Andaman Itinerary For 6 Days

  • April 24, 2022

The far-flung archipelago of Andaman & Nicobar Islands consists of 572 islands, out of which only 37 are inhabited. The islands of Nicobar are off-limits to tourists, and we can only visit a few islands in Andaman. Located in the Bay of Bengal off the eastern coast of India , the Andaman Islands are a sight to behold. Sun-kissed beaches, azure waters, exhilarating water activities, intriguing history, and abundant natural beauty are just a few of the reasons to visit this tropical paradise. Additional attractions include spectacular sunsets, limestone caves, mangrove rainforests, and abundant marine life. In fact, it is an excellent destination for scuba divers and snorkelers as it is home to a plethora of vibrant coral and exotic marine life. This itinerary will take you through the most inhabited and exciting areas of the Andaman Islands.

Suggested Andaman Itinerary for 6 Days

Day 1 of andaman itinerary: port blair.

The only way to get to the remote islands is to fly into Port Blair. Direct flights are available from Delhi , Kolkata, Mumbai , and Chennai to Veer Sarvankar International Airport in Port Blair. Check the flights and connectivity before planning your vacation, as the timetable changes randomly. In Port Blair, there isn’t much to do. However, Cellular jail should be on your agenda. The Cellular Jail, also known as Kala Pani, was a colonial prison that housed several prominent Indian freedom fighters. The horrifying stories of brutality and depravity are sure to have a sobering effect. There is also a light and sound show in the evening (6 pm-7 pm). If you have time left, you can go to the coconut palm-fringed Corbyn Beach and watch a scenic sunset. Enjoy a leisurely meal and spend the night in Port Blair.

Day 2 of Andaman Itinerary: Havelock and Radhanagar Beach

To get to Havelock (Swaraj Deep Island), you can use a seaplane, a government-operated ferry, or a private ferry. Choose Markuzz Ferries for your ferry transfer since they are spacious and comfortable Catamarans. They offer air conditioning, nice seats, clean restrooms, and a small snack bar. The trip will take about 1.5 hours and will cost close to Rs1400 ($20) one way. If you can’t get tickets in Markuzz, you’ll have to use Green Ocean Ferries, Aashi, Sea Link, or government-operated boats, which are cheaper but have subpar facilities and may take longer.

During this trip, we plan to spend as much time as possible on Havelock Island, which is noted for its clean beaches , lush green forests, and rich underwater treasure. Take the morning ferry (departs from Haddo Jetty) to Havelock and get off at Swaraj Deep Jetty. To get to your hotel, you’ll need to take a taxi/auto from there. Check into your hotel and spend the rest of the day at Radhanagar Beach. The secluded beach is located on the western coast of Havelock Island. The Radhanagar Beach (Beach 7) is ranked among Asia’s top ten most gorgeous beaches, and you’ll see why when you visit. The crescent-shaped beach spans 2 kilometers and has an average width of 30 to 40 meters.  Velvety sand, excellent waves, emerald waters, picturesque sunset, and scarce crowds make this beach a perfect place to relax and enjoy. There are no water sports on the beach. Taj Exotica Resort & Spa is a 1-minute walk from the famed beach. If you can afford the upscale resort, go for it.

Day 3 of Andaman Itinerary: Elephant Beach, Havelock

Today we are going to visit Elephant Beach. A small cruise boat will take you to Elephant Beach from the Swaraj Deep Jetty in less than 30 minutes. The round-trip ferry would cost Rs1000 ($14) per person. It leaves you there for three hours, and you are free to do whatever you choose during that time. The same jetty will bring you back after the allotted time.  Another way to reach Elephant Beach is by trekking. The trail begins at the Forest Camp, which is located 8 kilometers from the jetty. Because the trail runs through dense rainforests, it is recommended that you bring an escort with you on the one-hour trek. You can get a guide for 500 rupees (USD 8). The guide will accompany you to Elephant Beach, assist you while you are there, and bring you back to the Forest Camp. Keep in mind that if you go trekking, you must return the same way you came. You will not be able to go back on the ferry.

Havelock’s Elephant Beach is a great place to go snorkeling. The crystal-clear water, rich coral reef formations, and amazing marine life near the coast provide for an unforgettable snorkeling experience. You’re going to have the time of your life if you love water activities. There’s Jet skiing, banana boats, an underwater sea walk, parasailing, and a slew of other water activities. Except for snorkeling (Rs1500) and parasailing (Rs3250), most of the activities cost Rs600. Elephant Beach is quite crowded and extensively commercialized. If you are not interested in water sports, you can skip going there and spend the day at other beaches such as Beach 2, 3, and 7. The last boat leaves Elephant Beach by 3 p.m. The rest of the day is free to do whatever you choose. If you’re in the mood to venture out again, Beach 2 and 3 have some nice restaurants and beach shacks.

PS: If you want to do scuba diving in Havelock, arrange a morning excursion so you can return in time to explore Elephant Beach. Scuba diving will take around two hours to complete. The diving establishments are located at Govindnagar Beach No. 2, which is quite close to the Jetty. Remember that the last ferry to Elephant Beach departs from the jetty at noon and make your plans accordingly. You’ll have a long day ahead of you, but scuba diving in Havelock is highly recommended.

Day 4 of Andaman Itinerary:  Neil Island

Today we are going to leave for Neil Island (Shaheed Dweep). The Markuzz ferry from Havelock Jetty to Neil Island Jetty leaves at 10 a.m. and takes one hour. Neil Island is smaller than Havelock and has laid-back vibes. The island was inhabited only in the 1960s and has been slowly rising on the popularity charts due to its unexplored coral reefs, picturesque beaches, amazing biodiversity, and lush forests. There are three main beaches in Neil Islands – Sitapur Beach, Bharatpur Beach, and Laxmanpur Beach. Nestled between tropical forests and clear turquoise seas, the beaches look spectacular. Each one of them has its charm.

The sea around Bharatpur Beach is full of corals and schools of fish. It is the only place in the Neil Islands where you can enjoy water sports. However, snorkeling and scuba diving can be enjoyed on all three beaches. Sitapur Beach is also called “Sunrise Beach” as it offers spectacular sunrise views in the morning. The beach is known for its limestone formations. Laxmanpur Beach is a broad spur of white shell sand and you can find an abundance of corals and shells in the shallow, clear waters. The Natural Bridge, also called Howrah Bridge by the locals, is the highlight of Laxmanpur Beach. The bridge is made of natural rock formations. Most of the resorts on Neil Island are located on Bharatpur Beach. Stay overnight on Neil Island.

PS: You can go to Kalapathar Beach early in the morning before leaving for Neil Island to see a breathtaking sunrise. The beach is located on the southern side of Havelock and is approximately 6.5 kilometers from the jetty. It is easily accessible by car, taxi, or bike.

Day 5 of Andaman Itinerary: Port Blair and Ross Island

It is now time to return to Port Blair. The Markuzz Ferry, which runs from Neil to Port Blair, departs at 11:30 a.m. and takes one hour. On reaching Port Blair, we are going to visit Ross Island. The tiny island is only a kilometer from Port Blair and is easily accessible through a 15-minute boat ride from the Aberdeen jetty. The island closes at 3 p.m. for day visitors, so plan. You can still visit the island if you don’t get there in time for the last boat. Ferries depart at 4 p.m. for the light and sound display, which begins at 5:30 p.m. Tickets must be purchased three days in advance. Ross Island is closed on Wednesdays.

For nearly a century, Ross Island served as the administrative headquarters for the Indian Penal Settlement. It had all the modern comforts procured by the Britishers until an earthquake struck the island in 1942. The ruins of a church, a bakery, a museum, a jail, a cemetery, and several other structures are scattered all over the island. Ross Island (recently named Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Island) exudes a rustic and one-of-a-kind charm.  What impresses you the most is the myriad flora and fauna that can be found on the serene island. It is home to deer, peacocks, and a variety of other birds. The trees have reclaimed the island and wrapped their roots around the crumbling ruins, creating an eerie and intriguing sight. There are no cars allowed on the island, but you can explore the island in a golf cart if you don’t want to walk. Return to Port Blair for dinner and a night’s stay.

Day 6 of Andaman Itinerary: Fly Back

The flight to your next destination would most likely depart in the morning. Pack your belongings and head to the airport. It’s time to say goodbye to the Andamans.

PS: If you have an extra day, you can plan a visit to Baratang Island. However, be prepared for a long and exhausting day. I felt that it was not worth going to Baratang Island.

Things to know before visiting Andamans

  • The best time to visit Andamans is between November and March. The months of April and May can be quite warm, particularly in the afternoons. The weather begins to heat up and become humid in the following months. Monsoon is from June to September , so avoiding that season is better. March to June – 22°C to 33°C, June to September – 27°C to 30°C, October to Feb – 20°C to 30°C
  • Although the islands are in the same time zone as Bangkok, they follow Indian Standard Time. As a result, the day begins very early. Go to bed on time so that you can wake up early to make the most of the light.
  • Ferries must be reserved in advance because they are the sole way to travel between islands. All your carefully laid-out plans will go haywire if you can’t find a suitable ferry.
  • Only private ferries can be booked online and in advance. Government ferry tickets can only be purchased at the counter two days before the trip.
  • Boarding closes approximately 20 minutes before departure. Before that, you have to get your luggage scanned and your tickets verified.
  • Bring sunscreen, sunglasses, caps, an umbrella, flip-flops, a swimsuit, cover-ups, and mosquito repellent with you.
  • The locals are straightforward, honest, and trustworthy.

Andaman Itinerary

  • Getting vegetarian food is not a problem in Andamans.
  • The mobile network is extremely patchy, with no connectivity on smaller islands. For a stable connection, you need to rely on the hotel’s WIFI. The WIFI is sometimes only accessible in the hotel’s lobby.
  • Big hotels accept cards, but you’ll need cash for cabs, small eateries, tickets, and a variety of other small transactions. Payments with Digital Wallets are also accepted in many places.
  • Although there is no Uber or Ola in the Andamans, taxis are easily available. They usually have a set fare for each route and don’t bargain much. You will be offered package deals by most of the taxi drivers you come across.
  • Auto rickshaws are easily accessible on all Andaman Islands. Because the distances are short, it makes sense to choose this less expensive method of transportation.
  • Most beaches close at 5 p.m., and this is strictly enforced by the lifeguards patrolling the beaches.
  • If you are daring enough to kayak through the mangroves at night in Havelock, you will be able to view the bioluminescent plankton that makes the water shimmer every time the paddle dips in the water. The waters are said to be home to a few crocodiles, so go at your own risk.
  • Foreign visitors to the Andaman Islands are no longer required to get a “Restricted Area Permit” as of July 2018. Foreign visitors with a valid Indian tourist visa can now visit the Andaman Islands and stay for the duration of their visa.
  • Onge, Jarawa, Sentinelese, and Andamanese are the four tribes that live on Andaman. They can be fiercely hostile. Do not make interaction with tribals. It is strictly prohibited by the Indian government and is a punishable offense. This is the most effective way to cut off them from the modern world and allow them to carry on with their age-old traditions.

A first-timer’s guide to India’s Andaman Islands

andaman travel quotes

Glittering salt-white beaches washed by teal shallows, swirls of ancient, often-impassable jungle, hot-pink sunrises over spindly coconut palms – the Andaman Islands , scattered like pearls in the twinkling Andaman Sea, remain a tantalising mystery to most travellers.

Two men paddle in the shallows of an otherwise empty beach on Havelock Island, which is part of the Andaman Islands archipelago. The white-sand beach is backed by forest.

Remote and still a challenge to reach, the dreamy Andamans lie geographically closer to Myanmar and Indonesia than the rest of India (1370km to the west), and are populated by both South and Southeast Asian settlers, and (sadly threatened) indigenous tribal communities. Together with the off-limits Nicobar Islands (south of the Andamans), the archipelago comprises 572 islands, with just a handful accessible to visitors. Those that do make the long journey here will find an alluring laid-back vibe, a compendium of India’s best beaches and some of the finest diving and surfing in Asia.

Considering a visit? Covering everything from how to get there to where to stay, here’s our guide to visiting the Andaman Islands for the first time.

A group of Indian children playing in the shallow turquoise waters near the Havelock Island jetty.

How to get to the Andaman Islands

There are no international flights to the Andamans, so you’re looking at a domestic flight into Port Blair from mainland-India cities such as Chennai , Hyderabad , Mumbai , Delhi or Bengaluru . It's also possible to reach the islands via the original route: by sea. A few ferries rattle across the Bay of Bengal to Port Blair from Chennai, Kolkata and Visakhapatnam , though timings are unreliable and distances long.

The requirement for foreigners to have a Restricted Area Permit (RAP) to visit the Andamans was overturned in 2018. Now travellers can visit 29 inhabited and 11 uninhabited islands without permits, including Havelock Island, Neil Island, Long Island, North Andaman, South Andaman, Middle Andaman and Little Andaman (though always excluding tribal areas).

Best time to visit the Andaman Islands

December to March are the top months for warm, sunny weather, good transport links and the best diving conditions, and you’re also likely to spot turtles nesting on Middle and North Andaman. The shoulder months of October, November, April and May are less reliable weather-wise, though accommodation prices drop, crowds are down and there’s consequently less strain on the natural environment.

The shell of an old Protestant church built of stone masonry, with windows made from Burma teak, that still stands on Ross Island in the Andamans. The church is missing its roof, and through the hole - and window gaps - the green jungle is visible.

An overview of each of the islands

Everyone’s first (ahem) port of call is the bustling provincial capital Port Blair , on South Andaman. While in town sorting out travel arrangements, it’s worth exploring the chilling British-built 1906 Cellular Jail National Memorial , where political prisoners were once held, and the jungle-wreathed Victorian British–style ruins on Ross Island (Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Dweep), the islands’ colonial-era administrative headquarters until 1941. But the best of this region is out in the wild: the 280 sq km Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park is a popular day trip from Port Blair (permit required).

Where to stay: Andaman Homestay , Port Vista and Lalaji Bay View are reliable budget-to-midrange picks. Towards the upper end, go for Fortune Resort Bay Island or Sinclairs Bayview , both with sea panoramas.

Havelock Island (Swaraj Dweep)

When people rave about the Andamans, they’re often talking about dazzling Havelock Island , the most developed of the islands. Silky beaches backed by thick rainforest melt into sparkling turquoise water, and the diving and snorkelling here rival the very best in South Asia. Established operators such as Dive India , Ocean Tribe and Barefoot Scuba lead you through underwater depths to spot wrecks, sharks, rays, turtles, schools of snapper and more.

Post-diving, laze away your days catching the sunrise at Kalapathar , swimming at sheltered Neil’s Cove and strolling along fabulous Radhanagar , one of Asia’s most spectacular beaches, before settling in for home-cooked Indian-international dinners, perhaps at Full Moon Café or Anju-Coco Resto . For something more active, hike into the lushly forested interior and to Elephant Beach , or join a kayaking expedition through the mangroves.

Where to stay: Eco-conscious British-run Jalakara offers boutique seclusion, a seductive infinity pool and seven uniquely designed rooms amid betel-nut trees and banana palms. Just back from Radhanagar’s sands, ecofriendly island original Barefoot at Havelock has graceful bamboo, timber and tented cottages. Budget-friendly haunts include Emerald Gecko’s beachside huts; Flying Elephant , with its bungalows overlooking electric-green rice paddies; and backpacker favourite Green Imperial . Most dive schools have simple accommodation.

A huge, admittedly slightly terrifying, spotted fish swims towards a diver off the coast of Havelock Island. In the background a reef is visible with smaller fish swimming around it.

Neil Island (Shaheed Dweep)

A few notches down in busyness from its sister Havelock just north across the water, Neil Island is a delightfully easy-going, pancake-flat world of rice fields, palm trees, rocky beaches, a small bazaar and a sleepy jetty that leaps into action when ferries arrive. Budget travellers head here for the rustic beach-hut vibe that originally lured people to Havelock (though mainstream tourism is on the rise on Neil, too). While Neil’s beaches aren’t fantastic for swimming, there’s excellent diving courtesy of pioneering schools like India Scuba Explorers and Dive India (you might even spot a dugong!).

Where to stay: Fuss-free bungalows such as Emerald Gecko , Breakwater Beach Resort and Kalapani epitomise all that’s wonderful and laid-back about Neil. Waterside SeaShell is arguably the island’s most upmarket stay.

Little Andaman

The kind of deliciously isolated place mentioned in hushed whispers among enamoured travellers, Little Andaman is the southernmost island that it's possible to visit in the Andamans. It's bordered by powder-soft, sun-dusted white beaches, tangles of mangroves and tumbling teal waves that make for some of India’s most terrific surf, especially at sweeping Butler Bay and from February to April. Around 130km south of Port Blair, Little Andaman suffered serious casualties during the 2004 tsunami, but has since bounced back and now ranks among the most enticing destinations in the Andamans. Around 25 sq km of the island is a protected, off-limits tribal reserve for the indigenous Onge people.

Where to stay: Most accommodation is of the budget beach cottage genre; try Hawva Beach Resort or Ieshika Resort, just back from Netaji Nagar beach. Many guest houses rent surfboards.

Middle & North Andaman

Few travellers tackle the long journey north from Port Blair to Middle and North Andaman, but venture here and you’ll uncover outstanding snorkelling, pristine honey-gold beaches, impenetrable primeval jungle, a world-renowned turtle-nesting site, a string of eerie limestone caves, a smattering of serene offshore islets, and much more.

Kalipur beach  (just outside the Andamans’ second-largest settlement, Diglipur, in far North Andaman) is believed to be the only place in the world where leatherback, hawksbill, olive ridley and green turtles nest on the same coastal stretch (mid-December to March or April). There is simple accommodation at Kalipur, from where hikes up the Andamans’ highest mountain, 732m-tall Saddle Peak , can also be arranged.

In the remote area around Mayabunder, on Middle Andaman, you can stay amid glinting rice fields with a local conservationist family at self-sufficient Ko Hee Homestay , heading out on wildlife-spotting treks and learning about traditional crafts. Or get away from it all with a spell on quiet, untouristed Long Island, just off Middle Andaman, where bamboo-clad Blue Planet is the only place to stay.

A view of a rock formation on the beach of Neil Island. The rock has been eroded to form a large arch, spanning a section of the rocky beach.

Getting around

Once you’ve made it to Port Blair, the only way to reach most of the other islands is by ferry. Government ferry tickets are released just three days ahead (it can be a scramble at ticket offices!); tickets aren’t available online and you’ll need to ask locally for schedules (there’s an information office at Port Blair’s Phoenix Bay Jetty). Buses trundle north from Port Blair through Middle Andaman and on to Diglipur on North Andaman – cheap, though time-consuming!

Thankfully, Havelock and Neil are also linked to Port Blair and each other by private ferries operated by Makruzz , Green Ocean , Sea Link and ITT Majestic ; these usually open for bookings (including online) at least a month ahead, making them the easiest option for travellers. On most islands, hiring your own bicycle or motorbike is the best way to explore.

Visiting the islands responsibly

The Andamans’ fragile ecosystems and small, isolated communities remain seriously at risk from tourism (and other) development. Divers and snorkellers can help by choosing environmentally responsible operators, ensuring reefs aren’t damaged (by flippers, or by touching marine life etc), while more general practices include minimising single-use plastics, clearing any rubbish encountered, not removing shells from beaches, and supporting hotels, shops and restaurants committed to a green ethos. If you’re looking to donate your time, the NGO Reef Watch Marine Conservation accepts volunteers.

Meanwhile, for both safety and dignity, the islands’ indigenous tribal communities live in regions off-limits to visitors. Heartbreakingly, many groups have become extinct in the last century, and there are serious repercussions for anyone caught trying to access these restricted areas.

It’s also worth noting there have been several fatal crocodile attacks in the Andamans in recent years: check locally as to where it’s safe to swim and keep out of the water at dawn and dusk.

Andaman Itinerary: Castaway on India’s Beautiful Andaman Islands

12 feb 2024 13 apr 2020 | dan.

In this post, we share our 10-day Andaman itinerary and highlights from one of the most offbeat destinations in India: the beautiful, far-flung tropical archipelago of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Tucked between the Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea between India and Myanmar, a cluster of little-heard-of islands makes up the remote and beautiful Andaman and Nicobar archipelago.

There are around 570 islands in this ocean-bound outpost, though less than 10 per cent of them are inhabited. Even fewer of the islands are open to tourists, and those are only in the Andaman cluster.

These far-flung stepping stones between continents have drawn people from across the region and beyond for more than 50,000 years. Today, some of the scattered islands are still home to uncontacted stone age tribes, while others blend Asian and subcontinental cultures, and some bear the traces of a more recent European colonial past.

Despite decades of outside influence, and beyond the walls of the upscale resorts, the islands that can be visited by tourists are still mostly low-key destinations, with limited tourist infrastructure.

In that regard, there’s still a sense that the Andamans are flying largely beneath the tourism radar. That said, judging by the extensive building works going on in some of the places we visited, things are changing.

For now though, if you’re looking for a little piece of rustic paradise off the beaten track, where time moves more slowly, life is simpler, the food is delicious and the sunsets sublime, then the Andamans are calling.

Sitapur Beach on Neil Island

Planning an Andaman Nicobar Trip

There’s plenty to think about when considering Andaman travel. Two key questions though are  how long you have , and  what kind of holiday  you’re after.

Despite there only being a handful of Andaman islands that can be visited by tourists, getting around and between them can be time consuming, challenging and prone to sudden change. The more time you have, the more broadly you’ll be able to travel. With less time, you’re better off focusing on one or two islands.

Our Andaman itinerary spans 10 days and three islands:  South Andaman Island  (home to the capital, Port Blair),  Havelock Island  and  Neil Island .

We should note this itinerary is based on our ideal plan rather than our actual trip: for us, sudden severe weather led to lastminute ferry cancellations which kept us in Port Blair longer than planned, and very nearly scuttled our trip to Havelock and Neil altogether.

Fingers crossed you luck out with perfect weather and smooth transport for your Andaman Nicobar trip. We recommend being as flexible as you can though, and ready to change your itinerary if you need to.

How do you get to the Andaman Islands?

To get to the Andaman Islands, most people fly into the capital, Port Blair, from the Indian mainland.

There are several flight hubs, including Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Chennai and Hyderabad. Our Delhi to Andaman flight took around five hours.

Hardier souls than us might consider reaching the islands by sea. It’s a crossing of three to four days from Chennai, Kolkata or Visakhapatnam.

Interested in other destinations in India? Check out our  Rajasthan Road Trip  post from India’s north, and our  Adventure in Kerala  post from the south.

When is the best time to visit Andaman?

The best time to visit Andaman is between October and May, over the northern winter and spring. Summer heats things up from around April.

The Monsoon season sets in between May and September. You can still visit Andaman, but it’s less than ideal as the rains are heavy and often, and the seas can be big, which in turn means unpredictable travel schedules.

That said, this is the tropics and the weather will do whatever it likes, whenever it likes. We visited in October and experienced the ragged edge of a cyclone to the north, which drenched part of our stay and forced us to be more nimble with our plans. That’s travel!

How do I get between the Andaman Islands?

Realistically, the best way to get between the Andaman islands is by passenger ferry. There are Government ferry services and private services run by ferry companies Makruzz and Green Ocean. Government services are significantly cheaper than private services, but tickets only become available a couple of days in advance and have to be purchased at the ferry ticket offices.

With limited time, we wanted to try and gain a bit of certainty by booking our tickets online ahead of time. We did so through Makruzz.

Then bad weather led to a number of ferry services, including ours, being cancelled on the day we were supposed to travel from Port Blair to Havelock. We found ourselves in a chaotic scene at the Port Blair ferry terminal as unhappy passengers from various services converged in an attempt to board later ferries.

After multiple trips between the ferry terminal and the Makruzz offices in an effort to organise passage on another boat, we finally managed to board a ferry the next day before services were cancelled again. We were incredibly lucky, but as we’d lost a day of Havelock time, and nearly weren’t able to get to Havelock at all, it was a solid reminder that it helps to have a backup plan if things don’t go as they should.

Andaman sightseeing and island travel by ferry.

Our Suggested 10-Day Andaman Itinerary

Days 1 & 2: port blair, south andaman island.

We suggest two nights in Port Blair at the start of your trip, and one more night at the end before your flight (in case there are ferry delays between the islands).

You only need a couple of days here as there are only a handful of places to visit in Port Blair. Of course, you may wish to stay longer if you’re basing yourself here for some further explorations of South Andaman.

It’s a good spot to get oriented though, and to organise onward ferry travel to and from our next islands: Havelock and Neil.

Places to visit in Port Blair

This rough and tumble port town rises and falls over hills to the waters’ edge in bright, flaking paint and rusty corrugated roofs fringed by lush green tropical vegetation.

The British Raj set up a penal colony at Port Blair in the mid-19 th  century, and the remnants of this colonial period are still starkly visible, at the grim Cellular Jail, and on nearby Ross Island, both of which are must-sees.

One of our fave ways to take in the town, while enjoying some very tasty cuisine, was from the rooftop restaurants at the Light House Residency near the Netaji Stadium, and the Hotel Lalaji Bayview. When wild weather rained all over our plans to explore further afield on South Andaman, we retreated to these spots to marvel at the storms and rework our itinerary.

Port Blair town is the starting point on an Andaman Nicobar trip.

Top Places to Visit in Port Blair

Cellular jail.

Port Blair’s Cellular Jail was the British Raj’s response to Indian rebellion against their rule. It was built to house political prisoners, ensuring the country’s most prominent activists were locked far away, out of all reach.

The original jail, built over ten years from 1896, had seven long wings radiating out from a central tower, and filled with nearly 700 individual cells where prisoners were kept in solitary confinement.

Today, three of the uninviting wings remain and the Celullar Jail is a national memorial to India’s fight for independence.

There’s a nightly sound and light show that tells the story of the jail. We’d love to be able to say whether it’s worth the ticket price but we were rained out of the experience.

Andaman Tour Itinerary: Cellular Jail in Port Blair

Ross Island

This is our favourite site in Port Blair and a must on an Andaman itinerary. A fifteen-minute ferry ride from town, Ross Island is worth at least half a day of rambling to explore and reimagine its haunting, vine-clad ruins.

Ross Island was once an administrative HQ for the British Raj in the Andamans, and a brutal penal colony for political prisoners. It was their forced labour that hacked out and built a settlement on the forested island. The island community had houses, admin buildings, even a church and a cemetery, all connected by pathways.

Ross was abandoned following an earthquake in 1941 and the arrival of the Japanese with WWII. Ever since, nature has been reclaiming her island and today, the ruins of Ross are webbed with tree-roots as the jungle swallows them whole.

Vines reclaim a building on Ross Island.

Zonal Anthropology Museum

In any other place, we would probably give this flaking, faded storehouse a wide berth.

But the collections it houses, and the stories they tell about the long history of the Andamans and its people, make the Zonal Anthropology Museum an important stop on an Andaman Nicobar trip.

The Andaman and Nicobar archipelago is still home to some of the last uncontacted stone age tribes in the world – uncontacted for their survival, but also by their choice. Visiting the islands where they live is strictly prohibited, though people have tried – even recently – to their terrible detriment.

We found just being in the vicinity of such ancient culture an intriguing aspect of our visit to the Andamans. This museum is really the best way to learn about the archipelago’s Indigenous people, as well as the more recent waves of people who have brought their cultures and traditions to the islands.

Exploring South Andaman beyond Port Blair

With more time upfront or at the end of your visit, you might consider arranging a driver or a tour to some of the other key sites in and around South Andaman. These include:

  • Red Skin Island and Jolly Buoy Island  in Mahatma Gandhi National Park, around 45 minutes southwest of Port Blair. These gorgeous tropical islands and their crystal clear waters are alternately open to day visitors for 6 months each, giving the other island time out to recuperate. Entry is by permit only.
  • Chidiya Tapu Beach  – Around half an hour south of Port Blair, this is a popular little gathering place by the water. We spent our last afternoon of Andaman sightseeing here, hoping for one of the epic sunsets the beach is renowned for. If we’re honest though, compared to other Andaman beaches, we found this one a little underwhelming. Plus there are crocodiles in the water, so swimming is off the cards. Still, it’s a nice enough spot to settle back for an hour or two of people watching with a chai.

Andaman Sightseeing: Clouds build over Chidiya Tapu

Should you visit Baratang Limestone Caves? Baratang Limestone Caves are around 110km north of Port Blair on Middle Andaman, and are touted as a popular day trip from the capital. Tour descriptions say it involves a very early start from Port Blair, a long, bumpy ride through the interior jungle of the island and a boat trip through mangroves to the caves. Baratang was originally on our Andaman itinerary before heavy rains ruled it out. On investigating further, we weren’t disappointed. The tour to Baratang involves travelling along the Andaman Trunk Road, an illegal route carved right through the middle of the tribal lands of the Jarawa people. India’s Supreme Court ordered the road closed back in 2002, to limit the increasing exposure of the Jarawa to the outside world and to minimise the risk of disease, exploitation and abuse. Unfortunately, the road remains open, and while there are efforts to minimise contact by tourists and workers passing through, there are plenty of references online to this part of the journey being like a ‘human safari.’ For the sake of the Jarawa and their health, wellbeing and dignity, we recommend skipping Baratang and any other sites requiring passage along this road, until there’s a legal, considerate alternative route available.

Days 3 – 6: Havelock Island

We spend four nights on Havelock, travelling to the island by ferry from Port Blair.

Havelock Island is the most popular tourist island in the Andamans, and while there are plenty of Havelock Island resorts, it’s still low-scale enough to feel like tourism hasn’t got a solid foothold yet. There was plenty of construction underway when we visited though, so it’s really just a matter of time before it does.

There are just two main roads on Havelock. Even so, we found it very easy to leave the busy main stretch behind and go zipping through the hinterland on hired mopeds, called ‘scooties.’

Havelock boasts some superb beaches and – along with Neil Island – serves up spectacular sunsets, some of the most impressive we’ve ever seen.

There are pretty beaches to laze on and turquoise waters to snorkel. For the adventurous, there’s the jungle trek to Elephant Beach. And for scuba junkies, it’s said there’s some of the best diving in the world. In fact, it was scuba diving that first put the Andamans on our bucket list.

There’s plenty to fill four days on Havelock, but if you’re just here to chill, choose your beach and settle in.

Here are some of the main things to do in Andaman’s Havelock Island.

Havelock’s East Coast Beaches

Havelock’s main road runs along the east coast, and there are a couple of lovely beaches backed by jungle, where early risers can greet the sunrise.

Really though, even if you like a sleep in, the pearly white sands and crystal waters of  Vijay Nagar Beach  and  Kala Pathar Beach  are perfect for sunbaking at any time of day, though swimming is best left for when the tide is in.

As we discovered, the tides go way, way out on this side of the island, leaving skies that go on for absolutely ever.

Places to visit in Andaman: Vijay Nagar Beach with the tide out.

Sunset at Radhanagar Beach

A vast swathe of white sand on Havelock’s west coast, backed by vivid green forest, Radhanagar Beach is renowned for its sunsets. And by renowned, we mean this is one secret that’s well and truly out. Radhanagar is one of the most popular places to visit in Andaman.

We made our way here one afternoon and found the beach absolutely heaving with people. Still, it’s large enough that you can wander away from the masses, who tend to crowd directly in front of the beach entrance.

A meander north brings you to pretty Neil’s Cove, while part way along the beach, a pathway into the trees pops out at the upmarket Barefoot at Havelock resort. We dropped in for a drink at the hotel bar here while we waited for the sun to drop a little lower.

Things to do in Andaman - Sunset at Radhanagar Beach on Havelock

Trek to Elephant Beach

The secret retreat of Elephant Beach is on Havelock’s northwest coast, a stunning stretch of white sand and clear water. It’s only accessible via a 2km hike along an elephant logging trail. The trackhead is signposted off Road 4, which crosses the island to Radhanagar Beach.

It isn’t a long hike to Elephant Beach, but take note of the weather before you go. We set out on the trek but were forced to turn back thanks to serious bogs created by recent rains. We persisted until we were covered in mud and couldn’t move without slipping or being sucked into quagmires. It was a laugh, but hard and messy work at the time.

If you plan to do the hike, be prepared – take a hiking pole if you can and wear shoes you don’t mind being caked in mud.

Scuba Diving Havelock Island

Word is the Andaman Islands have some of the world’s best dive sites, and it was this endorsement that first had us considering an Andaman Nicobar trip.

Diving is also offered on Neil Island, but we opted to do a couple of days’ diving from Havelock. There are around 25 dive sites scattered around the island, with macro diving a highlight.

Unfortunately for us, a trifecta of temporary restrictions on Andaman boat diving combined with churned up waters from the recent cyclone to the north and a stormy second day, meant our dives were limited to sites close to shore in less than stellar conditions.

Our dive guides were outstanding though and did their absolute utmost to give us the best experience they could.

It’s definitely worth doing a couple of dives while you’re here. If you’re a more experienced diver, we recommend contacting the dive centres ahead of time for more information about the sites and opportunities available.

We search out diving experiences wherever we can. Check out some of our other global  diving adventures here .

Andaman Itinerary: On a dive boat at Havelock Island

Days 7 – 9: Neil Island

We spend three nights on Neil Island, travelling to the island by ferry from Havelock.

Tiny, low-key Neil Island turned out to be the highlight of our Andaman itinerary. Slow-paced, rural, rustic and remote, it was here that we felt like true castaways.

We spent our days chilling on the beach, paddling and spotting iridescent manta shrimp in crystal clear waters, sampling delicious Indian curries, and cruising through the emerald green countryside on scooties.

Without fail, the end of the each day found us on the western shore with cameras and tripods. The sunsets here are without compare.

Andaman Itinerary - Sunset on Neil Island

Our Highlights on Neil Island:

Sunset point, laxmanpur beach.

This curving stretch of white sand and rocky shoreline points to the horizon on the northwestern tip of Neil. Fittingly named Sunset Point, it’s a magnet for just about every tourist on the island come the end of each day. It’s a beautiful spot at any time though, and good for swimming and snorkelling.

As the only Western tourists on the beach, we attracted plenty of attention too when we visited, and spent much of the final hour of daylight chatting with locals and taking part in selfie group shots.

Laxmanpur II Beach

Tucked around the corner from sparkling Laxmanpur Beach, the rocky shoreline of Laxmanpur II stretches away to the south, accessible only at low tide. It turned out to be our favourite spot on Neil Island.

Speckled with deep rockpools full of fascinating sea creatures, backed by green jungle, and split by a soaring natural rock arch, Laxmanpur II is much more than just a great spot to watch the sun go down.

But it goes without saying, the sunsets are truly spectacular. Just be sure to check the tides so you don’t end up stranded.

Andaman Nicobar Trip: Laxmanpur II Beach on Neil Island

Sitapur Beach

This was our local beach during our stay on Neil Island: an eye-catching bay on the east coast with interesting rock formations, turquoise water, and a lush, jungley backdrop. Huge kapok trees fringe the coast here, making for lovely forest wanders.

While it’s a great beach for whiling away the hours at any time of day, Sitapur Beach is also Neil Island’s most popular spot for watching sunrise. We made our way down here each dawn, bought a freshly brewed chai from the local pop-up chai guy, and settled in to greet the day.

Places to visit in Andaman - Forest backing Sitapur Beach on Neil Island

Exploring the countryside

While you can cover Neil Island pretty quickly by scootie or bicycle (the island is less than 14 square kilometres), getting out each day for a ride through the lovely green landscape was a highlight for us.

It also gave us a chance to search out roadside restaurants, and we ate some of our best meals in these little family-run establishments.

We also enjoyed heading into town in the evenings to visit the small but bustling market (Neil Island grows most of the region’s fruit and veg), and stop for a snack of chai and gulab jamun (Indian donuts).

Exploring by scootie is a highlight of an Andaman tour itinerary.

Day 10: Return to Port Blair

It’s good to have some extra time to get back to Port Blair, just in case there are ferry delays.

We had no problems for the return journey, and arrived back in Port Blair in the early afternoon.

So we took the opportunity to hire a car and driver for one last stint of Andaman sightseeing: a trip to Chidiya Tapu Beach in the island’s south (see our entry on this spot under Days 1 & 2 above) and a final Andaman sunset.

The next day, we farewelled this unique little Indian archipelago, and flew back to Delhi.

Thanks for sharing your trip itenery and experiences from your visit. I was looking for such relaxed yet covering variety of activities from the trip. Thanks again !

Thanks Prabha, glad you found the post helpful.

Amazing blog, Thanks for providing

Thanks so much Prapti! We hope you’ve found it useful. If you’re headed to the Andamans, have a fantastic time!

hey, a perfect itinerary that I was looking for. A relaxed and adventurous both with absorbing the local culture. I would like to know when did you visit the island?

Hi Karan, thanks for your message. We travelled to the Andamans during the month of October, and October to May is said to be the best time to visit. That said, we did still encounter some wild weather and had to be flexible with our travel plans as a result. That’s travel though – we still had a great time. Hope you get to visit! All the best!

Thank you author for your beautiful article. Keep it up.

Thanks so much, glad you liked the post.

Can you suggest some good hotels to stay in all three places – Port Blair, Havelock and Neill Island. Where did you guys stay and how was it? Thanks!

Hey Shobhit, we went pretty low-key with our stays in the Andamans. On Neil & Havelock, we stayed at the Emerald Gecko beach huts – very basic, great locations. We got around on hired scooties. In Port Blair, we found a bed and breakfast but it was out of town and with hindsight, we’d have stayed nearer to the centre. Good luck with the trip planning and happy travels! ~Dan

Hi Dan & John, Wonderfully described itinerary and your adventures in Andaman. This is exactly what I was looking for to plan my trip to the islands this December. Appreciate the small details you provided about the Limestone Caves and its legality and the diving tips on Havelock and Niel island. Looking forward to this trip!

Hi Shobhit, thanks so much for your feedback, really pleased you’ve found the post helpful! And very excited to hear you’re visiting very soon – look forward to hearing about your adventures!

You haven’t mention mud volcan,..Amrapali Beach, Ramnagar Beach Ross n Smith Iceland etc..

Hi Anand, thanks for your feedback! So much to see in the Andamans – we hope to get back one day and visit your suggestions so we ca. Write about them too!

Hi Dan & John, I really enjoyed going through this as you shared your planning and Experiences amazingly. Though I’ve been to Andaman and it is simply awesome. what I find more amazing is Andaman won’t leave you, its beauty and Serenity calls you. Just in case if you want to read my experience, you’re most welcome. Cheers

Hi Madhuri, thanks so much for your kind words, glad you enjoyed reading our post about the beautiful Andamans – it is most certainly a corner of the world that stays with you. Happy travels!

Hello, Information about all such places are available anytime on Tourism website if you google more can be found about what all you have shared but what is interesting about your Guide to these places is your first hand experience, As for any traveler or tourist First hand experience of other traveler is always more authentic then reading on Google or Govt.Tourist website,

so thanks for sharing your wonderful journey but what I wonder is what is keeping our Govt.from exploring & developing these Islands for Increasing Tourists from Around the Globe when there is such huge Potential lying there

Personally for Me -The life time Adventure would be Seeing Those Primitive People or As You Mentioned “Stone Age Clan” “The Children Of Nature” who are Luky & Save to Enjoy the Real essence of Beautiful Earth And Till Date Have Not Been Victim To Greed Of Evolution That Leaves No One Who’s not Evolved with it & more Luky are the ones who are not been Hunted by Modern Ugly Materialistic Humans”

“Looking Forward for more of your Adventures-Good Luck”

Hey there Ramman,

Thanks so much for leaving a comment. We’re really glad to hear you enjoyed reading about our experiences in the beautiful Andamans.

I guess for Government’s it’s always hard to strike the right balance between promoting tourism and the risk of overdevelopment. We loved the laid back, low-key vibe in the Andamans and feel like the balance is about right.

The closest you’ll be able to get to the indigenous peoples of surrounding islands will be the wonderful the Zonal Anthropology Museum where you can find plenty of information and exhibits about the local tribes.

The islands they live on are thankfully off-limits to tourists to protect their health, wellbeing, and culture.

All the best Dan and John

I am planning to visit Andamans later this month. This is my first time planning all by myself instead of going with a tour company. I am so confused with how many days to dedicate to a place and what all to plan and when. It is all so overwhelming. Your post is quite detailed and has given me a fair idea of how I should plan. Really appreciate you giving all the little details. 🙂

Hi Pooja, thanks so much for your kind comments, we are so pleased to hear our Andaman itinerary was useful for your planning.

We’d love to hear how your trip goes, so please feel welcome to share your own experience and any recommendations you might have here.

Regards Dan and John

I am from Andaman and Nicobar Islands. You missed some beautiful spots like rose and Smith island and there is trekking spot in Andaman. You can also visit the rangat and mayabandar island. port Blair to digilipur car trip is also awesome experience.

Hi A, thanks for sharing some other highlights of this beautiful archipelago. We hope to come back one day with more time to explore further!

When is the best time to visit and what is the approximate budget for 4 night stay?

We think the best time to visit is between October and May, and we’d be inclined to avoid the Monsoon season, which sets in between May and September.

In terms of costs, it really does depend on your preferences as you can find accommodation from budget to high end, and found other costs, such as food, scootie hire, and diving to be quite reasonable.

Cheers, and happy travels. Dan and John

A very interesting description of Andaman Islands and its beautiful beaches. Pl also mention the approximate expdr of 10 days visit to Andaman.

Hi there K, thanks for your feedback! The great thing about the Andamans is that the islands cater for travel at all budget points, so the cost of a 10-day visit really depends on personal budget and interests. Hope you get to visit!

I thought we were pretty much done with India but Andaman and Kerala are still missing. Thanks for this detailed write up. Surprised you didn’t mention any recommended accommodations. It looked surprisingly clean in you video.

Hi Ksenija, thanks so much for the feedback! We hope you get to Kerala and the Andamans one day – we reckon you and Mirek would definitely appreciate both. We are planning to add some info on where we stayed once lockdowns are over and places start opening up again. We stayed in cabins run by the same company on both Havelock and Neil and they were very rustic….so rustic in fact, we’re watching closely to see if they do reopen. We really hope so! Cheers, Dan & John

Best Travel Guide for Places to visit in Havelock Island, Andaman

Andaman & Nicobar

Havelock Island Travel Guide

Last Updated on: Jan 31, 2020

Havelock Island or Swaraj Dweep, with its stunning white beaches and sparkling teal waters is one of the most visited islands in Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Located about 39 km north east of Port Blair, Havelock Island has the well-earned reputation of being a travellers’ paradise. Havelock Island is a dream destination for all – be a luxury traveller or a budget backpacker like us. The island has some of the most beautiful beaches in Asia, some of the best diving spots of South Asia and lush green tropical forests. Do you need any other persuasion to take a visit to the beautiful Havelock Island? So here is a comprehensive Havelock Island Travel Guide that will give you an idea about the place, how to reach, where to stay and things to do in Havelock Island. This is your complete guide to Havelock Island tourism.

Radhanaghar Beach - Havelock Island

Where is Havelock Island located?

Havelock Island, recently named as Swaraj Dweep is a part of Ritchie’s Archipelago, a group of 17 islands on the east of Great Andaman. Out of the 572 islands in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, only a handful is inhabited. Located about 39 km from Port Blair, the capital city, Havelock Island can be easily reached by taking a cruise. Both private and government cruise services are available. Havelock with its picturesque beaches, rich coral reefs, mangrove forests and eclectic diving spots remain one of the most popular tourist destinations in India.

Havelock Island Jetty - Andaman

How to reach Havelock Island?

  • To reach Havelock, the first thing you have to do is to get into Port Blair. You can reach Port Blair either through the air or by ship. Considering the time it takes, flights are the best option to get into Port Blair.
  • From Port Blair, you have to take a ferry to reach Havelock Island. Private ferries are usually cleaner and faster than the government ones. You can get your ferry tickets from the Phoenix Bay Jetty . Private ferries are operated by Makruzz, Green Ocean and a few others. Makruzz is the reputed one. You can book tickets for the Makruzz online.
  • There are government-run ferries also. For the government ferries, you have to visit the Jetty 3 hours before to book tickets. We had opted for a government ferry while going to the island and taken a Makruzz cruise for the return. What we liked about the government ferry is that we could come and stand on the deck and enjoy the sea view. Also, the Captain of our ferry turned out quite friendly and chatted with us for a long time sharing his stories on sea and other.
  • You can also visit Havelock Island from Neil Island (Shaheed Dweep). Ferries are available between Neil and Havelock Islands as well.

Makruzz cruise_How to reach Havelock Island

How many days are needed for a Havelock Island Trip?

Ideally, you can cover Havelock Island (Swaraj Dweep) in 3 days and 2 nights. But we would recommend you to stay for at least 4 days to soak in the vibes of the island. We stayed at Havelock for 2 nights and desperately wished that we had another night to spend there.

The ferries from Port Blair or Neil Island usually take about half a day to reach Havelock Island. So anything lesser that 2 nights is not at all recommended.

Tree house at Radhanagar Beach - places to visit in Havelock Island - Andaman

How to move around in Havelock Island?

Just like most of the other tourist destinations of Andaman, you will get four-wheelers, autos and tuk-tuks available for hire just outside the jetty and other locations throughout Havelock. You can also take a two-wheeler on rent for exploring Havelock Island.

We had rented a scooter for 2 days of exploring Havelock Island. There are a few petrol pumps available in the island, so getting petrol is not a big issue. Renting a scooty will usually charge Rs700 per day.

How many beaches does Havelock Island have?

Havelock is known for its pristine beaches and beautiful beaches, rich coral reefs and the calm seas. There are 7 beaches identified in Havelock Island, the most popular being the Radhanagar Beach. Here the beaches are given a number.

Havelock Island Map

  • Beach No. 1 is the beach where you will arrive. It is adjacent to the jetty and so crowded. It is from here where you will get ferries for Neil Island, Port Blair and Rangat. There is a market adjacent to the beach. In front of the market, there is a counter for the ferry to trip to Elephant Island. There are also a couple of ATMs and restaurants near the market area.
  • Beach No 2 is in a secluded place. It is mainly used for the diving schools to conduct their diving courses and is used as diving sites for the resorts and the diving schools. It is on the opposite side of the Helipad road and a narrow path surrounded by coconut trees leads to the beach.
  • Beach No 3 (Govindnagar Beach), 4 & 5 (Vijaynagar beach) are known as the backpacker’s strip of the island. These beaches have shallow water and bleached coral.
  • The most famous beach of Havelock is Beach No. 7 or the Radhanagar Beach.
  • And then there is the Elephant beach that you have reach by taking a boat ride from the Jetty at Beach No. 1.

The beaches in Neil Island were named after the characters of the Hindu epic Ramayana. Here in Havelock, the beaches and villages are named after characters of the other epic Mahabharata – Radhanagar, Shyamnagar, Krishnanagar, Govindanagar.

Best Beaches of Havelock Island/ Places to visit : Havelock Island Travel Guide

Radhanagar Beach and Elephanta Beach is on the western side of the island while the Kalapathar Beach is on the southeastern side. Undoubtedly Radhanagar Beach is the star attraction of Havelock Island.

Radhanagar Beach

Radhanagar Beach - Places to visit in Havelock Island

Adjectives fall less to describe the beauty of Radhanagar Beach. With the waves falling on stretches of white sand, the place is simply breathtaking. It is a 2-kilometre long crescent-shaped beach having soft silvery sand. It had been voted as the best beach in Asia by the “Times Magazine” in 2004.

Having travelled across various beaches in India, Radhanagar Beach is a complete surprise. There is not a speck of dirt on the beach. Only clear blue waters along the white sands and the green trees adjacent to the beach, time will just pass by watching the waves. And the view of the sunset from the beach is one of the most gorgeous. Don’t believe my words; see the pictures!

Sunset at Radhanagar Beach- things to do at Havelock

There is a public bus from the Main Jetty to reach Radhanagar Beach. Or else, you can also hire an auto-rickshaw.

Water sports are not allowed at Radhanagar Beach.

The sunset from Radhanagar beach is spectacular. You must not miss it. But you will have a lot of company during the sunset. The beach remains crowded with tourists during the afternoon and evening time.

A tip: If you have time, visit Radhanagar Beach also in the morning. At that time the beach is comparatively less crowded. We had visited Radhanagar Beach in the morning and found us to be the only souls there. It was indeed a wonderful feeling then.

Vijaynagar Beach

Vijaynagar Beach - Havelock Island

Vijaynagar Beach is another beautiful beach near the Vijayanagar village on the east coast of the island and is lined by Mahua and coconut trees. You can take long walks along the beach. A number of mid-range to luxury resorts are found along with this place. The Dolphin Resort is just in front of Vijaynagar Beach.

Kalapathar Beach

Watching the sunrise at Kalapatthar Beach - Places to visit in Havelock Island - Andaman

If Radhanagar Beach is for the sunset, then Kalapathar Beach is definitely for the sunrise. It is 3 km from Vijaynagar Beach and is on the extreme end of Havelock Island. The beach owes its name to the stretches of black rock along the beach. The beach is secluded and you will find fewer people visiting the beach. If you are not a morning person who loves to watch sunrises, then you can skip visiting this beach.

The ride to Kalapathar beach is a lovely one through the Kalapathar village having paddy fields and small huts.

Elephant Beach

Elephanta Beach - Places to visit in Havelock Island

Elephant Beach is another beautiful and popular beach of Havelock Island and can be reached by cruising through the azure blue seas. Speedboats are available near from Jetty near Beach No. 1 for Elephant Island. The Elephant Beach is quite beautiful with the trees at the backdrop. There are some large broken branches from uprooted trees that make the beach a perfect place for taking some lovely photographs.

Elephant Beach is the next popular beach after Radhanagar Beach and so expect to find a lot of tourists there. It is also a famous spot for water activities. It has very beautiful coral reefs and snorkelling, scuba diving and sea walking are done here.

The beach is so named because earlier an elephant used to swim in the waters along with his mahout and entertain the tourists. Thankfully, it has stopped now. So do not expect to see any elephants on the beach. The beach has locker facilities and changing rooms too.

How to reach Elephant Beach?

As mentioned earlier, speed boats ply from the Havelock Island Jetty to the Elephant Beach. They usually offer a package that includes to and fro motorboat ride to Elephant beach and a 10-minute complimentary snorkelling session. The package costs Rs950, but it can change with the season. The boats take 20 minutes to reach Elephant Beach from Havelock Jetty. They give you around 2 – 2.5 hours to roam around the island and you have to return by the same boat. There are 2 time-slots for the boat to Elephant Island – 8 AM to 11 AM and 11 AM to 2 PM. The last boat leaves from Elephant Island at about 2-2.30PM. If you are staying back at the beach after that, then you have to trek back.

Trek route to Elephanta Beach - Havelock Island

Yes, there is a trekking route to Elephant Island as well . There is a 2 km well-marked trek route from Radhanagar village through the jungles to the Elephant Beach. If you wish to trek to the Elephant Beach, then we would advise you to start at around noon. Stay at the beach in the afternoon, enjoy the water sports or simply laze around the pristine beach. Make sure to start your trek back before 4:30 PM.

Elephant Beach is quite touristy and more people mean less cleanliness and lesser visibility of marine life. Infact, mindless commercialization of the Elephant Beach has already destroyed the coral reefs. Didn’t we mention about the elephant used to entertain the tourists? The complimentary snorkelling will take you only a few metres from the beach. If you want to get further inside the sea, then you have to pay extra. The snorkelling person and the boatmen will try to convince you to go deeper into the see. They will show you videos of corals and marine life on their mobile phones. But believe me, if you really want to see good marine life, do not opt for the underwater activity at Elephant Beach. It is better to do them at the diving centres near Beach No.2.

Places to stay in Havelock Island

Places to stay in Havelock_Andaman

Havelock Island has accommodation options suiting to different budgets. From luxury resorts to budget stays for backpackers, you will find all here.

The best places to stay for families, honeymoon couples are along the Radhanagar Beach and Vijaynagar Beach. Backpackers will find budget stays near beach No. 3 & 4. You will get rooms at Rs800 to Rs1500  here. Some budget stays are also available near Beach No.1.

If you are going for a package trip, do ask your travel agent about your staying option. A bad hotel can ruin your experience.

What to do in Havelock Island

Scuba diving at havelock island.

Scuba-Diving-Andamans

Scuba diving is one of the most popular activities in Havelock Island. The island provides diverse diving site options. The ideal season for diving is between December to May. Some of the best diving sites in Havelock Island are Seduction Point, Mac point, Minerva Ledge, Turtle bay, Pilot Reef etc. There are a few popular dive shops like Barefoot Scuba, Andaman Dive Club and a few more. We were quite happy with the diving experience of Barefoot Scuba.

Snorkelling

Beaches in Andaman

Apart from scuba diving, you can also enjoy snorkelling, sea walking and a few other water activities. Havelock is known for its beautiful coral reefs and you can see them along with the wonderful marine life by indulging in a snorkelling experience.

Is permit required for visiting Havelock Island?

No permits are required for visiting Havelock Island. In fact, foreign tourists also no longer require the Restricted Area Permit (RAP) for visiting Havelock Island. This is one of the 30 islands in Andaman and Nicobar Islands that no longer require RAP for foreign tourists. Although, foreign tourists arriving at Port Blair will have to show their passport at Immigration counters at Airport and Seaport for verification.

Beaches of Havelock Island - places to visit in Havelock Island

Some tips for a great and safe Havelock Trip

  • It is better to hire a bike or Scooty for your stay in Andaman. You can roam about at your will and explore Havelock.
  • Definitely, try Scuba Diving at Havelock. It has one of the best coral reefs. During your Andaman tour, your hotel or agent may suggest you go for scuba diving at North Bay Island. But believe me, it is much better here.
  • You can also go fishing. There is an organization that offers all kinds of fishing boats and equipment.
  • Avoid diving or swimming amongst a school of fish. This may attract predatory fishes such as sharks. If you have an open wound, please avoid swimming. Much predatory fish are attracted to blood odour.

Hope this article will help you to plan your trip to Havelock Island. It is absolutely a paradise for beach lovers. We both usually keep visiting the mountains and that can be seen from our blog posts. But Havelock Island, infact entire Andaman had stolen our heart. If you have any questions regarding this place, feel free to comment below or send us a mail. Thank you so much, Sir. Glad that you liked it.

Havelock looks amazing. Very pristine and beautiful. How do I reach there from Goa?

First of all, I absolutely love your pictures! I have heard so much about Havelock Island but I have not had the fortune to visit Andaman as yet. We have planned and cancelled it due to circumstances so many times! The beaches look gorgeous, almost out of a fairytale. Bookmarking this post for when Andaman does end up happening for me ?

  • Pranav’s Solo Trip to Andaman: A Perfect Guide For You

27 Mar 2023

A traveler’s wanderlust leads him onto a myth-busting Andaman solo trip. The 6 nights/7 days spent by Pranav island-hopping, left him mesmerized with the beauty and adventure this place has to offer. Read his take on Andaman as seen from the eyes of traveler out to prove the existence and the possibility of backpacking in an otherwise honeymoon-centric destination.

Havelock Island

Predominantly, the Islands have been considered a top notch destination for a honeymoon or a family visit.I wanted to challenge this fact for myself and for other travelers who’ve refrained from venturing to Andamans on their own. I wanted to experience the beauty and the serenity of Andamans and I didn’t want to wait till I get married or grow old.

Tips for Travelers

My experiences in Andaman are sure to help the travelers visiting Andaman for the first time. Although I have visited alone, the families can equally enjoy this place which has a lot to explore. Here goes my Andaman bagpacking experience with all the locations I covered.

Memorable Port Blair

Courtyard of Kala Pani

The capital of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Port Blair is nestled on the eastern side of the South Andaman Island. Port Blair often comes up to a pit stop for travelers going to see other scenic and less inhabited islands.

Time required: 1 day

Generally, Port Blair is a stopover or a changing point for most of the tourists coming to visit the Andaman Islands. However, a full day city tour should be sufficient to cover the important spots in the city.

Budget Accommodation: INR 700 to 2100/night

With plenty of options available in budget accommodation, despite the absence of hostels, a lot of locals have built multiple floors in their houses and rented them out as rooms. This can easily manage your Andaman trip cost especially if you are travelling solo.

Places to Eat in Port Blair:

Although there are a number of small restaurants where local seafood and South Indian cuisine is best served, still there are some of the renowned restaurants that should be on your list.

  • Icy Spicy – This is one is for all those looking for vegetarian restaurants in Andaman. I had some real nice North Indian food. They serve Chinese and Italian cuisines as well. It is located in Junglighat and a meal for two will cost around 300INR.
  • Annapurna – This one is another options for vegetarians in Andaman. They serve authentic South Indian and delicious North Indian food. This may cost a little higher for you but the taste absolutely worth it.
  • Ananda – Anyone who loves seafood like me, will certainly like this place. They serve local cuisine which I loved. Crab curry is a must try.

Places to Visit in Port Blair :

Port Blair was the first destination I visited and TravelTriangle made a perfect itinerary for me. It was a fun-filled day with amazing sightseeing plans.

Light and Sound Show at Cellular Jail (Kala Pani)

Entrance to Cellular Jail

Cellular Jail , also known as Kala Paani, was a colonial prison now turned into a monument built in the British Rule of India to detain and exile dangerous and politically influential prisoners.

Cellular Jail at night

The beautifully choreographed light and sound show illustrate the struggles of the freedom fighters during the tough and testing times for our independence. Getting to hear about the stories of the sacrifices made by the martyrs for the country’s freedom was a truly humbling experience for me and should be a part of your Andaman itinerary too.

Entry Tickets & Timings:

Adult: Rs.150/-  Children: Rs. 75/- (Children (For Hindi Shows at 5:15 PM & 6:20 PM)

Adult: Rs. 100/- Children: Rs. 50  (For Hindi Show at 7:20 PM)

Adult: Rs.50/- Children: Rs. 25/- (For English/Hindi Shows at 8:30 PM)

Visit the Anthropological Museum

It is a museum located in Port Blair dedicated to the rich and decorated tribal history of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands . The museum offers a rare insight into the otherwise protected tribal inhabited areas of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Entry Fee : Rs. 10/-

Timings : Tue -Sun: 9am–1pm, 1:30–4:30pm (Monday Closed)

Amazing Diglipur

Ross and Smith Islands

Diglipur, a small and quaint town located in the North Andaman Islands. One can take a helicopter, ferry or a bus ride to Diglipur. I chose to cover the 300kms journey via bus which takes around 8 hours.

The bus ride was the slowest, yet, most adventurous means of travel to the North Andaman from Port Blair. The bus cuts through the entire landscape of South, middle and North Andaman Islands to reach Diglipur.

Suggested Read: Where The Land Romances The Sea: A Honeymoon Trip To Andaman

Time Required : 3 days

A must-visit place for off-beat travelers and nature lovers, Diglipur offers a peaceful and harmonious alternative to the somewhat commercialized and tourist centric locations in Andamans.

Budget Accommodation : INR 1300 to 2500/night

Due to its location being relatively far from the major tourist locations, the options for a budget stay are limited as mostly families and foreign tourists venture out to the far north.

Places to Visit in Diglipur

The beauty of Diglipur was much anticipated after 8 hours bus ride experience which became a lifetime memory for me.  And here is what all was stored in for me:

Kalipur Beach

Beaches in Diglipur

Kalipur Beach is one of the lesser known beaches of Andaman. It is characterized by brown mud beaches and a good amount of rocky formations in and around the beach.

Soaking the mid-day sun at Ross and Smith

Kalipur beach is also famous for being a turtle nesting site, as it attracts many tourists during the December – January period, when hundreds of turtles descend to the Kalipur beach to lay eggs.

Ross and Smith Islands

Magnificent view of Ross and Smith

It is important that the Ross and Smith Islands are not to be confused with the Ross Island near Port Blair . After reaching Aerial Bay Jetty, I hired a private boat that took me for a day tour to the Ross and Smith Island. The boat takes approximately 30 minutes to reach the Ross and Smith Island.

The boat arrived onto the small sandbar that separated the Ross and Smith Islands. A special feature about these Islands is that there is a low tide during the day which makes a connecting path for both Islands and makes it appear like one Island and after sunset, the water comes up and separates the two Islets for the night.

Arriving at Ross and Smith Island

The view on the beach is gorgeous and extremely scenic, it really left an impact on my mind. It is an ideal spot for photographers to capture some breathtaking views of the Andamans.

Saddle Peak

Enjoying the way to Saddle Peak

Another alternative for all nature and wilderness lovers is to hike the Saddle Peak. Located at 732m, it is the highest point in the Andaman Islands.

Once at the top, The Saddle Peak gives an incredible view of the lush green North Andaman coastline which stretches on till the eye can see.

Fascinating Havelock Island

Beaches on Havelock Island

I boarded a Makruzz Ferry (a privately owned Ferry company for tourists) from Port Blair headed towards Havelock Island. After a ninety-minute ferry ride, upon our arrival, we were greeted by bright and illuminating sunshine sparkling on the white sand beaches.

Serene view of the Kalapathar Beach

The island is by far the most popular tourist destination in the Andaman Islands owing to its scenic beaches and turquoise blue water.

The jewel in the crown of Andamans. Havelock Island comprises of the once voted ‘ Best Beach in Asia-2004’ & ‘World’s 6th Best Beach- 2004’- Radhanagar Beach. Having visited the beach once, it is very hard to resist another visit during the day or the next day.

Budget Accommodation : INR 700 to 2100 per night

A wide variety of accommodations is available on this island purely based on the demand and the annual footfall this island gets. Places ranging from shacks, homestays and guest houses are all available for a budget traveler going to Havelock Island.

Places to visit in Havelock

Havelock welcomes its guests with stunning beach beauty. I had heard a lot from my friends about Havelock and this was the day to see it all.

Elephanta Beach, Kalapathar Beach

Exploring Beaches in Havelock Island

I started by visiting the Kala Pathar Beach. It gets its name from the village that is situated close to the beach and also the rocks that are present on its white sandy beaches.

One can either go via land to cut across on the other side of Havelock or by a 20-minute boat ride from the Havelock Jetty. The beach is also famous for its lighthouse and snorkeling.

Radhanagar Beach

Still water reflection at Radhanagar

As soon as I reached Radhanagar Beach, I was awestruck by the grandeur and the enormity of the beach. Radhanagar stretches out both ways as far as the eye could see.

Lookout at Radhanagar Beach

Once voted as the best beach in Asia, the soft and cushion nature of the sand on Radhanagar gave me a feel of walking on foam and occasionally even lying on it and taking in all its comfort and cool texture. Watching the sunset, with a slight wind blowing across the beach, albeit a partial one was absolutely blissful. I would personally recommend this to all the travelers going to Andaman.

Soft cushioned sand at Radhanagar

Things to Do in Havelock

Now this is what I kept for myself with much excitement. Scuba Diving ofcourse is an out of the world experience.

Scuba Diving in Havelock

Pranav scuba diving in Havelock

I had booked myself for a session of scuba diving with Scuba Wave by Barefoot. After my training, I went for a 60-minute dive with an instructor guiding me every step of my way due to my inability to swim. Spending those 60 minutes underwater was therapeutic.

After seeing a variety of fishes and an octopus, my scuba diving adventure came to end. I collected my pictures and video in my phone on my way out of the Scuba Diving Center.

Serene Neil Island

Delicious local cuisine in Neil Island

An approximate one-hour ferry ride from Havelock Island took me to Neil Island . Yet another Island which was spoilt with natural beauty pretty much untouched by the human civilization. We arrived on the Neil Island Jetty which was adjacent to the Bharatpur Beach.

Neil Island is often considered by many in the Andamans as the half-brother to Havelock Island. Mostly because of the amount of tourism that Havelock gets in comparison with the minuscule amount of visitors Neil Island attracts.

Exploring places to visit at Neil Island

Time Required : 2 days

Many visitors to Andaman might argue with this fact but Neil Island certainly deserves 2 days or a day and a half minimum for its serenity, beauty and blossoming flora and fauna.

Budget Accommodation : INR 500 to 1500 per night

With limited tourism, this Island offers a nice alternative for tourists who found Havelock expensive, overcrowded or commercialized.

Places to See in Neil Island

This was kept as the last destination for my solo trip to Andaman so that I can admire the beauty with serenity. This indeed was the most peaceful experience of all.

Bharatpur Beach

Aqua blue water at Neil Island

Located just 500m away from the Neil Island Jetty, Bharatpur Beach is the main attraction at Neil Island. With a variety of activities like glass boat tour, snorkeling, scuba diving and jet skiing, the area offers plenty of things to do coupled with its scenic backdrop of the beach.

Sunset at Laxmanpur Beach

Laxmanpur Beach in all it's beauty at dusk

Another hidden gem in Andaman that I got to witness by luck, was the Sunset at Laxmanpur Beach at Neil Island. Credit goes again to the amazing people of Andaman who recommend the best tourist spots regardless of their popularity and appeal.

The colors that the sunset left on the canvas were simply magical. A dash of orange with a burst of pink across the skies towards the west, as the sun was setting provided a memorable evening for the tourists present on the Laxmanpur Beach.

Highlights of Andaman

Exploring the landscape of Ross and Smith

  • Seeing the bright and clean white sand beaches with aqua blue waters was a treat to sore eyes.
  • People were very welcoming and helpful. It’s okay to trust strangers, people are very honest.

Tips for travelers

  • Take at least 10 days to visit Andaman as going from one place to another usually takes a lot of sunlight hours.
  • Planning well in advance will help in making your trip to Andaman cost better.
  • Plan your inter-island ferry travel carefully. You need to buy a return ticket before going to any island.
  • A short half-day visit to the Ross and Smith Island is a must.
  • Take adequate medicines for people with sea-sickness as most of the traveling will be done via ferries only.
  • Weather conditions can change very quickly. It is recommended to keep raincoats/jackets with you in a small backpack at all times.

Best time to Visit Andaman

Are you dreaming of a picturesque getaway in the Andaman Islands? Well, allow us to guide you towards the most opportune time to visit this beautiful archipelago. The best time to visit Andaman spans from October to March , when the islands flaunt their best weather, making your adventure unforgettable.

Renowned for its stunning beaches, thrilling water sports, and breathtaking natural beauty, Andaman is a paradise for both adrenaline junkies and tranquillity seekers. But to ensure you can truly soak in the essence of this archipelago, timing is key. When exactly is the best time to drop anchor on these spectacular shores, you ask?

Picture a tropical climate, a sun shining benignly from above, a warm and comfortable breeze brushing past – that’s the Andaman Islands for you. With a lack of any extreme seasonal variations, these islands offer a refreshing departure from blistering heat or harsh cold. Annually, the temperature delicately balances itself between 23°C and 31°C, making the Andaman islands a destination suitable for most parts of the year.

However, the months from June to September carry a different tune – they are the months of monsoon in Andaman. The otherwise clear skies give way to heavy showers, and it’s during this time that it is recommended to the casual tourist to steer clear. But more on this later.

The months from October through March mark the peak tourist season in the Andaman Islands, when its natural grandeur unfurls under the benevolent sun. During this period, both domestic and international travellers flock to the islands, immersing themselves in the idyllic surroundings. With weather conditions perfectly suited for various water sports activities, these months present the ideal time to indulge in the aqua-based adventures that Andaman is so renowned for.

Post-monsoon, nature regenerates in full vigour, transforming the islands into a lush paradise. The beaches come alive, humming with energy as the turquoise waves playfully lap the shores. Beneath the azure canopy of the sky, the underwater world invites explorers to take a dive deep into the thriving coral reefs, ideal for snorkelling and sightseeing.

The Island Tourism Festival during this season is a sight to behold. Spanning over ten days, this lively carnival showcases a vibrant array of exhibitions, dances, and performances, all accompanied by a mouth-watering array of local delicacies and refreshments. Another noteworthy event is the Subash Mela, held in Havelock Island to commemorate the birthday of the iconic freedom fighter, Subash Chandra Bose. The Mela magnetises scores of visitors every year, adding to the festive spirit.

Temperature: Expect a balmy average of 25 to 30 degrees Celsius during these peak months, further enhancing the overall enjoyment of your visit.

Travel Tips: Pack light, breathable clothing, and don’t forget your comfortable beachwear and flip-flops for those sunny seaside days. An essential companion for your Andaman adventure should include sunscreen, a hat, and a stylish pair of sunglasses to protect you from the radiant tropical sun.

The shoulder season of April and May is still a fabulous time to explore Andaman’s adventures, albeit with fewer crowds. Water sports and beach activities remain in full swing, inviting visitors to plunge into a host of adventures. Scuba diving and snorkelling still rule the roost, while more exotic options like deep-sea walking , jet skiing, and rides on glass-bottomed or banana boats offer fresh thrills. For the land lovers, trekking in Andaman and national park explorations provide a taste of Andaman’s terrestrial charm.

Temperature: During the shoulder season, expect the mercury to fluctuate between a warm 31 degrees to a more comfortable 24 degrees Celsius.

Travel Tips: By the end of May, Andaman begins to see the first drops of its monsoon season. It’s prudent to pack an umbrella or a rain poncho to stay prepared for these surprise showers.

The months from June to September in Andaman are characterised by heavy rainfall, signalling the arrival of the monsoon season. If scuba diving, snorkelling, or trekking is high on your list, these months might not present the ideal time to visit Andaman as high tides and stormy seas often cause restrictions to popular island destinations like Havelock, Neil, and Ross.

However, if you’re a lover of monsoon drizzles, solitude, and indoor relaxation, this off-season time has its own charm. Imagine indulging in a soothing spa treatment, or enjoying luxurious amenities, all at a discounted rate at the premier resorts and hotels in Port Blair – a soothing melody to the accompanying rhythm of rain.

Temperature during off season: The temperature during these monsoon months usually stays between 22 to 30 degrees Celsius, adding a cool touch to the warm tropical climate.

Travel Tips: Monsoon in Andaman often means heavy rainfall, restricting your access to the beaches and various islands. So, it’s a good idea to pack rain covers, umbrellas, rain boots, and don’t forget the mosquito repellent – you’ll thank me later!

Andaman is a treasure trove of diverse experiences, appealing to thrill-seekers, nature enthusiasts, and tranquil seekers alike. Let’s break down the best times to immerse yourself in the myriad activities that Andaman offers.
