What will I do during this tour ?

A tour of the Lascaux cave replica

The Lascaux cave located in the commune of Montignac-Lascaux in the Dordogne department in the Vézère valley is one of the most important decorated caves of the Upper Paleolithic by the number and the aesthetic quality of its works. It is sometimes called “the Sistine Chapel of cave art”. It was discovered in 1940 by 4 local teenagers who discovered what they thought was just a hole in the hill of Lascaux, they then decided to enlarge it and came face to face with these paintings made by our Cro-Magnon ancestors.

Today the original cave is closed to the public in order to preserve this site which is listed as a World Heritage Site by the UNSECO. However, in order to allow everyone to admire the masterpieces of prehistory, a reconstruction of the Lascaux site has been made. Get ready to go back in time by diving into the heart of the almost complete replica of the cave thanks to Lascaux IV and its 3D digital tour .

The authentic French restaurants that we were taken to allowed us to eat like locals; and then there were the wines!! But I need not have worried....David Jonke has been running the Bordeaux tours for only a year and we were lucky enough to have him as our driver and guide. It is often hard to get across to a driver/guide what it is you want but David understood perfectly: a visit to a picturesque town (St Emilion), and a small family run vineyard where there wouldn't be crowds of visitors. And, finally, most difficult of all, a good meal at a traditional local restaurant. And that is what we got - no menu, just eat what is put in front of you. Six courses, wine and coffee for 14 Euros each. Perfect. Thank you David for a wonderful, authentic day in the Bordeaux region. Read more Written 17 September 2017

Christian was very well informed on all areas of tourist interest as well as the current events happening in France. We were there the day before the Presidential election and he was open to all kinds of questions about their process and the implications of each candidate getting elected. He was raised in the states then relocated to France so his English is excellent. Very pleasant, arrived on time, was negotiable about extending his time an extra hour for us, allowed us to direct our plans for the day and as we changed our plans slightly went with the flow. • Birdlegs1944 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Personal & Informative Tour We'd known the Mayer family from our many years in Taos, New Mexico. Having watched Christian "Kri" grow up, we knew that his intelligent, engaging persona would be a proper fit for embracing a career as a tour guide...and we were not disappointed. Having studied, lived and raised a young family in France for more than 20 years, Kri possessed all the credentials we felt were necessary to guide us through the parts of Normandy and Brittany that we wanted to see in the short time we had available...we traveled independently for the remainder of our trip - thru the Loire Valley. Kri's knowledge of the regions, insights into the various sites and the timing for visitation were key to the fluidity within which we traversed this historically intense part of France. His suggestions as to food an lodging were spot on. As independent travelers for many years, we found that Kri's experience and keen insight into the behind the scenes nuances of specific villages and regions made our traveling acumen that much more well-rounded. Kri is quite a character and we are happy to recommend him to other travelers. Read more Written 17 December 2016
  • annadD3917EW 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Touring Paris and France (June 2016) We loved Paris and France more than ever and the sweetness of our loving may have had something to do with it. It was our ANNIVERSARY and we visited Paris and traveled throughout France in June! Paris - we loved its intimacy! We saw many of the world class sites including the Iconic Eiffel Tower, Arc Triomple, worlds most famous Louvre and Musee Orsay Museums, Seine River, Basilica of the Sacred Coeur and there were many cathedrals and churches with such rich history. We totally emersed ourselves in Paris, a romantic ambiance, classic architecture and incredible culinary scenes. The capital city of France has it all - beautiful squares, classical monuments, grande boulevards, and the Eiffel Tower which was full of the French glory. We enjoyed world class art, architecture, food, and romance and we planned and enjoyed seeing the Moulin Rouge Show! To us Paris was a romantic place to fall in LOVE all over again! We were really looking forward to our trip to Paris - castles, Loire Valley and wine tasting, Hot-Air Ballooning, the Burgundy, the Champagne Valley. The Loire Valley was a great way to get out of the city - a beautiful region of France and awesome wines. The Luxembourg Gardens had beautiful flowers and fountains . . . we also enjoyed sidewalks and cafes. It was nice during the day and very romantic at night! We could go on and on about chateau's and castles in France (we saw so many of them), but they were beyond beautiful and beyond our expectations. So what else can we say except that it had been perfect and our driver Christian was part of our our journey Sightseeing in France! We knew that we weren't going to have Paris forever, but at least we had it for a little while. We had so much fun and everything went smooth - no problems! We Loved, Loved, Loved It! Our trip with Christian was wonderful, a timesaver (private vehicle attention and not being on crowded buses), and he helped us out with the French-American translations which was a huge bonus! What more can we say! Thank you Christian and thank-you for the Sightseeing in France!! Brian and Anna Read more Written 31 October 2016

Program & Itinerary

Dordogne – Famous For History and Its Culinary Capital, Sarlat

Thousands of years ago, unknown artists created breathtaking etchings, drawings and paintings on the walls of prehistoric caves of which the most extraordinary examples are found in the Dordogne area. The region is also a Unesco World Heritage Site with its Prehistoric Sites and Decorated Caves of the Vézère Valley.

The Dordogne region is also famous for its outstanding quality and diversity of food and the culinary capital of the area is without a doubt Sarlat.

Moreover, the region is also home to more than 1000 Castles and Manors that date back to the Hundred Years War as both English and French fought to possess the area. Most of the castles line the Dordogne River and are perfect examples of medieval military architecture.

Depart from Bordeaux and Visit Lascaux IV Museum

Pick up in the morning at your centrally located hotel in Bordeaux and depart for a small group private tour towards the Dordogne Region. In the morning, reach Montignac where the world famous cave of Lascaux IV is located.

Discover brand-new Lascaux IV International Center of Parietal Art. The museum is a triumph of technology: unlike any other cave visits, Lascaux IV employs different set designs, displays, state-of-the-art interactive workshops and immersive technology to bring it to life.

For the very first time, all of Lascaux cave is revealed. This new center features an interactive gallery experience that blends Art, History and Culture with intelligence and sensitivity. At the heart of the experience you will discover a life size, state of the art facsimile cave that reveals the wonders of Lascaux as they were first seen.

In 2018, the museum was listed on Time Magazine’s 100 Greatest Places to visit saying: “The Snohetta-designed complex features some 600 prehistoric paintings and 1,000 engravings, all painstakingly re-created by a team of two dozen artists working from physical castings and advanced 3-D digital scans or the original artwork”!

Here, follow an English guided tour of the cave – a perfect reproduction of the original – and awe at some of the most magical paintings, masterpieces of Paleolithic Art.

Then reach the charming small town of Sarlat

Your full day tour then heads to Sarlat la Canéda. Because modern history has largely passed it by, Sarlat has remained preserved and is one of the town’s most representative of 14th century France. Located in the heart of the Perigord Noir, the town possesses an outstanding number of buildings and houses dating from the 13th to 18th century.

Highlights of the town include the Lantern of the Dead, Saint Sacerdos Cathedral, Saint Mary church and covered market, the house of La Boétie and so much more. On Wednesdays and Saturdays your guide will also point out all the main specialties that one can find in the Sarlat Market. During your stop in Sarlat, stroll through town for a short walking tour and then enjoy some free time for personal discovery and lunch.

Finally, visit the medieval village of Beynac

Arrive in Beynac to admire the village and the Castle. This Middle Ages construction, with its austere appearance, is perched on top of a limestone cliff, dominating the town and the north bank of the Dordogne River. The castle was built in the 12th century by the barons of Beynac (one of the four baronies of Périgord) to close the valley.

The sheer cliff face being sufficient to discourage any assault from that side, the defenses were built up on the plateau: double crenelated walls, double moats, one of which was a deepened natural ravine, double barbican. Lascaux, the Sistine chapel of Périgord

lascaux tour from bordeaux

The most famous cave in Périgord is renowned for its multiple prehistoric representations. It is not uncommon to find a cave with paintings or sculptures dating from Prehistory in Europe, but Lascaux has a variety and countless elements that make it a must for your stay in the Dordogne.

The original decorated cave is closed to the public since 1963 in order to preserve his exceptionally rare works. However, the International Center for Cave Art Lascaux IV offers a faithful reproduction. There bull room will impress young and old, open your eyes wide, you will find a prehistoric sign, a painting, an engraving... No less than 357 horses will be presented to you and even 1 human representation! Extremely rare representation in prehistoric art.

Lascaux, unique in Dordogne and in France!

lascaux tour from bordeaux

The Lascaux cave is unique In France ! There are certainly many other caves in the country, but none have such sumptuous representations of prehistoric art. In addition, the Montignac-Lascaux cave is the cave which concentrates the most reproductions, it is equivalent to 2 Chauvet and 4 Cosquer! Don't miss this national monument which makes the Dordogne famous throughout the world.

There are numerous prehistoric caves in the Vézère valley.

Of the 400 decorated caves discovered in Europe, 40 are recorded in Dordogne! A stone's throw from the Lascaux cave: prehistoric sites, prehistoric caves with paintings, prehistoric caves with engravings, prehistoric shelters with bas-reliefs, the National Museum of Prehistory, the Prehistory Interpretation Center... The Vézère valley is an open-air scene for those who want to discover the prehistoric period. The International Center for Cave Art Lascaux IV brings together on its walls an impressive collection of prehistoric works. Some of the signs present or its engravings are also found in the caves of Combarelles or Bara-Bahau, but one such concentration is exceptional .

Lascaux IV is the entire original cave

lascaux tour from bordeaux

Le facsimile intended to faithfully represent the walls and contours of the prehistoric cave. For this, the Montignac-Lascaux workshops carried out precision work. The hall of the bulls, the axial diverticulum, the nave or the apse could be recreated life-size to make you feel the emotion of discovery  ! The well, inaccessible in its initial configuration, was reproduced in the Lascaux Workshop to be able to admire the only human representation discovered to date in the Lascaux cave.

Lascaux, an architectural gem

lascaux tour from bordeaux

The International Center for Cave Art Lascaux IV is an almost imperceptible building as it is integrated into the hill. The architectural firm has strived not to distort this hill, classified as a Historic Monument since 1940, then listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the 1970s.

When we visit Lascaux IV we admire the village of Montignac-Lascaux . Indeed, the visit begins with the panoramic terrace to contemplate the view of the village and explain the formation of the Vézère valley and the geology of the place. Visiting a cave is above all venture underground, you will realize this throughout the visit from the ambient darkness linked to the underground aspect of the building. However, light also has its place in this place, it bursts out spectacularly between the reproduction of the cave and the workshop in this part called the fault!

Diverse visits

The International Center for Cave Art is a reproduction of the Lascaux cave, but not only that! In this building various tours are offered to the public.

Want an exceptional evening? There Cave Art and Gastronomy evening is made for you. After a unique visit to the cavity, a menu prepared by a star chef is served accompanied by stories et anecdotes on the life of the man from Lascaux.

lascaux tour from bordeaux

You are in in family  ? Prioritize the narrated visit. With an explorer, children will explore the cave in a fun way. A “visiting companion” is provided during this unforgettable experience in the heart of Prehistory.

If you want a traditional visit, know that the discovery of the International Center for Cave Art Lascaux IV is free for children under 5 years old and that combined tickets with other family sites are possible.

Do you prefer a private visit  from Lascaux? Book Lascaux II for your company or group of friends. For an attractive price, you can relive the discovery in the style of Marcel Ravidat, Jacques Marsal, Georges Agniel or Simon Coencas.

For easy access to the visit of Lascaux

Lascaux is like the Eiffel Tower, it’s unmissable during a stay in France! This is why it is better to prepare for your visit.

Here are some tips for you:

La online booking, you know ? It is primordial if you are planning a stay in the Dordogne in the summer season. The opening hours are wide but visiting slots fill up quickly in summer. Book as soon as possible on lascaux.fr

Are you early? That's good ! The International Center for Cave Art keeps a few tickets on sale every morning in summer when the counters open. Please note, the slots are established in advance, you will not be able to actually choose your visiting time but if you are just passing through, you can try your luck.

Are you more of an evening person? Even better ! The slots of Evening visits are often less complete. We know that you want to have a little Monbazillac on the terrace for an aperitif, but choosing an evening visit means choosing a more intimate visit.

No more visits for Lascaux IV? The Lascaux II cave is still open to the public, it still welcomes nearly 70 visitors per year. This facsimile opened in 000 already offers 1983% of the original cave, not bad for an introduction to the world of cave art.

And then, as we told you above, there is no shortage of caves in the Dordogne?

Since today is a short ride but your destination has plenty to offer, we recommend getting an early start to give you plenty of time to visit the very charming town of Sarlat . This town with its cobbled streets, old roofs, and warm stone walls give an exceptional heritage. Sarlat is a medieval town that developed around a large Benedictine abbey of Carolingian origin. The medieval Sarlat Cathedral is dedicated to Saint Sacerdos. Because modern history has largely passed it by, Sarlat has remained preserved and one of the towns most representative of 14th century France. If you happen to be there on Wednesday or Saturday morning, do not miss the wonderful local market.

You can decide to ride a longer distance (with more elevation) with a longer option that goes by the Chateau of Commarque (open to public), facing his rival the Chateau de Laussel (private).

11AM – VISIT THE LASCAUX CAVES

Arrive in Montignac and visit the Grottes de Lascaux. Lascaux Cave is a Palaeolithic cave situated in southwestern France, near the village of Montignac in the Dordogne region, which houses some of the most famous examples of prehistoric cave paintings. Close to 600 paintings – mostly of animals – dot the interior walls of the cave in impressive compositions. Besides these paintings, which represent most of the major images, there are also around 1400 engravings of a similar order. The art, dated to c. 17,000 – c. 15,000 BCE, falls within the Upper Palaeolithic period and was created by the clearly skilled hands of humans living in the area at that time. Lascaux was added to the UNESCO World Heritage Sites list in 1979, along with other prehistoric sites in its proximity.

Today, discover the brand-new Lascaux IV, the triumph of technology. After Lascaux II (the famous facsimile of the original cave) and Lascaux III (The Lascaux international exhibition), we now have the International Centre for Cave Art (Lascaux IV) at the foot of Lascaux hill. The site includes a facsimile of the entire cave – as well as the discovery of cave art from around the world and the Cro-Magnon civilization – through virtual reality technology. A truly special outing!

11AM – VISIT THE TOWN OF SARLAT

Follow a guided tour of the medieval town of Sarlat. Sarlat is in the region of Perigord Noir, a few hours east of Bordeaux City. Sarlat is a beautiful, well-restored town a few miles north of the River Dordogne. The old town, dating from both medieval and renaissance times is a pleasure to visit: discover its picturesque tangle of honey-colored buildings, alleyways and secret squares. We can also organize a tour on a “Gabarre” on the Dordogne river… Take a cruise along the river aboard a gabarre, a safe and modern replica of the flat-bottomed crafts used in the past centuries. Discover the local history and customs which have shaped the cultural identity of our river, its valley and its inhabitants.
