Ahmedabad being the seventh largest city in India and the biggest in Gujarat is a major base of occupation, business and trade for industrial and financial growth of the state. Being unknown from the nearby city’s wealth of picnic spots, Amdavadis complaint about finding no nearby picnic spot to spend the weekend with family and friends in complete peace and have fun all together. If you are in Pune or Mumbai, you can easily find plenty of weekend getaway but when it comes to Ahmedabad, you will have limited options to explore.

Same as applies to people who are staying in Gandhinagar as it is also located at just 20KM from Ahmedabad.

List of Picnic Places Near Ahmedabad:

If you are looking for public places you can visit for a day trip, there are limited options available. In this section of the article, we tried to cover 14 most popular and easy to access public places near Ahmedabad. The most common type are historical monuments, temple, public parks, forest area or bird sanctuaries for a best experience.

Please note that, the summer is very hot in Ahmedabad and I strongly recommend checking for weather as few places are only open / recommended during monsoon or winter season. Our list will start with one of my favorite places I have explored many times from Ahmedabad.

1. Polo Forest :

Polo Forest

Polo forest is my favorite picnic place to spend quality time in nature and I strongly recommend spending one night here to reveal its natural beauty. I recommend this place to visit during monsoon season where you can also go for trekking. Popped between sanctified hills on the east and west, polo forest holds the stories from past. It sounds horrifying but there are ancient temples, several still carrying out their pujas deep inside this thick jungle. This forest itself is one big temple and the trees themselves are the gods. Polo forest is considered as one of the most popular weekend getaway near Ahmedabad where the government of Gujarat organizes Polo utsav every year.

You can easily find places to stay and food in Polo forest but you need to make prior booking, especially during weekends by considering rush. If you are planning for a day trip, you can easily conduct road trip to Polo forest where you can start early in the morning from Ahmedabad and can return by late evening. Please note that, there is no entry fees to visit Polo forest as it is open and public place.

Activities to Do:

Traveler can do trekking and photography of ancient temples and go on a forest trail at Polo forest. During polo utsav, you can also participate in cycling and enjoy the various cultural activities at Polo forest. You can hire guide from polo campsite who can help you to plan trekking activities around. Please note that, don’t go inside forest without experience guide.

Distance from Ahmadabad: 156 Km

Here is the video from my recent trip to Polo forest from Ahmedabad:

Resorts in Polo Forest:

If you really want to experience the nature, book your stay (If you are lucky to receive reply) at Polo campsite operated by forest department and the most economical place to stay in Polo forest. As explained, Polo forest is surrounded by nature and the only activity is touristy. You will find few luxury resorts in Polo forest but most of them are located bit far (1 to 5 KM) from Polo camp site and they are bit expensive too.

If you are looking for luxury stay in Polo forest, you can check Fern Sattva Resort .

Best Season:

The best season to visit Polo forest is monsoon and winter. Avoid summer as you will hardly find any water body during this season.

2. Adalaj Stepwell :

Adalaj Stepwell

Set in the noiseless village of Adalaj, Adalaj Stepwell aka Adalaj ni vav has worked as a relaxing place for hundreds of years for numerous travellers and convoys during their trade ways.   There is an opening in the ceilings which permits the light and air to come in the octagonal well. Though, straight sunshine does not touch the flight of steps or quays excluding a short-term in noon. Therefore it is believed that the atmosphere inside the well is 6⁰ cooler than the outside. Another extraordinary feature of this step-well is that out of the several stepwells in Gujarat, it is the only one with three entering steps.

Clicking pictures of walls engraved for embellishment, with epic scenes with everyday extracts of women whipping buttermilk, dancers amidst musicians, women prettifying themselves and a king sitting on a stool. There is a garden outside the step-well where you can seat and relax with the friends and family.

What amazing day trips! I’ve never been to Gujarat, but I’m more interested to see the heritage sites of Modhera and Patan than the Statue of Unity. The polo forest also looks great!

Most Airlines Except One Are Recovering From the CrowdStrike Tech Outage. the Feds Have Noticed

Delta Air Lines is struggling for a fourth straight day to recover from the tech outage, even as other airlines are returning to nearly normal levels of service

Delta Air Lines struggled for a fourth straight day to recover from a worldwide technology outage caused by a faulty software update , stranding tens of thousands of passengers and drawing unwanted attention from the federal government.

The airline's chief executive said it would take “another couple days” before “the worst is clearly behind us.” Delta's chief information officer said Monday that the airline was still trying to fix a vital crew-scheduling program.

Other carriers were returning to nearly normal levels of service disruptions, intensifying the glare on Delta’s relatively weaker response to the outage that hit airlines, hospitals and businesses around the world.

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg spoke to Delta CEO Ed Bastian on Sunday about the airline’s high number of cancellations since Friday. Buttigieg said his agency had received “hundreds of complaints” about Delta, and he expects the airline to provide hotels and meals for travelers who are delayed and to issue quick refunds to customers who don’t want to be rebooked on a later flight.

“No one should be stranded at an airport overnight or stuck on hold for hours waiting to talk to a customer service agent,” Buttigieg said. He vowed to help Delta passengers by enforcing air-travel consumer-protection rules .

Bastian said in a video for employees that he told Buttigieg, “You do not need to remind me. I know, because we do our very best, particularly in tough times, taking care of our customers."

Delta has canceled more than 5,500 flights since the outage started early Friday morning, including at least 700 flights canceled on Monday, according to aviation-data provider Cirium. Delta and its regional affiliates accounted for about two-thirds of all cancellations worldwide Monday, including nearly all the ones in the United States.

United Airlines was the next-worst performer since the onset of the outage, canceling nearly 1,500 flights. United canceled only 17 Monday flights by late morning, however.

Other airlines that were caught up in the first round of groundings also returned mostly to normal operations by Monday. That included American Airlines, Spirit Airlines, Frontier Airlines and Allegiant Air.

Bastian, the Delta CEO, said in a message to customers Sunday that the airline was continuing to restore operations that were disrupted. One of the tools Delta uses to track crews was affected and could not process the high number of changes triggered by the outage.

“The technology issue occurred on the busiest travel weekend of the summer, with our booked loads exceeding 90%, limiting our re-accommodation capabilities,” Bastian wrote. Loads are the percentage of sold seats on each flight.

Airlines have large, layered technology systems, and crew-tracking programs are often among the oldest systems. When the outage began Friday, it also affected systems used to check in passengers and make pre-flight calculations about aircraft weight and balance, airlines reported. United and American reported intermittent problems communicating with crews in the air, contributing to their decisions to briefly ground all flights .

Some airlines, including Southwest and Alaska, do not use CrowdStrike, the provider of cybersecurity software whose faulty upgrade to Microsoft Windows triggered the outages. Those carriers saw relatively few cancellations.

Delta, however, said that “upward of half” its IT systems are Windows-based. The airline said the outage forced IT employees to manually repair and reboot each affected system and synchronize applications so they start working together.

“It is going to take another couple of days before we are in a position to say that ... the worst is clearly behind us," Bastian told employees Monday. “Today will be a better day than yesterday, and hopefully Tuesday and Wednesday will be that much better again.”

On the same video, Delta Chief Information Officer Rahul Samant said two applications were particularly difficult to restart on Friday: One that manages traffic at Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport, Delta's biggest hub, and another that assigns pilots and flight attendants to flights.

Technicians had gotten the crew-scheduling program running, “but we have a catch-up to do,” and new issues keep arising, Samant said.

Atlanta-based Delta said it is offering waivers to make it easier for customers to reschedule trips.

That was of little help to Jason Helmes, a fitness coach who was trying to get home to Detroit from Denver. His flight on Sunday was delayed three times before it was canceled; by the time the plane finally pushed back from the gate, the pilots were at the end of their legally allowed shift.

“Everyone was just stranded. No information on hotels. No information on what to do next,” Helmes said. “They said, ‘Go down to the luggage carousel, your luggage should be there.’ There were thousands of bags down there. I found my luggage — I got lucky.”

Helmes said Delta offered to rebook him on Wednesday, but he worried that flight would also be canceled. He booked a Tuesday flight home on Frontier Airlines — one of the carriers that has largely recovered. He is saving his receipts, including a hotel room, in hopes that Delta will reimburse him.

“For the last 10 years, I've been exclusively on Delta,” he said. “This has me double-thinking about that.”

Delta's meltdown is reminiscent of the December 2022 debacle that caused Southwest Airlines to cancel nearly 17,000 flights over a 15-day stretch. After a federal investigation of Southwest's compliance with consumer-protection rules, the airline agreed to pay a $35 million fine as part of a $140 million settlement with the Transportation Department.

Southwest’s breakdown started during a winter storm, but the airline’s recovery took unusually long because of problems with a crew-scheduling system -- a striking similarity to Delta’s current mess.

The airline industry might be the most visible victim of the worldwide tech problems caused by the faulty software update from Texas-based cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike. Microsoft said the glitch affected 8.5 million machines. CrowdStrike says it has deployed a fix, but experts say it could take days or even weeks to repair every affected computer .

The Democratic presidential nomination isn't set yet. Could Hillary Clinton replace Biden?

After President Joe Biden announced that he is bowing out of the presidential race and endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris yesterday, other big names in the party are swirling around for his replacement.

Biden’s announcement comes nearly a month after his rough debate performance , which led to a wave of Democratic officials, party members, and donors calling for his resignation from the race. Even though Biden threw his support behind his vice president, it’s still just an endorsement, not an official nomination.

More: Harris pays tribute to Biden in first public remarks since launching campaign: Live updates

If Harris receives the party’s nomination in August, she will make history again after becoming the first Black and Asian-American woman to serve as U.S. vice president.

As the new Democratic frontrunner, Harris’ potential candidacy brings to mind former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s race against former President Donald Trump in 2016 as the first female nominee of both major parties. Clinton won the popular vote by nearly 3 million ballots, but lost the Electoral College to Trump.

Though her name is not among those being floated for Biden’s replacement, could Clinton replace the president on the Democratic ticket?

Could Hillary Clinton receive the Democratic nomination?

While it’s possible for Clinton to replace Biden on the Democratic ticket, it is improbable. Shortly after Harris announced her candidacy on Sunday, the former U.S. Secretary of State and her husband, former President Bill Clinton , endorsed her in a statement posted on X, formerly Twitter.

“We are honored to join the President in endorsing Vice President Harris and will do whatever we can to support her,” they wrote in the statement. “Now is the time to support Kamala Harris and fight with everything we’ve got to elect her.”

In August, 3,896 delegates will gather at the  Democratic National Convention  in Chicago to back who they choose, even if Biden won in their states’ primaries this year. According to DNC rules, “delegates elected to the national convention pledged to a presidential candidate shall in all good conscience reflect the sentiments of those who elected them.”

This good conscious rule means delegates are encouraged to vote for the winner of the state primary, but can vote for someone else. However, multiple state parties, including South Carolina, have pledged their delegates to Harris at the DNC her candidacy announcement Sunday.

Other names being floated as Biden’s replacement include California Gov. Gavin Newsom, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker.
