Major-General

A search throws up a couple of threads where this HQ is mentioned, but I wondered if anyone could actually place the location on a modern map for me? In the autumn of 1918 it became the home for a while to No.44 Casualty Clearing Station:

I then left for Ypres, to visit Nos.11, 36, and 44 CCS at Brielen, a little to the West of Ypres …

… I found No.11, 36, and 44 CCS’s had only been open and working 48 hours, but except for the enormous shell holes in all parts of the neighbourhood, it was difficult to realise that the Units had not been working for at least a month. They were well established and the patients being well cared for.

Nos.11 and 36 CCS had accommodation under canvas for the Nursing Staffs, while the staff of No.44 CCS were established in a bomb and shell proof shelter, which until the advance had been Army Headquarters since 1914. The shelter was built in and under an old farm-house, which had constantly been bombed, leaving merely the walls and part of the roof, and inside this a wonderful structure had been erected, lighted by electricity and supplied with telephonic communication to all parts of France. The structure consisted of various rooms connected by passages, and one quite nice sitting-room with a big brick fire-place. As well as being protected by several feet of concrete, which completely covered the structure, it was well sand-bagged. The staff were most comfortably established there, the only draw-back being the large quantities of rats, which had been a great nuisance, but which were gradually being got rid of.

Chateau des Trois Tours is now called Kast. drie Torens in Dutch.

It is located to the west of Brielen, which is north west of Ypres on the road to Elverdinge (N8).

Hope this helps,

:)

Just to finish this story off - two photos, the first the Chateau des Trois Tours just before the Great War when it was the home of banker Georges Breydel:

I managed to get them the wrong way round, but you get the idea - during the war I believe it was the Headquarters of Canadian 1st Division.

SFayers

Thanks for posting the images of Chateau des Trois Tours. Interesting to see these as my grandfather was based here during July 1917 with 5th Siege Battery RGA (though I doubt it looked quite as majestic then as it did prior to 1914!).

Chateau des Trois Tours Pictures

I have quite a few personal photographs and postcards of the Chateau dea Trois Tours, Brielen. Quite a few years ago, I discovered the Chateau was mentioned in the War Diary relating to the regiment of a late Great-Uncle. Believing it to be a hotel at the time, I wrote asking for a brochure! On a visit to Belguim soon after, my husband and I were given the chance to have a look around the now private home. If anyone is interested, please send me a pm and I'll oblige. Some images I can send quite quickly ... the photographs in question will have to be digitally copied because they were taken before I had a digital camera. Heather

i just came across your post regarding Chateaux trois tours. I hope you don't mind ,e writing. I put a question on yesterday relating to this and was pointed in your direction! I'm looking for any info and noticed that i cannot see the photos you originally posted. Any chance you could send me them? My G G G Uncle was wounded near there in 1916 and i'm fascinated to llearn what i can.

Would it be possible for me to see your photo of the chateau before the war. My GGrandfather was there in 1915 before he was killed.

I am hoping to see the area as it is now myself in a couple of weeks when I go to visit his grave.

And the current Chateau from Google Earth

post-42671-0-98566100-1304968703.jpg

If memory serves (which it doesn't always!) I seem to recall the image Sue originally posted on this thread was of the same pre-war picture postcard or if not a very similar view as the one my pal scanned for me (i.e. the one in Roger's post).

Are you visiting the Chateau itself when you are there? If you are, I wonder if you'd be able to take a photo for me please? In July 1917 the RGA Siege Battery my grandfather served in was located more-or-less in the area where I've drawn the red ellipse on the following Google Earth image, just to the north of the Chateau grounds. If it is possible for you to take a photo of this general area from the tree-lined road / lane approaching the Chateau (i.e. the one off the Brielen road) for me I would be extremely grateful; but if it's not practicable to do so then please don't worry!

Many thanks and kind regards

Yes, one that I posted was exactly the same as the one above, and I have a second one - I'll look it out and post it in a minute.

:w00t:

And here is the second pre-war shot

troistoursscana.jpg

Thanks Sue,

:D

Kind regards

An indication of the stagnation in that sector - my Grandfather's 18 pounder RFA Battery was on the road in front of Brielen Farm two years earlier!

Amazing isn't it? It surprises me that even by the late spring / early summer of 1917 the Chateau area was considered by those stationed there as a 'cushie' spot, at least until that point the area having received relatively little attention by German artillery - that all changed from end June / July 1917 onwards of course!

Did you manage to get a copy of the London Gunners ?

In the end I went for Farndale's History of the Royal Regiment of Artillery, Western Front 1914-18.

Many thanks and kind regards Steve Hi Steve Have just got back from France/Belgium and managed to get your photo. This was taken from the W tip of the playing field looking NW. I have cropped and resized the original but if you would like me to send that and a couple of other similar ones I took then if you could let me know your email address somehow I can send them too--they are approx 5-6 Mb each Paula

That's really superb! It looks like you had cracking weather whilst you were there. Many thanks for taking the time to take the photos for me!

My email address is s.fayers 'at' abdn.ac.uk (just replace the 'at' with the normal @ symbol). Would you mind if I included one of the photos on my website commemorating those who served in 5 Siege Battery RGA during WWI when it's eventually finished? You would, of course, be acknowledged.

Many thanks again and kind regards

Following on from this old messages, they have given me a bit more insight about the Chateau des Trois Tours. My great-uncle, Pte. Arthur Price, 13th Battalion Royal Welsh Fusiliers. was in the area in October 1916. The War Diary gives the Chateau as his location as the starting point for the trench raid he was involved with on the 12th October. A trench raid where he returned as a casualty and sadly died of wounds the next day. Does anyone know how far the Chateau was from the front line? I am trying to pinpoint the exact location where he was fatally injured and although I have visited the battlefield many times, I still haven't found the spot.

Sue, I don't know which area was raided, but the distance from the chateau to the front is 3-4 km.

The battalion diary may give some info on the raid, also the brigade diary may have plan or report on the raid. If you post that on the forum I'm sure someone will help.

PS REs generally accompanied an infantry raid, and often have good records, so the RE diary (probably123 RE coy, or 124/151 RE coys) may be worth a look.

There is so much to see and do and I feel we did, with our wonderful guides a great job beginning to see all.

It was a great experience - Treasures of Two Capitals (5 star), June 2017

It was a great experience. The guides were knowledgeable and spot on time. Especially the guide in St. Petersburg seemed to get us to places with great timing. We beat the majority of crowds. Maybe that’s partly a result of being a small group, being that we didn’t have to wait for stragglers. The weather cooperated and we didn’t get caught in any rain storms.

Everybody in our group got along perfectly. We were all experienced travelers and shared information on places we’d been to. The ladies are now sharing pictures of our trip to Russia via email.

St. Petersburg Russia Tours

St. Petersburg is one of the world’s most beautiful cities. It was built on a collection of islands where the Neva River meets the Gulf of Finland and is divided further by a system of canals earning the city the name the Venice of the North. St. Petersburg was referred to as Peter the Great’s Window to the West because the great Tsar and reformer Peter the First designed the city to be Russia’s most European. The European feeling of the city is as true today as it was during the early 1700s. The embankments and boulevards are full of 18th and 19th century palaces of the nobility giving St. Petersburg an almost fairytale atmosphere. The historical city center is huge and dominated by the Winter Palace (former residence of the Tsars) which now houses the world famous Hermitage Museum . St. Petersburg Russia indeed is one of the most romantic and beautiful cities on earth. Our company is based in St. Petersburg, Russia allowing us to offer the widest variety of St. Petersburg Russia tours and excursions available on the Internet. All of our tours are designed so that our guests experience maximum enjoyment and become immersed in the culture and history of this great, Russian city. All our tours are private and can be fully customized upon your request. You can either choose one of our ready-made packages or create your own. Because we are locally based, we can offer excellent prices and the most knowledgeable guides in the city.

St. Petersburg in the 19th century

St. Petersburg – a Historical Gem

The city has witnessed some of the most dramatic and important moments in Russian history since its founding in 1703 by Peter the Great , making the city especially important for curious travelers coming to Russia. St. Petersburg was the scene of the Decembrist uprising , the famous court of Tsarina Catherine the Great , the assassination of Tsar Pavel and Alexander II and the home of Rasputin , the Siberian mystic. The last Tsar, Nicholas the II, was overthrown at the Winter Palace and the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution and Lenin brought communism to power here. After the revolution, the name of the city was changed to Leningrad. During the Second World War, Leningrad was under siege and fully blockaded by the Nazis for almost 3 years, resulting in the deaths of up to 1.5 million of its citizens. Our St. Petersburg tours take you to the places associated with many of these events and more.

Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers

What is the best time of year to go to st petersburg.

St Petersburg is a spectacular city regardless of the time of year, it all depends on your itinerary. Summertime can be wonderfully warm and brings the White Nights, nearly 24-hours of sunshine and a party atmosphere. However, St Petersburg will be very busy and accommodation can be much more expensive. St Petersburg is quite cold in winter, but enchantingly beautiful and with less crowds. The worst weather takes place in November and March. Check to see if your visit will coincide with Russia’s holidays and festivals, and for more information about the best time to visit, read our guide .

How many days are enough in St. Petersburg?

With a carefully planned and researched itinerary you can see St Petersburg’s main sights over a long weekend. St Petersburg’s city centre is compact compared to Moscow’s, and its most famous attractions are reachable by foot from one another. Find centrally located accommodation, acquaint yourself with public transport, and book tickets in advance so that you can skip the queues. To make the most of a short trip, check out our informative St Petersburg city tours with options to suit all interests.

Is it safe to walk around St Petersburg, Russia?

Walking around St Petersburg is no more dangerous than exploring any European city if you are sensible with your belongings and use common sense. The city centre rarely feels isolated as it is quite compact, and many bars and restaurants are open 24/7. During White Nights there are nearly 24 hours of sunlight, meaning that you’ll never venture anywhere in the dark. If you travel by taxi make sure to book in advance, or take public transport, which is perfectly safe and tourist-friendly. For more information, read our guide about staying safe in Russia .

Do they speak English in St. Petersburg?

St Petersburg is Russia’s most western-leaning city and staff in city centre restaurants, hotels, shops and attractions can generally accommodate English speaking tourists. There are also English-speaking tourist police. The metro and bus service maps have English translations, and intercom announcements are also made in English. If you’d prefer to travel by taxi, the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber) works in multiple languages, although it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. Younger Russians are more likely to speak basic English than older Russians, but Google Translate is useful if you get completely stuck.

Les Trois Érables - Les Trois Érables Boutique Inn. Affordable Luxury in the Heart of Wakefield.

Our Village

Les trois erables.

Les Trois Érables is not only a beautiful old heritage mansion – it is loaded with local history and lore. It was constructed in 1896 by Dr Hans Stevenson, a country doctor born in Wakefield to Irish immigrants.  He hired Moses Edey, a prominent Ottawa architect – who also designed the Aberdeen Pavilion at Lansdowne Park in Ottawa – to design the house.

When you come, you will note Edey’s use of high ceilings, gorgeous stained glass and fine woodwork throughout.  It is a Victorian-era house that, with its large wrap-around porch and turrets, is an excellent example of the neo-Queen Anne architectural style.  Right on the riverfront in the heart of the village, Les Trois Érables is truly a Wakefield landmark.

Dr Harold Geggie came to Wakefield from Montreal in 1911 to intern with Dr Stevenson, and, upon Dr Stevenson’s unexpected death later that year, nervously assumed his country medical practice.  Dr Geggie later purchased the house and even married Dr Stevenson’s daughter, Ella!  They had three sons, all of whom became doctors themselves in the family practice.  “The Maples”- as the family called the house – was not only the family residence but also the doctors’ office, dispensary and examination and operating rooms.

It was quite a challenge in those days to care for the patients who were widely dispersed in this very rural area – often horse and buggy was the only means of getting around.  Many locals tell us today of their experiences of being cared for by the doctors, including being given birth to, right in the house! Dr Geggie – the self-described “simple, country doctor” – lamented the absence of a hospital for the duration of his practice and made it his mission to establish one in Wakefield.  His legacy is the Gatineau Memorial Hospital which he founded in 1952.  The original building is now Le Manoir seniors residence, just down the road on Riverside Drive at the mouth of the La Pêche River.

earl les trois tours

The house remained in the Geggie family as “the Doctors’ house” until 1980.  It was later transformed into a beautiful bed & breakfast inn, keeping the original features of Moses Edey’s vision of a neo-Queen Anne Victorian mansion.  Many of the Geggie family continue to live in the community.  In fact, for a fuller description of the history of the house and the community, see some of the publications of Norma Geggie, daughter-in-law to Dr Harold, who at over 90 years old is still very active in promoting historical and social causes in the area.  Here is her homage to Dr Geggie on the 100th anniversary of his arrival in Wakefield in 1911.

Come experience part of the history of Les Trois Érables yourself.  We have on display many historical photos and artifacts in the guest kitchen, and have made available a copy of Dr Geggie’s memoirs (as recounted by Norma Geggie) in each guest room for you to peruse.

  • Wakefield at a Glance

Nestled in a postcard-perfect setting along the Gatineau River, the bilingual village of Wakefield possesses a friendly and funky atmosphere created by its diverse residents and nurtured by its surroundings.  Whether you’re into nature, art, music, outdoor adventure, shopping or fine food, you’ll fall in love with this place.

Incredibly, this peaceful utopia is a mere twenty-minute drive from downtown Ottawa, Canada’s capital city.  A spectacular natural setting with access to a world-class city is what makes Wakefield a truly unique and remarkable village.

Wakefield has developed a reputation for a somewhat bohemian lifestyle and boasts a number of small cafes, pubs, and galleries.  Many young families live in the area, enjoying its lifestyle, services, and resources.  Many artists live in the surrounding mountains and valleys.

The village’s primary industry is tourism.  The main attractions, in addition to a picturesque setting, are the Wakefield Covered Bridge spanning the Gatineau River, the Fairbairn House Heritage Centre, the MacLaren Mill built in 1838 and named after an early family in the region (now restored and operated as the Wakefield Mill Inn and Spa); and, famous for its music, Black Sheep Inn (Auberge Mouton Noir).  The village also provides a direct access point to Gatineau Park.  Learn more here about  Wakefield .

  • Wakefield History

Steeped in the history of the log drive, Wakefield owes its existence to settlers who favoured the the junction of the La Pêche and Gatineau rivers.  Its magnificent riverfront location surrounded by the beautiful Gatineau Hills has lured cottagers and tourists since the early 1900s.  Before that, Wakefield’s lively riverfront served the needs of area farms and distant logging camps.

The area’s first homesteaders were Joseph Irwin and Mary Pritchard, who came to historic Wakefield Township via Bytown (Ottawa) from Northern Ireland in 1829.  Ten other Irish families eventually cleared acreages near the townsite.  A Scottish millwright and stonemason named William Fairbairn built Wakefield’s first grist mill beside the waterfall on the La Pêche River in 1838.  His original house (1861) is now used as the Fairbairn House Heritage Centre near the covered bridge.  Fellow countryman David MacLaren, a hardware merchant from Glasgow, built a sawmill in the centre of the village in the 1840s, and then added Fairbairn’s grist mill to his operations.  Later he built a large brick three-storey woolen mill, which was a leading employer in the Gatineau Valley until the 1930s.  The grist mill has now been converted into the Wakefield Mill Inn and Spa.  The brick-clad Edwardian-Gothic style MacLaren House (1860) next door is used for conferences.  The MacLaren family cemetery behind the mansion and adjacent to the Trans-Canada Trail contains the grave of former prime minister Lester B. Pearson.

Many of Wakefield’s original inns, churches, stores and homes remain.  The Earle House (circa 1880) on the corner of Valley and Riverside drives, belonged to Robert Earle, a carpenter, carriage-maker and blacksmith is now the Cafe Molo.  Patterson’s General Store at 740 Riverside Dr (circa 1880) is now the Jamboree gift shop and retains much of its original interior.  The Wakefield train station (1892) operated as the Pot-au-Feu Restaurant since 1970.  And, of course, there is our own Les Trois Érables, the neo-Queen Anne style doctor’s residence built in 1896.  A number of Wakefield homes have been awarded heritage plaques by the Municipality of La Pêche.  Many are our neighbours on chemin Burnside which makes for a lovely walk up the street from Les Trois Érables.

Lastly, there is the iconic Wakefield Covered Bridge, a striking replica of an older structure destroyed by fire in 1984.  No visit to Wakefield is complete without a stroll across the covered bridge.
