‘Carnival is not playing with y’all’: Cruise passenger warns against bringing drugs onboard after this new protocol

‘exactly one of the reasons why i’m not going on carnival.’.

If you’re planning on sneaking some drugs aboard a Carnival cruise ship, just don’t. That’s the advice this passenger named Gloria ( @coppertoneqt ) is giving TikTokers. In a recent clip that’s garnered over 516,000 views, she recounts an incident with a drug-sniffing dog.

According to Gloria, the dog immediately clocked one traveler’s bag as containing an illicit substance. Carnival staff members carted the bag away, which was present outside of the guest’s room. However, the guest wasn’t there, but that didn’t stop staff members from outing their name, because Gloria knew the identity of the passenger upon witnessing the suitcase confiscation.

No partying allowed

“When I tell you Carnival is not playing with y’all? We just saw these people get their suitcase confiscated. The dog…was going about all the suitcases,” the TikToker says into the camera.

Then, she begins to walk towards an area off-camera.

“Let me show y’all the other suitcases, hold on. Dog was going by the suitcases and the dog stopped, like…” she holds up her hand, illustrating the dog’s behavior. “And they took the suitcase…hold on.” Other people’s voices can be heard outside of the frame.

She then flips the camera around to show a hallway with some bags lined up against the wall. “The suitcases were all down there like that. And they came down here to these people,” she continues. “And the dog stopped in front of the suitcase like, it’s drugs in here and they took the suitcase.”

Closing out the clip, she shouts out the name of the passenger who had their suitcase taken by Carnival staff.

Re-branding the ratchet?

Cruise enthusiasts have speculated that Carnival’s stringent new drug-busting policies are steeped in an imaging push. This Quora discussion, for instance, speaks to the reputation Carnival has among some guests. The poster asks: “Why is Carnival Cruise Line so ghetto and janky?” And many seemed to concur with this assessment. One responder called Carnival “the Walmart of Cruise lines.”

It doesn’t help either that Carnival’s been at the center of controversies involving passenger safety. A 2021 data breach saw both customer and employee information compromised. Also, massive on-board passenger brawls going viral won’t be improving the line’s image anytime soon either.

The Street reported in July 2024 that in addition to tightening up data security protocols, Carnival is getting strict with drugs. According to the outlet, Carnival brand ambassador John Heald is focusing on pot-smoking passengers.

“As for the drug detection dogs, well let me say that they have, along with our no tolerance rules and enforcement, made a massive difference to the problem of people thinking it is legal and allowed to use marijuana on their cruise. It isn’t,” Heald said.

The Daily Dot previously reported on a Cruise enthusiast’s staunch anti-weed-edible PSA for passengers. While some folks looking to unwind on a cruise may think sneaking some gummies on board is fine, she doesn’t. The TikToker would go on to explain that the risk is not worth the repercussions. She adds that throngs of passengers are constantly caught with drugs on them. And due to the severity of charges they face, TikTokers are less likely to see posts from folks who’ve been apprehended.

The cruise expert remarks that this harsh reality is a stark contrast to other cruise-related videos. Like one where a Carnival passenger shows their method for sneaking alcohol onboard .

Carnival explicitly states that its cruise ships are “drug-free zones.” This philosophy even extends to areas where pot smoking has been decriminalized. Oh, and if you’re a card-carrying medical marijuana user, you aren’t exempt, either. The line writes on its website: “Carnival recognizes that some states in the U.S. have legalized the use of recreational and/or medical marijuana. However, cruise lines are required to follow U.S. federal law, which strictly prohibits possession and use of marijuana and other illegal substances. Consequently, marijuana, including marijuana for medical purposes is not allowed on board.”

A divisive policy

Some folks, like this Reddit user , are applauding Carnival for its strong stance. “Carnival is finally using drug dogs…no more smelly halways and balconies,” they penned.

One commenter who responded to Gloria’s video said they skirt drug dog checks by stashing their bag in their room. However, the TikToker said this isn’t a foolproof solution. “They check at the port too!” she wrote.

Another person seemed to corroborate Gloria’s warning. “I was in carnival sunrise last month to Jamaica they had a dog walking the decks every day,” they penned.

And then one was thankful to have seen Gloria’s post. “I’m going on my first carnival cruise on friday and i was positively taking my green stuff i saw this video for a reason,” they said.

The Daily Dot has reached out to Carnival via email and Gloria via TikTok comment.

Oceania Cruises will sail from Port Tampa Bay beginning in 2026

  • Shauna Muckle Times staff

An new luxury cruise line is coming to Tampa Bay. Oceania Cruises will set sail for the Caribbean and Panama Canal starting in February 2026.

The 670-guest Insignia ship will offer guests five options of seven- to 20-night cruises from February to April, according to a media release from Port Tampa Bay. Passengers will dock in Costa Maya, Mexico; Puerto Limon, Costa Rica; Cartagena, Colombia; and other similar destinations.

Oceania, a Miami-based subsidiary of Norwegian Cruise Lines, operates eight luxury vessels that traverse all seven continents. The line’s “Around the World” cruise takes guests to over 100 destinations in 180 days — prices for 2026 start at $42,000. On board, guests can access fine-dining options like Polo Grill, an American steakhouse, and Toscana, an Italian venue.

Starting prices for sailings from Tampa currently range from $2,200 for a seven-night Caribbean cruise to $5,800 for a 20-night Panama Canal cruise.

Here’s a look at the five itineraries that will sail from Tampa in 2026:

  • Tropical Harmony : February 22-March 3, nine days. Starting in Bridgetown, Barbados; Oranjestad, Aruba; Montego Bay, Jamaica; Costa Maya, Mexico; Cozumel, Mexico; ending in Tampa.
  • Leeward Isles Serenade : March 3-18, 15 days. Starting in Tampa; San Juan, Puerto Rico; St. Thomas, Virgin Islands; Philipsburg, St. Maarten; St. John’s, Antigua; Roseau, Dominica; Basseterre, St. Kitts; Frederiksted, St. Croix; Tortola, British Virgin Islands; ending in Tampa.
  • Western Caribbean Escape : March 18-25, seven days. Starting in Tampa; Cozumel; Belize City, Belize; Roatan, Honduras; Costa Maya; ending in Tampa.
  • Palms and Panama Canal : March 25-April 4, ten days. Tampa; Cozumel; Costa Maya; Belize City; Roatan; Puerto Limon; Colon, Panama; ending with one overnight stay in Panama City, Panama. The ship crosses the Panama Canal during daylight hours.
  • Panama Canal Connoisseur : March 25-April 14, 20 days. Starting in Tampa; Cozumel; Costa Maya; Belize City; Roatan; Puerto Limon; Colon; one overnight stay in Panama City; Cartagena; Willemstad, Curacao; Oranjestad, Aruba; Montego Bay; George Town, Cayman Islands; ending in Miami.

Port Tampa Bay now has six cruise lines that dock at the port. Oceania will join Carnival Cruise Line, Celebrity Cruises, Royal Caribbean International, Norwegian Cruise Line and Margaritaville at Sea.

Cruises represent a quarter of the port’s revenue, and that share is rising. In fiscal year 2025, the port expects 373 sailings with around 1.6 million passengers. This year, around 1.2 million people are projected to sail from Tampa’s port as the industry makes a rapid comeback post-pandemic.

Shorter, seven-day cruises from Baltimore will visit Princess Cays or Half Moon Cay, Celebration Key, and Nassau.

Bahamas cruise guide: Best itineraries, planning tips and things to do

Ashley Kosciolek

If you've cruised or are planning to cruise to someplace warm, it's likely that the Bahamas will pop up on your itinerary — and for good reason. Found on both Bahamas-exclusive sailings and Caribbean voyages , Bahamian ports offer plenty of sun and sand, as well as opportunities for shopping, gambling and more.

The islands appeal to both new and seasoned cruisers. Their proximity to Florida makes them quick, easy and affordable to reach by ship, whether for a quick overnight trip or a call as part of a longer voyage.

Read on for all you need to know when planning a sailing that includes the Bahamas — one of the cruise industry's most popular destinations.

For more cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Why cruise to the Bahamas?

cruise carnival to jamaica

In the Bahamas, the people are as warm as the weather, offering greetings and friendly smiles at every turn. The main draws, however, are the beaches and bright blue waters, which offer plenty of places to snorkel and scuba dive or to work on your tan while sipping a cocktail or two.

One of the best reasons to visit is that the islands are close to Florida — the cruise capital of the world. The Bahamas are frequented by most major cruise lines and show up on a large number of itineraries, from two-nighters to longer voyages.

The takeaway: Passengers have lots of choices. If you want to travel to the Bahamas by cruise ship, you can easily find a cruise line, length and price point to meet your needs.

The Bahamas is a great place to visit, as long as you set your expectations. Nassau, which is the largest port and the country's capital city, is often crowded with cruise ships. Locals will approach you with offers for everything from taxi rides to hair braiding. It can be overwhelming, so be prepared to politely decline if you're not interested.

When do cruises go to the Bahamas?

cruise carnival to jamaica

Cruise ships call on the Bahamas all year. However, midwinter is generally the best time to go. Prices are cheaper, there are fewer passengers because children are in school and the weather isn't as sweltering as it is in summer. Plus, wave season — when cruise lines offer some of the best deals you'll see all year — runs from January through March, so you could snag a last-minute bargain. You also won't have to contend with potential itinerary changes due to hurricane season , which runs from June through October.

Weather in the Bahamas is generally mild, with temperatures ranging from the high 70s to low 90s Fahrenheit. As expected, the hottest months are found in summer, with lower temperatures during winter.

Best Bahamas itineraries

cruise carnival to jamaica

Islands in the Bahamas are featured on lots of itineraries, ranging from short, Bahamas-specific sailings to longer Eastern and Western Caribbean voyages.

Bahamas-only cruises tend to be anywhere from two to five nights, and they visit a port or two in the Bahamas, as well as a private island (see below).

Eastern and Western Caribbean sailings usually start at five nights and can run up to two weeks in length, but most usually last about a week.

On those voyages, you're likely to see a mix of ports. In the Eastern Caribbean, expect to visit a combination of Puerto Rico, St. Maarten, the U.S. Virgin Islands (St. Thomas, St. John and St. Croix) and the French West Indies (Martinique, St. Barts, Guadeloupe and St. Martin). If you go the western route, Belize, Honduras and Jamaica are common stops.

Additionally, cruisers can find Bahamas stops on sailings that depart from non-Florida ports on the East Coast, such as New York and Baltimore, and even Gulf Coast departures from Galveston, Texas. They are often seven or eight days in length and include calls on Florida and the Bahamas. Some also feature southern ports like Charleston, South Carolina.

Best Bahamas cruise lines

cruise carnival to jamaica

Due to the Bahamas' popularity, the country's proximity to the East Coast and the number of ships it can accommodate at one time, most major cruise lines visit the islands there.

You'll mainly find sailings with the "Big Nine" brands — Carnival Cruise Line, Celebrity Cruises, Disney Cruise Line, Holland America, MSC Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, Royal Caribbean and Virgin Voyages.

One unique outlier is Margaritaville at Sea (formerly Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line), which operates two-night voyages back and forth between Palm Beach, Florida, and Freeport, Bahamas. The cruise line also partners with a land-based resort there, allowing passengers to extend their vacations on land in the Bahamas if they wish to do so before returning to Florida on the ship several days later.

Because of how crowded and frenetic the main Bahamian ports can be, luxury lines tend to stay away. There are a few exceptions, though, such as Lindblad Expeditions. The line operates sailings to some of the Bahamas' Out Islands, which are too tiny for larger, more mainstream vessels to reach.

Things to do in the Bahamas

cruise carnival to jamaica

As you would expect from a warm-weather destination, outdoor pursuits are the most popular. Cruise passengers can walk to the nearest beach to sunbathe, swim, snorkel or scuba dive, or book a banana boat, parasailing or party boat excursion.

For fun, affordable souvenirs, shopping abounds at local shops and in Nassau's massive straw market, found on Bay Street. Just make sure you don't buy from the first vendor you see, as many stalls offer the same wares. You might find a cheaper price if you wait or if you bargain for a better deal.

If you're more the gambling type, take a quick taxi ride to Paradise Island, which is home to the famous Atlantis resort. Venture indoors to play table games or try your luck at the slot machines in the resort's casino, or purchase a day pass to use the outdoor pools and waterslides.

For fabulous food, ask a local to point you in the direction of their favorite restaurant, and head off the beaten path to try some conch fritters (fried conch meat) and peas with rice. For dessert, don't miss the semi-sweet bread-style johnnycakes.

Best Bahamas cruise ports

cruise carnival to jamaica

The Bahamas has two main cruise ports: Nassau on New Providence Island and Freeport on Grand Bahama Island. Nassau offers plenty to see and do within a short walking distance from the port. However, Freeport requires passengers to book a shore excursion or take a taxi to most attractions.

Other Bahamas stops include Bimini, which is less frequented, and cruise line private islands that can only be accessed via cruise ship.

Historic Nassau, the capital of the Bahamas, is the cruise industry's most trafficked cruise port. It's bustling and busy, and it can feel overwhelming to travelers on their first visit, especially when there are several ships docked at the same time.

But brightly colored buildings, expansive beaches and ample opportunities for shopping and dining quickly make up for the chaos.

Nassau is also a port teeming with culture. Formerly a haven for pirates, the city is now a history buff's dream, offering easy access to monuments and buildings that were once the stomping grounds of swashbuckling scallywags.

Freeport has a more relaxed vibe than Nassau. The slower pace of Grand Bahama Island, where Freeport is located, lends itself to lazy beach days and casual strolls through town for passengers in search of the perfect souvenir.

Water sports abound, and the clear, bright-blue water is exactly what you'd expect from an island paradise.

Unfortunately, Freeport has been hit by several tropical storms and major hurricanes over the years. Although it's a lovely port to visit, you can expect to see reminders, even years later, as construction projects are abandoned and the island struggles to rebuild.

Related: The 10 biggest mistakes cruise ship passengers make on port days

The island chain of Bimini, which is part of the Bahamas, is also home to a cruise port. Fewer ships call there than call at Nassau or Freeport. Apart from beaches and resort-style experiences, there isn't much to do.

The port was thrust into the spotlight when Virgin Voyages developed its Bimini Beach Club on part of a property operated by Resorts World. When Virgin ships are in port, the only people who have access to the Beach Club are Virgin passengers. Cruisers who call on Bimini with other lines can purchase day passes as long as a Virgin ship is not docked that day.

Private islands

cruise carnival to jamaica

Most of the cruise industry's private islands are located in the Bahamas. These carefully curated swaths of land can only be visited if you're sailing on a ship that has access.

When you're ashore, you can expect clean facilities, pristine beaches, shopping opportunities, free buffet lunches (usually a barbecue) and a variety of carefully controlled water-sports-centric shore excursions. Some of the larger, more developed private islands also offer water parks, horseback riding, zip lines and pools.

Private cabanas, villas and bungalows are also available, but they come at a premium and usually book up quickly. Some are even reserved for cruisers booked in suite accommodations on their ships.

When to book a Bahamas cruise

cruise carnival to jamaica

Since the Bahamas is a year-round destination and lots of ships call there, supply is plentiful. That means prices tend to be more affordable, particularly for shorter Bahamas-only voyages.

For additional savings , consider booking your sailing in the first quarter of each year during wave season, when cruise lines offer fare discounts and other added-value perks like free Wi-Fi and beverage packages, discounted airfare or onboard credit for extras like spa treatments, shore excursions or dining in restaurants that charge fees for meals. Also keep an eye out for Black Friday deals toward the end of each year.

You might also be able to take advantage of resident rates if you live in Florida, military discounts or " kids sail free " promotions.

What to bring on a Bahamas cruise

Wondering what to pack ? For any cruise, you can't go wrong with resort-casual clothing and something for formal night if you'd like to participate. You'll also need underwear, toiletries, pajamas and footwear, as well as any travel documents required to board and clear immigration and customs.

For the Bahamas specifically, you'll want to prepare for warm, sunny weather by bringing a bathing suit and cover-up; flip-flops or sandals; and sunglasses, a hat and sunscreen to protect yourself during time outdoors. For those not heading to the beach, sundresses or shorts with T-shirts or tank tops are suitable attire.

If you plan to shop while ashore, most places do accept credit cards, but you might want to bring cash. Dollars are accepted in the Bahamas, so there's no need to exchange currency.

Bottom line

cruise carnival to jamaica

If you cruise, it's almost certain you'll visit the Bahamas at some point in your travels. Although it can be crowded, the experience is an enjoyable one.

If you're looking for a fun warm-weather destination that offers plenty of beach time, active diversions, history and culture, shopping, gambling and excellent food, you won't be disappointed with a trip to this popular cruise region.

What cruise lines sail to Jamaica?

Several cruise lines sail to Jamaica with most itineraries departing from the United States. Royal Caribbean sails to Jamaica from Tampa, Florida. Celebrity cruises to both Ocho Rios and another Jamaican port, Falmouth. Carnival has several itineraries that stop in Jamaica, including a few that sail the Panama Canal. Carnival Cruise Line and Princess Cruises sail to both Montego Bay, located on the northern side of the island, and Ocho Rios. MSC, Norwegian , and Holland America also include Jamaica on their cruise itineraries.

MSC alone offers more than 50 cruises that stop in Jamaica.

Jamaica cruise itineraries often depart from Texas or Florida and include other Caribbean islands. Some include more adventures, sailing to Central America or through the Panama Canal.

What cruise ships sail to Jamaica?

Cruises to Jamaica tend to be longer, with many itineraries falling into the five- to seven-night range, so you’ll need more than a long weekend for this vacation. Ships sailing here tend to be larger and stacked with onboard entertainment and activities. Most ships sailing to Jamaica, like Royal Caribbean’s Grandeur of the Seas , the Norwegian Escape , and the MSC Meraviglia , carry thousands of passengers, but Viking Cruises and Oceania Cruises sail to Jamaica on ships that carry 1,200 passengers or less.

Whatever kind of cruise experience you’re looking for, you can find it on a ship headed toward the sandy beaches and reggae beats of Jamaica. These are some of the best Jamaica cruises for every kind of traveler.

Which Jamaica cruise port is better?

Ocho Rios on Jamaica’s northern coast is the island's largest and best-located cruise port. It offers easy access to two of Jamaica’s top attractions—Dunn’s River Falls and Mystic Mountain, where you’ll find bobsledding and zip-lining—and several of Jamaica’s most popular activities. In Ocho Rios, you can ride horses on the beach, take a tour to learn about Bob Marley and the roots of reggae music, or relax on sandy beaches. The port is a quick walk from town, making it easy to explore on your own if you choose not to take an excursion.

What is the best month to cruise to Jamaica?

There’s no place like Jamaica to escape winter. Jamaica’s dry season stretches from mid-December through April and brings sunny days with pleasant temperatures. Cruise to Jamaica between mid-December and April for perfect beach days and good weather for exploring rainforests and local markets. Avoid cruising the Caribbean in August and September, which is peak hurricane season.

Back on board the Nieuw Statendam , enjoy having one of the ship’s 12 oceanview solo staterooms all to yourself. These solo staterooms are small —between 127 and 172 square feet— but with so much to do onboard that might not matter. The Nieuw Statendam is a Pinnacle Class ship with several live entertainment venues, an expansive fitness center, shopping, and a spa. There are multiple dining options on board, and the cruise line hosts several events for solo travelers each sailing. The Nieuw Statendam ’s Western Caribbean itinerary departs from Fort Lauderdale, Florida , and also stops in Cozumel, the Cayman Islands, and the Bahamas.

The  11-night itinerary visits the Bahamas, Aruba, Curaçao, Dominican Republic, and Ocho Rios, Jamaica. In Ocho Rios, guests can choose from several excursions including a traditional bamboo rafting tour. Adults may prefer the island tour and rum-tasting excursion. That excursion dives into the history of the island, taking travelers to historical sights as well as scenic spots. Guests learn about rum production on the island while sampling locally made rums. Juice tastings are available for any kids who may want to join this experience.

8 New International Flights Launching From the US This Fall

But there’s so much to do on the Meraviglia , it may be tough to get your kids off the ship. The ship is home to a full-size bowling alley, F1 simulators, an epic waterpark with twisty slides and a sports field. There’s also a kid’s club, several shows to choose from, and an expansive pool.

For a relaxing Jamaican cruise, jump on board the brand new Celebrity Beyond , which sails a nine-night Caribbean itinerary round trip from Fort Lauderdale. The Celebrity Beyond is the cruise line’s newest ship. It boasts 32 restaurants, bars, and lounges and has a spa that offers a selection of more than 120 treatments. The cruise makes its first stop in Grand Cayman before stopping in Aruba and Curacao. Its last stop is Falmouth, Jamaica, a town with cobblestone streets lined with Georgian architecture that sits between Ocho Rios and Montego Bay. From Falmouth, cruise passengers can opt to ride a bamboo raft along the Martha Brae River, climb to the top of Dunn’s River Falls, or lounge on the beach. This is an area of Jamaica known for its long emerald rivers, caves, waterfalls, and beaches, there may be no better place to relax in Jamaica.

For a longer cruise, consider the  Celebrity Beyond ’s 11-night Southern Caribbean itinerary which adds a stop in Cartagena, Colombia.

Best cruise to Jamaica for partying

If you’re looking to party on your Jamaican cruise , look no further than Carnival Cruise Line. Carnival is the cruise line for travelers looking to let loose on vacation and is known for its fun onboard atmosphere. Carnival sails to Ocho Rios and Montego Bay from Florida.

The  Carnival Sunrise sails roundtrip from Miami to Ocho Rios, Jamaica's most popular cruise port. This five-night itinerary starts with a day at sea—the perfect way to ease yourself into vacation mode, especially if you spent the night before sailing sampling Miami’s epic nightlife. The ship’s first port is Ocho Rios, where travelers can climb the 600-foot Dunn’s River Falls, drive a dune buggy through Jamaican woodlands, swim with dolphins, ride horses on the beach or try out river tubing. The ship stops in Grand Cayman before making its way back to Miami.

Onboard, spend your sea days sipping cocktails by the pool. Spend your evenings at the Red Frog Pub, the onboard piano bar, or laughing your heart out at the ship’s comedy club.

Best megaship cruise to Jamaica

To cruise to Jamaica with everything you could ever want on board, book yourself on the Norwegian Escape , a ship built in 2015 that can accommodate more than 4,200 passengers. This is a ship with dining options to suit even the pickiest palates. There’s even an American Diner on board should you get a little homesick.

The Escape cruises to Jamaica on a  seven-day itinerary that includes stops in Cozumel, Mexico, George Town, Grand Cayman, and Great Stirrup Cay, Bahamas, in addition to Ocho Rios, where it spends a full day in port. Excursion options in Ocho Rios include a 4x4 safari to Dunn’s River Falls, island sightseeing and beach breaks.

The itinerary includes two sea days, offering plenty of time for lounging by the pool or relaxing by the spa. Or try your hand at the ship’s ropes course and catch a show at the onboard comedy club.

Best smaller ship Jamaica cruise

If you’re looking for a luxury cruise experience and a trip of a lifetime that stops in Jamaica, Viking has you covered with its  15-day Panama Canal and Central America itinerary on board the Viking Star. The Viking Star is smaller than most of the cruise ships that call on Jamaica. It accommodates just 930 guests, ensuring top-notch service for everyone on board.

Being a smaller ship, you won't find the same breadth of dining and entertainment offerings on board the Viking Star as you may on other cruise lines calling on Jamaica, but you're guaranteed not to get hungry or get bored on this luxury vessel. The Viking Star has two pools, a spa, and a fitness center. It also has a sports deck, piano lounge, and a handful of dining venues. This is a cruise line that focuses on enrichment, so expect lots of opportunities to learn about your destinations along the way.

Viking’s Panama Canal and Central America journey begins and ends in Fort Lauderdale. It takes passengers on a once-in-a-lifetime journey to Cozumel, Mexico; Belize City, Belize; Roatan, Honduras; and Puerto Limon, Costa Rica, before sailing through a portion of the Panama Canal. Its last stop before returning to Fort Lauderdale is Montego Bay.

Best long cruise to Jamaica

Oceania's  27-day Rome to Miami Grand Caribbean Crossing may be the most exciting way to make your way to Jamaica. This epic journey begins in Rome and spends a day sailing the Mediterranean Sea before sailing to Valencia and Santa Cruz de Tenerife in Spain. From Spain, the Oceania Vista crosses the Atlantic Ocean for just over two weeks of hopping around some of the Caribbean's top destinations. The cruise stops in Antigua, Puerto Rico, and Cozumel, before eventually making its way to Montego Bay.

This itinerary does include several sea days, but with cabins that feel more like a home than a room on a ship, lots of great food, and a selection of cocktail experiences, you may not mind. The luxurious ship also offers cooking classes, shows, a spa, and lots of gorgeous photo spots.

WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO Jamaica Cruises Insider

The island has fairly good weather all year long, but it's good to know that the rainy season comes in May and then again from October to November. Jamaica also has a hurricane season that lasts from June 1 to November 30. November and December is a great time to visit: The likelihood of storms is low, and the weather is still warm while it's colder in more northerly climates.

Licensed local taxis are known as "contract carriages" and always display a red license plate. They operate under fixed rates and these can be seen inside the cabs. If you want to save money, opt for route taxis, a service that runs like buses and picks up others along the way. These also have red license plates.

Authentic Jerk Chicken from Jamaica

The Right Kind of Jerk

Jerk chicken is the fragrant, smoky and spicy dish that's arguably Jamaica's culinary claim to fame. This spicy barbecued chicken gets its red-hot flavors from a special rub, usually including Scotch bonnet peppers and sweeter spices like allspice and nutmeg.

Traditional Dish Ackee and Saltfish from Jamaica

AN UNLIKELY PEAR

You might not think of fruit and fish together, but Jamaican cooks have turned this unlikely pairing into a distinctive dish. Ackee and codfish incorporates the fleshy, yellow seeds of the tropical, pear-shaped ackee fruit with salted cod. The result is a light but filling protein-packed dish that's typically served over rice for dinner or with dumplings for breakfast.

Typical Breakfast Fried Bammy Plantains Ackee and Saltfish from Jamaica

Double Bammy

The history of bammy goes way, way back. Originally eaten by Jamaica's indigenous inhabitants, this flatbread is made from the starchy root vegetable cassava. It's then soaked in coconut milk and then fried to perfection. Enjoy them on their own in for breakfast or alongside fish or jerk chicken at lunch or dinner.

How I Planned My Jamaica Carnival Trip — and What You Need to Know About the Caribbean Celebration

Learn more about how to plan a carnival trip that's both educational and respectful.

Harvey Leon

On a random Sunday morning in Jamaica last month, I was contemplating the virtues of a nearby mimosa wall when two men approached me with a microphone and camera to ask about something far more important: What makes Carnival so special?

For someone whose job is to put words together, it took me an embarrassingly long time to answer — a delay I’ll blame on either the merciless overhead sun or on the aforementioned mimosa wall depending on who’s asking. But even under perfect conditions, it’s hard to convey just how euphoric — how freeing — the experience can be.

Like many cultural traditions across the African diaspora, much of the revelry that constitutes modern Caribbean carnivals largely emerged during, and in direct resistance to, enslavement.

In Trinidad and Tobago, the festival’s epicenter, Carnival rites trace their roots to the 18th century, when enslaved people intentionally set fire to sugarcane that European colonizers intended to sell. Destroying the commodity produced by their own forced labor was a powerful rebuke. The practice, which became known as Canboulay — the word stems from cannes brûlées , French for burnt cane — stood in stark contrast to masquerade balls held by plantation owners before the start of Lent, which neither enslaved nor freed Black people were permitted to attend. Canboulay was a rebellion worthy of celebration.

The percussive music and electric energy that characterized Canboulay’s earliest iterations still pulse through what’s now Carnival, nearly two centuries after Trinidad’s emancipation. The traditions have spread, too: in the 1950s, students at the University of the West Indies in Jamaica organized celebrations inspired by Trinidad’s, an annual event still referred to as “UWI Carnival.”

Courtesy of GenXS Jamaica

But the inaugural staging of an official Jamaica Carnival was just over three decades ago, in 1990. The late Jamaican musician Byron Lee, bassist and bandleader of The Dragonaires, traveled to Trinidad for Carnival in 1974, a trip that deepened Lee’s love of the sister island’s music. The Dragonaires would go on to perform in Trinidad during Carnival season for more than a decade before Lee, along with the famed Trinidadian bandleader Stephen Derek , brought a Trini-style Carnival to Jamaica.

Though it did face some opposition within the country, Jamaica Carnival drew massive crowds, who danced and celebrated as soca and calypso (the sounds of Trinidad) played throughout the streets of Kingston. Less than a decade into Carnival on his own island, Lee attributed its success in Jamaica to the power of soca.

“Reggae is an implosion, soca is explosion,” he told Caribbean Beat magazine in 1998. “Soca music takes all your pains out of you.”

It was hard not to think about Lee’s enthusiasm for soca the entire time I was in Jamaica last month for Carnival. Everywhere I looked, people seemed to be letting go of everything from their mundane everyday worries to the distinct sadness of missing Carnival during the height of the pandemic.

It’s been six years since I’ve experienced Carnival in Trinidad, a flurry of activity and soca-inflected joy that remains among my most treasured memories. Planning out my Carnival trip this time, I was excited to play mas on different ground, and to hear soca blaring through the air in Jamaica.

How I Planned My Jamaica Carnival

To experience the full range of Carnival activities, you’ll generally need to pick a band well ahead of time. Bands provide everything from food and drink during festivities to the glorious costumes Carnival is famous for.

Your band will be your home base, whether you’re dancing in the light of the sun or gathering in the dead of night for J’Ouvert, the ecstatic pre-sunrise ritual that symbolizes enslaved people’s perilous journey to freedom. My partner and I joined GenXS Jamaica , but revelers could also choose from Bacchanal Jamaica , Ocho Rios Carnival , Yard Mas , or Xodus .

We stayed at the ROK Hotel Kingston , a beautifully appointed modern hotel right in Kingston’s downtown art district. (The acronym in the property’s name stands for the “Revival/Rebirth/Renaissance of Kingston.”)

The hotel offers an extensive breakfast buffet, as well as dishes made to order. For lunch, dinner, and snacks throughout the day, there are two on-site restaurants where we had our fair share of perfectly crisped wings with jerk aioli and red stripe with fresh lime juice while recharging on the pool-side cabanas. Across the street, Kingston’s waterfront and harbor also boast a handful of restaurants, including a small pizza shop and ice cream parlor that have some more affordable (but no less delicious) offerings.

Photo Fusion Media/Courtesy of ROK Hotel Kingston, Tapestry Collection by Hilton

Not everyone wants to — or can — play mas. If marching in the sun for hours isn’t your speed no matter how much soca or rum punch is fueling you, there are still plenty of events to check out during the season.

This year, we thoroughly enjoyed concerts at Kingston’s Sabina Park stadium. True to the spirit of Carnival, soca and calypso reigned supreme: legendary Trinidadian artists such as Kes the Band, Bunji Garlin, Nailah Blackman, and Machel Montano all performed to crowds of adoring fans from all over the Caribbean (and the world), constantly emphasizing connections across the African diaspora and the beauty of celebrating this moment together. Want a taste from afar? This playlist will keep you moving all day. No matter how hype the road is, no trip to Jamaica is complete without plenty of time by the water. So a few days before we paraded through the streets of Kingston, we took our energy to the sea — on a sunset beach fete and catamaran cruise by SunKissed Events that also happened to include drinks, food, and a whole lot of good vibes. If you’ve never danced to soca on a boat with a fried plantain in your hand, you’re not living right.

2023 Carnivals

Jamaica Carnival is over for the year, but it’s not too early to start prepping for 2024 if you’re dead set on making it to Kingston or to Port of Spain for Trinidad Carnival, which is even earlier, in February. You can always follow your preferred bands on Instagram to keep up to date on the sign-up windows for next year — and to see the reveal of new costumes.

Concierge services like Carnival Hunters or Ultimate Trinidad Carnival can take even more of the work out of planning your experience by arranging your travel, makeup, and more.

And, thankfully, the Carnival season is still going strong throughout the rest of the Caribbean. If you want to make it out this year, you’ve still got lots of options.

Next up is Bermuda, which will have its Carnival next month, from June 16 - 19 . If you want to play mas, you still have time to connect with one of the country’s three bands this year: Party People , Nova Mas , and Code Red . (If you’re more interested in the vibes than the full Carnival shebang, we’ve got you covered — here’s T+L’s guide to Bermuda , which is just a short flight away from much of the East Coast.)

“Vincymas,” St. Vincent and the Grenadines’ Carnival, packs a whole lot of punch on the small islands. Running from June 30 - July 11 this year, Vincymas promises to be a deliciously musical good time. For a rundown of the bands you can march with, visit vincymas.vc . We’re big fans of the relatively secluded hotels on the country’s smaller islands , but for Vincymas, you’ll want to stay on the mainland. The Blue Lagoon Hotel & Marina is a great, affordable option — but book fast, as it’s likely to sell out soon. And also in July, St. Lucia Carnival runs all the way from the beginning of the month through the 19th. Check out the many bands you can choose from at carnivalsaintllucia.com , and if you’ve got some time to travel around the lush mountainous country, be sure to take a reprieve from the chaos of Carnival by staying at the luxurious cliffside Ti Kaye Resort & Spa . From July 27 - Aug. 8 , Antigua celebrates its annual Carnival. Antigua’s one of my favorite islands, and its Carnival history is rich. This year’s mas bands can be found at antiguacarnival.com . But even if you’re not looking to partake officially, it’s absolutely worth being in town to hear Antigua and Barbuda’s legendary steel bands. Hodges Bay Resort & Spa on Antigua’s north coast is one of the island’s newest and most impressive hotels. In August, kick things up a notch in Grenada, where “Spicemas” runs from the start of the month through the 15th. In Grenada, you can look forward to an extra high-octane J’Ouvert experience that explicitly emphasizes the tradition’s roots as a rebuke of former colonizers — you’ll see people drenched in black oil with devil horns well before you see the sun. Find info on “Fancy Mas” bands at spicemasgrenada.com if you’re more into feathers than pitchforks. Coyaba Beach Resort is a reasonably priced choice right on Grand Anse Beach. And, of course, what is any Carnival season guide without a nod to Barbados’s illustrious Crop Over festivities, where Rihanna has been spotted serving looks for what seems like forever. The Crop Over Festival actually runs for about three months, a celebration of Bajan music, food, and arts that culminates in a masquerade parade called Kadooment Day. Grand Kadooment Day will be August 7th this year, so you’ll want to be around for at least a week prior. Mas bands should be announced later this month. Bougainvillea Barbados is a lovely boutique resort on the island’s south coast.

Even if you can’t travel internationally any time soon, you’re not out of luck. The West Indian Day Parade in Brooklyn will be back again in the leadup to Labor Day, and Miami holds its own Carnival in October.

The sun may shine differently, but the soca will hit all the same.
