It can be sensory overload at times, but it’s well worth your time and money to get yourself to Morocco. I fell in love with it as soon as I arrived .

It’s not always easy to get around this country of 37 million people. For new travelers, Morocco’s up-close and personal nature can be a challenge. The country is a battery on your senses and, for those without a lot of travel experience, that can be overwhelming , which is why jumping on an organized tour might be one of the best ways to see it for the first time.

I myself went on a group tour in Morocco a number of years ago, and it was a blast and a great primer. If you’d like to travel in Morocco but are apprehensive at all (or simply want someone else to do all the organizing and guiding!), there a number of great travel companies that can take you around to all the greatest sites of this fantastic nation.

Here are some of the best tour companies in Morocco to help you plan your trip:

1. Intrepid

It’s always been my favorite multiday, small-group tour operator out there, and I always have an incredible time on its tours. I really love the guides, off-the-beaten-track itineraries, and commitment to the local community.

Intrepid also is environmentally friendly, uses local guides and transportation, and doesn’t rush the tours. The tours get a good mix of young and older travelers and balance being both fun and educational. You learn a lot without it feeling boring!

2. Culture Morocco Tours

This operator offers tours from various cities in Morocco. So, if you’re based in, say, Marrakech or Fes or Tangier or Casablanca, you can jump on a two-day or weeklong tour of another part of the country. There are also tours lasting up to 30 days, so chances are there’s an itinerary that suits your needs.

The company also offers private tours. While that might not be as cheap, you’ll be able to plan the trip exactly as you see fit. This is a great option for independent travelers who want the flexibility of designing their own excursion but the comfort and safety of going with a company.

3. Nomadic Tours

This company has been leading travelers around the sand dunes, narrow streets, medinas, and mosques of Morocco for close to two decades. One nice thing about Nomadic Tours is that it will never cancel the tour if enough people don’t sign up. Just two people? The tour is still on! It also doesn’t charge you a single supplement if you’re solo.

The company offers the usual highlight tours, but also ones aimed at teen travelers, families, and hikers (for example, there’s an 11-day trekking trip with Berbers in the Atlas Mountains). There are a dozen on offer, ranging from 5 to 15 days, using local guides.

4. Mountain Bike Morocco

This company only does bike tours: road bikes, mountain bikes, and e-bikes. Most are moderately challenging, so you’ll need to be in decent shape. However, you don’t need to be a professional cyclist — beginners are welcome!

Pedal through valleys in the mountains and stop in remote Berber villages to chat with the locals. Or do a nine-day bike excursion from the fabled Atlas Mountains to the coast. It also offers several single-day tours in case you just want to add in a day of biking to your existing itinerary. These day trips are easy or mildly difficult and suitable for beginners too.

The climate in Morocco varies wildly according to the season and area of travel. In the lowlands, the cooler months from October to April are popular among visitors. This time of year is pleasantly warm to hot (around 86°F) during the day and cool to cold (around 59°F) at night. Winter in the higher regions often brings snow and can therefore get seriously cold, particularly at night. Culture and customs

Morocco's culture has developed over centuries of influence from far and wide. Contemporary Morocco is a fascinating mix of Berber, Mediterranean, Andalucian and African traditions, which are present in the cuisine, clothing, music, language, customs and lifestyle. As an Islamic country, most Moroccans are Muslim; however, there are small populations of people who practice Judaism and Christianity. Geography and environment

Located in North Africa, Morocco has the best of many worlds within its boundaries. From the sun-drenched beaches of the coast to the sands of the mighty Sahara and the snowy peaks of the High Atlas and Rif Mountains, Morocco has great variety in its landscapes and terrain. History and government

Early history.

The land now known as Morocco has been inhabited for centuries, with Moroccan civilization being known for its richness in history and culture. Centuries of foreign trade, invasion, and dynastic rule have given Morocco many different cultural influences that are evident in today's society. From the Phoenicians who entered Morocco via the Mediterranean in the 6th century BC, to the Roman influence of 40 AD and the formation of Islamic Morocco in the years after, Morocco has evolved with the rise and fall of dynasties, formation and dissolution of empires and the birth of new governments, movements, and ways of living. Reaching its height under the Berber Dynasties of the 11th and 12th centuries (the Almoravids, Almohads, Marinids, and Wattasids), Morocco subsequently fell to Arab tribes in 1559. The current royal family are descendants of the Alaouite Dynasty who have largely ruled since the 1600s, despite enduring a few crises in the 18th and 19th centuries, mainly in relation to European influence in the area and surrounding countries.

Recent history

With the signing of the Treaty of Fez, Morocco was declared a protectorate of France in 1912 with Spain being allocated control of parts of Morocco, mainly in the north and south. European control was generally opposed by Moroccan citizens, with the people of Rif attempting to establish a separatist republic in 1921. Decades of opposition continued, with rioting and protests leading to increased political tension. In 1955, the road to Moroccan independence was paved by Mohammed V who negotiated reforms and the restoration of independence. By 1956, France had relinquished its protectorate of Morocco and in 1957, Mohammed V became king. In 1961, Hassan II assumed the title of King of Morocco and continued to rule until his death in 1999. His son, Mohammed VI, took over the mantle of king in 1999 and continues to rule today.

Fes is the cultural heart of Morocco and home to some of its most iconic sights. Feel every sense come alive in the medina. Shops, dye pits and mosques all vie for space and you're as likely to see a donkey as a car.

5. High Atlas Mountains

The mountains are best explored at the ground level by foot or bicycle. Travel through Amazigh villages, up along crop terraces, down through lush valleys and past orchards, goats and Moroccan rural life. The seriously fit can tackle Mount Toubkal for incredible views.

6. Todra Gorge

7. Moulay Idriss

The small Medina of ancient Moulay Idriss was once forbidden to non-Muslims. Now it is a pleasure to explore as the faithful gather to pay homage to the founding father of Islam in Morocco at the 8th-century mausoleum.

8. Ait Benhaddou

Perfectly preserved, this is one of Morocco's most picturesque kasbahs. Centuries ago it was a stop for caravans as they carried salt across the Sahara. Today, it is inhabited only by a handful of families and the odd film crew.

9. Casablanca

The very name conjures up images of war-time romance. But the real romance of Casablanca must be its French influences and the beautiful Hassan II mosque, the largest in Morocco.

10. Volubilis

Do some time travel and visit the ancient hilltop city of Volubilis, one of the Roman Empire's most remote bases. The ruins here are beautifully preserved and it's easy to believe you've stepped into the 2nd or 3rd century.

Rabat is Morocco's lively capital. Its history is long and colorful, having been host to Roman settlements, pirates, and more recently the Moroccan parliament. Stroll through the old quarter or enjoy views over the Atlantic Ocean from Kasbah des Oudaias.

12. Chefchaouen

You might recognize this city from the famous photos of its bright blue buildings. Set against a wide valley and tucked between two peaks in the Rif Mountains, much of Chefchaouen was recreated by Andalusian refugees escaping the Reconquista, so it might remind you of the hills of Spain.

Gnaoua World Music Festival

Seaside Essaouira hosts this world-famous festival that celebrates the mysterious music of the Gnaouas, brought to Morocco centuries ago via the African slave trade. Jazz, rock, blues, and pop music add a contemporary flavor, although the drums of the Gnaouas are the true soul of the festival.

Morocco is an extremely safe country to travel to as long as you abide by the local culture and customs.

Is Morocco a safe destination for LGBTQIA+ travelers?

We recommend LGBTQIA+ travelers exercise discretion when traveling in Morocco as homosexuality is not widely accepted in the community. Homosexual acts (including kissing) are illegal in Morocco and can attract a fine or even a jail sentence for offenders. That said, some towns (such as Marrakech and Tangier) are considered more gay-friendly than others. As long as travelers use discretion and avoid public displays of affection, travel in Morocco should not be a problem.

If you are traveling solo on an Intrepid group tour, you will share accommodation with a passenger of the same gender as per your passport information. Although we traveled during Ramadan, our driver and local tour guides were always available, even if it meant they missed a meal or prayer time. One of our travelers developed a bad cold and needed medical attention. Our travel team treated us like their own family as they ensured she received excellent care, made alternative arrangements, and even helped to communicate with healthcare professionals. The gift of a handmade and custom engraved leather bag with electrical outlet converters, maps, and snacks was a welcome and very classy gift. We had an incredible trip in Marrakesh. Iktichaf Travel really gives to experience travel its meaning. We had a real cooking class in which the best part was definitely buying the ingredients in the Souk (Moroccan market) then we’ve been to the Hamam and we came back to the Riad where we prepared the lunch to have a mint tea and a Henna tattoos session. My tajine was delicious, I was so proud of myself, I will definitely cook it at home. Then we went to workshop and we carved ourselves a silver plate with Moroccan geometric forms. We had a private tour from Casablanca to Marrakech through the Sahara dessert. The scenery through the dessert and the Atlas mountains was absolutely stunning! The stay at the Berber tents was also a unique life experience, having the chance to sit under the stars and have a chat with one of the Berber people, about how their life was living as a nomad before becoming a tour guide, and how he learnt English. We were even lucky enough to see a shooting star! We very much thank Premium tours for hosting us and offered Khalid to take care of us ! He is such a genuine person! Highly educated ! We discussed every single thing about Morocco, what an open minded and educated person, knowledgable about Morocco and berber history and culture ! And I'm sure many other reviewers have also said this, but the guide for the tour will never take you to any souvenir shops, or any other places that you do not want to go. Definitely recommended local travel agency if you are looking for real life experiences !

On arrival to Casablanca , Khalid was there to meet us at the airport! As soon as we started driving he started telling us many facts! We found him very informative and personable! we had a big group to organise a few days travel, from the minute we used this company the service was perfect, they got straight back to us, the costs was good and nothing was too much trouble for the guys. we will use them again where we can.

Six of us had a wonderful trip in Morocco with our guide Abdellah and driver Jamal. Abdellah's war cry is "Africa!" and indeed he showed us all the unique parts of Morocco. We took the ferry from Algeciras Spain to Tangier, visited the beautiful Blue City Chefchaouen, the fable city of Fes, the famous sand dunes of Erg Chebbi, the must see Medina (old city) of Marrakesh, and the seaside retreat of Essaouira. The most memorable part of our trip was the camel rides into and out of the Sahara desert camp. We saw the most beautiful sunrise and have the photos to prove it! If you are curious about Morocco and the Sahara desert, don't hesitate to contact MPT and ask for Abdellah as your guide. You won't regret it!

The Weather in Morocco

For many visitors, Morocco’s weather is the single largest factor in determining the best time to travel. Morocco follows the same basic seasonal pattern as any other Northern Hemisphere country, with winter lasting from December to February and summer lasting from June to August.

During the peak summer months, the weather can get uncomfortably hot, especially in Marrakesh, Fez, and southwest Morocco (remember that the further south you go, the closer you are to the Sahara Desert). Coastal destinations like Tangier, Rabat, and Essaouira are a more comfortable choice at this time of year because they benefit from the cool ocean breeze. Despite the heat, many people choose to visit Morocco at this time because it coincides with the European summer vacation.

Winters are generally mild, although temperatures at night can fall dramatically, with record lows of 30 degrees Fahrenheit recorded in Marrakesh. A dusting of snow is not unusual in northern Morocco, and​, of course, the Atlas Mountains are prone to heavy snowfall in winter. You can even ski at Oukaïmeden, located about 50 miles south of Marrakesh. Winters in the north of the country and along the coast can be pretty wet, while winters in the south are drier but colder, especially at night.

The Best Time to Trek the Atlas Mountains

Although it’s possible to trek the Atlas Mountains year-round, spring (April to May) and fall (September to October) generally offer the best weather. Although summers in the Atlas Mountains are typically mild and sunny, temperatures in the mountain valleys often exceed 86 degrees Fahrenheit, while afternoon thunderstorms are not uncommon. In winter, nighttime temperatures can plunge to 41 degrees Fahrenheit or lower, while snow precautions, including crampons and ice axes, are required above 9,800 feet.

Weather in the Atlas Mountains can be unpredictable at any time of year, and conditions depend heavily on what elevation you’re planning to trek to.

The Best Time to Visit the Coast

Weather-wise, the best time to visit Morocco’s beaches is during the summer, when average temperatures of around 80 degrees Fahrenheit offer plenty of opportunities for catching rays and an escape from the intense heat of the country’s interior. Sea temperatures are also at their warmest during this time of year, with the average water temperature for July recorded at 70 degrees Fahrenheit. However, summer is also peak tourist season, so book well in advance, especially if you plan on visiting hotspots like Essaouira or Agadir. If you prefer fewer crowds and lower prices, consider a trip in spring or fall instead.

Those attracted to the Atlantic coast by its reputation as one of Africa’s top surf destinations should ignore the advice above and travel to top spots like Taghazout and Agadir during the winter months. The swell is consistently good at this time of year, and surf breaks are operating at their best. With an average December sea temperature of 65 degrees Fahrenheit at Taghazout, a thin wetsuit is usually enough to keep out the cold even in the depths of winter.

Morocco is home to a whole host of exciting annual festivals, some of which are well worth planning your trip around. Some, like the Kelaa M’Gouna Rose Festival and the Erfoud Date Festival, are connected to the harvest and take place in the same month every year (with these particular festivals taking place in April and October, respectively).
