Welcome to the cape cod tour.

Explore all that Cape Cod offers, from quintessential lighthouses to sandy beaches, with this self-guided driving tour! As you drive on your Cape Cod scenic tour, see and learn about the Cape’s maritime traditions, Pilgrim and tribal history, and miles of beautiful beaches. The tour begins at the Cape Cod Visitor Center in Barnstable and ends at the historic Pilgrim First Landing Park in Provincetown. Along the way, you’ll visit Nauset Lighthouse (the unofficial icon of the Cape), First Encounter Beach (which the Pilgrims explored), Marconi Station (site of transatlantic cables), and more!

About the Tour

The tour begins at the Cape Cod Visitor Center and cruises east through historic Massachusetts towns. Along the way, our narrator will introduce you to the Nauset tribe, who fished and farmed here for thousands of years. Learn about their customs and legends, like the tale of the princess who kept a fish alive with her tears. And hear about their wariness when they spotted mysterious ships approaching from the horizon.

Continue to Eastham and trek down to First Encounter Beach, where you’ll hear a detailed account of the battle which broke out between the Pilgrims and the Nausets when the two first met, and later, their first peaceful negotiation. You won’t want to miss this historical, dramatic sequence of events!

And what’s more New England than lighthouses? As you drive, we’ll point out Cape Cod’s prettiest, loneliest lighthouses, all of which make for perfect photo ops. Learn the importance of these iconic buildings, and hear the harrowing tale that earned the Cape the nickname “ocean graveyard” before the lighthouses were built.

This tour is also full of optional detours, like the Audubon Wildlife Sanctuary. This is a can’t-miss stop for nature enthusiasts and bird watchers, featuring five miles of hiking trails.

Finally, arrive in Provincetown, a thriving epicenter of arts and culture. This colorful, vibrant community is about as far from the dour Pilgrims as you can get! Check out the art galleries, boutiques, theatres, and embrace the bohemian culture!

The Cape Cod Scenic tour ends at the northern tip of the Cape, where it all began for the Pilgrims. Our final stop will show you the exact spot where the Mayflower first struck land. Not only is this place historical, but it’s also almost impossibly beautiful!

Soak up all the history, beauty, and culture of Cape Cod in one comprehensive tour. All without having to fuss with a map or adhere to someone else’s schedule! As you drive, audio stories will automatically pop up and start playing, allowing you to keep your attention on the beauty and history of Cape Cod and Provincetown.

Cape Cod’s Best Self-Guided Tours

When your wanderlust leads you to our destination, you’ll want to know where to find Cape Cod’s best self-guided tours. With so much to see and do on this tiny spit of sand, getting out and exploring it in-depth requires a little guidance. It just so happens that we have a bit of wanderlust as well. So, whenever we have a few hours to do some exploring of our own, off we go.

We’re always in search of new and exciting sightseeing choices to share with guests of our bed and breakfast on Cape Cod. So, our “go-to” list of options grows every year. Whether you’re a history buff, adventure-seeker, or craft brew guru, Cape Cod offers a long list of possibilities. So let’s take a look at all of the ways to get out and about on a self-guided tour of Cape Cod.

The Lure of the Lighthouse

Lobster and lighthouses are a big draw for most visitors to Cape Cod. And we don’t lack variety when it comes to either. With 18 beacons guiding sailors around the treacherous shoals off Cape Cod, each tower features a unique shape and signal. While a few are open for tours in season, several others are located on private property and may only be spotted from the water. Read our recent blogs for tips and tricks to locate them all.

  • Mapping a Cape Cod Lighthouse Tour

Thar She Blows

Whales frequent the waters off Cape Cod most months of the year. But the best time to see them feasting and frolicking along Stellwagen Bank is mid-April through mid-October. Two tour operators offer excursions to spot whales, each boasting an onboard naturalist to enlighten you about whale behavior patterns. Hop aboard for a 3 ½- to a 4-hour trip to be spellbound as you watch them breach and wave their tails. For what to wear and how to prepare, read our “ What to Know Before You Go ” whale watching blog.

Two-Wheel Touring

According to John F. Kennedy, “nothing compares to the simple pleasure of a bike ride.” And, as a long-term visitor to Cape Cod, he knows of what he speaks. Several bike paths traverse the diverse terrain of the Cape. Cycle through cranberry bogs and marshes, along beaches, and next to the Cape Cod Canal. Challenge your skills in the dunes of the Cape Cod National Seashore and through the wooded paths in Nickerson State Park. To pick the perfect route for your cycling expedition, read our blog “ Your Guide to Cape Cod Bike Paths .”

Take the Road Less Traveled

The diversity of hiking trails that traverse the landscape of Cape Cod is truly inspiring. Stroll along a peaceful boardwalk across marshland and sand dunes or take to the woods for an off-the-beaten-path adventure. From Sandwich to Provincetown, clearly marked trails offering gentle hikes or more challenging treks to epic vistas, Cape Cod is a dream come true for walkers or hikers of any ability.

Winery and Brewery Tours

A tip of the hat to all the craft brewers and winemakers that call Cape Cod home. Sip and swirl your way through 3 great wineries or hoist a mug of ice-cold brew at 5 craft breweries . Designate a driver, then meander the length and breadth of the Cape sampling the exceptional creations of our local vintners and brewers.

Historic Homes and Cultural Meccas

Having played a vital role in American history, it’s no wonder that our hearty ancestors strived to maintain and preserve several historical sites of interest . Historic homes, cultural centers, sanctuaries, monuments, and statues dot the landscape of Cape Cod. And the collection of museums here honors everything from pirates to presidents.

So the next time you’re motivated to take a magical mystery tour of our beloved Cape Cod, be sure to book a room at the Captain Farris House in the historic village of Bass River. We’re in the heart of it all and can lead you to Cape Cod’s best self-guided tours in every season.

A LOCAL’S GUIDE TO CAPE COD, MASSACHUSETTS

This post may contain affiliate links. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. We may receive a small commission when you make a purchase using our link.

Cape Cod is a peninsula extending into the Atlantic Ocean from southeastern Massachusetts in the northeastern United States. Cape Cod has changed so much over the last decade. What was once a quaint and quiet peninsula is now a summer vacation spot for thousands of people. Cape Cod consists of 15 towns, Barnstable being the largest.

The Cape is home to 220,000 people year-round, but that number triples to around 600,000 residents during the summer. During the winters, the Cape becomes a complete ghost town, leaving retirees and very few families.

Here’s our ultimate local guide to Cape Cod, Massachusetts, with all the tips to plan an unforgettable getaway!

Things To Do In Cape Cod

With 15 towns, over 600 miles of coastline, and over 100 beaches, it’s easy to see why this is a popular summer destination for people from all over the United States and worldwide. If beaches aren’t your thing, there are plenty more things to see and do in the area.

Here are the top things I like to see and do in Cape Cod:

1) Explore Downtown Chatham

Full of unique stores and great food, downtown Chatham has something for everyone. Some of my favorite stores in downtown Chatham are Mahi Gold, The Fisherman’s Daughter, and The Black Dog. Downtown Chatham also has lively nightlife; check out Chatham Squire restaurant and entertainment venue for a great night out.

Downtown Chatham is also perfect for an overcast day on the Cape; a great place to visit is The Chatham Orpheum Theater.

2) Relax On The Beach

You can’t go to Cape Cod without going to the beach. The beaches I recommend visiting on Cape are:

Cohoon Hollow

Located in Wellfleet, Cohoon Hollow is home to the famous Beachcomber with live music, delicious sandwiches and summer cocktails. The beach is also great for surfing, boogie boarding, or hanging out with friends.

Mayflower Beach

Located in Dennis, Mayflower Beach is perfect for families with children. The Mayflower Beach is on the bayside of Cape Cod and the water is much warmer and more transparent than the open ocean on the outer Cape. You can walk far out in the shallow water here, especially at low tide.

Herring Cove Beach

Located in Provincetown, Herring Cove Beach has calm waters and a peaceful environment. Watching the sunset at Herring Cove is a great way to spend an evening. Many people love to have a picnic and admire the sparkling sea.

South Cape Beach

Located in Mashpee, South Cape Beach is known for having pristine white sand beaches and a light crowd. South Cape has a view of Martha’s Vineyard and a ton of hiking trails right near the beach.

3) Have A Round Of Mini Golf

There is mini golf on every corner of the Cape. Mini golf is fun, easy to find, and inexpensive and children will love the pirate and whale themes. Some of my favorite places to play mini-golf are The Weatherdeck in Harwich and Pirates Cove in Yarmouth.

4) Explore and Walk Around Provincetown

Provincetown (also known as P-town) is unique and different from the rest of the Cape. P-town is all about the LGBTQ community, with rainbow flags lining the streets and unique art all over town. P-town is about being a part of community and acceptance; it’s so wonderful to see.

Many shops and restaurants are along Commercial Street, with lots going on around the area. Ensure you appreciate the unique environment you can’t find anywhere else in the US.

5) Walk Along The Cape Cod Rail Trail

The  Cape Cod Rail Trail is a 25-mile trail that runs through six of the Cape’s towns. A section of the Rail Trail goes around Cliff Pond in Brewster, so wear a bathing suit and stop for a dip. If you don’t have a bike, there are plenty of places you can rent a bike from. If you are not into biking, this is a great trail to walk or run on.

6) Go Kayaking

Kayaking is my favorite pastime on the Cape, but I avoided kayaking in the ocean. You need to know the waves and currents if you decide to kayak in the open ocean.

Kayaking in rivers and lakes is much safer, especially with children and Bass River and Herring River are great kayaking spots. You can rent a kayak from many places in the area.

7) Explore Downtown Wellfleet

Downtown Wellfleet has funky shops, galleries and restaurants. My favorites are Aim Thrift Shop, Herridge Books, Sickday Surf and Skate and Mac’s Seafood on the Beach.

Be sure to check out the Wellfleet Flea market, which is enormous. Here, you will find some junk, but you will also find some diamonds in the rough for super cheap. Even if you are not looking to buy anything, exploring the flea market is worth it.

8) Have A Go At Surfing On Nauset Beach

Nauset is a great surfing beach on the Cape. The waves are massive and are so fun to swim and surf in. You can rent a surfboard right at the beach if you don’t have one, but be careful of the undertow and marine life; there have been some shark sightings at Nauset recently.

9) Go Bridge Jumping

This one is for my fellow thrill seekers. I cannot tell you how proud I was the first time I did a backflip off the Herring River Bridge. You can jump off bridges into rivers all over the Cape; just be sure that the one you decide to jump off is safe (meaning it’s high tide, no strong currents and you see other people jumping).

10) Walk Around Harwich Port

Harwich Port has restaurants and shops. It is smaller and low-key than the nearby Chatham but is within walking distance of the beach. Harwich Port is great for grabbing lunch or ice cream during your beach day. Check out Pleasant Street Beach, right next to Harwich Port.

Some of my favorite shops in Harwich Port are Sativa and Sundae School.

11) Have A Boat Day

Having a boat day on the Cape is so fun. You can go on a tour or rent a boat to use. If you are lucky enough to do this, go to Monomoy Island and see if you can spot any Great White Sharks. You could also grab a tube and water skis and zip around Nantucket Sound.

Best Day Trips From Cape Cod

Cape Cod is an excellent place to visit or spend a weeklong or weekend trip with plenty of things to do in the area and surrounding area. I recommend spending a day or morning outside of the city and some great places to explore are Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard.

Nantucket is the perfect place for a day trip from the Cape. This preppy island has ferries running all the time from Harwich and Hyannis. If you take the fast ferry from Hyannis, you will be on Nantucket in an hour.

While on Nantucket, visit Cisco Beach, Downtown Nantucket, and Jetties Beach.

Martha’s Vineyard

Martha’s Vineyard is also an island off the Cape known for its adorable gingerbread houses (a street of tiny houses resembling gingerbread houses), the movie Jaws, and its gorgeous beaches.

While on Martha’s Vineyard, check out Oaks Bluff, Jaws Bridge, and the gingerbread houses and enjoy a tour of the island .

Best Tours To Take In Cape Cod

Cape Cod offers a variety of enjoyable tours for exploring the area, taking to the water, and visiting unique landmarks. For a trip to the Cape, here are four great tour options:

  • Discover Martha’s Vineyard on a Boston day trip . See the charming gingerbread cottages of Oak Bluffs, quaint shops in Edgartown, and stunning Gay Head Cliffs.
  • You can explore all that Cape Cod offers on a self-guided audio tour from the comfort and flexibility of your own vehicle.
  • Discover Cape Cod and Provincetown on your own time with this self-guided audio tour . Admire the area’s rich history, breathtaking scenery, and hidden gems from the comfort of your vehicle.
  • Embark on a whale-watching cruise from Provincetown and spot marine wildlife in their natural habitat off Cape Cod.

Best Places To Stay In Cape Cod

No town on the Cape is “bad” or “unsafe” to stay in. Of course, some areas are more excellent and some are more affordable than others.

Some of the more expensive areas of Cape Cod include Chatham, Provincetown, Truro, Wellfleet and Brewster. The more affordable towns include Dennis, Harwich, Hyannis, Barnstable and Yarmouth.

My favorite towns to stay in on the Cape are Harwich, Chatham, Provincetown and Brewster.

Here are 10 of the best places to stay during your Cape Cod getaway:

Where To Stay In Harwich

Harwich is where I grew up. Located on Nantucket Sound, Harwich is laid-back but preppy, with an adorable downtown on the beach.

  • Wequassett Resort and Spa – Located in Harwich, this hotel has a private beach, is within walking distance of other beaches and is within a ten-minute drive of restaurants and bars. The hotel also features 120 rooms, an outdoor swimming pool and an 18-hole golf course.
  • Winstead Beach Resort – Located close to Chatham Lighthouse and Cape Cod Lavender Farm, this hotel has 14 individually furnished rooms with bicycle rentals and a self-serve breakfast.

Where To Stay In Brewster

Brewster is all about biking. Located on the beach directly north of Harwich, Brewser is the Cape’s hidden gem. Brewster is home to the hippies; it is a ‘go to a cafe and ride your bike to a yoga class’ type of town.

  • The Mansion at Ocean Edge – This luxury upscale hotel has three outdoor swimming pools, two indoor swimming people and a golf course. Active guests can enjoy cycling, basketball and aerobics.
  • Four Points by Sheraton Eastham Cape Cod – This 3-star hotel is located just a 15-minute walk from the Cape Cod National Seashore and rooms sleep between one and six people.
  • The Inn at the Oaks – This hotel has rooms that can comfortably sleep up to five people. The hotel also has free self-parking, a complimentary continental breakfast, a terrace and a garden.

Where To Stay In Chatham

Cape Cod has a large number of different places to eat and drink. Whether you are looking for a lively brunch, a relaxing lunch, or a lovely evening meal with your friends, there is something for everyone in Cape Cod.

Here are ten of the best restaurants in Cape Cod:

  • Snowy Owl Coffee Roasters – Locations all over the Cape. (Chatham, Brewster, Sandwich) Snowy Owl has the best coffee on the Cape and maybe in Massachusetts. This rustic cafe also serves delicious food! I would recommend the empanadas.
  • Wolfies – Wolfies, located in Dennis, has amazing muffins your head size. These muffins are delicious. Wolfies will have a line out the door, so ensure you get there early.
  • Hot Chocolate Sparrow – Craving something sweet? The Hot Chocolate Sparrow in Orleans will satisfy your sweet tooth with delicious mocha lattes and excellent pastries.
  • Sea Grille – The Sea Grille is a luxurious seafood restaurant in Harwich. If you are looking for a classic New England meal, the Sea Grille is for you. I love the Lobster pasta.

  • Far Land Provisions – Looking for some insane sandwiches in Provincetown? Far Land Provisions is the perfect lunch on a beach day. These sandwiches are top-notch. I love the Pilgrim Lake!
  • Sundae School – You should never skip dessert while on vacation! Sundae School has the best ice cream in town. Locations in Dennis and Harwich Sundae School will leave you wanting another sundae.
  • Chatham Squire – Located in downtown Chatham, the Chatham Squire is a lovely tavern with live music and a rowdy crowd.
  • Duck Inn Pub – The Duck Inn Pub is located in downtown Hyannis. A local spot, the Duck Inn Pub, will leave you with exciting stories.

Things You Need To Know About Cape Cod

The Cape is known for having amazing summers and the many Great White Sharks that terrify beachgoers. As of 2023, around 800 sharks are swimming off the coast of Cape Cod. Sharks are something to take into account when visiting the Cape. Years ago, I would have swam to the buoy (the buoy signifies the farthest you can swim out from the beach), but now I wouldn’t go past my waist.

Avoid swimming in Chatham, Truro, Provincetown, Wellfleet, Eastham and Orleans. Most of all, avoid Monomoy Island. If you take a trip to Nantucket, avoid Great Point.

Swimming is safe in Harwich, Dennis, Yarmouth, Hyannis, Barnstable and Brewster.

Best Time To Visit Cape Cod

Visit Cape Cod in the summer months. July and August tend to be extremely expensive and crowded, so if you want to save money, go during a shoulder season. September is a great time to go if you want to avoid crowds and save money.

How To Get To Cape Cod, Massachusetts

One of the things that makes Cape Cod a great summer destination for a getaway is that it is easily accessible by direct flight from several cities around the United States.

Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) is the closest airport, which has daily domestic and international flights worldwide.

The airport is located an hour outside of the peninsula and you can pick up an Uber at the airport, taxi, or rent a car.

A Self-Guided Tour of the Kennedy Legacy Trail

self guided tour cape cod

The Kennedy family famously spent a lot of time in Hyannis, thanks in large part to their oceanfront property in Hyannis Port. The massive compound acted as a base for the family, resulting in many members spending their summers there. The houses remain in the family to this day and hold a special place in Cape Cod’s history.

During your time in Hyannis, you’ll be able to take a self-guided walking tour of some of the locations where the Kennedys spent their time while reading about their influence on Hyannis and Cape Cod as a whole. When following the Kennedy Legacy Trail , there are blue dots on the sidewalks throughout town that will lead you through some sites that are associated with the Kennedy family.

The walk is about 1.6 miles and will take you about 90 minutes to complete, but it’s well worth the time because of how much you’ll learn about this influential American family.

The tour begins at 397 Main Street, home of the John F. Kennedy Hyannis Museum . The museum features numerous multimedia displays and a series of exhibits that provide insight into the time that JFK spent on Cape Cod.

If you plan to go inside the museum, the cost is $13 for adults, $7 for children between the ages of six and 17, and free for younger kids. There is a discounted seniors’ rate available, as well.

Main Street Hyannis

The second stop on the tour is Hyannis’ Main Street, particularly the corner of Main and Pearl. John F. Kennedy ran his presidential campaign out of Hyannis, which turned the small, quiet town into a bustling media center in 1960. Today, there’s a plaque outside of Torino restaurant and pictures of the Kennedys in Hyannis along the side of the Sturgis Charter Public School that commemorate this period in history.

Roses for Rose Kennedy

You might notice an abundance of roses throughout downtown Hyannis, and those are because of Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy, mother of JFK and the Kennedy family’s matriarch. Rose lived in Hyannis year-round for much of her later life, and there is a plaque outside of an art studio on Pearl Street that honors her contributions.

St. Francis Xavier Church

At the end of Pearl Street, you’ll take a right on South Street, which brings you to Saint Francis Xavier Parish , known colloquially as The Kennedy Church. When Rose and Joe Kennedy bought their home in Hyannis in the 1920s, they chose to attend this church, and over the years, many important family events took place here. When John F. Kennedy was president, he would sit in the second row with his family, while members of the Secret Service would surround him in rows one and three. This church is also where Arnold Schwarzenegger married Maria Shriver, Rose and Joe Kennedy’s granddaughter.

Hyannis Armory

When John F. Kennedy was elected President of the United States, he was at the Kennedy Compound in Hyannis. Once Richard Nixon conceded, JFK drove to the Hyannis Armory, the next stop on this tour, to deliver his acceptance speech. You’ll have to double back to reach the armory, as it’s about two blocks east of the church, across the street from Barnstable Town Hall.

Aselton Park

You’ll find three different parts of the tour at Aselton Park: information on the Cape Cod National Seashore , the Peace Corp Memorial, and the Cape Cod Maritime Museum.

John F. Kennedy had a great deal of love for Cape Cod and wanted to see its beauty retained for generations to come. One of the first things he did after being elected was to establish the Cape Cod National Seashore, which protected more than 43,500 acres of oceanfront land and prevented development on its shores. There is a plaque with information on this National Park at Aselton.

In 1961, Kennedy established the Peace Corps , which aimed at sending volunteers from the United States to help out in less developed nations. The memorial at Aselton Park commemorates the 50th anniversary of this organization.

Ted Kennedy is responsible for securing the funding for the Cape Cod Maritime Museum , which is dedicated to remembering, celebrating, and preserving Cape Cod’s maritime heritage. Visiting the museum costs $10 for adults, $8 for students and seniors, and $5 for kids five and under. Active military members are free.

Hyannis Harbor

It’s a well-known fact that the Kennedys loved sailing, and many of their trips left from Hyannis Harbor. Tours into Nantucket Sound leave from Bismore Park, and will even take you to see the Kennedy Compound from the water if you wish. In fact, Ted Kennedy’s sailboat, The Maya, is still moored at the Hyannisport Yacht Club, and some tours will show you exactly where it is located.

JFK Memorial

This self-guided tour wraps up at perhaps its most rewarding site, as the JFK Memorial is at Veterans Memorial Park, which features a scenic beach overlooking the harbor. The memorial itself features a fountain and a stone wall with a plaque and is a great way to finish your walk of Hyannis.

Celebrating the Kennedy Family

The Kennedy Legacy Trail is an outstanding reminder of what the Kennedy family has meant not only to the people of Cape Cod but to the country as a whole through its contributions. If you’re looking to get to know some of the Cape’s rich history during your vacation, walking this trail is an excellent way to learn about Cape Cod while seeing much of Hyannis.

Description

Stop At: Cape Cod Visitor Center, Barnstable, MA 02630, USA

We begin our journey into America's distant past at the Cape Cod Visitor Center. Prepare to dive into the Pilgrims, the nation's origins and the long history of the Cape. As we begin our drive through picturesque Massachusetts towns, we'll learn about the Nauset tribe, their legends and traditions, and why they were wary when strange ships appeared on the eastern horizon.

Note: This 65+mile-long tour covers the essentials of Cape Cod in 2-3 hours.

Duration: 10 minutes

Stop At: Scargo Tower - OPEN AS OF JUNE 2021, Scargo Hill Road, Dennis, Massachusetts

An optional detour takes us past the fish-shaped Scargo Lake. According to Nauset legend, this lake was built by a great chieftain to comfort his daughter, who could not stop weeping over three dead fish. We'll also learn about the Nauset party who first spotted the Mayflower, and the fears they had about its approach.

Pass By: Harwich, Harwich, Massachusetts

Another optional detour takes us to Harwich, a quaint Cape town known for its numerous beautiful beaches. If you fancy a swim, this is one of the best places on the Cape for it!

Stop At: Cape Cod Lavender Farm, Off, Weston Woods Rd, Harwich, MA 02645, USA

While in Harwich, we'll visit the Cape Cod Lavender Farm, a secluded estate that's just as gorgeous and fragrant as it sounds. Walk any of the woodland trails for free, soak up the smell of lavender, and pick up a few souvenirs!

Stop At: Bank Street Beach, 16 Bank St, Harwich, Massachusetts 02646

Next, our Harwich detour will take us to Bank Street Beach, the perfect place to relax or dip your toes into the Atlantic.

Stop At: Eastham, Eastham, Massachusetts

As we continue our drive, we'll enter Eastham, a perfectly picturesque little Colonial town. We'll also hear about the embattled first encounter between the Pilgrims and the Nauset, the daring assistance offered by Squanto, and the very first Thanksgiving, where the Pilgrims and Nauset celebrated a truce.

Stop At: First Encounter Beach, 1699 Samoset Rd, Eastham, Massachusetts

Continuing down the Cape, we'll arrive at First Encounter Beach, where that dramatic skirmish between Nauset and Pilgrims took place. The beach now bears a plaque commemorating the encounter and the eventual truce.

Stop At: Salt Pond Visitor Center, Route 6, Eastham, Massachusetts 02642

A little farther on, we'll arrive at the Salt Pond Visitor Center. This miniature museum is the perfect opportunity to catch up on some extra Cape history, use the bathroom, or just stretch your legs.

Stop At: Nauset Light, 2 Nauset Light Beach Rd, Eastham, Massachusetts 02642

As we continue our drive up the Cape, we'll spot the Nauset Light, the quaint little lighthouse that features in every quintessential Cape Cod photograph. We'll also learn about its importance, and how the Cape's rough waters earned the nickname of "ocean graveyard" before the lighthouse was built.

Stop At: Nauset Lighthouse, 120 Nauset Light Beach Rd, Eastham, Massachusetts 02642

Stop At: The Three Sisters Lighthouses, Cable Road, Eastham, Massachusetts

Continuing our drive, we'll come to three squat white lighthouses called the Three Sisters Lighthouses. What's peculiar about these lighthouses is that they're not on the coast at all! They're actually nestled among a thicket of trees pretty far inland. Hear about why that is, and how they came to be there. We'll also learn about how the Cape transformed from Nauset land to Colonial fishing towns, and then from fishing towns to a tourist hotspot.

Stop At: Mass Audubon Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary, 291 US-6, South Wellfleet, MA 02663, USA

Another optional detour takes us to the Audubon Wildlife Sanctuary. With five miles of trails through four different biomes, and more species of birds and other critters than you can count, this stop is bound to delight nature enthusiasts, bird watchers, and avid hikers alike.

Stop At: Marconi Wireless Station, Six miles north of Salt Pond Visitor Center, Wellfleet, Massachusetts

As we continue driving, we'll pass Marconi Station, the first radio station to ever send a wireless message across the Atlantic! The station also played a pivotal role in an infamous oceanic tragedy: the sinking of the Titanic in 1912. Learn how a radio station hundreds of miles away saved lives on that fateful day!

Stop At: Atlantic White Cedar Swamp Trail, Atlantic White Cedar Swamp Trl, Wellfleet, MA 02667, USA

The next optional detour takes us to the Atlantic White Cedar Swamp Trail, a perfect spot for hikers of all experience levels to stretch their legs and take in Cape Cod's varied terrain. Within a single, short mile lies a beach, a freshwater marsh, a deciduous forest, and a salt plain! Continuing our drive, we'll also hear about Cape Cod's former whaling industry.

Stop At: Pilgrim Spring Trail, Route 6, Truro, Massachusetts 02666

As we continue driving, we'll pass the Pilgrim Spring Trail, a short hike which leads to one of the first places the Pilgrims came after landing on the Cape. Here, the weary travelers found their first freshwater spring--an essential find in helping them survive. Afterward, we'll continue on toward Provincetown.

Stop At: MacMillan Pier, MacMillan Pier, Provincetown, MA 02657, USA

As we drive through P-Town, we'll arrive at Macmillan Pier, where thousands of ships have launched over the years. Here, we get to see how past and present really intermingle on the Cape. These days, the pier is mostly used to launch whale watching expeditions.

Stop At: Pilgrim Monument and Provincetown Museum, 1 High Pole Hill Rd, Provincetown, MA 02657, USA

Our penultimate stop is the Pilgrim Monument: the tallest all-granite monument in the entire country! Every year since its completion in 1910, thousands of tourists climb the steps of this 250-foot colossus to get a panoramic view of the ocean from the top. It's well worth the trek! Next, we'll hear about the Mayflower Contract, the rough set of laws the Pilgrims set for themselves upon landing in the New World.

Stop At: Pilgrim's First Landing Park, West End of Commercial St., Downtown Center, Provincetown, Massachusetts 02657

Finally, we'll end up where it all began: the site where the Mayflower first struck land. Explore the park and imagine what it must have been like for the settlers, after ten harrowing weeks at sea, to step onto Nauset soil right here on November 11th, 1620. Our tour officially ends at this historic stop.

Sorting, ranking, and search results

City Baloon Tours wants to make your searches as relevant as possible. That's why we offer many ways to help you find the right experiences for you.

On some pages, you can select how to sort the results we display and also use filter options to see only those search results that meet your chosen preferences. You'll see explanations of what those sort options mean when you select them.

If you see a Badge of Excellence label, the award is based on average review ratings, share of bookings with a review, and number of bookings through City Baloon Tours over a 12-month period.

The importance of any one factor over any other in a sort order varies, and the balance is constantly being reviewed and adjusted. We're always updating our systems and testing new ways to refine and improve your results to make them as relevant as possible to meet your needs.

Compliance status

Screen-reader and keyboard navigation.

  • Screen-reader optimization: we run a background process that learns the website’s components from top to bottom, to ensure ongoing compliance even when updating the website. In this process, we provide screen-readers with meaningful data using the ARIA set of attributes. For example, we provide accurate form labels; descriptions for actionable icons (social media icons, search icons, cart icons, etc.); validation guidance for form inputs; element roles such as buttons, menus, modal dialogues (popups), and others. Additionally, the background process scans all of the website’s images and provides an accurate and meaningful image-object-recognition-based description as an ALT (alternate text) tag for images that are not described. It will also extract texts that are embedded within the image, using an OCR (optical character recognition) technology. To turn on screen-reader adjustments at any time, users need only to press the Alt+1 keyboard combination. Screen-reader users also get automatic announcements to turn the Screen-reader mode on as soon as they enter the website. These adjustments are compatible with all popular screen readers, including JAWS and NVDA.
  • Keyboard navigation optimization: The background process also adjusts the website’s HTML, and adds various behaviors using JavaScript code to make the website operable by the keyboard. This includes the ability to navigate the website using the Tab and Shift+Tab keys, operate dropdowns with the arrow keys, close them with Esc, trigger buttons and links using the Enter key, navigate between radio and checkbox elements using the arrow keys, and fill them in with the Spacebar or Enter key.Additionally, keyboard users will find quick-navigation and content-skip menus, available at any time by clicking Alt+1, or as the first elements of the site while navigating with the keyboard. The background process also handles triggered popups by moving the keyboard focus towards them as soon as they appear, and not allow the focus drift outside of it.Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Disability profiles supported in our website

  • Epilepsy Safe Mode: this profile enables people with epilepsy to use the website safely by eliminating the risk of seizures that result from flashing or blinking animations and risky color combinations.
  • Visually Impaired Mode: this mode adjusts the website for the convenience of users with visual impairments such as Degrading Eyesight, Tunnel Vision, Cataract, Glaucoma, and others.
  • Cognitive Disability Mode: this mode provides different assistive options to help users with cognitive impairments such as Dyslexia, Autism, CVA, and others, to focus on the essential elements of the website more easily.
  • ADHD Friendly Mode: this mode helps users with ADHD and Neurodevelopmental disorders to read, browse, and focus on the main website elements more easily while significantly reducing distractions.
  • Blindness Mode: this mode configures the website to be compatible with screen-readers such as JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, and TalkBack. A screen-reader is software for blind users that is installed on a computer and smartphone, and websites must be compatible with it.
  • Keyboard Navigation Profile (Motor-Impaired): this profile enables motor-impaired persons to operate the website using the keyboard Tab, Shift+Tab, and the Enter keys. Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Additional UI, design, and readability adjustments

  • Font adjustments – users, can increase and decrease its size, change its family (type), adjust the spacing, alignment, line height, and more.
  • Color adjustments – users can select various color contrast profiles such as light, dark, inverted, and monochrome. Additionally, users can swap color schemes of titles, texts, and backgrounds, with over 7 different coloring options.
  • Animations – epileptic users can stop all running animations with the click of a button. Animations controlled by the interface include videos, GIFs, and CSS flashing transitions.
  • Content highlighting – users can choose to emphasize important elements such as links and titles. They can also choose to highlight focused or hovered elements only.
  • Audio muting – users with hearing devices may experience headaches or other issues due to automatic audio playing. This option lets users mute the entire website instantly.
  • Cognitive disorders – we utilize a search engine that is linked to Wikipedia and Wiktionary, allowing people with cognitive disorders to decipher meanings of phrases, initials, slang, and others.
  • Additional functions – we provide users the option to change cursor color and size, use a printing mode, enable a virtual keyboard, and many other functions.

Cape Cod & The Islands

Level of support - self contained.

On self-contained tours you will carry your own gear and there will be no vehicle support. Adventure Cycling’s traditional self-contained tours have a single leader and around 14 participants who share cooking duties and camp for the vast majority of overnights; on longer tours, roughly one indoor night per 10 riding days is budgeted. Learn More

Physical Difficulty - Level 1

Great for those looking to try out bicycle touring and experienced riders looking for a more relaxing tour model. Average daily mileage is 35 miles and below. The terrain is generally gentle with occasional rolling hills. Average elevation gain is less than 1500 feet per day. (Formerly Beginner/Beginner+ tours)

Average Mileage: <35/day Average Elevation Gain Range: <1500ft/day

Spend a week cycling along the beautiful Atlantic Ocean shoreline. On this tour, we’ll view the seaports, glacially formed kettle ponds, and lighthouses of southeastern Massachusetts, visit historic sites from the days of colonial America, and explore quaint shops on Cape Cod and Martha’s Vineyard. Attractions of special interest include Cape Cod National Seashore; a full-scale reproduction of the Mayflower; the preserved village of New Bedford, once the whaling capital of the world; and the Chatham Marconi Maritime Center. Every day on this tour is spent within 15 miles of the Atlantic, and each night close to a large body of freshwater or saltwater.

This tour is suitable for all riders and is a great choice for anyone looking to learn the basics of self-contained touring, or for an experienced bicycle traveler looking for a week of relaxed cycling. The riding is relaxed, services are plentiful, and the campgrounds are outstanding.

“I was very impressed by the leaders. They were very effective at getting us/gear/equipment/schedules organized, and they were all genuinely glad to be out riding bike with us and getting to know us. I also liked the way the tour was structured — I liked that everyone was able to depart when ready, and ride at their own pace, as long as they arrived before dinner. I felt no pressure to go fast or slow, and that was very liberating for me.” – Tour ;Participant

Day 1. Plymouth, Massachusetts, 0 miles

We’ll meet just outside Plymouth, Massachusetts, home to the first sustainable settlement for the Pilgrims after they wintered near Provincetown. Those arriving early can explore the Plymouth Plantation, the Mayflower II (a full-scale reproduction of the original), and the famous Plymouth Rock, traditionally regarded as the spot where William Bradford and the Mayflower Pilgrims disembarked on the mainland.

Day 2. Plymouth to Provincetown, 10 miles (Optional 11-mile loop)

After a short ride from our campground we’ll board a fast ferry to Provincetown. If you didn’t get a chance to visit the Mayflower II we’ll see it as we depart Plymouth harbor. In the afternoon we can explore the Province Lands bike trails to Race Point Beach, the first landing site of the Pilgrims before they continued on to Plymouth. Or you can spend the afternoon exploring the shops, restaurants, museums, eclectic architecture, and picturesque docks of Provincetown. Our campground will be along the inner Cape, a mere stone’s throw from the mighty Atlantic.

Day 3. Provincetown to Brewster, 39 miles

After leaving bustling Provincetown we’ll cycle on bike paths and quiet back roads. Along the way we can visit the Chatham Marconi Maritime Center, celebrating the history and science of 20th century radio communication, a trio of lighthouses, or the Cape Cod National Seashore’s information center. Be sure to stop at the Hot Chocolate Sparrow in Orleans for a late afternoon treat. Our evening destination is Nickerson State Park. The upper campsites at Nickerson are in a setting that feels more like the piney woods of the Carolinas than Cape Cod, where sand dunes and salt marshes are more often the norm. These woods slope down to a series of freshwater kettle ponds, which have no inlet streams — they’re entirely dependent on groundwater and precipitation, so their water levels fluctuate seasonally.

Day 4. Brewster to Martha's Vineyard, 36 miles.

Today we’ll work our way to Hyannis, where we’ll catch a ferry to Martha’s Vineyard. Before we get there, we’ll have the chance to ride through Chatham and visit the Chatham Lighthouse. From Chatham, we’ll ride on the Old Colony Rail Trail and Cape Cod Rail Trail through forests and past kettle ponds. We will meet in the late afternoon at Hyannis Harbor to board our ferry to Oak Bluffs on Martha’s Vineyard. After a short ride we’ll settle into our campground, where we’ll be set up for the next two nights.

Day 5. Nantucket Island Loop, 34 miles.

We’ll ride back to Oak Bluffs and jump on the ferry to Nantucket, where we’ll spend the day exploring a loop ride that showcases the best of the island. We won’t be here long enough for you to read Moby-Dick, but you’ll be able to take in the area’s rich history. At the end of the day, we’ll hop aboard the ferry back to Martha’s Vineyard and settle back in for the night.

Day 6. Layover Day in Martha's Vineyard, 0-40 miles

You can ride gear-free today on a 40-mile trip around Martha’s Vineyard, or leave your bicycle behind and just hang out on the white sandy beaches of the Vineyard. Other options include riding to one or more of the Vineyard’s four lighthouses and sampling the amazing seafood in the island ports of Vineyard Haven, Oak Bluffs, and Edgartown.

Day 7. Martha's Vineyard to Sandwich, 28 miles

Our 4th and final ferry ride takes us back to the mainland at Woods Hole. You should have plenty of time to explore the famous Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, where guided walking tours are a great way to learn about its history and research. More bike trails are in store for us today, along with a few short but very steep hills known as “sand rollers.” We’ll finish the day with a ride along the Cape Cod Canal before reaching our home for the night at Shawme-Crowell State Forest.

Day 8. Sandwich to Plymouth, 26 miles

After crossing the Sagamore Bridge and riding on the opposite side of the Cape Cod Canal we’ll enjoy the gently rolling hills, cranberry bogs, and lovely lowlands of southeastern Massachusetts. Soon we’ll arrive back in Plymouth for one last look at the ocean before we say goodbye to our new friends and head for home.

Accommodations -

Meals - shared cooking.

Your group will share responsibilities for food purchase, preparation, and clean up on a rotating basis. Vegetarian and special dietary needs will be accommodated, though food selection may be limited in some locations.

Physical Difficulty -

Terrain - rolling hills.

Tours with Rolling Hills are those that have a bit more climbing in them, but the grades are still fairly relaxed. We’ll typically see climbing of less than 1,800 feet per day and venture into the 2-5% average for grade. (19-38 vertical feet/mile).
