5 Reasons to Visit The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium
There are so many reasons why you should visit the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium. Here are the top 5.
1. Conservation — Manatee Coast Exhibit
At first glance, the Manatee Coast Exhibit looks like a regular zoo exhibit. But it’s not. It’s actually a Manatee Rescue and Rehabilitation facility. The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium participates in the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Manatee Rescue and Rehabilitation Program .
The exhibit opened in 1999 and has housed 21 manatees during that time. The ultimate goal of the program is to release the animals back into the wild. Once released, the manatees are tagged, tracked, and monitored as part of the program.
2. Family-Friendly Fun at The Barn
Bob Evans Farms My Barn allows the whole family to interact with domesticated animals like goats, sheep, chickens, and cows. You’ll get up close and personal with these animals and have the opportunity to brush or feed them (or give them a scratch between the toes)!
3. Keep The Kids Entertained — Rides and Playgrounds
The kids will not run out of things to do at the Columbus, Ohio Zoo . There are 3 separate playgrounds, a boat ride, train ride, carousel, and pony and camel rides. The 4-D Theater shows 8 to 12 minute movies in 4-D, and Stingray Bay allows you to get up close with beautiful rays.

4. Heart of Africa — Transport Yourself To An African Savanna
This exhibit is just plain awesome! The main area of the exhibit really makes you feel like you are on an African savanna. This large exhibit spans 43 acres and features giraffes, lions, zebras, gazelle, ostrich, wildebeest, vervet monkeys, and cheetahs.
The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium is involved in the Ewaso Lions project to promote conservation in Africa. This project focuses on Kenya’s lions and other large carnivores by promoting peaceful coexistence between animals and people. While enjoying Heart of Africa, try taking a camel ride, feeding a giraffe (designated times), or have lunch with a view at the Mapori restaurant.
This exhibit is seasonal and is closed throughout the winter months. But you should definitely check it out if you’re visiting Columbus in the summer .
5. Jack Hanna — America’s Favorite Zookeeper
Jack Hanna was hired as the director of the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium in 1978. Since then he has helped transform the zoo into a world-class education, conservation, and recreation facility.
He first appeared on the Late Show with David Letterman in 1985 and has been educating viewers and zoo guests about these amazing animals ever since. He is still involved in the zoo and his presence is undeniable as you explore.

Besides helping you locate the animal enclosures, a map will also help navigate visitor facilities such as restrooms, restaurants, picnic areas, lockers, nursing stations, ATMs, souvenir shops, etc.
Maps are helpful for families who may want to view their favorite animals and prepare an itinerary in advance.
You can download and print Columbus Zoo’s layout in advance.
The two major food joints at the zoo – Congo River Market Food Court and Mapori Restaurant – serve sumptuous food with amazing vibes.
Congo River Market Food Court
Congo River Market has indoor seating with air con in the summer and heating in the winter.
It offers cheeseburgers, pizza, fresh salads, deli sandwiches, and kids’ meals.
Mapori Restaurant
The Mapori Restaurant in the Heart of Africa region serves food with a view of the African Lion habitat.
The menu has Harvest Pizzeria, flame-grilled baby back ribs, pulled pork sandwiches, chicken tenders, and fresh garden salads.
Besides these two food joints, the zoo has Lakeside Grill and several smaller cafes, ice cream joints, cake shops, and specialty carts.
Guests can take lunch/snacks to the zoo, but you cannot take straws and alcohol inside the zoo.

Columbus Zoo's 'Unextinct' brings extinct and endangered animals to all ages
W hen the sun goes down at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, animals not usually seen there come to life, some of them for the first time in centuries.
"Unextinct," the zoo's new interactive digital experience , is composed of 15 areas where projected illusions of extinct species and critically endangered critters swim, jump, frolic, fly and roam.
A scattered selection of hardy souls braved the bitter cold on Thursday night to walk through the wildlife wonderland.
"It really offers something different to do," zoo guest Liz Gruhalla, of Columbus, said.
Eggs, Paws and Claws at the zoo: Where to find Easter egg hunts in the Columbus area
The display, which debuted on March 14, drew more than 1,000 guests on its opening weekend, according to Anthony Sabo, the zoo's vice president of operations and guest services.
"(The experience) is the first of its kind in Ohio and the second in the United States," Sabo said. "It's a completely different way to see the zoo, a totally different vibe than what the zoo usually has."
The immersive event will be open from 7:30-10:30 p.m. on select Thursdays (March 21 and March 28), Fridays and Saturdays through April 6, after which it will run Fridays and Saturdays through April 27.
When guests arrive, they are greeted by the Living Water display at the central pond, where ghost-like visions of coelacanths , sawtooth sharks, humpback whales and other underwater denizens soar through the air, an effect achieved with a semi-translucent aqua screen.
The 14 other "worlds" in "Unextinct" include Arachnoglitch, an exhibit of eight-legged crawlies; Soaring Panorama, a world of long-extinct birds; and an ultraviolet art tunnel where African and Asian elephants , a Javan green magpie and other winged creatures, vultures and more burst from the scene in DayGlo colors.
The ground-breaking technological wonder is the work of Mangolin Creative , a Los Angeles-based studio specializing in immersive experiential design.
Mangolin co-founder Morgan Lee Richardson said "Unextinct" was six years in the making, shifting and morphing before it was unveiled at the Sacramento Zoo last year.
Zoo opens elephant lab: Lab at Columbus Zoo and Aquarium aims to detect and prevent deadly elephant virus
"'It was built off the notion that animals perceive the world differently than we do," Richardson said, adding that besides blending art and entertainment, "Unextinct" is meant to call attention to global wildlife conservation .
The installation is indeed equal parts entertaining, educational and environmentally edifying, with fact-filled narratives accompanying the visuals at each stop.
Though the project is his baby, Richardson admitted he was slightly biased when he selected the species to feature in "Unextinct."
"I was playing favorites when I picked the animals I wanted to include. I also wanted to choose animals you would not see in a zoo," he said, listing the hellbender salamander among his favorites.
Richardson said public reaction to "Unextinct" thus far has been positive. "It feels great. It's always fantastic to see and hear the guests chattering," he said.
Sabo said the experience has attracted guests from preschoolers to grandparents. "'Unextinct' is great for all ages," he said.
As evidence of this, Tad and Vernonica Delicath, of Columbus, turned out with their three sons, Hal, 4, Xavier, 2, and Remy, 6 weeks. "We love glow-in-the dark stuff, so when we heard about this, we said, 'We're there,'" Veronica said.
Citing the Living Water exhibition, her husband agreed: "That was so cool!"
General admission to "Unextinct," which is separate from zoo admission, costs $28.99 for those 10 and older and $25.99 for children ages 3-9. Upgrade to a premium ticket for $38.99 and receive an interactive glow bracelet and souvenir cup. Members of the zoo, Zoombezi Bay and The Wilds receive discounts on admission prices.
Before you go, you can download the zoo's free mobile app from the Apple or Google Play store to see the animals featured in "Unextinct," along with conservation information about each.

Thyme, Tasmanian devil at the Columbus Zoo, dies at 5 years old
COLUMBUS, Ohio ( WCMH ) – A Tasmanian devil described as a cherished member of the Columbus Zoo who had an infectious love for life has died.
Thyme, a 5-year-old Tasmanian devil, died after facing health issues that may have been age-related, the Columbus Zoo announced on Facebook Wednesday. Tasmanian devils have a life expectancy of around 5 to 6 years.
“From her early days as a fierce, fiery baby to her later years as a trusting and loving adult, Thyme taught us invaluable lessons about her species and left an indelible mark on our hearts,” the zoo said.
May is National Water Safety Month: keeping your family safe in the water
The energetic and curious marsupial was a gentle soul with a fiery spirit who “captured the hearts of everyone she encountered,” the zoo said. When Thyme wasn’t basking in the sun’s rays or playfully exploring her surroundings, she enjoyed dragging paper into her nest box and snuggling up in a cozy lawn bag.
Thyme originally came to the Columbus Zoo from Tasmania in 2019 through the Save the Tasmanian Devil Program. Thyme was the last member of the original Tasmanian devil family at the zoo, which consisted of Thyme, Sprout and Mustard.
Pathology reports are still pending, but the zoo said Thyme seemingly did not respond to treatment for “discomfort she appeared to be in.” While Thyme’s beloved presence cannot be replaced, the Columbus Zoo states it is working to bring in more Tasmanian devils soon.
