Warp into Star Trek Day 2023 today with new animated 'very Short Treks'
The five retro-styled 'Star Trek' advertising shorts arrive starting Sept. 8, 2023
This year marks the 50th anniversary of the underrated "Star Trek: The Animated Series," which launched back in 1973 on NBC for just two seasons as a sophisticated Saturday morning cartoon with serious storytelling onboard courtesy of executive producers Gene Roddenberry and "The Original Series" writer D.C. Fontana.
To fortify CBS Studios and Paramount's official "Star Trek" Day 2023 celebrations on Friday, Sept. 8, "Trek" fans will have one more reason to cheer as the studio honors "50 Years of Star Trek Animation" with newly-minted "Star Trek: very Short Treks."
The first of these five retro-styled animated promotional spots blasts off this week for the global salute to the premiere of " Star Trek " on Sept. 8, 1966, alongside previously announced special events, as well as the first chapter of a new digital comic book series titled, "Star Trek: The Animated Celebration Presents The Scheimer Barrier."

Here's the detailed description:
"The 'very Short Treks' will feature previously announced fan-favorite characters voiced by cast members from across the 'Star Trek' universe, including icons Jonathan Frakes as Will Riker, Doug Jones as Saru and Armin Shimerman as Quark, and a new line-up of exciting voices, including Ethan Peck as Spock, Gates McFadden as Dr. Beverly Crusher, Celia Rose Gooding as Uhura, Connor Trinneer as Trip Tucker, Bruce Horak as Hemmer, Noël Wells as Tendi and George Takei as Sulu."
Creative consultant Casper Kelly came up with the marketing idea for "Star Trek: very Short Treks." Kelly is mostly recognized for the viral online hit "Too Many Cooks," his involvement for the "Discovery"-era shorts, "Star Trek: Short Treks," and his work with Cartoon Network's Adult Swim.

Star Trek Day: how to watch, best panels and everything we know
The biggest day in the Star Trek calendar explained
Star Trek Day is happening today, on September 8, 2021. No matter where you are, you can livestream this digital event for free – and learn a ton about the future of the Star Trek universe in doing so. The date was picked because it's been 55 years since Star Trek: The Original Series first hit TV screens with 'The Man Trap'. The event will be hosted by Wil Wheaton and Mica Burton.
Star Trek Day promises announcements, and we're hoping to see new trailers for Star Trek Picard season 2 , Star Trek Discovery season 4 and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds , along with much more on the animated show Prodigy. Classic Trek stars will participate in the panels across the day, too, including George Takei, LeVar Burton and Cirroc Lofton.
On this page, we'll give you a breakdown of how to watch Star Trek Day, which panels you must see and anything else you might want to keep in mind ahead of the event.

When is Star Trek Day? What time does it start?
The Star Trek Day livestream begins at 8.30PM EDT / 5.30PM PDT / 4.30AM BST / 1.30PM AEST on Wednesday, September 8 (or September 9, if you're in the UK or Australia). If you're watching from Australia or North America, you can enjoy this live at a sensible hour – if you're based in the UK, the timing is pretty rough, but you'll be able to catch up on the key announcements when you wake up.
How to watch Star Trek Day
If you want to watch Star Trek Day live, it's being broadcast worldwide on StarTrek.com on this page – likely through the site's own video player. You won't be able to watch it live on YouTube , but US viewers can watch it on the Paramount Plus service live, and it'll also be broadcast on Paramount Plus's Twitch channel .
After the livestream, the panels will be available to watch individually on the Paramount Plus YouTube channel .
Star Trek Day panels: the ones you shouldn't miss
Here's a quick breakdown of all the Star Trek Day panels in handy list form – note that the times below are Pacific, and that the whole thing lasts for close to three hours.

- Star Trek: Picard (with cast and crew – including Patrick Stewart): 7.55PM
It probably goes without saying, but the panels you won't want to miss here will be Prodigy, Discovery, Strange New Worlds and Picard – and maybe Lower Decks, if the animated comedy series is your sort of thing.
The Prodigy panel will dive into what that new kid-friendly CG Trek series is about. The Discovery panel, meanwhile, is focused on the upcoming season, which is due to launch this year. That means we're likely to find out the release dates for both, and see a trailer for each.
We'd expect a trailer at least for both Picard and Strange New Worlds. These panels are among the most stacked when it comes to cast appearances, too – Patrick Stewart, Jeri Ryan and Isa Briones will each appear to discuss the upcoming second season, which features the return of John de Lancie's Q.
Meanwhile, Strange New World's three leads – Ethan Peck (Spock), Anson Mount (Pike) and Number One (Rebecca Romijn) – will all be appearing on that panel. Considering this show promises to resemble more classic episodic Trek adventures, fans will definitely want to keep an eye on that one.
While Picard season 2 has already been confirmed for 2022, perhaps we'll learn more about when Strange New Worlds will land in that panel. The Discovery spin-off wrapped up the first round of filming in July.
Your mileage may vary on the rest, depending on your appetite for Trek nostalgia – but the running time is pretty lean, considering how much they're packing in. Star Trek Day sounds like a worthwhile event for Paramount Plus's growing universe of shows set in this universe.

Ha, “Federation Square” in Melbourne. I admit to thinking of Star Trek when I visited Melbourne a few years ago. Had a kangaroo steak at an excellent restaurant on the Square.
Er, I think you’ve misread the time. The official announcement says “12:00 pm PT/3:00 pm ET,” meaning that it starts at noon Pacific time and 3 p.m. Eastern time. It’s only supposed to last for two hours, though, so it’s not supposed to go until 3:00 p.m. Pacific time.
Sounds like fun!
I guess this will be a yearly thing now which will be great to celebrate Star Trek in all its glory. I really loved last years event and expect to get a few trailers and other surprises.
My only pet peeve is how do you have the Picard panel and yet not have a single TNG cast member as part of the event, including Patrick Stewart himself? At comic con it was at least him and Gates McFadden but I thought the entire gang would be here for this and would easily be the biggest panel of the event. Oh well!
But happy Kate Mulgrew will be there (IIRC wasn’t there at last year’s event) and good to know there will be a Nichelle Nichols tribute!
Trek XIV panel. with Pine, Shatner, Stewart, Bana, Hemsworth, Eve, Cranston
Maybe in a mirror universe somewhere….
This is the mirror universe
Interesting, I never figured the Empire would be so….bland.
That would explain a lot.
Wish there were some news they could share about the movie. Everything is moving except this and maybe Section 31 show.
You would think a movie that is suppose to be filming ‘end of this year’ would, you know, make Star Trek day a big announcement event about it with things like maybe a title, 1 or 2 of the cast members there to hype it and remind people who they are again, when and where it will start shooting (which would have to be VERY soon i they want to keep thee 2023 deadline), maybe big casting news of who is playing the obligatory ubervillain etc, etc, etc.
Instead, more dead silence per usual. We have not heard anything. NOTHING! No casting rumors, update about the script, confirmation if the entire old cast signed up, possibility of location shoots, director or writer throwing out story hints, budget figures, etc. But there is NONE of that for a movie that is suppose to be out 16 months from now. It’s like they forgotten about it because there seems to be zero movement.
Paramount just seems at a loss where the film franchise is going and maybe there is still hope they will get this thing going soon. But if this one is forever stalled too as the others, I don’t think it will shock anyone at this point.
There isn’t going to be a movie. Atleast not in 2023 or 2024.
That’s what I was alluding to obviously, at least not in 2023. There is still a possibility for 2024 but even then the clock is ticking if you want to position your movie for a certain week as those are getting filled in by other studios now. So if 2023 is really a wash, seem like they should just face reality and make a new date sooner than later.
But maybe t’s smart to just push it off to 2025 if they want to start anew and a different direction if whatever is stalling them on this movie can’t get worked out. At this point, it really doesn’t matter lol.
2023 is seven years between features, nine for a 2025 release. It does open the possibility that by staying in the Kelvin universe, there’s opportunity to explore the Trek universe in a way different from the TOS movies. Stay tuned….
I’m not saying that will happen obviously but maybe it should? But something that STICKS this time and not just keep moving or quietly cancel it like all the other projects.
Again at this point, really, what does it matter? Once we reached the 5 year mark and you still care about these movies, then you will probably care in another 3-5 years as well. And why wait 7 years just to rush something to production now?? Because if they tried to release something for 2023 now, it’s going to feel rushed.
You know my thoughts, I think they are taking a huge chance on any movie right now and they probably feel the exact same way. But maybe if they wait it out for a few more years, the TV shows will feel a bit more mundane by then, maybe people will be generally excited for another movie in the fanbase; because at the moment it still doesn’t feel that way at all to me. Sure many will see it, but there isn’t any excitement or anticipation about them anymore and that must worry Paramount.
And yeah you can maybe do something drastically different in the Kelvin universe by then too. Something that separates it from the Prime universe that will get people to get excited for it again. Right now, the Kelvin universe just feels so far in the background now that the Prime universe is back with all the legacy characters fans have missed.
But whose fault is that? ;)
i think that the movie has been shelved and paramount just does not want to lose fans over constantly being jerked around with false hope. Frankly I am not the fan that i once was. i don’t like the TV Star Trek that is on today. I personally did like the Kelvin films and would like to see another but my interest is definitely waning with all of their rhetoric and then silence. Fans deserve better.
Definitely a possibility. I still want to be more optimistic and that they are trying to figure something out, but 2+2 is just not adding up here. On one hand the argument (or spin) is that nothing is happening because they are trying to clear the actors schedules before they announce a starting date. OK, fine. But then the actors themselves, at least Pine, Quinto and Urban have said they have heard nothing, ie, no one has called them to even work out any scheduling or anything. Kind of weird when you made it adamant you wanted a new movie by next year.
But I agree with you, fans do deserve better. And really sorry you’re not enjoying any of the new shows. For me, Star Trek really belongs on TV versus the cinema, but there was a time we had both of them running together, at least from 1989 through 2002. I would love to see that time again.
But man how does this discussion keep being brought up lol. This thread has nothing to do with the Kelvin movies, but then I guess that’s the sad point. It’s about Star Trek day, the new films SHOULD be a part of that like all the shows are but once again completely ignored. It’s funny a decade ago some fans actually thought the Kelvin universe would be driving force of the franchise from here on out and the Prime universe would be part of a bygone era. Today its all about the Prime universe again and the Kelvin is lucky it can just get a shout out by someone at an anniversary event. ;)
No movie yet, so no news. It is what it is.
Unfortunately, we don’t get news on this movie any more than we get news on the Section 31 show :(
Those annual events for Star Trek Day and First Contact Day are a true gift.
I wish they will someday release streaming movies twice a year, on those two days… Trekbusters on P+
Yes and let’s start the first film with the NX-01 Enterprise crew during the Romulan war! That would certainly get my attention!
Five second delay on those panels, I’m guessing….
“Paramount is doing a streaming event honoring the anniversary of the launch of the original Star Trek television series on September 8, 1966.”
That should be noted as “in the US”.
Star Trek actually had its television premiere on Sep 6. For at least the first season, it aired 2 days earlier on CTV in Canada.
Hoping to get at least some updates on Section 31 🤞
Star Trek Day Is Coming! Here Are The Details For This Year's Celebration
Ah, September: the month when the leaves start changing, students head back to school, and the world celebrates the anniversary of one of the most beloved franchises of all time. Star Trek Day is once again almost upon us, and this year's celebration includes a TV special, a prime-time re-airing of the newest "Trek" classic, and free theatrical screenings of select "Star Trek: Lower Decks" episodes.
September 8, 2023 marks the 50th anniversary of "Star Trek: The Animated Series," a strange and sometimes silly saga that ushered in a new era of creativity for the then-still-young franchise. In honor of animated Trek's semicentennial, this year's Star Trek Day will have a special focus on the animation aspect of the long-running Paramount franchise. "Star Trek: Lower Decks" castmate Jerry O'Connell is set to host a special "salute to the franchise" that will include a look back at decades of "Star Trek" animation and a look forward to "Star Trek: Lower Decks" season 4.
The franchise is celebrating 50 years of animation
Meanwhile, in select cities across the US, UK, and Canada, fans can RSVP to "Star Trek: The Animated Celebration," an event screening of 4 "Lower Decks" episodes. The event also includes giveaways, free concessions, and other perks and surprises. Trek animation fans may also want to stop by the official "Star Trek" merch shop, where there will be collections curated for Star Trek Day and "Star Trek: TAS" specifically, and everyone can get 25% off with the code STARTREKDAY.
For those who can't make it to theaters, there are still ways to celebrate "Star Trek" from home: CBS is set to air the first two season 1 episodes of "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" in a special back-to-back presentation, so you can show your grandma who never cut cable that endearing scene where the Enterprise crew sings to a planet to make it rain. In all seriousness, though, Star Trek Day is a great opportunity for international fans, as I know plenty of Trekkies who have been frustrated by the way Paramount+ is not accessible in their region. The Star Trek Day special will actually be available free worldwide on Youtube, Twitch, Facebook, and a special website dedicated to the holiday, plus on Paramount+ and other streamers and channels in the U.S.
Here's how to get in on the fun
In addition to celebrating Trek animation, O'Connell's special will revisit memorable moments in Trek history and bid farewell to the first of the Paramount+ era Trek shows, "Star Trek: Discovery," which will end after its upcoming 5th season. The attendance information for Star Trek Day events varies depending on your location, so make sure to check out the details below so you don't miss a thing.
You can register to attend a free "Star Trek: Lower Decks" showing in Columbus, Dallas, Denver, Philadelphia, Phoenix, San Diego, St. Louis, Washington D.C., Vancouver, Calgary, or London via this link beginning August 24, 2023 at 9 am PT.
You can watch the Star Trek Day special in America via Paramount+, PlutoTV, Mixable, Comedy Central, Paramount Network, Pop TV, Fave TV, select CBS affiliates, and even on the Smithsonian website. Global fans can watch free at StarTrek.com/Day, or via YouTube, Twitch, or Facebook.
Finally, you can catch the first two episodes of "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" on CBS at 8 pm ET/PT.

Star Trek Day
On September 8th every year, Star Trek enthusiasts celebrate Star Trek Day marking the anniversary of the original series which released on this date in 1966 in the United States.
Gene Roddenberry who created this show introduced audiences to a completely different universe where unique and various species coexist and explore the cosmos together.
This day celebrates the franchise's lasting impact on science fiction, pop culture and the imaginations of millions of people across the globe.
The Origin And History of Star Trek
The birth of a sci-fi phenomenon (1965–1969).
One of the most influential science fiction franchises of all time was created by Gene Roddenberry who also produced and wrote with a vision of a utopian future.
Roddenberry pitched a new television series to Desilu Productions that described as “A Wagon Train to The Stars”.
The head of Desilu, Lucille Ball, played a crucial role in approving the project. After a few modifications and development, NBC agreed to produce a pilot episode “The Cage” . It starred Jeffrey Hunter as Captain Christopher Pike of the Starship Enterprise.
Although this first pilot was rejected by NBC, they were captivated enough by the concept to commission a second pilot, “Where No Man Has Gone Before” . This pilot featured William Shatner as Captain James T. Kirk and Leonard Nimoy as Commander Spock.
The series debuted in 1966 and quickly became known for its exploration of complex social issues and its diverse cast. Irrespective of its innovative approach, the show's rating had a drastic decline by the end of the first season.
NBC threatened to cancel during the second season. However, things took a turn when a passionate fan-led letter writing campaign, led by Bjo Trimble, convinced the network to renew the series.
Even though the series continued, it was moved to the far less popular “Friday night death slot” and the budget was significantly cut down.
Gene Roddenberry, frustrated with these changes, stepped back from his role as producer, leading to Fred Freiberger taking over for the third and final season.
After 79 episodes, NBC canceled the series in 1969.
The Rise of a Cult Following (1969–1991)
After the show got canceled, Star Trek entered syndication where a new and growing audience was found.
By the late 2970s, Star Trek aired over 150 domestic and 60 international markets and its popularity skyrocketed.
The first Star Trek convention was held in 1972 in New York City, and it was expected to be attended by only a few hundred fans. However, to everyone's surprise, thousands of fans solidified the show's status as a cult phenomenon.
This increased interest led to the creation of Star Trek: The Animated Series in 1973 in which the original cast voiced their characters. Although the moment was short-lived, it eventually led to the franchise receiving its first Emmy Award.
Paramount and Roddenberry then started developing a new series, Star Trek: Phase II. However, the project was shelved due to a feature film following the success of Star Wars and Close Encounters of the Third Kind.
This led to Star Trek: The Motion Picture which was released in 1979 and even though it received mixed reviews, its box office success paved the way for a new series of sequels.
The franchise was revived with the release of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan in 1982. This led to a total of six films featuring the cast of the original series cast.
In 1987, Paramount launched Star Trek: The Next Generation (TNG), set a century after the original series. The popularity of TNG grew so much that it eventually surpassed the original series in viewership and spawning its own set of films.
Expanding the Universe
After the death of Gene Roddenberry in 1991, executive producer Rick Berman took over the franchise. In 1994, Star Trek: The Next Generation concluded, but it was so successful that it led to the creation of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1993) and Star Trek: Voyager (1995).
Both the series had a run for seven seasons, with Voyager becoming the highest-rated show of the newly launched United Paramount Network (UPN).
A prequel to the original series, Star Trek: Enterprise premiered a prequel to the original series in 2001. However, it struggled with ratings and the show was eventually canceled in 2005 after four seasons.
This marked the conclusion of an uninterrupted 18-year run of Star Trek television programming.
The Kelvin Timeline and Beyond (2009–Present)
After a short break, Star Trek was relaunched for the big screen in 2009 by director J.J. Abrams. This new film was simply titled Star Trek, and it introduced a new cast playing the original series characters but set in an alternate timeline. It enabled for a fresh storytelling and at the same time preserved the original legacy.
The film was a commercial as well as a cultural success that led to two sequels: Star Trek Into Darkness (2013) and Star Trek Beyond (2016).
The premiere of Star Trek: Discovery in 2017 marked the return of Star Trek to television, launching CBS's streaming service, CBS All Access (now Paramount+).
This series marked the beginning of a new era for the franchise along with Star Trek: Picard (2020) and animated series like Star Trek: Lower Decks (2020) and Star Trek: Prodigy (2021).
The “Star Trek Universe” keeps expanding with several series running at the same time and new projects in the works, ensuring Star Trek stays a lively and evolving part of popular culture.

Star Trek Day ’21 celebrates 55 years of Kirk and beyond with livestreamed event
On September 8, 1966, The Man Trap — the first broadcast episode of Star Trek: The Original Series — aired on NBC starring William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, DeForest Kelley, and other faces that would soon become familiar to millions of fans as the iconic crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise . To celebrate the 55th anniversary, Paramount+ has just announced details for the Second Annual Star Trek Day, which will pay tribute to not only that milestone, but all that’s come since — and everything that’s on its way.
- Roddenberry’s legacy
How to watch Star Trek Day
Per a Paramount+ press release , Star Trek Day will be a free livestreamed event held at 5:30 p.m. PT on Wednesday, September 8, and broadcast from the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles. Star Trek Day will be hosted by Star Trek: The Next Generation alum Wil Wheaton and actress Mica Burton ( Critical Role ) , daughter of Wheaton’s co-star LeVar Burton. The event will include music from a live orchestra helmed by Jeff Russo, who composed the themes for both Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Picard .
Most of the event will consist of panels either about current and upcoming Star Trek series, or “legacy moments” that will focus on stories of past series be recounted by a member of each show’s cast.
Voice actors Noël Wells and Eugene Cordero will be there for the Star Trek: Lower Decks panel. Discovery ‘s panel features Wilson Cruz, Blu del Barrio, and Ian Alexander. Patrick Stewart and Jeri Ryan will be in attendance for the Picard panel, while fellow cast member Isa Briones will sing “Blue Skies” — the tune Data (Brent Spiner) sings in 2002’s Star Trek: Nemesis and is featured prominently in Picard ‘s first season.
The panels for both Discovery and Picard will hopefully give us insight into each series’ upcoming seasons. A teaser for Season 4 of Discovery — due out sometime this year — was released in April and focused on a massive gravitational anomaly threatening the galaxy. Meanwhile, we’ve gotten a couple of teasers for Season 2 of Picard , the latest of which features the return of John de Lancie in the role of the mischievous and seemingly all-powerful Q. We’ve also known since the day before the Picard series premiere in January 2020 that Whoopi Goldberg will be reprising the role of Guinan for the upcoming season, set for release next year.
For the upcoming series’ panels, expect to see Anson Mount, Rebecca Romijn, and Ethan Peck discussing Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and voice actors Brett Gray and Dee Bradley Baker talking about the new animated kids’ show Star Trek: Prodigy .
On hand to bring us behind-the-scenes details from back in the day will be George Takei from Star Trek: The Original Series , Burton from Star Trek: The Next Generation , Cirroc Lofton from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine , Garrett Wang from Star Trek: Voyager , and Anthony Montgomery from Star Trek: Enterprise .
Roddenberry’s legacy
There will also be a “Roddenberry Legacy” panel to discuss arguably the most relevant legacy: That of late Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry, who would have just turned 100. His son. Rod Roddenberry. will be on hand. along with Gates McFadden, most notably of Next Generation fame, Burton, and Takei.
One subject sure to be brought up at the Roddenberry Legacy panel is the announcement earlier this month, per Variety , of the Roddenberry estate’s deal with tech company OTOY to create a digital archive that will include the production of NFTs and a public installation of a lifesize (as in 1:1 scale) holographic model of the original U.S.S. Enterprise featured in Star Trek: The Original Series.
Star Trek fans interested in tuning in have a few options. The event will be broadcast live on StarTrek.com’s Star Trek Day page , on Paramount+’s streaming service , and on the Paramount+ Twitch page . If you can’t watch it live, the recorded panels will be available on demand on Paramount+ and on the Paramount+ YouTube channel .
