Best (and Worst) Times to Visit Goa & Rainy Season (2024/2025)

Goa is a popular beach destination in India. As it is affected by the monsoon from June to October, the best times to visit Goa are from November to April with less rain and better weather.

While the best times to visit Goa are from November to April weatherwise, this can depend on your Goa holiday purposes, budget, and weather preferences.

For the finest weather conditions , sightseeing experiences, and water activity conditions, December to February is the best period. You can expect a prefect beach time with sunny, dry, and warm weather.

For the best times to visit Goa for your honeymoon or family trip , consider November to early December and March to April. These are times with relatively few tourists and good weather. Of course, December to February is also a great time if you don't mind crowds.

You can expect lower prices from May to October, which is the rainy season, with 30–50% off offered by many hotels and flights.

For a good travel experience, June to August is best avoided, as these months see extremely heavy rain (0.5–1 meters of rain per month!) with less than 4 hours of sunshine per day and averaging 20 rainy days each month. Torrential rain storms are accompanied by strong winds.

Many attractions like national parks and restaurants will close during this period.

If you want a favorable price and don't want to be affected so much by the rains, you may consider traveling in May, September, and October, which are at the transition months of the monsoon with only moderate to high rainfall and around 10 days of rain per month.

Frequent showers and occasional hurricanes hit Goa during its monsoon season. June to August suffer huge quantities rainfall, and June/July is the peak.

The abundant rainfall makes the Dudhsagar Waterfalls flow at their most spectacular. In June, there will be one of the important festivals in Goa — Sao Joao Festival. People jump into streams, wells, and ponds, which signifies the happiness of St John the Baptist when Jesus was born, and they pray for a good monsoon and harvest.

The rainy season in Goa might discourage some people from going on holiday there, but during this period, Goa is relatively cool at 29°C (84°F) compared to the 35°C (95°F) temperatures in other parts of India, so many locals choose to escape the heat there.

Lower prices, few tourists, and lush shades of green are the advantages of traveling in Goa in the monsoon if you don't mind the disruption of your plans by storms. What you should note is that on heavy rainy days with strong winds, some attractions and restaurants close.

Goa's dry season features comfortable summer temperatures and clear, sunny weather. It is the best time of the year to visit Goa.

In Christmas and New Year, Goa will be embraced by a strong festival atmosphere. The sound of carols echoes from the walls of the churches. Parties on the beach and bars, music, and fireworks are also indispensable elements of the celebrations.

In Goa's hot season, you can expect less crowding than during the dry season and rainless weather until late May. This is also a good time to visit Goa, especially between March and April.

Most of the time is suitable for water activities, sunbathing, and sightseeing. At the end of May there is some monsoon influence, but not much.

One of Goa's biggest festivals, Shigmo Festival (Goa's version of Holi) falls in March or April. The processions with traditional Goan dances and modern floats are the highlight.

You can expect reasonable prices during this period. Heat averaging 33°C (91°F) in the middle of the day is an unavoidable element of the hot season. Remember to bring some sun protection. It could be a good idea to wait to go out until after 3 or 4 pm.

The best time to visit Goa is from November to February when the weather is ideal for sightseeing and relaxing on the stunning beaches. The temperature during this time ranges around 20 to 30 degrees Celcius and it is also the peak tourist season in Goa. A Complete 7-day Itinerary and Guide to Goa for First Timers

This guide to Goa is perfect for those of you planning to travel there for the first time, as it talks about the best time to visit, how to reach Goa, popular beaches in North and South Goa, where to stay for your first visit, and how to get around. Also included is Goa itinerary for 7 days.

Goa is a tropical paradise with endless white and golden-sand beaches lined with swaying palm trees. This small state in the southwestern region of India is unlike any other, with its laid-back culture balanced by its thriving nightlife. But that’s not all there is to Goa. It is a land of soothing bike rides, fascinating world heritage sites, plush resorts, friendly hostels, delectable seafood, and various forms of spiritual practices. It is definitely the most popular destination in India amongst Indian and international travellers (after the Taj Mahal, of course), as it has something for everyone.

Guide to Goa For First Timers

What is the best time to visit goa.

March-May : These are the summer months when Goa gets unbearably muggy, with temperatures touching 40ºC (104ºF).

June – September : During these monsoon months, Goa becomes lush green. It is relatively quieter than other months. Most shacks are temporary structures that are dismantled during this period and water sports aren’t going on. But this is a charming time in Goa overall, with plenty of restaurants and activities to keep you entertained.

November–February : Winter is the peak season here. Goa, being a coastal area, is balmy while the inland parts of the country go through typical winter temperatures. The sun is always out and the cool sea breeze blows through from time to time. December is the busiest month as Goa hosts the Annual Sunburn Music Festival, which attracts people from all over. Plus, people flock in to celebrate Christmas and New Year’s holidays at this party destination.

Verdict: For your first time in Goa, you should visit during the season, Mid-October to Mid-March , so that you can see all that Goa has to offer. The shacks will be open, beach stays will be available in South Goa and the weather will be pleasant. However, the prices will be higher than any other time of the year.

How to reach Goa?

Goa’s international airport is situated at Dabolim, near Vasco Da Gama, and there is also a new airport in North Goa, Manohar International Airport. You can land at either of these and hire a taxi to your hotel/hostel.

While most cities in India have an organised cab service like Uber and Ola, Goa has GoaMiles ( now also an app) that can pass for Goa’s very own Uber. We’ve used it a few times and found cabs at a good rate. You can also opt for the taxis lined up on the road outside the airport (be prepared to bargain and ensure to set prices before the start of the trip) or prepaid taxi stands at airports that have a set price. You can always ask at your accommodation if they provide airport transfers but these might turn out to be more expensive.

Local buses in Goa are significantly cheaper but also very inconvenient, as you would have to change multiple vehicles to get to your destination in Goa. Use the local bus only if you’re on a super low budget.

Bus, Cab and Car

You can also opt to reach Goa by overnight bus or cab from major cities like Mumbai, Pune, Bangalore, and Hyderabad in India. If travelling by bus, Mapusa would be your de-boarding point for North Goa , Panjim for Central , and Margao/Canacona for South .

You can book your bus via Redbus .

We’ve driven it down from Pune a few times now and once from Hyderabad. The road is full of potholes as you get closer to Goa. But you’ll cross ghats and waterfalls. It is beautiful!

Goa is also well connected by train to the rest of India. The main train stations are Vasco da Gama (central), Margao (south) and Thivim (north) .

Which area to stay in Goa?

A fairly empty Baga Beach - One of the popular beaches in North Goa

Goa is divided into North and South Goa, with its capital, Panaji (popularly known as Panjim), located around the centre. For your first time in Goa, it can be confusing to decide where to stay, as different corners of the state offer different experiences. In this itinerary, you’ll be staying in both North Goa and South Goa .

Baga, Calangute, Candolim or Anjuna : This is a good option for your first time in Goa, as the area is very central, so all places to see would be close to you.

However, please note that these beaches aren’t best, as they’re the most popular in Goa. Every Tom Dick and Harry visit these beaches so the crowd is also such. However, your purpose of staying around this area is different. You’re here to enjoy the water sports, the parties, the food and maybe even shop a little.

A little further north is Anjuna. While it is not the best location to stay for this itinerary, this area has come up a lot in the past few years, so you’ll find a lot of must-visit restaurants in Goa around this area.

Palolem or Agonda: For your first trip to South Goa, you should stay at one of these two beaches and explore other beaches nearby. These beaches have restaurants but yet maintain a relaxed vibe so you can enjoy time on the beach. Remember that you should only stay in South Goa beaches beach from October to March as the huts and shacks are mostly dismantled before the monsoons and built back up when the monsoons get over. How to get around Goa?

Taxis are expensive in Goa and not ideal for getting around and sightseeing. Buses are quite cheap but again, inconvenient. Instead, opt for a scooter or motorbike for the duration of your stay in Goa. There is no better way to get around, as it will give you the utmost freedom. The best bit is that it is inexpensive at about Rs. 500–800 a day, depending on the season (off-season or peak), type of bike (scooters like Honda Activa, low-end bikes like Bajaj Pulsar or high-end ones, like Royal Enfield) and your haggling skills.

If you don’t want to ride a bike or moped, you can hire a car . Most offer stick shifts so if you don’t know how to drive these, finding an automatic may not be easy. However, we have always managed to find one and so should you. Economy cars usually cost about Rs. 1000–1200 per day but may go up depending on the season.

You can get a bike or car on hire easily by talking to your accommodation host or hotel.

The perfect 1 week Goa Itinerary: North and South Goa

The Goa experience is different for every individual depending on their style of travel. It’s never a one size fits all because there is simply so much to see and do. We have stayed in Goa for 2 months and have yet not seen it all. Your personalised Goa itinerary would largely depend on what you enjoy – nature, culture, beaches, partying, etc. In this 7-day Goa itinerary, we’ve tried to include a bit of everything so you can get a true feel of the different sides of Goa and decide for yourself which aspect of Goa you enjoy the most!

Day 1-2 North Goa – Watersports, Shopping, Partying

Stay near the Baga Beach/ Arpora area. Despite being crowded, it is close to a lot of North Goa tourist spots you’ll be visiting. And also, hire a scooty, bike or car. You’ll need it to get around. Prior reservations for restaurants are needed!

Day 1: Beach, Water sports, Party

Visit Baga Beach during your first time in Goa

Reach Goa and check into your hotel or Airbnb
Rent a vehicle
Calangute Beach for lunch at Pousada by the Beach
Water sports and sunset at Baga Beach
At night go partying at Hammerz (popular music) in the Baga Area or Las Olas (Bollywood music) at Baga Beach. Or both as they’re close by! Start at Hammerz and end at Las Olas.

Day 2: Cliffside Restaurants, Fort, Sundowner, Party

You don’t need to do all of these things mentioned below. Select the ones you wish to do based on your preferences and how much time you have. I’d recommend not partying till late this night so you can be fresh to explore Goa the next morning.

Wake up late this day since you’ve partied the previous night
Lunch: Titlie OR Antares OR Casa Playa at Little Vagator or Felix OR Artjuna or Vinayak at Anjuna.
Shop: Now go shop at Anjuna Flea Market!
Explore Chapora Fort (The movie ‘Dil Chahta Hai’ was shot here so expect it to be crowded)
Stay for sunset or go for a sundowner to Thalassa closeby
Dinner at Ida in Vagator
Party at one of the following – Soro (Siolim) or Romeo Lane (Little Vagator).

Day 3-4: North Goa – Culture, Heritage and Nature

Day 3: culture and heritage.

Head for a day trip to Panjim and Old Goa . On this day, you’ll get a good glimpse of Portuguese influence on Goan heritage.

Old Goa Churches : Start with Old Goa, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and see the following churches in this order:

St. Augustine Church Ruins
Basilica of Bom Jesus (the most renowned)
Convent of Santa Monica and The Museum of Christian Art (optional but good)
Se Cathedral
Church of St. Cajetan
Viceroy’s Arch
Our Lady of Mount Chapel (optional- for panoramic views of the Panjim area)

Ruins of the Chuch of St. Augustine is a fantastic spot to add to your Goa itinerary

Going on a tour will help you make the most of your time and understand the significance of Old Goa and its churches. It is highly recommended. We’ve taken several tours by this company and loved all of them.

Lunch : Head for either a local Goan lunch at Kokni Kanteen or Cafe Al Fresco By Cantina Bodeg a for continental food. Both are close to your next stop.

Fontainhas : After lunch, take a walk in Fontainhas, Asia’s largest Latin Quarter, which has lanes lined with houses built in the colonial style and painted in bright shades of red, yellow, green, and blue. We highly recommend seeing this area on a Latin Quarter walking tour; only then will you truly be able to appreciate the history and architecture. However, if you don’t wish to take a tour, start your walk at Maruti Mandir or Phoenix Springs, ending at the Church of Immaculate Conception. See the colourful houses, click a lot of photos at the colourful wall of Old Quarter Hostel, buy some Azulejo tile décor at Velha Goa Galleria, admire the white façade of St. Sebastian Chapel, and have some bebinca (Goan Dessert) at Confeitaria 31 De Janeiro .

Evening: Get drinks and small bites at Antonio@31 or head for a full-fledged dinner at Black Sheep Bistro . Please check the prices of these restaurants beforehand to see if they fit your budget and make reservations beforehand. You could also go for a fun Pub Crawl instead.

Night: Later you could head to a Deltin Royale Casino (buy tickets online for the best deals) OR go back home to rest for an early morning the next day.

Book Tours in Goa

Day 4: Nature and Heritage

Chorao Island and the Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary : Do this either on a tour or go by yourself. You’ll have to take a ferry from Ribandar. Don’t miss the famous Mangrove Broadwalk. It is beautiful. We haven’t been here yet but can’t wait to go!

Lunch: Lazy Goose , Nerul. Reserve the table with the lake view if you can.

Depending on the time you start the day, see one/two of the following attractions. Choose one museum and one fort:

Houses of Goa Museum (do this only after a walking tour of Fontainhas; otherwise, nothing will make any sense) OR Museum of Goa (modern art tinged in Goan history).
Aguada Fort (great for sunsets but crowded) OR Reis Magos Fort (relatively less known and beautiful).

Reis Magos Fort is a hidden gem in North Goa.

Have dinner in the Candolim, Calangute, or Baga area. There are plenty of good restaurants.

A Reverie : Fine Dining Toro Toro : Continental/Goan Yazu – Pan Asian Beach Club: Asian

Day 5-6: South Goa – Beaches and relaxation

Day 5: spice plantations, iconic restaurants, relaxation.

Now, head to South Goa. Stay at Agonda or Palolem Beach- both are fantastic beaches for your first time in Goa.

But on your way, you have the option of making a few stops.

Sahakari Spice Plantation: Wonder why the Portuguese were so fascinated by Goa? The answer lies in the tantalising smell and flavours of spices like Cardamom, Cinnamon, Cloves, Allspice, Cumin, etc. See how these spices grow and learn about them. End with a local buffet lunch at the plantation. I found the experience very interesting and learned a lot. You can buy the ticket on reaching there.
Iconic Restaurants: If you’re not in the mood for the above, stop at Martin’s Corner or Fisherman’s Wharf for lunch. They are both very renowned.

Check into your hotel and use this day to do nothing and just relax on the beach, see the sunset, etc. Otherwise, you could also choose to head to Sundowner Palolem (Bar) for a sundowner!

Day 6: Beaches and Viewpoints

Today is going to be a long day of beach hopping.

Cola Beach: Start your day at Cola Beach. It’s a bit of a hike down to the beach. You can even take the jeep to the beach to save time and effort but it’ll cost a bit. Cola Beach is famous for its lagoon, where you can swim and kayak. You can have lunch here before heading to your next stop.

Kakolem Beach: This beach has a waterfall. Yes, you read that right. ( you can skip this beach if you’re running short on time or want to take it a bit slow).

Cabo De Rama Fort and Cabo De Rama Viewpoint for sunset . Both are gorgeous spots with fantastic views – you’ll love the sunset here. You can also choose to have a meal and drink at the Cape Goa restaurant near the viewpoint before heading back to your hotel.

Day 7: Butterfly Beach and Palolem/Agonda Beach

Butterfly Beach : It’s a beautiful secluded beach. You can hike it to the beach or go via boat but I’ll suggest going as early as possible to avoid crowds.
Palolem/Agonda Beach : For lunch head to either of these beaches that you’re not staying at. At Palolem, you can have lunch at Dropadi by the beach and at Treetop Tava or Zest (vegan cafe) at Agonda. Walk around the beach later afterwards.

Depart for home this evening or the next morning!

But do not forget to book your tours in goa before you get there!

Tips to Stay Safe in Goa

This guide to Goa would be incomplete if I didn’t mention tips to stay safe there. Goa is really welcoming and local-friendly. But because it is a thriving party location and has people travelling from all over, you should take care of the following, especially if you’re a woman.

Don’t hitchhike.
If you’re a woman travelling solo, preferably rent a car. If you’re a woman travelling in a group, bikes will do.
Always get a video of the vehicle hired to avoid being ripped off on returning the vehicle.
Don’t go out with people you don’t know and never go to parties alone.
Watch your drink.
Try to stay vigilant, even when drunk.
Some Indian men can assume friendliness as flirting.
Be cautious of theft at your accommodation. Huts can easily be broken into.
Drugs are available abundantly in Goa. Avoid getting stuck in the middle of a drug racket.
Avoid drunk driving. It is being monitored by the police more strictly than before.

When is the Best Time to Visit Goa?

I love visiting Goa anytime of year, but for most first-time visitors the best time is during the dry season, which runs from November to March. During this period, the weather is wonderful with minimal rainfall. I think these months are perfect for enjoying the region’s beautiful beaches, water sports, and vibrant nightlife, as well as exploring historical sites and attending local festivals such as the Goa Carnival and Sunburn Festival.

When I Recommend to Visit Goa

Weather : The most pleasant weather in Goa occurs from November to March, with comfortable temperatures ranging from 70°F (21°C) to 85°F (29°C) and minimal rainfall, making it ideal for outdoor activities and sightseeing. April also has tourist-friendly weather though it gets progressively hot as the monsoon season gets closer.

Beaches : The best beach weather in Goa is during the dry season (November to March), when the sea is calm, and the sun is shining. The popular beaches like Baga, Calangute, Anjuna, and Palolem are perfect for sunbathing, swimming, and beach parties. (Palolem and Benaulim are my favorite beaches in Goa.)

Honeymoon : For a romantic honeymoon in Goa, consider visiting during the shoulder season months of November, February, and March when the weather is still pleasant, and the tourist crowds are less intense. This offers a more intimate atmosphere and a better chance to explore the region’s natural beauty, beaches, and historical sites.

Water sports : Water sports like jet-skiing, parasailing, windsurfing, and scuba diving are most enjoyable during the dry season (November to March), when the sea conditions are more favorable, and the weather is sunny and warm.

Families : Family trips to Goa can be enjoyable year-round, but the dry season (November to March) offers the best opportunities for outdoor activities, beach vacations, and exploring attractions like wildlife sanctuaries, forts, and churches.

Avoiding crowds : To avoid the largest crowds in Goa, consider visiting during the off-peak season, which typically runs from June to September, coinciding with the monsoon season. During this time, you can expect fewer tourists, lower prices for accommodations, and a more relaxed atmosphere. However, the weather can be wet and humid, with heavy rainfall and rough sea conditions.

Nightlife : The best time to visit Goa for nightlife is during the peak tourist season, which runs from December to February. During this period, the weather is pleasant, and the party scene is in full swing, with numerous beach shacks, clubs, and bars hosting lively events, live music, and DJ sets. Goa is also home to popular electronic dance music festivals like the Sunburn Festival, which usually takes place in late December, attracting international DJs and partygoers from around the world.

Goa Travel Seasons

High Season (November to March) : Expect day after day of dry and warm weather. It is seldom uncomfortably hot or humid because of soothing coastal breezes but may be a little chilly for some after dark, so pack a light jumper. During the peak times of the peak season – mid-December to mid-January – hotel rates double (at least) and train and plane tickets should be booked way in advance.
Shoulder Season (April, May, and October) : Also a good time to come because tourist numbers and hotel rates are markedly lower than the peak months. While temperatures rise a little in the lead-up to the wet season, it’s still dry in April and May, but the monsoonal rain may linger into October.
Low Season (June to September) : Avoid the monsoon because it will rain heavily almost every day for hours and streets will get water-logged, possibly affecting travel plans (especially by train). What’s more, cyclones are prevalent at this time, so always be alert. The only redeeming features are the lack of tourists and dramatic drop in hotel rates, but note: some hotels and tourist facilities and attractions, including national parks, may close for some or all of the low season.

Goa Weather by Month

Goa Weather in January : Although Goa stretches about 100km along the coast, the weather is standard across the northern and southern regions. January is well into the dry winter. Average daytime temperatures are still warm at 32°C, but drop to 20°C overnight, prompting locals to wear jumpers. This is part of the peak season, especially over the Christmas/New Year period.
Goa Weather in February : Continuous warm and dry days; in fact, February is the third successive month of virtually no rain recorded. Perfect time, as the crowds have reduced noticeably from the previous 2 months.
Goa Weather in March : More dry and warm days, with almost no rain again officially recorded for the month. Terrific time to visit, especially if it coincides with Easter in this Christian part of the country.
Goa Weather in April : Another excellent month for visiting, especially during Easter. Perfect weather: an average of 33°C during the day and a warmish 25°C overnight, and the fifth straight month with almost no rainfall.
Goa Weather in May : Start of the pre-monsoon rains, most likely later in the month but unlikely to affect travel plans yet. Also, the hottest time of the year on average: 34°C/26°C during the day/night. Some tourist businesses may start to close down by the end of the month. Note: it’s far too dangerous to swim in the sea anytime from now until the end of October, and cyclones are possible for the next 5 months.
Goa Weather in June : Official start of the monsoon, coupled with a drop in average daytime temperatures (and humidity) to 30°C. Also, a sudden and dramatic increase in rainfall; the second-highest on average for the year (and 20 times more than May), with heavy downpours expected every day and cyclones always possible. Rain may affect travel plans, especially by bus or train, and more tourist businesses and national parks may close for a few months. Expect substantial discounts on hotel rates.
Goa Weather in July : Wettest month of the year as the heavy monsoon rains fall daily and cyclones are not uncommon. One of the highest monthly averages in India (about 1,200mm), so more hotels and other businesses (including national parks) may close until September/October as tourist numbers plummet. Roads may be water-logged, possibly affecting travel by bus and train, and the sea is still too dangerous for swimming.
Goa Weather in August : The end of the monsoon is near, but still expect plenty of rain and possible cyclones. There are considerably fewer downpours than the previous 2 months, although it will still rain most days. Average daytime/overnight temperatures have dropped to equal the lowest level for the year: 29°C/24°C.
Goa Weather in September : The monsoon season officially ends, but rain usually continues deep into September (and October). Although about one-quarter of the amount of rain from July, some roads might still be muddy and water-logged. Some businesses and national parks that closed during the wet season re-open this month. Even for a few weeks after the end of the monsoon, rips make swimming in the sea dangerous.
Goa Weather in October : Still some rain early in the month as the dry winter approaches, and swimming in the sea is no longer dangerous after the monsoon has gone. On average, a few degrees warmer than the previous 3 months: a warm 32°C during the day and 24°C overnight. Roads should have dried out by now and all businesses and national parks that closed for the wet season will have re-opened.
Goa Weather in November : With virtually no rain now or for the next 5 months, businesses are preparing for the return of tourists in large numbers. The warm days of 33°C on average continue, but overnight temperatures drop slightly to 22°C. Start of the festival season.
Goa Weather in December : Another perfect month of dry and warm days, which is the trend for the next 4 months. Crowds start increasing markedly, especially over Christmas and New Year, when hotel rates may double (at least) and tickets on planes and trains are hard to find. Prime time for festivals.

Goa Holidays, Events, and Festivals

India has the world’s second-largest population of Muslims (after Indonesia), but comparatively few live in Goa. Dates for these 4 major festivals change each year according to the Islamic calendar. Each is a public holiday, but few (if any) government offices or businesses will close: Eid-al-Fitr (end of Ramadan), Eid Mulid-un-Nabi (Prophet Mohammed’s Birthday), Muharram/Ashura (Islamic New Year), and Eid al-Adha/Zuha (often commemorated with the slaughter of goats). Because of its Portuguese heritage, Goa is overwhelmingly Christian, so major festivals celebrated elsewhere in India by Hindus are comparatively low-key, and those observed by Sikhs, Buddhists, and Jains are virtually non-existent.

Goa in January

New Year’s Day (1st) – Families and friends often visit each other, and live music and parties are usually held on the main beaches.
Feast of the Three Kings (usually 6th) – In various villages, boys re-enact the Christian tradition of the kings bringing gifts to baby Jesus.
Goa Sun Splash (second weekend) – Regarded as India’s largest reggae (and hip-hop) festival. For 3 days, usually at Mandrem beach.
Makara Sankranthi (14th or 15th) – Similar to Lohri, but celebrated more in Western India and Varanasi, marking the end of winter with lots of kite-flying.
International Kite Festival (14th & 15th) – Popular event celebrating the imminent end of winter. More serious than most places in India, and most vibrant at the Goan capital, Panaji.
Republic Day (26th) – Commemorates the adoption of the country’s constitution on January 26, 1950. Huge parades in Delhi, less restrained elsewhere. National holiday when all government offices and many tourist attractions close.

Goa in February

Goa Food and Cultural Festival (changeable, early February) – Five days showcasing Goan food, music, and traditional dance at the capital, Panaji.
(Maha) Shivaratri (changeable, February/March) – Day of fasting as a dedication to Lord Shiva, with ceremonies in temples. Public holiday, when some government offices and tourist attractions may close.
Goa Carnival (changeable, February/March) – Four days of music, dance, and colorful parades, often with locals wearing masks. Loads of fun and food, and particularly vibrant at Panaji, the capital.
Shigmotsav/Shigmo (changeable, February/March) – Goan version of the major Hindu festival of Holi when colored water and powder are thrown at everyone, including tourists. Five days of traditional songs, dances, and street parades.
Procession of All Saints (changeable, February/March) – Rare and solemn occasion during Lent. Parading of statues around various villages.

Goa in March

Rama Navami (changeable, March/April) – Celebrates Lord Rama’s birth. 9 days of music, dance, fasts, and feasts, and reading of the Ramayana (epic). One day is a public holiday when most government offices and some tourist attractions may close.
Easter (changeable, March/April) – Celebrated fervently over at least 4 days at most homes and all churches. Some businesses and government offices may close on Good Friday.
Gudi Padwa (changeable, March/April) – Traditional start of the Hindu New Year, celebrated by family visits, flying of a special flag, and spring-cleaning.

Goa in April

Ambedkar Jayanti/Bhim Jayanti (14th) – Celebrates the birth of late Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar, a leading historical figure. Public holiday, when some government offices and tourist attractions may close.
Feast of our Lady of Miracles (changeable, April/May) – Christian event renowned for the number of Hindus who attend. About 2 weeks after Easter in Mapusa town.
Beach Bonanza (Sundays from mid-April) – Plenty of music, dance, and fun at Colva beach.
Grape Escapade (changeable, late April) – Heaps of fun, including stomping of grapes and tasting of wine at Panaji, the capital.
Vesak/Buddha Purnima (changeable, April/May) – Solemn festivals at temples marking the birth and death of Gautama Buddha, founder of Buddhism.
Goa Heritage Festival Fatorda (changeable, first weekend in May) – 4-day festival with traditional music, handicraft stalls, and exhibitions at Margao town.

Goa in June

Feast of Saint Antony (13th) – Honoring Goa’s most revered saint. Also, prayers for the onset of the monsoon.
Sao Joao/Feast of Saint John the Baptist (23-24th) – Marking the baptism of this revered saint, devotees jump into lakes, ponds, and hotel swimming pools (but not the beach).
Feast of Saint Peter & Saint Paul (29th) – Another traditional festival of music and dance linked to the (hoped for) arrival of the monsoon. This occasion is mostly celebrated by fishermen.

Goa in July

Raksha Bandhan/Rakhi (changeable, July/August) – Hindu festival marking the importance of families, especially siblings. Commonly called Brother and Sister Day, where sisters tie colorful strings (Rakhis) on their brothers’ hands, and brothers give gifts in return.

Goa in August

Feast of Saint Lawrence (10th) – Dedicated to the patron saint of the poor. Also, linked to the (hoped for) end of the monsoon.
Independence Day (15th) – Celebrates India’s independence from Britain in 1947. The Prime Minister gives a rousing speech from the Red Fort. Patriotic time, with government buildings suitably decorated and ceremonies held, especially in Delhi. Also, a time for families to get together. National public holiday when all government offices and many tourist attractions close.
Bonderam (fourth Saturday) – Parades and mock battles on an island near Old Goa honoring fierce disputes of the past amongst villagers engaged in land disputes.
Janmashtami (changeable, August/September) – Celebrates the birth of Lord Krishna with offerings, fasting, and decorations of buildings.
(Haryali/Hartalika) Teej (changeable, August/September) – Celebrated as Tay or Tayi in Goa, and linked to the arrival of the monsoon and marriage of Goddess Parvati to Lord Shiva.
Ganesh Chaturthi (changeable, August/September) – Solemn occasion for a week or so commemorating the birth of the highly-revered elephant-headed God, Ganesha.

Goa in September

Chaitra Navratri (changeable, September/October) – Part of the lead up to Diwali. Also called the ‘Festival of Nine Nights’, it honors the revered Goddess Durga.
Dussehra (changeable, September/October) – Celebrates the victory of Lord Rama over Ravana, and the general battle of good over evil. Praying at temples, offerings of special food, and burning of Ravana’s effigies. Public holiday, when some government offices and tourist attractions may close.

Goa in October

Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti (2nd) – Sombre occasion commemorating the birthday of the country’s founding father, Mahatma Gandhi. National holiday, when all government offices and many tourist attractions close.
Narkasur (changeable, October/November) – On the night before Diwali/Deepavali (see below), giant effigies are paraded around the streets and then burnt.
Diwali/Deepavali (changeable, October/November) – Major 5-day festival of lights, candles, and fireworks. Busy time for travel because it’s celebrated by Hindus, Buddhists, Jains, and Sikhs. One day is a public holiday when some government offices and tourist attractions may close.

Goa in November

Goa International Jazz Live Festival (late November) – Two days of foot-tapping new-age music by artists from across India and elsewhere. Attended by thousands from across the globe. (Check for location.)
International Film Festival of India (IFFI) (late November) – Major celebration of visual arts at the capital, Panaji. Attracts Bollywood’s biggest and brightest for a week-long screening of blockbusters, including international films.

Goa in December

Feast of Saint Francis Xavier’s (3rd) – Major pilgrimage honoring the death of Goa’s patron saint. For 10 days around Old Goa; several stalls are set up and roads are closed. The preserved body of the saint is displayed once every 10 years, the next exposition being in 2024.
Feast of Our Lady of Immaculate Conception (8-10th) – Held at the iconic whitewashed church in Panaji, the capital. Three days of dancing, music, stalls, and fireworks.
Goa Arts & Literature Festival (early December) – Musicians, writers, and artists converge to meet, share, and display over several days at the capital, Panaji.
Goa Liberation Day (19th) – Celebrates the independence of Goa from Portuguese rule. Military parades through the capital, Panaji.
Serendipity Arts Festival (late December) – A week of music, crafts, and food at the capital, Panaji. Often outdoors and along Mandovi River.
Christmas (25th) – Celebrated reverently by Christians at homes and churches, while tourists like to party for the next week or so.
Sunburn Festival (27-30th) – Goa’s most popular music festival for young people, timed for the peak period between Christmas and New Year. International DJs strut their stuff around Vagator beach.
New Year’s Eve (31st) – Celebrated more wildly than elsewhere in India, especially by tourists. Parties on most beaches and fireworks all night.

Goa is one of the busiest tourist destinations in all of India. But the experience of visiting Goa greatly varies based on when you visit it. So in this article, I am going to tell you the best time to visit Goa, the month-wise weather in Goa and the activities available for tourists based on when you visit Goa.

The best time to visit Goa is between November and February. The maximum temperature during these months ranges between 25°C and 34°C while the minimum ranges between 10°C and 22°C. There is almost no rain during this period. All the tourist activities are also open during these months.

But what about other months? What if you want to visit Goa between March and October? Is it a bad idea or is it worth considering? What should you expect if you visit Goa during its high season and how different is Goa during the low season?

Best time to visit Goa: Quick Overview

The months between November and February are considered to be winter months in Goa and are therefore the best time to visit Goa.
Even though the maximum temperature ranges between 5°C and 34°C and the minimum ranges between 10°C and 22°C , the weather is still very pleasant.
There is usually no rain in Goa during this period and therefore the humidity is also far lower than that in other months.
This period is also called the tourist high-season. This is the time when the beach shacks are open, parties are organised all over town and flea markets are open in full swing. Hotels and resorts enjoy a high occupancy rate.
The overall pricing of stay, food and other activities is higher compared to the summer months of Goa.

Quick Note for Goa High Season 2022-23

Given that tourism suffered majorly in Goa during the last two years owing to restrictions and curfews, the high season in Goa in 2022-23 is expected to see a massive influx of tourists. Goan shacks, restaurants, cafes, clubs, party places and flea markets are expected to operate with full capacity and without restrictions for the first time after 3 years.

Expect huge crowds but also an electric holiday atmosphere – the kind that every travel deprived tourist has been craving for the last few years. What to expect

Most popular hotels, hostels and resorts are full at this time. Book at least a two months in advance to secure a booking.
The period between Christmas and New Year’s is the highest touristic season in Goa. Accommodation is particularly expensive during this period. The pricing of accommodation comes down considerably by the 2nd week of January.

Goa in Summer

Period: March to May

Weather conditions Temperature: High: 35°C Low: 25°C Precipitation/Rain: 0-30% (Chances of rain are mostly in May)

Indoor cafes and restaurants
Wildlife sanctuaries (For safaris) and springs
Beaches and forts around sunset

Places to avoid in Goa during summer

Outdoor places like beaches and forts as the sun is scorching
Most tourist attractions are open during this period. Hotels and resorts enjoy a relatively lower occupancy. (Except in May, when families visit on account of school summer vacations). Accommodation is much cheaper.
Even though there’s little difference during the summer and winter temperatures, the sun is much harsher. Staying outdoor between 10 am and 5 pm is not advisable.
The flea market at Vagator, Arpora (hasn’t reopened since 2020) and a few nightclubs are shut.

Goa in Monsoon

Period: June to October

Weather conditions Temperature: High: 30°C Low: 22°C Precipitation/Rain: 100% (lesser in early June and October)

Avoid visiting Goa around Republic Day i.e. 26th January as many tourists from Mumbai visit Goa for a quick holiday.

Goa in February

Cheaper than December
Much less crowded than the rest of the high season
Easier to get accommodation reservations and book activity tours.
Not as vibrant as Goa in December, fewer parties
Days can start to feel hot (Especially in the second half) leaving little room for outdoor activities
February is the best time to visit North Goa as the crowds begin to disappear. With everything open, North Goa feels a lot more charming during this period.

Goa in March

Extremely cheap and less crowded
Not at all vibrant, fewer parties
Hot weather
March is a great time to explore the interiors of Goa for its waterfalls and natural beauty.
Visit the beaches in the evening for pleasant weather
March is one of the driest month in Goa and the most ideal for kayaking, watersports, island tours. Plan them around sunrise or before sunset.

Goa in April

Moderately priced accommodation and other activities
Easier to get accommodation reservations and book activity tours if you are travelling in the first half of the year.
Not at all vibrant, hardly any parties
The Easter weekend in Goa attracts massive crowds who visit the churches in Old Goa. Visit if you want to see how locals celebrate this festival.
Visit the beaches in the evening for pleasant weather. Engage in watersports strictly around sunset.
Avoid dolphin tours or other longer duration outdoor tours. Sun is extremely harsh in April in Goa.

All activities, markets, clubs remain open in the first half of the month
Very hot and humid with considerable chances of rain in the second half of may
Plenty of Indian tourists visit due to it being the month of school vacations
Visiting outdoor attractions is a challenge due to harsh heat and extreme humidity
Book your trip around March as family-friendly accommodations in prime tourist areas fill up fast.
Visit the wildlife sanctuaries and natural springs. Excellent period for bird and animal sighting.
Avoid dolphin tours or other longer duration outdoor tours. Sun is extremely harsh in May in Goa.
If you are not travelling with family, stay away from family-centric areas like Candolim, Calangute, Colva and Baga.

Goa in June

Accommodation, commute and local attractions cost much less
Very easy to get accommodation all across Goa without advance booking
Cooler weather than summer months. Lush greenery around and very picturesque.
Rainfall is not as heavy as in the next few months.
Very humid when it doesn’t rain with high chances of rain from the second half of June
Most beach shacks, watersport activities, adventure sport centers, party places shut.
Difficult to ride around town on a two-wheeler because of the rains.
The festival of Sao Joao takes place in June. Locals jump into ponds, wells, etc. to celebrate – definitely worth experiencing.
Visit the wildlife sanctuaries and natural springs. Excellent period for bird and animal sighting. The waterfalls are also gushing and very scenic.
Take the Konkan Railway to travel to Goa to experience the natural beauty of Konkan during monsoons.
Perfect time to plan a workation to Goa.

Goa in July

Accommodation, commute and local attractions are much cheaper than the rest of the year
Goa is at its greenest best, very calm and soothing.
Much cooler weather due to heavy rainfall
Very few tourists in town
Continuous rainfall makes sightseeing very difficult
An ideal time to visit indoor places like museums, temples, churches, etc.
Visit the wildlife sanctuaries and natural springs when it is not raining heavily.
Best way to make the most of the weather is by heading out on a monsoon trek.
Try out popular indoor cafés and restaurants. They are not at all crowded and the ambience is magical.

Goa in August

Accommodation, commute and local attractions are cheaper than the rest of the year
Goa is at very green, calm and soothing.
Cool weather when it rains
Ongoing rainfall makes sightseeing difficult. Weather is also too humid when it doesn’t rain.
Best way to make the most of the weather is by heading out on a monsoon trek. (especially: Dudhsagar waterfall trek)
Avoid the Independence day week (15th August) as it can get a bit crowded due to tourists visiting from nearby cities for a short getaway.

Goa in September

Moderately priced accommodation.
Much less rainfall allows for more outdoor sightseeing
Weather is relatively cooler than summer months
Temporary shacks continue to remain shut. Watersport activities also do not resume.
Commuting on a two-wheeler would be difficult during rainy spells.
Excellent time to stay in the heritage properties or villas which are cheaper and more pleasant during this period.
Visit the wildlife sanctuaries, natural springs and waterfalls

Weather – Goa in Monsoon is home to frequent rain showers, subtle drizzle with a chance of thunderstorm. With the scent of the salty sea mixing with the earthy aroma that comes with the rains, Goa is a treat for all the nature-lovers out there. While the days are humid, the nights provide some relief by being cool and pleasant.

Significant events – A little rain never dampened the spirit of Goa. Festivals and events exist in abundance to entertain both locals and tourists coming from all over the globe to this Party State. Goa is not a place but a state of mind. One of the main highlights of this time of the year is the Patolleanchem Feast which is a treat for those who have a sweet tooth. Patollea is a dish that is made out of coconut, jaggery and rice. Not just this delicacy, this festival that is celebrated on 15 August also has local handicrafts on display all through the day. Another festival that is celebrated during this time of the year is Bonderam celebrated at the Divar island, 12 kilometres from Panjim. This festival comprises energetic crowds donning brightly coloured costumes accompanied by some music. Here, berries and toys created from bamboo stems are used to knock down some flags as a mockery of the days of conflict between the districts of a village during the Portuguese era.

One of the major drawbacks of going to Goa during this time of year are the monsoons. They can put a dampener on your vacation, literally.

It will rain a lot, but there are some things going on including the fertility feast of Saint John the Baptist. During this festival, men jump into wells to grab bottles of alcohol. It’s really quite interesting.

Looking for the best January holiday destinations ? Then a holiday to Goa is perfect as this is probably the most popular time and the best season to visit Goa.

If you cannot travel during January then any months from October to February will offer you similar weather.

The rains have diminished and it’s warm, but not too hot, at an average temperature of around 21 degrees Celsius.

Because these months offer the best weather to visit Goa, it is also the busiest time of year to visit Goa.

Many like to take part in various water sports like parasailing and jet skiing. It’s quite a lively time during the winter and those who like to enjoy the party scene tend to enjoy it.

Imposing Dudhsagar Falls is located on the fringe of the Mollem National Park. Water rages down from a huge height during the monsoon season but the waterfall is off limits to tourists for safety reasons. Tambdi Sula waterfall in Bhagwan Mahavir Sancturary is an alternative. It requires a steep uphill trek though, which keeps most people away. You'll definitely need a guide because the trail isn't marked. This is one option for a guided day trip . While there, you can also visit the ancient 12th century Mahadev Temple, believed to be the oldest Hindu temple in Goa.

Mhadei Wildlife Sanctuary is a lesser-known place in the Swapnagandha Valley of northeast Goa, near Valpoi. An unusual attraction in this sanctuary during the monsoon season is bio-luminescent fungi called Mycena that glows in the dark. White water rafting, and hiking around Vagheri Hills and Chorla Ghat, are popular things to do. There are quite a few waterfalls in the area, with Vazra Sakla Falls at Chorla Ghat being the biggest.

Trekking to Mynapi and Savri waterfalls in Netravali Wildlife Sanctuary, in southeast Goa, is possible during the monsoon. However, canyoning and abseiling around the Upper Sauri region are usually suspended.

Bondla Wildlife Sanctuary , the smallest but most accessible sanctuary in Goa, is ideal for families. It's conveniently situated near Ponda and has nature trails, botanical gardens, an animal rehabilitation center, mini zoo and deer safari park.

Getting There

Goa is well connected to the rest of India by all types of transport. However, the bus can be slow and uncomfortable (here are the best options though), so try to fly or take the train where possible. Prepaid taxis are available at the airport in Goa.

Trains on the Konkan Railway can cover the distance from Mumbai to Goa in less than 10 hours. Most trains will stop at Margao (Madgaon), which is Goa's main train station. Language : Konkani is the local language of Goa. Apart from that, English is widely spoken here. Keep in mind that locals aren't well-versed in Hindi.
ATMS : There are ample ATMs in the cities. However, finding ATMs may be difficult in the villages and in areas farther away from the main cities.
Petrol Pumps : The situation with petrol pumps is the same as that with ATMs.
Currency Exchange : You will find counters at the Goa International Airport and various exchange shops in the cities as well as in the tourist hot-spot areas.

The answer depends on how much of Goa you want to see. In order to explore all of Goa in-depth, you will need at least 10-14 days in Goa. However, you can cover the major sightseeing spots in Goa within 3-4 days.

My personal suggestion is that you should spend 5-7 days in Goa to get its feel and cover some of the major sightseeing spots, beaches and everything else that Goa has to offer.

Goa is the most popular beach destination in India. Thousands of tourists - local as well as foreigners arrive in Goa on a daily basis. Thus, Goa is very well connected by flights, trains and road.

Goa has one airport - the Goa International Airport which is located at Dabolim in South Goa. The Goa airport has direct flights flying between Goa and major Indian cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Kolkata, to name a few. Furthermore, the airport connects Goa to many international cities as well. Both Panjim and Margao cities are located at a distance of roughly 27 km from the Goa airport in opposite directions.

Goa has 3 main railway stations - Margao, Vasco-da-Gama and Thivim. Margao railway station in South Goa is the main hub which is connected by an extensive railway network to other parts of India. Margao or Madgaon railway station to Panaji is a distance of roughly 37 km.

One can very easily find buses to Goa from metropolitan cities such as Mumbai, Bangalore, Pune, Hyderabad etc on the redbus website. Moreover, there are state run buses such as Kadamba Transport Corporation (KTC), Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC), and Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) between Goa and neighbouring states of Karnataka and Maharashtra. Alternatively, taking a road trip to Goa from Maharashtra, Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu is an option that many tourists prefer to take. The drive to Goa is scenic and there are many beautiful stops along the way.

Goa has two main seasons - the tourist season (also known as the “on” season) between October and April and the monsoon season (or the “off” season) from May to September.

The dry or the “on” season is the best time to visit Goa. This is when beach shacks are set up across most beaches in Goa, lots of events and festivals going on and the entire place is a gala feast. Plan a Goa trip during the “on” season if you want to attend events, parties and meet other travellers.

On the other hand, the monsoon season is a time when most of the Goa beaches are nearly empty and there’s very little going on. This is the time to visit Goa is you’re looking for greenery and peace and quiet.

So how much will a Goa trip cost you? The answer completely depends on how flexible your budget is.

If you’re looking to make a budget trip to Goa, then staying at hostels, eating at authentic Goan restaurants and taking local buses to get around Goa will save you a whole lot of money.

If you have a mid-range budget then you can very easily find budget and mid-range hotels in Goa. You can hire a two-wheeler instead of a cab and eat at mid-range restaurants.

On the other hand, if you're willing to splurge then you can stay at a nice resort, eat at upscale restaurants and travel around Goa in a hired cab.

Goa, being a popular backpacking destination, has many-a backpacker hostels scattered throughout the state. Most hostels in Goa are located in North Goa - near Vagator, Anjuna, Candolim and Arambol. Similarly, there are hostels at the popular beaches in South Goa as well. A bed in a dorm will typically cost between INR 400 and INR 800.

Goa Tourism Hotels

If you’re looking for hotels that provide the bare minimum comfort and amenities on a limited budget, then look into the Goa tourism hotels. There are hotels run by the state government located in Panaji, Old Goa, Calangute, Mapusa, Colva and a few other places in Goa. Book rooms at the Goa tourism hotels on the GTDC website .

While North Goa has quite a few resorts, I highly recommend staying at a resort in South Goa. This is due to the fact that South Goa sees a fewer number of visitors as compared to North Goa which makes staying there all the more peaceful and serene. That being said, there are peaceful hotels in North Goa as well. Take Doubletree by Hilton Panaji for example (shown in the picture above). This hotel, located on the outskirts of Panjim, has sweeping views of the Goan rivers and islands as seen from the infinity pool and rooms. Hiring a two-wheeler is the most popular and budget-friendly way to get around Goa. it’s a well-known and unfortunate fact that taxi prices in Goa are sky-high. This is the reason why renting a two-wheeler is an affordable and rather fun way to see Goa. A scooter typically costs INR 200-250 for a day whereas renting a motorbike such as Royal Enfield for a day will cost above INR 300. Unlike most of North India, you have the freedom to wear whatever you like in Goa. There are no restrictions on clothing items when it comes to choosing what to wear in Goa. 1. Visit the Forts in Goa

Before the Portuguese invaded Goa in the 1500s, Goa was under the rule of the Muslim ruler Adil Shah. While Adil Shah built a number of forts for himself, after the Portuguese takeover, they modified some forts to suit their needs. Thus every fort in Goa has a rich cultural and architectural significance. Chapora Fort , Aguada Fort , Tiracol Fort, and Reis Magos Fort are the forts located in North Goa. On the other hand, Cabo de Rama Fort is a well-known fort located in the South Goa district. Each of these forts offers spectacular views of the ocean. While Chapora fort and Cabo de Rama fort don’t have any timings, since they are cliff-top ruined forts, Aguada fort and Reis Magos fort are open from the morning till 5.30 pm in the evening. Tiracol Fort, on the contrary, has been converted to the Fort Tiracol Heritage Hotel . 2. Take a Ferry Boat to an Island

Most tourists coming to Goa think of it as a beach destination. While this may be true, there is lots more to do in Goa that’s beyond the beaches. There are two main islands in Goa - Divar Island and Chorao Island . Both of these islands can be reached by taking a ferry from Ribandar, which lies on the road between Panaji and Old Goa. Chorao Island is famously known for the Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary. You can hire a little boat, watch the mangrove, spot birds and enjoy a languid boat ride in the Goan rivers.

3. Explore Waterfalls

Dudhsagar waterfall , located on the Goa-Karnataka border is a 4-tiered, 3-streamed, 320 m high waterfall. Apart from being surrounded by a lush forest, the waterfall also contains natural pools to wade into the waters. You can reach the mighty Dudhsagar waterfalls by either completing a trek to the bottom of the walls or by going via the government-approved jeep rides that start from Molem. The waterfall has been named after its milky appearance and is a worthwhile day trip from Panjim, which is located 60 km away. Other than that, there are tons of other smaller, albeit beautiful, waterfalls scattered across Goa.

4. See the Churches

Goa was under the Portuguese rule for over 450 years from the 1500’s until 19 December 1961. Due to this reason, there are striking churches scattered all across Goa. While the Panjim church and the Old Goa church are the two famous churches in Goa, it’s the offbeat ones that steal the heart away. The Mae De Deus church and the Siolim riverside chapel are both exquisite and worth exploring!

5. Visit Old Goa

While Old Goa may be known for the Old Goa church, there is, in fact, a lot more to do in Old Goa that only the locals know about. Whether it’s a hilltop chapel with a view of the river and islands, a hauntingly beautiful ruined church complex or a restaurant right next to the river, Old Goa has lots waiting to be discovered. Panjim or Panaji is the ever-lively capital city of Goa. While one might wonder if there’s hardly anything to do in Panjim, as a matter of fact, there are lots of things to do in Panjim. The South Goa beaches are the laid-back beaches in Goa. As someone who has been living in Goa for over 13 years, I prefer the South Goa beaches as opposed to the North Goa beaches because of the lesser crowds and the pristine nature of the beaches. North Goa Beaches

While the South Goa beaches are peaceful, the North Goa beaches are always a happening place to be at. Whether it’s a taste of the hippie culture, the best beach shacks, karaoke bars and beach clubs, you’ll find it all at the North Goa beaches. Take a look at some of my personal favourites as well as the crowd favourite North Goa beaches:

1. Arambol Beach

Did you know that Goa was a raging hippie paradise back in the ’70s? The first hippies arrived in Goa in the 1970s and settled onto the North Goa beaches of Arambol, Vagator and Anjuna. While Vagator and Anjuna are more commercialised tourist beaches, Arambol still retains the hippie spirit. Whether it’s vegan cafes, yoga centres, hippie stuff (you know what I mean), you’ll find Arambol to be the perfect hippie paradise even today. While you’re at Arambol, do not miss other great nearby beaches of Ashwem, Mandrem and Morjim, which are less popular but equally beautiful.

2. Vagator Beach

In case you’re looking for a beach that has a hippie touch yet commercialised to the extent that you’ll find nice places to stay and good restaurants and cafes nearby, Vagator should be the beach of your choice. Vagator is a bustling area that’s known for the very famous Chapora fort aka the Dil Chahta Hai fort. You’ll find lots of hotels, hostels, upscale restaurants, cafes, shops and everything else in close proximity to the beach.

3. Anjuna Beach

Anjuna beach is yet another one of the North Goa beaches that’s on the way to becoming highly commercialised (read: Baga beach). Anjuna has some of the best restaurants and cafes in all of Goa. You can easily spend a whole day in Anjuna just eating at the beachside restaurants or exploring cafes nested in the tiny lanes of Anjuna.

My insider’s guide to Goa would be incomplete if I didn’t touch upon this extremely important subject. When it comes to trying food in Goa, there’s no one list that anyone can prepare. Goa is home to so many wonderful restaurants and cafes, with new places coming up regularly that it’s hard to keep track of all the places to eat in Goa.

Nonetheless, I’ve put together 3 rough guides to Goa’s food scene. Of the three, this list of the best North Goa restaurants and cafes is perhaps the most popular of them all. Coming to Panjim city, check out this guide to the best restaurants in Panaji city . Finally, if you’re in the vicinity of the airport and need to refuel, take a look at the best restaurants near Goa airport .

Goa has a raging nightlife that consists of nightclubs, beach clubs, karaoke bars, pubs. Pool parties, rave parties and everything else in between. There are plenty of nightclubs in the Baga-Candolim region such as LPK , Titos , etc that play Bollywood and Punjabi hits to cater to a North Indian crowd. Meanwhile, places like Favella and Soro are much classier establishments that come with a dining experience along with foot-tapping English hits. Moreover, they even have themed nights every once in a while.

Coming to Panjim city, Soho and Cafe Mojo are the favourite pubs among the locals.

Going down south, Silent Noise in Palolem is well-known for the Saturday night parties where you dance to music while wearing headphones. In any case, you’ll find nightlife in Goa quite easily at almost every corner.

Apart from boutique stores and beach-side markets, there are quite a few flea markets in Goa. When it comes to the most popular Goa flea market, the Arpora Saturday night market tops the list. This market is held every Saturday night during the “on” season in Arpora which is located close to Anjuna and Calangute. This market has everything ranging from clothes, bags, jewellery, shoes, art and handmade artefacts. Furthermore, there are performances such as fire eaters and dancers along with live music and plenty of food stalls to choose from. Apart from this, there are lots of other markets like the Anjuna Wednesday flea market that are set-up in the tourist season.

Things to do in Panjim - events - Goa carnival

The Goa Carnival is one of the most popular events to take place in Goa. The carnival parades are held at multiple Goan cities like Panaji, Margao, Vasco-da-Gama, and Ponda over a span of a few days late in the month of February.

IFFI (International Film Festival of India) which is held every year in the state capital Panaji sees many movie screenings and talks attended by Bollywood as well as local celebrities.

Coming to art festivals, Serendipity Art Festival is as big as it gets. This festival is held in the month of December at various venues in Panjim city.

While there are many events music festivals held in Goa, Sunburn , which is held late in December, is the most famous of them all that sees well-known international DJs and singers perform.

Even though this is a complete Goa travel guide to let you plan your own Goa trip, I do have a suggested itinerary for you. While I strongly suggest spending AT LEAST a week in Goa, tourists choose to spend anywhere between 2 days to months in Goa.

Goa has so much to offer than just beaches and crazy parties. India’s favourite holiday destination used to almost shut down completely during the monsoon season, but visiting Goa in monsoon is becoming more popular every year so nowadays more and more places are staying open for the rainy season.

Visiting Goa in monsoon is a totally different experience than in season time – some even say that Goa is at it’s most beautiful during the rainy season ! As people start to discover the joys of exploring Goa in off season I thought it was about time I wrote a post with everything you need to know about visiting Goa in monsoon!

My Insider’s Guide to Visiting Goa in Monsoon

As I’ve lived in Goa since 2015 I’ve seen the seasons come and go more than a few times now so in this blog post, my guide to visiting Goa in monsoon, I’ll cover everything you need to know.

From when the monsoon season occurs and what the weather is like, pros and cons of visiting during monsoon, where to stay in Goa in monsoon, unique things to do during the rainy season, and more tips so that you can decide whether visiting Goa in the off season is right for you.

So Should you Visit Goa in Monsoon?

More and more people are discovering that Goa is actually an all year round destination. But should you visit Goa during the rainy season? It’s a difficult question to answer because it depends on what you are looking for from your Goa trip.

Yes! If you enjoy the romance of the rains, the drama of the thunderstorms, seeing the countryside erupt in impossibly bright shades of green, the waterfalls in full flow and enjoy a relaxing escape from the crowds then definitely visit Goa during monsoon – even if you have visited Goa in the season time many times, monsoon is a totally different experience.

No! But if you are looking for endless hot and sunny days of sunbathing on the beaches, visiting the flea markets , swimming, watersports and wild parties then don’t come to Goa during monsoon because you won’t be able to do most of these things.

Wait to visit Goa during the main tourist season between December and April when Goa is sunny and dry, the sea is safe and beautiful for swimming, all the markets and parties are open and the state is buzzing with people and nightlife to enjoy, especially around New Years.

When is Goa’s Monsoon Season and What’s the Weather Like?

The first thing you’ll need to know when planning any Goa monsoon trip is when the monsoon season arrives, when is the best time to visit and what’s it’s really like in Goa during the rains…

The weather has gotten more and more unpredictable in recent years but Goa has two distinct seasons that you can plan your travel around. The main, peak season for tourism, when most people consider the best time to visit Goa, is the dry season from November – April.

The off season is still considered to be from May – October. May is an unbearably hot, humid, dusty and dry month but the monsoon rains that arrive in early June bring much needed relief.

The Indian monsoon normally arrives in Kerala on 1st June and hits Goa about a week later around 6th June. Watching the first huge thunderstorms storms roll in is quite dramatic and a lot of fun. It’s such a relief when the skies finally open after months of heat and humidity.

Sao Joao is a Catholic festival, a fertility feast and birthday of Saint John the Baptist, which is celebrated on 24 th June with music, dancing and food as well as colourful floats on the river and people jumping into wells!

Monsoon in Goa is in full swing through June, July and August, with June and July being the wettest months. By mid June the landscape turns lush and green and vibrant again – it’s so beautiful to see after months of dust.

But unlike the rainy season in Southeast Asia, where you often just get a few hours downpour in the afternoon that you can plan your day around, Goa’s rains are much more unpredictable.

Sometimes it can pour down with rain for days on end without stopping and often the power goes off during these storms, sometimes for 6 or more hours at a time. Some paddy fields and lie lowing areas can sometimes get flooded but it usually clears up quite quickly once the rain has stopped.

August also sees alot of rain but if you want to party then the Independence Day holiday on the 15 th August is a good time to visit Goa. By the end of August and into September there should be plenty of sunny intervals between the rains.

This is a beautiful time to visit Goa as the landscapes are so lush and green from the rains but with less frequent downpours making traveling and sightseeing easier.

While September and October are at the end of the monsoon the weather remains unpredictable. Sometimes it’s mostly sunny and dry but some years it can still rain alot which is why the peak tourist season, which coincides with the dry season, doesn’t start until November. Ganesh Chaturthi is also observed in Goa in August or September.

Goa’s tropical climate means it’s never really cold, even in monsoon, although it is refreshingly cooler than in the hot season.

The average high temperature in Goa in monsoon is between 28°C and 30°C, while the average low is around 24°C with August being the coolest month.

The humidity can be from 60 – 95% though so while you’ll need to bring raincoats and umbrellas you’ll still need to bring light and cool clothing too.

The Pros and Cons of Visiting Goa in Monsoon

There are pros and cons to visiting Goa during the rainy season. Some say that Goa is most beautiful during monsoon – the landscapes are so lush and green, there are alot less crowds.

The rain washes the dust away and brings the heat down and nature starts to flourish again making it the rainy season the best time to visit Goa for nature lovers.

Most of the beach shacks and beach huts are all taken down so you can enjoy a long walks along the unspoilt empty virgin beaches and the cloudy skies can make for spectacular sunsets.

But, if your idea of the perfect Goa trip is all about relaxing in a beach resort , sunbathing on the beaches, swimming in calm seas and enjoying watersports and parties then monsoon is not the best time to visit Goa – the sea is often too rough and dangerous to swim in and many places are closed.

The Advantages of Visiting Goa in Monsoon Season:

Lush, green, beautiful scenery
Lower prices and less crowds
See a more local side of life
A great time to explore the countryside, waterfalls, spice plantations and wildlife sanctuaries
Or just relax, spend time with loved ones and watch the rain – The storms and rains can be quite dramatic and amazing to watch.

The Disadvantages of Visiting Goa in Monsoon Season:

Weather can be unpredictable, heavy rain, thunderstorms and power cuts are likely
Cyclones and flooding, while not common, could happen and would disrupt your travels.
The seas are too rough for swimming and watersports do not operate
Many places shut outside the main tourist season meaning that there is not so much variety of accommodation, restaurants, shopping and partying options available. The tourist markets are not open either – only the local markets.

Where to Stay in Goa in Monsoon

You’ll want to think carefully about where to stay in Goa in monsoon as not everywhere is open like it is in the dry season.

Most of the beach shacks and beach huts have to be taken down for monsoon and the night markets, flea markets, watersports and many parties cannot open in the rains, so you need to bear this mind if you’re planning to visit Goa in monsoon.

Thunderstorms and heavy rains also mean long power cuts, flooded roads and fields so choose your accommodation carefully, avoid low budget hotels, use a car instead of a scooter or motorbike and make sure you stay in a modern apartment or luxury resort with proper power back up and AC to make sure you have a good experience!

Seriously, sometimes the power can go off for days especially at the start of monsoon so don’t underestimate the importance of a good power back up. Whatever accommodation you book double check they have power back up and that it works!

Monsoon is the perfect time to relax and spend time with loved ones and enjoying walks on the quiet beaches and exploring the luscious green countryside.

The rainy season is also a great time to splash out on a bit of luxury as you can get great monsoon deals on luxury resorts , especially in South Goa, perfect for a family holiday or couples trip.

The luxury resorts make a great place to relax and watch the rains in comfort and luxury for a super special experience safe in the knowledge that you won’t be plunged into darkness with the next downpour.

The Best Luxury Resorts for Monsoon

South goa: alila diwa, majorda.

My favourite resort in South Goa for monsoon is the Alila Diwa, Majorda . This beautiful Bali inspired 5 star luxury resort is even more stunning in monsoon. Watching the rains bring the green paddy fields to life from the infinity pool is just bliss.

Plus there’s an excellent spa, 3 dining options, 2 bars and a butler service the Club rooms. So, apart from romantic walks in the rain along the empty beaches, you don’t really to need to leave the resort if you don’t want to!

My favourite resort in North Goa is The W, Vagator . This luxury 5 star resort has an amazing location perched overlooking Vagator Beach directly underneath Chapora Fort. The W has some of the most beautiful, uniquely designed, spacious rooms in Goa.

The sunset views over the beach from the rock pool and cocktail bar are just amazing. The W has so many facilities including a spa and fitness center, boutique shops, play area and several pools and dinning options so you don’t need to leave the resort but it’s also close to Anjuna and Baga if you want to check out the parties and attractions there.

Baga Beach, Calangute Beach and Candolim Beach

If you’re traveling to Goa with a group of friends and looking for Goa’s famous nightlife then the best places to stay in Goa in monsoon are Baga, Calangute and Candolim.

These are the most developed beaches in Goa so more things stay open during the rainy season. It can be quite busy at weekends, although nowhere near as busy as it is in season time (for me, this is definitely a good thing!)

If you are looking for some nightlife and partying in the rainy season then Baga is your best bet as the bars and clubs around Tito’s Lane stay open all year.

Best Luxury Stay: The Taj Fort Aguada, Candolim Beach

The best place to stay in this area is undoubtedly The Taj Fort Aguada, Candolim . The colourful and luxurious heritage style cottages are surrounded by luscious tropical gardens and located on the most picturesque spot on upmarket Candolim Beach.

So you can soak up the stunning ocean views as the clouds gather over the ocean while still being close to all the action in Baga and Calangute. As it’s a 5 star Taj property you can expect nothing less than unparalleled hospitality.

Best Budget Stay: Wave Calangute Beach Resort

There’s lots of budget options in Baga and Calangute but don’t let your trip be ruined by staying somewhere without power backup! A good value place to stay is Wave Calangute Beach Resort .

These fully equipped modern AC 1 and 2 BHK apartments have 100% power back up and can comfortably sleep upto 8 people so it’s great for families and groups of friends. There’s nice gardens and a pool to hang out at and close to Calangute, Baga and Candolim.

Anjuna Beach and Vagator Beach

There’s also some things open in Anjuna and Vagator including the famous Curlies beach shack which stays open during the rains and sometimes has parties on.

Hilltop nightclub has a popular Freedom Blast psytrance rave party on Independence Day too. The popular Artjuna Café stays open during monsoon, Chapora Fort is super atmospheric in the rains and the famous Thalassa restaurant is now open throughout the year too.

Best Nature Experience

One of the best things to do in rainy season is explore the spice plantations, waterfalls and nature sanctuaries that are at their most beautiful thanks to the rains.

Nature lovers and those wanting an off beat experience should stay at Dudhsagar Plantation Farmstay for a unique experience deep in Goa’s countryside.

The location offers a convenient base from which to visit everywhere in Goa and it’s only 40 mins from the airport.

The Best Things to do and Places to Visit in Goa During Monsoon

Monsoon brings a whole different range of things to do and places to visit that will allow you to explore a totally different side to the state from the famous beaches and parties that Goa is best known for.

For nature, culture and history lovers, and all those who do not like crowds, monsoon is probably the best time for you to visit Goa as the nature is at it’s most beautiful and the cultural and historic sights are not crowded.

I’d recommend spending at least 3 days in Goa so you’ll have time to relax and enjoy as well as explore some of the best places and things to do here.

Waterfalls, Wildlife Sanctuaries and Spice Plantations

Visiting the waterfalls, wildlife sanctuaries and spice plantations are some of the best things to do in Goa during monsoon. Goa’s wildlife sanctuaries are open all year round and offer a peaceful escape in nature that you wouldn’t normally associate India’s party capital!

Dudhsagar Falls, India’s second highest waterfall, is Goa’s most famous spot for nature lovers. To see it you need take a bumpy jeep ride deep into jungle in the very far Eastern corner of Goa. During season time you can swim in the refreshing waters at the bottom of the waterfall but it is quite a crowded and popular spot. The waterfall is best viewed just after the monsoon however during monsoon Dudhsagar is not open for tourists due to safety concerns.

But there are many other waterfalls you can check out. Tambdi Sula waterfall is one of the best waterfalls. It’s located inside the Bhagwan Mahavir Sanctuary , Goa largest wildlife reserve and requires an uphill trek to reach it but it’s worth it. You can also visit the Mahadev Temple, an ancient 12th century temple that is the oldest Hindu temple in Goa and is located within the same park.

Mhadei Wildlife Sanctuary is located near Valpol in the Chorla Ghats region and is famous for its twin waterfalls – Vazra Sakla and Virdi Falls, Shivling Waterfall and Charavane Waterfall. If you want to stay nearby check out The Wildernest Nature Resort an amazing nature retreat complete with infinity pool overlooking the jungle.

Cotiago Wildlife Sanctuary, located close to popular Palolem Beach, is home to Kuske Waterfall and a 25 meter high tree house viewing platform. Another top thing to do in Goa in monsoon is visiting the Spice Plantations. Head out to Ponda to explore Goa’s Hindu Heartland and visit the temples and spice farms. Goa’s spice farms are a chance to be enveloped in beautiful, luscious greenery and you’re sure to be in awe of nature when you find out how many different properties plants can contain and how many illnesses and ailments they can treat.

The best spice farms are Sahakari Spice Farm, Savoi Spice Plantation, Tropical Spice Plantation, Pascoal Organic Spice Village and Tansikar Spice Farm. The admission price includes an informative tour, buffet lunch and a small sample of some spices.

An easy day trip from Panjim, Dr. Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary on Chorao Island is a must for bird lovers. Take a canoe trip through the mangroves and soak up the panoramic views while spotting numerous specifics of birds from the 3 story watch tower,.

Even those who don’t want to trek far can still get their nature fix. Kesarval Spring Waterfall is conveniently located near the highway at Verna, you can see waterfalls not far from the road at Amboli Ghat and Harvalem Waterfall near Sanquerim is also quite easily accessible.

Historic Temples, Forts and Churches

For those who are into culture and history Goa also has plenty to interest you during the monsoon. Taking in the views from atop a crumbling Portuguese fort is even more atmospheric under the cloudy skies and visiting the colourful capital Panjim and the UNESCO listed Portuguese churches of Old Goa without the crowds is blissful.

When visiting the spice farms near Ponda you could also visit some of Goa’s oldest and most famous Hindu temples like Shri Manguesh Temple, Shri Mahalsa Temple and Shree Shantadurga Mandir which are all nearby.

The elegant blue coloured Shri Manguesh Temple is Goa’s most famous temple, while Shri Mahalasa Temple, is regarded as Goa’s most beautiful temple and the Shree Shantadurga Mandir temple, dates back to the 1730s.

For forts check out Fort Aguada near Candolim, Chapora Fort, also known as the ‘ Dil Chahta Hai ’ fort, and the impressive Reis Magos Fort just across the water from Panaji. All offer stunning views and photo opportunities.

Museums and indoor activities

For really rainy days there are also some nice indoor activities and museums in Goa that are worth visiting.

In North Goa check out the Museum of Goa near Calangute which celebrates Goa’s history and people through contemporary art, the Houses of Goa Museum in Porvorim, the Celebrity Wax Museum in Arpora, and the State Museum of Goa in Panaji.

In South Goa, the old colonial mansions in Chandor make an interesting visit and Goa Chitra , in Benaulim, is an engaging ethnographical museum that celebrates Goa’s agricultural and traditional lifestyles. You could combine visiting both with this tour .

Ancestral Goa in Loutolim features a recreated ancient Goa village that takes you back to Goan life as it would have been 100 years ago. Definitely worth a visit although the later museum is not all indoors.

Getting to Goa and Getting Around in Monsoon

While direct international charter flights don’t run during the offseason international visitors can still reach Goa by flying to Mumbai, Delhi or Bangalore and changing onto a quick domestic flight there.

Domestic flights from Mumbai and Bangalore only take 1 hour and are often cheaper during monsoon. Trains and buses are another option from within India but take alot more time. Super heavy rains and storms can disrupt travel but usually things go to plan.

While renting a scooter or Royal Enfield motorbike is a great way to get around and explore Goa during season time you don’t want to be doing this during monsoon season for obvious reasons.

The Hop on Hop off Bus runs all year round to help you reach the most popular places in Goa from Candolim to Vagator and from Dona Paula to the Mangueshi Temple, stopping at places including Panaji, Old Goa and a spice farm on the route.

If you don’t have your own transport then taking a day trip tour package that visit’s Panjim’s Latin Quarter, Old Goa and a spice farm is the best stress free way to make the most of your time and see Goa’s top attractions.

But if you want to explore off the beaten track and get out into the nature then the best way to get around Goa during monsoon is with a car. Taxis are expensive so its better to drive to Goa or rent a car while you’re here.

Tours of the farm, often led by its owner, will give you an in-depth understanding of these flavor-charged crops and a chance to see some of the other products, like betelnut, coffee beans, pineapple, and banana, grown on the premises. Tanshikar's also keeps bees and produces its own all-natural honey.

Food is a major attraction in Goa. This part of India has a distinctive cuisine that blends Portuguese and Goan flavors, setting it apart from all the other food around India. Expect fiery flavors, fresh-caught seafood, and an abundance of coconut in the dishes.

You can't leave Goa without trying its signature dish, vindaloo, a super-hot meat curry made with palm vinegar and dried red chili peppers. Hospedaria Venite in the capital of Goa, Panaji , wows tourists with its mouthwatering vindaloo. Dominick, a Benaulim Beach mainstay, is another favorite spot for vindaloo – plus it offers front-row seats for world-class sunsets.

While many tourists visit Goa for the beaches, countless others consider the trip to be a pilgrimage to important religious sites, like the Basilica de Bom Jesus.

This Old Goa attraction dates back to the late 16th century and contains the remains of the St. Francis Xavier . The "Apostle of the Indies" co-founded the Society of Jesus religious order with friend St. Ignatius Loyola and spearheaded an extensive mission in India. The basilica has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999.

The modest yet imposing structure is a mix of Doric, Corinthian, and Baroque style with intricate carvings. Interestingly, the building was stripped of its lime plaster in the mid-20th century, making it the only church in Goa without plaster. The Basilica de Bom Jesus has since become worn by monsoons.

You can tour the church on your own, or hire one of the independent guides near the entrance for a small fee. Inside, you can see huge ornamental screens, along with the body of the resident saint in a casket that was once covered in precious stones. It's a compelling place that will transport you back in time.

Every year, the Feast of St. Francis Xavier draws big crowds to this church in late November and early December. It kicks off with a nine-day novena and open-air masses before concluding with the major holiday on Dec. 3.

Aquatic adventures go beyond the beach in Goa. The state is also home to Dudhsagar Falls, a spectacular four-tiered waterfall that towers some 310 meters above the earth. It's one of India's tallest waterfalls and a perpetually popular attraction for day trips around Goa and Karnataka .

To reach the falls, you'll need to make your way to the village of Colem by taxi or train. Depending on which train route you take, you may get a glimpse of Dudhsagar Falls along the way. Then, you'll hop aboard a shared jeep through the jungle, passing Devil's Canyon along the way. Around 45 minutes later, you'll scurry over some boulders to finally reach the falls.

The best time to visit Dudhsagar Falls is right after the monsoon , when the water is gushing. Tourists who wish to take a dip can rent a life jacket from vendors at the attraction.

Goa is home to a ton of markets, but none offer the liveliness or selection of products found at Anjuna Market. For roughly 50 years, hundreds of vendors have been setting up shop on Anjuna Beach every Wednesday to tempt free-spirited travelers with hippy-inspired trinkets and souvenirs.

Ornate textiles, woven bikinis, sculptures of deities, dreamcatchers, hammocks, magnets, t-shirts with sassy slogans, beaded jewelry, toys – you name it, you can probably buy it here.

But even if you don't want to shop, you should still make a point to visit Anjuna Market for the sightseeing. The flea market is a swirling array of colorful wares, salespeople driving hard bargains, big bags of fresh spices, and street food galore. The vibe alone is one of the reasons why Anjuna Market is one of the top places to visit in Goa.

Make your way to the laid-back city of Panaji to visit another one of Goa's historic churches: The Church of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception.

The pristine white church, which dates back to the early 17th century, stands atop a zig-zagging staircase that resembles the tiers of a wedding cake. Its perfectly symmetrical Portuguese Baroque architecture is a sight to behold. At night, twinkle lights make the church look like something out of a fairy tale.

While not ornate, the church's interior boasts bright, colorful decorations. Tourists can see the elegant main altar (dedicated to Mary, mother of Jesus) and gilded pillars with elaborate carvings. Vines of blue and white blossoms often adorn parts of the vaulted ceiling around various holidays.

Dec. 8 marks the Festival of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception , a major holiday at this church. Swing by to see it decked out in tons of colorful lights.

See what houses in Goa looked like during the 17th century at Braganza House, a historical mansion that flanks the village square in Chandor. It's divided into an east and west wing, both of which are available for tourists to poke around at their leisure.

The east wing is home to members of the Pereira-Braganza family. It boasts a massive ballroom with an impressive marble floor, along with a small chapel that contains one of St. Francis Xavier's fingernails. This part of Braganza House also brims with antiques and international artifacts.

The western side preserves the original grandeur of Braganza House. Owned by the Menezes-Braganças, the museum-like space features an expansive library with 5,000 leather-bound books from the private collection of journalist Luis de Menezes Braganza, who played an important role in the Goan independence movement. Tourists can also see breathtaking Belgian glass chandeliers, antique portraits of the family, and Chinese porcelain.

Located just 12 kilometers north of Molem , Mahadev Temple gives tourists a chance to see a structure that has been standing since the 12th century. Its remote location helped it survive centuries of conquests by the Portuguese and Muslim colonialists. Legend has it that the black basalt temple , which was built to honor Lord Shiva, has a resident king cobra. Step inside to see the detailed work of artisan carvers, including the lotus flower on the ceiling.

If Braganza House got you excited, just wait until you see Palácio do Deão. The 200-plus-year-old palace in Quepem has been restored to its original glory. It features a blend of Indian and Portuguese architecture. Tourists are welcome to explore the heritage home, including its game room and library filled with rare tomes.

The property also features sweeping tropical gardens that make for a pleasant place to spend the afternoon. Consider making reservations in advance for afternoon tea on the terrace.

Goa's unique culture and heritage are on full display at Mangeshi Temple, a beautiful spiritual attraction that's been standing for roughly 450 years. The pastel blue, gold, and white temple features a seven-story tower that pays homage to one of the Hindu god Shiva's many incarnations: Manguesh. The temple structures surround a sacred pool of water , which is thought to be the most historic part of this religious site.

You can watch devotees perform pujas (worship rituals) at the temple every day. If you happen to be there on a Monday, you can watch the Manguesh idol taken out for a procession, complete with music, in the late afternoon or early evening.

Lace up your most comfortable pair of walking shoes and head to Panjim for a stroll around Fontainhas, one of Asia's only Latin quarters . Once the headquarters for the Portuguese government in Goa, the UNESCO-recognized Heritage Zone features colonial houses and cottages decked out with pastel and fluorescent façades. Each of the houses get a fresh coat of paint after the monsoon season every year, ensuring that they always look vibrant for visitors. Don't miss the district's namesake Fountain of Phoenix.

You can explore the area on your own, or book a walking tour for a more in-depth look at the history of this fascinating neighborhood. Either way, you'll definitely work up an appetite as you wander the narrow cobblestone streets and snap photos in front of the candy-colored buildings. Refuel at one of the decades-old cafés or bakeries in the neighborhood. Confeitaria 31 de Janeiro , a bakery near Mary Immaculate School, is known for having a wide selection of tasty Goan cakes and sweets.

Wildlife lovers should put Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary at the top of their Goa travel plans. The state's largest protected wildlife area, which spans 240 square kilometers and is also home to Molem National Park , is home to all kinds of amazing creatures, including the black leopard, Bengal tiger, Malabar giant squirrel, wild boar, slender loris, Indian rock python , and ruby-throated yellow bulbul (Goa's state bird).

Hiring a guide through a travel agent, and visiting the sanctuary in the early morning or late evening increases your chances at catching a glimpse of these animals. During the daytime, you can see the natural wonders of Dudhsagar Falls and Devil's Canyon . You can also check out the Tambdi Surla Temple , a temple that has survived since the 12th century, thanks to its remote location in the forest. The structure is adorned with intricate carvings of the Hindu gods Shiva, Vishnu, and Brahma.

Dating back to 1493, Reis Magos Fort was once a defense structure aimed at protecting the area's then-capital, Goa Velha. Today, the fort is a top attraction in Goa for tourists looking to take a break from the beaches and dive into the state's fascinating history.

The site has a storied past not only as a military outpost, but also as a hospital and a jail. Tourists can see cannons, a small museum exhibit on the fort's history, and jaw-dropping views of the Mandovi River .

After your visit, head to the town's other famous attraction: Reis Magos Church. The pristine white church is one of just a handful of churches in Goa that has processions and re-enactments for the Feast of the Three Kings (Epiphany). Inside the structure, you can see an impressive multi-colored wood relief of a scene that depicts the Three Wise Men handing gifts to the Baby Jesus.

Goa braces for ‘unprecedented’ numbers in 1st tourism season after Covid

Goa’s tourism sector is a big source of revenue for the state. the tourism industry in goa directly contributes 16.43% towards the state’s gross domestic product (gdp) and also provides employment to nearly 35% of the state’s population that is dependent on the sector.

As the tourism season peaks in Goa, the government, under mounting pressure, is gearing up to welcome tourists from all around the world.

Goa this year is expecting unprecedented tourist numbers in the first season that opens fully after the Covid pandemic. As per official estimates, prior to the pandemic, the state witnessed close to 90 lakh tourists, including around 9 lakh foreigners.

Although tourism is one of the primary sources of income for the state, the authorities this time are planning to impose restrictions, including substantial fines to keep the crowd in control.

The authorities are also planning on strengthening the penal provisions of the law in the popular destinations and beaches where crowds throng the area creating mess, including littering, drinking on the beach and abandoning the bottles there, and cooking along the streets, among others, officials said.

“We believe in responsible and sustainable tourism. But there are certain new practices. People come to the beaches, break beer bottles, and leave empty beer bottles. The law was not clear on this so far, so we have issued a notification specifying the banned ‘nuisance activities’ because it is important that they are stopped immediately and we have placed substantial fines,” Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte said.

Moreover, the local residents, mainly from the capital city of Panaji have complained to the authorities about tourists spoiling the roads, and footpaths in the city including traffic jams and chaos all around.

“Panjimites are angry, frustrated and under a lot of stress, due to different factors like parking, traffic jams, photo shoots by tourists in our residential areas, broken footpaths, potholed roads etc. Our city is not at all healthy. It’s getting sicker and sicker by the day, and yet the government is planning more projects on existing recreational spaces,” Patricia Pinto a former councillor of the Corporation of the City of Panaji said.

Alleging that the government’s entire focus is on gambling, fun and entertainment for revenue generation, Arminio Ribeiro, an architect and town planner, and member of the conservation committee of the Corporation of the City of Panaji raised questions on the future projects planned for the city which eventually will come at the cost of the locals.

“Panaji as a unique cultural and heritage city is ignored. Instead, the entire focus is on gambling, fun and entertainment. As citizens of the city, we are concerned with the chaos from unregulated traffic, loss of our public waterfront spaces, and the image of our city from a heritage city to a casino city,” Ribeiro said.

Locals have also challenged and are up in arms against the Goa Tourism Department’s proposal of converting the children’s park in Panjim into a ‘waste to art park’ saying that tourism promotion will come at the cost of local welfare.

Recreational spaces on the waterfront have already made way for casino lounges, Pinto said.

“...And if the proposed ‘waste to water park’ will be formed, this will mean the best garden in Panjim maintained by the forest department would have a manned ticket entry, would be closed to our children, taking away their play space, and a recreational space where we could relax, rejuvenate, and socialise would be lost to us forever. Nobody has the right to snatch them away from us,” added Pinto.

“Tourists are free to share our space, we welcome them. But developing it for them and locking us out is a definite no,” she said.

The plan was finally withdrawn and will instead be set up elsewhere after opposition, but the capital city is feeling the pressure.

The tourism industry, however, said the numbers were a ‘good sign’. “Last year after the pandemic subsided, we had what was called revenge tourism. This year we will be receiving foreign tourists as well, which will help diversify our clientele. We need a diverse set of tourists in order that all categories of stakeholders are satisfied. A lot of small hotels and guesthouses depend on domestic tourists,” the president of the Travel and Tourism Association of Goa said.

“At the same time, we want to promote Goa as a safe and favourable experience for all including those looking for family tourism. It will help if we can keep the beaches clean, and offer different adventure experiences so we can attract the right kind of tourists,” he added.

“If I speak about limitations it will sound like an excuse. We will use our resources to take stringent action,” Police Inspector Dattaguru Sawant of the Calangute Police station said.

But law enforcement agencies admit that resources are stretched.

“In the long run, we have to promote Goa as a quality tourism destination and quality tourists to come into the state which will help us in employment and help the industry in terms of economics. We are equally accountable to our people,” the tourism minister said when asked will the state be able to handle the numbers with Goa set to get a second airport over the coming months bringing more tourists and forming a greater number of destinations.

'Goa is not just a beach-destination, it has huge potential for eco-tourism'

Interview, Goa Governor P.S. Sreedharan Pillai

Earlier this month, P.S. Sreedharan Pillai, the governor of Goa and an eminent author who has so far penned 230 books held a symposium on the traditional trees of India at the Raj Bhavan in Goa. Well-known experts from across India participated in the symposium and presented their valuable study papers on India's rich natural heritage. Under his governorship, the Raj Bhavan is taking steps to promote Goa's lesser-known historical and cultural heritage, especially through the governor's widely circulated books, including, 'Heritage Trees of Goa', 'Discovery of Vaman Vriksha Kala' and 'Heavenly Islands of Goa'.

The governor’s writing career began in 1973 with articles, stories and poems. Speaking about Dr Pillai, Goa CM Dr. Pramod Sawant in an earlier occasion, said, "His first book came to be published in 1985 bearing the title 'Rent Laws of Kerala.' The pace of his writings then picked up and he attained the first milestone in his career when his Malayalam book 'Pazhassi Smriti' was released in 2010 by the then President of India, Pratibha Patil."

The governor's 100th book – ‘Dark Days of Democracy’—was released by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2018. The next 100 books have incredibly come in a short span of 5 years. In an exclusive interview with THE WEEK from Raj Bhavan in Goa, the governor speaks about his interests and more.

Excerpts from the interview:

Tell us about the symposium on traditional trees of India. What was the idea behind it?

We are bound to promote constitutional provisions mentioned in chapters of Directive Principles and Fundamental Duties. i.e Chapter IV and Article 51 A. Our mother land Bharatvarsha, from time immemorial, expounded that plants are sentient beings, though their faculties are dormant, dull and stupefied. The Rig Veda and Atharva Veda note consciousness in plants. Our ancient findings on plant consciousness are now accepted by the world as true. Jagadish Chandra Bose, the Indian scientist, discovered over a century ago that plants possessed a nervous system similar to animals. Bose became the first to use the term ‘Plant Nerve’. Before him, Augustus Waller from London claimed that he had reported ‘the phenomenon of vegetable electricity’. Bose’s first experiments went to proving plants had life. He invented the machine ‘crescograph’ - (A crescograph is a mechanical device that measures plant growth, and was invented by Bose in the early 20th century) and through it he convinced the world the screams of agony of a fresh cabbage while it was being boiled in water. He demonstrated it before the Royal Society of London in 1901. Nobel Prize winner George Bernard Shaw – (Irish playwright), who was a vegetarian, is said to have wept while witnessing the screams of agony of a fresh cabbage while it was being boiled in water by J.C. Bose. Now, the world accepted the theory put forward by Bose about one century ago. Why did Western scientists and Indians overlook the details of Shri. J.C. Bose’s detailed experiments in full vigor is a question that requires an answer even now.

You say you have a reverence for trees. You have even penned a book titled 'Heritage Trees of Goa'.

It was in Mizoram that I first learnt about my own fascination for trees. Before coming to Goa, I was the governor of Mizoram for almost 2 years. In the National Index of Happiness, Mizoram is ranked No. 1. Its forest cover is 89 per cent in terms of percentage vis-à-vis geographical area. You look at Finland. In the World Happiness Index Finland is ranked as the happiest country on the earth. Its forest cover is 74 per cent. So, you see there is a definite correlation between happiness and forest cover. You all know when trees breathe they take in the carbon dioxide that we breathe out and they release out the oxygen that we breathe in. So, you can then imagine the huge quantum of pure fresh oxygen that is available to all these fortunate people and how much it has contributed to their overall well-being. In terms of other benefits, trees absorb cosmic healing energies from the sun and moon and gently radiate them toward the earth's living beings for their health and well-being. Trees shelter thousands of creatures of all kinds. Every single part of a tree is useful, either as food, medicine, fuel, timber, or as source material for building various things. Therefore, we as human beings must understand and appreciate their indispensable and invaluable existence on the planet.

You have highlighted Goa's vast green cover and have promoted it for tourism

After I took charge as governor (of Goa) in July 2021, I visited Partagal Mutt in Canacona Taluka to pay my respects to His Holiness. Swamiji informed me about the existence of thousand-year-old a banyan tree in the sacred precincts of Partagal Mutt. It was then I decided that one day I would return to the Partagal Mutt to worship this great banyan tree. About a year later, I began the Saimik Daiz Yatra (journey to learn about natural heritage trees of Goa) by worshipping the thousand-year-old banyan tree in the divine presence of His Holiness and then went on to see and learn about 30 more heritage trees all more than 100 years to 500 years old spread out over the length and breadth of Goa. There were some amazing trees that I discovered on the premises of the temples and churches like Shidam, Satvin, Baobab (an African tree known as 'Tree of Life'), Maddi and Hudo. These trees reflect the deep spiritual and cultural bonds of local communities with nature and have been worshipped and protected by the people over the centuries. These trees also constitute an integral part of the folklore and socio-cultural association of the people with nature and the environment. The yatra resulted in the writing and publication of 'Heritage Trees of Goa' which was released by the governor of West Bengal. The main purpose of this book was to let the country and the world know about the unique eco-cultural heritage of Goa and to promote the state as an eco-tourism destination.

You have also authored a book titled 'Vaman Vriksha Kala' based on the art of Bonsai and created a Bonsai garden in the Raj Bhavan to further promote this art. Tell us more about it.

‘Vaman Vriksha Kala’ is a monograph focusing on the specialised subject of ‘Bonsai’ i.e. potted trees. In fact, the name of the book means 'the art of miniature trees.' The prime intention of the book is to firmly establish the fact that Bonsai is originally an Indian art, as against the widely held belief that it belongs to China and Japan. In the book I have provided sufficient evidence from ancient Sanskrit texts to establish this claim that the art of Bonsai has its roots in India, and why our ancestors reduced trees to potted size.

Then there is this book on Kaavi Art, a type of stencil technique with red soil and lime, most often found in coastal Maharashtra and Karnataka. How did you come to write a book on it?

I was fascinated with Kaavi Art as it is Goa's only native painting technique and it happened during my visit to Bicholim when I witnessed the restored Kaavi artworks at the Shree Hanuman temple at Advalpale. Later, we had a four-day workshop at the Raj Bhavan in Goa to promote this art. I truly believe that Aaavi Art is a masterpiece of Goa's cultural heritage. It is also important to note that Prime Minister Narendra Modi mentioned the importance of Kaavi Art in his 'Mann Ki Baat' episode in 2021. I am sure it will bring nationwide attention to this ingenious art form.

It will be four years since you assumed charge as Governor of Goa. What do you think are the aspects that still require a change in the state?

The first and foremost change is required in the mindset that Goa is a beach-only destination. There is so much more to this state that needs to be talked about. Goa has a huge potential as an eco-tourism destination, with a rich historical and cultural heritage. At the Raj Bhavan that has been my single-minded focus so far and that is how I have highlighted varied aspects of Goa through numerous books that I have authored over the last four years.

Tourist laments shocking amount of debris found at otherwise pristine nature sanctuary: 'It's not uncommon'

Some tourists in the beautiful countryside in India are littering the wilderness and endangering wildlife, and others are disappointed with it.

In a post to the r/Goa subreddit, a Redditor shared two photos of their recent visit to Goa — one of the trash tossed by tourists and the other of a beautiful river view. The post is getting the attention of fellow travelers who are appalled at what some of the tourists are doing.

"Visited this off beat place recently, and locals are doing so much to keep it clean," wrote the OP, "but in the end, there is still so much trash around because of irresponsible beings." They then clarified that the "irresponsible beings" were other tourists.

As showcased by the photo, the pile of trash left by visitors to the wilderness area included beer bottles, plastic water bottles , cardboard, and plastic bags .

Sadly, tourists have experienced this behavior at parks and natural areas across the globe.

The wilderness is an integral part of the ecosystem, and visiting it should be accompanied by care and respect. Trees not only release oxygen into the air, but they also remove carbon dioxide, helping to slow the overheating of our planet.

Visiting places like Goa can be a great starting point for building awareness about the climate. The more you interact with wildlife, the more you'll learn how the animals and plants interact, thus creating a better understanding of the natural world and a desire to protect it.

Unfortunately, people who litter like this can ruin the experience for other travelers. It's also stressful for the locals and park rangers who are left to clean up the mess to protect the ecosystem.

Littering can also be stressful, and sometimes fatal, for wildlife . Wildlife will often mistake the trash for food. They eat it but cannot digest it.

Commenters on the post were equally as shocked and appalled by the behavior of the tourists.

"It's not uncommon for them to just throw their empties on the beaches for shoeless people to step on," wrote one commenter.

"As a tourist, I picked up my trash! And I told the others I was with to do the same," said another. "Stop Freaking trashing nature!"

Religious Tourism spots like Varanasi and Ayodhya may soon outshine Goa and Agra

New Delhi [India], April 26 (ANI): Recent data shows that post COVID religious inclinations of Indians have become stronger resulting in an accelerated momentum towards religious tourism.

According to the Ministry of Tourism data, last year 8.5 crores of tourists visited Varanasi(Kashi), around 4.5 crore people visited Prayagraj and more than 1.5 crores of people have visited Ayodhya Ram temple since the consecration ceremony. Many experts feel Varanasi will outdo Goa, Agra, and Shimla.

“During the COVID period when the temples were closed down, our Prime Minister thought let’s make the temples a place where everybody would like to visit. So we came up with the idea of having the Kashi Vishwanath corridor. It has changed the entire tourism scenario of the state and in year 2023 we had more than 10 crore tourists” said Preeti Srivastava, Deputy Director, Department of Tourism, Government of Uttar Pradesh to ANI.

Government of Uttar Pradesh is promoting the new golden triangle of Prayagraj, Kashi and Ayodhaya as a golden triangle of religious tourism.

“Now everybody is benefiting. Even the small washerman, he’s also getting business because he’s washing the linen of the hotels. The vegetable seller, everybody is benefiting. The rickshaw pullers, the flower sellers and local Prasad shops. Now the new golden triangle is coming up that is Ayodhya, Prayagraj and Varanasi” said Preeti.

The transformative impact of projects like the Kashi Vishwanath corridor, has revitalized Varanasi’s tourism sector, leading to a substantial increase in tourist footfall and allied economic activities. The surge in tourism has not only boosted local businesses but also generated substantial revenue for the state.

As per the data by the Ministry of Tourism 1,439 million people participated in religious tourism in India during 2022, it is more than double from 677 million in 2021. In 2022, religious tourism destinations earned Rs1.34 lakh crore in revenue, up from Rs65,070 crore in 2021.

In 2022, Varanasi had 82 million visitors, which is almost four times the number of visitors in 2019. This number accounted for almost 26% of all arrivals in 2022, compared to less than 4 per cent in 2019. Varanasi’s tourist footfall has surpassed Agra, which is home to the Taj Mahal, and has made it the most visited city in Uttar Pradesh.

PM Narendra Modi also mentioned in his address on the 103rd episode of radio program ‘Mann Ki Baat’ that “Now more than 10 crore tourists are reaching Kashi every year. The number of devotees visiting pilgrimages like Ayodhya, Mathura, Ujjain is also increasing rapidly. Due to this lakhs of poor are getting employment”.

According to the industry experts the religious tourism sector is expected to generate a revenue of Rs 59 billion by 2028 and create 140 million temporary and permanent jobs by 2030.

Under central government’s Swadesh Darshan Scheme, an outlay of Rs 5294 crore has been allocated for the development of theme-based tourist circuits. A total of 76 projects have been sanctioned under the project which covers popular religious destinations across different states of India. These includes Buddhist circuit, Ramayana circuit and Krishna circuit.

The Ministry of tourism has also started the Pilgrimage Rejuvenation and Spiritual Augmentation Drive (PRASHAD) scheme to improve the religious tourism experience by identifying and developing pilgrimage sites across India.(ANI)

Venice introduces charge for day-trippers as it tackles tourism influx

Venice has become the first city in the world to introduce a payment system for tourists in an effort to thin the crowds that throng the canals during the peak holiday season.

Signs warning day-trippers about the new five-euro ($8.21) charge were set up outside the train station and near an entry footbridge, telling visitors they had to pay before diving into Venice's narrow alleyways.

April 25 is a national holiday in Italy and is the first of 29 days this year when people must buy a ticket if they want to access the lagoon city from 8.30am to 4.30pm.

Reservations are meant to be made online but there is also a booth on hand for those who don't have smartphones.

While there are no turnstiles at the city gateways to make sure people have a pass, inspectors will be making random checks and issue fines of between 50 and 300 euros to anyone who has failed to register.

"No one has ever done this before," Venice Mayor Luigi Brugnaro told reporters earlier this month.

"We are not closing the city … we are just trying to make it liveable."

Tourist numbers vastly outweigh population

Some 20 million people visited Venice last year, a city official said, with roughly half of them staying overnight in hotels or holiday lets — an influx that dwarfs the resident population currently put at around 49,000.

People with hotel reservations and visitors aged under 14 do not need to pay the entry fee, but still need to register beforehand. Residents, students and workers are exempt.

Venice narrowly escaped being placed on UNESCO's "World Heritage in Danger" list last year partly because the UN body decided that the city was addressing concerns that its delicate ecosystem risked being overwhelmed by mass tourism.

Besides introducing the entry charge, the city has also banned large cruise ships from sailing into the Venetian lagoon and has announced new limits on the size of tourist groups.

"The phenomenon of mass tourism poses a challenge for all Europe's tourist cities," said Simone Venturini, who is responsible for tourism and social cohesion on the city council.

"But being smaller and more fragile, it is even more impacted by this phenomenon and is therefore taking action earlier than others to try to find solutions."

Ticketing this year is in an experimental phase and Mr Venturini said that in future Venice might start charging more at certain times of the year to look to discourage arrivals.
