Whether you’re looking to enjoy breakfast on the balcony or a late-night snack, you can get Carnival room service delivered to your cabin 24/7.

On October 1, 2022, Carnival Cruise Line debuted a new room service menu. The simplified menu still includes a complimentary continental breakfast, but daytime room service is now priced à la carte.

Read on to learn about the new Carnival Cruise Line room service menu.

Table of Contents

Carnival Room Service Menu and Prices

Carnival’s room service menu consists of a Continental Breakfast Menu from 6:00 am to 10:00 am and the Rest of Day/Evening Menu (Leisure Dining Menu) from 10:00 am to 6:00 am.

The new room service menu eliminates the late-night menu, which was a favorite for many cruisers. The new daytime menu is also priced à la carte, without complimentary items.

According to Carnival Cruise Line’s Chief Operations Officer Neil Palomba, “we are updating our room service menu to add more options on an à la carte basis, while maintaining a complimentary breakfast offering each morning. These changes are consistent with trends across the industry, and also provide us opportunities to continue to work towards various sustainability goals, including food, water and energy reduction, while still giving our guests the option of 24/7 room service if they so choose.”

The new menus are very similar to the old room service menu guests are accustomed to seeing. Perhaps the biggest change is that all daytime room service menus are now priced à la carte menus.

Additionally, there’s no more late-night menu. Instead, the daytime room service menu runs from 10:00 am to 6:00 am. But if you’re looking for a late-night snack, the sweet treats from the daytime menu are a great choice.

If you order à la carte menus, the cruise line automatically adds an 18% service charge.

Guests can order beverages from the bar at standard rates. However, you can’t use your Carnival cruise drink package for beverages ordered through room service.

Continental Breakfast Menu and Prices

Carnival Cruise Line New Breakfast Room Service Menu

The continental breakfast is complimentary for all guests , along with à la carte selections at an additional price. Breakfast room service is delivered between 6:00 am to 10:00 am.

The menu is available every morning of the cruise except for the last morning of the cruise. On the last morning, guests can enjoy breakfast at the Lido restaurant or main dining room.

You can order the complimentary continental breakfast by filling out the breakfast menu and hanging it outside your cabin door before 3 am.

Your cabin will have a stack of breakfast menus. But if you run out, you can always ask your room steward to provide more.

The new breakfast menu is nearly identical to the old continental room service menu. Some breakfast items are substituted, and the prices for the à la carte items are an additional $1 to $2.

The complimentary room service items are gone with the new Leisure Dining Menu. Many of the old favorites remain, but all of the Leisure Dining Menu items have a fee of $3-$7 per item. Guests can also order beverages from Carnival’s drink menu at standard rates.

Carnival’s New Room Service Menu

by Prof. Cruise · Published September 28, 2022 · Updated September 28, 2022

Photos of Carnivals new room service menu with text that reads: Carnival's NEW room service menu. Coming to all Carnival ships in October, 2022.

Carnival recently announced more changes to room service, this time to the menu:

Letter outlining changes coming to Carnival's room service menu as of Oct 1 2022. There will be a new menu.

While continental breakfast items will remain complimentary from 6am-10am, all other items will be priced à la carte as of October 1, 2022. So, want to see the new menu? Or did you come here to see the awesome pocket photo I accidentally took this morning while rooting around for stray M&M’s (Good news, I found one!):

A blue m&m against a blurry black background.

What? The menu? Fine. Drum roll please! Or perhaps we should play Chopin’s Marche Funèbre (Funeral March) to mark the end of most free room service on Carnival…

Carnival’s New Room Service Menu (Oct. 2022)

New Carnival room service menu

I anticipate three possible outcomes of this change:

  • Those Carnival loyalists who have been threatening to “explore other options” every time the line has made a cut or change over the past 50 years because this is the “last straw” will continue to pack their own metal straws (they hated that change too) and get Funderstruck (of course, they’ll only pretend to have fun).
  • This will actually be the last straw and I’ll go from losing 90% of the money I spent buying Carnival stock right before Covid to 100%. Sigh.
  • Drunk spring breakers will order a ton of pricey late night room service, revenue will increase, Carnival stock will go up, and I’ll have more money for cruises.

While I don’t personally plan on ordering any of the new room service items, I’m crossing my fingers for #3. And with that…

Class Dismissed!

I’ve never ordered room service, but the prices seam reasonable to me. Which night is dropped for the 5 day menu and do you know the order for 5 day? I would like to book the steakhouse, but would also like to know what is available in the MDR before choosing a day. Thank you!

Hi Kathy. I just received the 5 day menus. I’ll have them posted by tomorrow!

Here they are. Have a great cruise! https://profcruise.com/carnival-5-day-dinner-menus/

Awesome!!! Thanks so much!

Welcome! Enjoy!

I heard it was going to be a better menu… I’m not seeing anything better but now there is a charge… this is not a good thing… and what happened to the BLT? I don’t think the charges are small…it’ll add up fast… I know changes have to happen but I don’t think they did the right thing on this one… why not just add a delivery charge and not a charge on all the items ?

Re: breakfast room- service menu. There needs to be sugar free items.

I thought they were adding things to the menu, not taking things off. I was excited to see the new additions, but I don’t see any. 🧐🤔

When we cruise Carnival we book pricey rooms and spend money at the specialty restaurants and the shops on board. Charging for room service may be the straw that broke the camel’s back. We’re not cruising on a $100 room rate and now it’s starting to feel like we’re being nickeled and dimed. I don’t mind paying extra for quality, but a $5 PB and J?!? It may be time to change lines. It’s hard because we really don’t like the average higher tier cruise line customer. Ugh.

' src=

I’m ok w the changes. I love Seaday brunch & all my faves are still there. The room service I never use anyway but I have noticed a lot of uneaten food sitting out in the hallways. Maybe it will help minimize waste. I love cruising! Thanks for keeping us informed🤗

Ultimate Guide to Room Service on Carnival Cruise Line With Menus (2022)

One of the best parts of a Carnival cruise is trying all the fantastic food options. But you don’t have to leave your stateroom to have a meal or snack! Room service on Carnival is available around the clock.

carnival cruises room service

I’ll answer all your questions about Carnival Cruise Line room service. Plus, I’ve included current menus, along with prices for any items that aren’t complimentary. Bon appétit!

Is room service free on Carnival?

Although you might remember that in 2019 Carnival announced room service would no longer be free on their ships, outrage from cruisers caused the company to quickly change its mind.

Carnival currently offers several free room service options during the day, from 6 AM until 10 PM. The room service menu offers a selection of salads, sandwiches, and desserts that are always complimentary with your cruise fare during this time.

They also offer a free continental breakfast, delivered to your room in the morning if you order before 3 AM.

Basic drinks are also complimentary with your room service order. These include:

  • Hot chocolate

Carnival also offers hot meals and snacks, as well as hot breakfast sandwiches in the morning, for a small additional fee.

How do you order room service on a Carnival cruise?

Ordering room service on a Carnival cruise is easy—just dial 8000 on your stateroom phone. You can access the room service menu before you call by scanning the room service menu QR code posted on the wall.

Tip: You’ll need to connect to the onboard WiFi to scan the QR code, but there’s no charge to use it for scanning codes, using the HUB app , or by visiting carnival.com during your cruise.

Is Carnival’s room service available 24/7?

Room service offerings are always available on Carnival ships, except for disembarkation morning. However, from 10 PM until 6 AM, you can only order from the “A Little $ A Lot of Yummy” portion of the menu. This selection includes hot meals and snacks priced from $2 to $6.

Tip: Looking for a late-night snack but don’t want to pay for room service? All Carnival ships have a 24-hour pizza joint on board—either Pizzeria del Capitano or Pizza Pirate .

Can you order soda or alcohol from room service on a Carnival cruise?

Carnival’s room service menu includes a selection of sodas and beers you can add to your room service order, at regular bar prices ( see an example of a bar menu with prices here ).

Soft drink choices include Pepsi, Diet Pepsi, Pepsi Zero Sugar, Pepsi Caffeine Free, Sierra Mist, Sierra Mist Zero, Mug Root Beer, and Mountain Dew.

Beer choices include Bud Light, Miller Lite, Coors Light, Heineken, Corona, and Pilsner Urquell.

You’ll also have the option of ordering one of their ship-made craft beers like ThirstyFrog Caribbean Wheat, Parched Pig West Coast IPA, or Parched Pig Toasted Amber.

Soda and beer ordered via room service aren’t covered by Carnival’s drink packages , including Bottomless Bubbles and CHEERS!

How do you order room service for continental breakfast on Carnival?

You can order a free continental breakfast delivered to your room by filling out a breakfast hangtag and hanging it outside your door prior to 3 AM.

There should be a stack of hangtags in your stateroom (they’re usually hanging on the wall), but your room steward can get you more if you run out.

You can choose the time you’d like your breakfast delivered in half-hour blocks, from 5 AM until 10 AM. Complimentary options include:

Fruit and cereal

  • Frosted Flakes
  • Froot Loops
  • Corn Flakes
  • Lucky Charms

Tipping for room service on Carnival

Although Carnival does charge passengers automatic gratuities that are divided amongst the service staff, it’s always a nice idea to give a small tip to the crewmember who delivers your room service meals.

Some crewmembers actually volunteer for room service duty (on top of their already long hours) specifically to make some extra money from tips!

You don’t need to tip a lot—generally a dollar (or its equivalent) is just fine per meal that you have delivered.

Carnival Cruise Line room service FAQ

Carnival offers free room service options during the day, from 6 AM until 10 PM. The complimentary room service menu offers a selection of salads, sandwiches, and desserts.

Carnival ships offer room service 24/7, except on disembarkation morning.

Carnival doesn’t charge a delivery fee for room service. However, hot menu items do have an upcharge during the day. All room service items on the late-night menu have an upcharge.

Tipping for Carnival room service isn’t mandatory, but a cash gratuity of $1 per meal is customary for cruisers.

25 of us (7cabins) are sailing on the 6/18 Mardi Gras. The presidential suite (with the huge deck) is one of our cabins. We wanted to have the rest of the group join us there for sail away. I know there are sandwich platters and other items I can purchase and the specifics say “delivered on request”. Can I have that delivered around 3 pm on embarkation day so we can enjoy snacks during sail away?

Tuesday 13th of June 2023

Hi Maudeen, excellent question! In my experience, room service usually doesn't open on embarkation day until sailaway. That could vary by ship, but that's just what I've noticed. I'd recommend trying to call room service as soon as you're on the ship and/or ask your room steward about the earliest time to order. You probably won't be able to get your snacks at 3PM, but you can probably have them delivered not long after sailaway. I hope you and your group have a fantastic time on the Mardi Gras!!

Tuesday 20th of September 2022

Hello! Thank you for the informative post! When you say to tip the crew member who delivers your food $1 per meal, does that mean $1 per delivery or $1 per actual meal? We will be cruising with 5 kids so if we ordered breakfast in should we tip $7?

@Carrie Ann, that definitely helps. Thank you so much for your prompt response, I really appreciate it!

Hi Katie, I generally tip $1 per full adult-sized meal, so if each kid is having just a bowl of cereal and some juice (for example), you can tip a bit less — maybe $4-5 for the entire family. But if you order 5-6 trays worth of food, I'd tip more in the $7 range. Hope this helps!

Booking number [redacted] I wanted to surprise my fiancé when we get on the ship. So I ordered Skyy vodka and he won't drink it. Do you have Tito’s because that is all he will drink? Therefore, I would like to cancel the vodka. We don’t board until August 27. Please advise because I don't really want to pay $100 and have it go to waste. You can credit my card for $100. That would work too. Thank you so much.

Hi Carol, I'm an independent cruise travel writer, and Should Be Cruising has no affiliation with Carnival. If you're looking to change or cancel an order you have with Carnival, I'd advise reaching out to them directly. Calling the Fun Shops is probably your best bet - their number is 1-800-522-7648. Enjoy your cruise!

Can you order a bottle of liquor through room service on carnival sunshine.

Friday 12th of August 2022

Hi Madeline, your best bet if you want a bottle delivered to your room is to pre-order it before your cruise. You can find a list of all their drink options here.

If you'd rather wait until you're on the ship and order through room service, you'll be limited to the bottles they have in surplus, which might be limited depending on your sailing. Enjoy your cruise!

Wednesday 29th of June 2022

I'll be alone in my cabin, If I'm not sure what I can eat in one morning can I order a bagel and a croissant and a danish with my cereal or would all that be rude? I have stomach problems and never know how my day will start.

Hi Janet, that wouldn't be rude at all! I love cruising solo with Carnival, and I order all sorts of things for my room service breakfast. If I can't finish everything, I often pop the extras in the fridge (there's always plenty of plastic wrap on your breakfast tray to keep things fresh) for an easy snack later. If dairy irritates your stomach, be sure to write SOYA MILK in bold letters on the hangtag. That's usually the only dairy-free alternative on Carnival, and I've found that most of the kitchen and waitstaff call it "soya". Enjoy your cruise!

Cruise ship room service: A line-by-line guide to in-cabin dining

Kristy Tolley

There are few better places to be when hunger strikes than on a cruise ship. If the buffet is busy with people or packed away, 24-hour room service is always available to fill your belly. It's one of the greatest cruising amenities that's uniformly offered on all major cruise lines. No need to dress up for dinner — just order food, flip on your cabin TV and wait for your meal to arrive.

Wondering what you can order and how much it will cost you? Here's a line-by-line overview of room service options and pricing across the major cruise lines, along with in-cabin dining menus.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

How do I order room service on a cruise ship?

Just pick up your in-cabin phone and dial the room service number to order food. Easy!

Some cruise lines offer the option to order your food and drinks through your in-cabin TV or a smartphone app, which populates photos of the menu items. Some cruise line apps even have location-specific features that allow you to order food and drinks for delivery almost anywhere on the ship.

Breakfast is often ordered by filling out a pre-printed menu card left in your cabin and hanging it outside your door before you go to bed. Crew members collect the orders during the night and deliver your food the next morning at the time you specified.

Related: The ultimate guide to cruise ship food and dining

What types of food can I order to my cabin?

Many cruise lines offer a complimentary continental breakfast delivery, which typically includes pastries, bread, fruit, yogurt and coffee and tea. You can order hot breakfast items like eggs, pancakes and bacon, but they cost extra on select lines or in specific cabin categories.

After breakfast service ends in the late morning, all major cruise lines offer an all-day room service menu of salads, sandwiches, snacks and desserts. Most cruise lines have special in-room dining menus separate from what you'd find that day on the buffet or in the main dining room.

However, some of the more upscale lines and some select concierge cabin classes offer comprehensive in-suite dining menus, often with the convenience of ordering off the menu from the main dining room or specialty restaurants on board. This elevated in-room dining experience might include a white tablecloth setup and your meal delivered course by course to your cabin or suite.

You can access additional specialty food experiences from room service operations. These include fresh pizza delivery as seen on Carnival Cruise Line and MSC Cruises, a cutting-edge app feature for Champagne delivery on Virgin Voyages and lobster and caviar deliveries from luxury cruise lines such as Silversea Cruises.

Is room service free on a cruise ship?

carnival cruises room service

While most land-based hotels charge a premium for any food delivered to your room, cruise ships have a long legacy of including room service in their fares. Many cruisers' favorite amenity is the 24-hour complimentary access to generic yet classic menu items such as fresh fruit, a cheese plate or a club sandwich, not to mention continental breakfast.

Recent changes in the economics of cruising have sunset the glory days of unlimited, complimentary room service on several of the most popular cruise lines. Service fees and menus dominated by a la carte options are now the new norms across the industry.

Still, the fees are often considerably less than at comparable land-based resorts, and continental breakfast items are commonly free of charge (with the exception of MSC's lowest cabin class, which charges a per-item and service fee for breakfast service).

Related: 11 extra charges on cruise ships that will drive you nuts — and what you can do about them

How much does room service cost?

Depending on the cruise line and your cabin class, room service can be a complimentary all-inclusive service, billed per item or charged at a flat delivery fee. Most lines will offer complimentary continental breakfast options through room service with no service fee, even if other options cost extra.

Luxury lines, including Seabourn, Silversea and Regent Seven Seas Cruises, always include 24-hour room service as a standard amenity.

Delivery service fees per order can reach up to $9.95, the per-order rate currently on Norwegian Cruise Line's non-suite class cabins. A la carte prices average around $5 per item, whether that's a hot breakfast or a midday sandwich.

For example, on Carnival's new a la carte room service menu, salads cost $4 to $5 (with additional fees for adding proteins), sandwiches $5 to $7, snacks like pizza and chicken tenders $6 to $8 and dessert $3 to $5.

Do you have to tip for room service on a cruise?

On no-tipping lines, such as Seabourn and Silversea, crew members are compensated appropriately, and you do not need to tip for room service. On lines where guests are expected to tip crew members, determine first if a gratuity is automatically included in your room service order or delivery fee. If it's not, a small tip is always appreciated.

Depending on what you order and the line, you might not have the chance to sign a bill for your room service order, which could be a missed opportunity to add a tip. Come prepared with small bills to offer in appreciation of the service, as you'll find the room service staff works hard to expedite many meals around the ship.

carnival room service menu in mardi gras room

Carnival’s New Room Service Menu (with pricing)

In a confusing and poorly worded press release earlier this month , Carnival indicated they’d be changing the room service menus in the future. It created quite the stir online as it seemed to be just another one of Carnival’s numerous cutbacks. Today, Carnival Brand Ambassador John Heald shared the new room service menu, which will go into effect on October 1st.

Complimentary room service options for breakfast

The breakfast menu will look pretty similar to previous Carnival guests. It has options that used to be on the hang tags guests could put out the night before.

Breakfast will be offered from 6:00 AM to 10:00 AM and will have some complimentary options. Basically, a continental breakfast is offered at no additional charge. So you can get fruit, cereal, pastries, yogurt, and some juices without having to pay anything.

Guests can also choose from a variety of hot breakfast sandwiches for an additional fee. The cost is $5 – $6 per sandwhich, plus 18% gratuity. That’s an average of 58% higher than the $3- $4 per sandwich pricing Carnival was offering earlier this year.

carnival room service menu breakfast - oct 2022

All lunch and dinner room service options have a charge

As expected, all other items on the room service menu have a charge. Previously, the menu had both free and additional fee options. Carnival calls this “Leisure Dining,” and it’s available from 10 AM to 6 PM.

It was reported that there would be “higher quality” options because of this price. In reality, the menu released today closely resembles the one from earlier this year except for the additional costs. On average, the food that previously had a charge increased by $1 – $2 (a roughly 30% increase). Drinks, alcoholic and non-alcoholic, can be ordered at the current bar prices ( see all the bar prices here ).

Still, the pricing is moderate and cheaper than room service prices found in hotels or restaurants on land. If you hadn’t cruised Carnival before, you’d most likely find these prices perfectly reasonable. They also have the options you’d expect, like salads, sandwiches, and chicken tenders. There’s not much missing, but there’s also nothing here that screams “wow!”

carnival room service menu lunch oct 2022 page 1

Carnival is trying to fight food waste

Heald indicated that this move was less of a cutback and more to stop excessive food waste. In a Facebook post, Heald said, “many cruisers would order multiple sandwiches and food items and end up leaving 50% or more uneaten. We have all seen those plates outside of the cabin doors. So while it is not the only reason and it would be silly of me to say it was, trying to cut down on food waste is one of the reasons these nominal fees now apply after breakfast time. “

This could make complete sense, especially considering Carnival’s rock-bottom prices for many of its sailings over the past year. Guests booking these heavily discounted prices, sometimes as low as $25 per person, might be more likely to order tons of free food and not eat it.

Perhaps Carnival’s strategy of packing the ships full of people at low fare is coming back to haunt them. From onboard brawls to reports of hour-long waits for late-night pizza (the only food venue now open late at night), it seems that the recent Carnival experience is different than the pre-shutdown one, and not for the better.

Here's everything you need to know about room service on a cruise — such as what’s included, how to order, how to handle tipping, and more.

Can You Get Room Service on a Cruise?

Share this post:

If you’re new to cruising, you might be wondering whether cruise ships have room service like hotels do. The answer is yes! Not only are you able to order from room service menus during your voyage, but you’ll also pay way less than you would for most room service menu items on land (on many cruise lines it’s even free!).

Let’s jump into everything you need to know about cruise ship room service — such as what’s included, how to order, how to handle tipping, and more.

What You Need to Know About Room Service on a Cruise

What is room service on a cruise.

During a cruise, room service gives you the ability to order food and beverages right to your stateroom without having to go eat at a sit-down restaurant or pick up a snack from another spot on the ship. It’s perfect for when you want a lazy morning with breakfast in bed, want to enjoy a romantic dinner on your balcony, or are looking for some late-night snacks after an evening at the nightclub.

Princess Voyage of the Glaciers Alaska Cruise Review

After ordering, you’ll usually get an estimated time period for when you can expect your food to arrive. Once it’s ready, a crew member will bring it right to your cabin door. They’ll often bring the trays of food and drinks inside for you so you don’t have to carry them from the doorway.

What is included in cruise ship room service?

Each cruise line has its own unique menu, but overall you can expect room service on a cruise to include a selection of things like soups, salads, sandwiches, pizza, burgers, steak, chicken tenders and/or wings, and pasta.

Coffee, tea, milk, lemonade, juice, soda, and alcoholic beverages are also available, as are a selection of desserts. Keep in mind that, though room service is still available in the middle of the night, those hours may have a limited menu.

Continental breakfast, which is generally free even on lines that charge for other room service items, includes basic things such as cold cereals, toast, bagels, muffins, fruit, and yogurt. Coffee, tea, hot chocolate, juice, and milk are also continental breakfast staples.

Many cruise lines have additional breakfast items on the room service menu to choose from, which may or may not incur a fee. These include things like scrambled eggs and omelets, pancakes, French toast, oatmeal, breakfast sandwiches, bacon, sausage, and hash browns.

carnival cruises room service

How do you order room service on a cruise?

On most cruise lines, you can order room service via the telephone in your cabin. There’s a dedicated number to dial that will take you directly to the room service department. Here, you’ll place your order with a crew member and they’ll give you an estimated time that you can expect your food to arrive.

As cruise lines continue to add more capabilities to their stateroom TVs and smartphone apps, you may be able to order room service through those devices as well. It just depends on which cruise line and ship you’re sailing.

Breakfast, however, is usually done a bit differently. On most lines, room service breakfast must be ordered the night before; usually via a door hanger menu that’s placed outside on the door handle before you go to sleep.

On the menu, you choose the timeframe that you’d like breakfast delivered — usually they’re 30-minute windows. Then, you place a checkmark or number in the boxes next to each menu item you want and the quantity you’d like. Come morning, your breakfast should be delivered within your chosen time period. We recommend eating it in bed or, if you have a balcony, outside as the perfect way to welcome the day.

Breakfast room service is especially helpful if you want to maximize your sleeping time on a port day and eat as you get ready, or if you want to stay in bed as long as possible on a sea day without missing breakfast completely.

Rotterdam Naming Ceremony Cruise Review

Aside from breakfast, you may be wondering when you can order room service. The answer is anytime! Across the cruise industry, room service is pretty much available 24 hours a day.

How much do you tip room service on a cruise?

On some cruise lines, gratuity is automatically added into your room service charge (if room service is not free on that cruise line). In that case, don’t feel any pressure to add an additional tip — though on most lines you’ll be allowed to if you wish.

If room service is entirely free on your cruise line or an automatic gratuity is not included in the charge, how much you tip the crew member who brings your order is entirely up to you. Someone who orders two items might not feel the need to tip as much as someone who orders an entire smorgasbord of items for their four-person family plus drinks.

Tipping is not mandatory, but a good rule of thumb is to tip at least a few dollars. The exact amount is entirely up to you.

Is room service free on cruises?

The answer to this question depends on the cruise line; each brand handles the cost (or lack thereof) of room service differently. For a breakdown on room service by cruise line, read on.

Note: Basic continental breakfast menu items through room service are included on basically all cruise lines, so we aren’t factoring that into the ‘included’ and ‘cost’ sections below. As well, alcoholic beverages that are available through room service incur regular bar prices.

Carnival Cruise Line outlines strict boarding rule for passengers

G etting on a cruise ship takes a lot more effort than checking into a hotel: You have to go through security, have your passport checked, and check in at multiple stations.

People taking a cruise are, of course, really eager to get on board because the sooner you board, the sooner you can get something to eat, have your first drink or visit a pool.

Ships generally have a number of bars and restaurants open as soon as they start letting people board, which can be as early as 11 a.m. Boarding passengers have selected windows during which they're supposed to get on the ship.

Related: Carnival, Royal Caribbean rival makes big beverage package change

It varies by cruise line, but in some cases you can buy your way into the earliest boarding groups, while suite passengers on both Royal Caribbean ( RCL ) and Carnival get priority.

It's also possible, however, to get an early boarding time without spending any extra money, simply by checking in at the earliest possible date and selecting an early time.

If you board early, there's a catch: Your room won't be ready, and depending on whether you checked your luggage, you will have your carry-on bags with you and your luggage if you opted to walk it on yourself.

All cruise lines have slightly different rules for handling that luggage before rooms are opened to passengers (usually about 1:30 p.m. on Royal Caribbean and Carnival Cruise Line ( CCL ) ships).

Cruise-line baggage and room rules vary

Having a bag with you is an added burden and most people are eager to get their bags to their cabin. It's hard to fully enjoy yourself on a cruise ship when you're lugging around even a carry-on bag because that bag contains your passport and maybe a laptop as well as any medicine you might need.

Royal Caribbean does not allow nonsuite passengers to access their rooms until they are fully ready. People who buy the cruise line's The Key pass, which enables early access, can leave their bags at a designated spot on the ship for quick delivery to their rooms.

All other passengers must wait until the captain announces that the rooms are ready before making their way to their rooms. Once that happens, they can fully use their rooms, unpack, take a nap, or do whatever else they might like.

Royal Caribbean's Celebrity Cruises brand has a very different policy. All passengers are allowed to visit their cabins to drop off their bags. They are supposed to do that, then leave so the final cleaning can be done.

Carnival's namesake cruise line has a policy that falls somewhere between the two. The company's brand ambassador, John Heald, wants to make its policy very clear.

Carnival issues a plea to passengers

Carnival allows some, but not all, passengers to drop off their bags in their cabins before they have been opened. The cruise line allows people who have hit certain levels in its loyalty programs as well as suite passengers, and people who paid for its early boarding program, "Faster to the Fun," to drop their bags off in the cabin.

"Here is my almost monthly reminder to my friends, who are diamond, platinum, staying in a suite, or have Faster to the Fun," Heald wrote. "You can go directly to your cabin to drop off your carry-on bags." Once they've done that, Heald asks that those passengers leave their rooms so they can be fully and properly cleaned.

The cruise line wants passengers who have reached those levels, or paid for more expensive rooms, to have this added convenience, but it doesn't want passengers interfering with the cleaning process.

"I’ve been dealing with five different guests who have all had some kind of confrontation with the crew regarding this," Heald added. "Some have tried to have a shower, some have tried to unpack, and one gentleman literally decided to show his loyalty card very close up to the housekeeping staff demanding she leave the cabin, which was yet to be prepared because 'he needed to take a nap."

Princess Cruises Rolls Out Fleetwide Dining Revolution: Traditional, Reservable, Open Seating, and Anywhere Service Now Available for Every Guest Preference

New options follow successful debut aboard new sun princess.

FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla., (April 13, 2024) – Princess Cruises today announced it is making a significant enhancement to the main dining options found across its fleet, designed to give guests the ultimate in flexibility and choice when it comes to their dining experience by offering three table service options – Traditional, Reservable, or Walk-in Anytime - coupled with the brand’s industry exclusive OceanNow location-based “anywhere” service.

With a dedication to personal preference and individualized service, Princess will designate separate dining rooms aboard every ship in the fleet* to the three table service options – one dedicated to traditional dining offering an early and a late seating every evening; one offering reservable dining times; and a third with open seating to support walk-ins anytime.  The three table service options integrate with the line’s unparalleled OceanNow, which provides guests the convenience of ordering anything, anytime, and receiving it anywhere onboard, making Princess uniquely positioned to accommodate all guest dining preferences.

Making all dining formats available fleetwide follows the resounding success of this new approach already implemented aboard the new Sun Princess.  With the stunning introduction of the new next level Love Boat came the debut of three-story dining room with one floor dedicated to traditional dining, another serving guests with a flexible reservation and a third for anytime walk-ins.

“Our guests have been delighted with the dining flexibility aboard Sun Princess and we’re pleased to extend the concept to all the other ships in our fleet,” said Sami Kohen, Princess Cruises vice president of food and beverage.  “Now whether guests prefer an early seating every evening, or change things up every night, or even change their mind, these flexible dining options ensure that their dining preference is effortlessly accommodated.”

Starting on April 15, 2024, the new approach will launch on Princess voyages departing September 14, 2024 and beyond. To support these changes and the transition to the new system, main dining reservations that already have been made for voyages sailing September 14 and beyond for any ship except Sun Princess will be cancelled. Main dining reservations for guests sailing through September 13 will not be affected.

Starting June 17, booked guests will be able to use the app ahead of their voyage to opt for traditional seating in a dedicated dining room with the same waiter, same table and same time each night, or flexible dining, allowing them to enjoy dinner at any available time and table size of their choosing in either the Reservable or Open Seating dining rooms.

This change does not affect guests booked in specialty dining restaurants or suite or reserve collection accommodations, who enjoy a dedicated dining room on Princess ships, where no reservations are required.
