These look like great day trips to go on! I haven’t heard of most of these but they look really nice.

' src=

The Blackbucks of Velavadar are such majestic creatures. I know this time is causing me to find what’s closed to home.

Exactly. I have postponed going to so many places near to me and prefered to go to far off places. All this is coming in handy now!

' src=

I haven’t been to Ahmedabad but it’s good know that such beautiful places are there for day trips. Thanks for sharing. Looking forward to visit Nalsarovar one day.

Thanks to these day trips, it is easy to survive in the pandemic situation.

I’ve always wanted to visit India! I’ll have to check this place out when I get there 🙂

I may be biased because it is my hometown but you should certainly come to India when possible.

What amazing day trips! I’ve never been to Gujarat, but I’m more interested to see the heritage sites of Modhera and Patan than the Statue of Unity. The polo forest also looks great!

You should certainly plan a trip to Gujarat when the situation gets better. You won’t be disappointed 🙂

Ahmedabad being the seventh largest city in India and the biggest in Gujarat is a major base of occupation, business and trade for industrial and financial growth of the state. Being unknown from the nearby city’s wealth of picnic spots and resorts, Amdavadis complaint about finding no nearby picnic spot and resort to spend the weekend with family and friends in complete peace and have fun all together. In this section of the article, we tried to cover 14 most popular and easy to access public places near Ahmedabad. The most common type are historical monuments, temple, public parks, forest area or bird sanctuaries for a best experience. Please note that, the summer is very hot in Ahmedabad and I strongly recommend checking for weather as few places are only open / recommended during monsoon or winter season.

14 most popular picnic spots near Ahmedabad.

Our list will start with one of my favorite place I have explored many times from Ahmedabad.

1. Polo Forest

Polo Forest

Polo forest is my favorite picnic place to spend quality time in nature and I strongly recommend spending one night here to reveal its natural beauty. I recommend this place to visit during monsoon season where you can also go for trekking. Popped between sanctified hills on the east and west, polo forest holds the stories from past. It sounds horrifying but there are ancient temples, several still carrying out their pujas deep inside this thick jungle. This forest itself is one big temple and the trees themselves are the gods. Polo forest is considered as one of the most popular weekend getaway near Ahmedabad where the government of Gujarat organizes Polo utsav every year.

You can easily find places to stay and food in Polo forest but you need to make prior booking, especially during weekends by considering rush. If you are planning for a day trip, you can easily conduct road trip to Polo forest where you can start early in the morning from Ahmedabad and can return by late evening. Please note that, there is no entry fees to visit Polo forest as it is open and public place.

Activities to Do:

Traveler can do trekking and photography of ancient temples and go on a forest trail at Polo forest. During polo utsav, you can also participate in cycling and enjoy the various cultural activities at Polo forest. You can hire guide from polo campsite who can help you to plan trekking activities around. Please note that, don’t go inside forest without experience guide.

Distance from Ahmadabad : 156 Km

Here is the video from my recent trip to Polo forest from Ahmedabad:

Resorts in Polo Forest:

If you really want to experience the nature, book your stay (If you are lucky to receive reply) at Polo campsite operated by forest department and the most economical place to stay in Polo forest. As explained, Polo forest is surrounded by nature and the only activity is touristy. You will find few luxury resorts in Polo forest but most of them are located bit far (1 to 5 KM) from Polo camp site and they are bit expensive too.

If you are looking for luxury stay in Polo forest, you can check Fern Sattva Resort .

Best Season:

The best season to visit Polo forest is monsoon and winter. Avoid summer as you will hardly find any water body during this season.

Kokoda Track in 'worst condition' in more than 30 years amid falling tourist numbers

A view of mountains under clouds, with bananas trees and other green vegetation in front.

Charlie Lynn led trekkers across the rugged Kokoda Track for three decades — guiding Australians as they paid tribute to soldiers who fought and died there in World War II.

But after his 101st trip last year, he decided enough was enough.

The mountainous 96-kilometre trail — a place of pilgrimage for tourists commemorating one of Australia's pivotal military victories — has fallen too far into disrepair, according to Mr Lynn.

"It's in the worst condition it's ever been in, in the 32 years that I've trekked across it," he said.

He described parts around Brown River, far inland on the track, as "death traps".

"You would hardly call it a track. It's about 10 metres above the river and if anybody has a misstep with their pack on … you will never find them again," he said.

Mr Lynn, the son of a WWII veteran, led one of the first Australian tourist groups across the famous track on the 50th anniversary of the battle in 1992.

A group of people climb a small hill in a line, under banana trees.

Since then, it's become an important source of income for villagers along the trail, bringing in 50 million kina ($20.4 million) annually to PNG's economy.

But amid a decline in visitor numbers and concerns about the management of the Kokoda Track, PNG's tourism authority is seeking oversight of the agency tasked with managing tourist operations on the trail.

Trail has become 'the wild west'

The Battle of Kokoda is among the most celebrated Australian victories of WWII, when Australian soldiers and Papua New Guinean villagers repelled the Japanese advance on Port Moresby along the mountain trail.

It forged an enduring bond between Australia and Papua New Guinea, which is now symbolised by the track — something that Prime Minister Anthony Albanese will mark as he walks part of it on Anzac Day after arriving in PNG on Monday.

You few an illustrated map of the Kokoda trail from Port Moresby in south-eastern Papua New Guinea.

At its tourism peak in 2008, about 5,600 trekkers crossed the Kokoda Track.

Since then, Mr Lynn says, numbers have dropped 46 per cent, and some believe the trail is not fulfilling its tourism potential.

Mr Lynn said the experience for tourists had suffered as management of the trail had declined.

"There's not one decent toilet across the trail for them," he said.

"What you'll have is two or three groups of 50-60 arriving at a campsite that only has capacity for 25 and they'll be having heated arguments for who stays there that night.

"It's become the wild west."

Another trekking operator, Mick O'Malley, isn't as critical and says he has seen improvements.

"We are head and shoulders above where we used to be when I first started trekking," he said.

"I agree … it would be great to have amazing toilets but, by the same token, toilets in Australia aren't run by the government. It's private enterprise.

"It's not the government's responsibility to make sure toilets and guest houses are clean and up to standard."

Researchers Kyline Koroka and Shahar Shalom Yadin, who published a paper on the Kokoda Track in the Journal of South Pacific Law, are calling for authorities and tourism operators to consult more with local communities that host the trail.

The Kokoda Track Authority (KTA), established about 20 years ago, oversees tourism operations on the trail and sits under PNG's Department of Provincial and Local-level Government Affairs (DPLGA).

However, deputy chairman of the PNG Tourism Promotion Authority, Andy Abel, said it was put in the hands of the wrong department.

"It should have been parked within the PNG Tourism Promotion Authority because Kokoda Trail trekking … is a tourism asset," he said.

"It's like parking a semitrailer in a sedan car park.

"When I realised how the tourism authority was spending millions of kina promoting the trail in Australia, but we had no control over it, I made it my business to correct it."

a black and white photograph of young men in uniform with rifles over their shoulders walking in the muddy rainforest

Mr Abel is spearheading a push to shift the management rights of the Kokoda Track Authority from the DPLGA to the PNG Tourism Promotion Authority.

He expects it to be approved within three months.

"I've met with the minister for tourism, I've met with the governor, I've met with the prime minister … so it's now just a matter of time, and not when, for that National Executive Council submission to go before cabinet and that transfer to take place."

The ABC approached the Kokoda Track Authority for comment.

KTA chief executive Julius Wargirai has previously defended the agency, saying it is working to improve transparency and grow the benefits of the track for local people.

He has also said the KTA had limited power to increase the benefits for people living on the track.

A group of trekkers arrive in a mountainous village, surrounded by trees.

In the meantime, there are plans to encourage more tourists back to PNG by funding improvements to the Kokoda Track and building more WWII attractions in Port Moresby.

Mr Abel and Port Moresby Governor Powes Parkop have signed a memorandum of understanding with Canada Bay Council in Sydney and not-for-profit organisation Network Kokoda to make the improvements.

Mr Parkop said under the plan, historic sites such as Paga Hill, Wardstrip and Sabama would undergo development for new memorials.

He said he would like memorial sites built in the Central and Oro provinces as well.

"The plan from our city is to also encourage tourism in the area of war pilgrimage," he said.

Mr Parkop said the National Capital District government (Port Moresby) would work with Network Kokoda and memorial designers to come up with ideas for installations.

One idea included placing WWII aircraft at Wards Airstrip, which was used by heavy bombers and transport planes during the conflict.

And Mr Parkop wants to extend the tourism market beyond Australia.

"There is a very big gap in the market," he said

"I think the potential for us to get more numbers here than Gallipoli is there, but the government hasn't really developed and harnessed this potential to create the facilities.

"And of course, the other market is the Japanese and USA. We want to invite them too so they can tell their story and their version of things, so they can pay respect to lost loved ones."

A Seward Highway road trip promises epic adventures

Anchorage visitors venturing beyond city limits will find a scenic escape via the Seward Highway, a spectacular route with a surprising number of roadside diversions that culminates in a storied harbor town.

This renowned 125-mile roadway runs south from Anchorage to the town of Seward. The first portion follows alongside a narrow finger of water called Turnagain Arm. This historic waterway is named for British explorer Captain James Cook, who had to “turn again” when his ship reached its dead end.

Along the journey, the highway is framed by the dramatic Chugach and Kenai Mountains. Ancient glaciers peek through lush summertime greenery. Passing small communities, rustic roadhouses and pristine alpine lakes, the highway terminates in Seward on the edge of Resurrection Bay.

The time-pressed traveler could make it to Seward and back in one long, full day, logging five-plus road hours alone. But overnighting in Seward (or elsewhere) offers a more enjoyable and leisurely experience, and allows time to appreciate the Alaska scenery and character, along with the history, recreation and dining offered along the way.

About 45 minutes south of Anchorage, Girdwood is a laid-back ski town that relocated inland a few miles from the Seward Highway after the 1964 Good Friday Earthquake.

For Alaskans and visitors alike, Girdwood is a recreation mecca, with a charming collection of memorable restaurants, art galleries, ski chalets and condos. Winter slopes and ski lifts transform to host downhill mountain biking come summer. Paved paths thread through the town, offering an opportunity to take in scenery during a stroll.

For hikers, the user-friendly Winner Creek Trail begins just behind the picturesque Hotel Alyeska. For a challenge, tackle the south end of the 21-mile Crow Pass Trail, which connects Girdwood to Eagle River’s outskirts north of Anchorage. The first few miles of the Girdwood end of the trail wind upward, with breathtaking views of glaciers, jagged mountaintops and remnants of long-gone gold mining efforts.

Girdwood’s dining options are impressively plentiful. Begin at a local icon, The Bake Shop, open as of press time Wednesday through Sunday, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. A morning-time staple for 40-plus years, The Bake Shop features homestyle favorites like sourdough pancakes and sweet rolls. For lunch, the shop switches to homemade soups and sandwiches on fresh-baked bread.

For a special dinner experience, try Jack Sprat. Its regional cuisine with an Alaska touch is truly special, highlighting seasonal fresh produce and locally sourced protein such as halibut. The tall chalet windows offer romantic views of the mountainside. Check the restaurant’s website for hours.

Nearby, stalwart Double Musky Inn is a tucked-away steakhouse known for colorful French Quarter decor, a world-class wine cellar and spot-on Creole classics with Alaska flair. Its lively elegance has delighted locals and tourists alike for decades. There will be a wait many nights, but it’s worth it.

For a fun, relaxed vibe, pop by Girdwood Brewing Co. With indoor tables and outdoor seating around gas-fed fire pits, sip pints or smaller-pour taster glasses while ordering from one or more local food trucks that rotate on site; the truck schedule is updated on the brewery’s website. They also sell trendy hoodies, trucker hats and artsy stickers to remember your sudsy Girdwood detour.

Like Girdwood, Portage once sat alongside the Seward Highway, but after the 1964 quake, Portage faded away, with little remaining today but the remains of decrepit cabins overtaken by aggressive brush. In Portage’s place, visitors today will find the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center (Mile 79 Seward Highway), a sprawling sanctuary across 200 acres that provides large-enclosure spaces for orphaned and rehabilitating Alaska animals.

View animals by either driving, walking the 1.5-mile loop encircling the center, or booking a tour with one of the staff naturalists. Hours are 9 a.m.-7 p.m. May 1 through Sept. 15. Check the website for additional hours.

An eastern turn at Portage down Portage Valley Road delivers motorists to the Begich, Boggs Visitor Center, and beyond that, the end-of-the-road town of Whittier.

As of this writing, the Begich, Boggs Visitor Center (Portage Lake Loop) is scheduled to open May 26, 2024. It sits about 5 miles east of the Seward Highway, a flat, pretty, quick drive. Named in honor of U.S. Reps. Nick Begich and Hale Boggs, whose flight in Alaska disappeared in 1972, the center is built on the edge of a lake on the moraine left by the receding Portage Glacier. The glacier is visible via boat trips to its front. The center itself offers science-geared educational opportunities for adults and kids alike.

Drive farther and travelers will encounter a truly different experience by way of the Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel. The 2.5-mile-long, one-way toll highway tunnel is a dark and moody viaduct through the formidable mountains. The longest in North America, it was originally a train tunnel connecting the western side of Turnagain Arm to the military port town of Whittier. Find tunnel schedules online to time your visit accordingly.

Whittier exists as a critical deep-water port. In this unusual community, most residents call one of two large buildings home due to the lack of housing and buildable land. For activities, there are glacier-viewing boats, hiking and fishing. The town’s single hotel, the lovely Inn at Whittier, was closed early in 2024 after flooding; reopening updates will be posted on their website. Camping and RV options exist as well.

The one-way toll tunnel is strange enough to warrant a one-hour side trip. If you have time, visit the small but surprisingly comprehensive Prince William Sound Museum. An impressive number of exhibits fills its snug space, capturing the story of Whittier’s history.

Arriving in Seward is a show-stopper. As the highway ends at last, the view opens up to this special place that’s surrounded by the dramatic mountains ringing Resurrection Bay. Seward is home to an amiable community with a hodgepodge economy built on fishing outfits, kayak companies, sightseeing excursions, shops, restaurants and bars, plus there’s a beautiful boat harbor where visitors can walk the docks. About 2,625 people live here year-round, and summer cruise ships can deliver thousands of visitors a day.

one day trip ahmedabad

Highlights of Seward include the Alaska SeaLife Center, a hands-on aquarium and working science facility that boasts opportunities to ogle diving puffins and swimming sea lions, peer at octopus up close and learn about the special place that is Resurrection Bay.

From the SeaLife Center, a leisurely walk up Fourth Avenue provides a serene sense of Seward’s long-ago frontier culture, with Old West storefronts, historical murals, steepled churches and commemorative plaques and historical markers. A paved footpath that runs from the SeaLife Center along the waterfront toward the harbor is a pleasant way to enjoy the mountain scenery.

Seward has plenty of hotels and motels, home rentals, hostel beds, camping and RV options for those overnighting it.

Beyond the roadways, day cruises through Kenai Fjords National Park are a popular way to soak up the glorious waters of Resurrection Bay. Otters, seals, puffins, orcas and various migrating whales all may make cameos on these charters, some of which include island stopovers for meals.

To see a glacier by foot, carve out a couple of hours for a stop at Exit Glacier. Located just inside Kenai Fjords National Park, this glacier at the edge of Harding Icefield recedes annually, to the sadness of many fans. But a moderately graded walking path leads to overlooks where the glacier is still visible and can be photographed.

Seward is synonymous with fishing, and there are a bounty of half- or full-day charters that fish for halibut, salmon or both. Charters typically provide all fishing gear, and in town, there are options for having fish filleted and flash-frozen for shipping after your excursion ends. These trips depart early and return late and make for a full Alaska experience. Play your cards right, and you will enjoy the scenery of a wildlife-viewing trip while returning home with a freezer’s worth of fish to commemorate your unique and unforgettable Alaska vacation long after it’s over.

This Is My Cardboard Bed

one day trip ahmedabad

If you walk into my bedroom, you might be under the impression that my husband, Chihuahua, and I sleep on a king-size Casper mattress balanced on a stack of shoeboxes. But lift up a corner of the mattress and you’ll see that they’re not shoeboxes but an interconnected cardboard honeycomb that folds out like an accordion. This is the Yona Cardboard Bed.

I didn’t set out to sleep on a cardboard bed. I had picked out my dream wood-and-rattan platform bed from CB2, which I was over the moon to find and placed an order for once it went on sale. As I waited for my dream bed to be delivered, our Casper mattress was on the floor — and sleeping on a mattress on a hardwood floor got old fast. I spilled coffee on our duvet and topper whenever I tried to step into bed. At night, I felt like our backs weren’t getting the proper support. Something had to be done.

After about a week, I furiously began Googling “temporary bed frames” and “fold-up bed frames.” And there it was: the Yona, a cardboard bed made of 99 percent recycled fibers and, according to the brand’s website, is 100 percent recyclable. “Cool, so once our CB2 bed comes, we can either fold it up or recycle it because surely it can’t last very long; it’s cardboard,” said my husband.

When it arrived, the Yona looked comically simple. Setting it up took three steps: You just open the box and pull out the Yona like an accordion, place your mattress on the accordion, and make your bed. The only thing that made it a little more difficult was that I had ordered a king — which is essentially two twin-size Yonas next to each other that I had to pull out and interlock with their notched cardboard edges. Still, it was pretty smooth sailing as soon as I pulled it out of its long rectangular box.

one day trip ahmedabad

It lifts the mattress 10.4 inches off the floor, and I haven’t spilled any coffee in bed since I got it. The honeycomb design allows for good airflow, so we haven’t seen any mold or mildew even while running a humidifier next to the bed every night for months. It hasn’t attracted any bugs, either. Every three days, the Yona will drift a little on our hardwood floors, but I just kick it back into place against the wall. We haven’t folded it back up yet, though Yona’s website says people do so frequently — it’s like a more complex Murphy bed, I suppose.

The Yona isn’t a permanent solution, but it’s so comfortable and functional that I’ve stopped hunting down alternative dream beds. It’s perfectly, surprisingly fine. And it’s a great idea for small apartments . After all, what if we move apartments when our lease is up? The Yona would be my absolute dream bed to move.

The airline's sale, which ends on Tuesday, is in celebration of Earth Day.

Spirit Airlines is celebrating Earth Day with a sale that has one-way flights starting at just $49.

The deal , which ends at 11:59 p.m. ET on April 23, is available for travel on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays from April 30 to June 19 and then again from Aug. 6 to Oct.16, Spirit shared with Travel + Leisure . The sale is not available during several blackout dates, including May 28, May 29, Sept. 3, and Sept. 4.

“The opportunity to travel and explore nature is impactful and helps us better appreciate our planet,” Lania Rittenhouse, the vice president of guest experience, brand and communications at Spirit Airlines, said in a statement shared with T+L. "We hope this offer makes it easier for our Guests to discover a new national park or beach this summer with family and friends.”

Fly between Atlantic City and West Palm Beach, between Atlanta and Baltimore, between Nashville and Boston, between Charlotte and Dallas, between Newark and Pittsburgh, and more starting at just $49 each way. On the West Coast, travelers can fly between Los Angeles and San Antonio, Salt Lake City, Las Vegas, and more also starting at just $49, or splurge and fly from the City of Angels to New Orleans starting at just $77 one-way.

Travelers can also fly cross-country for less with travel between Miami and Chicago starting at just $69 each way and travel between Philadelphia and Los Angeles starting at just $81 each way.

The sale comes as Spirit Airlines plans to launch new routes to popular destinations like Boston, Portland, Ore., and Salt Lake City in time for summer.

The ultra-low cost airline offers bare-bones tickets and charges for extras like baggage and seat selection. However, travelers who belong to the airline’s paid yearly membership program, the Saver$ Club, receive discounts on those extras.

Travelers who miss the sale can still save big by booking their tickets in person at the airport . That’s because Spirit waives its passenger usage fee for customers who book in person, which generally saves travelers around $23 per ticket each way.

How to explore amsterdam like a local.

Tiptoe through the tulips during Amsterdam's aromatic spring season.

According to the city’s statistics bureau, more than 18 million people visited Amsterdam last year, making it one of the world’s most popular vacation destinations.

It’s easy to see why so many people are lured to the Dutch capital: world heritage canals, vintage architecture, outstanding museums, chromatic tulips, what seems like a thousand different types of cheese, and effortless transportation links to the rest of western Europe.

With iconic attractions like the Van Gogh Museum, Anne Frank House, and canal boat tours chockablock with tourists during the summer season, how do Amsterdammers spend their free time?

Here are four awesome ways to explore the city like a local:

Rent your own canal boat and picnic on the water.

Day One: Rent Your Own Canal Boat

Forget the guided, narrated canal boat tours. Rent your own boat at maritime outfitters like Sloepdelen and explore the city’s waterways at your own pace.

Their little all-electric sloops are super quiet and easy to drive via a joystick and rudder. Unlike renting cars, no boating license is required and the vessels can fit as many as 12 people.

You book the boats online, choosing between Sloepdelen’s two floating docks, both of them perched on the sinuous Singelgracht canal on the east and west sides of the city’s historic center. Arriving at the dock, you activate the sloop with your smartphone, get a brief orientation on how to navigate the craft, and you’re off.

Billionaire Mark Cuban Issues Post Halving Bitcoin Warning Amid Unprecedented Crypto Fee Price Chaos

The boats can be rented in increments of two, three and four hours (at a cost of 70 Euros per hour). Each boat comes with a handy map showing popular routes, one-way canals, restricted areas, and public restrooms.

And don’t forget food and beverage for a floating picnic. Try the tasty Asian fusion sandwiches at Margo’s Amsterdam or the bánh mì baguettes, gỏi cuốn spring rolls, and other Vietnamese street foods at Viȇt View .

The new Straat Museum showcases works by more than 150 of the world's leading street and graffiti ... [+] artists.

Day Two: Hop Across the Harbor to Noord

Amsterdam’s busy harbor is called the Ij (pronounced like “eye”). Across the water from the historic center is the Noord district, a former factory and shipbuilding area that’s gradually transitioned over the past few decades into a cutting-edge, post-industrial wonderland.

Getting there is part of the fun. The GVB Ferries that crisscross the harbor are totally free to pedestrians and cyclists. And the more popular lines run every 15 or 20 minutes between 7 a.m. and midnight.

Start your ferry hopping day on the No. 7 ferry from Pontsteiger to the NDSM Wharf. Grab a pastry and coffee at Carroll’s Café before ducking into the new Straat Museum . Opened in 2020 and housed inside a former shipbuilding warehouse, the museum flaunts massive works of graffiti and street art from around the world.

If you’re not in a hurry, sink into a long and casual lunch at Pllek , a waterfront eatery built with old metal shipping containers (try the avocado toast or the wild boar sausage).

After lunch, ride the No. 5 ferry from NDSM to Amsterdam Central Station, and then No. 3 ferry to Buiksloterweg. From the wharf, it’s a five-minute walk to the Eye Filmmuseum , which is both a masterpiece of modern architecture, exhibits on various aspects of the moving image, and a place to catch daily screenings of classic movies.

If you have any energy left, make your way to the observation deck atop the nearby A’DAM Tower for a panoramic view of the harbor and city, and a chance to ride in an “Over the Edge” swing that flies 300 feet above the waterfront.

Wild boar bratwurst and beer at Pllek Restaurant on the waterfront.

Day Three: Lions and Tigers and Brews

Surrounded by four wide canals, Plantage is literally an island unto itself on Amsterdam’s east side. More than a thousand people live in the insular neighborhood, but most of the land is taken up by attractions popular with Amsterdammers for more than a hundred years.

Founded in 1838, Natura Artis Magistra (“Nature Teaches Art”) is the world’s fifth oldest zoo. Better known as Artis, the menagerie boasts more than 900 species as well as a planetarium, aquarium, and the interactive, cutting-edge Micropia museum of microscopic life.

Among the island’s other residents is the Hortus Botanicus . Founded in 1638 as a place where apothecaries could study the strange plants discovered in the tropics by the Dutch East India Company, the botanical garden blends vintage and modern futuristic greenhouses.

Plantage also harbors the Verzetsmuseum Amsterdam , which details the Dutch resistance against the occupying Nazis during World War Two, as well as the H’Art Museum , which partners with the Smithsonian, British Museum and Pompidou Center to stage unique art, design and biographical exhibits.

Slake your thirst on a locally brewed Amstel lager or Brouwerij 't IJ IPA at the Cafe Eik en Linde , a cute little pub with a pool table, board games, friendly café cat and typical Dutch snacks like “old” Gouda cheese, liverwurst, and appelschnitt pie.

How many windmills can you count in the Dutch countryside around Amsterdam?

Day Four: Escape Into the Countryside

Amsterdam is often called the “City of Bikes” for good reason. Around 80% of residents own a cycle and roughly two-thirds ride them every day. More than 320 miles (515 km) of dedicated bike paths convey cycles through the city.

But when Amsterdammers crave a quick getaway, they often hire a vehicle for a day or even a couple of hours and strike off in various directions into the Dutch countryside.

“Car sharing” agencies like Greenwheels and Free2Move make it easy to rent by downloading their app onto your smartphone, creating an account, and locating a vehicle near your location on an interactive map of Amsterdam. The app also opens the car when you reach its charging station or street location.

Double-parked delivery trucks, road or canal construction, and swarms of bikes make driving out of the central city more than a little challenging. But once you’re in the countryside, the roads are good and often uncrowded.

Where should you go?

Head west to Haarlam (with its imposing cathedral and interesting lunch options) and the North Sea coast. If it’s spring, book tickets and parking pass at Keukenhof Gardens to view the tulips and other flowers. In summer, hit the long, sandy beach at Zandvoort or hike coastal Zuid-Kennemerland National Park . Total distance: around 66 miles (106 km).

Or you can drive east from the city on an adventure that features the amazing Kröller-Müller sculpture garden (one of the world’s largest collections of outdoor art) and De Hoge Veluwe National Park for hiking or biking (both electric and muscle-powered bikes are available at three outlets in the park). Extend the day by visiting the World War Two museums and memorials in nearby Arnhem . Total distance: circa 130 miles (207 km).

The Amsterdam trio: Bikes, boats and blooms.

UC pioneers green innovation with award-winning sustainability initiatives

On earth day, every day, uc leads campus-wide efforts toward environmental excellence.

headshot of Melanie Schefft

In the heart of April, as Earth Day blooms, the University of Cincinnati's Sustainability and Utilities Departments took center stage, orchestrating a symphony of eco-conscious activities to boost campus consciousness towards greener living.

From vibrant campus Spring Fling festivities to enlightening tours of UC's acclaimed Central Utilities Plant  and Civic Garden , the university community was treated to a variety of events aimed at fostering sustainable behaviors.

A highlight was the Net Impact program's inventive blend of fitness and nutrition, where student entrepreneurs pedaled their way to smoothie bliss on stationary bikes inside UC’s Lindner College of Business lobby.

Furthering its green agenda, UC features a Bike Kitchen in Daniels Hall, empowering students with the skills to maintain their bicycles, while also offering free bike rentals through the Bike Share program for anyone with a Bearcat Card, helping to facilitate sustainable transportation across campus and beyond.

Culminating the week-long celebration was the thrilling Bike Kitchen’s Bike Show contest on Bearcats Commons, where participants flaunted their two-wheeled masterpieces, Whipped up smoothies while peddling a stationary bike and showed off their cycling prowess in a slow-peddling agility contest.

Saving the environment one can, bottle at a time

Sustainability coordinator, Alexandra Roman-Gonzalez, emphasizes the multifaceted benefits of such initiatives, also underlining UC's holistic approach to environmental stewardship. “We have recycling efforts all across campus,” adds Roman-Gonzalez. “With teams of volunteers, we come in near the end of football and basketball games to collect the recyclable cans and bottles. We successfully recycle these items while also helping to minimize the amount of landfill waste, as well as the work of stadium cleaning crews.”

As the calendar flips to May, UC's commitment to sustainability only intensifies. Professor Brian Grub of UC's College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning will spearhead the creation of a new rain garden brimming with native flora — a project aimed not only at managing stormwater runoff but also at nurturing vital pollinator habitats. In addition, the organic produce from the adjacent Sustainability Garden will find its way to UC's  Bearcat Pantry , addressing food insecurity among students.

As part of the earlier  Climate Action Plan  enacted in 2019, UC Sustainability, along with UC Utilities held a campus-wide forum earlier this year for the entire UC community to weigh in on ways to improve the plan. Participants presented plans for actions and goals which were weaved into the new plan slated to begin this June.

UC Utilities celebrates 20 years of cogeneration

Meanwhile, the crown jewel of UC's environmental efforts lies within its Utilities Department, where a relentless pursuit of energy efficiency and renewable power sources has propelled the institution to the forefront of sustainability.

Celebrating the 20th anniversary of its West Campus cogeneration plant, UC Utilities Director Mike Hofmann heralds the plant as a pivotal force in slashing greenhouse gas emissions, marking a monumental shift toward cleaner energy production. Honoring the two-decade old initiative and its retirees, Utilities will hold a luncheon on May 29th in the cogeneration plant parking lot on Jefferson Avenue, open to anyone on campus who wants to help celebrate the occasion.

Under Hofmann's leadership, UC Utilities has undertaken a series of transformative initiatives, including the adoption of 100% wind power for suburban campuses, innovative wastewater recycling for use in campus heating and cooling systems and the installation of cutting-edge chillers for enhanced energy efficiency.

Future endeavors

Looking ahead, UC's updated Climate Action Plan promises a roadmap for even greater strides in energy conservation, with a focus on expanding renewable energy sources and embracing emerging technologies like hydrogen fuel.

Embracing the campus-wide ethos of collaboration, UC Utilities aims to empower individuals to enact positive change through real-time energy monitoring and smart building controls.

These smart monitors, adorning the walls in all lobbies, tell occupants in real-time what energy is being used. In addition to providing Utilities the opportunity to monitor current usage, this system will give everyone inside buildings the ability to positively impact their environment by reducing their own water and energy use.

As Hofmann aptly summarizes, "The strength of our campus is our people." With a community united in their dedication to environmental sustainability, UC stands poised to lead the charge toward a greener, more sustainable future.

In the face of mounting environmental challenges, UC stands as a shining example of proactive stewardship, proving that with determination and innovation, a brighter, greener tomorrow is more than a goal — it's a way of life.
