For First Time Solo Travellers

Or less-experienced travellers in general, making decisions when trying to plan for the ultimate travel adventure can be incredibly daunting. How to get from one place to another, how to see everything you want to see in a certain amount of time. The list goes on. The good news is that going on a tour can make those decisions a whole lot easier and take the stress out of the equation.

I think tours are a really great way to ease into stepping out of your comfort zone. Why? Because everyone you are doing it with is in the exact same boat. A tour is essentially an organised trip that is guided and, honestly, who doesn’t enjoy a bit of organised fun?

Dispelling Myths About Tours

Group tours can sometimes get a bad wrap, particularly from adventurous souls who prefer to go their own way at their own pace, in search of a road less travelled by. But many don’t know that opting for a tour doesn’t mean you have to compromise on adventure, independence or more low-key destinations.

There exists the assumption that tours can be too large and impersonal, over-guided, and subject to a strict itinerary. While this may still be the case for some, this structure has changed dramatically in recent times. Most group tour operators these days now focus on offering flexibility, variety and smaller, more intimate tours.

It’s also important to note that group tours are not one size fits all. The number of types of tours are endless. But I can guarantee that you are bound to find one that suits your travel style and expectations and allows you to meet like-minded people.

Some tours choose to just scratch the surface and cover as many key tourist sights as possible. Others may choose a slower and more authentic approach that focuses more on educating travellers on the destination, culture and environment.

From sightseeing tours, to eco-tours, to adventure tours, there’s a myriad of options out there that are worth exploring!

The Value of a Guide

One of the biggest benefits of choosing a tour is the guide.

Tour companies will often employ local people, meaning guides often have first-hand experience living in and exploring the destination. This comes hand in hand with extensive knowledge of the area, along with its culture and history. Because of this, the experience is made ten times more authentic and personal, because you are being shown the destination through the eyes of an insider.

Local guides also have the hot tips: the hidden gems, the cutest locally-owned shops where you can buy gifts for your friends back home, and which cafe to get the best oat milk flat white from (if you don’t know what that is, you’re in for a treat).

A good tour guide is engaging, passionate and knows how to tell a story.

Having a guide show you around should feel like wandering around town with a mate. Exploring little streets and quirky stores, doing a bit of window shopping along the way, trading stories and anecdotes, popping into a bakery for a treat, taking some photos for the gram and finishing the day off with a nice cold beer and a burger at the pub on the corner. Throw some valuable insight and knowledge about the destination and culture into the mix, and you’ve basically got yourself a guided tour. Who would have thought?

tour is meaning

Meet Like Minded People

Let’s not forget that travelling is all about meeting new people and sharing experiences with them.

So, what better way to do that than throw yourself into the deep end right from the start and spend days (or weeks) eating, drinking, sleeping and exploring with your own little travel crew?

There’s something really special about discovering new places with new people who are like minded and share the same passion for travel. It really does make the whole experience so much more enriching and memorable.

Take it from someone who works for a tour company and sees it every week. Travellers start the week off as complete strangers, all from different walks of life, bringing their own experiences and stories to the table, and over the course of the week they become such a tight-knit family that by the end, they don’t want to part ways.

You never know what could happen. Whether it’s finding the perfect summer fling to get you over your breakup or meeting friends for life that you will go on to travel with for years. The possibilities are endless!

The sense of community that comes hand in hand with people choosing to go on an adventure together is pretty heartwarming and in my opinion, is what travelling is all about.

tour is meaning

Avoid Logistical Nightmares

Sometimes, it’s best just to leave it to the experts to take care of the logistics.

Don’t want to be blind sighted by national park fees that you were unaware of? How about left desperately searching for the nearest gas station? Or having to deal with a bus or accommodation booking gone wrong when you’ve had approximately 2 hours of sleep and a ton of tequila?

If you opt for a tour, not only does it often make more sense financially, but EVERYTHING is organised and taken care of for you. This means that you have more time to just be, enjoy and take it all in without worrying about where to be, how to get there or what to do.

To put this into perspective, let’s take Fraser Island as an example. Fraser Island is the largest sand island in the world, and a must-do destination on the East Coast of Australia.

No roads means the only way to get around is by driving around the island, on the sand, in a 4×4. Yes, it’s exactly as cool as it seems.

Doing a guided tour is HIGHLY recommended because not only is the island HUGE and remote, it’s also dangerous if you don’t understand the tides. As in, you could end up in the ocean if you miscalculate when high tide is.

On top of this, wouldn’t you just rather have all of the boring stuff (food, camping gear, transport) already sorted for you so you can spend your energy on frolicking in the pristine freshwater lakes, cruising down lazy rivers, driving like a rockstar on the beach and drinking beers by the fire?

tour is meaning

So How Do I Find The Right Tour For Me?

You do want to make sure that you pick a tour that’s designed for travellers like you, has the vibe you’re looking for and has good reviews so make sure you do your research!

Watch some YouTube videos/travel vlogs and read some blog posts by people who have done the tour or by the company itself. These can really help give some insight into what to expect, what the company is like and if it’s for you. Word-of-mouth recommendations are usually quite reliable!

Go on the company website and even reach out to them . We all understand that this is a difficult decision to make, so we’re more than happy to answer your questions or paint a better picture for you. At the end of the day, we just want you to have an unreal and unforgettable experience, because a good tour is one you will never forget.

Etymology

c. 1300, "a turn of events; one's shift on duty," from Old French tor, tour, tourn , tourn "a turn, trick, round, circuit, circumference," from torner, tourner "to turn" (see turn (v.)).

The sense of "a going round (a place, or from place to place), a continued ramble or excursion" is from 1640s. Compare tourism . The literal sense of "a turning round, circular movement" is rare in English and obsolete.

For Grand Tour , see grand (adj.). Tour de France as a bicycle race is attested in English by 1916 ( Tour de France Cycliste , distinguished from a motorcar race of the same name). A tour d'horizon (1952 in English) is a broad, general survey. A little tour or excursion is a tourette (1881).

1746, "travel in or about," especially "make a circuitous or prolonged journey, visiting here and there" (by 1789), from tour (n.). In reference to plays or entertainments, by 1897. Related: Toured ; touring . A touring car (1903) is one fitted for extra passengers and luggage.

In Vulgar Latin it supplanted magnus and continued in the Romanic languages. The connotations of "noble, sublime, lofty, dignified," etc., were in Latin. In English it developed a special sense of "imposing." The meaning "principal, chief, most important" (especially in titles) is from 1560s; that of "of very high or noble quality" is from 1712. As a general term of admiration, "magnificent, splendid," from 1816. Related: Grander ; grandest .

Grand jury is late 15c. Grand piano from 1797. The grand tour of the principal sites of France, Germany, Switzerland, and Italy formerly was the finishing touch in the education of a gentleman. It is attested by that name from 1660s ( making the tour is said 1652 to be a common phrase for it).

The Grand Canyon of the Colorado River in western U.S. was so called by 1869, popularized by Maj. John Wesley Powell, scientific adventurer, who explored it; earlier it had been known as Big Canyon . For grand slam see slam (n.2).

1811, "travelling for pleasure," from tour (n.) + -ism . "Orig, usually depreciatory " [OED, 1989], and marked "rare" in Century Dictionary [1891]. It was popularized by 1930 in reference to the business of attracting and providing for tourists, offering them accommodation and entertainment. Tourification (n.) for "touring, being a tourist" is attested by 1802; hence the underused verb tourify .

Behind the Meaning of John Lennon’s “Working Class Hero”

Alex Hopper

Post-Beatles, John Lennon certainly couldn’t have been considered “working class.” He was lucky enough to be apart of one of the greatest bands of all time and his bank account certainly reflected it. Nevertheless, Lennon didn’t forget about the everyman. He used his voice to fight for those that struggled to rise to the top like he did. Uncover the meaning behind “Working Class Hero,” below.

Videos by American Songwriter

Lennon released this caustic song in the early ’70s. His biting lyrics, at the same time, bolstered those in the working class and chided th e folks on the hill . After having reached the upper echelon, Lennon turns back to tell those behind him, “Hey, this isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.”

As soon as you’re born, they make you feel small By giving you no time instead of it all Till the pain is so big you feel nothing at all

Lennon often spoke about his issues with fame. He even hopped on David Bowie’s “Fame” to make a finite statement about it. In this song, he issued a warning in the form of a reality check. A working class hero is something to be , he tells his listeners. Though they likely spend their days dreaming of having what Lennon had, he argues the contrary.

A working class hero is something to be A working class hero is something to be

They hurt you at home, and they hit you at school They hate you if you’re clever, and they despise a fool Till you’re so f***ing crazy, you can’t follow their rules

When they’ve tortured and scared you for twenty-odd years Then they expect you to pick a career When you can’t really function, you’re so full of fear

“I like ‘Working Class Hero’ – as a song, or a poem or whatever it is,” he once said of this track. “I think its concept is revolutionary. It’s for the people like me who are working class, who are supposed to be processed into the middle classes, or into the machinery. It’s my experience, and I hope it’s just a warning to people.”

Check out this Lennon staple, below.

Keep you doped with religion and sex and TV And you think you’re so clever and classless and free But you’re still f***ing peasants as far as I can see

There’s room at the top they are telling you still But first you must learn how to smile as you kill If you want to be like the folks on the hill

Taylor Swift Drops ‘I Can Do It With a Broken Heart’ Music Video With ‘Eras Tour’ Backstage Footage

Taylor Swift Drops I Can Do It With a Broken Heart Music Video 309

Taylor Swift offered fans a glimpse at what goes on behind the scenes of the Eras Tour in her “I Can Do It With a Broken Heart” music video.

The pop star, 34, premiered the new video at the conclusion of her final show at Wembley Stadium in London on Tuesday, August 20, which marked the end of the European leg of the Eras Tour . After concertgoers got a first look at the venue, the video was released on YouTube at 6 p.m. ET.

Fans have been clamoring for a peek behind the curtain of the Eras Tour ever since it kicked off in March 2023, and Swift finally showed them with never-before-seen footage from backstage and rehearsals. The video saw her rolling around on a scooter and jumping on a mat underneath the stage, hiding in the infamous cleaning cart, trying on costumes, practicing her vocals and learning choreography with her backup dancers in a studio.

“I Can Do It With a Broken Heart” is the second music video from The Tortured Poets Department following the premiere of “Fortnight” with Post Malone in April shortly after the debut of Swift’s 11th album. She released “I Can Do It With a Broken Heart” — which is seemingly based on Swift’s experience carrying on with her Eras Tour performances despite previous turmoil in her personal life — as the record’s second single in July.

Swift then sang “So Long, London” for the first time during the tour as her second acoustic song.

Taylor Swift’s Opening Act Maisie Peters Seemingly Responded After Her Eras Tour Performance Was Cruelly Mocked

“Feel so bad for maisie because she achieved her dream of opening for taylor only to have haters ruin it,” one person tweeted.

On Monday, British singer Maisie Peters fulfilled her childhood dream when she performed in front of 90,000 people as an opener for Taylor Swift .

Maisie Peters in a floral dress is playing an acoustic guitar and singing into a microphone on stage, with one arm raised

Maisie took to the stage before Taylor’s other support act, Paramore , on the seventh London date of her record-breaking Eras Tour.

When Maisie’s appearance was announced earlier this month, the 24-year-old star could not contain her joy as she wrote on Instagram: “Supporting taylor swift has been my dream since i was 12 years old and watched the love story music video for the first time.”

She added at the time: “It is such an honour to be part of something so special and iconic and i already know im gonna have the time of my life :’) thank u dr @taylorswift . SCREAM !!!!!”

Then, on Sunday night, Maisie shared a video of herself being too excited to sleep ahead of the career high. This excitement continued to be palpable all through Monday, with Maisie documenting her rehearsal.

Sharing photos from the Eras Tour stage, she wrote : “Eras i’ll see u at 4:55 if i don’t pass out from excitement before then 🫶🫶🫶🫶”

And after the show, Maisie posted two photos of herself with Taylor alongside pictures of her performance, writing: “Long live 😭✨🤍 thank you @taylorswift for everything, forever <3”

She added in a separate post : “I got to live my dream last night at the eras tour, and i don’t think i’ll ever get over it :’))))) seeing so many of u singing in the crowd made my heart BURST, and then getting to scream every lyric at my first ever taylor swift show after (!!!! can u believe it!!!) was literally the most magic i’ve ever experienced.”

“It was exactly as i hoped it would be except better,” Maisie added. “I met my hero and i haven’t stopped smiling since. IDK HOW IT GETS BETTER THAN THIS FR <3333”

However, Maisie’s night was seemingly tarnished when she faced widespread mockery for a clip that she posted from her Eras Tour performance.

Maisie Peters plays guitar and leans back passionately on stage with a drummer visible in the background

In the clip, Maisie has slightly altered the lyrics to one of her biggest songs, “Lost the Breakup,” to: “You say: ‘Wow, hey, it’s been forever, you want to get a drink, like, together?’ / I say: ‘I’m kinda busy, like, I’m with Taylor tonight!’ / No shit, I won the breakup .”

The star captioned the video: “I just performed at the eras tour … if that’s not winning the breakup idk what is,” also adding: “That was so surreal eras wow thank u sm i’ll never recover from how special that was :’)))))”

However, the video did not land as anticipated, and Maisie’s vocals faced incredibly harsh criticism in the comments of her posts on both Instagram and TikTok .

Somebody else then posted the clip to X alongside the shady caption : “Is this serious?!? 😭😭😭,” where it quickly gained traction from people who were quick to join in with the ridicule.

Others leaped to Maisie’s defense, pointing out that this particular part of her song isn’t actually sung in the recording, it is spoken dialogue. They also said it is understandable that Maisie may have been nervous performing in front of so many people as the opener for her favorite artist.

“Why is everyone so mean 😭” one person commented on Maisie’s Instagram post. “We have seen Maisie live before and she sounds amazing! 🫶🏼 She clearly must’ve been nervous and SO SHE DAMN SHOULD BE we would be too if we were singing in front of Taylor on her tour HELP! ❤️”

“To all the people hating...did YOU just play the eras tour? no. you didn't. SHE DID 🥰” somebody else added.

And Maisie herself alluded to the backlash on her Instagram story, where she poignantly shared a screenshot of Taylor’s song “ Mean .”

Instagram story screenshot featuring a post from maisiehpeters with a Spotify link to "Mean (Taylor's Version)" by Taylor Swift. Taylor Swift is on the album artwork

For context, Taylor is believed to have written this song in response to music critic Bob Lefsetz giving her February 2010 performance with Stevie Nicks a cruel review.

In the review, Lefsetz claimed that Taylor couldn’t sing and, in a quote that aged particularly badly, that the performance has “shortened her career.”

Writing on her website after “Mean’s” release, Taylor said: “I get it that not everyone is going to like everything that you do, and I get that no matter what, you’re going to be criticized for something. But I also get that there are different kinds of ways to criticize someone. There is constructive criticism. There’s professional criticism. And then, there’s just being mean.”

In the song, Taylor sings: “You can take me down / With just one single blow / But you don't know what you don't know / Someday, I'll be living in a big old city / And all you're ever gonna be is mean / Someday, I'll be big enough so you can't hit me / And all you're ever gonna be is mean.”

Mean Lyrics

She later adds: “I can see you years from now in a bar / Talking over a football game / With that same big loud opinion / But nobody's listening / Washed up and ranting about the same old bitter things / Drunk and grumbling on about how I can't sing / But all you are is mean”

Needless to say, it didn’t take long for Maisie’s followers to connect the song's meaning to her current situation, and many were left heartbroken that she had been made to feel this way.

“Maisie posting ‘mean’ to her story 24 hours after she had the biggest gig of her career because some of y’all are rancid cretins who can’t keep your mouths shut for 0.2 seconds is actually so upsetting,” one popular tweet reads .

“Maisie should not have to post mean on her story a day after the best day of her career i hate all of you,” somebody else wrote .

Another added : “I saw this story and feel so bad for maisie because she achieved her dream of opening for taylor only to have haters ruin it. my heart hurts so bad for her.”

Still, Maisie seemed keen to put any upset behind her, and immediately followed up her “Mean” screenshot with a selfie and a caption about her return to supporting Noah Kahan on his UK tour.

Childish Gambino electrifies PPG Paints Arena on final tour

Alexis Papalia

Donald Glover is the definition of multitalented. He is a renowned writer, actor and director who has written for NBC’s “30 Rock,” starred in “Community” and wrote and starred in the FX series “Atlanta,” among many other projects.

When he works under his stage name — Childish Gambino — it’s all about the music.

Starting in 2008, he has rapped, sang and bent genres under that pseudonym.

On Tuesday night, Pittsburgh saw Childish Gambino perform, for what he says is the final time, at PPG Paints Arena.

The opener was another famous face. Going by only her first name, 23-year-old Willow Smith is the daughter of A-listers Will Smith and Jada Pinkett-Smith, but Willow distinguished herself from her superstar family — and her childhood forays into acting and music — in her 40-minute set of spacey, good-vibes alt-pop.

That included popular songs like “Wait A Minute!” and “Meet Me At Our Spot,” both of which blend indie rock and jazzy R&B in a chill groove perfect for opening the show. She thanked Childish Gambino for bringing her along on this tour. “He’s a visionary and a once-in-a-generation talent.”

Between sets, an array of large light rigs appeared over the audience, where they remained to cast bright white lights over the assembling crowd, until they started to flicker, appear to short out and strobe as thrumming noise rang out from the PA system. The lights pulsed faster and faster along with the humming bass until finally they went out and, on a B-stage toward the back of the floor crowd, Childish Gambino appeared, launching into the set’s first song, “Hearts Were Meant To Fly.”

The song opens his latest — and apparently final — album, which serves as the soundtrack to the film “Bando Stone and the New World,” in which Glover stars and makes his film directorial debut. He welcomed everyone to the New World Tour as red lights shone from the small stage and the industrial beat vibrated through the crowd.

“This is the last Childish Gambino tour, so I need y’all to act like it’s the last Childish Gambino tour,” he said as the crowd cheered.

He made sure it was memorable, and not just with music. The show featured innovative and jaw-dropping technical feats like lasers, pyrotechnics, and an undulating, up-and-down-moving set of light strands that cast many colors and shapes over the thrust stage. At times, they shimmered in rainbow shades like a swimming fish’s scales, like during “Survive,” and during “Got To Be,” they formed a huge red skull.

Gambino, for his part, was a ball of energy in a futuristic, lit outfit, bouncing and strutting over the thrust stage. For many songs, he was accompanied by three dancers, combining some really fun moves with a fluid, interpretive dance style.

“You still with me, Pittsburgh? This song is for people who have been in love or are in love,” he said. “If you wanna turn on your phone lights and hold them up in the air, you can. Like stars.”

The audience obliged while he slowed things down with the lovely “Steps Beach,” and the hanging lights shone in a pulse of pastel colors while the arena was lit with thousands of points of white light. It was a decidedly romantic moment.

He followed that by saying “Here’s the real test” before booming into “I. Crawl,” a scorching song with a massive chorus. When he yelled “Go!” the crowd … well, went, and the energy was palpable through the floor as thousands of fans all jumped in time to the beat.

The switches between sultry R&B tunes including “No Excuses” where Gambino channeled ’80s icons with his impressive falsetto and the brash, beat-heavy rap songs such as “Do Ya Like” were surprisingly seamless.

“This is the point in the night where I need to know if you’re a real fan or not,” he said in what must have been some dry humor, because he followed it up by booming into his biggest song to date, “This Is America.” He performed the controversial hit with just as much enthusiasm as in its iconic music video.

He once again said, “Y’all aren’t real fans, though. Do you know this one?” before “IV. Sweatpants,” a fan favorite from 2013’s “Because The Internet,” which included some impressively fast rapping, hilarious bars and great shout-along moments for the crowd to enjoy.

After that was a rapid-fire showcase of his beloved tracks, from “Sober” to “Heartbeat” to the absolutely incendiary “Bonfire.”

“Y’all are real fans! Pittsburgh! I didn’t know you had game like that!” he said as the crowd cheered.

After the rarely performed “Telegraph Ave.,” he glowed with another early career favorite, “3005,” which showed off his rapping and singing skills. The lights shimmered in every color in the midst of what would have felt like a perfect sendoff if he’d ended the night there — a timeless song that’s a little happy and a little bittersweet.

Instead, he went with the very-old-school R&B hit “Redbone,” featuring some Otis Redding-esque vocals with a modern twist, ending with a keyboard-and-drums bonanza from his band. Then all the lights went out and he ended with a simple “Thank you.”

The screens behind the stage played an actual film credits sequence, giving thanks to everyone who made the tour possible. And as all modern moviegoers know, everything has a post-credits sequence these days. His was one word on the black screen: “Lithonia?”

The crowd answered in the affirmative.

He returned to show off the latest trick he has up his sleeve. While rock elements snuck into many songs on the setlist, “Lithonia,” also from “Bando Stone and the New World,” is a straight-up burning-down-the-house rock song — and it did, in fact, do just that.

The man has range.

As the words “THE END” appeared on the screens, Childish Gambino left the stage for the last time, simply saying, “Thank you. We love you.”

Cook's tour

Definition of cook's tour, did you know.

In 1841, British missionary Thomas Cook convinced a British railway to run a special train to a temperance meeting, then proceeded to find passengers for the trip, an event regarded as the beginning of organized tourism. Within a few years, Cook was setting up excursions on a regular basis, and by the century's end, the Thomas Cook & Son travel agency was orchestrating travel around the world. The agency's tours were famously well-organized, but they were also known for herding travelers hurriedly from location to location. A Cook's tourist might see an impressive array of famous sites, but often only in superficial glimpses. Over time, English speakers started using Cook's tour for any hurried tour, and later, for any rushed activity or cursory review.
