The following wineries can be found on or just off of St Helena Highway (aka Route 29/128), from south to north.

Sequoia Grove

8338 St Helena Hwy, Rutherford

(707) 944-2945

Why Guests Love It: Classic Cabernets, Boutique Feel, Food & Wine Pairings

Sequoia Grove is almost the little engine that could in Napa, not because it’s any less mighty but because it’s lowkey and relaxed. It’s definitely worth stopping in, though, because the wood-timber building surrounded by sequoias and cypresses gives a distinctive Northern Californian feel. Everything produced is fantastic but take note of the quintessential cedar notes in their Cabs. They’re a standout.

Grgich Hills

1829 St Helena Hwy, Rutherford

(707) 963-2784

Why Guests Love It: Historical Winery, Picnic Tastings, Eco-Focused

Named after its founders, Mike Grgich and Austin Hills, Grgich Hills is one of the more legendary wineries in Napa. Founded in 1977, it has consistently produced stellar wines to be tasted in an equally stellar stone building. Bonus: As of 2006, it uses only estate-grown fruit from its organic, biodynamic, and solar powered winery.

Corison Winery

987 St Helena Hwy, St Helena

(707) 963-0826

Why Guests Love It: Critically Acclaimed Wines, Female Winemaker, Vineyard Views

True trailblazers seem in short supply these days but thankfully Cathy Corison is still here. Year in and year out, she crafts award-winning Cabs from specific vineyard designations. She also produces a stunning Gewürztraminer and Riesling, both of which sing when paired with food. Be sure to snap up what you can because her wines consistently sell out.

401 St Helena Hwy South, St Helena

(707) 967-2626

Why Guests Love It: Stunning Artwork, Female Winemaker, Exceptional Wines

If the whimsical rabbit sculpture isn’t enough to make you stop, the wines most certainly will! Kathryn Hall comes by her craft genetical, having worked in her family’s vineyards north in Mendocino before striking out on her own. And although the Cabs are fabulous, cross the varietal line and taste their Merlots. You’ll be wowed.

The Salon at Heitz Cellar

436 St Helena Hwy, St Helena

(707) 963-2047

Why Guests Love It: Historical Winery, Cheese & Charcuterie Boards, Age-Worthy Wines

Heitz has been around since 1961 – yes, you read that correctly. Everything about Heitz speaks to tradition, from the vineyard selections to the woodblock-esque labels. It’s worth stocking up here and laying some down to age because Heitz is known to develop beautifully for years.

Freemark Abbey

3022 St Helena Hwy N, St Helena

(800) 963-9698

Why Guests Love It: Historical Winery, Stunning Architecture, Library Wines

Housed in a historic stone building that dates back to 1899, Freemark Abbey has consistently been a winery for over a century (except that during that little hiccup known as Prohibition). It further cemented its name in oenological history by being one of only twelve wineries invited to compete in the 1976 Judgement of Paris. Today, the wines remain standouts and tasting here brings guests on a trip through Napa history.

Sterling Vineyards

1111 W Dunaweal Lane, Calistoga

(800) 726-6136

Why Guests Love It: Breathtaking Views, Tram Rides, Award Winning Wines

Sterling Vineyards unfortunately sustained significant damage during the Glass Fire of 2020 and has since been undergoing reconstruction. The good news for everyone is that it is due to reopen in the Spring of 2023! Sterling has been a longtime favorite because of the stunning views. Plan ahead to book a tour that includes a tram ride to the top of the vista point and sip through their lineup. It’s worth the wait.

Tank Garage Winery

1020 Foothill Blvd, Calistoga

(707) 942-8265

Why Guests Love It: Art Deco Architecture, Intriguing Wines, Small Production

Of all wine tasting experiences through Napa, Tank Garage is probably the most unique because it’s located in a 1930s Art Deco gas station! Tank isn’t for the faint-of-heart – the people there are known for sprinkling salty language around, but they sure provide a fun experience. The wines are just as interesting with everything from orange pét-nat to carbonic Grenache.

Larkmead Vineyards

1100 Larkmead Lane, Calistoga

(707) 942-0167

Why Guests Love It: Outdoor Patio, Warm Customer Service, Bordeaux-style Wines

Top Napa Wineries along the Silverado Trail

Silverado Trail runs somewhat parallel to St Helena Highway on the east side of Napa. The two are close enough together to make it very easy to toggle between, but Silverado is decidedly quieter because village centers are found on St Helena Highway.

(707) 944-9261

Why Guests Love It: Wine Cave, Outdoor Terrace, Exceptional Reds

Located in Napa Valley’s prestigious Stags Leap District, Baldacci Family Vineyards is a family-owned estate renowned for its exceptional wines. These exquisite wines come from some of Napa Valley’s most celebrated vineyards, including estate-owned plots in Stags Leap District, Calistoga, and Diamond Mountain District. The portfolio also features a variety of red blends, sparkling wines, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and a late harvest Gewürztraminer.

The Estate House in Stags Leap District offers an intimate and educational wine tasting experience, set in a luxurious and welcoming environment. Baldacci Family Vineyards provides a perfect blend of sophistication and hospitality, making it a must-visit destination for any wine enthusiast.

8383 Silverado Trail, Napa

(707) 963-5188

Why Guests Love It: Beautiful Views, Organic Farming, Warm Hospitality

Although technically in another town, ZD is just down the road from Mumm and is definitely worth the stop. While ZD may be smaller than some of the huge Napa wineries, it is no less impressive and produces rich, luscious wines that manage to maintain perfect balance. Taste through the lineup, or book a tour with sample of library wines.

Quixote Winery

6126 Siverado Trail, Napa

(707) 944-2659

Why Guests Love It: Quirky Atmosphere, Estate Tours, Food & Wine Pairings

And now for something completely different! To experience Quixote Winery is to experience a quirky, carnivalesque atmosphere while tasting through intriguing, small production wines. All fruit sourced from Stags Lead District, their wines sell out quickly so be sure to stock up while you can.

Clos du Val Winery

5330 Silverado Trail, Napa

(707) 261-5212

Why Guests Love It: Stunning Views, Creative Events, High End Hospitality

Clos du Val is nestled back among the vines, providing a picturesque experience for visitors. Book a tasting in advance, or check out events like Apéro nights, or sparkling wine brunches. No matter what you try, you’ll love the attention to detail that weaves through both the wines and the estate.

4240 Silverado Trail, Napa

(707) 257-2345

Why Guests Love It: Stunning Architecture, Luxurious Pairings, Exceptional Service

Darioush is sort of like Madonna or Cher in that it needs no other name: Darioush is enough. And, for those that know it, the name Darioush means opulence and grandeur unlike anything else in Napa. Grounded in Persian culture, hospitality is elevated to an art form here. Be sure to reserve the Signature Mezza tasting to try the wines alongside traditional Persian mezze plates.

Judd’s Hill Winery & MicroCrush

2332 Silverado Trail, Napa

(707) 255-2332

Why Guests Love It: Small Production, Family Owned, Relaxed Environment

Judd’s Hill is an anomaly in Napa because it’s lowkey and very hands on. Still family owned, guests are encouraged to book tastings, pairings, or even play winemaker and blend their own wines! Another charming experience is their annual poetry contest, for which winners receive a 3-liter bottle but the real prize is being part of this 20+ year tradition.

Travel Logistics: Getting To and Around Napa

Napa the city is towards the southern end of Napa the valley and is only about an hour north of San Francisco. Visitors coming from further afield can fly to either San Francisco International Airport or Oakland International Airport and drive from there. Since it is a quick jaunt from the Bay Area, it tends to be very busy on the weekends so midweek tastings often are the most relaxing (and available). You can check current flight deals into either airport right here.

Napa is also quite close to Sonoma Valley, which runs parallel on the west. However, mountain passes between the two are often very windy and can be quite dangerous to navigate, particularly at night. We recommend focusing on one valley or the other to fully enjoy the experience. Another great option is to leverage Green Dream Tours’ expertise to get a taste of both Napa and Sonoma on the same day. They offer round-trip transport from San Francisco, stopping at some exceptional boutique wineries in Sonoma and Napa.

7 of the Best Wineries in Napa Valley with Free Tastings

Napa Valley, California, truly is God’s country. The climate is incredible, and it’s the absolute perfect weather for growing grapes. Where there are grapes, there’s wine. This is one of the most popular reasons to visit Napa Valley . It’s also a good thing to try before you buy, and if you’re looking for some of the best tastings available at some of Napa Valley’s wineries, here are seven to stop by for a drink. Better yet, the tastings are free! So you’ll only break the bank if you purchase a bottle – or bottles! Read on for some of the best bargains at award-winning wineries in Napa Valley.

1. Sutter Home Winery

Although this winery is synonymous with grocery store brands today, it has long been on the cutting edge of introducing wines to the United States.

2. Heitz Wine Cellars

This winery is a wonderful place to learn about history. It’s been open since the 1960s and has kept up with the times, but if you’d like to know the story of Napa Valley while enjoying a free wine tasting like in the Napa of yesteryear, this is the place.

3. Homage Vineyard

This popular micro-winery is a must-do for Cab Sauv enthusiasts. It’s one of the most personal wine-tasting experiences, as you enjoy your tasting in the home of the winery owners.

4. Buehler Vineyards

This is one of the most out-of-the-way wineries in Napa Valley, but getting there is its reward. The Buehlers built this vineyard back in the 70s, and this sprawling winery covers over 300 acres. Despite the time it takes to get out here, the delicious wines available at the end of your journey mean that you won’t be disappointed.

5. August Briggs Winery

The tastings available here at August Briggs are $10 but waived with any purchase, making the tastings technically free. Many wineries offer a waiver if you purchase something but the prices are usually far higher, which makes this winery a good choice if you’re looking for free tastings.

6. Vincent Arroyo

Vincent Arroyo is an example of a true entrepreneur. He created this vineyard out of the ranch originally on the grounds. Although Vincent used to do all of the work on his own, he now has help, and the family still runs the winery. Vincent’s signature Petit Sirah is an unforgettable wine.

7. Neal Family Vineyards

The same family has owned this vineyard for four decades. They are passionate and committed to winemaking as a tribute to the owner’s father. This is also a winery with interest in sustainable agriculture, so if you’re an eco-tourist, this is a great destination for you.

These are a few of the quickly-vanishing free tastings at wineries in Napa Valley. Check to make sure the free tastings are still offered as things change fast! Otherwise, enjoy some of Napa Valley’s best wines.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Clif Family (@cliffamily)

Located in St. Helena, Clif Family offers small production Napa Valley wines as well as olive oil, savory nut mixes, fruit preserves, spices and chocolates. If the name sounds familiar, it’s because it is the same people who created the Clif Bar. For cycling fans they also offer bike rentals on site as well as a Bruschetteria food truck where you can have a snack or lunch. For $50 you can partake in their seasonal red and wine tasting which runs about one hour.

2.  Louis M Martini

Louis M Martini

What was formerly a large, industrial 1930s warehouse has been fully renovated and reopened as a tasting center. Head to the counter and choose an experience that suits your mood and your budget. The Crown Bar is open daily and offers a tasting for groups of 1-6 for $50. Other options include spending time in the beautifully landscaped park, an underground cellar tour or a food pairing in the clubby Heritage Lounge.

3.  Gamling & McDuck

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Gamling & McDuck (@gamlingandmcduck)

Named for its owners' nicknames (two sommeliers turned winemakers from Minnesota), Gamling & McDuck is in its tenth harvest making cabernet franc and chenin blanc. The artsy and funky tasting room is lots of fun, even if their critically acclaimed wines are serious. Their classic wine tasting experience can be booked for parties of 1-8, where you get to taste five wines for $35.

4.  Alpha Omega Collective

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Alpha Omega Collective (@alphaomegacollective)

Downtown Napa is filled with tasting rooms and the Alpha Omega Collective is popular with locals. Drop by anytime from 11am until 6:30pm to taste wines from Napa, San Luis Obispo and Spain. The signature flight is $50. If you’re feeling peckish, snag a table and order from the menu of Pennington Provisions or from The Dutch Door around the corner. Fried chicken and chardonnay, anyone?

5.  Ackerman Family Vineyards

At the Ackerman Heritage House, a  fully restored 1888 Queen Anne Victorian located downtown on a quiet side street, there are a variety of different tours and tastings, but for walk-ins, the wine tasting salon, also known as the aviary, is open Thursday through Sunday from 10am until 5pm. Here you can try three small-production time-intensive aged wines—a sauvignon blanc, a red blend and a cabernet sauvignon—for $55. After, enjoy a bottle on the idyllic garden patio.

6.  Artesa

Artesa

Views of the bay, plenty of outdoor seating and stunning pyramid architecture, not to mention the wines, make Artesa worthy of a stop. Located in the Carneros region that straddles Napa and Sonoma, it’s just minutes from both cities. Owned by a Spanish company, the winery makes cooler climate wines including albariño, sparkling, rose, chardonnay, pinot noir and other reds. Wine tastings are available and bookings are recommended, including the 75-minute terrace sitting for $60 pp (takes groups of up to eight).

7.  Tank Garage Winery

Tank Garage Winery

Inside the restored filling station at the intersection of Highway 128 and the main drag in Calistoga is a winery tasting room. With a rock and roll vibe, this quirky winery never produces the same wine twice so every visit is an opportunity for exploration and discovery. Pony up to the lubrication bar for the affordable $30 wine tasting, available for walk-ins daily. In addition, weekdays from 3–6pm glasses of wine are available for purchase. The wines are affordable and one tasting fee is waived for every three bottles purchased.

Frequently Asked Questions

August through October, which coincides with the harvesting season, is the best time to visit Napa Valley . March through May is also a nice, often less-crowded time to visit.

The best Napa wine tours start at around $120 per person; fees will increase depending on tour inclusions (such as meals, gratuities and tastings). Prices may also fluctuate based on tour group size as well as the time of year and day of week.

Yes, it is recommended that you tip both your tour guide and your tasting host at each vineyard. Some tours include gratuities in rates, which may be something you want to look for when booking your tour.

None of the wineries have a dress code, so opt for casual (but not too casual) and comfortable. Think flowy sundresses, wide leg pants, khaki shorts or pants, dark jeans and nice tops (blouses, collared shirts) with sandals or sneakers. You'll also want to bring a light jacket as it can get chilly on some of the vineyards, even in the summer.

Amanda Norcross has previously traveled to Napa Valley, visiting select wineries on her own and also with a tour. She always recommends a tour, not just for a designated driver with a local's perspective, but also because you get to meet and imbibe with other fun and interesting tourgoers along the way. The 10 Best Napa Valley Wineries To Visit

CWA Staff [April 2024]

The Napa Valley Winery Sign Best Wineries To Visit

Contributions by Igor Sill

[ Editor's Note : We update our list of the Best Napa Valley wineries once per year. The updates are based on feedback from our Facebook fans, our review of Yelp and Trip Advisor data, and our network of Napa Valley winery travel experts like our partners at The Priority Wine Pass . We will provide a list of wineries from prior years below the list of our current top 10]

Readers often ask us, "What are the best Napa Valley wineries to visit?" This isn't an easy question to answer because there are so many excellent wineries. Some people prefer the small boutique or "micro" wineries, some are looking for a winery that focuses on their favorite wine style or varietal , while others want a lively venue with many amenities like restaurants, shops, and art galleries.

Our list is a starting point for your exploration of this globally revered wine region. Please don't stop exploring. You may find that your own list of the best Napa Valley wineries differs from ours. That is the fun of exploring the valley!

No other wine region on the planet draws as much attention or visitors as Napa Valley . It's visited by five million people every year, making it the second most visited tourist destination in California (Disneyland is # 1).  Perfect for a day or weekend trip from San Francisco, Napa Valley will award you with beautiful scenery, exceptional wineries, and world-renowned wines.

For many San Francisco Bay Area tourists, the opportunity of tasting exceptional quality wines is an absolute must.  Napa's soil, gentle climate, and growing conditions (terroir) make for ideal grapes, coveted by wine enthusiasts everywhere.

What To Expect When Visiting The Wineries Of Napa Valley

Napa Valley contains well over 400 wineries , most of them welcoming guests with tours, wine education, and tasting rooms. While enticing, the sheer number of winery options can be overwhelming.  In this article, I've focused on wineries that offer excellent wines, rich history, and informative and entertaining adventures.

Wine is not to be feared, though at first, it can seem daunting.  A knowledgeable wine tender can erase those fears while guiding your pallet to an enjoyable and memorable experience on your very first visit.  If you are a first-time visitor, you may wish to consider picking the right time of year to visit.

Napa wineries receive guests on an appointment-only basis, so always call ahead, or visit their website for availability.  Also, note that Napa zoning restrictions preclude picnic eating at all but a couple of Napa estates, so hold off on that picnic basket.

Expect to be charged a fee for the tour or tasting, but given the amount of information garnered and the quality of wines poured, along with the beautiful and stylish settings, these visits are an incredible bargain.

When Is The Best Time To Visit Napa Valley

The best times to visit Napa are during the Spring and Fall seasons, meaning April to early June and then September to October time frames.   Early fall is our "crush" period when wineries are harvesting their grapes.  If you want to experience a winery in action, come in the Fall.  The other optimal time is early Spring (late February to March) when the Valley's mustard plants are all in full, brilliant yellow bloom.

How We Picked The Best Napa Wineries

Since acquiring my own Napa Valley vineyard some 28 years ago, I've gotten acquainted with and toured most of the popular wineries, with numerous repeat visits amongst my favorites.  My recommendations, supported by researching 3,000+ yelp.com reviews, for the best, as well as the hidden gems, are from my own first-hand experience of their hospitality, exceptional wines, the facility's ambiance, history & beauty, the wine tasting experience, and the memories that linger long after the visit is over.

Excellent wines are certainly appreciated, however, the entire experience that a winery and its staff provide leaves its guests wanting to return.  Wineries achieve a first-class status when their staff enjoys greeting people, are extraordinary experts in their fields and are capable of conveying their knowledge in a friendly, fun, and understandable fashion.  Life is way too short for lousy wine and a mediocre time.  And so, with the help of yelp.com reviews, here are 10 of my favorite wineries with tastings and tours that are open to the public.

Of course, this list only scratches the surface. Napa has dozens of other wineries worth noting, such as Beaulieu, Cakebread, Clos Pegase, Ehlers, Mondavi, Pine Ridge, Shrader, and Silver Oak to name a few.

V.sattui winery.

St Helena, Napa (www.vsattui.com) :  This is the most popular and most visited winery in all of Napa. The winery was recently awarded a "best innovative winery tourism" designation. Making it one of only 10 wineries in the world to earn this distinction.

It's a top favorite because they offer old-world charm, 80 different varietals of wines, champagne, ports, vast picnic grounds, personalized tours, a legendary Italian deli with fresh foods, cheeses, and friendly, well-trained staff.   It's one of the few wineries that consistently wins top awards for all of its wines.

Brooks Painter , the head winemaker at V. Sattui, received the Winemaker of the Year award two times.  The main tasting room is as close to a party as you’ll get in the often seriously snobby Napa.  Those who want to learn and talk about terroir  while indulging in aficionado conversations about serious wines should go to their Vittorio tasting room (Tower).

There's always a party going on at this winery because it's always packed with visitors, frequent BBQs, special events, entertainment, and Spring weddings.  This winery has a full-time executive food pairing chef, Stefano Masanti, who creates phenomenal wine and food pairing events.

It's also a great spot to relax with their wines while enjoying a family lunch on their picnic grounds.  V. Sattui is a family, dog-friendly winery where you'll see children having a great time as well.  This is truly a wonderful and gorgeous place to spend your day.

Hours are 10-5 daily with reservations required for most tastings and tours.  Click here to make a reservation at V. Sattui.

Darioush Winery

Oak Knoll, Napa I made reservations for 4 at Darioush Winery for a flight of 5 wines hosted tasting on a busy Saturday afternoon @ $150 per person. We arrived a bit early and drove up that beautiful long driveway at the base of Atlas Peak off of Silverado Trail. We were graciously greeted as we approached the entry by Mark, a very friendly concierge who checked us in with a smile and served us a wonderful Russian River Chardonnay .

Mark quickly guided us inside to a waiting living room setting in front of a massive fireplace graced by Persian columns. Mark then introduced us to our host, Derek, who engaged us with a bit of history behind Darioush's founder, Darioush Khaledi, who achieved the American dream by immigrating to the US from Iran following the Islamic revolution and started what turned out to become the largest family-owned grocery business in Los Angeles.

He then founded Darioush in 1997 to bring the opulent architecture, rich culture, arts, and wines of the famed royal city of Persepolis to Napa. And, that he has done. The winery is amazingly impressive, with Persepolis columns framing the entrance with a royal palace setting inside.

Our 5 wines were served paired perfectly with artisan cheeses and nuts. We tasted 2 Syrahs, a Merlot, a Cabernet Sauvignon, and lastly, the Darioush Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve. All were luscious and superbly outstanding. Darioush himself walked over, introduced himself, and welcomed us to his winery with genuine and gracious hospitality, making us feel like royalty.

Derek then invited us downstairs where we toured Darioush's personal wine collection cellar, filled with first-growth Bordeaux wines, in the style of Haut-Brion, Chateau Latour, Chateau Margaux (one of my personal favorites), Chateau Lafite, and Mouton Rothschild, including a bottle of 1942 Chateau Lafite Rothschild--reportedly one of only 2 left in the world. Derek then pulled out a wine thief and proceeded to extract tastings for each of us from a cellar French oak barrel of Cabernet Sauvignon, yet to be bottled or released.

It was truly outstanding and, though a bit young, will clearly be brilliant in a few years. Overall, we tasted 7 lovely wines and were graced with an unforgettable wine-tasting experience in one of Napa's absolutely finest wineries. Without question, it's an exceptional and memorable experience, worthy of 6 Yelp stars (5 is the max)!

Chateau Montelena

Calistoga, Napa (www.montelena.com): Chateau Montelena thrust itself onto the world's stage in 1976 as its 1973 Chateau Montelena Chardonnay, crafted by winemaker Mike Grgich, took first place at the famed " Paris Tasting ” beating France’s best white Burgundies.

While their Chardonnay continues to be one of the most age-worthy Chardonnays produced in California, their Bordeaux style Cabernet Sauvignon now occupies the winery's focus these days.  With its impressive old-world stone chateau, the unusual Chinese grounds with a lake, and the enchanting, if not small, greeting room, it certainly delivers a memorable wine-tasting experience. Though the picnic grounds are reserved for Wine Club members only, visitors are welcome to meander around and take in the sites.

Inglenook Winery

Rutherford, Napa(www.inglenook.com) : One of the original Napa wineries, the elegant, ivy-covered Inglenook was founded by a Finnish sea captain and Wine Connoisseur, Gustave Niebaum in 1879.  Gustave was passionate about making fine wines in small quantities.

In 1975, Francis Ford Coppola acquired the winery from the Niebaum family and spent considerable time, money, and energy restoring it back to its magnificent original splendor.  It has since been known by several names, ala Niebaum-Coppola, Coppola, and Rubicon until 2011, when Francis Ford Coppola acquired the Inglenook trademark, paying more, he said, than he had paid for the entire estate.

He has since, restored the historic name Inglenook to the estate so that it remains a true crown jewel of Napa Valley.  Tours are by appointment and definitely worthwhile so that you can appreciate these amazing grounds.

Domaine Carneros

Napa, CA (domainecarneros.com)  Founded by the noble French family behind Champagne Taittinger, this majestically grand château is a splendid way to enjoy the Carneros Appellation of Napa.

This stunning, fairy-tale château was modeled after an 18th-century French mansion owned by Taittinger. Carved into the hillside below the winery are exceptional sparkling wines reminiscent of those crafted by Taittinger, using estate-grown Los Carneros grapes.  The estate is located in the southern part of Napa Valley near the cooler climate of San Pablo Bay. There are 3 terraces from which you can enjoy breathtaking views while sipping extraordinary Sparkling and Pinot Noir wines.

If you elect to take a tour, you’ll experience a behind-the-scenes look at how sparkling wines are produced, from the vineyards through to the bottling process. The tour culminates with a sampling of wines paired with an array of artisan cheeses, gourmet caviar, smoked salmon, and charcuterie while seated in the Louis XV–inspired salon or on the terrace overlooking the vineyards. This is one of the best Napa wineries if you love bubbles.

Reservations are required. 1240 Duhig Road. Napa, CA 94559. (707) 257-0101, email: [email protected] . Tasting Hours: 10:00 AM-5:30 PM

Miner Family Winery

Oakville, Napa Just north of Yountville, Miner Family Winery offers a wide range of varietals to sample from vineyards distributed throughout some of California’s best wine-growing regions. They began as a custom crush outfit before owner Dave Miner started his own label in 1996. Sourcing fruit from nine different vineyards allows them room to explore a spectrum of styles, and it allows you to taste a full portfolio of California wine. Saddle up at the bar for a taste of Napa Valley, Santa Lucia Highlands, Mendocino, or the Sierra Foothills. No reservation is required for parties of six or fewer, $25 tasting fee. The fee is waived for members of the Miner wine club and 3 guests.

Ladera Vineyards

ladera winery

Calistoga, Napa Situated on Howell Mountain, Ladera Vineyards offers a more historical look at Napa’s first sub-appellation. The three-story stone winery building was completed in 1886, and the Stotesbery family finished restoring it in 2005. At 1,600-1,800 feet,

Ladera’s vines are untouched by the marine layer that settles on the Napa Valley floor. This is a home of big, but fairly-priced cabernet sauvignon. Arrive hydrated and ready to turn your teeth purple. By appointment only,

Spottswoode Winery

St Helena, Napa Spottswoode is a true family-owned historic winery on the west side of St Helena in the Napa Valley.  Established in 1882 by George Schonewald, the estate is distinguished by the historic Victorian home portrayed on its wine labels.  Owner Mary Novak established the winery in 1982, and it is managed by her daughters Beth Novak Milliken, its President & CEO, and Lindy Novak, who runs the winery's wholesale marketing program.

The family produces a small portfolio of 3 delicious varietals, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and a minuscule amount of Syrah.  Their hospitality and tasting rooms are in a quaint Victorian farmhouse nestled amongst the vines. Tastings are available on Mondays through Fridays. You must request a tasting reservation on the Spottswoode website . It's a good idea to make your request 3 or more months before your visit to Napa.

Phone (707) 963-0134 or email [email protected] to make a reservation.

Stag's Leap Wine Cellars

napa visit best winery

Oakville, Napa (www.cask23.com) : Founded in 1970 by Warren Winiarski, this winery brought international acclaim to Napa Valley winemaking when their 1973 Cabernet Sauvignon won the famous 1976 "Judgment of Paris" tasting.  A bottle of 1973 Stag's Leap Wine Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon was inducted into the Smithsonian National Museum in 1996 as a result of being awarded first in this competition and to reflect the impact that the achievement had on the US wine industry.

The winery's remodeled facilities provide floor-to-ceiling views of its vineyards as its centerpiece.  The winery's cave "is the moral center of the universe" according to founder Warren Winiarski.  He installed an amazing floor-to-ceiling Foucault pendulum at the center of the vaulted caves. It's an awesome sight to behold as it swings methodically.

The winery was sold to a joint venture by Chateau Ste Michelle and Marchesi Antinori in the summer of 2007. Reservations are accepted Monday through Friday from 10 AM to 4:30 PM at [email protected] or (707) 261-6410

Turnbull Wine Cellars

Oakville, Napa ( https://www.turnbullwines.com/visit-us/ ) Turnbull feels like the very essence of modern-day Napa. From the perfectly executed design of the tasting facilities to the dedication to sustainability in both farming and winemaking, Turnbull feels like the best of Napa.

You can select a few different tasting options here. The Private Estate Tasting is an amazing experience. You can taste through reserve wines in the comfort of the Turnbull "living room" with a wine educator. Or you can opt for the more traditional Gallery Tasting. Taste the current Turnbull releases at an elegant bar with beautiful views of the valley around you.

Castello di Amorosa

Calistoga, Napa (www.castellodiamorosa.com)  Castello di Amorosa knows how to make a huge first impression.  Set on a Calistoga knoll, this authentically styled, 13th Century Tuscan castle winery is unlike any other you'll visit.  It took some 15 years for owner Dario Sattui (founder of V.Sattui Winery) to construct it and has all the elements you'd expect from an authentic Italian castle, such as a moat with a drawbridge, high stone walls, gargoyles, a church, and fully equipped torture chamber.  The castle winery produces hand-crafted Italian

Beringer vineyards.

St Helena, Napa (www.beringer.com):

Beringer winery one of the best napa wineries to visit

Another historic Napa winery that was featured at number three on our 2016 list dates back to 1875 when brothers Jacob and Frederick,  German immigrants, established this winery.  Once there, they planted the beautiful "Tunnel of Trees" (1885) that still adores Highway 29 in front of their winery.  They built the elegant Rhine House where they once lived as well as the grand stone winery building, and hand-dug the wine caves.  The lush landscaping surrounding the ornate Rhine House gives you a sense of what Napa used to be like in those days.  Last year, Mark Beringer,

Last year, Mark Beringer, great-great-grandson of founder Jacob Beringer joined the winery as its Chief Winemaker.  Beringer offers a 30-minute tour that guides one through the Old Winery and historic tunnels, winding up in the iconic Rhine House mansion with a wine tasting that includes a selection of three wines.  Absolutely magical.

Peju Province

Rutherford, Napa (www.peju.com): This Napa winery was number 7 on our list last year. Peju offers more than 30 sustainably-farmed wines (some of which are exclusive to wine club members)  in their landmark tasting room tower.  They offer an amazing art collection gallery upstairs, pristine gardens, unique culinary events, reserve, and barrel tastings.  Their culinary wine experiences include hands-on cooking classes, chef's table lunches, as well as wine and food pairing education classes.  As you enter their grounds, you'll note a collection of carefully placed sculptures while roaming the manicured gardens.  This is a wonderful family deserving of their great yelp reviews.

[Editor's Note: We've received some feedback recently about the service at Opus One. We are keeping this on our list of Best Napa Wineries because of the history and wine quality. Please be aware the service is uneven at this point]

Oakville, Napa (www.opusonewinery.com)  This winery originated as the joint venture between  Robert Mondavi  and Baron Philippe Rothschild who teamed up to create this magnificent winery focused on producing a Bordeaux styled blend based on Napa Valley floor Cabernet Sauvignon. Opus One Winery delivers a luxurious wine experience. The estate is impressive, especially when driving down the center driveway to the winery entrance.  Looking out across Opus One's vineyards from the upstairs terrace, you immediately sense the beauty of Napa Valley.  This is a winery to just sit back, relax and absorb a wonderful glass of wine with the company of good friends.  It doesn’t get any more luxuriously sophisticated than this, so take plenty of pictures while there.  Constellation Brands acquired Robert Mondavi winery in 2004 and entered into a management agreement with Baron Rothschild to manage Opus One.  The

Andretti Winery

Oak Knoll, Napa (www.andrettiwinery.com) Andretti Winery is the perfect way to transport yourself to the "old world" without leaving the comfortable confines of Napa Valley. The winery was established in 1996 by one of the greatest race car drivers ever, Mario Andretti, and his good friend Joe Antonini, the ex-CEO of K Mart. They shared a passion for great wine and the joys of Italy's laid-back lifestyle. So they decided to make wine and entertain guests in Napa Valley.

We know...you are thinking that celebrity wineries can't deliver great wine. That is simply not the case here.

The winery they created is a reflection of their twin passions. On a visit to Andretti Winery, you will be treated to some best Italian varietal wine this side of Tuscany, along with wonderful French varietals. Combine that with the laid-back hospitality of the Andretti staff and you have one of the best wineries for first-time visitors to Napa Valley.

The winery offers an incredible array of wine-tasting experiences. Make sure you make a reservation in advance. We recommend you enjoy a tasting with a food pairing, but any of their experiences is sure to please.

Our Previous Guests’ Experiences

Tripadvisor reviews.

We appreciated getting an overview of what to look for and expect on the following days. Paul was a great tour guide and really made the trip even more enjoyable.

The best part was driving around Napa in the open-air trolley and hearing our guide Richard give us facts about the land. It was interesting and very scenic. I can’t imagine doing a wine tour on a bus when you can do this instead!

Great way to see multiple wineries in one day without having to plan meals and all the visits ourselves. Wineries were great, food and wine were amazing, the trolley was a fun way to travel.

Definitely recommend it if you are visiting for the first time. It’s a great way to visit a few wineries worry-free!

Mallory Shull

This was my very favorite experience in Napa! The trolley was such a fun way to see more of Napa Valley and truly experience different wineries (and not worry about driving!! :-))

Best 3-Day Napa Itinerary for California Wine Country

Today I want to bring you my 3-day Napa itinerary for Northern California. This county near San Francisco is known for its world-class wines, beautiful scenery, and award-winning restaurants. With a few days or a long weekend, you can discover a lot of what this part of wine country has to offer visitors. I’ve included a Napa Valley map with all the places I recommend, too.

3 Day Napa Itinerary

3-Day Napa Itinerary

Napa Valley is located 50 miles northeast of San Francisco. The area is famous for its vineyards, which produce excellent Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, and other grape varieties. It’s also home to famous foodie towns like Yountville, cities like Napa, and hot springs in places like Calistoga.

It’s easy to visit Napa mid-week or drive up on a Friday and spend a long weekend in wine country. With 3 days in the area you can enjoy everything from tasting rooms to towns and vineyard views. This part of California shows off some of the best things the Golden State has to offer.

My itinerary covers a range of things to do and see. It’s equally useful for first-time visitors and those who have been to the area before. You can use it to get a feel for what you can do in 3 days in Napa and adjust it to fit your specific interests. You can also take a look at my full list of Napa itineraries for more inspiration.

Where to Stay in Napa

There’s no shortage of places to stay in Napa. From luxurious resorts to hotels and house rentals, you’re spoiled for choice when it comes to accommodation. Just keep in mind that Napa can be pricey, especially on weekends. Booking well in advance or traveling mid-week can help ensure you get a great place to stay and good value for money.

My top pick for accommodation in Napa is  Indian Springs . Set on 17 acres of land, this historic property in Calistoga is comprised of a unique collection of cottages, bungalows, and Mission Revival-style buildings.

One of the first spas in California, the landmark resort features a mineral swimming pool from 1910, thermal waters, mud baths, and more. It also has a restaurant serving cuisine made from local wine country produce.

Wine Grapes

I’ve stayed in one of the cottages here, and I loved its cozy feel and sense of history. The spa and pool were relaxing, and the whole one-of-a-kind experience was unforgettable.

If you want to soak in the springs and indulge in a wine country retreat, you can  book a room here . This is one of my favorite cool places to stay in California .

There’s lots of other good accommodation in this part of wine country, too. If you want to see more, you can find a place that fits your style here .

Vineyard view in Napa

After dropping off your bags or getting settled into your accommodation, there’s no better way to start your 3-day Napa itinerary than with some wine tasting. That’s what this part of Northern California is known for, after all.

Wine Tasting in Calistoga

Rivers-Marie Vineyards is a great place to do it. It’s conveniently located in Calistoga just a few minutes’ drive from Indian Springs . You can pre-book a guided experience, and when you arrive you’ll be awed by the breathtaking views of the Palisades from the glass-fronted tasting room.

As you enter, you’ll be welcomed and given an overview of the business. Owned by Thomas Rivers Brown and Genevieve Marie Welsh (hence the name Rivers-Marie), this place focuses on single-variety wines made to reflect the vineyard and vintage from which they come.

Calistoga Wine Tasting Room

After the introduction you’ll start a wine tasting. It’s a 90-minute custom-tailored tasting of five of their current vintage wines. Sitting at a table set with glasses and tasting notes, you’ll be able to sample everything from Chardonnay to Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon.

As you sip, your host will tell you about the different vintages, growing conditions, and flavor profiles of the wines. Rivers-Marie is all about Pinot, but given it’s located in Napa, the Cabs are delicious as well.

At the end you can buy a bottle or more to take home. If you’re like me, you’ll be pleasantly surprised to see what good value they are given Napa’s reputation for higher-than-average prices.

Calistoga, California View

Lunch in St Helena

After the tasting, continue your 3-day Napa itinerary by driving to lunch at Gott’s Roadside in St Helena. This beloved local chain is known for its retro diner atmosphere. It’s popular, so if you’re here on a weekend it’s a good idea to pre-order your food before you leave Rivers-Marie.

Gott’s serves California-inspired dishes using locally-sourced ingredients. The menu has everything from Baja fish tacos to classic burgers and chicken schnitzel sandwiches.

The restaurant has a big outdoor area with picnic tables that’s perfect for eating lunch al fresco on warm days. It’s the ideal place to fuel up and get ready for the next stop on your Napa itinerary.

St Helena Restaurant

Wine Tasting in Coombsville

From Gott’s it’s a 30-minute drive to the heart of Coombsville, an American Viticultural Area (AVA) in the Napa Valley just east of the city of Napa. Established in 2011, this less-visited part of Napa Valley covers a range of elevations. It’s known for its cooler, marine-influenced climate and red wines that are vibrant and pure-fruited with old-world elegance.

You can pre-book a tasting at Covert Estate, a secluded winery near an oak grove in the eastern hills of the Vaca Mountain Range. It offers sweeping views across the vineyards below.

Upon arrival, your host will hand you a glass of white and tell you about the winery. It’s owned by three families dedicated to the craft of winemaking.

Coombsville Winery Table

Your wine tasting will take place in an atmospheric cave hidden away in the hill. Its contemporary decor and windows into the barrels deeper underground will make you feel like you’ve stumbled upon one of Napa’s best-kept secrets.

As you settle in, you’ll learn about the wines and taste a range of Cabernet Sauvignons. Covert Estate uses traditional Bordeaux winemaking techniques combined with Californian creativity to produce wines that aim to be elegant, delicate, and distinctive in personality.

After the tasting, your host will show you through to the room with the barrels and fermentation tanks. You’ll be able to see the inner workings of the winery and learn more about Covert’s winemaking process here.

Napa Wine Cave

Spa in Calistoga

When you’re done with the tour, you can continue your 3-day Napa itinerary by driving back to Calistoga and spending the rest of the afternoon indulging in the spa or swimming in the pools at Indian Springs . From mud baths to hot springs, there’s a lot you can avail yourself of here.

If you don’t feel like getting wet, you can explore Calistoga. There’s plenty to see and do here. From the Old Faithful Geyser of California to the shops and cafes on and around Lincoln Avenue, it’s a great place to discover.

Alternatively, you can drive into the city of Napa and do some shopping. From home goods stores to clothing boutiques, you’ll be spoiled for choice when it comes to options for retail therapy.

Coombsville View

Dinner in Yountville

Whichever you choose, continue your 3 days in Napa by heading to dinner at Thomas Keller’s Bouchon Bistro in Yountville in the evening. This casual French-inspired restaurant is a great alternative to his impossible-to-get-into French Laundry (but you should still make reservations).

Bouchon Bistro is known for its fresh, seasonal ingredients and meticulous attention to detail in presentation. Whether you want the soupe du jour or oysters on the half shell, you can get it here. There’s also a great selection of wines.

The dining room will whisk you right off to France, too. With tile floors, wooden chairs, and white tablecloths, it has a classic bistro ambiance.

Bouchon Bistro

The next day, continue your 3-day Napa itinerary by waking up early for a special adventure. It’ll be worth it.

Hot Air Balloon Ride in Napa Valley

This morning you can go on a hot air balloon ride over Napa Valley. This is one of the most exciting things to do in wine country, and an early start means you’ll enjoy enchanting golden light and peaceful sounds as you start your aerial journey with a certified pilot.

You’ll get a bird’s-eye view of the famous vineyards and Mount Saint Helena as you soar between 1,000 and 3,000 feet above the ground. Depending on visibility, you might even get to see the San Francisco skyline and the mountains to the east.

Napa Hot Air Balloons

After ballooning, head into Yountville. As you’ll have seen from the night before, this town is famous for its food scene. Home to acclaimed restaurants, it attracts visitors from all over the world.

You can start with a walk around town. It’s small and easy to see on foot, and you’ll be able to take in everything from the famous Bouchon Bakery to The French Laundry and its garden.

When you get hungry, you can have lunch at La Calenda. This Mexican restaurant is part of Thomas Keller’s culinary empire, and it’s every bit as good as you’d expect from such a famous chef. The guacamole is divine, and the fish tacos go down a treat.

Guacamole and chips

Wine Tasting

After lunch, you can continue your 3-day Napa itinerary down the road at the RH Yountville compound. This place is a unique food, wine, art, and design concept in wine country.

You can pre-book a tasting at the wine vault. When you arrive you’ll be able to sit at one of the outdoor tables in the peaceful courtyard. For the next hour, you can taste wines from all over this part of Northern California and admire the creative design elements around you.

From the long table surrounded by trees to the outdoor fireplaces and landmark stone building, RH Yountville is a design lover’s dream.

RH Yountville Table

Wine Tasting in Napa Valley

When you finish, you can drive over to Napa’s Silverado Trail to get to your next wine tasting. This one is at Quintessa. It’s located on the eastern edge of Rutherford at the foot of the Vaca Mountains. Spanning 280 acres, this is not only a famous winery, but also a beautiful property.

You can pre-book a tour of the vineyard-covered hills and do a tasting of its famous red blend. You’ll be able to spend the late afternoon soaking up the sunshine and sipping some of California’s best wine as you do.

It’s worth booking the Private Quintessential Experience as a special treat. You’ll arrive at the winery and meet your host in the main tasting room. They’ll lead you outside to a golf cart and whisk you off through the sun-drenched vineyards. As you go, you’ll be treated to views over the hills and across Dragon’s Lake.

Quintessa wine tasting rooms

Soon you’ll arrive at a private pavilion nestled among moss-draped oak trees. Its contemporary floor-to-ceiling windows will frame a picture-pretty view over the vines and the Rutherford Bench district.

After you settle in at the table, you’ll learn about the winery as you taste two Illumination Sauvignon Blancs, two vintages of Quintessa (a Cabernet Sauvignon blend), and two barrel samples of future vintages.

Dinner in Napa Valley

From Quintessa, you can continue your 3-day Napa itinerary with a 10-minute drive to The Charter Oak restaurant in St Helena. This place is known for its wood-fired grill, and you can make a reservation for dinner on the leafy outdoor terrace.

Napa Restaurant

If you want to, you can start with cocktails. The drinks here are refreshing on warm evenings, and a nice break from the wine you’ll have been sampling throughout the afternoon.

Cocktails imbibed, you can dive into fluffy sourdough bread with house-cultured butter, wings, burgers, and grilled other fare. The food here is delicious, and it’s magical to dine under the tree canopy above.

Don’t forget to leave room for dessert. You can finish off your meal with the burnt vanilla soft serve with wild pecan oil. It’s been named one of the 10 best cold desserts in the Bay Area by the San Francisco Chronicle , and it lives up to its reputation.

Koji Eggplant

The next day you can spend the morning exploring Calistoga or getting spa treatments at Indian Springs before continuing your 3-day Napa itinerary with a tasting.

Wine Tasting in St Helena

This one is at a winery called Vice Versa in St Helena. It’s a 15-minute drive from Calistoga. You can pre-book an experience, and when you arrive you’ll be welcomed and given an overview of the winery.

Vice Versa was founded by Canadian Patrice Breton in 2003 after he worked alongside influential winemaker Paul Hobbs. The winery’s philosophy is all about balance, and Vice Versa’s winemaker keeps things simple and focused.

Winery in Napa

Before doing a tasting, you can go indoors to see the stainless-steel tanks where the wine is made. There you’ll learn more about the process and get excited for your first sip.

Said sip will happen in the tasting room, where a table will be set with glasses and food. You’ll enjoy a plate of fruit, crackers, and nuts as you start sampling the wines. You’ll get to try a range of Cabernet Sauvignons as you learn about the different vintages and growing conditions.

Lunch in Napa

From Vice Versa, you can continue your 3-day Napa itinerary with a drive to the city of Napa for lunch at Oxbow Public Market. This covered space is full of counters offering everything from crab cakes to cupcakes. If you’re like me, you’ll want to eat it all.

Oxbow Public Market in Napa

You can get lunch at one of the stalls, or head around the corner to eat at Model Bakery. This place is famous for its artisan breads, and you can order a sandwich and savor it at one of the outdoor tables.

If you didn’t explore the city of Napa on your first day in wine country, you can spend a bit of time browsing the city’s shops and boutiques before you leave. There are lots of good ones here.

When you’re done, continue your 3 days in Napa with a drive to Coombsville for a tasting at Palmaz Vineyards. This Napa Valley winery is known for its blend of tradition and technology. The tasting room is set in a unique 18-story underground winery cave complex, and you can take in the views over the vineyards before heading inside.

Napa Valley Winery

You can pre-book a private guided tour and tasting here. You’ll be greeted by your host and handed a glass of wine when you arrive. As you sip, you’ll head outside to learn about the winery and soak up the views.

Established by the doctor who invented the heart stent, Palmaz Vineyards is a 600-acre estate with 64 acres of vines that produce technology-driven vintages of everything from Cabernet Sauvignon to Muscat and Chardonnay.

After the introduction you’ll ride an elevator down into the caves. The maze of tunnels and domes carved into the rock at the base of Mount George is a feat of engineering. Your host will usher you into a domed room where fermentation tanks sit on a multi-level gallery befitting the winery’s gravity-flow system.

Napa Valley Wine Tasting Room

You can watch as all kinds of data about each tank is projected onto the ceiling. While you look up, your host will explain what the charts and graphs tell the team and how technology plays a leading role in Palmaz’s approach to winemaking.

After the tour you’ll make your way upstairs to a tasting room with a table laden with glasses and plates of hors d’oeuvres. From Riesling to Chardonnay and Cab, each wine will be paired with a small bite.

As you sip and nibble, your host will walk you through the tasting notes and answer your questions about the wines.

Napa Winery

Dinner in Napa

After the tasting, you can drive to dinner at Boon Fly Cafe at the Carneros Resort and Spa in Napa. Situated in a rustic-chic roadhouse, the restaurant has a casual atmosphere and great food.

This place is famous for its doughnuts, so you can see if you can take some with you for breakfast the next morning before you leave. Either way, dinner here is a fun way to end your 3 days in Napa Valley.

Non-Alcoholic Napa: 10 Things to Do in Napa Valley Without Wine

Last updated: December 8, 2021 - Written by Jessica Norah 43 Comments

Napa Valley without wine??!! While the Napa Valley is one of the great wine destinations of the world, there are plenty of things you can do in Napa Valley besides drink wine. Perhaps you are not drinking in Napa due to health, pregnancy, or spiritual reasons, or perhaps you are traveling with people under the age of 21.

Whatever the reason, there are a number of people who visit the Napa Valley without hitting up all the tasting rooms and wineries that fill up most people’s Napa Valley itineraries. I often visited the Napa Valley with someone who did not drink due to both health and personal reasons. So although we have visited a number of wineries and tasting rooms, we always sought out a lot of other wine-free activities as well.

Here is our guide to things to do in Napa Valley besides drink wine. We’ll share loads of things you can do in Napa without wine that include hiking, going hot air ballooning, exploring local art, doing fun factory tours, eating at world-class restaurants, and even relaxing in hot springs.

Napa Valley without wine

Table of Contents:

10 Things to Do in Napa Valley Besides Drink Wine

Here is our list of the top 10 things to do in Napa Valley without wine (listed in no particular order):

1. Attend A Performance

One of the best venues to check out a performance is the historic Napa Valley Opera House , which hosts plays, dance, and musical performances throughout the year. Another historic venue for a variety of live performances is the Uptown Theatre which is also located in Napa.

There are also a number of concerts, festivals, outdoor movies, and other events held at wineries and parks throughout the Napa Valley that are generally open to the public.  There are also several cinemas in the Napa Valley if you have a hankering for a new release movie.

To figure out what is going on during your visit, check out weekly event schedules online (such as at the Visit Napa Valley  or Napa Tourist Info websites) or in the printed weekly guides available at hotels, tourist information, and tourist sites throughout Napa.

2. Visit Wineries that Offer More Than Wine .

Let’s face it, most wine tasting rooms are generally cramped and not very interesting if you are not tasting or purchasing wine. So instead, especially if you have a mixed group with some wanting to drink and other not, visit wineries that have a little something extra to entertain those who are not drinking.

For instance, tour an Italian-style castle at Castello di Amorosa , take in panoramic views from an aerial tram at Sterling Vineyards , or enjoy a taste of Persia at Darioush .

Love art? Artesa , Clos Pegase , HALL ,  Hess Collection , Ma(i)sonry , and Mumm Napa Valley  are among the wineries that include public art. Go to Coppola for film memorabilia, Chateau Montelena to see the featured winery of the film Bottle Shock , Sattui for an Italian deli lunch on their shaded picnic grounds, or Spring Mountain Vineyards or Beringer for a look at Victorian mansions.

Other wineries have restaurants, food and wine pairings, or intensive educational tours about aspects of winemaking that might appeal to non-drinkers.

Castello di Amorosa things to do in Napa besides wine

3.  View Napa Valley from the Air

You can view the subtly dramatic views of the valley from the thrilling heights of a helicopter, hot air balloon, or even a glider. Just recently I took my first hot air balloon in Napa Valley as part of a bridal shower celebration and while pricey, it was a really fun morning and afforded some great photography opportunities. You can book a balloon ride online here .

Just note that weather can really affect whether balloons can go up so it is best to have a back-up day so you can reschedule if there are weather cancellations (this happened to us and we had to reschedule for another date).

There are a number of companies that operate helicopters ( Viator ,  Golden Gate Helicopters , Wine and Dine , Wine County Helicopters ), plane flights , hot air balloons ( Napa Valley Drifters , Viator ), and paragliding ( Crazy Creek Air Adventures & Gliding ) in the area so compare prices and value. You can also sometimes get good online deals, especially outside of peak season.

4. Take a Train Ride .

The Napa Valley Wine Train is a popular way to eat while seeing the area from restored antique train cars. While rides on the train can be combined with winery visits, they don’t need to be. But the wine train isn’t the only train in the area.

5. Eat your Way Through the Napa Valley

Second only to being a wine destination, the Napa Valley is a world-class foodie destination. As of 2018, there were 6 Michelin-starred restaurants in Napa Valley. There are also dozens of wonderful restaurants and eateries not mentioned in the guide.

If you are on a tight budget and still want to eat well in Napa, try stocking up on some gourmet goodies at the Oxbow Market or Dean & DeLuca and have yourself an upscale picnic at one of the public parks.

In addition to vineyards, the Napa Valley is also home to several olive oil producers, and some are open to the public for tastings, such as Round Pond , St. Helena Olive Oil Co ., and Long Meadow Ranch .

6. Learn About the History & Cultural Heritage of the Napa Valley

The Napa Valley Museum provides a perfect place to learn about the geological, historical, and cultural history of the Napa Valley.

A visit to the Hatt and Historic Napa Mill buildings allows you to walk around and get a real feel for the town’s agriculture and mining history. The Historic Napa Mill, located next to the river, is now home to a historic hotel and several retail shops and restaurants.

There is a colorful mosaic fountain by Alan Shepp behind the Napa General Store that depicts the history of Napa, including the bad and controversial history of the Napa Valley (e.g., Ku Klux Klan participation in the area).

A visit to the Bale Grist Mill —built in 1846—offers another peek into the rural heritage of the area and allows one to see a fully restored water-powered grist mill that can still grind grain today. Visitors can hike from the mill on the historic trail to Bothe-Napa Valley State Park , which features extensive picnic facilities and a number of trails. Other historic sites in the park include the site of the first church in the Napa Valley and the Pioneer Cemetery.

Interested in contemporary art in a historical and bucolic setting? Consider stopping by or booking a tour at di Rosa which includes contemporary art exhibits located both outdoors on their 200-acre property and inside a collection of historic and modern buildings.

7. Go Shopping

The Napa Valley is a great place for those who love specialty shops, as the valley is abound with little treasures. Great areas to check out are Main Street in St. Helena, downtown Napa, the Hatt Market in Napa, the Vintage 1870 shops in Yountville (also known as V Marketplace), and Lincoln Avenue in Calistoga.

For gourmet food items, head to Oxbow Public Market in Napa where a collection of vendors offer a bit of everything (e.g., olive oils, French crepes, cupcakes and ice cream, fresh local produce and cheese).

Napa Valley shopping generally comes along with a pretty price tag; however, Napa also happens to be home to the more wallet-friendly Napa Valley Premium Outlets which include a number of outlet stores, including Adidas, Barneys, Coach, Ann Taylor, J. Crew, Gymboree, Kenneth Cole, and Gap.

8. Take a Fun and Educational Factory Tour

Free tours and tastings are available at Jelly Belly   (candy), Anheuser-Busch   (beer), and SePay Groves Olive Oil in the city of Fairfield. All three factories are conveniently located really close together.

The Jelly Belly factory tour is an especially great activity for children, but be warned that lines can be long. We waited for almost an hour to take the 45-minute tour.

9. Soak in the Hot Springs or See the Famous Geyser

The town of Calistoga sits near natural mineral hot springs and is well-known for its spas and the local specialty of being immersed in hot volcanic ash known as a mud bath. There are a number of spas and resorts that offer massages, mud baths, pools, and relaxing soaks in hot mineral water, making the area a great place for a couples retreat or place to relax with a group of girlfriends.

In addition to the pampering, you can also visit California’s Old Faithful Geyser —the other two geysers with the “old faithful” title are in Wyoming and New Zealand—for a view of the eruption of steam and scalding water that sprays about 60 to 90 feet in the air about every 30 minutes.  When we visited the water was erupting about every 15 minutes and the frequency and height of the eruption changes due to climate and precipitation conditions. There is also a small petting zoo area included in entry that includes goats, sheep, and a llama.

10. Enjoy the Great Outdoors

Hiking, biking, and scenic driving are all popular activities in the Napa Valley. The Vine Trail is a hiking and bike trail that will eventually .  For a list of local hiking and biking trails, biking rental and tour companies, and trail maps, stop by the Napa Tourist Information Center and look up information at the Napa Hiking , Visit Napa Valley , and Napa Life websites, including this guide to 10 bike routes in Napa Valley .

You can also kayak or take a river cruise down the Napa River, such as those provided by Napa Valley Adventure Tours . To see a different part of the Valley, consider fly fishing in nearby Putah Creek to get off the tourist path – Napa Valley Fly Guides  provides half day and full day trips that include fishing gear, lessons, and directions to the best fishing spots by a local expert.

For something a bit less active, try taking a scenic drive along the Silverado Trail , picnicking in one of the numerous parks, or taking a walk through the Petrified Forest in Calistoga. Just exercise caution when biking and even driving on the back roads as there have been a number of accidents on the Silverado Trail for example and it’s always good to be cautious.

Napa without wine Napa besides wine

Even if you are going primarily to visit the many tasting rooms and wineries, I encourage you to spend a little time enjoying the great food, nature, shopping, and history of this region.

Great ideas and nicely organized. I live near Fairfield and am always looking for easy things to do with company. I would like to mention the diRosa preserve in the Carneros region, which could also include a drive by of the Domaine Carneros French faux chateau opposite and the fountains at Artesa, which also has art exhibits. The diRosa collection is quite personal and unique.

Hi Sandy, diRosa is a great idea which is why we already have it mentioned in #6:)

Very helpful article, thank you. We are coming from Texas during the America’s Cup finals. We only have 48 hours in Napa Valley. Is there a must see list somewhere? Planning on seeing Castello de Amorosa and Oxbow market. Then we have 60 hours in San Francisco. Both places have so many restaurants and activities to choose from in such a short period of time.

Welcome Marilyn, I am glad that this article was helpful planning your quick Napa Valley itinerary. Unfortunately, I don’t have much information up on the blog yet on San Francisco, but I am happy to suggest some places for you to visit, just send me an e-mail (see our Contact Us page) and I can try to suggest some places that might be of interest.

I have lived in California for the past 19 years and have yet to make it up to Napa. My best friend is my usual travel partner but she doesn’t drink and that makes a wine tour of Napa a little pointless for her. Maybe I’ll show her this and convince her there is plenty to do in Napa that doesn’t involving drinking wine. For her at least, I will be partaking in the wine.

August 9, 2013 at 4:30 pm

Welcome Rachel, thanks for stopping by. Yes, hopefully this article will convince your friend that there are plenty of other things to do in the Napa Valley besides just wine tasting. My husband and I have never been to Napa Valley, but we are looking forward to our upcoming trip next month. I was a little nervous at the fact that Napa is known as wine country and as much as I love wine I wont be drinking any due to the fact that I am pregnant. I origanally planned and booked this trip about 8 months ago before I was pregnant and found out 2 months ago that i will be expecting. My first thought was just to cancel the trip but after talking to my husband and reasearching all the other things in Napa that you can do without alcohol we decided to go on the trip anyway. I think I am most excited to take a train ride with Dinner. I guess I will be doing a lot of eating and shopping in Napa Valley. Works for me.

August 4, 2013 at 10:39 am

Hi Mary, welcome to our blog! I am glad you found this article helpful. Yes, there are a lot of things you can do in Napa even when you can’t drink. You can also look into the nearby Sonoma area which offers even more outdoors activities and things to do. I am sure you and your husband will have a great time in Napa. Feel free to report back on your trip as I am sure you’ll discover even more fun activities during your trip.

I have been to Napa several times and have done only a few of these things! That mural looks really interesting. Is the crepe place actually in the Main Oxbow Market building? How would you rate the Fairfield factory tours?

August 3, 2013 at 11:33 am

Yes, the crepe place is called La Crepe and is located in the main Oxbow Market building. We have tried the citron crepe and it was good.

La Crepe website

Out of the three Fairfield factory tours mentioned, we have only done the Jelly Belly factory tour. But you drive right by the beer and olive oil factory tours so it would be easy to combine them. We had a long wait for the Jelly Belly tour as its quite popular, especially for families. It’s definitely not for everyone, it is probably best for families traveling with kids and those who really like jelly beans. We liked it, but the long wait in line and the large number of people on the tour were definitely cons. During the tour, we didn’t have opportunities to really ask questions and you mainly watch a series of TV monitors. However, we had fun doing it nonetheless and you get a free bag of jelly beans at the end. You can also book small, private more in-depth tours that really allow you to be on the factory floors and learn more the production of jelly beans. These are $47/person but can be scheduled in advance so you can avoid the lines for the free tours.
