Denver pizza shop closing after 24 years

After 24 years, Benny Blanco's Pizza shop in Capitol Hill is closing its door in Denver and moving to a different city. 

Earlier this month, the well-known shop announced their closure on social media . 

"It is with deep sadness and a heavy heart that we must announce the closure of Benny Blanco's Capitol Hill location," said owners Mike and Holly Martinez. "This decision was not made lightly, and the thought of saying goodbye to the place we've called home for so long is truly devastating. Our little corner of Cap Hill has been more than just a pizzeria; it's been a gathering spot, a late-night refuge, and a place where countless memories were made. The relationships we've built with our loyal customers and the bonds formed with our amazing team members over the years are something we will always cherish." 

The owners have made great memories with all of their customers and employees, the couple even met at the shop -- but it hasn't always been smooth sailing. 

Throughout the years, the couple has seen the neighborhood change. When the pizza shop first opened, they said drugs were a problem. Fast forward a few years later, when the pandemic hit, the population of those experiencing homelessness grew. 

Martinez said the two didn't feel comfortable in the area anymore and with rent prices going up, staying at the current location wasn't in the cards.

This is one of the many restaurants leaving Denver. According to the Colorado Restaurant Association, from July 2023 to July 2024, the city lost a total of 183 restaurants. 

In a statement shared with 9NEWS, the Colorado Restaurant Association said rent is a growing problem for restaurants moving out of Denver, but not the only one. 

"Our restaurant members often cite Denver’s minimum-wage increases as particularly burdensome, more so than rent, because every mandated increase gives servers and bartenders, the highest earners in any full-service restaurant, a raise while leaving behind the workers in the kitchen.”

Benny Blanco's Pizza is not going far, the owners have opened a new location in Arvada located at 10050 Ralston Road, Unit B, 80004. 

A Day in the Life with Leylah Fernandez

Ahead of the U.S. Open, the 21-year-old Canadian athlete brought T&C along for a typical day in her life as a professional tennis player—which includes meditating, working out, and Legos.

At the 2021 U.S. Open, Leylah Fernandez captured the hearts of New York City crowds. The then-17-year-old had a fairytale run to the finals, where she eventually lost to fellow teenage phenom Emma Raducanu. In the three years since, Fernandez has adjusted to the fast-paced life on tour. "There normally isn’t any secret sauce to playing well," she tells T&C . "It’s about doing the basics to a high level, being consistent with the right habits, and trusting that if I get that right the results will come."

Ahead of the Open, tennis players are on a North American hard court swing, playing in D.C., Toronto, and Cincinnati. Fernandez's lead-up was shortened, as she, like many of her peers, opted to play in the Olympics for Team Canada instead. Yet, she still had strong runs in Toronto (where she made it to the semifinals in doubles) and Cincinnati (making it to the quarterfinals in singles and finals in doubles), preparing her for what will hopefully another great performance at the upcoming Grand Slam.

Here, Fernandez, currently no. 24 in the world, shares a day in the life from Toronto, giving T&C an inside look at what it's like to prepare for the U.S. Open .

"I always like to start my day with some yoga and light meditation. I incorporated it into my daily routine earlier this year and I love it!"

She adds, "It’s done a lot of good for not only my body in terms of flexibility and range of motion but also my mind. I enjoy being able to set aside 20-30 minutes a day where I can feel really peaceful."

"This year in Toronto, we’re staying downtown in a hotel. I normally prefer hotels, as I feel that I can have my own space and stay in my own personal bubble," Fernandez says. "We’re traveling all over the world, but a lot of times we don’t actually have time or make time to explore the cities we are in, so it’s always nice to have a view from the hotel room. I was lucky enough that mine overlooks the incredible Toronto skyline."

"Coming right from the Olympics in Paris we kind of headed straight to Toronto and this is our first week [on the North American hard-court swing]," Fernandez says. "It’s been really fun playing doubles with my sister so far and hopefully we can play a few more events together before I head to Asia."

"Family has always been a big value for me. It’s tough when you are so focused on competing, but I do my best to make time for my family when I play at home," she says. "We have some family living here in Toronto that we don’t get to see very often, so we took the opportunity to meet up with my aunt, uncle and four cousins for breakfast before the tournament starts."

Fernandez adds, "We went to Cora, which I believe is a Quebec chain. My sister and I used to go back in Montreal growing up, so it also brings back memories. I usually go for a nutritious breakfast to start the day. I switch it up, but my go-to is eggs with avocado. And orange juice, of course!"

"This is probably the most important part of the day: warming up. As much as I want to get straight to the court and hit balls, I’ve learned the importance of properly warming up beforehand. I warm up for almost a full hour, no matter what," Fernandez says. "I do a mix of dynamic stretches, mobility and band exercises, and start sweating a bit. Here, I’m with my fitness coach Abdul. He’s working me hard, but I know it’s the key to staying healthy and ready."

"Today, we were warming up in the Tennis Canada gym. There were photos of us winning the Billie Jean King Cup on the walls. It’s fun to see it up there."

"I practiced on site at the National Bank Open with Pliskova. I’m playing doubles tomorrow and singles Wednesday night, so now is the time to make final adjustments, get used to the conditions and get myself in some live match play situations."

She continues, "Being at home here in Canada, it’s fun to see how many fans come out and cheer for practice. I can feel the support even before the match starts. I sometimes travel with a hitting partner, but today I played with another player. My father is my coach, so he’s on court with me guiding me at practice."

"Yes, Lego haha!" Fernandez says. "I guess I’m still a kid at heart. My sister Bianca and I had a bit of down time, so we got started on building a Lego set... It’s like a little puzzle and it helps me shift my focus and relax. Another guilty pleasure of mine is crocheting. If you see me around at tournaments, I’m probably crocheting or building something!"

"I am thoroughly surprised with how they came out," Fernandez says of her Lego roses .

"Just as it is important to make sure my body is ready to go before I train, it’s equally as vital that I look after myself once I’m off court. My time stretching and recovering is also a good time to reflect on the day’s work and where I did well and can improve in the future," she explains.

"I started playing soccer even before I got into tennis. Soccer is my second love. I am a huge fan of Man City . My father played soccer professionally and he’s always drawn parallels with soccer when coaching us on the tennis court. There’s actually so much you can take out of soccer and apply to tennis," Fernandez says. "When we travel, we try to tie in watching professional soccer games when we can. We went to a Man City game in England earlier this summer which was awesome. Here in Toronto, we got invited by the Toronto FC. It was my first time watching MLS live. I know it’s really coming up and I’m excited to see more of it in the future."

"I got to walk the players onto the court with the team’s mascot which is a live hawk! I’m also a big animal lover, so I was pumped. Funny story though, the hawk almost flew away when we got onto the stadium!"

"My sister came with me. It was nice to share that moment with her. She is basically my best friend."

Jacqueline Fernandez seeks travel permission, attends court for money laundering case linked to conman Sukesh

Actor jacqueline fernandez reached delhi court in connection with a money laundering case linked to ‘conman’ sukesh chandrashekhar. she applied for travel permission which has been listed for december 22..

Actor Jacqueline Fernandez on Tuesday arrived at Delhi's Patiala House Court in connection with the ₹ 200 crores money laundering, involving 'conman' Sukesh Chandrashekhar. The actor has applied for permission to travel amid the ongoing investigation. She will be travelling to Bahrain on December 23, as per her application. According to news agency ANI, the court has directed the application to Enforcement Directorate (ED) who is yet to reply in the matter. “Actor Jacqueline Fernandes moves an application seeking permission to travel to Bahrain from December 23. The court directed ED to file a reply and listed the matter for December 22,” tweeted the agency.

A video of Jacqueline arriving at the court premises also surfaced online. The case is connected to alleged conman Sukesh Chandrashekhar, in which Jacqueline is also an accused.

Previously, on December 12, actor Nora Fatehi filed defamation law suit against Jacqueline Fernandez in connection with ₹ 200 crore extortion case in which Sukesh Chandrashekhar is the main accused. Her suit is against Jacqueline and a few media organisations for allegedly ‘trying to tarnish her reputation’ and caused her loss of work in the industry.

Nora said in her defamation suit, “It has started to become evident that the aforementioned rivals being unable to compete with the Complainant fairly in the industry have started to try and tarnish her reputation which would cause her loss of work.”

However, Jacqueline’s lawyer, advocate Prashant Patil said that his client has never said anything in public about Nora Fatehi and hence, the question of defaming her should not arise. He told ETimes, "Jacqueline has not made any statement in front of any electronic or print media against Nora or for that matter, any other person. She has consciously avoided talking about the Enforcement Directorate proceedings. Till date she has maintained the sanctity of law and because the matter is sub-judice she has always avoided to speak in front of print and social media. Having said that, we have not received any official copy of the suit filed by Nora. Once we receive an official confirmation or an order of the Honourable Court, we will respond to it legally.”

Earlier, Jacqueline was granted bail on a personal bond of ₹ 2 lakh by the court in the ₹ 200-crore money laundering case involving conman Sukesh Chandrashekar. The actor will be next seen in Rohit Shetty's upcoming Cirkus, starring Ranveer Singh.
