26 Books About Cape Cod to Add to Your Reading List

Cape Cod is synonymous with summer vacation. So is reading books. At least my vacations are full of reading. When you combine the two – Cape Cod + books – you’ve got some great reading ahead of you. Of course, that’s just my humble opinion.

So, whether you plan to sunbathe on the beach, lay by the pool (or a kettle pond!), or get overly bundled up in cozy socks, leggings, and a hoodie (it’s cold on Cape Cod right now, so that’s me!) to sit by the fireplace, here are my suggested books about Cape Cod.

Cape Cod

Cape Cod's wild and unique beaches, dotted with lighthouses and dunes, are among the most beautiful on the American east coast.

The art of good living seems to be a way of life on the Cape: gourmet restaurants, small bistros, friendly cafés, fresh produce, good wines and art galleries abound.

Visitors can enjoy many outdoor activities: cycling, swimming, surfing, hiking, kayaking, fishing, wildlife watching, nature walks... There is something for everyone!

Cape Cod National Seashore

Phare de Cape Cod

The most popular beaches include Coast Guard Beach and Nauset Light Beach in the Eastham area, which are perfect for swimming. Marconi Beach near Wellfleet is a well-known surfing spot. In Truro, Longnook Beach is the most spectacular with its high dunes, and Head of the Meadow Beach is also popular, among other things because of its lifeguards. If you are travelling with young children, you will enjoy the calm waters of Corn Hill Beach . In the Provincetown area, choose Herring Cove Beach for its warm water and beautiful sunsets, or Race Point Beach for its long hours of sunshine and the possibility of spotting whales!

Provincetown

Provincetown - Cape Cod

The Pilgrim Monument was dedicated in 1910 to commemorate the first landfall of the Mayflower Pilgrims in Provincetown, an important moment in American history. Since that time, millions of visitors have climbed the 116 steps of this impressive 77-metre monument. The top of the tower offers a panoramic view of the city! Take the time to visit the Provincetown Museum to learn more about the arrival of the Mayflower Pilgrims, the city's rich maritime history, the  early days of modern American theater in Provincetown, and the building of the monument.

Whale watching tour

Observation des baleines

Several companies offer whale watching tours, but Dolphin Fleet is a reliable and popular company associated with the Center for Coastal Studies in Provincetown. Daily departures from MacMillan Pier in summer. Reservations are necessary.

Cape Code Trail

The most impressive route is the 11-km loop through the Province Lands dunes in Provincetown, at the northern tip of the peninsula. Bicycles can be rented at Ptown Bikes (42 Bradford Street, Provincetown).

Walking and hiking

Hiking is a popular activity in Cape Cod and there are many trails of varying length and difficulty.

In the Eastham area, the 1.6-km Nauset Marsh Trail is easy and offers beautiful views of Nauset Marsh. In Wellfleet, the Atlantic White Cedar Swamp Trail , a 2.4-km intermediate trail, is a must. In Provincetown, be sure to do the Beach Forest Trail , a 1.6-km loop through beech, pine and oak forest. And of course, many of the region's beaches are perfect for enjoying a lovely walk while taking in the fresh sea air.

Stop at the Salt Pond Visitor Center (50 Nauset Road, Eastham) for more information and to pick up trail maps.

From Cape Cod, you can easily take a ferry to the islands of Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket. These two islands are beautiful, but you must have enough time to fully appreciate them.

Martha's Vineyard

Edgartown, Martha's Vineyard

It is very pleasant to explore the island by bicycle. You can also go there by car if you wish. Pedestrian and bicycle ferries leave from Hyannis, Falmouth and Harwich, and car ferries have regular departures from Woods Hole.

Clay Cliffs of Aquinnah

You won't want to miss the magnificent Clay Cliffs of Aquinnah , the most photographed spot on the island. The best beaches are East Beach for its tranquility, Joseph Sylvia State Beach which is 4 km long, Katama Beach for surfing, and Moshup Beach for its incredible cliff views.

île de Nantucket

Don't miss the Coskata-Coatue Wildlife Refuge , where you can take a guided over-sand vehicle tours of the largest salt marsh on the island, and the Great Point Lighthouse , the northernmost lighthouse on the island. Madaket Beach is the best spot to watch the sun set, with its big waves rolling in from the open sea. The quaint cobblestone Main Street in historic downtown Nantucket is also a must-see, as is the Whaling Museum , where you can learn about the island's whaling history.

This cupcake shop in Provincetown is known to make the best cupcakes in the world according to some, or at least in the peninsula. Each cupcake sports Scott's signature swirl of pink buttercream frosting. Ridiculously delicious!

Cabot's Candy Factory ($)

Cabot's Candy got its start in 1927, hand-pulling saltwater taffy at small, local fairs. The popularity of this delectable seashore treat led to the opening of a beautiful little store and factory which still operates today. In addition to the classic taffy, this family business also sells fudge, flavoured popcorn and other delicious surprises that will delight young and old alike.

Moby Dick's ($$)

This seafood eatery is a must in all tourist guides for its fun and friendly New England clam shack experience. The menu offers an array of fresh seafood dishes, grilled, steamed or fried in a variety of ways. The place is so popular that there is a long lineup outside the doors every day. You can bring your own wine.

PB Boulangerie Bistro ($$-$$$)

This French bakery is extremely popular, as evidenced by the line of people in the parking lot waiting to enter. The chef is Philippe Rispoli, a native of France. You will find delicious fruit tarts, tasty almond and chocolate croissants and good baguettes, just like in Paris! For lunch, you order at the counter and seat yourself. A taste of France on Cape Cod!

Naked Oyster Bistro & Raw Bar ($$$)

This French bistro specializes in seafood dishes prepared with local ingredients, which often go from farm to plate in the same day. Oysters are the star of the show, but the menu also includes many other creative dishes and an exhaustive wine list. The owner and chef, Florence Lowell, is originally from Bordeaux, France.

Brewster Fish House ($$$$)

Located in a tiny cottage, this former seafood market transformed into a restaurant is a favourite with the locals.

Cape Cod Travel Guide

cape cod travel guide book

No matter how many times you visit Cape Cod, you'll continue to find new ways to be captivated by its beauty. Massachusetts' hook-shaped peninsula is special in so many ways, thanks to its abundance of charming towns and sandy, pitch-pine-dotted landscapes. In Chatham, for example, a lively Main Street beckons shoppers and diners. But further north, the towns of Wellfleet and Truro have a more laid-back vibe with quiet beaches and winding back roads. Provincetown — the crown jewel at the very tip of the Cape — is a haven for painters, photographers, and writers.

Just about every town on Cape Cod can lay claim to some of New England's most idyllic vacation rentals and bed-and-breakfasts — not to mention award-winning seafood shacks and restaurants. There's also the unspoiled beauty of the Cape Cod National Seashore, where seemingly endless stretches of sand invite you to sunbathe, hike, and sunbathe some more. And the Cape's countless other beaches are all treasures on their own, from Nauset Light Beach in Eastham to Mayflower Beach in Dennis.

A haven for those of us drawn to the sea, Cape Cod brims with nautical charm like no other. It's true: Nothing beats Cape Cod beaches or Cape Cod lighthouses, but in all honesty, we could do without the Cape Cod traffic.

Eastern Standard Time

Best Time to Go

While the height of summer (between June and late August) is the quintessential time to experience Cape Cod, it's a treat to visit in September and October, when the crowds have subsided. Prices tend to be lower in the fall, too. Don't miss the Provincetown Film Festival in June and Wellfleet OysterFest in October. Find flights here .

Things to Know

The Cape is famous for its traffic, and it has two bridges to thank for that: the Bourne Bridge and the Sagamore Bridge. They're the only entry and exit roads onto the hook-shaped chunk of land, and they almost always create a bottleneck effect on weekends in the summer.

Your best bet is to begin (and end) your stay on a weekday. If you absolutely must drive in or out on a weekend, expect to add over an hour to your driving time. (For reference, it takes about an hour and a half to drive from Provincetown to Bourne.) Visit Cape Cod Commission for real-time traffic updates.

Temperatures, much like traffic, vary wildly on the Cape. It's cooler than you might guess during summertime (thank you, sea breezes), and the ocean tends to hover around 67 degrees at the height of the season. It's also fairly mild in the winter — the salt air tends to minimize huge snowstorms. A word to the wise? Always bring a light jacket, no matter what the weatherman says, and keep a pair of flip-flops handy for spontaneous beach excursions.

How to Get Around

Google Maps might tell you Cape Cod is a little over an hour's drive from Boston, but in this case, the app is wrong. There's constantly bumper-to-bumper traffic in the summertime, especially on weekends. So, if you're driving, factor in another hour into your travel time to be safe.

There's the option to catch a short flight from Boston or Providence into Hyannis or Provincetown. You can also take a seasonal train called the CapeFlyer, which departs from Boston's South Station on Friday nights, Saturdays, and Sundays from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Tickets start at $22 one-way and $40 round-trip, and cover a two-hour scenic ride into Hyannis. (As an added bonus, kids 11 and under ride free when accompanied by a paying adult.)

The most fun way to get there is the fast ferry from Boston. Bay State Cruise Company and Boston Harbor Cruises offer 90-minute rides across the bay, where you can sip a cold beer from the onboard bar. Tickets start at $61 one-way or $93 round-trip. Once you arrive, you'll need to rent a car to see everything. There is a public bus system, but it doesn't reach every corner of the Cape (or every beach). It's most useful to travelers staying put in one or two towns, or for short trips. A CharlieCard, the form of payment used on Boston's subway system, is accepted on Cape Cod Regional Transit Authority buses.

Eben House, one of Provincetown's premier boutique hotels, harbors a whole lot of history. The building, which was once the home of captain Eben Snow, is one of only three colonial-era brick houses in town. Outside, a new saltwater pool serves as a laid-back retreat from the buzz of nearby Commercial Street.

These days, historic details are balanced with more modern comforts, like a renovated spa with a hydrotherapy tub and four restaurants that source their fruits and veggies from the hotel's own eight-acre farm. When it comes time to hit the beach, you can enjoy food and beverage service at your private cabana in the sand.

Ocean Edge Resort & Golf Club

Address: 2907 Main St., Brewster, MA 02631 Phone: (508) 896-9000 Book Now

Situated on the Lower Cape in the town of Brewster, the award-winning resort is one of New England's finest. There's plenty to do on the 429-acre property, too, like kick back on a private bayside beach, rent a few stand-up paddleboards, or book an oyster bed tour. For a day in the woods, Nickerson State Park is just down the road.

Salt House Inn

Address: 6 Conwell St., Provincetown, MA 02657 Phone: (508) 487-1911 Book Now

A sister property to Eben House, Salt House Inn exudes quirky seaside charm with doses of antique elegance and bright-white minimalism. It's steps from Commercial Street, situated halfway between the Lobster Pot and Provincetown Art Association and Museum, yet still feels relatively quiet and cozy. The inn is topped off with an airy suite called The Loft, which comes with an in-room clawfoot tub, a writing desk, and a reading nook.

Address: 59 Province Lands Rd., Provincetown, MA 02657 Phone: (508) 413-9820 Book Now

This new spot in Provincetown lies at the very tip of the Cape. Opened by Lark Hotels in 2018, the 30-room Awol is inspired by the palette of the surrounding sand dunes. Rooms flaunt a sort of understated elegance, with polished concrete floors, straw light fixtures, and natural fabrics. Each one comes with its own private outdoor space, not to mention Lather bath products. Outside, there's a pool, three fire pits, and an open-air bar.

Captain Freeman Inn

Address: 15 Breakwater Rd., Brewster, MA 02631 Phone: (508) 896-7481 Book Now

Like many of the Cape's charming accommodations, the Captain Freeman Inn is carved from the former home of a sea captain. But the 10 guest rooms inside this 1866 manse are one-of-a-kind, thanks to a host of original details (hello, ornate ceiling medallions) and antique decorations. Captain Freeman would be glad to know each bed is made with 600-thread-count sheets, and if guests so choose, they can order facial and massage treatments straight to their rooms.

The Platinum Pebble Boutique Inn

Address: 186 Belmont Rd., West Harwich, MA 02671 Phone: (508) 432-7766 Book Now

Beach chairs, towels, and umbrellas are free to guests, as are bicycles for cruising down the Cape Cod Rail Trail.

Architecture lovers will delight in this stunning adaptive reuse project, where guest "chambers" have vaulted ceilings, skylight windows, balconies, and whirlpool bathtubs. Downstairs, soft piano music lends a glorious atmosphere to the church-like Bistro. Beyond its impressive seasonal menu, the restaurant showcases a vast wine selection in the confessional stand behind the bar.

The Coonamessett

Address: 311 Gifford St., Falmouth, MA 02540 Phone: (508) 548-2300 Book Now

The Upper Cape inn is a popular wedding venue, boasting 29 stylish rooms and suites and several large event spaces. For casual beachgoers, the property lends beach bags, chairs, umbrellas, and Solé beach bikes to guests, and for some time in the shade, there are several hammocks on the lawn for lounging.

Best Restaurants

Address: 17 Truro Center Rd., Truro, MA 02666 Phone: (508) 349-3399 Website

For an elevated dining experience on the Outer Cape, hop in the car and head to Blackfish. The weathered-shingle restaurant, formerly a blacksmith shop, is tucked on a back road in Truro. Don't let its unassuming exterior deter you — the New American spot serves out-of-this-world seafood, Wellfleet oysters, and natural beef burgers in an elegant setting. In the back, there's a glass-walled dining area overlooking a lush garden.

The Canteen

Address: 225 Commercial St., Provincetown, MA 02657 Phone: (508) 487-3800 Website

High-quality, laid-back eats are the name of the game at the Canteen, a beachy counter-service spot along Commercial Street in Provincetown. Order a cold lobster roll, cod banh mi, and crispy brussels sprouts for the table, then head out back to enjoy it on the patio overlooking Cape Cod Bay.

Kream n' Kone, Dennis

Address: 961 Main St., West Dennis, MA 02670 Phone: (508) 394-0808 Website

Kream 'n Kone is the classic Cape Cod seafood shack. Dating back to 1953, the no-frills establishment offers the standard lineup of beer-battered fare: fried clam strips, scallop dinners, and the like — all served on paper plates, of course. Pull up a chair for a salt-sprinkled, nostalgia-inducing experience, then grab a vanilla frappe on your way out.

Brewster Fish House

Address: 2208 Main St., Brewster, MA 02631 Phone: (508) 896-7867 Website

Nestled inside a quaint little cottage, Brewster Fish House dazzles guests with a refreshingly contemporary menu. While the perennially packed place draws crowds with its famed lobster bisque, it's the fresh takes on old classics, like seared cod with jasmine rice and lemon emulsion, that keep them coming back.

Mac's Shack, Wellfleet

Address: 91 Commercial St., Wellfleet, MA 02667 Phone: (508) 349-6333 Website

Pure, simple, fresh — these three words underscore the mission of Mac's Shack, which serves the daily catch alongside locally sourced ingredients. Located near the town's pier, the beloved seafood spot is understated, yet sophisticated. Whitewashed walls and straightforward dishes such as cracker-crusted bluefish add to the austere appeal of the place.

The Pheasant

Address: 905 Main St., Dennis, MA 02638 Phone: (508) 385-2133 Website

Opened in 2018, The Pheasant is the creation of two ex-Brooklyners who fled the city for the Cape. They revamped the inside of a 200-year-old farmhouse, then created an unfussy menu that changes with the seasons. Dishes incorporate locally and sustainably harvested ingredients, like fresh-caught quahogs, littleneck clams, and Seawind Meadows farm grass-fed beef.

Sunbird Kitchen

Address: 85 MA-6A, Orleans, MA 02653 Phone: (508) 237-0354 Website

A quirky, comfy hangout inside a pseudo strip mall, Sunbird is the Lower Cape's haven for coffee lovers — they serve brews from Portland, Maine-based Tandem Coffee Roasters and New York's Counter Culture Coffee. Fresh, local dishes like the grain and seed bowl mix in heirloom beans, seasonal veggies, and salsa verde, while triple-infused chocolate chip cookies satisfy sweet tooths.

Spindler's

Address: 386 Commercial St., Provincetown, MA 02657 Phone: (508) 487-6400 Website

A relatively new addition to P-town, Spindler's comes from Boston-based, James Beard Award-winning chef Barbara Lynch. Its menu sits at the crossroads of French and Italian, and sources its ingredients from Cape Cod and greater New England. For a late afternoon pick-me-up, pull up a seat at one of the bar's yellow stools and tuck into a swordfish kebab or corned beef slider.

Sesuit Harbor Cafe, Dennis

Address: 357 Sesuit Neck Rd., Dennis, MA 02638 Phone: (508) 385-6134 Website

One of the best raw bars on the Cape is inside a no-frills, buoy-clad shack on the shores of Sesuit Harbor. Order oysters, steamers, and mussels from the bar, then grab a lobster roll — the kind that's lovingly placed in those red-and-white paper boats — from the main restaurant. Enjoy it all at a picnic table overlooking Dennis' Northside Marina on one side, and Cape Cod bay to the other.

Things to Do

Cape cod national seashore.

Address: 99 Marconi Site Rd., Wellfleet, MA 02667 Website

Head to the Outer Cape to glimpse the sandy stretches of the Cape Cod National Seashore, a preserved swath of coastline established by President John F. Kennedy in 1961. The seashore's visitor center in Eastham offers a comprehensive overview of the area, and connects to several hiking trails. The crown jewel of hiking on the Cape, however, is the Great Island Trail, a nearly seven-mile hike along the National Seashore in Wellfleet.

Monomoy Island Seal Cruise

Jutting out into the Atlantic from Chatham, Monomoy Island is home to a National Wildlife Refuge, where migratory birds nest and seals linger on both land and sea. A Monomoy Island Seal Cruise showcases the area's wildlife — board a catamaran-style boat to see hundreds of harbor and grey seals swimming in waters near historic lighthouses.

Sandwich Glass Museum

Address: 129 Main St., Sandwich, MA 02563 Phone: (508) 888-0251 Website

The town of Sandwich, Massachusetts, was once a hub for the American glass industry. The Sandwich Glass Museum chronicles the history of the glass industry on the Cape, showcasing the company's classic designs and hundreds of other colorful treasures. Live glass-blowing demonstrations round out a sparkling visit.

Highland Light

Address: 27 Highland Light Rd., North Truro, MA 02652 Website

Did you really visit Cape Cod if you didn't climb to the top of an active lighthouse? Perched on the coast of Truro, Highland Lighthouse was commissioned by George Washington and erected in 1797 as the 20th light station in the newly formed United States. When the lighthouse isn't undergoing structural repairs, visitors can mount all 69 twisting, turning steps to the top for sweeping views of the ocean. (Tours of the lighthouse are suspended through 2021, but the grounds are open, so you can take in those views.) Nearby, the Highland House Museum, once a hotel, presents the history of Truro's earliest European settlers.

Provincetown Art Association and Museum

Address: 460 Commercial St., Provincetown, MA 02657 Phone: (508) 487-1750 Website

Provincetown is a haven for artists, so it's no wonder its art museum is a treat for the eyes. Much of the museum's collection represents artists from the Outer Cape, including the likes of Ross Moffett, Blanche Lazzell, and Robert Motherwell. Keep an eye out for exhibit openings — they're free and open to the public.

Pilgrim Monument

Address: 1 High Pole Hill Rd., Provincetown, MA 02657 Website

Built in 1910 to commemorate the landing of the Pilgrims in Provincetown, the Pilgrim Monument is the town's most recognizable landmark. The views atop it are unparalleled, displaying the dramatic curve of the Cape. The catch? It's a bit of a workout to get there. After a spin through the monument's history museum, climb the tower's 116 steps to reach the top. It's not so hard to catch your breath when you're overlooking the Atlantic.

Cape Cod Rail Trail

This 22-mile-long bike trail traverses a huge section of the Cape. From Dennis all the way to Wellfleet, the trail meanders past kettle ponds and cranberry bogs, through a state park, and up to the National Seashore. Rent a bike in one of the towns along the trail, and trace a part (or all) of it.

Whydah Pirate Museum

Address: 674 MA-28, West Yarmouth, MA 02673 Phone: (508) 534-9571 Website

The Whydah Pirate Museum is not Cape Cod's only pirate museum, but it is its newest. Opened in 2016 in West Yarmouth, the building off of Route 28 contains a true-to-size model of the Whydah Gally , a pirate ship that sank off the coast of Wellfleet in the 1700s. Learn all about the artifacts recovered from the ship and the adventures of the museum's owner, Barry Clifford, who unearthed the wreck in 1984.

Best Shopping

Commercial street, provincetown.

Commercial Street is Provincetown's main thoroughfare, lined with adorable shops, boutiques, and art galleries. From Marine Specialties, a quirky surplus store, to Packard Gallery, one of the Cape's most famous art galleries, there's plenty to browse at a range of price points. You could pop into the stores along the road that catch your eye, then sit down for a classic lobster dinner at the Lobster Pot .

Downtown Chatham

The downtown area of Chatham appeals to upscale shoppers. Brands like Lilly Pulitzer, FatFace, and Jack Wills have set up along Main Street, but the road is mainly populated with locally owned spots. Boutiques like Mayflower Shop sell playful home goods in a centuries-old building, while Chatham Candy Manor doles out some of the most delectable fudge around.

Wicked Thrift & PopRock Vintage

Address: 1094 MA-28, South Yarmouth, MA 02664 Phone: (508) 648-5902 Website

Love shopping vintage? There's no need to wade through racks to pluck out a winner — each and every piece from Wicked Thrift is a treasure. The South Yarmouth store sells both vintage and modern clothing for men and women, and is chock-full of one-of-a-kind accessories.

Downtown Hyannis

Strolling Main Street Hyannis can feel like stepping back in time. Lined with ice cream shops, candy stores, and some standby T-shirt emporiums, it's a family-friendly spot to bring the kids. If you stop for a ride on Wackenhammer's carousel, browse the Cape Cod bracelets at Cape Cod Jewelers, and grab a handful of penny candy at the Kandy Korner, you've checked off the boxes for a perfect Hyannis detour.

Cuffy's

Address: Multiple Locations Website

Cuffy's is Cape Cod's most iconic outfitter. You might recognize their apparel — it's the wholesome shop that sells those classic pastel-colored sweatshirts with "Cape Cod" emblazoned on the front. With four locations across the Cape, it's hard not to stop in — and too easy to walk out with a hoodie or three.

Towns to Know

Provincetown: Provincetown (better known as P-town) is quirky, quaint, and a lot of fun when the sun goes down. Situated at the very tip of the Cape, its population swells with artists — and plenty of talented drag queens — in the summertime. Spend the morning soaking up the sun at Race Point Beach, then explore all Commercial Street has to offer.

Wellfleet: Wellfleet shows off a sleepier side of the Cape, as gray-shingled cottages and old captains' houses dot leafy back roads. It's one of the towns that makes up the Cape Cod National Seashore, where wide-open stretches of sand blend into the Atlantic.

Chatham: As one of the Cape's tonier towns, Chatham has a lot to offer. Visitors here will find great shopping, luxurious hotels, and some of the area's most pristine beaches.

Hyannis: Hyannis is a major transportation hub for the Cape, as both trains and buses end their journeys from Boston here. Stopping to stroll down Main Street makes for an afternoon well spent.

Dennis: This single town boasts a whopping 16 beaches, thanks to coastlines on both its northern and southern borders. Eight of them are situated along the ocean side, while the other eight offer a calmer experience by the bay.

Falmouth: Tucked at Cape Cod's eastern end, the charming town of Falmouth sits across the sound from Martha's Vineyard. It's a good option for a weekend trip from elsewhere in New England, as it's not too far up the arm of the Cape.

Flocks of beachgoers descend upon Cape Cod between June and August. July is the peninsula's hottest month, with an average high of 78°F (25°C). Come wintertime, most towns are quiet. Snow is somewhat rare, thanks to salty sea air and more mild temperatures, but it's wise to be prepared anyway. January and December are the Cape's coldest months, with an average high of 40°F (4°C).

Average temperatures according to the U.S. Weather Bureau are as follows:

January: 25°F to 40°F February: 26°F to 41°F March: 28°F to 42°F April: 40°F to 53°F May: 48°F to 62°F June: 56°F to 71°F July: 63°F to 78°F August: 62°F to 76°F September: 56°F to 70°F October: 57°F to 59°F November: 37°F to 49°F December: 26°F to 40°F

Where to stay

What to expect when visiting cape cod.

Cape Cod, or just the Cape, stretches out into the Atlantic Ocean from the southeastern corner of Massachusetts. In a heavily populated area of the United States , just roughly an hour from Boston , the peninsula has managed to remain untouched.

Above all, it’s the peaceful and friendly ambience that defines Cape Cod. As soon as you cross Cape Cod Canal from the mainland, you start to feel recharged.

Everywhere from the base of the peninsula to the Outer Cape tip, there are stunning Atlantic surroundings to admire. However, Cape Cod National Seashore is the part that best captures the timeless landscape on the peninsula.

In addition to the Atlantic nature, the peninsula’s historic seaside towns add a dimension. Among the 15 welcoming Cape Cod towns, it’s incredibly hard to pick a favorite.

Cape Cod areas and towns

Cape Cod is divided into four areas: Upper Cape, Mid Cape, Lower Cape and Outer Cape. The Upper Cape is the area located closest to the mainland, and the Outer Cape is the part furthest away. Together the peninsula’s areas are home to 15 charming seaside towns to get to know.

In the very western part of Cape Cod, you find the bridge connections to the Massachusetts mainland. The towns Bourne, Sandwich, Falmouth and Mashpee are located in the Upper Cape.

Most notably, the Upper Cape and Falmouth is where you find the quickest ferry connection to Martha’s Vineyard. It just takes 35 minutes across the Vineyard Sound, meaning day trips are highly feasible.

  • Upper Cape towns: Bourne, Sandwich, Falmouth & Mashpee.

In order from the mainland, the Mid Cape is the second part of Cape Cod. The Mid Cape towns include Dennis, Yarmouth and Cape Cod’s biggest town Barnstable.

Barnstable is home to the historically interesting JFK Musuem. And from Barnstable, high-speed ferries take you to the island of Nantucket in only roughly an hour.

  • Mid Cape towns: Dennis, Yarmouth & Barnstable.

Further from the mainland, across Bass River, the Lower Cape is the third Cape Cod area to get to know. The towns in the Lower Cape are Orleans, Brewster, Harwich and Chatham.

The Lower Cape is both central and offers easy access to the biggest natural gem in Cape Cod, the impressive Cape Cod National Seashore.

  • Lower Cape towns: Orleans, Brewster, Harwich & Chatham.

If you want a secluded vacation in Cape Cod, there’s no better location than the Outer Cape. In the remote area, furthest from the mainland, the towns Eastham, Wellfleet, Truro and Provincetown are located.

Above all the Outer Cape area is home to the celebrated Cape Cod National Seashore. But Wellfleet is also where you find the peninsula’s iconic drive-in theater, and Provincetown offers a surprising liveliness.

  • Outer Cape towns: Eastham, Wellfleet, Truro & Provincetown.

The best things to do in Cape Cod

From the beaches to the history, it’s easy to find inspiration when you take a Cape Cod vacation. These are the best things to do in Cape Cod.

Hit the Cape Cod beaches

With 560 miles (901 km) of coastline, there’s no shortage of incredible beaches to visit on Cape Cod. On Cape Cod Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, there are beaches for every traveler.

Often the Cape Cod beaches on the Atlantic Ocean are mentioned among the very best beaches in America. Coast Guard Beach in Eastham, Nauset Beach in Orleans and Race Point Beach in Provincetown are spots of the highest level.

Although the Cape Cod Bay beaches don’t get the same attention, they offer a welcome contrast. The Cape Cod Bay is perfect if you like the idea of a more protected environment than the open Atlantic coastline.

Find peace at Cape Cod National Seashore

Cape Cod National Seashore extends for roughly 40 miles (64 km) along the peninsula’s eastern coast. The area of flawless shoreline including woods, ponds and beaches is one of the most stunning stretches of the entire Atlantic coast.

When you visit, the area appears to have frozen in time. The presence of endless sand dunes, powerful waves and playful seals showcases the untouchedness that Cape Cod offers.

The wild environment of Cape Cod National Seashore makes a visit one of the best things to do in Cape Cod. It’s easy to find a visit inspirational no matter if you hike, bike or just hang out on the dunes.

Cape Cod National Seashore is also a highlight around the year. Although colder, the unique Cape Cod National Seashore is certainly as impressive a crisp day of winter as a hot day of summer.

Explore the legacy of JFK

The educational JFK Museum is the perfect opportunity to learn about the legacy of one of the most celebrated US presidents ever. At the museum in the heart of Hyannis, you get to walk in the steps of John F. Kennedy.

During his days, the former US president used to frequent the shores of Cape Cod. In the peaceful setting on the sandy peninsula, he could unwind with family and close friends.

At the Hyannis museum you can indulge in the history of the former president. Highlights as you explore the life of JFK, with a focus on his Cape Cod years, include intimate photographs not published anywhere else.

With such an historically important story to tell, it’s easy to see why the museum is one of the most popular attractions in Cape Cod. The JFK Museum is nicely set up and certainly a must on the Cape Cod itinerary for history buffs.

Enjoy movies under the stars

In the Outer Cape area, the peninsula provides the perfect scene for movie hungry visitors. Without question the most classic way to enjoy a movie when you vacation in Cape Cod is the Wellfleet drive-in theater .

The venue from 1957 looks just like it did back in the glory days of drive-in theaters. It’s hard not to be nostalgic when you see the large outdoor screen, designated parking area and cute concession stand at the iconic attraction.

Movies under the stars is a proud Cape Cod summer tradition, and one of the best things to do in Cape Cod for the whole family. A movie, tasty snacks and the old time vibe is an experience that people of all ages can enjoy together.

Far away from the rushed everyday life, the drive-in movies include a traditional snack break. The intermission offers the perfect time for a refill or to stretch your legs. At the timeless venue, you also just might have to double-check on the movie ticket what year it really is.

Cape Cod wildlife viewing

The untouched landscape in Cape Cod is enjoyed by all kinds of wildlife. In particular, more than 450 animal species call Cape Cod National Seashore their home.

A highlight is to observe the seals that inhabit the Cape Cod waters. Often when you walk along the serene Cape Cod beaches, you can spot them in the water.

Another fascinating wildlife activity to enjoy in Cape Cod is whale watching. Whalewatcher cruises depart from Provincetown, offering remarkable views of those huge marine mammals.

Wake up at an idyllic New England hotel

The best way to begin a day on a Cape Cod trip is to jump out of your bed at one of the many charming and historic Cape Cod inns. With accommodations that goes hand in hand with the serene setting, you make the most of your Cape Cod vacation.

All over the peninsula you find delightful inns ready to make your visit extra memorable. At the genuine and often smaller properties, you find the warm and peaceful ambience that you associate with Cape Cod and New England .

A prime choice for a quintessential Cape Cod stay is Chatham’s Old Harbor Inn. Everything from the facade and the garden to the furniture and pretty details inside just breathes Cape Cod.

Cape Cod lighthouse hopping

Cape Cod is home to numerous lighthouses. The representative structures are both important pieces of history and some of the best Cape Cod photo opportunities.

Nauset Light is with its red and white colors one of the most iconic lighthouses on Cape Cod. Located within the Cape Cod National Seashore, it’s also an easy one to add to the Cape Cod itinerary.

Just a short walk from Nauset Light, but much more hidden, the Three Sisters Lights stand. The more humble trio of lighthouses used to be part of the Nauset Beach Light Station before time caught up with them.

See if Martha’s Vineyard lives up to the hype

The expression Cape Cod and the islands is often used to describe Cape Cod and the surrounding islands. One of the most renowned Cape Cod islands is Martha’s Vineyard.

Only a few miles from the southwestern part of Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard floats. Checking if Martha’s Vineyard lives up to the hype is an unforgettable extension to a Cape Cod vacation.

The idyllic island, in the waters off Cape Cod, is one of the very largest islands on the East Coast of the US. Only Mount Desert Island Island, closely associated with Acadia National Park, and Long Island are bigger. With a land area of almost 100 square miles, there’s a lot to explore on Martha’s Vineyard.

Its historic towns, white beaches and quiet harbors clearly explain why the island is such a popular summer colony. The classic summer destination can be visited as a day trip from Cape Cod, but it’s also easy to motivate a longer stay on the island.

With six towns to choose from, including the elegant Edgartown and quirky Oak Bluffs, there’s something for everyone on the popular island off Cape Cod. The best Martha’s Vineyard hotels appeal to the most hard-flirted travelers out there.

Harbor view on Martha's Vineyard

Discover Nantucket

Nantucket is another of the most prominent islands included in the Cape Cod and the islands area. Just like Martha’s Vineyard, it’s a blissful island to include on a Cape Cod vacation.

Its 82 miles (132 km) of stunning shoreline are like made for relaxation. Whether you prefer a lively or a quiet beach, you find it on Nantucket.

As a bonus, the whole island of Nantucket is also designated a National Historic Landmark. In particular as you walk the island’s main town area, you can enjoy the many well preserved houses from the 18th and 19th centuries.

Conveniently so you also find several tasteful Nantucket hotels in and around the district filled with history.

It’s hard to believe so when you visit the nowadays fancy summer escape, but Nantucket used to be a pretty rough working place. The island near Cape Cod once was the very epicenter of the world’s whaling industry. A great way to learn about the past of Nantucket and Cape Cod is to visit the Whaling Museum .

Golden beach on Nantucket

From the peninsula’s base, the Upper Cape, Mid Cape, Lower Cape and Outer Cape are different options for where to stay in Cape Cod . Spread out across the areas, Cape Cod offers exploration of 15 different towns.

What all the areas and towns have in common is an idyllic ambience and a strong love for the ocean. Although with slightly different characteristics, there are no bad bases on Cape Cod.

But keep in mind that the driving times on Cape Cod shouldn’t be underestimated. The 79 miles (127 km) from Falmouth in the Upper Cape to Provincetown in the Outer Cape often takes roughly 2 hours to drive during the busy summer season.

Recommended hotels & inns

Cape Cod is more than a place. It’s a feeling.

It’s the sand in your toes and the salty air. Quaint downtowns and unique shops. Lobster dinners and a leisurely kayak. Seaside festivals and an epic whale watch. An exciting art exhibit to check out, or a new brewery. A blanket on the beach and a beautiful sunset.

We all have memories of The Cape. And while some of the surroundings may be the same, the people we shared it with, the feelings we experienced, and the memories we made are all our own. These unique, individual experiences make Cape Cod a place that people keep coming back to. A place that leaves an indelible mark on your life that feels truly personal, truly remarkable and truly yours.

Lots of people bought second homes on the Cape during the pandemic. That means more short-term rentals this summer.

The number of properties available for short-term rental has jumped 50 percent since 2021..

For the last few years, finding a summer rental on the Cape has felt nearly impossible as prices soared, making it increasingly out of reach. But in a rare bit of good news on the housing front — at least for vacationers — renting at a reasonable rate might be a little more possible this year due to an uptick in availability.

The Cape has nearly 18,000 short-term rentals on the market this summer, a 12 percent increase from April last year and nearly 50 percent more than March 2021, according to the Massachusetts Department of Revenue and the Cape Cod Commission.

Why? A big reason is the ripples from the wave of second-home buying that hit Cape Cod during the COVID-19 pandemic . Many second homeowners are now looking to recoup some of their costs as they spend less time on the Cape and return to more normal work and school routines, said Paul Niedzwiecki, executive director of the Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce.

That increased availability has stabilized the cost of rentals. Prices were unsustainable during 2021 and 2022, Niedzwiecki said, when people flocked to the Cape as a safe space during the pandemic, sending costs to rent a house for the week (or longer) soaring. They improved last year and will level off even more this summer.

“We had another really good year last year,” said Niedzwiecki. “It will be another solid year.”

However, some traditional Cape lodgings, such as hotels and bed & breakfasts, are seeing demand fade, and don’t command the high rates that short-term rentals do, according to an AirDNA report compiled by the Massachusetts Office of Travel & Tourism.

For example, the report shows that in July of last year, traditional lodging in Barnstable County had an occupancy rate of 71 percent, with an average daily rate of $286, compared to short-term rentals in the same period that saw an occupancy rate of 86 percent with an average daily rate of $552.

A dense neighborhood of homes in Provincetown last summer. An uptick in availability across the Cape has made renting for the summer a little more possible this year.

But if supply is up, demand is still strong, too — a sign that overall interest in Cape Cod remains high.

Bookings at WeNeedaVacation, an online platform with nearly 4,000 rentals on the Cape and Islands, are running 3.4 percent ahead of last year’s pace, said co-owner Joan Talmadge; prices are up 2 to 3 percent. Compared with 2019, bookings are up 27 percent through March.

And Talmadge, who has overseen vacation rentals since 1997, says clients are looking for upscale experiences in ways they did not before .

“Years and years ago, when people were renting homes, it was often a cottage that wasn’t winterized, and they might have had to do their own cleaning before they left — the price, of course, was much lower,” said Talmadge. “But that has all changed. It’s a whole different environment now.”

Adding to the cost of Cape summer rentals, a bushel of new taxes.

The state occupancy excise tax of 5.7 percent and the Cape Cod and Islands Water Protection Fund tax of 2.75 percent both went into effect in 2019. Most towns also have additional occupancy fees of 6 percent. All told, taxes can add 14 percent or more to the cost of a week.

It hasn’t really dented demand, said Luke Chapman, CEO and founder of Orleans-based Del Mar Vacations , but he worries about what ever-increasing costs might do to other businesses — from ice cream shops to bike and boat rentals — that rely on summer visitors spending money.

“If your economy depends on tourism and you’re applying a sizable sin tax, you’re implying that you’re trying to dissuade that behavior, which I think is probably unwise,” he said.

Luke Chapman, founder and owner of Del Mar Vacations, checked on a rental property in South Yarmouth.

A growing share of the people who own summer rentals are themselves Cape residents — meaning the money generated by rentals is more likely to stay local, Chapman said.

“A lot of the conversation around rentals is always about ‘these baddies from New York City buying up all the real estate,’” he said. “But based on a couple of hundred interviews I’ve done with homeowners this year, I’d say more than ever I’m talking with folks … [who] live locally.”

Tanner Ellison put his house in Harwich on the short-term rental market for the first time this year after moving into a larger home nearby with his family. The listing went up last month and he’s already booked all but four weeks this summer, charging $2,000 a week for the 915-square-foot two-bedroom. The extra rental income is a cushion that helps him afford Cape Cod.

“It’s allowing us to stay here with a little more security,” said Ellison.

For others, renting out a house on the Cape is a way to plan for retirement. Take Susan and John Alexander, who live in Boston and own a rental house in Falmouth. They dream of having the house to themselves one summer, but this year, most of July and part of August are already booked, and carving time for themselves feels like a jigsaw puzzle. As they are semi-retired, the rent from summer visitors is a big part of their income.

“Let’s see what happens,” said Susan Alexander. “But it’s a special place. We love it.”

Last year, coming off the crazy years of the pandemic, some vacation-property owners adjusted their asking rent down a bit in order to fill their houses. That kept occupancy high. On the islands, price was less a factor, and the occupancy numbers were even higher.

The islands don’t have as many hotels, motels, and rentals as the Cape. A state database lists around 4,000 short-term rentals on Martha’s Vineyard, though that doesn’t include properties rented 14 nights or less, and just over 3,000 on Nantucket — a number that could decline amid a raging debate over how to regulate them there.

Evening light fell on boats as they bobbed in the harbor of Nantucket on Aug. 13, 2020.

Niedzwiecki said the ferry connection also constrains the islands. The Steamship Authority is already reporting that they are sold out for most of the peak season if one wants to take a car over.

“There’s an exclusivity with the islands,” said Niedzwiecki.

No matter where they go, Talmadge has seen one notable trend take hold since the pandemic: Vacationers are planning their trips earlier, sometimes as early as the previous fall. Maggie Kulbokas, a rental manager for Kinlin Grover who manages close to 200 properties on the outer Cape, has seen that shift, too. Vacationers are booking year-round, with larger partiers tending to book earlier. The majority are repeat customers.

Amy Ruffo of Brooklyn, N.Y., has been vacationing on the Cape since early childhood and has noticed that trend firsthand.

When she rented in September last year, the owner showed the house to potential renters who came to view the property — while she was there — and book it for the next year.

“That blew my mind,” said Ruffo. “Why would you spend your vacation time looking for your next vacation house?”

Del Mar Vacations worker Emily Araujo (left) carried bags of supplies with co-worker Jaqueline Abrants as they cleaned and prepared a South Yarmouth rental home.
