. She mentioned she likes Toronto which hopefully means we could see her sooner than later. The concert was perfect beyond explanation! Perhaps, some of the older material could have been performed but that is hardly a complaint.

Extraordinary concert. I have enjoyed Julia Holter's recorded work, especially her latest 'breakthrough' album.

I wasn't prepared for this though. Superb, muscular renditions of these songs along with dips into her previous 'more difficult' work. Julia was playful, fun and generous and her band were extremely accomplished - showcased on a 10+ minute long 'Valdez'. She surprised everyone with a cover of 'Don't make me over', the Bacharach song, which proves she has a future as a lounge singer, should this particular venture fall through.

Difficult to recommend Julia highly enough.

Great singer, really loved the sound, the others as well, really good bass and drummer as well.

Julia looked as if she would be not really interested or enjoying the concert, however: I think it is how she is. She did play a good part. I hope people will not take wrong assumptions as if she would be not enjoying it, but pay attention on her play.

For me, I have listened too much to her album, my mistake, and she played almost only those from the new album (which is obvious, as it is her new album "tour").

Keep going on and make such music, the songs are really worth it.

Julia Holter played a thoughtful set with a great band at the Great Hall which included trumpet and bagpipes. Most of the presentation was selections from her latest effort. This was a great show that demonstrated musicality that is so approachable yet thought provoking.

I was very pleased with the show and as an added bonus, she signed LPs and assorted merchandise after the show which concluded around midnight. Five stars.

Well, Julia is great solo.

Julia Holter participating in a trio is not great...at all, which is very, very sad.

I mean, why is she even doing this, oh well, some questions are better left unanswered.

I still like here though - being among the audience of a very bad gig with her as a quasi-singer who is sometimes pushing some buttons will not change that. And she likes dogs too.

This was just a gorgeous performance in a great venue with a very respectful audience (for once). At times, the ethereal tipped over into the transcendent. I feel like the band would really benefit from a 5th member... Maybe a saxophonist. But that's barely a criticism. :)

EarlyCartographers’s profile image

This set was amazing. She played a broad range of songs from her 4 records, not just Have You in My Wilderness. The songs held up live really well. Her band was a 4-piece with her on keyboard, as well as a stand up bass, viola, and drums.

Julia Holter announces new album 'Something in the Room She Moves'

Julia Holter

Julia holter announces new album 'something in the room she moves', 9th january 2024.

Today Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter and composer Julia Holter announces her sixth studio album Something in the Room She Moves , out March 22 on Domino. Holter’s past work has often explored memory and dreamlike future, but her latest album resides more in presence: “There’s a corporeal focus, inspired by the complexity and transformability of our bodies,” she says. Her production choices and arrangements form a continuum of fretless electric bass pitches in counterpoint with gliding vocal melodies, while glissing Yamaha CS-60 lines entwine warm winds and reeds. “I was trying to create a world that’s fluid-sounding, waterlike, evoking the body’s internal sound world,” Holter says of her flowing harmonic universe.

Holter shares her new single “ Spinning ” alongside today’s announcement. “Spinning” is the album’s incantatory centerpiece; “What is delicious and what is omniscient?” she sings, “What is the circular magic I’m visiting?” Holter says, “It’s about being in the passionate state of making something: being in that moment, and what is that moment?”

“Spinning” comes via a video directed by Giraffe Studios .

“Spinning” follows the previously released single “ Sun Girl ,” hailed as “ a blissed-out blur, a meandering, neo-psychedelic ramble” (New York Times), “a swirling piece of psychedelia that smears the boundary between illusion and reality” (Pitchfork), and “an expansive, burbling, alluring oddity of the type that only Holter can make” (Stereogum).

Julia Holter has confirmed a European tour for April including London’s EartH Theatre ; additionally, fans can pre-order Something in the Room She Moves for a chance to hear the album in full and in Dolby Atmos surround sound at a private London location on February 1st alongside a Q&A with Julia Holter. Limited space available, winners will be informed with RSVP via email. Available to UK pre-orders only.

Julia holter something in the room she moves, album | 22nd march 2024.

“My heart is loud,” Julia Holter sings on her sixth album  Something in the Room She Moves , following an inner pulse. The Los Angeles songwriter’s past work has often explored memory and dreamlike future, but her latest album resides more in presence: “There’s a corporeal focus, inspired by the complexity and transformability of our bodies,” Holter says.

“What is delicious and what is omniscient?” she sings on “Spinning”, the album’s incantatory centerpiece. “What is the circular magic I’m visiting?” Or as Holter put it: “It’s about being in the passionate state of making something: being in that moment, and what is that moment?” She found it anew on  Something in the Room She Moves , singing in somatic frequencies.

This event will take place in EartH Theatre.

Julia Holter is a composer, performer, and recording artist based in Los Angeles. Her interest in sonic mysteries has led her to record in various settings--in her home, outside with a field recorder, and in recording studios—as well as to perform live, often with a focus on the voice and the space between language and babble. Holter’s music is multi-layered and texturally rich, often featuring an array of instruments played by an ensemble of creative musicians. She has amassed a body of work that explores melody within free song structures, atmosphere, and the impulses of the voice.

Julia released her latest album Aviary on Domino Records in 2018. Since the release of her previous albums Tragedy (2011) and Ekstasis (2012), Loud City Song (2013), and Have You In My Wilderness (2015), she has performed at venues and festivals throughout the world, including Europe, North & South America, Mexico, Asia and Australia. Julia was recently commissioned by the Chorus of Opera North to compose a score for the 1928 film The Passion of Joan of Arc, which she and the chorus performed to picture at the Barbican in 2022. She has also written music for the Los Angeles Philharmonic and scores for the TV show Pure (2019), the films Bleed for This (2016) and Never Rarely Sometimes Always (2020), and for the documentary on the singer Karen Dalton, In My Own Time (2020).

If you have any queries or would like more information about access at EartH, please contact DICE through the Help Centre.

EartH is a social enterprise committed to supporting new musicians, with music studios in the venue that are completely free for young artists in Hackney to use. Find out more here (https://earthackney.co.uk/about/studio-36/).

Julia Holter: Something in the Room She Moves review – the best track is the simplest

(Domino) Found sounds and touches of jazz enliven the American singer-songwriter’s woozy evocation of being present in changing times

C elebrated LA-based composer Julia Holter ’s last outing, 2018’s 90-minute Aviary , tried to reproduce the cognitive dissonance of living in recent times, harnessing medieval Occitan, bagpipes and a polyphony of other instruments to capture the restlessness of the mind. Six years on, Something in the Room She Moves is no less ambitious in its intent – to encapsulate presence and transformation – but feels more approachable. Beauty, rather than overstimulation, is foregrounded, with flutes and Holter’s own silken voice establishing airiness throughout these 10 tracks. The pandemic, new motherhood and the death of her young nephew are the contexts for this new work, which remixes a Beatles title to emphasise female agency.

Tracks such as Sun Girl confirm that Holter hasn’t entirely dispensed with pop, a talent evident on 2015’s Have You in My Wilderness . But here, the melodics are blithe and woozy, with Sun Girl recalling the mantric, 21st-century psychedelia of Animal Collective, and Spinning combining hydraulic beats and jazz flute with a chorus that tries but fails to nail down the ineffable. A plethora of found sounds and jazz inflections keep everything compelling. But the hovering, sustained and gliding elements miss the brave sensory overload of Aviary and the pop nous of Wilderness . The best track is the simplest: Meyou, a warped, minimal vocal meditation.

Julia Holter Announces New Album and Tour, Shares Video for New Song “Spinning”

Something in the room she moves due out march 22 via domino.

Julia Holter has announced a new album, Something in the Room She Moves , and shared a new song, “Spinning,” via a music video. She’s also announced some new tour dates. Something in the Room She Moves is due out March 22 via Domino. Juliana and Nicola Giraffe directed the “Spinning” video. Watch it below, followed by the album’s tracklist and cover artwork, as well as the tour dates.

Holter had this to say about “Spinning” in a press release: “It’s about being in the passionate state of making something: being in that moment, and what is that moment?”

“There’s a corporeal focus, inspired by the complexity and transformability of our bodies,” she says of the new album. “I was trying to create a world that’s fluid-sounding, water-like, evoking the body’s internal sound world.”

The album’s title was in part inspired by The Beatles song “Something” and its lyrics, “Something in the way she moves.” Holter, a lifelong Beatles fan, has been singing Beatles songs to her daughter at night.

Something in the Room She Moves features “Sun Girl,” a new song Holter shared in November that was one of our Songs of the Week .

Something in the Room She Moves is the follow-up to Aviary , her last regular new album, released six years ago. It was our Album of the Week and made the Top 10 in our Top 100 Albums of 2018 list .

Since then she has kept busy, including composing the score for Eliza Hittman’s 2020 film Never Rarely Sometimes Always and working with England’s Chorus of Opera North on a new live soundtrack to the 1928 silent film The Passion of Joan of Arc , which Holter wrote and performed. She’s also recently worked with Call Super, Beverly Glenn-Copeland, and Max Tundra.

Julia Holter announces new album, Something in the Room She Moves

Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter and composer Julia Holter has announced her sixth studio album, Something in the Room She Moves, and shares new single, "Spinning".

“Spinning” is the album’s incantatory centrepiece; “What is delicious and what is omniscient?” she sings, “What is the circular magic I’m visiting?” Holter says, “It’s about being in the passionate state of making something: being in that moment, and what is that moment?”

"Spinning" comes accompanied by a video directed by Giraffe Studios, and follows previous single, "Sun Girl" – Holter's first release in five years.

The title Something in the Room She Moves came to Holter spontaneously as she was naming the Logic project file for an early demo of what would become the album’s title track on her computer for the first time. Coincidentally, a few months later, she found herself mesmerized by the eight-hour Beatles documentary Get Back in 2021. Her titular phrase flips the gaze of the Beatles lyrics ( “Something in the way she moves…” ), where the woman is no longer passively observed, but actively augmenting space.

After a string of dream pop albums that established her searching voice in independent music – from 2012 breakthrough Ekstasis to Loud City Song and Have You in My Wilderness – Holter released the experimental Aviary in 2018. Since then, she has scored films such as Never Rarely Sometimes Always, performed a commissioned live score for The Passion of Joan of Arc with the Chorus of Opera North, and collaborated with her partner, the musician Tashi Wada, who plays synth and bagpipes on her new album.

Julia Holter has confirmed a European tour including London’s EartH Theatre on 9 April; additionally, fans can pre-order Something in the Room She Moves for a chance to hear the album in full and in Dolby Atmos surround sound at a private London location on 1 February alongside a Q&A with Julia Holter.

Will Young has reflected on a mortifying blunder he made when he met Julia Roberts for the first time.

Appearing on BBC ’s The One Show on Wednesday (24 April), the former Pop Idol star was quizzed by hosts Alex Jones and Jermaine Jenas about what stories he will be telling crowds on his forthcoming UK tour.

Young, 45, who recently opened up about the moment he confronted Simon Cowel l, revealed that he was left sweating and embarrassed after he made a joke that didn’t quite land the first time he met the Notting Hill actor.

The musician said: “I was singing at the LA BAFTAs. She was in the dressing room and I get a bit tongue-tied and I just was looking at her and thinking ‘oh god, that’s Julia Roberts.’”

“All I had in my head was [the Pretty Woman theme tune].”

“Then she said: ‘You’re the guy from American Idol ’ and I said: ‘No Pop Idol ’. Then I said: ‘Wouldn’t it be funny if it was called Pup Idol and everyone brought their puppies’.

“She just looked at me. I know. It’s really odd. Her assistant just moved her away. I’m actually sweating telling this story.

“I started sweating and the make-up artist was like ‘God, you’re sweating quite a lot’. And I said: ‘Yeah I know, I’m fine. It’s just so hot.’”

“It was just awful. But I think people need to hear these stories.”

Young has been reflecting on his 20-year-long career as he prepares to tour the UK promoting his forthcoming album Light It Up . Earlier this week, he told Elizabeth Day’s How To Fail podcast about a moment in his early career when he called out Simon Cowell for his judge’s scathing remarks on Pop Idol in 2002 .

Young, then 22, performed a rendition of The Doors’s “Light My Fire” on the first ever series of the singing competition.

Cowell called the performance “distinctly average”, and Young took the opportunity to call out the judge’s track record of giving aspiring singers brutal feedback.

Reflecting on that moment, Young said he knew he wanted to stand up to Cowell.

“I thought if you get a moment then people will remember you,” Young recalled. “And then I also knew that I really disliked that man. And I’d met him before on the This Morning boy band competition.”

“And I remember thinking I really don’t like that man, and I went to a school where I was surrounded by … quite unpleasant men. So, my radar for people who I perceive as unpleasant is quite on. And I just want to be careful.”

Young added that he thought Cowell needed to be “put in his place”.

“Because I had to sit and watch him make people cry for weeks, building up to my live performance in front of him,” he continued. “And I just thought, ‘No one’s telling this man. Why is no one telling him?’ And so I was like, ‘I’m going to tell him.’”
