The APGA Tour is the Advocates Pro Golf Association Tour. It is a non-profit organization founded in 2010 to provide African American and other minority golfers the opportunity to compete at the highest level of professional golf.

What Is the APGA Tour?

Since 2010, the APGA has grown from a three-tournament schedule and $40,000 in total prize money, to 18 tournaments at some of America’s most prestigious golf courses, and over $1 million in prize and bonus money in 2022.

The tour’s success has fueled individual success. Or, maybe it’s the other way around. Either way, Willie Mack III , the 2021 APGA Lexus Cup winner, made a successful Q-School run in 2022 to earn his Korn Ferry Tour card for 2023, where he is one step away from  reaching the PGA Tour .

Kenneth Bentley is the CEO of the APGA, which also cites setting members up for success in the golf industry and offering career development and mentoring opportunities to members in its mission .

APGA Tournaments

The APGA offered an elite tournament schedule in 2022 , with over $1 million in prize and bonus money across 18 tournaments. Four of those 18 tournaments had purses of $100,000 or more, including the $150,000 purse at the APGA Tour Championship. Every purse on the 2022 APGA Tour was at least $25,000.

In addition to offering a healthy financial prize for its players, the APGA competes on some of America’s most prestigious golf courses for professional golfers.

Check out some of the top courses that hosted APGA tournaments in 2022 alone.

The APGA Tour season begins in January, with the Tour Championship typically held in August, even though events run into November.

Do APGA Tour Events Get OWGR Points?

Despite the elite lineup of courses and proven talent in its events, APGA tournaments do not receive Official World Golf Ranking points. Tournaments are typically two-day, 36-hole events, which do not meet OWGR criteria. As a result, some of the most recognizable names from the APGA Tour, don’t hold impressive OWGR rankings. For example, before embarking on his first full Korn Ferry Tour season in 2023, Willie Mack III ranked 3064th in the world, with an all-time best ranking of 1685. Kamaiu Johnson, another huge APGA success, also has an all-time best OWGR of 1685.

In 2021, Willie Mack III earned a scholarship to Korn Ferry Tour Qualifying School by winning the 2021 APGA Tour Lexus Cup. While Mack’s Q-School bid came ended in the second stage in 2021, he made it all the way through in 2022 to secure his 2023 Korn Ferry Tour card.

APGA Tour Farmers Insurance Invitational

Since 2020, Farmers Insurance has hosted the APGA Invitational and the PGA Tour’s Farmers Insurance Open simultaneously at Torrey Pines, and in 2022, the event became the first-ever APGA tournament to be broadcast on national television, appearing on the Golf Channel.

The tournament, which kicks off the APGA season in January, includes 18 APGA Tour players who qualified via the previous season’s Lexus Cup points list, and offers an enticing $100,000 purse and a $30,000 winner’s check.

APGA Tour pro crushed by recent golf setback scores his biggest win at Torrey Pines

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2024/michael-herrera-farmers.jpg

Michael Herrera holds the trophy he won in the APGA Farmers Insurance Invitational. (Tod Leonard)

SAN DIEGO — Michael Herrera had 14 long hours on the flight home from Thailand to process the crushing disappointment. Just over a week ago, the California mini-tour pro missed a six-foot birdie putt on the last of 80 holes in Asian Tour Q School to miss full status by one shot. It would have been an enormous career boost to a 25-year-old who only began playing serious competitive golf in high school.

“It just proves there’s going to be adversity, it doesn’t matter where you are in the world,” Herrera said. “You have to be able to take the punch, and like Rocky says, stand back up.”

Herrera returned home from Asia to Moreno Valley, Calif., last Sunday, fought off his jet lag most of the week, and then got back into the ring. On the Torrey Pines municipal courses on which he played via a sponsor's exemption in last year’s PGA Tour Farmers Insurance Open (and barely missed the cut), Herrera entered the 36-hole Advocates Professional Golf Association (APGA) Tour’s Farmers Insurance Invitational. The event is played on the North Course on Saturday of the Farmers Open and moves to the South on Sunday, with the same setup that featured Frenchman Matthieu Pavon capturing his first PGA Tour title the day before.

The good and bad experiences build on each other, and both the setback in Asia and the positive past experience at Torrey Pines all melded for Herrera over two days. He shot 72 on the North Course on Saturday, and then battled to a two-over-par 74 on the difficult South on Sunday to finish at two-over 146 and beat Floridians Kamaiu Johnson (72) and John-Baptiste Hakizimana (72) by one shot.

The victory, worth $30,000 to Herrara out of a $100,000 total purse, was his fourth on the APGA—all coming at PGA Tour venues. His maiden APGA win was at Torrey Pines, followed by victories at TPC Scottsdale and Bermuda, where Herrera won last fall to earn an exemption into the 2024 Butterfield Bermuda Championship.

Sunday’s victory was a family affair for Herrera, with his longtime girlfriend, Tyler, on his bag and his parents, Hugo and Jelin, and 13-year-old sister, Vivian watching from behind the ropes. In the aftermath, Tyler held their 20-month-old son, Leon James, at her hip as Michael accepted the trophy.

“Playing the Farmers last year, it was huge, confidence-wise,” said a beaming Hugo Herrera. “He felt like now he can compete with these guys and play these courses, too.”

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2024/michael-herrera-billy-horschel.jpg

Another happy spectator in the aftermath was PGA Tour player Billy Horschel, who served as an on-course Golf Channel commentator on Sunday. He also has been a key supporter of the APGA with his sponsorship of the tour’s biggest invitational.

“When I first saw Michael three years ago at my event, there were a couple of guys I felt like had the talent to be on the Korn Ferry Tour or PGA Tour within five years. Michael was one of those guys,” Horschel said. “He’s gotten better every day, and that shows with him winning here. He’s got the ability; it’s about learning to be more consistent, day in and day out, continuing to improve on his strengths. And, mentally, believing in himself.” Herrera, who has once reached the PGA Tour’s Q School Second Stage, has a unique golf background. In a 2023 Golf Digest profile, he spoke of his love for basketball, and though he was curious about golf, his father denied him from playing for a long time because he saw the game as strictly a “white man’s sport.” Michael finally wore his dad down, and after they took up the game together, they were hooked.

A high school hoops star, Michael still dreamed of playing professional basketball until he sat the bench at Riverside City College, where he eventually transferred over to the golf team. He left school early and decided to turn pro, and in a happenstance meeting at a celebrity event, Herrera met NFL Hall of Famer Ronnie Lott, who was so taken by the young man that he offered to sponsor him. That support allowed Herrera to play on and excel on the APGA.

Herrera posted a handful of top-five finishes on the APGA last season and capped the year with the Bermuda win. He sees himself as a far different player, mentally, than a year ago at this time.

“I had a different demeanor,” he of the time that followed the Farmers, in which he shot 72-75. “I try to be humble, and I love everybody out here. But when you get that experience and you’re standing on the driving range next to the best players in the world, and it shows you that you can compete with them, it feels a lot different standing on the tee box.”

In looking forward to this year, Herrera said he will play early events on the APGA, try some tour Monday qualifiers, and head to Asia in May to play on the developmental tour there. His commitment to reaching the next level is obvious.

“When you go into an arena that you’re not comfortable with,” Horschel observed, “and you don’t know how things are going to go … the more you’re there the more you’re going to feel like you belong. It shows you where you are in the game, and it continues to fuel the fire of working hard to get to where you want to be.”

How to watch CBS Sports Network's 'Up and Down: Life on the APGA Tour'

The series will follow minority golfers on the apga tour living their dreams of playing professional golf.

gettyimages-1226012193-2.jpg

CBS Sports Network will air a new installment of 'Up and Down: Life on the APGA Tour' this Wednesday night. The series provides a behind-the-scenes look at several different players on the Advocates Professional Golf Association (APGA) Tour, which helps minority golfers prepare to compete on the PGA Tour as they further their golf career.

The new special will premiere on CBS Sports Network at 9:00 p.m. ET on Wednesday, Aug. 23 and will "follow five golfers as they embark on their professional and personal pursuits." The APGA Tour was established in 2010 with the goal of increasing diversity in golf by helping African American and other minority players get ready to play on the PGA Tour.

This installment of the show will follow five different golfers as they try to achieve their PGA Tour dreams. John Baptiste Hakizimana, Joseph Dent, Wyatt Worthington, Aaron Grimes and Troy Taylor II will all be featured on the show.

Hakizimana is a Rwandan player who grew up playing golf with a stick and a rock. Hakizimana immigrated to the United States after losing his father and three siblings as a child, and he has overcome that immense tragedy to play the sport he loves professionally.

Dent is the son of former PGA Tour pro Jim Dent Sr., and he is trying to follow in his father's footsteps by breaking into the tour himself.

Worthington is one of the best players on the APGA Tour, and the show will follow him as he tries to make the 2023 PGA Championship cut after missing out in 2022.

Grimes hails from Compton, Calif., and in addition to reaching new heights in his golfing career, he also has a personal mission of refurbishing his hometown golf course in hopes of growing the game within his community.

Taylor II played golf at Michigan State and seems like a promising player on the APGA Tour. The show will feature Taylor II, his father and former Ohio State basketball player Troy Taylor, and ex-NBA star Clark Kellogg as the three friends play a round of golf while discussing the importance of diversity on the course.

Can this pga tour event find another sponsor before next season the pressure is on, share this article.

As the 12th and final year of sponsorship for Wayne Sanderson Farms at Mississippi’s only PGA Tour event is nearing an end, there is no better way to find a new sponsor than to show off at this year’s tournament.

Wayne Sanderson Farms’ run as a full partner with Jackson and its PGA tournament has been a historic one.

However, the 2024 Sanderson Farm Championship will be the last for the company as the title sponsor of the Jackson PGA Tour stop.

While its contract runs through 2026, the company decided in August to move on as the title sponsor, but remain as a major sponsor for the tournament, which is held at the Country Club of Jackson.

That leaves tournament director Steve Jent searching for a 2025 and beyond sponsor as this year’s tournament gears up to kick off next week.

“I feel really good in general for next week. The weather looks great. It’s going to be a chamber of commerce type setting, for sure,” Jent told the Clarion Ledger.

Also, Jent believes the tournament is on track for its main job, which is raising money for charity. He said early returns look like last year when the tournament helped raise $1.5 million in charitable impact benefiting Children’s of Mississippi and other Mississippi charities.

Since becoming title sponsor in 2013, the Sanderson Farms Championship has raised more than $17 million for charity including Children’s of Mississippi and other Mississippi-based causes.

“With both Mississippi State and Ole Miss on the road next week and with the weather looking great, that should help our crowds,” Jent said. “So, yeah, I feel great about next week.”

But as much as great weather and great crowds and a great field of players will make this year’s tournament great, making this year’s tournament great is important in showing a potential new sponsor the value of signing on for the future.

“We are still working on what 2025 looks like, and we still have some time to figure that out,” Jent said. “But yes, we want to use next week to entertain anyone that might be interested in being the title sponsor. Having said that, the clock doesn’t run out after the tournament ends next week. We have time still to work with the PGA tournament and come up with just the right plan.”

Sanderson Farms history

Mississippi has been a PGA stop since 1968 when the tournament was known as the Magnolia Classic and was played in Hattiesburg. The tournament has had several names and sponsors over the years, including the Deposit Guaranty Classic from 1986–1998, the Farm Bureau Classic from 1999–2006 and the Viking Classic from 2007–2011. In 2012, it was called the True South Classic because it didn’t have a title sponsor. Sanderson Farms has sponsored the tournament since 2013.

Sanderson Farms also spearheaded to the move from Annandale Golf Course in Madison to the Country Club of Jackson, which continues to be recognized as one of the top courses in the nation.

The tournament has a $7.6 million purse with a $1.368 million winner’s share. Luke List is the defending champion and the Sanderson Farms Championship has a field of 132 players and a cut to 70 players.

What’s next?

Despite the uncertain future of the tournament at the moment, Jent said the future is still bright.

“I believe this cat still has some of its nine lives left,” he said. “Over the course of the history of this tournament, it has definitely seen worse days. I think we’ve built something, between Century Club and our sponsors and everyone that has volunteers, we have built something that will be appealing to someone out there that wants to be our next title sponsor.”

With that in mind, Jent has every intention of putting the tournament’s best foot forward for next week.

“This is a great showcase for us, there is no doubt,” Jent said. “Not only is this a great showcase to the world for Mississippi, it’s a lot of fun. There are great parties, a great atmosphere and great golf. You can cut any way you want to, but there will be 132 of the greatest players in the world here in Mississippi next week. Who wouldn’t want to be a part of that. I think that is how we are really approaching everything.”

Why did the PGA Tour and LIV Golf merge? Here's a full breakdown

Everything you need to know about the pga tour and liv golf merger is right here, by logan reardon • published june 6, 2023 • updated on june 6, 2023 at 12:05 pm.

The golf world was stunned on Tuesday morning.

In a shocking twist, the PGA Tour announced it would merge with the controversial LIV Golf in order to "unify the game of golf." The merger also includes the DP World Tour, which is the PGA's European Tour.

Tuesday's news answers the question of will LIV Golf survive, as the Saudi-backed tour struggled to maintain relevance despite heavy funding and the signings of star players.

24/7 New York news stream: Watch NBC 4 free wherever you are

Here's a full breakdown of the merger, including details on LIV Golf and what happens next:

When did LIV Golf form?

LIV Golf was founded in 2021 before playing its inaugural season in 2022.

Get Tri-state area news delivered to your inbox. Sign up for NBC New York's News Headlines newsletter.

The tour was owned by the Public Investment Fund, which is Saudi Arabia's sovereign wealth fund. Two-time major champion Greg Norman served as CEO and the public face of the league.

Why did LIV golfers leave the PGA?

There were a few benefits for players joining LIV Golf.

First and foremost, golfers received massive money from the PIF. Phil Mickelson reportedly signed a $200 million contract to join LIV, while Dustin Johnson ($150 million), Bryson DeChambeau ($125 million), Brooks Koepka ($100 million) and Cameron Smith ($100 million) also reached nine-figure bonuses.

After signing their contracts just to join, players were awarded increased prize money during their tournaments. It was a clear message to the PGA Tour that players felt they were not being compensated fairly.

Beyond just the money, there were several other benefits that players saw with LIV. They played fewer tournaments each year (14 were scheduled for 2023 compared to 47 PGA events), with smaller fields and three rounds instead of four in each tournament.

LIV also utilized shotgun starts, meaning that every player began their round at the same time on different holes -- which meant the days were shorter.

What is the LIV Golf controversy?

The concern about LIV Golf was always about where the money came from.

Saudi Arabia funded the tour. Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has been involved in multiple controversies, including human rights violations of his own people, the murder of Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi and the government's alleged involvement in the Sept. 11 attacks in the U.S.

The ethics of players taking money from the country has been debated endlessly since players started defecting. Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods have both been outspoken against the league, with the latter reportedly turning down between $700 and $800 million to join.

The PGA's rival tour is coming to an end but let's look back at some of the highlights over the last two years.

LIV Golf Announces TV Partnership With CW Network

While PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan previously condemned LIV Golf and discouraged players from taking their money, the merger seems to be a sellout of sorts. As part of the agreement, the PIF will contribute a "significant financial investment, toward minority equity ownership of a new, collectively held, for-profit LLC." The PIF will make a financial investment to become a premier corporate sponsor of the PGA Tour and DP World Tour.

What happens with PGA and LIV lawsuits now?

As part of the merger, PGA and LIV mutually agreed to end all pending litigation between the parties.

LIV sued the PGA last year for allegedly engaging in monopolistic behavior by creating rules intended to stop golfers from playing in rival leagues. PGA sought subpoenas for a countersuit alleging that LIV illegally pushed players to break contracts with the PGA by offering exorbitant sums of money.

The case was expected to go to trial next May, but that obviously will not happen after the merger.

What happens to PGA and LIV golfers now?

Here's what was said in the official announcement :

"The three organizations will work cooperatively and in good faith to establish a fair and objective process for any players who desire to re-apply for membership with the PGA TOUR or the DP World Tour following the completion of the 2023 season and for determining fair criteria and terms of re-admission, consistent with each Tour's policies."

LIV Golfers were already eligible to play in major championships, so the merger doesn't change anything there. Koepka became the first LIV Golf player to win a major when he triumphed at the PGA Championship last month.

Will this upcoming event generate more interest than the Presidents Cup?

As the Presidents Cup gets underway at Royal Montreal Golf Club, two long-time golf broadcasters wonder if the biennial event will generate as much interest as another, smaller showdown that’s scheduled a few months from now.

“Everybody’s looking right now to December to see the match between LIV and the [PGA Tour], with the four best players,” said Gary McCord on the latest episode of “ Kostis & McCord: Off Their Rockers ,” a GOLF production. “I think that’s taking precedent over everything at this point.”

McCord was referring to the previously announced Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler vs. Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka match , which will take place on a December date to be announced in Las Vegas. While McCord’s assertion that the upcoming match consists of the game’s four best players is obviously his opinion, it’s certainly not far off, especially when it comes to star power and name recognition. But it’s also the first time these made-for-TV matches will have a PGA Tour vs. LIV angle.

Sungjae Im of the the International Team and Tom Kim of the International Team react to the crowd on the first tee during Four-Ball on day one of the 2024 Presidents Cup at The Royal Montreal Golf Club on September 26, 2024 in Montreal, Quebec. (

‘That’s disrespectful’: Etiquette breach spices up Presidents Cup match

“I realize it’s not apples and oranges because one is an 18-hole match and the other is over [four] days, but I’m going to be really interested to see what the TV ratings are between those two,” Peter Kostis said. “We’ll see how much interest there is.”

McCord said he thinks part of the reason December’s match was scheduled was due to players’ frustration over golf’s divide, and the fact that a deal is still not in place to bring the sport together.

“I think basically the four best players in the world are getting tired of this crap going on,” McCord said. “We don’t know what happened a couple of weeks ago when everybody met in New York to see if they could hammer out something. No one has heard anything, as always. So I think these four guys are like, alright, the hell with that, we are going to do this match and see how it goes. And we’re also going to go and have TNT do it, who is not really one of the title sponsors on the PGA Tour. And if I was a sponsor on the PGA Tour and I saw my TV ratings go down and now I saw the four best players in the world getting ready to do a made-for-television event with TNT doing it — and if these numbers did anywhere near the last-day numbers of any of the four majors — there is going to be some hooting and hollering about what are you guys doing at PGA Tour headquarters at Ponte Vedra.”

At the Irish Open a few weeks ago, McIlroy said the match wasn’t meant to send a message.

“You’ve got the best player in the world. You’ve got two guys in Bryson and Brooks that have won majors in the last two years. You’ve got me in there who, I haven’t done what those guys have done the last couple years, but I’ve definitely been I feel one of the best players in the world,” McIlroy said. “It’s a way to show golf fans in the world that this is what could happen or these are the possibilities going forward. I’ve been saying this for a long time: I think golf and golf fans get to see us together more than four times a year.”

McCord put a bow on his thoughts, saying, “I think these four guys are just pressing a pedal right now to get something done.”
