LA River Expeditions

Start your urban adventure

La river expeditions.

Since 2008 we’ve been on the cutting edge of opening up public access to the Los Angeles River, and changing perceptions about the river’s possibilities, via our one-of-a-kind kayaking expeditions.

In 2024, we continue to not only run our educational tours but also to clean up the LA River and advocate for the Clean Water Act, provide an increasing number of tours for youth and underserved or marginalized populations, and work with likeminded partners to revitalize our hometown river—and other rivers, too, such as the Owens River.

We’ve led the way towards making these popular kayak tours a natural part of life in Los Angeles and improving the quality of life for all Angelenos.

The 2024 Season

Our 2024 kayaking season runs from Memorial Day (May 27) through Labor Day weekend (September 2).

Places we visit

Those who came before.

We would like to pay respect to and honor the traditions and ancestry of the Michumash people who called these islands and the surrounding waters home for many thousands of years before modern time.

The Tomol, pictured below, was the traditional watercraft used to navigate the waters and cross the Santa Barbara Channel to trade with mainland Chumash. Our paddling journeys follow these trade routes and we acknowledge our modern place in these cherished waters.

Anacapa Tour

If you are interested in whale watching and an up close visit to the Channel Islands, we highly recommend booking with Channel Islands Expeditions. Captain Tim and First Mate Travis were top notch - Experienced, Knowledgeable, Outgoing, Patient and Accommodating. We could absolutely not have had a better day! We signed up for the Sea Cave Combo package and it was the best trip ever. Originally we were put on a waitlist for a different (and more expensive) company that had us inconveniently book the ferry + activity separately, but then came across CIE last minute and booked through them. It was a much better choice. From start to finish the whole crew, especially... Read More

Awesome experience. Did a day trip to Santa Cruz Island and went on a guided kayaking tour. Captain Dan and his crew were all extremely friendly and knowledgeable. Also, the crew member Bailey made some delicious chocolate chip cookies with three different kinds of chocolate for everyone on board, would book this trip again just for the cookies alone.

We had the best day out with CIX on our trip to Painted Cave. The trip was a kayak and snorkel day trip. The crew was amazing, everyone was very friendly and knowledgeable. The kayaking was so beautiful and it was cool to get into the caves and learn about them through the guides. The snorkeling was super pretty, and we enjoyed the day out... Read More

This was a wonderful and beautiful experience. We came here on my birthday, it was my 53rd birthday. Amazing! So happy I went with this company. You can bring coolers on board & dry bags with snacks are allowed on the kayaks, & take a ball cap for helmet. Dan was our guide Super friendly, very patient, all staff was great. Went on a Thursday, the experience was more intimate, because all the caves were empty, & our group was only 5 visitors.

My recent kayaking trip with Channel Islands Expeditions was an absolute gem. We departed from the Channel Islands Harbor in Oxnard. There was a CIEx sign set out so I knew I was in the right place to meet. Right from the start, the crew's professionalism and attention to safety made me feel secure and excited. Previously called: 6-day Johnstone Strait Expedition

Want to see the best of everything.

Spend the 6-day Whales & Wilderness Expedition paddling one of the most amazing kayak routes in North America. This tour explores the best of the wildlife and culturally rich Broughton Archipelago & Johnstone Strait areas which are world-renowned destinations for scenic paddling and wildlife. We set up our tents in a new campsite each night and spend one night at the remote floating Paddlers’ Inn. The diversity of both paddling, environment, and wildlife, from tiny intertidal life up to humpback and orca whales, makes this a trip not to be missed.

Please note: As an expedition-style tour, the campsites are rustic and we carry all of our gear with us. At each campsite we set up and sleep in backpacking-style tents. This tour does not stay at the Whales & Wilderness Glamping basecamp.

What makes this trip different from the rest?

  • A one-way kayaking tour where we explore new territory every day
  • Experience the best of both the Johnstone Strait area and the Broughton Archipelago
  • One night stay in a remote floating lodge
  • Water taxi transport
  • Option of both double and single kayaks
  • Your opportunity to experience one of the most diverse wildlife and kayaking environments in British Columbia

Get off the Beaten Path

After years of exploring the Broughton Archipelago and Johnstone Strait, we are confident we have put together a great trip allowing you to explore well beyond the reach of the typical sea kayaking circuit. You will thoroughly enjoy this one-way journey through the uncrowded northern Broughton Archipelago, exploring areas off the beaten path and spending a night at the remote Paddlers Inn for an extra special treat. We spend 4 days exploring the Broughton Archipelago and then spend our last two days enjoying world-renowned Blackfish Sound and Johnstone Strait – the realm of whales.

Wildlife we may see on this trip includes:

  • Humpback whales
  • Killer whales
  • Dall’s and harbour porpoises
  • Pacific white-sided dolphins
  • Minke whales
  • Bald eagles
  • River otters and occasionally sea otters
  • Black bears
  • Rich intertidal life

Getting Started

We will begin our journey from northern Vancouver Island where you will meet your guides and fellow kayakers. These tours alternate traveling North to South and South to North through the islands but all tours cover the same incredible area.

Paddle through the Broughton Archipelago…

“What makes the perfect kayaking destination?” we say……. “Lots of small islands, passageways, protected water, wildlife, and a sense of remoteness.” The Broughton Archipelago has all this and more. There is no question that this is one of the world’s top kayaking destinations.

…into Johnstone Strait and the “Realm of Whales”

Some of the star attractions on this expedition are the Killer and Humpback Whales. Getting a chance to paddle in their habitat is a thrill of a lifetime. Johnstone Strait is quite simply the best place on earth to kayak with orca and humpback whales in the wild. Most of British Columbia’s 300 Northern Resident and killer whales return to these waters to feed, sleep, play, and rub their bodies on the pebble beaches of world-famous Robson Bight. The humpback population in this area is thriving and growing every year with over 97 individual humpbacks known to frequent this particular region.

Listen to the Whales

Enter the acoustic world of the orcas, as we travel with our underwater hydrophone. When we are in range of the orcas, we will be able to listen to their eerily beautiful calls and echolocating clicks from a deck-mounted speaker.

The Camping

This is a true expedition style trip, which means we will move from camp to camp. If we find the perfect location we may choose to spend two nights camped at the same beautiful site, however most nights we will be at a new campsite. Relaxing on the beach in the evening is a great way to finish a day of sea kayaking. This is where new friends are made and talk of the day’s adventure unfolds.

What’s Cooking?

We love food and we want to show you how good cooking in the outdoors can be! Your multi-talented guides will cook fresh, hearty food made with locally-sourced ingredients wherever possible. You can expect hearty and healthy meals with plenty of tasty fruits and veggies available, as well as appetizers and locally baked goods. Learn more about the meals we serve on our Food page .

We spend one night of our Whales & Wilderness Expedition at the Paddler’s Inn, in one of the more remote corners of the British Columbia coast. The warm hospitality of the McMorran family will ensure that our stay is both comfortable and relaxing. The perfect way to start or finish this wonderful journey. On-site massage (for an additional fee), showers, and trails for exploring round out the experience at the Paddlers Inn.

Cedar structure over water

TOUR MEETING LOCATION

Where & when:  alder bay resort & marina   at  11:30 am  (day 1).

On day 1 of your trip you will meet your water taxi driver in Alder Bay on Vancouver Island (approximately a 5.5-hour drive by car north of Victoria or 4 hours north of Nanaimo).

At your meeting time, you can meet your guides at the cedar structure on the pier.

RETURN TIME

Where & when:  alder bay by approx.  12 – 1 pm (day 6).

Welcome to your adventure! At 11:30 am, we will transfer ourselves and equipment aboard our water taxi and journey out to the unique Paddler’s Inn Eco-lodge. Once we have arrived at the floating lodge we will meet our hosts Bruce and Josée, will get comfortable, explore the surroundings, and if time and weather permit, we will get out for our first introductory paddle after a kayak briefing from your guides before we enjoy our first dinner together.

DAYS 3 TO 5

There are many options to paddle amongst the enchanting islands of the Broughton Archipelago. This region is a network of forested islands and protected passageways that offers both scenic paddling as well as intriguing history. Several beaches and campsites show evidence of those who have come before us- the First Nations people. We often visit the home of local legend, Billy Proctor, and his collection of historical west coast treasures. Spending time listening to Billy’s stories is a great way to get a sense of what life on the west coast was like and how it is changing. Each day we will keep our eyes and ears open for the marine mammals that frequent the area, including orcas, humpbacks, minke whales, dolphins, and porpoises

For our lunch breaks, we will enjoy picnics on various beaches. These breaks will also give us the opportunity to stretch our legs, discover the creatures that live in the intertidal zone, and explore the lush coastal rainforests with old-growth cedar trees.

We will stay at some of the most stunning wilderness campsites in the region. Enjoy locally-inspired dinners on the beaches, sitting around bonfires sharing the highlights of your day with your crew, before crawling into your tent for a cozy night under the stars.

This is our last day to enjoy the marine environment of the Johnstone Strait and the Broughton Archipelago. On the previous day we will paddle to Spirit of the West Adventures’ private campsite on Hanson Island to spend our last night under the stars. We will paddle back to our landing cove and we will take a short van shuttle back to Alder Bay for 12 – 2 pm.

*The South to North route will start with a short van shuttle from Alder Bay to our launch location on the first day. The last day will end with a water taxi ride from Paddlers Inn to Alder Bay.

Below is a list of commonly asked questions. If you have any further questions or concerns please do not hesitate to call us.

+ WHAT MAKES OUR WHALES & WILDERNESS EXPEDITION SPECIAL?

Our 6-day Whales & Wilderness Expedition is one of the most popular tours we offer. We like to think it has something for every paddler: from a diverse paddling route boasting dotted island chains and sheltered bays ripe for exploring throughout the Broughton Archipelago to more of the open waters of the Johnstone Strait and Blackfish Sound.  Both of these areas are well-known for a variety of rich and diverse wildlife ranging from seabirds, eagles, and bears to dolphins, porpoises, orcas and humpbacks. A one-way water taxi into the islands provides the opportunity to explore more of the area with no backtracking needed. This expedition starts or ends with a one-night stay at a floating eco-lodge nestled deep in the heart of the archipelago for an especially unforgettable coastal experience.

+ WHAT SORT OF CAMPSITES ARE THROUGHOUT THE BROUGHTON ARCHIPELAGO AND JOHNSTONE STRAIT AREAS?

The Broughton Archipelago Marine Park is the largest marine park in British Columbia. The campsites in this area are spread throughout a collection of undeveloped islands and islets near the mouth of Knight Inlet off of northern Vancouver Island. In the larger waterways of Johnstone Strait and Blackfish Sound further south, the stunning landscapes continue to impress with views as far as the eye can see. These more open areas are where the larger marine mammals such as humpback and orca are more frequently seen.

When travelling through these areas, we seek out sites in secluded bays, rocky bluffs, or forest clearings. While we always aim to find sites that provide a feeling of solitude, there may be times (on occasion) when we encounter other paddlers throughout the expedition. Campsites will be chosen by our guides based on considerations such as weather and sea state forecasts, group size, and route options.

On this particular tour, our first or last night (depending on which direction your tour travels) will be spent at the Paddler’s Inn, a rustic floating kayak lodge deep in the Broughton Archipelago.

+ WHAT IS THE PADDLERS INN LIKE? DOES IT HAVE ANY AMENITIES?

The Paddlers Inn is a rustic eco-lodge nestled in Simoom Sound on the shorelines of Gilford Island between Vancouver Island and mainland BC. It was started by a local duo named Bruce and Josee McMorran and has been stewarded by them since 1990. Set against a spectacular backdrop of towering bluffs and tranquil water, it is the perfect place to begin or end your adventure with us. Comprised of a handful of floating buildings repurposed from old logging camps in the area, it provides a welcoming atmosphere with access to a central kitchen area within the main lodge, comfortable rooms, hot showers, a sauna, and a covered outdoor lounge area.

+ WHAT SORT OF EXPERIENCE IS NEEDED FOR THIS EXPEDITION? HOW FAR DO WE PADDLE EACH DAY?

Our Whales & Wilderness Expedition can be suitable for paddlers of all skill levels and outdoor experience. This 6-day tour is one of the longer trips we offer and we recommend at the very least being comfortable in a wilderness environment and having a strong sense of adventure! Your guides will always ensure you are provided with clear direction, paddling techniques, and all sorts of tips to help you get the most out of your trip with us.

Distance covered and time spent paddling will vary depending on each particular trip, group size, weather forecasts, sea conditions, and our intended destination each day. We always establish a pace that is pleasant and feasible for all with ample breaks to stretch our legs and explore the area. Generally, we cover a distance of  4-6 hours (6-8 nautical miles) a day on our expedition-style tours, not including meals and stretch breaks. The first and last days of a tour involves less time on the water due to water taxi travel and tour introduction/orientation.

+ WILL WE BE ABLE TO SHOWER ANYWHERE? WHAT IS THE BATHROOM PROCESS LIKE OUTDOORS?

During your one-night stay at the Paddlers’ Inn, you will have access to hot showers and flushing toilets.

Throughout the rest of the expedition, there is limited freshwater accessible in the areas we travel through. Many guests find wet wipes to be a great alternative for personal hygiene. If you would like to freshen up, salt water is also perfectly fine to use. To keep our impacts to a minimum, we ask that you please only bring environmentally friendly and biodegradable soaps and shampoo.

Bathroom facilities are not common in most wilderness areas, although some sites do have pit toilets. We also carry a portable toilet system that we typically rely on in most cases.

We understand that not everyone is aware of wilderness toilet etiquette and are here to help. Your guides will always designate a spot that is ideal for ensuring everyone’s privacy. We are very familiar with making sure guests feel comfortable and informed – please feel free to ask us any questions you might have, before or during your tour.

+ WHERE DOES THIS TOUR BEGIN?

Tour meeting location: Alder Bay Resort & Marina at 11:30 am (Day 1)

On day 1 of your trip you will meet your guide team in Alder Bay on Vancouver Island (approximately a 5.5-hour drive by car north of Victoria or 4 hours north of Nanaimo). Depending on which direction your tour date travels, you will either hop on a water taxi up to Paddlers’ Inn or paddle out of Bauza Cove (our guides will provide a shuttle to the launch point from Alder Bay). Please arrive in Alder Bay 15 minutes early to allow time to unload, carry your luggage down to the dock, and arrange parking (if necessary) to leave your vehicle for the duration of your tour.

The Experience

Loved all the wildlife and campsites (especially White Cliffs). I’ll never forget seeing a sea lion pop-up out of the water eating a giant fish. Can’t believe we saw a minke whale!! Our guides Nadia and Gigi were the best and so knowledgeable and fun to be around.

Deb and Hugh

This was a bucket list type trip. Far exceeded any expectations that I had coming in. From first crossing the Johnstone Strait and a rainbow appearing to seeing multiple humpback whales - truly incredible stuff.

The experience was amazing. The guides provided gentle and encouraging instruction and guidance. They were able to gauge the abilities of the group and provide an experience that pushed us beyond what we thought we could do.

Mentally, I will be unpacking this trip for months to come. Seeing and hearing numerous humpback whale surface. Playing in the bioluminescences at paddlers Inn dock. Exploring the intertidal zone, complete with squirting clams! Black bear, mink, seals and coastal birds! But it was your guides, PJ and Kevin, that made this trip an exceptional experience.

This trip exceeded all my expectations and boosted my confidence in my capabilities immensely. It has opened up a whole new world for me. Changed my life.

The trip was perfect, beyond all expectations more enjoyable than anything else I have ever done before...

Thank you for such an incredible adventure. The guides were perfect, the food, the whales and more whales. First class from start to finish. See you again next summer...

Guides were excellent - best of any tour I have done - knowledgeable, competent, confident, and excellent communication. I really appreciated the sharing of their Indigenous and marine environment knowledge.

The guides were all very knowledgable and good at making us feel comfortable in our kayaks. Scott had a great sense of humour.

Very knowledgable naturalists, great concern for safety, Bre was fun to be with and the guys were good sports on this all female trip.

Outstanding, great cooks, fun to be with, very personable.

Toni and Gen are excellent guides with the sweetest dispositions imaginable. I thoroughly enjoyed the other members of the group and of course the incredible scenery and wildlife. Trip of a lifetime!

Extremely professional + knowledgeable staff with terrific sense of humour who lead fascinating + educational tours.

Food was excellent, very wholesome. I don't eat that well at home. The banana bread is the best ever!!

Excellent, amazing what they fed us in the wild... Loved the grape leaves.

Thank you for a very memorable experience. Also especially appreciated the great care taken for my special diet."

Trip information

Why choose us.

Fin Expeditions takes pride in following established best practices of Ethical Ecotourism.

SMALL GROUP SIZE

We want our kayak tours to have a more intimate experience for every guest.  Large groups disrupt wildlife habitats and require loud guide communication and a less personalized approach.  Other kayak tour agencies put 40 or more people in a group. We typically limit the size of our tours to 12 guests .

TRAINED GUIDES

At Fin Expeditions our guides are highly trained. Other kayak tour agencies may give their guides as little as 2 hours of training. Our guides receive 50+ hours of training before they are certified to lead a tour.

LOCALLY OWNED

Fin Expeditions is locally owned and our tours are run by local guides that are knowledgeable, friendly and know the area inside and out. We support our local community and efforts to conserve and restore the Indian River Lagoon.

ATTENTION TO DETAIL

We are top-rated on Tripadvisor and Google for a reason. We know what it’s like to travel and do what we can to take some of that load off our guests. Just show up and we’ll take care of the details .

BETTER EQUIPMENT

We believe by fully equipping our guests, we provide an upscale experience. We use high-end kayaks with high-back seats for your comfort. We clean and sanitize all equipment and life jackets after each use.

Isle of Palms Safari Kayak Tour | 2-hr Book Now

expedition kayak tour

The Isle of Palms Safari Kayak adventure is simply a 2-hour version of our 3-hour excursion from the Isle of Palms.  Same guides, same gear, just tailored to the needs of all ages.

Departing from our Isle of Palms Outpost at the marina, you’ll find yourself situated at the beginning of the longest contiguous stretch of undeveloped coastline on the Eastern seaboard.  What does that mean for you?  Wildlife is abundant here.  Bottlenose dolphins, blue crabs, sea turtles, oysters, pelicans, egrets and myriad of other species feed and live in this part of the estuary.

If conditions are ideal, we’ll pull the kayaks up on a verdant hammock island to stretch our legs and swim along the bank (its oyster-free).  Your guide will show your family the native plants and animals that live on the small island, including edible plants and tiny wharf crabs on a brief nature walk, too!

Your guide will engage your children with stories about pluff mud and pirates while teaching them about the intricacies of the salt marsh.  It’s a great way to explore the waters that surround this island oasis.

Don’t see a date on the calendar that works for you? Check out our Shem Creek Safari Kayak Tour offerings, about 15 minutes from IOP!

Trip Advisor Reviews

We have two little ones who have been long hoping to kayak, but we are far from experts ourselves. Enter Olivia from Coastal Expeditions. She very patiently - and with great enthusiasm - talked 8 and 5 years olds through what I assume is an abbreviated version of the typical tour (not in time, but distance covered) - but which felt like a grand adventure to all involved. All the while paddling from kayak to kayak engaging all in interesting and friendly conversation and pointing out interesting birds and wildlife, and natural features (along with great kayaking tips). By the end, we all felt like we had substantially improved skills - and a real desire to return. Already none of us can wait until next time. While I'm sure all their guides are great, if you have young kids with you, ask for Olivia - she was terrific. Things to bring - sunscreen, hats, water bottles, and if (like us) you are not experienced in kayaking - a sense of humor. MGD Chicago

Desolation Sound & Toba Inlet Sea Kayak Expeditions

Expedition-style 6 & 7 day kayak tours exploring the remote and awe-inspiring passages beyond Desolation Sound towards majestic Toba Inlet

“ The scenery is rugged and beautiful...silence but for the sound of paddles dipping into the water. I felt totally blessed to have had this experience with this group of people in this beautiful place. ”

All-Inclusive Multi-Day Sea Kayak Expeditions paddle beyond Desolation Sound into the Coast Mountains & Stunning Fjord of Toba Inlet

About our sea kayak expeditions.

expedition group lined up along shore

About our Sea Kayak Expeditions

We have been running guided sea kayak trips into Desolation Sound, the Discovery Islands and Toba Inlet since 1995. While all our guests enjoy the peace and relaxation of Desolation Sound, with its idyllic island camps and stunning backdrops, there are always those that look wistfully down the passages and inlets that lead into these distant mountains and wonder what lies beyond.

Our sea kayak expeditions are a journey through Desolation Sound and into these magnificent passages and fjords that make up some of the most beautiful kayaking destinations in the world.

“In the grandeur of their scenery these inlets surpass all the others within this area and must rival in their magnificence all examples of the fiord type in the world.”

— J. Austen Bancroft, writing for the Geological Society to Canada in 1911, describing Toba and Bute Inlets.

We offer two enticing options for experiencing the full immensity of this incredible coastal British Columbia landscape – all with the comfort and security of a well-planned, fully-inclusive guided kayak tour:

Option 1: 6-day “Desolation & Redonda Island” Loop Expedition Launching from our private site on Okeover Inlet, this adventurous 6 day tour aims to circumnavigate West Redonda Island north of Desolation, before returning through Desolation Sound to our Okeover base.

Option 2: 7-day “Epic Toba Inlet & Waterfalls” One-Way Expedition

A one-way journey deep into the Coast Mountains, including Homfray Channel and majestic Toba Inlet, with water taxi return on the final day back to Okeover Inlet.

Please Note: Our expeditions are inherently more demanding on guests than our vacation tours. While the paddling distances and times are slightly longer, it is the moving of camp every day and especially the hauling of kayaks and equipment over rocky, steep, and very slippery terrain between the water and camp that requires a far greater level of fitness and coordination. Guests need to be aware they need to be physically capable to help haul kayaks and gear to and from camps and the water, even during low tides.

If you are unsure of your fitness levels – or if you have a pre-existing injury that may impact this ability – it is best to start with one of our camping vacations or Cabana Desolation Eco Resort packages first, before deciding whether an expedition is a good idea in the future.

Setting the Scene

While Desolation Sound is still a key component of this trip, our sea kayak expeditions are designed for those who are craving a more adventurous immersion into the mountains and fjords of this rugged coastal environment.

As you paddle up these remote passages, relative civilization is left behind and replaced by the remote and the wild. Granite cliffs rise sheer out of the ocean to icy peaks and dramatic mountain cirques formed by hidden glaciers hanging thousands of feet above.

The mountains that flank Toba in particular rise more than 7200 feet above your position at sea level, and the water drops more than 1600 feet to the ocean floor – an incredibly sheer drop from peak to valley in such short distance. The extremely rare, welcoming pebble beaches that reveal cosy wooded campsites are surrounded by seemingly impenetrable rainforest.

Torrential waterfalls, warm lakes, soaring peaks, thick forests, protected coves and bays, sandy beaches and salmon-bearing rivers are just some of the ecosystems that provide essential habitat for countless and  diverse species of wildlife .

Bald eagles are ever-present, seals and sea lions aggregate in huge colonies, while transient killer whales hunt them up and down the coast. Deer, wolves, cougars and black bears roam the forest, while in the remotest regions Grizzly bears feed on fish and vegetation along river banks and estuaries.

The pinnacle of a trip into the mountains, of course, is paddling the bright blue glacial fed waters of Toba Inlet and Pryce Channel. These waters provide breathtaking scenery at every new turn, from the impossibly high peaks of Toba to the serene forested valleys of Pryce Channel. The dramatic waterfalls of the narrow fjord crash with a tremendous roar from these alpine lakes and glaciers high above straight into the ocean below, and depending on the time of year, sometimes cascading hundreds of feet into the inlet itself!

Waking in the morning and sipping coffee beneath these towering mountains and ancient trees is a truly humbling experience – and one not to be missed.

What to Expect on our Sea Kayak Expeditions?

Expedition tours are rated at Level 3 on our Trip Difficulty Chart. Using the ‘five characteristics’ of our difficulty rating, here is an explanation of what guests should expect on expeditions:

  • Far from population centres.
  • Little, if any, boat traffic.
  • Lengthy waits for any emergency help and care (i.e. nearest hospital).
  • Guests with severe health and dietary requirements that potentially require immediate medical intervention (e.g. anaphylaxis, heart condition, seizure disorder, etc) should know that evacuations will be delayed and instead consider a less remote vacation tour or Cabana Desolation Eco Resort package .
  • As all associated costs arising from evacuations (including travel) are the responsibility of the evacuee , this is something that should be considered.
  • Guests need a willing and positive attitude to ‘dig in’ if the conditions require it, and an understanding of the true nature of the trip before you reserve.
  • Common issues may be overuse injuries making it impossible to finish the trip and thus requiring evacuation.
  • Consider selecting a double kayak to help mitigate this risk.
  • Planning, preparing and executing all meals and snacks for 12 people for a 6-7 day tour is certainly an impressive feat. As a result, we are simply unable to adjust our set-menu beyond some of the most common requirements .

Terrain Challenges

  • Guests require the ability to carry equipment and kayaks over slippery intertidal terrain with potential hazards such as sharp rocks, barnacles and oysters.
  • Guests should expect tenting on the forest floor or small undeveloped islands. Tent pads should not be expected on any sites on these tours.
  • Guests should expect a mix of digging cat holes, basic outhouses, and thunder boxes when using the bathroom.
  • This may include early mornings and paddling later into the afternoon than the Level 2 tours. Guests are expected to help set up and take down camp with the guides.
  • These tours are suitable for those with a good level of overall fitness and ideally some overnight kayaking experience.
  • Guests with little or no kayaking experience may be suitable for these tours if they are strong and have a good to excellent level of physical fitness.

Although we aim to follow a set itinerary, our guides may need to amend this due to weather, group dynamics, and overall fitness and paddling abilities of the group. Having a positive and flexible attitude is always important.

Which Expedition is Right For Me?

We know Desolation Sound and the remote channels and inlets to the north better than anyone, and have created two distinct sea kayak expeditions that offer complete immersion in this incredible landscape in unique and interesting ways,.

Our 6-Day ‘Desolation & Redonda Islands’ loop expedition starts and ends with guests launching and landing at our Okeover Inlet launch site in Penrose Bay. This trip typically aims to circumnavigate West Redonda Island, spending the first and last nights in Desolation Sound itself with plenty of time to explore the more remote Lewis, Pryce and Waddington Channels.

Our 7-Day ‘Epic Toba Inlet and Waterfalls’ one-way expedition launches from our Okeover Inlet base and paddles progressively deeper into the immense coastal mountains. Groups will spend a couple of nights in Desolation Sound before departing north up spectacular Homfray Channel, and aim to spend 3 full days exploring the channels and inlets of the Coast Mountains, with unbelievably turquoise waters, cascading waterfalls, and sheer mountain landscapes. On the final day, guests and guides (and equipment) are picked up by a local water taxi and returned to our Okeover Inlet base.

Both of these amazing adventures offer unique perspectives of this fascinating and memorable part of the British Columbia coast, and complement each other for those that wish to return year after year.

Let Us Take Care of Logistics

Preparing food, setting camps, planning routes, reading charts, interpreting weather; these stressful yet incredibly important activities can often take a casual paddler out of their comfort zone, especially when entering more challenging and remote areas of the coast. Our guided trips into these mountains are designed to take these worries out of your hands and allow you to soak in every sight and sound and truly experience this incredible landscape.

All our guides are fully-trained and certified sea kayak guides, and have extensive experience kayaking in these waters – and beyond – over numerous years and in all conditions.

Amongst these mountains it seems impossible at times to find even a rocky beach for lunch, let alone a suitable place to put up tents and spend the night. With over 25 years of experience in this area, we know  the best spots, and will lead you to hidden campsites nestled snugly beneath ancient forests.

Furthermore, we have access to private tenured sites throughout this area for all group sizes, guaranteeing the most comfortable camps in the most convenient locations, exclusively for our guests.

Should I Paddle a Single or a Double Kayak?

On all our 6-day expedition camping tours, at least 2 double kayaks will be used. On our 7-day expedition camping tours, at least 3 doubles will be used.

If the majority of guests indicate that they prefer single kayaks, the doubles will still be brought on the trip and guests will take turns paddling a double kayak throughout the duration of the tour.

Double kayaks provide greater stability, and are very useful on longer days to help tired paddlers maintain pace with the group. If you are inexperienced or in any way unsure of which type of kayak to choose, we highly recommend selecting a double kayak for your camping tour.

Creative Meals in Remote Environments

At the heart of our guided trips is the comfort and satisfaction of our guests. Providing healthy, delicious, creative meals in an inspiring and safe environment has been the cornerstone of our philosophy for decades, despite the remote locations we paddle into!

In spite of the challenges associated with wilderness kayaking trips, our guides spare no luxury, using local ingredients wherever possible to create healthy and hearty meals far removed from typical camping fare. In season fruits and vegetables, as well as locally sourced meat and seafood, provide the backbone of our meals, leaving our guests more than satisfied after a long day of exploration and exercise!

However there are certain dietary requirements that are very difficult to cater for in these remote camping environments. For some, a surcharge will apply to the tour price, while other very restrictive diets may unfortunately unable to be provided.

group of multi coloured kayaks

Route Considerations

Our sea kayak expeditions can be expected to move camp every day and paddle 2.5-3 hours at a time, before and after lunch. Distance covered may be anywhere between 8-12 nautical miles a day.

Our routes are flexible and dependent on many factors, including weather, time of year and group dynamic and abilities.

Typically a 6-day expedition tour will aim to circumnavigate West Redonda Island, while the 7-day one-way expedition paddles deep into Toba Inlet via Homfray Channel, before being picked up for a water taxi return to our Okeover base.

Whether looping or one-way, guests start and return (either via kayak or water taxi) to our private launch site in Okeover Inlet, meaning there are no bus or van transports required. Simply drive in to our launch site just north of Powell River and return once your adventure has concluded!

Please Note:  Our expedition tours are inherently more demanding on guests than our vacation tours.

One of our multi-day kayak tours posing at the mouth of Toba Inlet

The mountains that flank Toba in particular rise more than 7200 feet above your position at sea level, and the water drops more than 1600 feet to the ocean floor – an incredibly sheer drop from peak to valley in such short distance. The extremely rare, welcoming pebble beaches that reveal cosy wooded campsites are surrounded by seemingly impenetrable rainforest.

Waking in the morning and sipping coffee beneath these towering mountains and ancient trees is a truly humbling experience – and one not to be missed.

Expedition tours are rated at Level 3 on our Trip Difficulty Chart. Using the ‘five characteristics’ of our difficulty rating, here is an explanation of what guests should expect on expeditions:

  • Planning, preparing and executing all meals and snacks for 12 people for a 6-7 day tour is certainly an impressive feat. As a result, we are simply unable to adjust our set-menu  beyond some of the most common requirements .
  • These tours are suitable for those with a  good  level of overall fitness and ideally some overnight kayaking experience.

This is a bucket list kayaking and hiking river tour that has everything you need for a world class trip..

  • 7 hour guided tour launching at the base of the Hoover Dam
  • Soak in the geothermal hot springs
  • Hike to waterfalls, a sauna cave and slot canyons
  • Visit historic sites
  • Enjoy a catered lunch along with snacks, juice, and water
  • 12 mile flat water one-way paddle
  • Gear/equipment provided

‍ This journey is perfect for an adventure of a lifetime!

About this tour.

Kayak from the mighty Hoover Dam all year! Evolution Expeditions secures the necessary permit which provides a fish-eye view of the massive Hoover Dam from its base during its launch. The adventure starts with a descent down the original road carved into the canyon walls to create this colossal project of the 1930s. Kayak from the base of the Hoover Dam down the Colorado River, and through the Black Canyon. Steam inside the sauna cave and soak in geothermal hot spring pools hidden within side-canyons. Explore the stops along the way to view waterfalls, wildlife, the emerald green waters, and the dramatic landscape, all while hiking up the Nevada and Arizona shorelines and then take a plunge into the refreshing Colorado River.

Be prepared to spot desert bighorn sheep, coyotes, falcons, bald eagles, and different types of migratory waterfowl while paddling the twelve-mile stretch. Enjoy the beauty of the Black Canyon and the history behind 1921 water gauging sites. This kayak tour is a full day of paddling, hiking, and marveling in the beauty of the canyon. Be prepared, this is a challenging tour; beginner paddlers are often up for the challenge and advanced paddlers are never disappointed.

We offer top of the line gear and equipment with sit inside Prijon touring kayaks with rudders that have padded backs and padded seats, NRS life vests, and Aqua Bound paddles. All our guides are WFA/CPR certified and go through an extensive training program to provide excellent customer service and ensure guest safety.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION:

**Self drive participants will be shuttled from the morning meet up location to the launch point and will receive a shuttle back to the meet up location after the tour.

**Round trip shuttle service from Las Vegas hotels is subject to minimum participant requirements and departs from three locations, The Venetian, Bellagio, and Mandalay Bay.

Las Vegas Hotel Pick up is 90-110 minutes before the start time (e.g. 8:00 am tour times will pick-up: Mandalay Bay 6:30 am, Bellagio 6:20 am, Venetian 6:10 am).

Participant permits are secured on a first-come, first-served basis. Permits that we secure for you are included in the price of your tour, sell out quickly because the National Park Service limits the amount of paddle craft that are launched from the base of the Hoover Dam. Advance booking is highly recommended and confirmation will be based on permit availability. PLEASE REMEMBER TO BRING PHOTOGRAPHIC IDENTIFICATION, as security personnel managing the Hoover Dam launch site will deny access if identification is not available. This is a very time-sensitive tour, meaning, security that escorts our guests to the base of the Hoover Dam for the launch, will not wait for anyone arriving past the scheduled morning check in time. PLEASE ARRIVE ON TIME... Self drive participants must arrive 40 minutes before their scheduled launch time.

***Both beginners willing to embrace the challenge and experienced kayakers need to have the physical fitness to maintain an ACTIVE PADDLE through 12 miles of flat water with minimal current. Weather conditions may add an extra level of difficulty, and cancellation protocols are in place to ensure safety for all our river trips. If you are unsure of your physical fitness level, we highly recommend starting with our half-day tour through the Black Canyon.

expedition kayak tour

Totally worth it! Incredible to kayak below the Hoover dam and visit several spots along the river. Our guide Michael was awesome, very attentive and informative. It was a hot day but the cold water along the kayak trip was so refreshing!

We LOVED our adventure today! Chanjira was an awesome guide. She was funny, patient and knowledge. Pointed out different wildlife, plants and explained a lot of history of the area. Hoover Dam was cool to see from the bottom. We loved the hot springs and relaxing in the warm pools. So fun to kayak down the Colorado river.
