Gilmour's fifth album will be his first LP of solo material since the release of  Rattle That Lock in 2015. The new album's first single, " The Piper's Call ," was released in April.

Will David Gilmour Play Pink Floyd Songs on His Upcoming Tour?

While Gilmour has played all eras of Pink Floyd songs on past tours, he said he may not perform  any from the band's '70s albums during the upcoming shows.

Noting other decades "might be better represented," he told Uncut , "At least one from the '60s. The one we've done in the past is 1967's 'Astronomy [Domine].' That's always entertaining and fun and gets people off to a happy start. There's songs from [1987's]  A Momentary Lapse of Reason  and [1994's]  The Division Bell  albums. I mean, I think 'High Hopes' is as good as anything we ever did at any time."

The touring band for Gilmour's upcoming concerts features bassist and backing singer Guy Pratt, keyboardists Greg Phillinganes and Rob Gentry, drummer Adam Betts, guitarist Ben Worsley and backing vocalists Louise Marshall, Hattie Webb and Charlie Webb.

Early access tickets to the upcoming U.S. shows will be available on Wednesday at 10.m. local time, but fans must sign up at Gilmour's website . General sale tickets for the shows go on sale  Friday at 10 a.m. local time.

David Gilmour (born March 6, 1946) is a revered British guitarist, singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist hailing from Cambridge, England, UK. On top of being a successful solo artist, Gilmour is best known as the guitarist and co-vocalist in the seminal progressive rock band Pink Floyd.

Encouraged by his parents to pursue music, Gilmour took an early interest in the sounds of Bill Haley, Elvis Presley and the Everly Brothers. Before long Gilmour began practicing the guitar, later meeting future Pink Floyd members Syd Barrett and Roger Waters at Cambridgeshire High School for Boys. The singer-songwriter went on to busk around France and Spain with Barrett in 1965 in a tumultuous period for Gilmour. By 1967 he had been invited to join Pink Floyd and along with Barrett, Nick Mason, Roger Waters and Richard Wright, made musical history selling over 250 million records worldwide. After Barrett’s departure from the band in 1968 Gilmour provided lead vocals notably on the albums “Dark Side of the Moon” and “Wish You Were Here”.

10 years later, in an attempt to utilise all of his musical and songwriting talents, Gilmour turned his attention to recording a solo album. The 1978 self-titled release, marked by its bluesy, guitar-driven sound, earned strong reviews from critics and peaked at No. 17 in the UK. Gilmour’s sophomore album “About Face” was released in 1984 and became a tool to distance himself away from Pink Floyd and provide a commentary for his thoughts. In 1987 Gilmour took complete control of Pink Floyd with the departure of Roger Waters which resulted in “A Momentary Lapse of Reason” in 1987 and “The Division Bell” in 1994.

In 2005 Gilmour was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for his services to music, after which he released his third solo album “On an Island” in 2006. The live album “Live in Gdansk” appeared in 2010 followed by a collaborated with the electronic outfit the Orb on the album “Metallic Spheres”. A year later Rolling Stone magazine ranked him the 14th best guitarist of all time.

Live reviews

David Gilmour - what can you write about such a name? A concert with the singer and guitarist of one of the most famous rock bands in the world - Pink Floyd - is an event that you will never forget and that you should never miss.

Although David Gilmour is now an old grey-haired man, his voice still sounds like it did in the best Pink Floyd days. Live, his rendition of arguably their most famous song "Wish You Were Here", is performed in such a powerful way, that you'd think time had stopped for some decades. Together with piano and strings this song is unforgettable live.

I can't imagine what it would have been like back in the day. Another song that was worth the long, long journey to hear it live was "Shine On You Crazy Diamond". Especially in the acoustic version - it is unbelievable what Gilmour made out of this old classic. He started with a neverending intro morphing the song so that only experts in the audience recognized it from the initial strains.

All in all I can give everybody the tip to use the chance to go to a David Gilmour concert - You never know when it will be his last one. Forget songs like "The Wall" - these songs were made during a time Fink Floyd was successful - too successful in my eyes. The good songs were their earlier ones. And in concert, Gilmour reminded us of this fact.

David Jon Gilmour, CBE may not be a recognisable household name yet you only have to mention the name of his world famous band Pink Floyd and people suddenly realise David's importance to the genres of progressive and psychedelic rock.

Although this musician is considered one of the world's greatest guitarist by a number of celebrated publications, you really do have to watch him perform live in order to appreciate his musical talents. Although Gilmour is almost 70 years old, he does not miss one of those perfect notes all evening. Beginning with the spanning 'Breathe' followed by 'Time' he manages to hold the entire venue's attention with the simple movement of his guitar strings. The vocal also sounds really good considering that David was never a major vocalist in the original lineup. This is a fantastic way to hear the likes of 'Wish You Were Here' and 'Astronomy Domine' as Pink Floyd rarely tour anymore as a whole outfit. The addition of an orchestra gives a new dimension to the classic music and offers a new level of show to the whole operation.

The first Concert in Rome of the legendary guitar of Pink Floyd has been one of best live shows I've ever seen. The Playlist was incredible, ranging from the last tracks of Rattle That Lock up to the wonderful dreamy Fat Old Sun from "Atom Heart Mother".

The set of guitars Gilmour used included the relic sunburst Telecaster famous after his solo album "About Face", his Lap Steel, a blonde Gibson LA and the absolute rock legend "The Black Strat".

The dozen of guitar solos David played had his un-comparable taste and feeling. The second solo of Comfortably Numb, the best song in the human history, concluded the best event held in Rome for decades.

Thank you David for your art!

The concert was perfect. Gilmour is still able to sing like he's always sang. My problem was with the venue, eventhough the sound was amazing and much better than other venues, the entrance to the event was a total disaster. Without no particular reason, the security team kept us and almost have of the public, outside on line for more than half an hour, for we missed the first 5 songs, eventhough we arrived there before 8pm. I'd think twice going back to Radio City Music Hall for attending a concert there, and if so, we'd be sure to be there 2 hours ahead of the gig, to make sure we don't miss 30% of the show....

Thumbs down for Radio City security team!

Show espetacular.

The performance was awesome and that was what I was waiting for.

He played a mix of his and Pink Floyd's songs but I wish more visual effects on the big screen behind the stage. It showed movies only on some specific songs and not on all of them.

The ticket selling process was awful and I don't know if here is the right place to complain or not. We got three different place in three different tries for buying the tickets and the black market was huge outside the venue, and also many many fake tickets. The ID was supposed to be checked by the entrance but no one cared about it, funny!

5 Star Show all the way! One of the best shows I've ever seen. Sound was perfect, stage show was great and venue was ideal. He is the closest thing to the original Pink Floyd sound and feel as there original shows. I've seen the Wall Tour a few years back and this is what I've been missing all these years in my concert going experiences. This is one I will never forget and my buddies who didn't go are still kicking themselves! Best of wishes to David and his crew what a show!

Simply fantastic... he is not from this world. Worth every penny. Unforgettable show...perfectly produced...technically irretouchable. David Gilmour and his crew made me travel to the past through the classics Us and Then, Wish You Were Here, High Hopes, Astronomy Domine to the recent Girl on the Yellow Dress and Rattle that Lock to quote a few songs. If you have the opportunity and love Pink Ployd like me, you cannot miss this show...it will forever be in my mind...

Great show, started off a little slow but the fourth song was "Wish you were here" and that got the crowd going.

Very good sound quality, some excellent Gilmour solos, if you are a fan of great guitar playing don't miss David Gilmour and his Black Strat.

Finished off with a wonderful rendition of Comfortably Numb. It would be nice if he interacted with the crowd, more, there was very little crowd interaction.

David Gilmour Luck and Strange

David Gilmour has announced his new album ‘Luck and Strange’, to be released on 6th September and 21  Tour Dates at The Royal Albert Hall in London, The Circo Massimo in Italy, The Intuit Dome, The Hollywood Bowl in CA, and Madison Square Garden in NY.

'Luck and Strange’ was recorded over five months in Brighton and London and is Gilmour’s first album of new material in nine years. The record was produced by David and Charlie Andrew, best known for his work with alt-J and Marika Hackman. Of this new working relationship, David says, “We invited Charlie to the house, so he came and listened to some demos, and said things like, “Well, why does there have to be a guitar solo there?” and “Do they all fade out? Can’t some of them just end?”. He has a wonderful lack of knowledge or respect for this past of mine. He’s very direct and not in any way overawed, and I love that. That is just so good for me because the last thing you want is people just deferring to you.”

The majority of the album’s lyrics have been composed by Polly Samson, Gilmour’s co-writer and collaborator for the past thirty years. Samson says of the lyrical themes covered on ‘Luck and Strange’, “It’s written from the point of view of being older; mortality is the constant.” Gilmour elaborates, “We spent a load of time during and after lockdown talking about and thinking about those kind of things.” Polly has also found the experience of working with Charlie Andrew liberating, “He wants to know what the songs are about, he wants everyone who’s playing on them to have the ideas that are in the lyric informing their playing. I have particularly loved it for that reason.” The album features eight new tracks along with a beautiful reworking of The Montgolfier Brothers’ ‘Between Two Points’ and has artwork and photography by the renowned artist Anton Corbijn. Musicians contributing to the record include Guy Pratt & Tom Herbert on bass, Adam Betts, Steve Gadd and Steve DiStanislao on drums, Rob Gentry & Roger Eno on keyboards with string and choral arrangements by Will Gardner. The title track also features the late Pink Floyd keyboard player Richard Wright, recorded in 2007 at a jam in a barn at David’s house. Some contributions emerged from the live streams that Gilmour and family performed to a global audience during the lockdowns of 2020 and 2021; Romany Gilmour sings, plays the harp and appears on lead vocals on ‘Between Two Points’. Gabriel Gilmour also sings backing vocals. The album’s cover image, photographed and designed by Anton Corbijn, is inspired by a lyric written by Charlie Gilmour for the album’s final song ‘Scattered’. Of working with his family on ‘Luck and Strange’, David says, “Polly and I have been writing together for over thirty years and the Von Trapped live streams showed the great blend of Romany’s voice and harp-playing and that led us into a feeling of discarding some of the past that I’d felt bound to and that I could throw those rules out and do whatever I felt like doing, and that has been such a joy.” Luck and Strange 1. David Gilmour shares plans to tour for first time in eight years

He also teased he was soon to record more material

David Gilmour (Photo by Matthew Eisman/Getty Images)

David Gilmour has announced his plans to tour for the first time in eight years.

The former  Pink Floyd guitarist made the comments in a new interview with Uncut (via  Far Out and Neptune Pink Floyd ) , where he discussed potentially touring his upcoming album ‘ Luck and Strange ‘. It is set for release on September 6.

Speaking to the outlet, Gilmour said there was “an unwillingness to revisit the Pink Floyd of the ‘70s”, but would be more likely to perform songs from other decades: “Yeah, they might be better represented. I mean, at least one from the ’60s. The one we’ve done in the past is ‘Astronomy’ [‘The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn’, 1967]. That’s always entertaining and fun and gets people off to a happy start.

“There’s songs from the ‘Momentary Lapse Of Reason’ and ‘The Division Bell’ albums. I mean, I think ‘High Hopes’ is as good as anything we ever did at any time.”

Gilmour also spoke about the amendments he made to his touring band, reasoning: “It was all too robotic, and some people would have been better off in a Pink Floyd tribute band. So I thought we’d get people who are genuinely creative and give them a little more space. That’s the plan. So we’re going to have some of the younger guys alongside Guy and the Webb Sisters, who sang with Leonard Cohen on his last tours.”

Finally, the guitarist teased there was more unreleased material to come, saying he was planning more recording dates once the tour was finished, “which will practically force me to concentrate [on writing more songs]. I mean, we’ve got plenty more pieces of half-formed music that we can get started on. The intention is to get something else out as soon as possible.”

In the same interview, the guitarist and songwriter discussed The Beatles’ documentary  Get Back , calling it a “hard watch” . Directed by Peter Jackson in 2021, Get Back was constructed from over 60 hours of footage when they recorded their final album, 1970’s ‘Let It Be’.

He specifically noted “Paul being domineering and and John ducking back because of the moment he was in at the time and George leaving and coming back.”

“Horrible, really, I mean it’s lovely for us to watch, but I’m surprised Paul allowed it,” he said.

Gilmour also discussed the potential to have an ABBA Voyage -syle holographic Pink Floyd show , saying: “If someone came up with all the money and all the brilliant ideas – and then once we’ve agreed to a series of very, very difficult and onerous conditions – I’d say, ‘Yeah, OK.’”

In other news, the guitarist recently featured on Mark Knopfler’s re-recorded version of his song ‘Going Home’ alongside  Queen ‘s  Brian May ,  Bruce Springsteen ,  Black Sabbath ’s Tony Iommi,  Eric Clapton ,  Rolling Stones  guitarist  Ronnie Wood  and many more.

David Gilmour Is Touring. Just Don’t Ask for Pink Floyd Classics

By Andy Greene

Andy Greene

David Gilmour is planning to promote his upcoming solo album, Luck and Strange, with a rare tour. Just don’t show up expecting to hear Pink Floyd hits like “Wish You Were Here,” “Comfortably Numb,” or “Money.” In a new interview with Uncut , Gilmour said he has an “unwillingness to revisit the Pink Floyd of the Seventies” and would rather focus the set around his new album and other periods of Floyd’s history.

“[Other decades] might be better represented,” he said. “I mean, at least one from the Sixties. The one we’ve done in the past is 1967’s ‘Astronomy.’ That’s always entertaining and fun and gets people off to a happy start. There’s songs from [1987’s] A Momentary Lapse of Reason and [1994’s] The Division Bell albums. I mean, I think ‘High Hopes’ is as good as anything we ever did at any time.”

“Sadly @rogerwaters you are antisemitic to your rotten core,” she wrote. “Also a Putin apologist and a lying, thieving, hypocritical, tax-avoiding, lip-synching, misogynistic, sick-with-envy, megalomaniac. Enough of your nonsense.” Gilmour shared the Tweet, adding “Every word demonstrably true.”

Listen: David Gilmour Shares “Dark and Velvet Nights,” Third Preview Single from ‘Luck and Strange’

David Gilmour returns today with “Dark and Velvet Nights,” the third preview single from the legendary Pink Floyd guitarist’s forthcoming studio album Luck and Strange . In this latest dispatch from his long-awaited first full-length offering since 2015’s Rattle That Lock , the icon steers into a heavier sound than folk-rooted precursors “The Piper’s Call” and “Between Two Points,” giving a dynamic and affecting vocal and guitar performance reflective of six decades of expertise.

“The music sprang out one day. It was so exciting to have come across this groove,” Gilmour offers in an accompanying statement. “Polly had given me a beautiful poem for our wedding anniversary, which was sitting on the desk right next to me, so I picked it up and sang it on the track, to hear what it would sound like with words. I played it to Polly, and she said, ‘Lovely, great, I’ll need to fiddle with it a bit.’ So she added a couple of verses, and there it was — very serendipitous.”

The resultant release from this creative outpouring is a moody, gritty meditation on love, trust and their counterpoints. Gilmour broods and commands with ripping guitar work and contemplative vocals, bolstering a stark and grooving beat framed always by a dark, abstract and spacious atmosphere. This move boldly contrasts first impressions of the project, subverting and amplifying expectations as the artist has for generations.

Luck and Strange is set to release on September 6 via Sony Music. The project–which he termed the “best album I’ve made” since Dark Side of the Moon in a cover feature for Prog –is available to pre-order on vinyl and CD formats now . To support the album release, Gilmour will plot his first tour since 2016; read more about this highly-anticipated and high-demand excursion here . • “I don’t know why I didn’t discover one of these a long time ago”

Pink Floyd icon David Gilmour readies a new studio album featuring a Gibson ES-335

Following a statement made on David Gilmour’s YouTube channel, Guitar World reports that Gilmour enjoyed using a Gibson ES-335 on the solo of his single “Dark and Velvet Nights,” which is set to feature on the forthcoming album, Luck and Strange .

Sitting in front of a guitar rack that contains a rather nice Epiphone Casino , Gilmour says, “Well I’ve not got a huge history with Gibson guitars, a few, but this one is one I’ve bought comparatively recently to have a different tone, a different thing. This is a very, very different sort of guitar to what I’m used to.

“The guitar solo on ‘Dark and Velvet Nights’ was done on this one. I don’t know why I didn’t discover one of these a long time ago. Every time you play a nice guitar that you’re not used to, it gives you something. Sometimes it just gives you a song.”

Entering the mix at 3:40, Gilmour’s solo on “Dark and Velvet Nights” utilizes the neck pickup of his vintage dot-inlay ES-335 to predictably fluid and lyrical effect. Check out the video below.

Luck and Strange will be released on September 6,  with pre-orders in progress now . Produced by Alt-J producer Charlie Andrew, the album is sure to contain many surprises. The two connected through a direct message on Instagram, had a meeting, and the rest is history.

21  tour dates  are planned in support of the album, with performances at the Royal Albert Hall in London, the Circo Massimo in Rome, the Intuit Dome and Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, and Madison Square Garden in New York.

The record boasts an impressive lineup of musical talent: Guy Pratt and Tom Herbert lay down the basslines, while Adam Betts, Steve Gadd, and Steve DiStanislao feature on drums. Rob Gentry and Roger Eno add their magic on keyboards, with Will Gardner weaving in lush string and choral arrangements. Adding a poignant touch, the title track features a special contribution from the late Richard Wright of Pink Floyd, captured in a 2007 jam session in a barn at Gilmour’s house.

New to the ES-335? Here are seven reasons why you need one in your guitar collection .

Conte questions his players’ mentality as Napoli ‘melt like snow in the sunshine’

VERONA, ITALY - AUGUST 18: Antonio Conte head coach of Napoli SSC looks on during the Serie A match between Hellas Verona and Napoli at Stadio Marcantonio Bentegodi on August 18, 2024 in Verona, Italy. (Photo by Emmanuele Ciancaglini/Getty Images)

Being an ultra in pre-season can be a little like a songwriter going into the studio to lay down some new tracks. The opening game is launch day for the first single off the album. How will the crowd react when it’s performed live for the first time?

Milan ’s ultras spent the summer workshopping a chant for new coach Paulo Fonseca. They wanted to have a little fun with it and touch upon how the club didn’t appoint their first, second or third choice when hiring a replacement for Stefano Pioli. The first lyric is “we wanted Conte”.

Milan didn’t pursue him, in the end, because as Zlatan Ibrahimovic, now a senior advisor to Milan’s ownership and senior management, said at Fonseca’s unveiling: “Milan has a head coach, not a manager. We didn’t consider Conte because, with all due respect to him and he’s a great coach, he wasn’t what we were looking for.”

Milan, in keeping with the trend in modern football, include the coach in recruitment without letting him drive it. They plan their squad according to age profile, contract life, budget and how they believe a team should be assembled to be competitive. As Ibrahimovic joked only the other day, “Cardinale (Milan’s owner, Gerry) wants to spend more but I tell him: ‘No’. We only spend what we need in order to strengthen.” They’re disciplined.

david gilmour on tour 2023

Word of how Ibrahimovic viewed him got back to Conte in the way these things usually do; a reporter asked him for a reaction. The 55-year-old didn’t push back on the definition. Instead, he doubled down.

Sat beside Napoli owner Aurelio De Laurentiis at his presentation as the Partenopei’s new coach, he did the intimidating Salentino mumble that precedes an assertion of pure Conte-ness. “That’s how I look at myself,” he said. “The president knows that very well. I want to have a say, chapter and verse. And perhaps at other clubs, this might be the cause of some bother.”

Napoli are not one of those clubs.

De Laurentiis is not one of these new wave, analytics au fait owners. At Conte’s unveiling, he told an anecdote about going to England in the 1990s as if it were only yesterday. “I encountered the most successful team at the time, Manchester United , and I realised why they were so successful,” De Laurentiis recalled. “They had a super coach in (Sir Alex) Ferguson who, in the meantime, had taken on the role of a true ‘manager’. From the job he did and his approach to it, I could see that even the smallest detail can contribute to success. That’s why I chose Conte. In him, I not only saw a great coach but a great manager.”

It’s why, in the past, De Laurentiis appointed Rafa Benitez. The Spaniard was granted a level of autonomy he felt he’d earned as a Champions League -winning manager. Benitez then went out and found Kalidou Koulibaly and Dries Mertens. He also persuaded Jose Callejon and Gonzalo Higuain to leave Real Madrid for a club they’d never ordinarily consider. Benitez won the Coppa Italia and the Super Cup and even though his achievements were surpassed by Maurizio Sarri and Luciano Spalletti, the players he recommended worked out tremendously well for Napoli.

david gilmour on tour 2023

Higuain broke the single-season scoring record in Serie A and moved to Juventus for €90million (£76.7m; $99.4m). Koulibaly could have fetched a world-record fee for a defender. In the end, he stayed so long Napoli had to settle for the highest price paid for a centre-back over 30. Mertens left for Galatasaray as a free agent, but he’d given everything and the club wanted nothing in return. The Belgian is the club’s all-time leading scorer and called his baby boy Ciro, a Neapolitan name.

Might Conte do the same as Benitez? Rather than scare him, he filled De Laurentiis with “great enthusiasm”.

A new sporting director, Giovanni Manna, was appointed to close the deals the manager demanded. Within a fortnight, Napoli signed flying wing-back Leonardo Spinazzola on a free, hoping he might recover the form he showed at Euro 2021. They then bought defender Rafa Marin from Real Madrid and cut a cheque for €40million to buy Torino captain Alessandro Buongiorno , the centre-back many expected to start for Italy in Germany only for Riccardo Calafiori suddenly to take Spalletti’s fancy. This was, briefly, Manna from heaven. Players were arriving quickly and in time for pre-season.

But Napoli’s transfer window then ground to a halt.

Frustratingly for Conte, he could see the money he wished to spend. The money walked, talked and even trained alone. The money was locked up in Victor Osimhen. Top scorer in Serie A when Napoli won the title in 2023, Osimhen has asked to leave, but Napoli haven’t been able to sell him.

No one has stumped up the buy-out clause that was written into the new contract he signed over the winter. No one thinks he is worth the reported €130million it would take to extract him from it. Even half that figure looks high considering his injury record and the fact his 2022-23 campaign feels like an exception rather than the rule.

“The situation is clear,” Manna said. “(Victor’s) desire is clear. There are 12 days of the transfer window remaining and we will try to find the best solution, but it has to be one that’s to our satisfaction as well as his. He is a top player.” In other words, as was the case with Koulibaly for many seasons, Napoli will not let Osimhen go for a discount. The hope is Paris Saint-Germain pick up the phone now Goncalo Ramos is injured or Chelsea start thinking about him again after Samu Omorodion ’s move from Atletico Madrid fell through.

david gilmour on tour 2023

In the meantime, Conte’s eyes have turned ever more glacial, his mumbles have taken on the effect of bubbling and boiling blood.

Where’s Billy Gilmour ? What’s the latest on Scott McTominay ? Is David Neres finally here? “He’s on holiday,” Manna joked. Why hasn’t Romelu Lukaku moved into the spare room? Conte has tried to manage expectations since he walked into the Palazzo Reale for his unveiling. He was taking over a team that had overseen the worst title defence in Serie A history. A team that had finished 41 points behind champions Inter. A team that had finished 10th.

But these are the conditions in which Conte won titles at Juventus and Chelsea. And so, as he sees it, he is a victim of his own success, condemned to win.

By making these things look easy, people just don’t understand how hard it is. They forget this squad was built to play 4-3-3. They forget Piotr Zielinski left for Inter on a free transfer. They need reminding that Napoli’s captain, Giovanni Di Lorenzo , had a torrid Euros and needed to write a letter to the fans effectively renewing his vows to the club after “I entertained the idea of leaving”. They forget his agent wasn’t the only one agitating for a move. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia ’s representative also said, during the Euros, “we want to leave”.

It’s a lot for a manager to manage.

After Napoli needed penalties to knock out second-division Modena in the Coppa Italia, Conte put everyone on alert. He then sounded the siren again on the eve of his first game in Serie A away to Verona. “A total rebuild is needed,” Conte said. “From the foundations. When a team puts 10 or 12 players on the transfer market, it means there’s a rebuild underway and it’s going to take time, patience, humility from the fanbase and understanding. We can’t allow ourselves to get carried away.”

Opta’s algorithm is predicting Napoli will finish eighth this season. “We can’t think last year was a fluke,” Conte insisted. “It was not a fluke. I guarantee that. Whoever thinks it was the result of bad luck or other situations, watch out. The league table speaks for itself, as does the gap between us and the rest — enormous gaps!”

david gilmour on tour 2023

If Conte thought he had it bad, spare a thought for his opponent on Sunday, Paolo Zanetti.

Verona needed a play-off to stay up in the year Napoli won the league. Last season, the Guardia di Finanza, a law enforcement agency under the authority of the minister of economy and finance, seized the holding company that owns a majority stake in the club. Verona were forced to sell their best players over the winter, including Isak Hien to Atalanta and Cyril Ngonge to Napoli for €18million. That they stayed up under Marco Baroni, who got the Lazio job on the back of it, was a miracle. It will take another one this season.

Or will it? Playing in their pristine white Armani jerseys, Napoli, to use Conte’s phrase, “melted like snow in the sunshine” at the Bentegodi.

They were without the injured Buongiorno, Kvara then went off with a blow to the head shortly after Jackson Tchatchoua, one of Verona’s eclectic signings, blocked a goal-bound shot. Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa hit the upright. But the way Napoli faded in the second half was, in Conte’s words, “worrying”.

david gilmour on tour 2023

Verona showed, once again, that you can find good players anywhere. Their goalscorers, Daniel Mosquera and Dailon Livramento, cost €1.1million combined. Mosquera, a Colombian from C.D America, had never played in Europe before. Livramento has been capped once by Cape Verde and arrived from the Dutch second division. “We surprised everyone a bit, even ourselves,” Zanetti said after the 3-0 win. “We were coming off a bad defeat in the Coppa Italia (to Cesena).”

It was the first time Conte had lost on the opening day of the season. Usually, he uses these games to make a statement of intent, like when Juventus beat Parma 4-1 in 2011 and Inter destroyed Lecce 4-0 in 2019. This was a statement of a different kind. “I can only apologise to the people of Naples,” Conte said.

Two years ago, Napoli began the season at the same stadium against the same opponent with a 5-2 win. It was the beginning of their first league title since 1990. Many of the faces are familiar, but they are unrecognisable from that team.

“We could sign one, two, three, four, however many players the clubs wants. This is relative,” Conte said. “The problem needs solving at source and it’s not easy to find a solution… What I’ve found with this group of lads is when the going gets tough, they find it hard. And that’s a serious problem because it’s not something you can coach in a short space of time.”

For now, though, Conte will just have to do what he thinks he’s best at. He’ll just have to manage.
