2011 Infiniti G37 Sedan Journey review: 2011 Infiniti G37 Sedan Journey

  • North American Car, Truck and SUV of the Year (NACTOY) Awards Juror

Compared with its sleeker sister, the Coupe, the G37 Sedan looks a bit frumpy from certain angles. Then again, in the shadow of a supermodel, I think we'd all fall a little short. Compared with other midsize premium sedans, the G37 Sedan is arguably one of the best-looking vehicles in its class and definitely one of the best-looking vehicles in the entirety of the Nissan/Infiniti lineup.

The Bottom Line

Photo gallery: 2011 Infiniti G37 Sedan Journey

We spent some time with the 2011 Infiniti G37 Sedan Journey to see if that beauty goes deeper than the skin.

Performance Under the sculpted hood is Nissan's workhorse 328-horsepower V-6 engine. A version of this engine (internally known as the VQ series) also finds its way under the hood of Nissan's Maxima, Murano, Quest, and 370Z and nearly every vehicle in Infiniti's lineup. This implementation displaces 3.7 liters and twists its crankshaft to the tune of 269 pound-feet of torque. Power is directed to the rear axle via a seven-speed automatic transmission with standard, sport, and manual modes.

The VQ-series engine beneath the hood of the G37 Sedan displaces 3.7 liters and outputs 328 horsepower.

Tapping the admittedly well-made optional magnesium paddle shifters felt rewarding to the fingertips. However, the manual shift mode itself left much to be desired and was actually rather annoying. The play-by-play went something like this:

As I approach a corner, I grab the paddle shifter for a downshift in preparation for the turn. Instead of immediately changing gear, the G37 hesitates for a moment while it decides what needs to happen. By now, I've slowed to the appropriate cornering speed and am easing off the brakes and beginning to turn the wheel. The gearbox decides that now is the perfect time for shifting and momentarily pops out of the current gear to match the revs for the downshift, canceling all engine braking and causing the car to lurch and toss its weight to the rear axle. As the sedan and I approach the apex, the gearbox pops back into the now lower gear and higher engine speed, suddenly reapplying an increased level of engine braking and causing the chassis to lurch forward and throw its weight back over the front axle, scaring the absolute crap out of me as I (and the traction control system) wrestle to keep the rear end of the sedan behind the front.

Drawing enjoyment out of the G37 Sedan turned out to be an exercise in the management of expectations. The standard and sport transmission modes are perfectly adequate for tooling around town or tackling a moderately challenging B-road, respectively. The latter mode is quite nice, allowing the engine's revs to rise slightly higher before shifting for increased power and even downshifts as the driver brakes in preparation for a turn. Leaving the G37 in this sport transmission mode and driving the sedan in a manner that's more Lexus GS than BMW 5-series yielded better results.

After a week of mixed casual and spirited driving, the trip computer reported 20.8 mpg. That's at the low end of the EPA estimated range of 19 mpg city and 27 mpg highway.

Scaling back on the sporty driving wouldn't be that big a deal if our G37 weren't loaded up with $2,520 worth of "sport" options. The $2,150 Sport Package upgrades the wheels to 18-inch aluminum rollers shod in summer performance tires, replaces the standard suspension with sport-tuned components, adds a viscous limited-slip differential, and upgrades the brakes to four-pot and two-pot calipers for the front and rear disc brakes, respectively. The package also adds the aforementioned magnesium paddle shifters as well as aluminum pedals, and swaps in a sportier body kit and sport seats. Those buckets are deeply bolstered, but with 12 directions of power adjustment for the driver's seat and 8 for the front passenger, they're more of a comfort addition than a true performance upgrade. Even the headlights become "Sport headlights," although we're not really sure what's so sporty about them, and a shiny red letter S gets affixed to the end of the "G37" badge on the rear decklid. Our sedan was also equipped with a $370 set of R-Spec high-friction brake pads.

The Car Tech staff was split over whether this Sport package was worth the dough. I think it's a bargain, but Editor-at-Large Brian Cooley seemed to think that the suspension was too stiff, too boy-racer for the upright G Sedan. (Check out the video at the top of this review to hear him explain this in his own words.) I welcomed the G's firm sport suspension setup and the levels of grip that it afforded. Admittedly, my idea of a "firm ride" may be slightly higher than many, but I liked that the G37's chassis communicated the bumps and imperfections of the road without crashing over them. Then again, the last car I drove before being tossed the keys to the G37 Journey was a low-spec 2012 Nissan Altima with a suspension made of what I believe to be mashed potatoes, so perhaps I was just eager for a bit of fun.

What you end up with upon adding that Sport package to the G37 Journey is a sedan that accelerates, stops, and handles better than its gearbox can keep up with. Fortunately, Infiniti offers the G37 Sport 6MT, which rolls in all of the options of the Sport Package, but drops the seven-speed automatic gearbox for a six-speed manual transmission with a proper clutch pedal. If you're the sort of driver who cares about anything listed in the Sport package's list of options or wants to explore the limits of the G37 Sedan's capability, the Sport 6MT is the trim level for you. Otherwise, skip the Sport package altogether and be prepared to take it easy.

Comfort and safety tech As it turns out, the G Sedan isn't a bad place to take it easy. With standard leather trim, automatic temperature control, and a spacious cabin that envelops up to five adults (four comfortably) with enough sound deadening to permit low-volume music and conversation without shouting in the middle of a rainstorm, I was more than happy to adjust the driver's seat to a more relaxed position and cruise. The wide tires and stiff suspension transmit a noticeable amount of road noise into the cabin at highway speeds, but not an unforgivable amount. Again, if a quiet ride is what you're after, you'll want to test-drive a G37 Journey sans Sport package.

Cabin comfort options start with the standard 7-inch information display mounted at the top of the center stack. This gives drivers access to the climate control systems, audio controls for the standard USB/iPod connection, XM Satellite Radio tuner, single-slot CD player, and Bluetooth hands-free phone system. This screen is also where the drive can display the view from the rearview camera, which is also standard.

Stepping up to the $2,150 Premium package adds a beeping sonar proximity detector to the rear camera system, power adjustment to the steering wheel, driver memory settings for the standard power seats, a power moonroof, and a 2.0GB Music Box audio storage system that curiously only lists 800MB of available space. We're not sure what happened to the other gigabyte of free space, but that only leaves room for about 250 songs. Most importantly, the Premium trim level replaces the standard six-speaker audio system with the rather loftily named Infiniti Studio on Wheels premium audio system by Bose. This 10-speaker rig performed, to my ear, about like any other Bose-branded audio system that we've tested. It would seem that Bose has tuned much of the boominess out of its car audio systems, as the G Sedan's setup produced a very balanced sound. However, strong bass is just two ticks of the bass level away and sound remains essentially distortion-free at most volumes as long as you don't get too far from center with the EQ's settings.

Our vehicle was also equipped with a $600 Interior Accents package that adds high-gloss Maple trim to the cabin.

Infiniti's hard-drive-based navigation system features easy-to-read maps and snappy performance.

Checking the box next to the $1,850 Navigation package unlocks the next level of tech. The 7-inch information display becomes a touch screen and is now backed up by a HDD-based navigation system, a DVD player, and Infiniti's voice recognition system. In the presence of the navigation system the standard XM Satellite Radio receiver begins to download XM NavTraffic and XM NavWeather data and advisories. The navigation system's larger 9.3GB hard drive also features more space for audio storage. Maps show 3D buildings and landmarks and are attractive and easy to read. However, Infiniti's system does look a bit Fisher-Price when compared with the advanced graphics of BMW's and Audi's navigation systems.

Because of the way Infiniti has tiered its packaging, the options must be added in a specific order. So if you're not interested in the Sport package, you'll want to stop here, because that's the next package. Unfortunately, skipping the Sport package means that you'll be locked out of selecting the Technology package. Even odder, selecting the Sport package automatically specs the Tech package, which causes me to question why they're even separate packages to begin with.

Our tester, at any rate, was equipped with both the $2,150 Sport and the $1,200 Technology packages. The latter option adds automatic windshield wipers, an upgraded climate control system, and Intelligent Cruise Control (ICC), which uses forward-facing radar to automatically maintain a set distance between the front bumper and the vehicle ahead. Interestingly, Infiniti used a similar active cruise control system on the FX50S that we tested a few years ago that would slow the vehicle all the way down to stop-and-go speeds if necessary. The ICC system in the newer G Sedan deactivates below about 35 mph. Additionally, the ICC can't be set while the automatic windshield wipers are active. This is presumably for safety. However, if you set the ICC first, activating the wipers will not then disable the cruise control.

The Intelligent Cruise Control system uses forward-facing radar to maintain a safe following distance between you and the vehicle ahead.

Speaking of safety, the ICC's forward-facing sensor also acts as a crash-detection sensor that can trigger pretensioning of the seatbelts and preloading of the braking system in the event of an impending collision. As much of our testing was conducted in the rain, we did not put this system to the test.

In sum All in all, with an $875 destination charge, our 2011 G37 Sedan Journey came to an as-tested price of $44,245. That's not a bad price relative to a similarly equipped BMW 335i sedan. The Bimmer would yield a more satisfying driving experience than the Infiniti, but at almost $10,000 more, it had better!

However, it can be difficult to optimize the G Journey Sedan to your needs because of the way Infiniti sets up its packaging. We'd recommend that the driver wanting to maximize comfort and safety tech stop checking option boxes at the Premium and Navigation packages and roll off of the lot with a $41,695 car. Performance drivers are probably looking at the G Coupe, but those who need four doors will want to test-drive the G37 Sport 6MT Sedan, which is an all-or-nothing affair that combines the options of the Premium, Navigation, and Sport packages with the addition of a six-speed manual gearbox for $41,495. Neither scenario features the option to spec the Technology package and its ICC system, but I'm not so sure that's a deal breaker for many.

2009 Infiniti G37x Coupe

Tire, Motor vehicle, Wheel, Vehicle, Land vehicle, Automotive design, Headlamp, Hood, Automotive tire, Automotive lighting,

Slushy Box, but Still a Great Powertrain

New for 2009, the all-wheel-drive G37x coupe is only available with a seven-speed automatic transmission equipped with steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters. We found the gearbox to be smart about selecting gears under normal driving conditions, but when pushed, it can slur shifts a bit and is slow to grab demanded ratios, but we’re really splitting hairs here.

With its 3.7-liter V-6 engine pumping 330 hp and 270 lb-ft of torque, the G37 offers BMW 335i performance for 328i money. The all-wheel-drive coupe weighs roughly 200 more pounds than its rear-drive sibling, but the two cars turn in equal 0-to-60-mph (5.3 seconds) and quarter-mile (13.9 seconds at 102 mph) times. The extra heft is offset by better traction at launch, and the additional poundage doesn’t affect the G’s sharp handling. What it does affect is braking, with the all-wheel-drive car turning in a 175-foot 70-to-0-mph braking distance, 11 feet longer than the rear-drive coupe.

On the skidpad, the G37x pulled a respectable 0.83 g, which is good, considering its optional 18-inch wheels were shod in 225/50 all-season rubber. The rear-drive G37 Sport registered 0.89 g wearing summer performance tires. Perhaps most impressive was that the understeer commonly associated with all-wheel-drive cars was pretty moderate by comparison in the G. Body control also is superbly managed, and the ride is firm but not overly harsh. The steering has a slight touch of on-center numbness but is otherwise, in true G fashion, sharp and communicative.

Not Much for Passengers or Cargo

Naturally, the G37x has the same delightful interior we’ve praised in the line’s other variants. The brushed, Japanese-paper-influenced trim on the center stack still impresses, and most surfaces feel quite good to the touch. The front seats are comfy for lengthy journeys, but the rears—as you might expect in a sleek two-door—are tight for real-size people; they really just amount to extra storage space. That’s a good thing, since the oddly shaped trunk can swallow only about seven cubic feet of cargo.

It’s a Bargain

The G37 is certainly inching closer to its 3-series rival in terms of dynamics and driving satisfaction but not in cost of entry. With a base price of $39,565, the G37x coupe undercuts a BMW 335i xDrive coupe by a substantial $5269. Optional packages can add up quickly with both cars, but considering the G’s $5200 advantage, you can load up your G37 with the Premium package (a sunroof, an upgraded stereo with iPod interface, Bluetooth, and more) and Navigation package for the cost of a base two-door 335i xDrive. That kind of value combined with the G’s high level of performance makes signing your name near another “x”—the one before a dotted line—an enticing proposition, indeed.

2010 Infiniti G37 Overview

When it was new, critics liked the 2010 Infiniti G37 because of its agile handling, impressive power and classy interior. In fact, many said the G37 is one of the most fun cars to drive in the segment, and is a strong rival to the highly-exalted 2010 BMW 3-Series . Those who don’t need the practicality of the G sedan may like the retractable hardtop convertible or coupe variant.

The base G37 sedan is powered by a 3.7-liter V6 that makes 328 horsepower, which was many reviewers’ favorite aspect of the car. Driving enthusiasts should be on the lookout for Sport 6MT model, which features a sport-tuned suspension and six-speed manual transmission. The G37 is available with either rear- or all-wheel drive. With rear-wheel drive and an automatic transmission, the G37 nets 19/27 mpg city/highway, which is about average for the class. Those with a manual transmission or AWD get slightly worse fuel economy. Sedan versions can carry up to 13.5 cubic feet of cargo in the trunk, which is about average for the class. However, coupes and convertibles have a much smaller trunk, and the convertible’s retractable hardtop takes up a lot of trunk space when stowed.

Critics were generally pleased with the interior, saying the design and materials are upscale, and that the seats are comfortable. In back, most critics said the sedan offers plenty of space, but there’s less room in coupe and convertible models. Standard equipment includes leather upholstery, push-button start, a Bose stereo, an auxiliary input jack and satellite radio. Upper trims and option packages add features like dual-zone climate control, Bluetooth, a power sunroof, navigation and a backup camera.

Other Cars to Consider

If you’re looking for a refined, sporty car, you may like the 2010 Cadillac CTS . Critics said the CTS offers a great balance of sport and luxury, with a suspension that offers great handling without being harsh.

Compared with the G37, the 2010 Lexus IS is a bit softer and less agile, but many critics still found the IS to be fairly sporty. Keep in mind that many critics said the base IS 250 felt a bit underpowered, so if you’re looking for something with a strong engine, stick to the more powerful IS 350.

Full Edmunds Review: 2011 INFINITI G Sedan G Sedan

The Infiniti G Sedan gains a new member to the family for 2011. The newly introduced Infiniti G25 has a smaller, less powerful V6 and fewer standard features, yet there's compensation in the cheaper price tag. To go along with this new entry-level model, the Infiniti G37 has been stripped of its base trim but has gained a pair of special-edition models. Four-wheel active steering has been discontinued.

Edmunds says

Now with a new base model and an even lower price to match, the 2011 Infiniti G Sedan is an even more compelling luxury sedan that offers a lot for your money.

Vehicle overview

Getting the most bang for your buck is rarely the most important aspect of a luxury car purchase. There's always going to be that unquantifiable X-factor, whether it's styling, perceived quality or the fact that it'll make your brother really jealous. Yet for those who would like to get the most power and the most stuff for the least amount of coin, the Infiniti G Sedan is a go-to choice.

For 2011, the new G25 trim level increases the G sedan's value proposition even further. While the 328-horsepower G37 provides rapid acceleration that similarly priced competitors simply can't match, it might be a case of overkill for many of its customers. To compensate, the 2011 Infiniti G25 features a 218-hp V6 that should prove to be just enough for most while also getting slightly better fuel economy. Thankfully, Infiniti didn't skimp on the equipment, as the G25 Journey trim level comes with the same abundant goodies as are standard on the G37. There will be a base G25, but it exists mostly to achieve an advertisement-friendly price point.

Also shared between both models is the G's engaging driving experience. Power will obviously differ, but the G is renowned for its compelling handling sourced from a platform shared with the Nissan Z car. Opting for the G37's Sport package enhances the G's talent around the corners.

Whether you go with the invigorating G37 or the more frugal G25, the 2011 Infiniti G Sedan indeed provides a lot of bang for your buck in terms of performance, space, luxury, convenience and high-tech features. Some other vehicles in its price range include the 2011 Acura TSX and TL, 2011 Audi A4 , 2011 Cadillac CTS , 2011 Hyundai Genesis , Lexus IS and 2011 Mercedes-Benz C-Class , but none offer the same value with such a compelling driving experience as Infiniti's sport sedan.

If value matters less to you, certainly the BMW 3 Series remains the top sport sedan choice, while some of the G's aforementioned competitors give off a more luxurious vibe. Yet whatever your luxury-car X-factor may be, the 2011 Infiniti G25 and G37 are worth your consideration.

2011 INFINITI G Sedan models

The 2011 Infiniti G Sedan is available in a number of different trim levels broken into two model designations based on engine: G25 base, G25 Journey, G37 Journey and G37 Sport 6MT (six-speed manual transmission). G25x and G37x models add all-wheel drive to the Journey trims. The G coupe and convertible are reviewed separately.

The base G25 comes well equipped with 17-inch alloy wheels, bi-xenon headlights, foglamps, keyless ignition/entry, cruise control, automatic climate control, an eight-way power driver seat, a four-way power passenger seat, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, leather upholstery and a six-speaker sound system with CD player, satellite radio and an auxiliary audio jack. The G25 Journey adds automatic headlights, heated mirrors, a rearview camera, dual-zone automatic climate control, rear-seat air vents, heated front seats, an eight-way power passenger seat, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, Bluetooth and an iPod/USB interface.

The G37 Journey differs only in the engine department. The G37's Premium package adds rear parking sensors, a sunroof (optional on G25 Journey), power-adjustable steering wheel, driver memory functions and a 10-speaker Bose sound system with digital music storage. The Sport Appearance package adds the Premium items plus a rear spoiler, chin spoiler and 18-inch wheels. The Navigation package adds a hard-drive-based navigation system, real-time traffic and weather, voice controls and additional digital music storage.

The G37 Sport 6MT adds all the Premium and Navigation package items, plus a six-speed manual transmission, a limited-slip differential, different 18-inch wheels, summer performance tires, a sport-tuned suspension, bigger brakes, sporty styling flourishes, sport seats with manual thigh extension and driver power-adjustable thigh and torso bolsters. If you want all this stuff without the manual, opt for the Sport package available on the G37 Journey. The G37 Limited is essentially a loaded Journey with Sport package that also includes a blacked-out grille, unique headlights, special styling flourishes and red leather upholstery. Only 350 will be made.

infiniti g37 journey vs base

Performance & mpg

The Infiniti G25 is powered by a 2.5-liter V6 that produces 218 hp and 187 pound-feet of torque. A seven-speed automatic is the only transmission. Buyers have a choice between standard rear-wheel drive and optional all-wheel drive (called G25x). Infiniti estimates fuel economy to be 20 mpg city/29 mpg highway for the rear-drive model. The G25x drops to 19/27 mpg.

The Infiniti G37 comes with a 3.7-liter V6 good for 328 hp and 270 lb-ft of torque. A seven-speed automatic is standard, but the Sport 6MT features a six-speed manual transmission. As with the G25, rear-wheel drive is standard and all-wheel drive (G37x) is optional as long as you have the automatic transmission.

In Edmunds performance testing, the G37 Journey went from zero to 60 mph in a rapid 5.4 seconds. The G25 is more modest, with an 8.0-second 0-60 mph time. EPA-estimated fuel economy for the G37 is 19 mpg city/27 mpg highway and 22 mpg combined with the automatic and rear-wheel drive, while the 6MT gets 17/25/20. The G37x returns 18/25/20. The new G25 improves upon these numbers only slightly with a 20/39/23 mpg rating. The G25x drops to 19/27/22.

Every 2011 Infiniti G Sedan comes standard with antilock brakes, stability and traction control, front side airbags and side curtain airbags. A rearview camera is standard on all but the G25 base. In Edmunds brake testing, the G37 Journey came to a stop from 60 mph in a very short 106 feet.

The Infiniti G Sedan has not yet been rated using the government's new, more strenuous 2011 crash testing procedures. According to 2010 ratings, the G Sedan received a perfect five stars in all categories except frontal-impact protection for the front passenger, which got four stars. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gives the G the highest rating of "Good" in the frontal-offset and side crash tests.

As V6s go, the 2011 Infiniti G25's is a smooth revver. It tackles its 7,500-rpm redline with none of the coarseness that has crept into the bigger 3.7-liter V6, owing to the 2.5-liter engine's lighter reciprocating masses. Acceleration should be satisfactory for many entry-level luxury sport sedan buyers.

However, for thrilling acceleration, we'd suggest the G37. We're not fans of the coarse noises it makes at higher engine speeds, but for the money, you can't beat it in this class. The G's handling is also praiseworthy as the sedan attacks curves with aggression and precision, yet remains poised and compliant when driven over less-than-perfect pavement. Think of it as a world-class athlete in evening wear. Steering feel is commendable, particularly with the Sport package's quicker steering ratio. This setup provides excellent feedback and a pleasant weightiness that builds progressively when cornering.

The seven-speed automatic transmission is mostly faultless. Quick gearchanges are at your fingertips via the steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters, and downshifts are executed with precise throttle blips to match revs. In testing, however, we've noticed that upshifts, even when in Drive, aren't as smooth as they should be for this class of car. Even so, this automatic makes a strong case for itself versus the optional six-speed manual, which has a pleasing bolt-action feel through the gates but is hampered by abrupt clutch engagement.

The G37 offers user-friendly controls, excellent build quality and a handsome design -- the latter highlighted by such items as the car's leather-accented magnesium shift paddles and the Japanese "Shodo" aluminum trim (or optional wood trim). Overall materials quality isn't exactly to Audi or Mercedes standards, but you are spending less money. The front seats are comfortable and well-bolstered, while the available sport-styled seats offer even more aggressive bolstering, though they may be a bit too snug for larger drivers. The backseat offers respectable space for this class, with the exception of the narrow center seat.

The G benefits from Infiniti's user-friendly electronics. The iPod interface standard on all but the base G25 is among the best available, while the myriad audio, climate and navigation controls are easy to decipher. The available Bose stereo is particularly impressive as well.
