Marianas Trench – Suspending Gravity Tour The Unlikely Candidates, DJ George Thoms

Marianas Trench

Increasingly people are saying the album, as a format, is dead. With  Phantoms Marianas Trench prove – once again and unequivocally – that the reports of its death are greatly exaggerated.

“I think we’re going to see more artists releasing singles and not really doing albums anymore,” says Marianas Trench’s Josh Ramsay, “but that doesn’t really inspire me.”

What inspires Ramsay is creating a self-contained universe for the band’s songs to exist in. On their fifth album,  Phantoms (604 Records), it’s a space possessed by the spirit of a lingering, unforgettable loss. “I was basically thinking about someone falling into madness while living in a house haunted by the ghost of a former love. As dark as that sounds, for me that also means a rebirth,” Ramsay says. “And that comes from a healthy place.”

“The vibe was really healthy and happy, and the setting opened up a lot of options for what we could get away with creatively,” puts in bassist, Mike Ayley. Not that Marianas Trench has ever shied away extending their creative reach substantially with each new album. From the release of their debut,  Fix Me (2006), to 2015’s  Astoria , the Vancouver-based four-piece have consistently raised the bar for themselves with ever more ambitious records.

Astoria ’s framework was a coming of age story inspired by the sci-fi adventure, The Goonies.  Phantoms  mines a different vein of life experience entirely, one buried in the wreckage of the certainty that the one, incomparable love you’re due in life is lost forever.

The band drills down into the consequences of that loss deeply on lead single ‘I Knew You When’ – a track fuelled by deep bass and relentless beats that showcases Ramsay’s staggering vocal range and the band’s ample musical chops in equal measure. “A lot of love songs look at the pretty things, the easy things,” Ramsay says. “’I Knew You When’ is about having a long history with someone, accepting the faults in each other, acknowledging it’s going to get messy here and there, and still being up for it.”

“I was looking for inspiration in a lot of arenas,” he continues. I read a ton of Edgar Allan Poe and was also inspired by the Netflix series, The Haunting of Hill House, and the idea that ghosts mean different things to different people, and can also represent hope .”

Some songs came straight from titles, Ramsay says, ‘The Death of Me’ for example – an old saying Ramsay uses to examine the consequences the kind of loss that underpins the record can have on new relationships: “When somebody thinks, ‘This is real’ and the other person wishes it was but just can’t feel that, the only decent thing to do is bow out.”

“Once we had the idea everything was set in a haunted house, that immediately suggested a sonic landscape, a rulebook. ” Imposing parameters, he adds, was inspiring rather than limiting: “ I wanted the songs to feel like modern pop, but sound very organic, with real instrumentation. So,  i f it sounded creepy, I’d use it,” he says, pointing to the  hauntingly manic, ‘Echoes Of You’, featuring Jellyfish lead singer, Roger Joseph Manning Jr. “That starts out with a solo harpsichord. But I never would have made that choice without that setting. ”

From harpsichord to Theremin to custom guitar sounds specifically created to mimic keyboards using old school techniques, “tricks” and effects:  “Almost every sound was very deliberately, patiently and consciously chosen,” Ayley puts in.

But the opportunities each new framework, or universe, provide extend well beyond the sonic landscape. On every record, Marianas Trench set out to challenge themselves to a greater degree, individually and collectively. “Each time we do an album, I try and write something that’s out of my vocal reach at the time. Then we tour for two years and it forces me to get better,” Ramsay says, adding that bassist Ayley, guitarist Matt Webb and drummer Ian Casselman, his “three favourite collaborators,” are equally dedicated to pushing their limits vocally and instrumentally.

As they have on past records, Marianas Trench draw on well-established strengths – their trademark, heavily layered harmonies, as well as blazing guitars set against club-worthy beats – but Phantoms also finds them pushing the boundaries, musically and lyrically, in a way that’s difficult to define. “Even for us it’s hard to pin down,” Ayley says. “There are signature Marianas Trench moments, but the feel is definitely different.”

Ramsay and the band, like so many of the artists that influence them, are defined, in part, by their total lack of predictability, constant reinvention and reevaluation. “To stay inspired I need to be doing something new,” Ramsay explains, “which is why I always have a setting with a new set of rules and, also, a new set of inspirations. Each of our albums is sort of a scrapbook of my life at the time. The goal is always to write a set of songs that complement each other. Not just to go chasing hits.”

Granted, multiple tracks on  Phantoms  could easily stand alone as singles; from urgent beat-driven tunes like ‘Only the Lonely Survive’ and ‘Don’t Miss Me?’ to borderline power ballad ‘Glimmer’. And every track on  Phantoms telegraphs the sense of abandonment and loss that focused Ramsay’s songwriting from the outset. But listening to  Phantoms ,   as a whole, is the best way for listeners to find the room that best suits them individually, among the many in the house the band has built.

“It’s a journey,” Ramsay adds, one that finds Marianas Trench guiding listeners through a extremely personal space, while still allowing them room to wander on their own and  connect with the songs on their own level, with their own stories.

From Phantoms jaw-dropping opener, ‘Eleonora’ – a heavily layered a cappella salute to Edgar Allan Poe’s 1842 short story of the same name – to the unapologetically epic closer, ‘The Killing Kind’, with it’s deep orchestration, ripping guitars and vocal gymnastics,  Phantoms sheer emotional weight and brutal honesty will leave a lasting mark on listeners.

“It’s about messy, real-life love with consequences; the kind of relationship that takes years to build,” Ramsay sums up. And for him, it’s personal. “Fun fact: every love song I’ve ever written is about the same girl.” Although Phantoms draws inspiration from a decidedly personal place, however: “ It’s not like you’re just listening in on someone else’s life. Everybody has that experience. That’s just living. And Phantoms, I think, will allow people to connect on their own level, with their own story, to the ones that we’re sharing.”

Marianas Trench announce ‘Suspending Gravity’ tour + new album

Marianas Trench have announced that they will be heading back out on a U.S. headlining tour in 2019, dubbed the Suspending Gravity tour.

The 22-date tour will be held at venues that will give the fans more of an up-close-and personal live experience, and feature the powerhouse Vancouver quartet’s signature high-energy performance, while showcasing material from their forthcoming studio album Phantoms,  as well as tracks from previous Marianas Trench albums.

“ After months of hibernating in the studio, it’s time to get back on stage in front of our fans and share some new music with the world. We couldn’t be more excited. Time to dust off the shiny pants and stretch out the glutes, the Trench is back,” explains Marianas Trench lead guitarist Matt Webb.

No further details regarding their new album, Phantoms (their first since 2015’s Astoria ), is known now — outside of the previously released “I Knew You When,” which you can find below. “This is about long term, messy, real life love. Love with consequence. Not about drunken lust, or doing shots in a bar, or ‘living life for just tonight,’ but the kind of real-life relationship that takes a decade to build, through ups and downs,” explains Marianas Trench vocalist Josh Ramsay. “If I’ve learned one thing in my life as a performer it’s this; if you’re going to sing a song every night for the rest of your career, you better mean it – and I do.”

The tour will find Marianas Trench kicking off on May 1st in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and wrapping up on June 5th in Anaheim, California. Pre-sale VIP tickets are on sale now until Thursday, December 6th at 10pm local time. General admission tickets will then go on sale on Friday, December 7th at 10am local time. More information on tickets can be found here .

Review - Marianas Trench , Suspending Gravity Tour-Sheffield

Canadian pop-punk band Marianas trench consisting of Josh Ramsay, Matt Webb, Ian Casselman, and Mike Ayley blew the crowd away at there Sheffield gig as part of the UK/Europe leg of the Suspending Gravity tour in support of there fifth studio album Phantoms.

Supporting was DJ George Thoms who took to the stage playing a mix of crowd favourites that helped fire up the already excited crowd that was forming. Next was Vancouver based Dirty radio with fun upbeat songs the crowd couldn’t resist dancing to and the duos impressive stage presence commanding the crowd as if they were the headliner they were a hit with the crowd and us and we hope to see more of them soon.

Marianas trench took to the stage with roaring cheers from the audience. Starting with the haunting Eleonora the four-piece set the tone for the rest of the evening with mind-blowing harmonies showcasing the bands’ talent.

The setlist builds a perfect mix of old fan favourites and songs from phantoms that had the loyal crowd hooked from start to finish and wanting more.

Old hits such as All to myself and celebrity status had the crowd singing every word at the top of there lungs and bouncing along. Which the band themselves mentioned was crazy due to the little promotion they’ve had over In the UK as the crowd how they had found out about them.

The band effortlessly changed from fast full of energy songs to slower emotion fuelled tracks that had the crowds silently hang on to each word you could tell just how much the music and the band meant to many people in the room.

Ramsay’s vocals and stage presence is always electrifying and of top quality and this show was no different from his energetic performance interacting with and bouncing off the crowd’s energy to more theatrical moments mixed with his incredible vocal talent and range the show was faultless from start to end.

As they ended the show with the album closer for Phantoms The Killing Kind which provided one last chance to show off their incredible harmony arrangements and left the stage the crowd was loud with cheers and chants of one more song it’s obvious there is so much potential for the bands growth in the UK and here at Celebmix we hope to see this soon.

It’s not too late to check out Marianas trench on the UK/European leg of the suspending gravity tour for more information click here .

Atwood Magazine - For the Love of Music

Building New Worlds: Marianas Trench on Their Immersive 5th Album ‘Phantoms’

Marianas Trench © Karolina Turek

Marianas Trench explore the dark side of love in their fifth album ‘Phantoms’, an intensely crafted start-to-finish listening experience with enough tumult and complexity to overwhelm the senses in the best way possible.

A day off from tour left Marianas Trench stranded in New Orleans. It was a morbid experience of soaking up the strange energy emanating throughout the state. The presence of voodoo permeated the air, having been brought there in the early 1770s and commemorated ever since. The atmosphere of death and black magic evoked inspiration from the members of the Canadian pop/rock band and infused in them a fascination for the idea of love and death combined. The product is their fifth studio album Phantoms , released March 1 via 604 Records.

Phantoms - Marianas Trench

“It’s like death, but it’s also a celebration of life,” says bassist and vocalist Mike Ayley. “It has this creepy feel, but it’s actually hopeful and inspiring.”

Phantoms  revolves around the loss of a lover and the ways in which memories can embody their ghost.

This haunting can transpire through different mediums — “Missing the person or hoping they’re still there… lingering in your mind and not being able to shake off the past,” says Ayley, only giving a couple of examples off of a long list of perspectives and scenarios. For about a year, Marianas Trench took a multitude of steps to conceive this theme and develop it to the point of creating a dimension for their music to float in and their fans to temporarily reside in. At the heart of this world is Edgar Allan Poe, whose horror is not the typical supernatural gimmick, but a “[dark] languid sort of sanity and realm and reality,” described by Ayley.

Horror is much more effective in the context of real life — it is more tangible, more believable, and much closer to home.

It can even come across as relatable at some points, like in “Your Ghost,” which flows perfectly with the theme of the album, but can also fit into mundane life through other interpretations. “ It’s like every time you vanish somehow you’re still here, you never seem to manage just to disappear ,” sings lead vocalist Josh Ramsay. For the band, the song is actually about a lover lost to death, but it also could sound like a past lover lost through a simple breakup. People can feel like ghosts, and complicated romance can feel supernatural:  Phantoms is able to vivify these tragic sensations that often feel as harsh and heartbreaking as death.

Because Marianas Trench were confining themselves to this specific theme, it narrowed down certain possibilities, but aided them in inspiration and even opened up unlikely opportunities. “Creatively, we had given ourselves permission to do different things with the genre we had chosen for the album,” says Ayley, who points out that Phantoms  includes a harpsichord — an instrument they’ve never used before — and a capella — a type of singing the band have been doing since their beginning, but had never utilized in this way before the album. “When you have a theme, it gives you some direction,” he says, and not only in terms of music, but also with visuals, concerts, and lyricism. Their upcoming Suspending Gravity tour will have a haunted house ambiance reverberating through it, a kind of enhanced experience for the album in which it becomes literally all-encompassing.

Marianas Trench © Karolina Turek

We had given ourselves permission to do different things with the genre we had chosen for the album.

Phantoms commences with the one minute introduction “Eleonora,” the start of the accumulation of anticipation and intensity. “The whole album is designed to have a slow-building tension to this long climax,” says Ayley. The final track, “The Killing Kind,” approaches seven minutes, and carries enough chaos as a stand-alone song. “[‘The Killing Kind’] within itself does that — starts small and gets bigger and bigger until there’s this ultimate pay-off, so it’s a pay-off within the song and within the album.”

The journey is dual — existing within the album as a whole, but also within each track. With every song, we are traversing the terrain of a few minutes or so, but also advancing in the overall terrain of the entire forty minute experience. Phantoms comes together as an intensely crafted world, its physical and emotional aspects piecing together a full puzzle, holding enough tumult and complexity to overwhelm in a way that feels completely real.

After the year-long process of building Phantoms , the band is more than satisfied with the result. They experience a variety of sensations when immersing themselves in it, including goosebumps for Ayley throughout the album, and especially near the closing. “I think it might be our best album actually,” says Ayley, its strong points being the start-to-finish listening experience and the musical growth in their overall discography.

You can either take his word for it, or you can enter the world of Phantoms and decide from there.

Review – Marianas Trench , Suspending Gravity Tour-Sheffield

Charlotte Freeman-Coates

Canadian pop-punk band Marianas trench consisting of Josh Ramsay, Matt Webb, Ian Casselman, and Mike Ayley blew the crowd away at there Sheffield gig as part of the UK/Europe leg of the Suspending Gravity tour in support of there fifth studio album Phantoms.

marianas trench suspending gravity tour

Check out my full review in Pittsburgh Music Magaz ine here !

Marianas Trench released their fifth full-length album, Phantoms , this past March. To celebrate its release and success, they planned the Suspending Gravity Tour with stops around the U.S. and Canada, with a European leg later on. This would be the third time I’ve seen Marianas Trench, and my excitement for the show never wavered. I last saw them on their Hey You Guys!! Tour in 2016, and their SPF 80’s Tour , also in 2016 (bizarre, I know but I wasn’t about to question it). I shot one of the two and it was so surreal. Needless to say, I was very excited to see what kinds of photos I’d be able to get this time around.

On their Suspending Gravity Tour, they brought along Toronto DJ and producer, DJ George Thoms . Thoms really brought the energy and was a great hype man to start off the show. He played a good mix of current and classic tunes that just about everyone could dance to.

They also brought along Indie/Pop band, New Dialogue , from Los Angeles, CA. They were very hip and current, I’d like to say. The woman-fronted band clearly had some fans in the audience because the crowd went nuts when they came on. I heard many voices behind me singing the lyrics to every song. Ela Kitapci, lead vocalist, has this Hayley Williams vibe to her and it’s very intriguing. Maybe it was her pink hair, I don’t know, but her stage presence was phenomenal. I dig a little deeper to the openers in my review in Pittsburgh Music Magazine, linked above.

The wait is over, finally, as the clock strikes 9. The band’s opening production video starts playing, which might I add was super spooky, and fit very well with the theme of the album. Then they all came out playing the beginning notes of “Eleonora”, the first track on the new album. And something happens and all I see is Josh Ramsay, lead vocalist, laughing at himself and then the song starts and the crowd sings the words, as Ramsay tries to compose himself. It was a very beautiful moment I loved being a part of. I actually have some photos taken while he was laughing to himself.

Anyways, they had a good mix of old and newer songs to cater to every Marianas Trench fan, which is always nice. But they did play a lot of songs from Phantoms . They played oldies such as “Fallout” and “Desperate Measures” from Ever After and “Who Do You Love” picking up part of the encore, from Astoria . During “Pop 101” and “Desperate Measures”, Ramsay made his way through the crowd, serenading the audience members who flocked around him. I didn’t even notice, but managed to get some shots while he was in there. Ramsay has a tendency to do crazy things like that during shows. He did something like that during the SPF 80’s tour, where he ended up through the crowd and performing part of a song on the bar top in the back of the venue. Crazy. Later on, Ramsay did a performance of tear-jerker, “One Love”, while solo on stage and it really brought the crowd in. The show ended with an encore, as usual, and with “Who Do You Love” and “The Killing Kind”, which is off of Phantoms .

It was an amazing show, and exceeded my expectations, as it always does. I wrote a little more in my review in Pittsburgh Music Magazine, plus there are more photos featured there as well. I highly recommend checking out MT when they come back. If you’re into the edgy kind of Pop/rock music, you’ll really like them. And they never put on a bad show, so they’re worth every penny.

Shot for Pittsburgh Music Magazine.

MARIANAS TRENCH Announce U.S. Headline Tour // New Album “Phantoms” out in 2019

marianas trench suspending gravity tour

“This is about long term, messy, real life love. Love with consequence. Not about drunken lust, or doing shots in a bar, or ‘living life for just tonight,’ but the kind of real-life relationship that takes a decade to build, through ups and downs. If I’ve learned one thing in my life as a performer it’s this; if you’re going to sing a song every night for the rest of your career, you better mean it – and I do.” –  Josh Ramsay

Over the last decade,  Marianas Trench  have consistently raised the musical bar both in the studio and via their explosive live shows. They have built their name on relentless touring across Canada and globally, headlining tours in the USA, Australia, New Zealand and Europe.

Since their 2006 debut,  Fix Me ,  Marianas Trench  have had two certified, double platinum-selling records ( Masterpiece Theatre ,  Ever After ) and two certified gold-selling albums with chart topping hits including “Rhythm Of Your Heart,” “Haven’t Had Enough,” and “Who Do You Love.” Along with double platinum and gold digital singles, the band has also garnered multiple SOCAN and MMVA Awards, number 1 videos on MuchMusic, JUNO Award nominations and won the 2013 JUNO Award for Group of the Year. Ramsay also received a GRAMMY nomination in 2013 for co-writing and producing Carly Rae Jepsen’s international breakthrough smash and certified US diamond selling single “Call Me Maybe.”
