Icehouse and Simple Minds To Reunite For Red Hot Summer 2024 Tour

by Paul Cashmere on July 30, 2023

in News , Noise Pro

Red Hot Summer will recreate the historic 1981 touring line-up with Icehouse and Simple Minds together again on the same bill.

In 1981 Icehouse toured the UK for the first time supporting Simple Minds. The favour was reversed when on the Australian leg of the same tour, Simple Minds toured Australia for the first time opening for Icehouse.

Jim Kerr said, “we had the best time during that six-week period, and we’re ecstatic to be able to come back and to do it all over again with our mates, Icehouse! We love everything about this band and Australia. We are always welcomed with open arms and have such a special bond with our Aussie fans. We can’t wait to get back there and play in some of the best outdoor locations in your beautiful country.”

Iva Davies said, “back in 1981, on ICEHOUSE’s first journey overseas, we were introduced to Simple Minds and their great stage presence when we went on the same tour supporting them around the UK. It was an exciting time and we all got on so well that we asked Simple Minds to support us when we returned to Australia. They did and Australians became one of the most welcoming audiences in the world for them. I’m really looking forward to our co-headlining tour next year – it will be an opportunity to relive some memories and thrilling to see how far we’ve all come since those first shows.”

For 2024, The Red Hot Summer tour series two will feature the two bands together again with Noiseworks, Daryl Braithwaite and Bachelor Girl also on the line-up.

The Living End are an Australian punk rock band formed in 1994. Since 2002 the line-up consists of Chris Cheney, Scott Owen and Andy Strachan. The band rose to fame in 1997 after the release of their double A-sided single, “Second Solution” / “Prisoner of Society”. They have released eight studio albums and have had two No. 1 debuts on the Australian Albums Aria Chart.  They have also gained chart success in the United States and United Kingdom.  The Living End are one of Australia’s most ferocious live acts, consistently headlining festivals around the country. Their blistering live performances have earned the band an enviable position of one of Australia’s greatest live bands.

Birds of Tokyo have grown from independent roots to become one of this country’s most popular rock bands.  The Perth five piece have released three chart topping albums driven by top 10 hits like ‘Good Lord’, ‘Plans’, ‘Unbreakable” and ‘Lanterns’.  One of Triple J’s three most played artists of this millennium, they are also the only artist in history to win ‘Rock Work of the Year’ on five separate occasions at the APRA Awards. Having performed twice at the AFL Grand Final and the NRL’s “State Of Origin”, and toured as special guests for everyone from Muse and Bon Jovi to Midnight Oil and Cold Chisel, Birds Of Tokyo’s songs have become a soundtrack for contemporary Australia.

Multi-platinum selling Pete Murray has released 7 albums and 2 EPs over an impressive career and is one of only a few Australian artists with over 1.2 million album sales under his belt, receiving 17 ARIA nominations throughout his career. Murray’s first three albums all reached #1 on the Australian music charts and his first album FEELER reached number 1 and remained in the Top 100 for two and a half years. BEST OF is a collection of Murray’s most popular singles of the past 20 years.

There’s a moment in most artists’ young lives when they realise music will shape their future and define who they are. Kasey Chambers didn’t have to wait for that moment to arrive. Music is part of her DNA. The Captain (1999) remains one of the most extraordinary and lauded debuts by an Australian artist in any genre. Songs such as the title track, ‘Cry Like a Baby’ and ‘These Pines’ boast a maturity beyond her years and a wealth of Americana-styled musical influences, yet the album has Australia and family at its core, ingredients that have been a staple of Kasey’s songwriting ever since then. Greater success was to follow. Barricades & Brickwalls (2001), Kasey’s second album, broke more ground, winning best album at the 2002 ARIAs and landing her at the top of the pop charts in Australia and the third album, Wayward Angel (2004) was another monster success, going straight to No.1 in Australia and producing a string of singles. Further successful albums followed with Carnival (2006), Rattlin’ Bones (2008), Kasey Chambers, Poppa Bill and the Little Hillbillies (2009), Little Bird (2010), and Storybook .

Born into Australian rock royalty and influenced by the music her father, Jimmy Barnes, recorded and played, Mahalia naturally began singing at a very young age. As an artist, she’s drawn to guitar-driven gutsy soul, rock and blues, and is inspired by acts like Ike and Tina Turner and legendary queen of soul Aretha Franklin.

Before the pandemic shut down so much of the live performance industry, Mahalia Barnes  and The Soul Mates toured Australia non-stop, playing supports for the likes of US hip hop greats The Roots, Lionel Richie, UK singer James Morrison and gospel/soul legend Mavis Staples, as well as playing festivals and headline shows of their own.

RED HOT SUMMER   TOUR  is thrilled to announce its next series of dates for the 2024 season from one of Australia’s most sought-after summer festivals.  These iconic outdoor shows will take place centre stage in Mornington, Yarra Valley, Bribie Island & Perth, and for series two, this mega-line-up will be co-headlined by SIMPLE MINDS  and ICEHOUSE .

It’s been over 40 years since Scottish superstars, SIMPLE MINDS, toured Australia for the first time in 1981 when they were invited by their good friends, ICEHOUSE. History repeats itself as they come together on stage all these decades later.  Says Jim Kerr, “ we had the best time during that six-week period, and we’re ecstatic to be able to come back and to do it all over again with our mates, Icehouse!  We love everything about this band and Australia. We are always welcomed with open arms and have such a special bond with our Aussie fans.  We can’t wait to get back there and play in some of the best outdoor locations in your beautiful country.”

Iva Davies  went on to say “back in 1981, on ICEHOUSE’s first journey overseas, we were introduced to Simple Minds and their great stage presence when we went on the same tour supporting them around the UK.

With a career spanning over 45 years, ICEHOUSE is one of Australia’s most iconic bands, transcending age groups with their hit songs, well known and loved by audiences across generations, playing to sell-out, capacity audiences in Australia, New Zealand and throughout the world.  Formed by Iva Davies, the band’s frontman and musical creative force, ICEHOUSE went on to have an amazing 28 Platinum albums, eight Top 10 albums and over thirty Top 40 singles.

red hot summer tour series 2

ICEHOUSE’s unofficial Australian anthem, Great Southern Land, has been a part of almost every Australian’s summer soundtrack for the past 40 years and in 2014, it was inducted into the National Film and Sound Archive’s Sounds of Australia registry. It’s also been remixed a number of times, most notably Bill Laswell’s  The Great Southern Mix , clocking in at almost 16 minutes, and the  Byrralku Dhangudha remix  from 1994, which features Indigenous musicians playing and singing the chorus in their own language. Its message is as current and relevant today as it was when it first appeared.

In 2017, the band received another tribute when Qantas invited the public to vote for the names of the planes for their new fleet of Dreamliner 787-9s. Out of over 60,000 name suggestions submitted, Great Southern Land won the honour of the very first plane in the fleet being named after the iconic hit.  In the same year, ICEHOUSE also celebrated 40 years of live performance with a national Australian tour and several outdoor performances in New Zealand and has continued to perform selected concerts for sell-out audiences in both countries since then.

SIMPLE MINDS are one of the UK’s most successful bands that have achieved worldwide success. Having sold over 60 million albums, they have experienced a remarkable journey since releasing their debut album  Life In A Day  in 1979. Over the course of their stunning career, SIMPLE MINDS have sold out stadiums and arenas across the globe. Constantly evolving, the band’s rousing choruses and booming atmospherics made them one of the most iconic bands of the 80s. Their trademark sound has earned them massive hits – with songs such as  Promised You A Miracle, Glittering Prize, Don’t You (Forget About Me), Alive and Kicking, Sanctify Yourself, Belfast Child  and  Let There Be Love  dominating the airwaves   globally .

A ustralia was the first country in the world, outside of the UK, to embrace SIMPLE MINDS, giving the band its first-ever hit single  Love Song  and first gold album ‘New Gold Dream (81-82-83-84)’. The love affair has continued ever since.

red hot summer tour series 2

NOISEWORKS  provided the soundtrack to every big night in the 1980s, with rock anthems  No Lies, Take Me Back, Hot Chilli Woman, Touch , and countless others. Get ready to rock as the original members reform to honour the memory of their co-founder and guitarist, the late, great, Stuart ‘Chet’ Fraser. Jon Stevens, Steve Balbi, Kevin Nicol, and Justin Stanley will be joined by very special guest Jack Jones on guitar and vocals. With the release of their new 2022 album, along with all their legendary hits, Noiseworks will reignite a passion for rock n roll!

DARYL BRAITHWAITE  is an iconic Australian singer/songwriter and ARIA Hall Of Fame Inductee. As the frontman and vocalist for the 1970s band Sherbet, Braithwaite rode a wave of local and international success with songs such as  Howzat  and  Summer Love  propelling the band to superstar status.

Braithwaite went on to embark on a highly successful solo career which included a No. 1 ARIA Album Chart for his album Edge (1988), featuring the hit singles  As The Days Go By  and  One Summer . Braithwaite’s 1990 follow-up album Rise included the single  The Horses  which reached No. 1 on the ARIA Singles Chart and to this day remains an anthem for generations of Australians. In 2020, he joined a host of local and international artists to perform at Fire Fight Australia, Concert For National Bushfire Relief in front of an audience in excess of 70,000 at Sydney’s ANZ Stadium.

In 1992, Tania Doko and James Roche formed  BACHELOR GIRL , and the duo became one of the most loved Australian acts of the 90s & early 2000s, enjoying Australian and international success in Asia, Scandinavia and the US (including signing with the legendary Clive Davis at Arista Records). Standing out with their exceptional song writing and Tania’s warm, powerful vocal, both PPCA and APRA have reported a massive achievement for the band – their hit single  Buses and Trains  was the most played Australian composition on Australian radio in its first year of release and during the last 25 years overall. In 1999,  Buses and Trains  also received the coveted APRA ‘Song of the Year’ award, while the critically acclaimed debut album ‘Waiting for the Day’ spawned five chart-topping, radio-friendly singles (including  Treat Me Good  and  Permission To Shine ), reached double platinum certification and an ARIA win to the duo for ‘Producer of the Year’.

After a brief hiatus to pursue their individual musical paths as writers and producers for outside artists in Sweden and the U.K, Tania and James reunited to release their socially conscious single  Speak , in 2018. With their hit-studded and dynamic live set, Bachelor Girl have secured impressive support slots, including international heavyweights Eurythmics and The Goo Goo Dolls. More recently, the band has special guested on widely popular festival gigs such as Day on the Green (with John Farnham, Daryl Braithwaite et al.), the Red Hot Summer tour, and can also add Icehouse to the list of iconic acts they have toured with.

RED HOT SUMMER TOUR (SERIES TWO) LINE-UP UNVEILED

RED HOT SUMMER   TOUR  is thrilled to announce its next series of dates for the 2024 season from one of Australia’s most sought-after summer festivals.  These iconic outdoor shows will take place centre stage in Mornington, Yarra Valley, Bribie Island & Perth, and for series two, this mega-line-up will be co-headlined by  SIMPLE MINDS  and  ICEHOUSE.

It’s been over 40 years since Scottish superstars,  SIMPLE MINDS,  toured Australia for the first time in 1981 when they were invited by their good friends,  ICEHOUSE . History repeats itself as they come together on stage all these decades later.  Says  Jim Kerr , “ we had the best time during that six-week period, and we’re ecstatic to be able to come back and to do it all over again with our mates, Icehouse!  We love everything about this band and Australia. We are always welcomed with open arms and have such a special bond with our Aussie fans.  We can’t wait to get back there and play in some of the best outdoor locations in your beautiful country.”

red hot summer tour series 2

Iva Davies  went on to say  “b ack in 1981, on ICEHOUSE’s first journey overseas, we were introduced to Simple Minds and their great stage presence when we went on the same tour supporting them around the UK.

With a career spanning over 45 years,  ICEHOUSE  is one of Australia’s most iconic bands, transcending age groups with their hit songs, well known and loved by audiences across generations, playing to sell-out, capacity audiences in Australia, New Zealand and throughout the world.  Formed by  Iva Davies , the band’s frontman and musical creative force,  ICEHOUSE  went on to have an amazing 28 Platinum albums, eight Top 10 albums and over thirty Top 40 singles.

A ustralia was the first country in the world, outside of the UK, to embrace  SIMPLE MINDS , giving the band its first-ever hit single  Love Song  and first gold album ‘New Gold Dream (81-82-83-84)’. The love affair has continued ever since.

Standing out with their exceptional songwriting and  Tania’s  warm, powerful vocal, both PPCA and APRA have reported a massive achievement for the band – their hit single  Buses and Trains  was the most played Australian composition on Australian radio in its first year of release and during the last 25 years overall.

Rochford Wines

34 degree temperature and blistering sun didn’t hold the crowd back from Rochford Wines’ picturesque landscape on Sunday afternoon.

Bachelor Girl appeared just before 1pm with the sun’s first casualty: keyboardist James Roche’s iPad had shut down due to the heat prior to the first tune of the day. They pressed on regardless, opening the event with ‘Blown Away’. Technical issues during ‘Permission to Shine’ caused some angst, but Tania Doko continued on, and the rest of the set went along without a hitch, delighting the fans in the massive crowd with singable hits performed flawlessly.

Next up to the plate was Daryl Braithwaite, who struggled through his set, both with engaging the crowd (who seemed to only want to hear ‘Horses’) and with his diminishing vocal range. A number of Braithwaite’s songs are no longer singable for him in their original key – something that should be rectified if he wants to continue performing. One rather comical moment was when he tried to teach the crowd to sing a backing vocal line, which required holding one note for an extended period of time, in 34 degree heat… (what could go wrong?)

Noiseworks took to the stage next, and ramped up the volume and energy with ‘Touch’. Jon Stevens’ vocals seem to never waver, regardless of age. Blessed with a range that most 20 year olds would dream of, he remains Australia’s top rock voice, and heading back into Noiseworks territory allowed him to really take it for a spin. This set was the first to really get the crowd engaged, and it felt at this point like the show was truly underway. A rendition of ‘Heart and Soul’ dedicated to Stuart Fraser was a touching moment, and the finishing of the set with ‘No Lies’, ‘Hot Chilli Woman’ and Zeppelin’s ‘Rock and Roll’ built the rock vibes to full throttle. Noiseworks may have been around for almost 40 years, but they are just as rocking as ever.

Cue Iva Davies heading up Icehouse for another trip down memory lane… this set was full of hits, which is not difficult with a back catalogue as huge as theirs. The crowd loved joining in for this whole set, and because Davies performs his songs as they were recorded, they were singable for the now loosened-up punters. Once again, Michael Paynter shone in Icehouse’s set, playing keys, guitar and singing BVs, and when he stepped into lead vocal for Man of Colours particularly (allowing Iva Davies to play oboe), he made the tune absolutely mesmerizing. The song of the set though, was ‘Hey Little Girl’ with its full sound, and brooding vibe.

The headliner was now poised for an engaging set, with a lubricated audience, and the sun finally retreating a little to provide some weather relief. Simple Minds took a bow before beginning their set, and the crowd were up on their feet ready to party. It was relatively short-lived however, as the engagement factor by this band never really got past 3 rd gear. Opening with ‘Waterfront’, the crowd were keen, but the energy waned for the rest of the set, until finally lifting for the song everyone had been waiting for ‘Don’t you (forget about me)’. Their other main hits ‘Alive and Kicking’ and ‘Sanctify Yourself’ were kept til the encore, but would’ve been better placed to keep the audience’s interest and energy up earlier in the set. Even Jim Kerr (vocalist) could sense the crowd’s energy waning as he kept repeating ‘we’re just getting warmed up’, again and again, up until there were only two tunes left in their set. Simple Minds seem to perform their songs with new arrangements and different melodic choices, which means those who know their songs are unable to sing along, and the songs felt unrecognizable. Their set was fine for a fan, but they had trouble keep a crowd of ‘general 90s music enthusiasts’ engaged.

All in all, the Red Hot Summer show was an enjoyable afternoon out in the Yarra Valley sun. Noiseworks and Icehouse brought the performances of the day.

RED HOT SUMMER SERIES 2 ANNOUNCED

red hot summer tour series 2

Hot on the heels of the announcement of Series One of the RED HOT SUMMER TOUR, the festival promoters are excited to announce Series Two featuring the Ultimate Rock N Roll Line-Up. Kicking off in February 2019, Series Two of the coveted touring festival will see the return of the Queen of Rock Suzi Quatro , with special guests The Angels, Baby Animals, The Screaming Jets, Jon Stevens, Moving Pictures and Chocolate Starfish . The month-long run will visit South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria, Australian Capital Territory, New South Wales and Queensland.

Promoter Duane McDonald says the decision to bring Suzi Quatro back to Australia for Series Two of the RED HOT SUMMER TOUR in 2019 was an easy one. “Suzi is the Queen of Rock and audiences have always loved when she is part of the tour,” he says. “We are thrilled to have her return to play these special venues. To have such a top icon on top of this incredible bill certainly makes this one of the hottest shows this summer. This really is the ultimate rock n roll line-up – we can’t wait to head out for these shows, they are going to go off!”

After sold-out tours in 2014 and again in 2018, Suzi Quatro is back by popular demand to headline this ultimate rock n roll line-up. There are few female performers who have a career as successful and versatile as Suzi Quatro. When it comes to summing up her decades of music, there is no better way than to quote Suzi directly – “I will retire when I go onstage, shake my ass and there is silence”. It’s no surprise then to find out that Suzi has never stopped working in one guise or another, whether it is playing her solo rock show to packed houses, hosting her own show on the BBC Radio 2, performing on the West End or penning hit songs. To date, this enigmatic performer has sold over 55 million records, in fact, for a seven-year period in the 1970s she was featured in the British charts for an incredible 101 weeks. Her hits include The Wild One, 48 Crash, Devil Gate Drive, She’s in Love with You and If You Can’t Give Me Love to name a few.

When it comes to great Aussie rock, it doesn’t come much better than The Angels. It’s been over four decades since brothers Rick and John Brewster co-founded the iconic band and have penned some of Australia’s most anthemic tracks. The Angels are widely reputed for their killer live shows. With hits like Long Line, Marseille, Be With You, After the Rain, Shadow Boxer and Mr Damage to name a few. Recently they have been celebrating the 40th anniversary of their seminal album Face To Face with a massive sold-out national tour. Audiences need to get ready to rock when The Angels take to the stage at the 2019 RED HOT SUMMER TOUR.

red hot summer tour series 2

Baby Animals burst onto the Australian scene in the 1990s with a solid rock force and a sassy lead singer. Suze DeMarchi proved that girls could rock just as hard as guys and the Baby Animals soon kicked some impressive rock butt with hits such as Rush You, Early Warning and One Word. The band scored themselves ARIA awards for best album and toured the globe. When they split in the mid-1990s they ended a special era of Australian music. The band’s recent reformation and inclusion again on the RED HOT SUMMER TOUR line-up is a rare chance for music fans to see their original rock at its best.

Aussie rock doesn’t get much more powerful than The Screaming Jets. After celebrating their 25th anniversary in 2014, they released a long-player of all new material in 2016 – Chrome – an album which showed the band were still rockin’ as hard as when they first crashed onto the scene in Newcastle back in 1989. In 2018 the band are gearing up for another album release – Gotcha Covered – which hits the shelves in July. With a swag of hits such as Better, Helping Hand, Sad Song, October Grey and Come On under their belt, The Screaming Jets are renowned for their pumpin’ live performances. They will certainly rock the RED HOT SUMMER TOUR in 2019.

For lovers of great music, a concert experience with Jon Stevens is up there with the very best. From his Noiseworks days – and hits such as Welcome To The World, No Lies, Touch and Hot Chilli Woman – to fronting The Dead Daisies and INXS, he has made an indelible impact with his amazing vocals. Jon also has an incredible solo catalogue, the most recent of which Starlight saw him do a run of sold-out dates last year. His live shows are dynamic, high energy and will keep audiences on their feet. Music fans are in for a treat as Jon takes RED HOT SUMMER TOUR audiences through his repertoire in 2019.

Moving Pictures are one of those bands whose songs are part of the Australian psyche. Their 1980s classic What About Me epitomised Australian music at the time. Their debut album Days of Innocence was a chart topper both in Australia and overseas. The group disbanded in the late 1980s but reformed again recently much to audiences delight! Their return to the RED HOT SUMMER TOUR line-up in 2019 is highly anticipated.

For music lovers looking for a special bit of concert showmanship, then look no further than Chocolate Starfish. Fronted by the enigmatic Adam Thompson, the band is known for their high energy live performances. With songs like Four Letter Word, Mountain and You’re So Vain, Chocolate Starfish powered onto the Australian music scene in the 1990s and quickly cemented themselves as an influential force. They produced two Top 10 albums and six Top 50 singles, and their inclusion on the RED HOT SUMMER TOUR again in 2019 is by popular demand.

The RED HOT SUMMER TOUR is one of the most popular touring festivals in Australia and after the sell-out run of the Suzi Quatro headlined tour in 2018, the 2019 Series Two event is certain to sell-out. These shows are what music memories are made of!
