Man Kathryn Hahn 's character reallllly needs a vacation in this trailer for The Visit . She looks like she's having so much fun while her kids are trapped with their insanely creepy grandparents. It looks like writer/director  M. Night Shyamalan is returning to the big screen with the express intent of declaring all out war on the elderly, and I like it. I remember hating staying the night at my grandparents as a kid, and this trailer somehow is able to take that internal itchiness and dial it up into some outright weirdo horror. I also like how the traditional "jump scare" moment towards the end of the trailer is actually a misdirect that leads into an archly funny line.

Check out The Visit trailer below, along with the first images. The film also stars  Deanna Dunagan , Peter McRobbie , Ed Oxenbould and Olivia DeJonge . It was produced by Jason Blum and  Marc Bienstock . It hits theaters on September 11th, 2015.

Once the children discover that the elderly couple is involved in something deeply disturbing, they see their chances of getting back home are growing smaller every day.

The Ending Of The Visit Explained

Contains spoilers for  The Visit

M. Night Shyamalan is notorious for using dramatic twists towards the endings of his films, some of which are pulled off perfectly and add an extra layer of depth to a sprawling story (hello, Split ). Some of the director's other offerings simply keep the audience on their toes rather than having any extra subtext or hidden meaning. Shyamalan's 2015 found-footage horror-comedy  The Visit , which he wrote and directed, definitely fits in the latter category, aiming for style over substance.

The Visit follows 15-year-old Becca Jamison (Olivia DeJonge) and her 13-year-old brother Tyler (Ed Oxenbould) when they spend the week with their mother's estranged parents, who live in another town. Loretta (played by WandaVision 's Kathryn Hahn ) never explained to her children why she separated herself away from her parents, but clearly hopes the weekend could help bring the family back together.

Although The Visit occasionally toys with themes of abandonment and fear of the unknown, it wasn't particularly well-received by critics on its initial release, as many struggled with its bizarre comedic tone in the found-footage style. So, after Tyler and his camera record a number of disturbing occurrences like Nana (Deanna Dunagan) projectile-vomiting in the middle of the night and discovering "Pop Pop"'s (Peter McRobbie) mountain of used diapers, it soon becomes clear that something isn't right with the grandparents.

The Visit's twist plays on expectations

Because Shyamalan sets up the idea of the separation between Loretta and her parents very early on — and doesn't show their faces before Becca and Tyler meet them — the film automatically creates a false sense of security. Even more so since the found-footage style restricts the use of typical exposition methods like flashbacks or other scenes which would indicate that Nana and Pop Pop aren't who they say they are. Audiences have no reason to expect that they're actually two escapees from a local psychiatric facility.

The pieces all come together once Becca discovers her  real grandparents' corpses in the basement, along with some uniforms from the psychiatric hospital. It confirms "Nana" and "Pop-Pop" escaped from the institution and murdered the Jamisons because they were a similar age, making it easy to hide their whereabouts from the authorities. And they would've gotten away with it too, if it weren't for those meddling kids.)

However, after a video call from Loretta reveals that the pair aren't her parents, the children are forced to keep up appearances — but the unhinged duo start to taunt the siblings. Tyler in particular is forced to face his fear of germs as "Pop Pop" wipes dirty diapers in his face. The germophobia is something Shyamalan threads through Tyler's character throughout The Visit,  and the encounter with "Pop Pop" is a basic attempt of showing he's gone through some kind of trial-by-fire to get over his fears.

But the Jamison kids don't take things lying down: They fight back in vicious fashion — a subversion of yet another expectation that young teens might would wait for adults or law enforcement officers to arrive before doing away with their tormentors.

Its real message is about reconciliation

By the time Becca stabs "Nana" to death and Tyler has repeatedly slammed "Pop-Pop"'s head with the refrigerator door, their mother and the police do arrive to pick up the pieces. In a last-ditch attempt at adding an emotional undertone, Shyamalan reveals Loretta left home after a huge argument with her parents. She hit her mother, and her father hit her in return. But Loretta explains that reconciliation was always on the table if she had stopped being so stubborn and just reached out. One could take a domino-effect perspective and even say that Loretta's stubbornness about not reconnecting and her sustained distance from her parents put them in exactly the vulnerable position they needed to be for "Nana" and "Pop-Pop" to murder them. 

Loretta's confession actually mirrors something "Pop-Pop" told Tyler (before his run-in with the refrigerator door): that he and "Nana" wanted to spend one week as a normal family before dying. They should've thought about that before murdering a pair of innocent grandparents, but here we are. 

So, is The Visit  trying to say that if we don't keep our families together, they'll be replaced by imposters and terrify our children? Well, probably not. The Visit tries to deliver a message about breaking away from old habits, working through your fears, and stop being so stubborn over arguments that don't have any consequences in the long-run. Whether it actually sticks the landing on all of those points is still up for debate.

Calling all true crime fans, Netflix's series Monsters is set to return to our screens to unpack a familiar tale - the story of siblings Lyle and Erik Menendez .

The show will depict the tale of the notorious Beverly Hills brothers, who were convicted of murdering their parents José and Kitty in 1996.

The highly-anticipated second instalment of Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan's series comes on the back of the success of their original series which told the story of murderer and cannibal Jeffrey Dahmer.

The official synopsis for the Netflix show reads: 'While the prosecution argued they were seeking to inherit their family fortune, the brothers claimed – and remain adamant to this day, as they serve life sentences without the possibility of parole – that their actions stemmed out of fear from a lifetime of physical, emotional, and sexual abuse at the hands of their parents.'

'Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story dives into the historic case that took the world by storm, paved the way for audiences' modern-day fascination with true crime, and in return asks those audiences: Who are the real monsters?'

What happened in the case?

So, what happened in the case of the infamous Menendez murders ?

Though the brothers admitted to the killings, there is still a lot of mystery surrounding the case. While the pair alleged that their parents' murders were their solution to a lifetime of abuse at the hands of the wealthy couple, some speculate that they committed the crime out of greed.

The public continues to be fascinated with the case almost thirty years on. This is likely due to the bizarre actions carried out in the six-month period between the killings and their arrest, which involved Lyle and Erik spending their days partying and shopping, reportedly blowing over $1million.

While the brothers spent this time living in luxury, they were also attending therapy sessions with Dr. Jerome Oziel. It was these meetings that would lead to their eventual arrest.

Erik confessed what the pair had done in a session with the therapist after the stress of the situation gave him an ulcer. Dr Oziel's mistress overheard the admission on tape and immediately reported the brothers to the police.

It wasn't until the third trial, almost seven years after the murders, that the pair were convicted.

Barbara Walters secured one last chilling interview with the brothers right before they were sentenced, where they insisted they were 'just normal kids'.

The men are still serving life sentences for murdering their parents to this day.

Who's starring in the Netflix series?

In the show, Nicholas Alexander Chavez will star as Lyle and Cooper Koch will play Erik. Javier Bardem and Chloë Sevigny will act as the pair's slain parents. Dallas Roberts will star as Dr. Jerome Oziel and Leslie Grossman will play his mistress.

The first teaser trailer for Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story was released on Tuesday. The foreboding clip shows the family-of-four smiling as they pose for a portrait, but all is not as it appears.

The nine-part Netflix series will hit the streaming platform on September 19, and we can hardly wait!

Following on from Netflix true crime series Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story , which became one of the most-viewed programmes in the streamer's history, creative duo Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan have since turned their attention to another harrowing tale: the 1989 murders of José and Mary Louise "Kitty" Menendez at the hands of their own sons, Lyle and Erik Menendez.

The two brothers killed their parents in their Beverly Hills home in 1989. Following an initial mistrial, the brothers were eventually handed life sentences with no chance of parole, with prosecutors arguing that the crime was motivated by a desire to inherit their father's estate.

However, the Menendez brothers have, to this day, maintained their claim that they killed their parents out of fear, arguing that they suffered many years of abuse from their father.

Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story marks the second instalment in Murphy and Brennan's true crime anthology series, which "tells the stories of other monstrous figures who have impacted society".

Another drama has already been greenlit by Netflix, the focus of which has yet to be revealed.

From a modern Netflix twist on Greek gods to the return of “Only Murders in the Building”

This week we are blessed with some brand-new series and films, like the Greek god-filled “Kaos” (on Netflix), a Lee Daniels-directed horror thriller called “The Deliverance” (also on Netflix), plus documentaries on Gary Coleman (“Gary” on Peacock) and “Baywatch” (“After Baywatch: Moment in the Sun” on Hulu). Also, we’ve got a new Adam Sandler stand-up special (“Love You” on Netflix) and a “Terminator” anime series (“Terminator Zero” on Netflix). Oh and “Only Murders in the Building” (on Hulu) and “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” (on Prime Video) return!

Charlie Covell, creator of “The End of the F***ing World,” returns with a new series that focuses on Greek gods in modern society who discover that a trio of humans have a mysterious connection that could bring about the end of the f***ing world. (Are we sensing a trend here?) Jeff Goldblum plays Zeus, a role originally earmarked for Hugh Grant (who had to leave due to scheduling conflicts), with Janet McTeer as Hera, Cliff Curtis as Poseidon, David Thewlis as Hades and Debi Mazer as Medusa. The supporting cast also includes Billie Piper, Eddie Izzard, Aurora Perrineau and Stanley Townsend. Based on the early marketing materials, the series looks funny and outrageous and incredibly expensive. “Kaos” was shot in Spain and it looks unlike anything else on Netflix, mixing real world anxiety with a stunning mythological scope (there’s even a black-and-white journey to hell). If you’re missing something like “Good Omens” or “American Gods,” “Kaos” should do the trick. Thank the gods. [ TRAILER ]

“The Deliverance”

Lee Daniels, the director of “Precious,” “The Paperboy” and “The Butler,” returns for his first film as a director since 2021’s “The United States vs. Billie Holiday.” And this time around he has a very different agenda. That’s right. Lee Daniels wants to scare you silly. Daniels reunites with his Billie Holiday, Andra Day, who is playing Ebony, an acholic mother, living in Pennsylvania, whose children reportedly become possessed by a demonic entity. When the project went up for sale in early 2022, it triggered a bidding war, with Netflix coming out on top (and paying more than $65 million for the privledge). It’s easy to see why the movie was so attractive. Beyond Daniels and Day, the movie stars Glenn Close, “Stranger Things” star Caleb McLaughlin, Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, Omar Epps, Mo’Nique and Kimberly Russell. And while reviews have been decidedly mixed so far, the allure of Daniels making an outrageous supernatural thriller is too good to pass up. You know you’ll be watching this one. We will be too. Gary Coleman, who played 8-year-old Arnold Jackson on “Diff’rent Strokes,” takes center stage in this documentary. Coleman, of course was known for his catch phrase (“Watcha talkin’ ’bout Willis?”) and for appearing on the sitcom for almost 10 years. Later, he would struggle with legal battles, substance abuse problems and financial issues, and following a series of surgeries and seizures, died tragically at the age of 42. According to the official synopsis, “for the first time, viewers will experience Coleman’s private world through exclusive interviews with his fellow actors, industry insiders and his estranged ex-wife and parents.” Coleman lived a contentious, pain-filled life, for sure, but he brought joy to so many and is still widely considered one of the greatest child actors of all time. “Adam Sandler: Love You”

Adam Sandler’s first Netflix sstand-up special since 2018’s “100% Fresh” is unique in that it was directed by Josh Safdie, one of the A24-approved filmmakers behind Sandler’s brilliant “Uncut Gems.” Filmed at the Netflix-owned Paris Theater in New York, the streamer promises a “thrillingly unpredictable comedy special featuring songs, jokes, party-crashing dogs and plenty of love.” This is must-see TV. “Terminator Zero”

The “Terminator” franchise goes anime. This is the first time the franchise has dipped into animation (since a very janky web series used to promote “Terminator Salvation,” at least) and the results are properly thrilling. Set within the universe of the original films but also apart from it, the series follows a scientist (Andre Holland), who is developing an AI that competes with Skynet and, of course, a freedom fighter from the future (voiced by Sonoya Mizuno from “House of the Dragon”) who travels back in time to help save said scientist and his family from an evil terminator (voiced by Timothy Olyphant). When Will Deadpool & Wolverine Release On Streaming?

Deadpool & Wolverine Will Stream On Disney Plus. There is no official word on when Deadpool & Wolverine will be available to stream. As it is officially part of the MCU, it will almost certainly be exclusively available on Disney Plus later this year, which currently houses the vast majority of MCU productions and the movies that were once part of Fox's X-Men franchise. The biggest likelihood is that Deadpool & Wolverine will be available on Disney's streamer around this year's holiday season, since this is typically peak time for streaming as audiences keep indoors.

Deadpool & Wolverine has generated an incredible level of hype, and will likely remain in theaters for as long as possible as it sticks the landing with critics. This is even more possible given that it will be the only MCU movie of 2024, leaving the road wide open until Captain America: Brave New World releases on February 14, 2025. With that in mind, Marvel Studios will likely want to capitalize on the box office revenue of Deadpool & Wolverine for as long as possible, possibly even relishing in the latest billion-dollar MCU movie.

When Will Deadpool & Wolverine Release On Digital , DVD & BLU-Ray?

Before Deadpool & Wolverine is available to stream with a subscription to Disney Plus, it will be available to buy/rent and download digitally via VOD services likely at a price between $15 - $20. Again, Marvel Studios has yet to confirm a date when Deadpool & Wolverine will release digitally on home media, though it will probably be around Fall 2024, and September at the earliest. This format should come with behind-the-scenes featurettes and other extra features like gag reels, though the full details of what it will contain has to be confirmed.

Where To Watch Deadpool & Wolverine Online Free Streaming?

As of now, the only way to watch Deadpool & Wolverine is to head out to a movie theater when it releases on Friday, September 8. You can find a local showing on Fandango. Otherwise, you’ll have to wait until it becomes available to rent or purchase on digital platforms like Vudu, Apple, YouTube, and Amazon or available to stream on Max. Deadpool & Wolverine is still currently in theaters if you want to experience all the film’s twists and turns in a traditional cinema. But there’s also now an option to watch the film at home. As of November 25, 2024, Deadpool & Wolverine is available on HBO Max. Only those with a subscription to the service can watch the movie. Because the film is distributed by 20th Century Studios, it’s one of the last films of the year to head to HBO Max due to a streaming deal in lieu of Disney acquiring 20th Century Studios, as Variety reports. At the end of 2024, 20th Century Studios’ films will head to Hulu or Disney+ once they leave theaters.

If there’s anything to know about me, it’s that I am a period romance connoisseur.

With the production of period romances running full speed ahead, there are too many period romance movies and TV shows out there to keep up with. How do you choose what to watch?

Don’t worry. Let me be your guide.

Here’s a list of all the best period romance and TV shows streaming right now on Netflix, Hulu and other popular sites.

Romantic period movies and TV shows on Netflix

‘anne with an e’.

“Anne with an E” is a reimagining of a classic coming-of-age story. It’s based off of the “Anne of Green Gables” series by Lucy Maud Montgomery.

In “Anne with an E,” the young, orphaned Anne is mistakenly sent to live with siblings Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert on Prince Edward Island. After suffering trauma and abuse at an orphanage, the imaginative Anne finds friendship and respite while living with the Cuthberts — while still suffering bullying and cruelty from the children and parents in her town.

“Anne with an E,” while slightly grittier than the novels, still follows the major plot points of the series. That includes showing Anne’s relationship with Gilbert Blythe, the young man with whom Anne has an intense academic rivalry. Eventually, a romance blossoms between the two.

The series was unfortunately cancelled after the third season, but it ends on a satisfactory note for Anne and Gilbert fans.

‘The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society’

“The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society,” based on the novel by Annie Barrows and Mary Ann Shaffer, tells the story of writer Juliet Ashton (Lily James), who begins a correspondence with the residents of the island of Guernsey after World War II.

During World War II, four residents of Nazi-occupied Guernsey — including Dawsey Adams (Michiel Huisman) and Elizabeth McKenna (Jessica Brown-Findlay) — tell Nazi soldiers that they are out past curfew because of their (made-up) book club, dubbed the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society on the spot, to avoid arrest. The ploy works and thus the book club is born.

Five years later, Juliet receives a letter from Dawsey, who tells her he has her personal copy of “Essays of Elia” by Charles Lamb and would like to know where he could buy another book by Lamb. The letter begins a correspondence between the two, and Juliet, curious to learn more about the book club, decides to visit their town.

When Juliet and Dawsey finally meet, sparks erupt between them, forcing Juliet to choose between her life in London and the quaint island of Guernsey.

Romantic period movies and TV shows on Prime Video

Masterpiece’s “Poldark” is a sweeping, melodramatic take on the 1975 series of the same name and the book series by Winston Graham.

The series begins with Captain Ross Poldark (Aidan Turner), a redcoat in the Revolutionary War, returning to his town of Cornwall after three years. Circumstances have drastically changed since he left: his father has died and his beloved, Elizabeth (Heida Reed), is engaged to marry his cousin Francis.

With his estate in ruins and considerable debts to pay, Ross decides to reopen Wheal Leisure, his family’s mine. He hires Demelza Carne (Eleanor Tomlinson), a poor young woman, as his scullery maid — who eventually develops feelings for him. Eventually, despite the fact that Elizabeth is married to Francis, Ross finds himself in a love triangle between Demelza and Elizabeth.

“Poldark” explores the relationship between Ross and Demelza — who (spoiler alert!) get married in the first season — and the relationship between Ross and Elizabeth throughout all five seasons.

What’s ‘Poldark’ rated and why?

Per IMDb , “Poldark” is rated TV-14 for mild sexuality, violence and profanity.

‘Downton Abbey’

It is impossible to list top period romances without including the cultural phenomenon that was “Downton Abbey.”

Taking place between 1912 and 1926, the series follows the wealthy, aristocratic Crawley family, who live in the country estate Downton Abbey, and their downstairs staff.

At the beginning of the first season, it’s revealed that the eldest Crawley daughter, Lady Mary, has agreed to marry Patrick, the son of Grantham heir James Crawley. But when both James and Patrick perish on the Titanic, the Crawleys learn that the next in line is Matthew Crawley, a middle-class lawyer.

The first two seasons hinge on Matthew and Mary: Matthew is hesitant to embrace the aristocratic lifestyle that he is newly introduced to and Mary is resistant to her romantic interest in the new heir. The will-they-won’t-they dynamic between the two makes for an interesting love story.

There are multiple other excellent romantic subplots, including one between Lady Sybil, the youngest Crawley sister, and Tom Branson, the Crawleys’ chauffeur.

‘Emma,’ (2020)

2020′s “Emma.” is, in my opinion, one of the best Jane Austen adaptations out there. It follows the titular Emma Woodhouse (Anya Taylor-Joy), a beautiful, wealthy and meddling young woman who occupies herself by matchmaking the unassuming townsfolk living in the town of Highbury.

Living with her quirky father (Bill Nighy) and often visited by their neighbor (and her brother-in-law) Mr. Knightley (Johnny Flynn), Emma has always insisted that she isn’t interested in a romance of her own. That is, until, the handsome and mysterious Frank Churchill (Callum Turner) finally comes to town.

But we all know that Emma doesn’t end up with Frank, but Mr. Knightley instead — and watching their love unfold on screen in this historical rom-com is a delight.

‘Doctor Thorne’

Written by “Downton Abbey” and “The Gilded Age” creator Julian Fellowes, “Doctor Thorne” premiered in 2016 with a whimper rather than a bang. It’s a shame — the three-part miniseries, adapted from a novel by Anthony Trollope, is an excellent period drama with an endearing love story at its center.

Taking place in a small village in England, “Doctor Thorne” follows its titular character (Tom Hollander), the doctor for his small village and uncle to Mary, his penniless niece with dubious parentage. Due to her unknown lineage, Mary is unable to marry Frank Gresham, the love of her life and the heir to the Greshambury Estate.

Despite the Gresham’s family elite standing in society, Frank’s father has amassed substantial debt, forcing Frank to marry into a wealthy family.

Masterpiece’s “Victoria” chronicles Queen Victoria’s (Jenna Coleman) reign over three seasons, focusing on the ups and downs over her first 13 years on the throne.

While each season is great, the first is my personal favorite. It follows Victoria’s bumpy accession to the throne, beginning with the death of King William IV, and it closely covers the tumultuous dynamic between Victoria, her mother and Sir John Conroy. The show also examines Victoria’s close relationship and alleged romantic affection for former prime minister Lord Melbourne (Rufus Sewell).

But most importantly, “Victoria” Season 1 explores the romance between Victoria and Prince Albert (Tom Hughes). The two were famously in love until Albert’s death in 1861, per PBS . The show’s portrayal of the pair’s early courtship and eventual marriage is sweet, making for an excellent love story.

“Belle,” which is loosely based on a true story, explores the life of Dido (Gugu Mbatha-Raw), the illegitimate and biracial daughter of Captain John Lindsay (Matthew Goode). After Dido’s mother dies, her father puts her in the care of his uncle, William Murray.

Dido is raised as a gentlewoman alongside Murray’s other great-niece, Lady Elizabeth Murray. When both girls reach adulthood, Dido’s father dies, leaving her with an enviable yearly income. Meanwhile, Elizabeth has no income.

“Belle” explores how Dido navigates society, and love, as a biracial gentlewoman. Plus, there’s an excellent love story between Dido and John Davinier, a law student.

“Brooklyn” tells the story of Eilis Lacey (Saoirse Ronan), a young Irish woman. Dissatisfied with her life in Ireland, she immigrates to New York City in 1951 and finds lodging in a boarding house for young Irish women. Eilis begins working in a department store, but is severely homesick.

Father Flood, an Irish priest who helped Eilis come to the United States, enrolls her in a night school bookkeeping class. Things continue to improve when Eilis meets Tony, a young Italian-American plumber, at a dance. Their romance flourishes, but is stopped short when Eilis must return to Ireland after a tragedy in her family.

Torn between her newfound life and love in New York City and the comforting life at home in Ireland, Eilis must choose between the two countries and the two, very different lives she could lead.

“Brooklyn” is, at first glance, a simple coming-of-age story. But it proves to have humor and depth, and an excellent love story at its center.

‘The Gilded Age’

“The Gilded Age” follows New York City’s elite society in 1882, both old money and new. When Marian Brook’s father dies, she moves to New York City to live with her Aunt Agnes of the wealthy van Rhijn family, and her sister Ada, a spinster.

Around the same time, the Russells move in across the street. They’re a wealthy, but new money, family.

Bertha Russell is determined to gain the favor of New York’s elite families, but it’s proving harder than expected: As a new money family, they’re looked down upon, despite their wealth.

“The Gilded Age,” created by Fellowes, is full of elaborate sets and costumes, melodrama and incredible hats. It also has a few interesting and, in true Fellowes style, twisty romantic plot lines.

The most interesting one is between Marian and Larry Russell, Bertha’s son — but because their love story only came to fruition at the end of Season 2, we’ll have to wait until Season 3 to see how it shakes out.

‘Far From the Madding Crowd’ (2015)

In 1870s England, Bathsheba Everdene (Carey Mulligan) meets farmer Gabriel Oak (Matthias Schoenaerts). The two become friends and Gabriel eventually proposes — but Bathsheba, saying she is too independent, turns him down.

After falling to misfortune, Gabriel is forced to look for employment elsewhere. He eventually finds himself on Weatherby farm, inherited and owned by Bathsheba. Thus begins Gabriel and Bathsheba’s intertwined lives.

Bathsheba, beautiful and headstrong, finds herself catching the eye of multiple suitors — and Gabriel, now working as a shepherd on Bathsheba’s farm, must watch and advise from the sidelines.

“Far From the Madding Crowd” is a beautiful period romance about fate, love and timing, with an excellent cast.

“Sanditon,” based on Jane Austen’s last, unfinished novel, follows the young Charlotte Heywood (Rose Williams). After a chance encounter, Charlotte goes to Sanditon, a quaint seaside town, with the Parker family.

There, she meets a myriad of quirky townsfolk and is swept up in their schemes. Her new friends include Tom Parker, who is keen on making Sanditon a renowned seaside resort; Lady Denham, a wealthy widow; Sir Edward and Lady Esther Denham, step-siblings vying for Lady Denham’s wealth.

Charlotte also meets Sidney Parker (Theo James), Tom’s handsome, brooding brother. Because Austen never finished the novel, “Sanditon” has quite a few gaps to fill in — but does a great job fleshing out the romance between Sidney and Charlotte.

In my humble opinion, the first season of “Sanditon” is the best in the series (out of three seasons total) — but the ending will likely leave fans frustrated. This is largely because (spoiler alert!) James left the show after Season 1, and doesn’t return.

‘The Buccaneers’

Apple TV+’s “The Buccaneers” is the second stab at an adaptation of Edith Wharton’s unfinished novel of the same name. The series (and novel) follows the five daughters of three new-money families during the Gilded Age: sisters Nan and Jinny St. George; Conchita Closson; and sisters Lizzy and Mabel Elmsworth.

The story focuses on Nan, but it explores the lives of all the friends as they travel to England to find aristocratic husbands. Their prospective husbands have titles, but they are managing estates with significant debt. That’s why the five girls, dubbed the buccaneers, are sought after in British society — while simultaneously looked down upon for their American manners.

The Apple TV+ series is, as the Deseret News previously reported, a “modernized, more feminist take on the book. The characters mostly use modern language and express modern ideas.” It makes for a breezy watch — and seeing the love triangle play out between Nan, Guy and Theo is good fun.

‘pride and prejudice’ (1995).

Regardless of which adaptation of “Pride and Prejudice” you favor — 1995 or 2005? — we can all agree that the 1995 BBC miniseries is a great watch.

“Pride and Prejudice” follows the Bennet sisters as they navigate Regency Era society, including their love lives. The story focuses on Elizabeth Bennet (Jennifer Ehle) and her romance with Mr. Darcy (Colin Firth), whom she initially can’t stand.

It’s a classic love story and the BBC miniseries takes its time telling it with an incredible cast. Plus, who can forget the infamous scene in which Mr. Darcy emerges from a lake, sopping wet?

‘Jane Eyre’ (2006)

The 2006 “Jane Eyre” BBC miniseries is likely the most book-accurate adaptation out there. The four-part miniseries, based off of the Charlotte Brontë of novel the same name, follows Jane Eyre, a young girl with a traumatizing past.

After being raised by her cruel aunt and being sent off to a strict boarding school, Jane leaves to work as a governess at Thornfield Hall. There, she meets Edward Rochester, the master of the estate and guardian of Adele, Jane’s pupil.

As Jane continues to work at Thornfield Hall, she develops romantic feelings for Mr. Rochester — and eventually discovers that not everything is as it seems.

‘Daniel Deronda’

“Daniel Deronda,” based on the novel by George Eliot, follows the titular character (played by Hugh Dancy). Daniel is a wealthy young man with a mysterious past, caught between two women: Gwendolen (Romola Garai), a beautiful, proud member of the aristocracy who has financial troubles, and Mirah (Jodhi May), a young Jewish singer.

Daniel finds himself helping both young women while trying to uncover his own past — he was raised by the wealthy Sir Hugo Mallinger, but doesn’t know who his parents are. Gwendolen, on the other hand, is pressured to find a wealthy husband to save her family for financial ruin.

She eventually crosses paths with Henleigh Mallinger Grandcourt, a wealthy but cruel man who could provide for her family.

‘Sense and Sensibility’ (2008)

The 2008 three-episode “Sense and Sensibility” BBC miniseries is a great adaptation of Austen’s novel. After their father dies, sisters Elinor and Marianne, along with their mother Mrs. Dashwood and younger sister Margaret, must leave their large and comfortable home for a much smaller country house.

They find themselves getting caught up in the lives of the local folk. Marianne falls for John Willoughby (Dominic Cooper), a passionate and rakish young man, while catching the eye of Colonel Brandon, an older and kind man, and a friend of Sir John Middleton’s, Mrs. Dashwood’s cousin.

Elinor, on the other hand, begins to fall for Edward Ferrars (Dan Stevens), the brother of Fanny, Elinor’s half-brother’s greedy wife. But in true Austen form, the path to true love for Elinor and Marianne proves to be complicated.
