Journey USA is the closest thing to ‘70s & ‘80s Journey music you’ll ever hear! Just ask Steve Perry, who once hired Journey USA’s lead singer to do vocal work on his solo album. Add the rest of the band—a keyboard player from Grammy-award winners Survivor, a guitarist who played and penned multiple hits for Great White in the ‘80s MTV era, a drummer who also toured with Great White, and a bassist who performs with Iron Butterfly's Mike Pinera—and you have Journey USA! The most talent-packed Journey tribute band available captures the signature sound of the supergroup with hits like Don’t Stop Believing, Open Arms, Separate Ways, and Any Way You Want It, every song executed with stunning precision! Since its inception, Journey USA has delivered high-energy performances to thousands of fans at casinos, fairs, festivals, private functions and corporate events, its members frequently appearing on AXS TV’s World’s Greatest Tribute Bands. Santa Fe Concert Series Includes Later Train, Taylor Swift Tribute

Rail runner adds friday night southbound to summer lineup.

journey tribute santa fe

Last summer, some Railyard Concert Series attendees visiting from Albuquerque would have only heard the final tunes from a moving train because the final southbound Rail Runner left at 9:05 pm on Fridays. This year, starting June 7, the Rail Runner will kick off a new partnership with Lensic360 and the Railyard Community Corporation for an additional Friday night southbound train that leaves at 10:05 pm.

“Not only will it increase access to Albuquerque,” Lensic360 Director Jamie Lenfestey tells SFR, “but I’m really hopeful that people will take the opportunity to utilize the train as a park-and-ride from the various Santa Fe stations.”

The Rail Runner has offered a 10:14 pm southbound train on Saturdays since last August, according to Allyne Clarke, marketing manager for Rio Metro Regional Transit, following community surveys that indicated a market for later transportation back to Albuquerque. Providing an extra hour on Friday, then, was a no-brainer.

“When they approached us about the concert series, we thought it was a great idea,” Clarke says. “We obviously did our research, but I think having something specific like a concert series helps. We were on board.”

Lensic360′s Railyard Concert Series has a fairly stacked lineup of Friday night shows this year, including electronic dance jam act Mexican Institute of Sound with Frontera Bugalú on June 7; reggae artist Hirie on June 21; and the annual Meow Wolf Monster Battle with electronica from The Polish Ambassador and many others. The org will also host its annual Santa Fe Salutes show featuring a plethora of local musicians covering one artist or band’s body of work. In the past, Santa Fe Salutes has tackled Prince, Tom Petty, Aretha Franklin, David Bowie, The Beatles and Elton John. This year’s honoree? Taylor Swift on Friday, Aug. 2.

“Santa Fe Salutes was rooted in honoring artists who passed away, but [former coordinator] Mikey Baker started the trend in recent years that we’re trying to honor living legends,” Santa Fe Salutes coordinator Andy Primm says. “Last year we did Elton, and this year…I don’t know that there’s a bigger living legend right now than Taylor Swift. It’s Taylor’s world, we’re just living in it.”

Primm doesn’t have a lineup for the show just yet, but says he hopes to attract younger musicians when the call for applicants goes out in the coming days.

“I’m looking forward to getting an education about Taylor,” Primm adds. “And something else I’m really excited about is that whoever wants to be a part of it, I want them to bring their own take. This is not going to be a karaoke show.”

Santa Fe Salutes also coincides with SFR’s Best of Santa Fe 2024 block party in the Railyard, so stay tuned for more details on that, too (and vote for your favorites this month).

Lenfestey, meanwhile, says in addition to helping train commuters, organizers for the Railyard Concert Series will also offer a bike valet service in June. He hopes live music might help to up Rail Runner engagement.

“I think it presents a fun opportunity for people to ride the train, possibly for the first time,” he posits.

Railyard Community Corporation officials are also glad about the slightly later train.

“We love that Lensic360′s free concerts at Railyard Plaza are more available to a broader audience thanks to our Rail Runner partnership,” says Director of Events & Marketing Ginny Sanders. “I just might drive to Albuquerque so I can experience it myself.”

Also on the docket, the Lensic360 Summer Movie Series kicks off in Railyard Park Saturday, June 1 with a screening of Greta Gerwig’s Barbie , with other films playing every other Saturday through the Aug. 24 screening of E.T. Good thing there’s that 10:14 train, huh? All concerts and movies are free to attend and begin at 7 pm.

My wife and I stayed here for a weekend. Upon arrival, the valet staff and receptionist were attentive and inviting (there is also charging for electric vehicles). We stayed in one of their bungalows which had a soaking tub and a backyard with a fireplace. The room was refreshing and clean throughout. We went to Lilians for breakfast and dinner and the food/service was fantastic. I would recommend booking an appointment at their spa as the signature massage was relaxing. The landscaping, architecture, and vintage pieces throughout was flawless and I would not hesitate to visit again, my wife and I had a great experience!

From starting at valet, to front desk, to throughout this property The staff is welcoming, amazing, friendly and attentive. As soon as you drive up to this Historic hotel, the grounds are manicured and absolutely breathtaking. We entered the lobby and were quickly greeted by the receptionist who briefly checked us in showing us to our room. The newly renovated rooms were designed with details that mixed historical with a touch of modern luxury. The beautiful hotel is situated within walking distance to the cute Santa Fe Town. We felt relaxed and made our stay one of the best we've had in San Diego. We stayed mid weekday with a fair rate seeing how The hotel is newly renovated and are completing their renovations throughout the hotel We hope to return soon with a similar experience. Beautiful stay in a quaint area with absolutely gorgeous grounds. Cannot wait to return!

This venue / hotel/ restaurant and service is top notch. I am so impressed with their new remodel and ambiance. We stayed in the bungalows and wow. What an experience. The lobby is a mix with modern elegance meets European vibes. Add a touch of spunk and ultimate chic ness and you have an overall experience. I loved that the front desk clerk knew my name when I went back to ask a question. (They remembered) and when I would walk past, they would ask if I was enjoying my stay. But keep in one that as a wedding planner, planning a wedding the time I stayed, I was obsessed with Tim St Julien and Molly Nelson and how they managed the entire event. They were always around and happy to see our team. They took such great care of our clients and we loved them for that. I am excited to be a guest again and plan many beautiful weddings at this perfect venue. PS: make sure to enjoy the stone salad in the restaurant. Yummmm!

Beautiful property, outstanding service, food was delicious and spa treatments were amazing.

What a beautiful and peaceful hideaway. The spa is beautiful and the grounds feel like you are in Santa Barbara!

Not a fan of the main valet attendant. Rude, condescending and flippant. The other valets were kind and considerate but management take note not a good look for your reopening. I will review Lillian's restaurant separately.

Absolutely love this place, the ambiance, the view, the food was good, small portions but tasty and my champagne with berries was amazing!

They have done a beautiful job renovating unfortunately they have not done a great job training their bar staff to be polite towards their customers and after having the same waitress being super rude 3 separate times. I will not try again, I am will not return.

Hello again it's Dylan White with the 2023 Raters. Tonight we found ourselves at the Rancho Santa Fe in which might have been a mistake , To begin with the service it took an absurd amount of time to get drinks and longer to get our food. We rated service a 3.7. For the atmosphere it was very nice for a Saturday and the Christmas vibe was great earring a 4.5/5. For food my wagu sliders were amazing along with the salmon and fries also earning a 4.5/5 too. And finally the drink I ordered was great earning a 4.7/5. For the grand total the Rancho Santa Fe Inn earned a total of 17/20 #mid #lucky If they are lucky we might come back. This is the official Dylan White, Peace

Photo of Amanda D.

Hey, it's the historic Inn so even the ugly lipstick they've recently put on it can't take away from its old world glamour. The service is some of the worst I've seen not just in Rancho, but in all of San Diego. Ordered a bottle of wine and fries and once that was delivered, literally that's the last I ever saw of the server. An hour and a half later a manager came up and asked how things were and I had to say can I get my check? That was delivered quickly followed by demands from the perviously non existent server to pay because she wanted to get off shift. Rude. Also, note to self, that the wine I bought by the bottle would have been less expensive if I had bought by the glass. Just a really horrible experience end to end.

  • Khabarovsk Krai

Administrative divisions

Heavy industry, demographics, ethnic groups, settlements, sister relations, external links.

Being dominated by the Siberian High winter cold, the continental climates of the krai see extreme freezing for an area adjacent to the sea near the mid-latitudes, but also warm summers in the interior. The southern region lies mostly in the basin of the lower Amur River , with the mouth of the river located at Nikolaevsk-on-Amur draining into the Strait of Tartary , which separates Khabarovsk Krai from the island of Sakhalin . The north occupies a vast mountainous area along the coastline of the Sea of Okhotsk , a marginal sea of the Pacific Ocean . Khabarovsk Krai is bordered by Magadan Oblast to the north; Amur Oblast , Jewish Autonomous Oblast , and the Sakha Republic to the west; Primorsky Krai to the south; and Sakhalin Oblast to the east.

The population consists of mostly ethnic Russians , but indigenous people of the area are numerous, such as the Tungusic peoples ( Evenks , Negidals , Ulchs , Nanai , Oroch , Udege ), Amur Nivkhs , and Ainu . [10]

Khabarovsk Krai shares its borders with Magadan Oblast in the north; with the Sakha Republic and Amur Oblast in the west; with the Jewish Autonomous Oblast , China ( Heilongjiang ), and Primorsky Krai in the south; and is limited by the Sea of Okhotsk in the east. In terms of area, it is the fourth-largest federal subject within Russia. Major islands include the Shantar Islands .

Taiga and tundra in the north, swampy forest in the central depression, and deciduous forest in the south are the natural vegetation in the area. The main rivers are the Amur , Amgun , Uda , and Tugur , among others. There are also lakes such as Bokon , Bolon , Chukchagir , Evoron , Kizi , Khummi , Orel , and Udyl , among others. [11]

Khabarovsk Krai has a severely continental climate with its northern areas being subarctic with stronger maritime summer moderation in the north. In its southerly areas, especially inland, annual swings are extremely strong, with Khabarovsk itself having hot, wet, and humid summers which rapidly transform into severely cold and long winters, where temperatures hardly ever go above freezing. This is because of the influence of the East Asian monsoon in summer and the bitterly cold Siberian High in winter. The second-largest city of Komsomolsk-on-Amur has even more violent temperature swings than Khabarovsk, with winter average lows below −30   °C (−22   °F) , but in spite of this, avoiding being subarctic because of the significant heat in summer.

The main mountain ranges in the region are the Bureya Range , the Badzhal Range (highest point 2,221 metres (7,287   ft) high, the Gora Ulun ), the Yam-Alin , the Dusse-Alin , the Sikhote-Alin , the Dzhugdzhur Mountains , the Kondyor Massif , as well as a small section of the Suntar-Khayata Range , the Yudoma-Maya Highlands , and the Sette-Daban in the western border regions. The highest point is 2,933 metres (9,623   ft) high, Berill Mountain . [12] [13]

There are a number of peninsulas along the krai's extensive coast, the main ones being (north to south) the Lisyansky Peninsula , Nurki Peninsula , Tugurskiy Peninsula , and the Tokhareu Peninsula .

The main islands of Khabarovsk Krai (north to south) are Malminskiye Island , the Shantar Islands , Menshikov Island , Reyneke Island (Sea of Okhotsk) , Chkalov Island , Baydukov Island , and the Chastye Islands . The island of Sakhalin (Russia's largest) is administered separately as Sakhalin Oblast , along with the Kuril Islands .

The charts below detail climate averages from various locations in the krai. Khabarovsk is set near the Chinese border at a lower latitude far inland, while Komsomolsk-on-Amur being further downstream on the Amur river at a higher latitude. Sovetskaya Gavan and Okhotsk are coastal settlements in the deep south and far north, respectively.

According to various Chinese and Korean records, the southern part of Khabarovsk Krai was originally occupied by one of the five semi-nomadic Shiwei , the Bo Shiwei tribes, and the Black Water Mohe tribes living, respectively, on the west and the east of the Bureya and the Lesser Khingan ranges.

In 1643, Vassili Poyarkov 's boats descended the Amur , returning to Yakutsk by the Sea of Okhotsk and the Aldan River , and in 1649–1650, Yerofey Khabarov occupied the banks of the Amur. The resistance of the Chinese, however, obliged the Cossacks to quit their forts, and by the Treaty of Nerchinsk (1689), Russia abandoned its advance into the basin of the river.

Although the Russians were thus deprived of the right to navigate the Amur River, the territorial claim over the lower courses of the river was not settled in the Treaty of Nerchinsk of 1689. The area between the Uda River and the Greater Khingan mountain range (i.e. most of Lower Amuria) was left undemarcated and the Sino-Russian border was allowed to fluctuate. [20] [21]

Later in the nineteenth century, Nikolay Muravyov conducted an aggressive policy with China by claiming that the lower reaches of the Amur River belonged to Russia . In 1852, a Russian military expedition under Muravyov explored the Amur, and by 1857, a chain of Russian Cossacks and peasants had been settled along the whole course of the river. In 1858, in the Treaty of Aigun , China recognized the Amur River downstream as far as the Ussuri River as the boundary between Russia and the Qing Empire, and granted Russia free access to the Pacific Ocean. [22] The Sino-Russian border was later further delineated in the Treaty of Peking of 1860 when the Ussuri Territory (the Maritime Territory ), which was previously a joint possession, became Russian. [23]

Khabarovsk Krai was established on 20 October 1938, when the Far Eastern Krai was split into the Khabarovsk and Primorsky Krais . [24] Kamchatka Oblast , which was originally subordinated to the Far Eastern Krai, fell under the Jurisdiction of Khabarovsk Krai, along with its two National Okrugs, Chukotka and Koryak . In 1947, the northern part of Sakhalin was removed from the Krai to join the southern part and form Sakhalin Oblast . In 1948, parts of its southwestern territories were removed from the Krai to form Amur Oblast . In 1953, Magadan Oblast was established from the northern parts of the Krai and was given jurisdiction over Chukotka National Okrug, which was originally under the jurisdiction of Kamchatka oblast. In 1956, Kamchatka Oblast became its own region and took Koryak National Okrug with it. The Krai took its modern form in 1991, just before the USSR's collapse when the Jewish Autonomous Oblast was created within its territory. On 24 April 1996, Khabarovsk signed a power-sharing agreement with the federal government, granting it autonomy. [25] This agreement would be abolished on 12 August 2002. [26]

Khabarovsk Krai Administration building Zdanie administratsii Khabarovskogo kraia.JPG

During the Soviet period, the high authority in the oblast was shared between three persons: The first secretary of the Khabarovsk CPSU Committee (who, in reality, had the biggest authority), the chairman of the oblast Soviet (legislative power), and the Chairman of the oblast Executive Committee (executive power). Since 1991, CPSU lost all the power, and the head of the Oblast administration, and eventually the governor, was appointed/elected alongside elected regional parliament .

The Charter of Khabarovsk Krai is the fundamental law of the krai. The Legislative Duma of Khabarovsk Krai is the regional standing legislative (representative) body. The Legislative Duma exercises its authority by passing laws, resolutions, and other legal acts and by supervising the implementation and observance of the laws and other legal acts passed by it. The highest executive body is the Krai Government, which includes territorial executive bodies, such as district administrations, committees, and commissions that facilitate development and run the day to day matters of the province. The Krai Administration supports the activities of the Governor , who is the highest official and acts as guarantor of the observance of the Charter in accordance with the Constitution of Russia .

On 9 July 2020, the governor of the region, Sergei Furgal , was arrested and flown to Moscow. The 2020 Khabarovsk Krai protests began on 11 July 2020, in support of Furgal. [27]

Khabarovsk Krai is the most industrialized territory of the Far East of Russia, producing 30% of the total industrial products in the Far Eastern Economic Region.

The machine construction industry consists primarily of a highly developed military–industrial complex of large-scale aircraft- and shipbuilding enterprises. [28] The Komsomolsk-on-Amur Aircraft Production Association is currently among the krai's most successful enterprises, and for years has been the largest taxpayer of the territory. [28] Other major industries include timber-working and fishing , along with metallurgy in the main cities. Komsomolsk-on-Amur is the iron and steel centre of the Far East; a pipeline from northern Sakhalin supplies the petroleum-refining industry in the city of Khabarovsk . In the Amur basin, there is also some cultivation of wheat and soybeans . The administrative centre , Khabarovsk, is at the junction of the Amur River and the Trans-Siberian Railway .

The region's mineral resources are relatively underdeveloped. Missing the Muppets? Tribute concert celebrates work of Jim Henson with local theater artist Tyler Tafolla

Tyler Tafolla, composer, lyricist, and performer, pictured with one of the puppets from his latest show

Local theater artist Tyler Tafolla is the producer, director, and performer in his latest show, celebrating the work of Jim Henson, creator of “The Muppets,” “Fraggle Rock,” and the characters on “Sesame Street.” His show, “Movin’ Right Along, a Tribute Concert,” is May 25 in City Heights.

Tyler Tafolla was clear on what he wanted for his birthday last year and made it happen — a live table reading with friends of one of his favorite Muppet movies, “Muppet Treasure Island.” Not much of a surprise for the composer, lyricist, writer, and passionate fan of musical theater.

“We all sat at a long table on a makeshift stage in my friend’s backyard. We had scripts and pirate outfits on, and we invited a bunch of friends,” he says. “Our group of eight performed all the characters, sang all the songs, and it was just a very silly evening where we could all laugh and celebrate one of our favorite movies, all our favorite parts and lines, and just put on a show for our friends.”

Later, one of his friends said they wished they could all put on their own Muppet show. That was the beginning of an idea that led to “Tyler Tafolla Presents: Movin’ Right Along, a Tribute Concert” at 8 p.m. May 25 at the City Heights Performance Annex. It’s a cabaret-style concert featuring his and the cast’s favorite songs from Jim Henson’s extensive library of classics, he says.

Tafolla, 29, grew up in Ocean Beach and lives there today, with his wife, Megan, and their daughter, Lily. He earned a bachelor’s degree in musical theater from the AMDA (American Musical and Dramatic Academy) in Los Angeles, where he wrote and produced his first musical, “Scott Robbins and the Traveling Show,” which he later staged at Diversionary Theatre in 2022 . He took some time to talk about the immense creative influence of Jim Henson, the magic of musicals, and the animated films he can quote by heart (and recorded evidence of on TikTok, @tyleratafolla ).

Q: “Movin’ Right Along” is a celebration of the life and work of Jim Henson, the famed creator behind “The Muppets,” “Fraggle Rock,” and the characters on “Sesame Street.” Can you talk about the inspiration behind creating this tribute show?

A: I have been a fan of The Muppets since childhood and far into adulthood. Growing up as an energetic child with a lot of imagination, an inability to stand still for very long, and a desire to make people laugh, I felt right at home when watching The Muppets. I have a huge passion for the creations of Jim Henson. They have transcended generations with their universal humor, relatable characters, and timeless messages. No matter what age, many of us have experienced or have been impacted by The Muppets in some way; whether it be learning our numbers and letters on “Sesame Street,” to learning to follow our dreams watching “The Muppet Movie,” to learning how to get along with those who are different than us on “Fraggle Rock,” some of us have learned some of our greatest life lessons from these characters made of fabric and felt. It has made an impact on many of us, and I wanted to make an evening of theatre that could celebrate that.

What I love about Ocean Beach...

My family is very close and the neighborhood does play a huge part in that. I’m currently living with my wife and daughter in the house I grew up in. My brother is my next-door neighbor, and my parents are just down the street from us. We try and do family dinners every other week or so at my parents’. My parents always lived in Ocean Beach/Point Loma. My dad’s grandparents settled here in the ‘40s and never left. So much of who I am was formed by living in San Diego. It’s a part of me and I’m incredibly grateful to be here.

Q: I’ve read that you grew up in Ocean Beach and that your parents were creatives who worked with a local youth theater company and also produced and directed local television programs. Can you talk about what it was like growing up in that kind of environment and how that shaped your own creativity and professional pursuits?

A: Growing up in that kind of environment gave me the permission to dream big. There was never really a time where I felt unsupported when it came to what I wanted to do when I grew up. My parents were always great at making me feel supported in any of my creative endeavors. I feel very privileged to have had that growing up. I think the big difference and the key to all of that is that they made sure I knew it’d be hard work. They made sure I knew there might not be immediate success or instant achievements. There definitely have been plenty of hard days, but I think what has kept me going more than anything is the joy—the joy I feel when I’m doing something I absolutely love. I want to feel that as often as I can. There’s nothing for me like being a part of the arts. Outside of my family, it’s the thing that brings me the most joy and that’s how I know I’m doing what I’m supposed to do.

Q: In an interview with Shoutout LA , you talked about the power you found in musicals to inspire hope, redefine good and evil, and offer escape and healing. Are you comfortable sharing a personal healing experience a musical(s) provided for you?

A: A couple of weeks back, I got the chance to see some wonderfully talented colleagues and friends perform in “Into the Woods” at The Moonlight in Vista. That same week, I was adopting my daughter (which had been a five-year journey), and at the end of the musical, the company sings the lyrics, “Careful the things you say, children will listen.” This is a show I had heard throughout high school and college and was very aware of and knew quite well at this point. That song, specifically, brought on all new meanings and feelings for me during this new stage of my life. Without preparation, I found that tears just began flowing down my face and could not be stopped. When I first started dating my wife Megan and we knew we were going to be married and that I would become Lily’s father, I always questioned how I could possibly parent and guide and make sense of the world to this child when, during that time, I felt so lost about my own understanding of the world. This particular show grapples with these exact topics and I found myself continuing to be reminded, throughout the performance, that people make mistakes, but that does not make you bad; that children will look to you for where to go, and that “no one is alone.” It was a healing, comforting, and reassuring experience for me.

Q: When you think about the kind of effect you would like “Movin’ Right Along” to have on its audience on May 25, what comes to mind for you?

A: In an interview once, Jim Henson said, “At some point in my life, I decided, rightly or wrongly, that there are many situations in this life that I can’t do much about. So, what I should do is concentrate on the situations that my energy can affect.” I find myself feeling very connected to this quote at a very pivotal time in the world we live in today. In these times we live in, there is so much we can do when it comes to staying aware to what is going on in the world—getting out there and voting, speaking out about what’s right, being there for our fellow humans. There is also a whole heck of a lot that I cannot control, as much as I want to. So, I begin to ask myself, “What am I capable of? Just me.” I am capable of spreading love. I am capable of sharing joy with people. I am capable of making people laugh, even if it is just for a moment, even if it’s the first laugh they’ve had in a long time. I am capable of providing that to people who may desperately need that right now. Though it may seem small in comparison to other things, I’ve found that even the smallest acts of positive human interaction or community joy have made all the difference in my life. So, I hope during our performance, I can provide a safe space for people to laugh, to smile, and to sing along, just like Jim did for so many generations of people.

Q: What is the best advice you’ve ever received?

A: I had a professor in college tell us that, “Luck is preparation meets opportunity.” That always stuck with me.

Q: What is one thing people would be surprised to find out about you?

A: I can quote all of “Toy Story” and “The Emperor’s New Groove” by heart (and I did record myself doing both of those movies in their entirety on my TikTok).

Q: Please describe your ideal San Diego weekend.

A: OK, do yourself a favor, save up the extra cash and rent a pontoon for the day and go out on Mission Bay, blasting that yacht-rock playlist you’ve been saving for a special occasion. There are so many favorite spots though, it’s really tough. Any of the Consortium Holdings restaurants or bars (Polite Provisions, Raised by Wolves, etc.), you’ll have a great time. Rocky’s in Pacific Beach is also a fave, as well as Grass Skirt. I mean, you’ve got do Hodads in O.B., too, right? A Padres game and the zoo, of course. Oh, and do yourself another favor and make sure to see Cassie B and her band at Moonshine Beach to kick off your weekend right. Go forth and enjoy!

These Russian stone carvings date back to 12,000 BC. WHAT??!

With its gracious, broad and tree-lined boulevards, well maintained turn of the 19th to 20th century buildings and a lively riverfront, the city of Khabarovsk is often called the most European city in Asia. Nothing in the tranquil city hints of a history that goes beyond the middle of the 19th century, but a short road trip along the Amur River is enough to unfurl a treasure trove of petroglyphs (prehistoric rock carvings) that are believed to date back to 12,000 BC.

Khabarovsk's city center

Khabarovsk's city center

The Khabarovsk Krai, which has about 789,000 square kilometers of territory, is one of the most sparsely populated places on the planet. These vast swathes of emptiness are visible when one drives on the highway that connects Khabarovsk with the industrial city of Komsomolsk-on-Amur.

The Nanai village of Sikachi-Alyan on the Amur River

75 kilometers north of Khabarovsk and just off the highway and on the right bank of the Amur is the Nanai village of Sikachi-Alyan, where the petroglyphs are located. Residents call the village the ‘home of angry spirits’, thanks to the mystical occurrences that many have claimed to witness there.

History on the rocks

The area has about 200 petroglyphs, with a significant number being well preserved. The petroglyphs are easily accessible, as they are near the water’s edge on basalt boulders.

The best time to visit the area is actually early or late winter (despite the brutal cold), since the overflowing waters of the Amur hide them in the warmer months. Floods and ice floes have also caused considerable damage to many of the petroglyphs. Locals say some of the boulders have been turned upside down.

The carvings that date from different periods depict hunting scenes, animals, such as elk, horses and mammoths, shamans and shamanic masks and even people sitting in boats.

Russia’s Far East is believed to have been one of the last habitats of mammoths before they became extinct. Among the best-preserved petroglyphs of Sikachi-Alyan, there is one engraving that clearly depicts a mammoth, while another shows a mammoth with an unknown creature. There’s also a large depiction of a beast with a tail.

Svetlana Onenko, a local historian who is also the curator of the indigenous people’s ethnographic museum and cultural center in Sikachi-Alyan, says the very existence of the mammoth depictions proves that the petroglyphs date back to around 12,000 BC. She adds that the ancient dwellers of this area probably also hunted mammoths.

The older images, dating to the Paleolithic age, were carved out using stone tools. It should be noted that some archaeologists argue that the wild horses depicted in some of the petroglyphs did not exist in the Amur Region even in the Neolithic age.

The newer carvings, including those of shamans and shamanic masks were used with more modern tools. These images are sacred to the Nanai and other indigenous groups who live in the village with a total population of just 300. Onenko says the members of the indigenous community are descended from the people who carved out the petroglyphs. Some European anthropologists, however, believe that the indigenous people were more recent settlers, who moved to the area around 2,000 years ago from Manchuria.

An abode of Shamanism

Neo-Shamanists visit the area from different parts of the world and take part in rituals, which some suspect as being influenced by a cult. Such is the belief in Shamanism in this area that the museum, which has a large number of indigenous artefacts, crafts and ancient Chinese coins, keeps its Shamanic objects in a designated space that is ritually blessed. “Shamanic objects are believed to possess a powerful (and potentially dangerous) energy,” Onenko says.

Locals claim to spot mystic occurrences near the so-called Starukha (Eng.: “old lady”) rock formation. According to indigenous legends, human beings did not die at one point of time, but their population grew so large that there wasn’t enough food for everyone. So the earth’s spirits decided that people, like animals, would also have to die.

The Starukha was apparently the first human being to face death and ended up turning into that big (and apparently haunted) rock.

First Russian visitor

While the Nanai and other indigenous groups were aware of the existence of the petroglyphs for centuries, the outside world came to know of them only in 1859, a year after the foundation of the city of Khabarovsk.

This “discovery” was made by Richard Maack, a geographer, naturalist and explorer who set out on an expedition of the Amur and Ussuri valleys. Maack, who was born in the Russian Empire’s Baltic governorate of Livonia, studied natural sciences at the University of St. Petersburg and undertook several expeditions to Siberia and the Russian Far East in the 1850s.

Maack’s main area of interest was botany and six previously unknown plants that he collected by the Amur were named after him. His expedition north of the newly-founded Khabarovsk led him to Sikachi-Alyan, where he spotted the petroglyphs. There are less than a handful of surviving copies of Maack’s book titled, ‘Travel on the Amur river made by order of the Siberian department of the Emperor’s Russian Geographical Society in 1855’, which contains a wealth of information.

Russian archaeologists, scientists and historians took a great interest in the petroglyphs in the 20th century. In the 1930s, archaeologist Nikolai Kharlamov photographed them in detail. Three decades later, ethnographer and historian Alexei Okladnikov went on several expeditions to the area and wrote about the petroglyphs in detail in two books. His findings suggest that the artwork of Sikachi-Alyan had some resemblance to its counterparts from South East Asia, Polynesia and Australia.

The petroglyphs of Sikachi-Alyan are now among the most visited sites in Khabarovsk Krai. The Russian federal government was declared the legal owner of the petroglyphs in 2018 and efforts are underway to better preserve them, as well get the rock formations listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
