Ships Sailing in South America

Dine like a local on your south america cruise, malbec wine.

This easy-to-love red helped put Argentina on the world winemaking map. It’s fruit-forward flavor pairs perfectly with grilled meats, like asado.

In this light, refreshing seafood dish from Peru, raw fish is “cooked” using a citrus marinade and tossed with fresh, diced vegetables.

Many countries have their own take on empanadas, but Chile’s typically combine chopped olives, raisins, eggs, and beef stuffed into a pastry shell.

Even a taste of Rio leaves you wanting more, so an entire day is devoted to independent exploration.

Panoramic View of Lima from Miraflores, Lima, Peru

Cruise to Lima (Callao), Peru

Lima (callao) shore excursions, amazing experiences coming soon., sorry, there are no excursions for this port at this moment., things to do in lima.

Lima's main square, Plaza de Armas, is a beautful site to see.

Get to Know Centro

Lima's main square, Plaza de Armas, is a beautful site to see.

Plaza de Armas is a must-visit, and you'll realize why as you stand amid towering palm trees and admire the Cathedral of Lima, the wooden balconies of the Archbishop's Palace and the baroque-style Government Palace. Peru's president resides there, and a ceremonial changing of the guard occurs daily at noon.

Pre-Incan monkey ceramics called huacos hail from the Peruvian culture of Chancay.

Go Ancient or Modern

Pre-Incan monkey ceramics called huacos hail from the Peruvian culture of Chancay.

To appreciate indigenous history, visit the Larco Museum, set amid lush gardens in the Pueblo Libre district and featuring pre-Colombian artwork — some of it famously erotic — spanning more than 5,000 years. Or you can enjoy modern creativity at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MAC) in trendy Barranco or ogle 14-karat-gold decadence at the Museo Oro del Peru.

Lima's Barranco district is a colorful area with many things to do.

Wander and Make a Wish

The eclectic Barranco district is where you'll feel Lima's bohemian vibe. In addition to tucked-away bars and coffee shops and the MAC, you'll find street art, mansions and the 100-foot wooden El Puente de los Suspiros (Bridge of Sighs). Legend says that if you make a wish and hold your breath as you cross, your wish will come true.

Peruvian markets are a great place to get handwoven souvenirs

LOCAL CUISINE

Peruvian cuisine is celebrated because of Lima's innovative gastronomy, blending local ingredients — seafood, peppers, corn, quinoa and potatoes — with global flavors, especially Japanese and Chinese. Dishes to try include ceviche (raw fish in a citrusy marinade), causa (mashed potatoes with chili pepper and shredded chicken) and Nikkei, Japanese-Peruvian cuisine, such as sashimi-style fish in a spicy sauce.

Peruvian markets are a great place to get handwoven souvenirs

Traditional Peruvian handicrafts are colorful and practical — straw baskets, clay pottery and handwoven sweaters — and in Lima there are several spots to shop. In the Miraflores district, the Indian Market features four city blocks of stalls. The Larcomar mall near Parque Salazar has several handicraft shops. Neighboring Barranco is home to an array of artisanal stores and galleries.

A continent of contrast, South America is vast, varied and so much more than a sum of its parts. Famous for its laid back attitude as well as its Latin flair, this splendid region houses untold stories at every turn. Holland America crewmember missing after going overboard before vessel docks at Port Everglades

By Hunter Geisel

Updated on: April 13, 2024 / 4:52 PM EDT / CBS Miami

FORT LAUDERDALE  — A search is underway for a cruise ship crewmember who went overboard while the vessel was still at sea before docking in South Florida this weekend.

Around 11:18 a.m. Saturday, deputies with the Broward County Sheriff's Office Port Everglades District responded to a report of a missing crewmember on a Holland America cruise ship.

According to Holland America, the crew member was reported missing when the Rotterdam vessel docked in Fort Lauderdale on Saturday. After reviewing the security camera video, the crew member went "purposefully overboard" around 9:45 p.m. Friday while the vessel was still en route between Cuba and Key West, the cruise line told CBS News Miami.

BSO's Homicide and Crime Scene units have responded to Port Everglades to investigate, while the U.S. Coast has been notified and is currently searching the sea for the crew member.

"All of us at Holland America Line are deeply saddened by this incident and our thoughts and prayers are with the team member's family at this difficult time," the cruise line shared in a statement with CBS News Miami.

This is a developing story. Tune into CBS News Miami on-air and online for the latest updates.
