Believe it or not, from the size or the aircraft to the crew in it, many of those services are available on an hourly basis. In this piece, we’ll look at the jet charter costs per hour.

Overall Private Jet Charter Cost Per Hour

The cost of a private jet charter flight has a number of components which fluctuate depending on market rates. Like fuel which you pay for based on distance, not time and demand which depends on the time of the year you choose to fly.

But it’s the hourly charges that determine the final cost of hiring a private jet.

There are many services that give you a rough estimate based on your need. Here’s how to keep the figures in your final invoice under control by calculating the jet charter cost per hour.

Cost Per Hour by Aircraft Type

Most calculators give you an all-inclusive estimate. But if you would like to know the breakdown, we’re here to help. This also helps you compare with other services and pick the one that is best for you.

From turboprops to the luxurious models, there are four types of private jets available for hire. When we look at jet charter cost per hour, rental price is the first aspect of billable flight hours. This could be anywhere between $2,000 to $10,000.

Turboprops or Very Light Jets

These are the smallest of the lot. They have a capacity of 4-8 persons and can go up to an average of 1,800 nautical miles. These are available for $2,000 to $2,800 per flight hour.

Mid-Size Jets

A popular and well-rounded choice, mid-size jets can fly up to 2,000 nautical miles without stopping and have a capacity of 8 to 10 people. Most service providers charge from between $2,900 and $5,800 per hour.

Large and Ultra Long-Range Jets

These can travel up to 4,000 nautical miles and are good for inter-continental travel. They can handle up to 18 people and their baggage. These cost between $6,000 and $10,000 per hour. This is the charge within the US so keep in mind it could vary in other locations.

Luxury Jets

These are usually the ones hired by VIPs and are available in a variety of configurations. From the extraordinarily large Boeing Business Jets to the Airbuses, a charter on these jets varies from $11,000 to $18,000 per flight hour – or more.

Other Considerations

Once you pick the aircraft type based on the distance and your crowd, you should look at the age of the aircraft. This the next factor which is charged per hour. And yes, newer aircraft are more expensive than older ones.

These prices vary from $100 to $1,000 per hour. In this respect, it is advised to make safety a higher priority than containing your budget. Next on the list is the actual flight time.

The number of hours spent in the air is referred to as the total billable flight time. This includes a (re)positioning fee. When you’re planning a trip, you can choose to go to the jet’s home base or be picked up from the nearest airport.

If you want to be picked up, you have to pay for the jet to fly from its base to your nearest airport. That is (re)positioning fee and it is a part of your jet charter cost per hour.

Along with that is your trip time which is departure to arrival time in the air. That is also a part of the jet charter cost per hour. The industry standard in terms of payment is two hours per day whether or not you’re in the air the whole time.

For example, you might get a jet for a 50-minute trip but you pay for two hours. The total billable flight time does not, however, include taxi time. It is calculated, as they say, from wheels up to wheels down.

Short leg fees are also part of a jet charter’s cost per hour. Short leg refers to a shorter flight and the charge usually applied on larger aircraft. Shorter flights require going at a lower altitude and consume more fuel.

This jet charter cost per hour has a minimum industry standard of at least two hours a day.

Fuel surcharge is another part of calculating a jet charter’s cost per hour. This is applicable when there is a surge in market prices and could go up by $600 to $900 per hour. But that depends on the size of the aircraft.

There are many other charges that add up to the final bill but most of them are pretty standard and hardly negotiable. These are the biggest variables and your best shot at keeping your budget from blowing up. Happy flying.

From booking a seat on a semi-private flight to chartering an uber-luxurious private jet, private jet travel comes in many different shapes and sizes.

The convenience of flying private became abundantly clear to fans of the hit HBO show Succession as we watched the Roys zip off to exclusive retreats and far-flung business meetings in a matter of hours. That level of ease of travel at a time when flying commercial has become fraught with long airport lines and cascades of cancellations and delays may have some travelers wondering, how much does flying on a private jet cost, really?

It costs anywhere between $2 million and upwards of $100 million to buy a new private jet, and it costs between $1,300 and $13,000 per flying hour to charter a private jet, depending on the size and capacity of the airplane, according to private jet charter company Air Charter Service.

“For many, private travel is something they tried in the pandemic and a luxury they’re not willing to give up now,” global luxury travel agency consortium Virtuoso reported in a recent survey of travel advisors released in August 2023.

According to Virtuoso, now more than ever high-net-worth travelers are seeking privacy and personalization as they plan upcoming trips. “Private aviation is climbing in popularity for domestic and shorter international flights,” the luxury travel network noted.

Not surprisingly, several private jet charter companies and luxury resort and villa properties have partnered to offer travelers just that: private flight service directly to an exclusive villa or resort destination.

For instance, for $148,000 per person, you can fly on a two-week private jet itinerary hosted by Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts with stops in Greece, Egypt, Tanzania, Rwanda, Zambia, and South Africa. The 13-day African Wonders journey takes place on the Four Seasons private jet, and guests stay at Four Seasons luxury properties globally. Four Seasons currently hosts numerous other private jet journeys each year.

Private jets offer access to destinations that you might not be able to get to otherwise.

How much does it cost to buy a private jet?

You could, of course, go all out and buy a private jet. Depending on the age, make, and model, private jets cost anywhere between $500,000 for an older used model, to upwards of $100 million for a state-of-the-art private jet with all the bells and whistles. Add to that how much it costs to operate and maintain the aircraft, which can be up to several million dollars per year, and we’re looking at quite the investment.

Dream quashed? Not necessarily. From private jet charter services to companies that sell individual seats on private planes, private jet travel is more accessible than you might think.

How much does it cost to charter a private jet?

According to private jet charter company Air Charter Service , you can expect to pay between between $1,300 and $13,000 per flying hour to charter a private jet , depending on the size of the aircraft. It typically costs between $1,300 and $3,000 per flying hour to charter a turboprop or smaller jet plane, which seats 4 to 6 passengers; between $4,000 and $8,000 per flying hour for a midsize jet, which typically accommodates up to 9 passengers; and between $8,600 and $13,000 per flying hour for larger private jets, which usually seat from 14 to 19 passengers. You can see how that translates into a cross-country flight below.

Beyond Air Charter Service, other companies that offer private jet charters include Air Partner , PrivateFly , and Jettly , booking platforms for on-demand private jet charters.

How much does it cost to book a seat on a semi-private jet?

Because passengers are not chartering the entire aircraft the way they would when booking a private jet, the cost to book a seat on a semi-private jet ranges from as little as $209 one-way with semi-private carrier JSX to $1,800 one-way with high-end airline Aero.

Which companies offer semi-private flights?

A growing number of companies are offering travelers the ability to book a single seat, similar to how you would on a commercial flight, on a public charter private jet flight or a semi-private jet. They include:

• Aero: Launched in 2020, the semi-private, luxury airline Aero offers one-way flights from Dallas to Aspen starting at $1,000, one-way flights from Los Angeles to Los Cabos starting at $1,800, and one-way flights from London to Nice starting at $1,600. Prices include one checked luggage and one carry-on. Aero flies from Aspen, Colorado; Jackson Hole, Wyoming; Las Vegas; L.A.; Los Cabos, Mexico; San Francisco; and Sun Valley, Idaho. It also flies between some European hubs, including London; Nice, France; and Ibiza, Spain.
• Blade: A helicopter and semi-private flight service, Blade mainly operates flights from New York City to Palm Beach and Miami, Florida; it also offers helicopter service from Manhattan to John F. Kennedy International Airport and Newark International Airport. One-way flights to Palm Beach start at $1,250.
• JSX: Formerly JetSuiteX, JSX is by far one of the most affordable options for semi-private travel , with one-way fares starting as low as $209 on 30-seat Embraer E135 planes, which includes up to two checked bags as well as snacks and drinks on board. JSX connects several California hubs, including Burbank, Concord, Los Angeles, Monterey, Orange County, Oakland, and San Diego. The airline also flies to Austin, Dallas, Denver, Gunnison/Crested Butte (Colorado), Houston, Las Vegas, Miami, Orlando, Phoenix, Reno-Tahoe, Taos (New Mexico), and Westchester County in New York. JSX planes are outfitted with cushy leather seats and Starlink Wi-Fi.
• Surf Air: Surf Air is a jet membership service that includes both scheduled semi-private flights (such as JSX flights) and on-demand jet service. The semi-private scheduled flights operate from Truckee, San Carlos, Santa Barbara, and Hawthorne in California, and the on-demand flights can be booked to and from hundreds of hubs all across the United States. Memberships range from $199 per month to access the inventory then pay per flight to $2,500 per month to unlock an unlimited flight plan.
• Tradewind Aviation: The Oxford, Connecticut–based Tradewind Aviation operates on-demand and scheduled flights throughout the United States and Caribbean. Scheduled service includes flights to and from Westchester County in New York; Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard in Massachusetts; and Newport, Rhode Island. Tradewind also flies between the Caribbean destinations of Anguilla, Antigua, San Juan, St. Bart’s, and St. Thomas. Flights run anywhere from $300 to hop between Caribbean islands to an opening rate of $395 to fly to Nantucket from Westchester. The aircraft fly out of private air terminals and flights include onboard refreshments.

There’s a private jet app for that

There are also several private jet startups that are based on a sharing economy-style model for booking private jets. One of them is XO , an app that allows passengers to book a private charter, a shared charter, or book seats on an available private flight. XO has two styles of payments, a membership fee model and a pay-as-you-go model. Memberships range from $595 per year, which allows you to skip the $395-per-flight service fee that applies to individual private flight bookings, or you can pay a $395 fee for a seat and add to that a $995 trip cost. For $995 per year, you can access the XO Reserve membership with a minimum $250,000 deposit that includes set hourly private charter pricing and no added fees.

Private jet app UberJets also helps users find and book charter aircraft. It doesn’t own or operate a fleet of aircraft and simply serves as a booking tool.

What is an empty leg deal?

An empty leg is a nonrevenue repositioning private jet flight—a private jet that has dropped passengers off on a one-way leg and would otherwise return to its home base empty. Because these are noncommissioned flights, they can often be accessed at a much lower price than a standard private jet flight as operators are happy to recuperate any of the costs and sell the flight for a deal—well, a deal for an entire private jet.

Private jet services such as Jettly and XO will often list their current empty leg deals and routes online.

What is a private jet card membership and how does it work?

A common way to access private jet service is through a private jet card membership. You pay a fee upfront—typically in the range of $100,000 to $200,000, according to Private Jet Card Comparisons , a site that allows users to compare the different programs available. Then private jet flights will be deducted from your initial deposit, typically at a set cost per hour. Hourly rates range from about $2,000 to $4,000 for a turboprop or smaller private jet up to $20,000 or more for a midsize or larger private jet that can fly longer-haul journeys.

“A jet card refers to debit card–style program that typically enables you to prepay for private jet flights at a fixed hourly rate with guaranteed availability,” Private Jet Card Comparisons explains on its site .

There are dozens of companies that sell private jet cards, including Air Charter Service, Air Partner, Airshare , Airstream Jets Inc., Alliance Aviation, Charter Flight Group, Delta Private Jets, Inc., Flexjet, International Jet, JetSuite, Jettly, Magellan Jets , Netjets, PrivateFly, Privé Jets, Quantum Jets, Unity Jets, VistaJet, and Wheels Up , among numerous others. Some companies specialize in shorter, domestic flights, while others offer access to global destinations, such as VistaJet .

Pricing for private jet charters depends on the size and type of aircraft—and the distance you need to fly.

The benefits of flying private

Avoid the crowds at the airport.

If you fly a private jet out of a major airport, you won’t be going through the main commercial air terminals. Most private jet operators use a designated area adjacent to a major airport for check-in, security, boarding, and disembarkation. Some have converted these areas into sleek lounge spaces for more comfortable waiting environments. But the bottom line is, you won’t be going through the same check-in procedures and security lines as everyone else at the airport—you will have a separate, more secluded area only for private fliers. (Prior to check-in, make sure to establish what the luggage restrictions are as well as those for flying with animals—they will vary depending on the size of the aircraft and by operator, though many typically have standard luggage allowances and allow pets to come along.)

Access to more destinations

Many private jet flights skip the larger, more bustling hubs opting instead to take off and land at smaller airstrips that are less congested. Those smaller airports can often get travelers even closer to their destination than a larger hub would, meaning less travel time to and from the aircraft itself. Access to destinations that don’t have regular commercial service or any service at all is another huge potential bonus of flying private.

Customized travel

When looking to book a private jet, travelers can customize the experience to their needs and wants (and budgets), including the size and style of the aircraft and the level of service. This can also translate into more work for the customer as it’s not as easy as simply going online and booking a flight—some back-and-forth communication is required between the private jet operator and the clients as they establish exactly which aircraft, flight routes, and service will be needed. The payoff is arguably worth it when you find the private flying experience that perfectly suits your desires.

The environmental impact of flying private

We’re not going to sugarcoat it. Flying private does not have a good track record when it comes to the environment. In a November 2019 report , U.K.-based nonprofit group Fellow Travellers together with economic democracy advocacy organization Common Wealth estimated that on average a private jet passenger journey within Europe emits around 7 times the greenhouse gases as the same business-class flight and around 10 times as much as an economy-class flight. Consequently, the report advocates for the rapid electrification of the private jet sector, which it notes is the segment of the air industry that is most amenable to going fully electric in the very near future.

That was confirmed by writer Elissa Garay in her AFAR article “ Electric Planes Are Coming Sooner Than You Think ,” which noted that some of the biggest gains in electric air travel include smaller two- to nine-passenger private electric planes.

Investments in electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft are being made by companies that include Boeing, Airbus, NASA, and Toyota, as well as startups, such as California’s Archer Aviation and Joby Aviation, Germany’s Lilium, and the U.K.’s Vertical Aerospace, Garay reports.

While the Biden administration is making a big push to reduce air emissions by focusing on a switch to more sustainable aviation fuels, environmental organizations continue to emphasize that the biggest impact in the private aviation space will ultimately be a gradual conversion to fully electric flights.

The initial cost of the aircraft will cost $1.1 million to $90 million , brand new, however, used jets will still cost millions of dollars. Beyond the initial costs, there are many other costs to consider, such as fuel, maintenance and repairs, storage, registration, and flight crew costs. You will also want to consider where you will fly and how often you will use your private jet when selecting an aircraft type and budget for your private jet costs. We will also discuss the advantages and disadvantages of owning a private jet, along with how to finance your purchase. 

Factors to Consider When Buying a Private Jet

• Your Travel Routine: How often you fly, how far you travel, and how many passengers you wish to fly are all factors to consider when selecting the size of a private jet.
• New or Used: Used planes cost significantly less than brand new planes, however, you will want to consider the maintenance, repair, and upkeep costs. 
• Number of Crew Members: The cost of a qualified crew can cost upwards of $215,000 annually, depending on the size of the private jet. So, you will need to budget for necessary crew members.
• Fuel and Maintenance Costs: You will need to budget a realistic amount annually for fuel, as well as, maintenance repairs, some of which can be unexpected. A windshield could crack costing you $10,000 to replace, so it is important to have available funds for potential mishaps.

Costs Involved with Owning a Private Jet

As mentioned, there are additional costs, to the jet itself, to think about when considering buying a private jet. 

Jet Pricing and Fuel Costs

The larger the jet engine, the higher the hourly cost for fuel . You will want to consider how much fuel you plan to use and what the hourly fuel cost averages for the private jet(s) you are interested in purchasing. The type of jet, tank capacity, gallons per hour of fuel burned, and the average cost of jet fuel in your region should all be considered when calculating estimated fuel costs .

The Hourly Rate

The hourly rate refers to the total cost of operating a private jet per hour. Crew costs, handling fees, landing fees, and aircraft repositioning fees, are all examples of costs that go into the total hourly rate of operation. For example, a propeller plane averages around $2,000 per hour, whereas a large 10-16 passenger jet can run $7,500 per hour. 

Insurance(s)

Private jet insurance is available for liability, medical, hull coverage, and legal defense. The standard minimum liability covers up to $1,000,000 in damages and $100,000 per passenger, but higher premiums are available for more coverage and additional policies are required for hull (damage to the jet), and potential legal defense. 

Airport Clearance Charges

Storage Costs

Unless you own an airplane hangar, you will need to factor the cost of storage into your annual operating budget. It is recommended that you are utilizing a minimum of 100 flight hours per year to justify the ownership of a private jet. As an example, a $1,000,000 private jet will require enough space to cost around $3000 per month to store. 

Your private jet will require an experienced flight crew to assist with passengers and operations. An overnight flight crew within the U.S. can cost approximately $750 for a midsize jet and can double for a long range flight. A full time flight crew for a large aircraft can cost over $200,000 per year. 

Upgrading/Add-ons

If you are not buying a private jet that is brand new, you may consider upgrades or add-ons to your used aircraft. You may wish to add value by upgrading the interior of your jet or decrease fuel cost by adding winglets to your jet. This is right on the limit the maximum flight time for a light or super light jet aircraft. Therefore, if you want to fly non-stop, a medium sized aircraft will be required. Private Jet Charter Rates Vary Depending on the Following:

• Charter flight itinerary – The dates you are planning to travel, your airports of departure & arrival, and if there are any stops on the way creating a multiple leg flight.
• Aircraft availability – Many flights are booked using planes directly from the airport of departure. Sometimes it ends up being more cost-effective having us re-position an aircraft from a different location to pick you up from your preferred airport and accommodate your flight.
• Aircraft type – Different trips require different aircraft type. The length of your trip, the amount of passengers you are traveling with, or distance you will be traveling, could change what type of plane that is needed. You could use a smaller turbo prop airplane to go from one state to another but if you want to visit a different continent, you will surely need a heavy jet. Sometimes your flight is just to beat the traffic and a helicopter charter is your best bet. If you are an experienced flyer you may even have a preferred make or model plane.
• Catering – One of the best parts about flying private. You get to choose exactly what you want on board, whether it be your favorite wine, cheese & fruit platter, pancakes for dinner, fish, steak, veggie, or a Kosher meal. (If you are requesting to include these in your quote.)
• Ground transportation – Although we do not provide this service directly, we can assist in arranging through a third party vendor. You may require a limousine, town car, SUV or even armored transportation. (If you are requesting to include these in your quote.)
• Federal excise taxes, flight segment taxes
• International fees when traveling abroad – When flying to or from countries other than the USA it is expected that other countries have fees unique to their land and these are passed on directly to the flyer as they are taxes
• Customs fees & cross border fees (where applicable)

These are the main factors that can influence charter rates and your private jet charter cost . How fast do planes fly? Exploring airplane speeds 

It goes without saying that planes are seriously fast, but they can fly at a whole range of different speeds depending on the type of aircraft , altitude, weather conditions, and other factors. Aviation speed is typically measured in miles per hour (mph) – or a Mach number, which is a measurement of speed relative to the speed of sound. 

Let’s explore how fast planes fly by focusing on commercial, military, and private jet speeds. 

Different types of aircraft speed measurement

There are two main categories: ground speed and airspeed . Ground speed refers to the aircraft’s speed relative to the ground below. Airspeed is the more commonly used measurement in aviation and is usually measured in knots (kt), with one knot equivalent to 1.15 mph. This measurement considers the aircraft’s speed relative to the surrounding air, which is essential for safe and efficient flight.  

The two most common types of airspeed are indicated airspeed (IAS) and true airspeed (TAS). Indicated airspeed is the speed shown on the aircraft’s instrument panel and is based on the pressure differential between the pitot tube and static port on the airplane. However, due to a variety of factors such as instrument errors and atmospheric conditions, indicated airspeed may not always be an accurate representation of the aircraft’s true airspeed. 

Therefore, true airspeed is the actual speed of the aircraft relative to the surrounding air, independent of instrument errors or other factors. It is calculated by adjusting the indicated airspeed for temperature and altitude and is usually measured in kt or mph. 

Plane speeds

Mach and mph are two different units of measurement for speed. Mph is a unit of measurement commonly used for ground vehicles and aircraft, and it measures the distance an object travels within an hour. Mach number is a unit of measurement that compares the speed of an object to the speed of sound. 

The speed of sound, which is referred to as Mach 1, is approximately 767 mph (at sea level and at a temperature of 68 degrees Fahrenheit). Therefore, Mach 0.85, which is the typical cruising speed of commercial airliners, means that the aircraft is traveling at 85% of the speed of sound, or approximately 646 mph at sea level. 

In comparison, the fastest human running speed ever recorded is approximately 28 mph – and needless to say, that’s significantly slower than the cruising speed of a commercial airliner. Even the slowest commercial airliner takeoff and landing speeds are much faster than the fastest recorded human running speed. 

Specifically, the cruising speed of commercial airliners is typically around 550-600 mph, or Mach 0.85. Takeoff and landing speeds are much slower, typically between 130-180 mph, depending on the aircraft and weather conditions. The landing speed of a commercial airliner can be around 160-180 mph, while the takeoff speed can be around 130-160 mph. 

The fastest passenger planes

The Airbus A350-1000 first entered service in 2018 and has a top speed of Mach 0.89, which means it can travel at approximately 683 mph at sea level. This makes it the fastest commercial plane currently in operation. The A350-1000 is also known for its fuel efficiency and advanced technology, making it a popular choice among airlines. 

Another leading commercial airliner is the Boeing 747-8, which has been in service since 2011. It has a top speed of Mach 0.86, so it can travel at approximately 660 mph at sea level. The 747-8 is the latest variant of the Boeing 747, which has been a popular aircraft for over 50 years. The 747-8 is known for its large size and range, making it ideal for long-haul flights. 

The fastest civilian aircraft ever built is the retired Concorde supersonic jet. Supersonic refers to speeds that surpass Mach 1 – the speed of sound. The Concorde was a joint venture between British Aerospace and the French company Aerospatiale. It entered service in 1976 and was retired in 2003. The Concorde could fly at speeds of up to Mach 2.04, or just over 1,565 mph. As such, it could travel from London to New York in just over three hours, compared to the average seven-hour flight time for other commercial airliners. 

Despite its impressive speed, the Concorde was ultimately retired due to factors including high operating costs, environmental concerns and safety issues. 

The fastest military aircraft 

The Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird is a reconnaissance aircraft that was developed by Lockheed Martin for the United States Air Force. It first entered service in 1966 and was retired in 1998. The Blackbird is known for its impressive speed, altitude, and ability to evade detection. It has a top speed of Mach 3.3, which means it can fly at over 2,512 mph, and a maximum altitude of 85,000 feet.  

The Blackbird was designed to conduct reconnaissance missions over hostile territory, and its high-speed and altitude capabilities allowed it to avoid enemy radar and surface-to-air missiles. Despite its performance, the Blackbird was retired due to high operating costs and the development of new reconnaissance technologies.

The Russian MiG-25 , also known as the Foxbat, is a supersonic interceptor and reconnaissance aircraft that first entered service in 1970. It has a top speed of Mach 2.83, or over 2,154 mph, and a maximum altitude of more than 80,000 feet.

The MiG-25 was designed to intercept and destroy enemy aircraft at high speeds and altitudes. It was also capable of conducting reconnaissance missions over hostile territory. Used extensively by the Soviet Union and several other countries, only two units remain in service with the Syrian Air Force . 

In addition to the SR-71 Blackbird and the MiG-25, there are many other military aircraft that are capable of flying at supersonic speeds. These include the F-15 Eagle , the F-16 Fighting Falcon , the Su-27 Flanker , the Eurofighter Typhoon, the Tu-160 Blackjack, the Antonov An-22, and the Rockwell B-1 Lancer. These aircraft are designed for a variety of missions, including air-to-air combat, ground attack, and reconnaissance.  

Though the supersonic flight is an impressive technological feat, it is important to note that it comes burdened with several challenges, from high fuel consumption and environmental concerns such as sonic booms. 

The fastest private jets 

The Gulfstream G700 has a maximum cruising speed of Mach 0.925, or approximately 710 mph. It can fly nonstop for more than 7,000 nautical miles (12,964 km), making it a popular choice for long-range business travel. 

Another very fast private jet is the Cessna Citation X + , with a maximum cruising speed of Mach 0.935 or roughly 717 mph. It can fly up to 3,460 nautical miles (6,408 km) and is used for short to medium-range business travel. 

The fastest private jet currently available is the Bombardier Global 8000 which has a maximum cruising speed of Mach 0.94 . This long-range jet can fly up to 7,900 nautical miles (14,631 km) non-stop, making it one of the most capable business jets on the market. 

However, it is worth noting that the top speed of private jets can vary depending on various factors, such as altitude, temperature, weight, and even humidity. While private jets are typically designed to reach high speeds, the actual speed during a flight may be lower than the maximum speed possible, due to various factors such as air traffic control restrictions, turbulence, and weather conditions.

How fast does an airplane really go?

It's a simple question but one without a simple answer: How fast does an airplane fly?

Believe it or not, pilots rely on multiple speeds throughout a flight. Generally, there are four different speeds that measure different things and are affected by different atmospheric conditions.

Before we get ahead of ourselves, let's get two obvious facts out of the way. First, an aircraft travels at different speeds depending on the phase of flight. Second, different aircraft types are capable of traveling at different speeds.

How fast is an airplane in the air?

Airspeed is measured in knots. One knot equals 1 nautical mile per hour. One nautical mile is 1.15078 statute miles (what we commonly know as a mile). So, 1 knot is equal to 1.15078 miles per hour.

The simplest type of airspeed is indicated airspeed, which is directly derived from an aircraft's pitot-static system.

When an aircraft is in flight or speeding down the runway, the air gets forced into the opening of the pitot tube and is measured, while static pressure measures just that — static air conditions. Indicated airspeed is simply calculated by measuring the difference between the dynamic, pitot pressure and static pressure.

But that's not the most accurate metric once an aircraft is airborne. Different temperatures, atmospheric pressure and other factors mean that this airspeed must be converted into something more realistic and usable at higher altitudes.

That's what true airspeed is.

True airspeed adjusts indicated airspeed for a number of factors. Most importantly, it adjusts it for the temperature and pressure at higher altitudes — as an aircraft climbs, the temperature generally decreases and the air pressure always decreases. Once we make those adjustments, think of true airspeed as how fast the air is moving over the aircraft's wings at a particular altitude.

Pilots actually rely on another type of speed during the cruise — and it's technically not a speed at all. Mach number is the ratio of true airspeed to the speed of sound, and it's highly influenced by atmospheric conditions, especially temperature. It's a highly accurate way of fine-tuning speed in a particular area, and it's the unit that air traffic controllers use to separate traffic at higher altitudes.

What is an airplane's average groundspeed?

Finally, groundspeed is perhaps the most simple of the speeds. It's an aircraft's speed across the ground that gets adjusted for winds and altitude. For example, if an A321 has a true airspeed of 460 knots (529 mph), but is flying from New York to Los Angeles during the winter when head winds can be very strong, the actual groundspeed will be less. If it's facing a head wind component of 100 knots (115 mph) — which is entirely possible that time of year — its actual groundspeed would be a glacial 360 knots (414 mph), and you'd be looking at a very long trip to the West Coast. Still, the Mach number would remain unchanged, because the true airspeed is unchanged.

Since an aircraft's groundspeed is highly influenced by the winds it encounters aloft, there's no groundspeed associated with individual aircraft types. A general rule of thumb is that an aircraft's groundspeed can be anywhere from 350 knots (in a stiff head wind) to 550 knots (in a strong tail wind). Of course, there are outliers. Each winter, there are often stories about aircraft encountering very strong tail winds when headed east over the Atlantic Ocean. Sometimes, these are in excess of 700 knots groundspeed, or 805 mph. These aircraft are actually not going any faster than normal — in fact, some might even slow down to conserve fuel given the strong winds. However, by taking advantage of the wind, they're able to travel at incredibly fast speeds.

Of course, the aircraft headed westbound aren't as lucky. The dispatchers for those aircraft will often plan a more circuitous route — one that's a longer distance — in order to avoid the strong head winds. Traveling a longer distance is worth it because the aircraft will save more fuel than it would on a more direct routing that takes the aircraft directly into head winds.

Bottom line

There's no easy way to answer how fast an airplane flies. But for the flying public, the easiest answer is probably groundspeed. It's how fast your flight is traveling directly over the ground, and has the largest direct impact to 8888.

It is a common misconception that private jets fly faster than commercial airliners because they are associated with celebrities and the wealthy. While some private jets are faster than commercial airplanes, many variables determine how fast an airplane can go. Flying private saves time as there are no lines or security or boarding, but do they fly faster than commercial planes?f

Speed of a private jet

Typically, private jets travel at a faster speed than commercial planes due to their ability to fly at higher altitudes . Furthermore, private jets are smaller than most commercial planes, allowing them to travel at faster speeds. With that said, a private jet's speed depends on the engine type and aircraft category.

For instance, the smaller private jets known as turboprops, propeller-driven jets generally fly between 190 miles per hour and 500 mph. One of the most popular turboprop private jets is the Pilatus PC12, with over 2,000 delivered as of May 2023. This jet can accommodate up to 8 passengers and fly at speeds up to 327 mph.

Now, larger private jets can travel at speeds between 400 mph and 700 mph and have an average cruising speed of 600 mph. Currently, the fastest private jet operating in the world is the Cessna Citation X+. The jet can travel up to 717 mph and was certified in 2014 but was discontinued in 2018 with under 30 aircraft sold.

However, this title will be overtaken by the Bombardier Global 8000 , which can reach speeds of 721 mph. Although the Global 8000 has not yet been officially released during testing in May 2021, it exceeded the speed of sound traveling at 778 mph. The Global 8000's commercial speed makes it the fastest civilian aircraft since the Concorde. Bombardier plans on releasing the jet in 2025.

Why do private jets fly so fast?

Commercial airlines, such as the Boeing 747 , have a significantly lower cruising speed than the average private jet, as it is just 500mph. This is due to a myriad of factors, including the temperature, altitude, and the mass of the airplane. A plane with more mass creates more drag, thus limiting its speed. Furthermore, a larger airplane requires more thrust to accelerate faster.

The higher an airplane climbs in altitude, the maximum possible speed increases. Each plane has an altitude for achieving the best speed, which is why airplanes fly at a specific altitude. Additionally, as planes travel higher, the temperature decreases, increasing the maximum thrust, thus allowing the plane to travel faster.

Private jets typically fly at an altitude of 41,000, whereas commercial jets fly at lower altitudes, between 31,000 and 38,000 feet. The higher the altitude, the thinner the air is, giving less resistance to keep the plane in the sky. Flying too high also poses a safety risk, as in the event of an emergency, it would take longer to reach a safe altitude.

This, coupled with the fact that flying at a higher altitude, keeps private jets out of the same airspace that is used by commercial planes, making it easier for air traffic control.

Lastly, private jets are smaller compared to the average commercial airplane. One of the most popular private jets, the Cessna Citation X, typically seats eight passengers and has a maximum capacity of 11 passengers. Compared with the most popular commercial jets, the Boeing 737 and Airbus A320 seat between 160 and 180 passengers.

Jet2 reissues '12 hours' departure alert and check in update

Jet2 has reissued a "12 hours" update to all passengers with flights and holidays booked. The travel operator provides regular information to all passengers, including any events that may cause disruption or delays and on Wednesday, September 4, it repeated an update it has sent out previously.

A post in its guidance section was updated this morning, and reads: "Please check this section of the website at least 12 hours before your flight for the latest flight information. Customers are advised to arrive at their departure airport at least 2 hours before their scheduled departure time.

"In the event of any flight delays further information can be found by using the above search panel by entering your flight number or route. As a reminder check in desks will close 40 minutes before your scheduled departure time. Rest assured, in the event of flight disruption our dedicated Operations teams are always working hard behind the scenes at our UK-based HQ to get you on your way as soon as possible."

Elsewhere, Jet2 continues to remind passengers that Palma airport in Majorca continues to undergo an upgrade. Its guidance states: "We'd just like to let you know that Majorca (Palma) Airport is currently undergoing some maintenance work. Don't worry though, we're liaising with the airport to ensure your airport experience runs as smoothly as possible.

Vietjet is rolling out a one-day promo on Monday 9 September.

It's offering economy tickets at a huge 99 per cent off across the whole network.

While the price doesn't include tax and fees, the bargain flights are on offer from 1 January to 22 May 22, 2025.

The availability of discounted seats on the low-cost airline varies depending on the route and travel dates, the airline points out.

Vietjet flies from Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Brisbane and Perth to destinations including Hoh Chi Minh City, Hai Noi and Da Nang.

We'd recommend heading to Da Nang which is closest to the unique ancient riverside town of Hoi An.

It's famous for two things - its colourful lanterns and its tailoring shops.
