Okinawa travel guide: Visiting the Japanese southwest islands

April 26, 2019

Okinawa Island

Okinawa Prefecture consists of more than 150 distinct islands, all of which lie 400 miles from mainland Japan . This sets Okinawa apart as a world unto itself.

In Okinawa, you can explore deserted beaches , swim with sea turtles, or snorkel in crystal clear waters. One hundred and eleven of Okinawa’s islands are uninhabited, pristine and untouched , making them prime real estate for adventure. Okinawa is home to rare creatures, such as the Iriomote wild cat, and cuisine unique and different from the rest of Japan .

Whether you’ll be reclining in an all-inclusive resort, or whether backpacking through campgrounds and hostels is more your style, Okinawa offers something for every traveler on every sort of budget . Dive in to this travel guide and discover the many ways in which the islands are calling you.

Brief history of Okinawa

Okinawa is a region rich in history. For centuries, the islands’ diverse people – who may have originated in China, other parts of Asia, or Australia – were united under the Ryukyu Kingdom . By the 15th century, this kingdom had become an economic power. The islands were later invaded by a clan from the Japanese mainland, and officially became part of Japan during the 1800s .

During World War II , Okinawa was invaded by allied forces. The civilian population was decimated, as was the island’s infrastructure and cultural relics. This battle became known as tetsu no ame , or “typhoon of steel.” Echoes of this hardship are present throughout the prefecture. Yet, like a polished precious stone, Okinawa shines brightly despite these historically recent hardships.

Shuri Castle, Okinawa

How to get to Okinawa

Most travelers to Okinawa do so by air . Okinawa’s primary airport of Naha is located on Okinawa Main Island, or Okinawa Honto.

A flight from Tokyo to Okinawa takes approximately between 3 and  2 and a half hours , departing from   Narita Airport . You can fly from Tokyo to Okinawa from about $220 USD.

Traveling from Osaka to Okinawa , via Kansai International Airport , takes about 2 hours . The flight to Naha from Osaka may cost you about $110 USD.

Alternatively, ferries depart for Okinawa from Kagoshima three to four times weekly. The boat trip takes about 26 hours , with prices ranging from ¥15,000 (about $130.00 USD) for fare with no sleeping accommodations, to ¥37,000 (about $330.00 USD) for first class service with bedding.

Peak seasons for travel to Okinawa are during holidays such as Golden Week (late April to early May) and during the month of August. Tickets during these peak seasons sell out quickly and are more expensive than at other times. Special airfare passes are available to foreigners taking domestic flights in Japan such as Japan Explorer Pass . These may reduce round-trip airfare to Okinawa to $115.00 US, or even less.

Getting around Okinawa

Okinawa is an archipelago formed by several islands:

  • Okinawa Island (aka Okinawa Hontō) the main island
  • Iheya-Izena Islands : Iheya and Izena islands
  • Sesoko Island.
  • Yokatsu Islands : Yabuchi, Henza, Miyagi, Ikei, Hamahiga, Tsuken, Ukibara, Minamiukibara and Kudaka islands.
  • Kume Island.
  • Kerama Islands : Tokashiki, Zamami, Aka and Geruma islands.
  • Aguni Islands : Aguni and Tonaki islands.

Unlike the main islands of the Japanese archipelago, in Okinawa there are not as many transportation options or as convenient as the Shinkansen or other trains, so getting around in Okinawa will be somewhat more complicated. We recommend, to explore Okinawa several days, rent a car (remember that in Japan you drive on the left side of the road).

In any case, if you arrive to Okinawa from Naha Airport, you can get to Naha City using the Yui Rail , a monorail that will take you directly from the airport to the city.

You will also find other means of transportation such as taxis and buses , and there is also the possibility of renting motorcycles and bicycles .

Things to do in Okinawa

Packed with beaches and tropical forests , what is there not to do in Okinawa? Hiking, snorkeling, and scuba diving make the short list, but Okinawa has even more to offer.

If Okinawa’s diverse wildlife isn’t enough for you, you can visit the Churaumi Aquarium , considered the best aquarium in Japan and one of the best in the world . A highlight is the Kuroshio Tank, one of the largest fish tanks in the world , which houses the massive whale shark – the largest extant fish in the world. You’ll also enjoy hands-on starfish exhibits; dolphin, sea turtle, and manatee shows; large-scale coral reef exhibits; displays of deep-sea bioluminescent fish; and more.

travel to okinawa from uk

A favorite historical site is the Okinawa Prefectural Peace Memorial Museum and Park , where you can honor the memory of those lost in the Battle of Okinawa. The sobering museum chronicles what led up to the battle, the battle itself, and the subsequent reconstruction.

The Shuri Castle , located in Naha, was built during the 14th century. It was used as a residence by the royal family of Ryukyu Kingdome becoming the political, economic and cultral heart of the Ryukyu Islands for 450 years. It has been destroyed and rebuilt several times throughout its history, most recently during World War II. In 1992 it was reconstructed for the last time in its original site.

Best time to visit Okinawa

Okinawa’s subtropical weather and climate make it a pleasant place to visit year-round . Even during the winter months, daytime temperatures rarely dip below 18 degrees Celsius (64 degrees Fahrenheit). During the summer months of July to October, temperatures may reach 32 degrees Celsius (nearly 90 degrees Fahrenheit), with water temperatures peaking at 28 degrees Celsius (82 degrees Fahrenheit).

Warm ocean currents facilitate some of the most diverse coral reef ecosystems in the world . The islands are divided into three major groups – the Okinawa Shoto which surround the Main Island , the Miyako Retto Islands , and the Yaeyama Retto Islands .

If you need an escape, the sands and shores of Okinawa are waiting for you. Book your JR Pass and start planning your next international adventure, today.

I am very interested in Japan and Okinawa. I love noodles noodles noodles. I also like the customs of politeness and cleanliness! I have been to Japan once before, but it was years ago! Now I am finding myself doing all sorts of research on it! That is all “for what it is worth”! Thank you!

Well happy to read this one

Visiting Okinawa, Japan: What to Do, Where to Stay, and How to Get Around

What to do in Okinawa - the beach at Cape Hedo - Poppin' Smoke

If you’re looking for an affordable beach destination that offers much more than sun and sand, Okinawa, Japan fits the bill. Okinawa is a cluster of islands in the Pacific, about 2 hours south of mainland Japan by plane. It boasts beautiful scenery, a sub-tropical climate, amazing marine life, and gorgeous beaches.

Think of Okinawa as a less-expensive version of Hawaii. With the combination of outdoor, historic, and cultural activities, you could easily spend a week or more in Okinawa and never run out of things to do! Here’s the information you need to start planning your trip.

Contents (click to expand)

Okinawa Orientation

It’s helpful to understand the layout of Okinawa so you can plan your visit and decide where to stay.

The main island is about 70 miles from top to bottom. Naha, the capital, is on the southern third of the island. The cluster of U.S. military bases is in the lower central area of the island (about 45 minutes north of Naha).

The northern part of Okinawa is more rural. It has far fewer inhabitants, and much of the land is subtropical forest.

Things to Do in Okinawa, Japan

Between the two of us, my husband and I have been to Okinawa three times (so far). We’ve stayed at Kadena Air Base (a U.S. Air Force base), but we’ve also rented an Airbnb apartment in Nago, a small city on the northern part of the island and a good base from which to visit north Okinawa and explore the beautiful nature.

Here are some Okinawa attractions that we recommend.

Things to do in Okinawa - view of Cape Hedo from a nearby beach - Poppin' Smoke

This is the northernmost point on the main island of Okinawa. Cape Hedo is where the East China Sea meets the Pacific Ocean, and the views from the cliffs are stunning.

Walk along the short trails to catch the scenery from different vantage points, then follow the road down to the quiet beach at the base of the cliffs.

Things to do in Okinawa - Hiji Falls - Poppin' Smoke

Hiji Falls is the island’s tallest waterfall and one of the most recommended places to visit in Okinawa. The hike to the falls is beautiful and takes 30 – 40 minutes.

It’s not particularly strenuous and is suitable for all ages, but be careful, because the trail is often wet and slippery in patches.

Churaumi Aquarium

Things to do in Okinawa - Churaumi Aquarium shark tank - Poppin' Smoke

This amazing aquarium has some of the most unusual marine life you will ever see. One of the main attractions is their huge tank of whale sharks, manta rays, and other large fish. You can also see beautiful coral, giant squid, and other unique sea creatures.

Outside the main building are a manatee pool, a sea turtle pool, and a dolphin lagoon.

Pro tip: you can save about $6 per person on adult admission if you arrive after 16:00. Click here for the aquarium’s hours and admission prices.

Pizza in the Sky

Located on the top of a small mountain at the end of a winding road, this restaurant is famous for its incredible panoramic views of Okinawa.

The pizza is tasty, but the view is definitely the main event. It’s a short drive from Churaumi Aquarium, so it makes for a great lunch spot before or after your visit.

Nakagusuku Castle Ruins

Things to do in Okinawa - Nakagusuku Castle Ruins - Poppin' Smoke

These ancient castle ruins date from the 14 th century and are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The castle walls are amazingly well-preserved, and you can wander through the various rooms of what was once an immense structure.

One of the best parts of Nakagusuka Castle is the amazing 360 view of the island.

Nakamura House

Things to do in Okinawa - Nakamura House - Poppin' Smoke

Only a short drive from Nakagusuku Castle is the Nakamura House , an example of a traditional Japanese farmhouse. You can walk through all of the rooms in this large and beautiful old home and imagine exactly how it looked when it was bustling with activity.

Nakamura House also has a gift shop where you can relax, have tea, and enjoy traditional Japanese sweets.

Banyan Tree Golf Course

If you’re a golfer, Okinawa is a fantastic travel destination! The island has many golf courses, but look no further than Kadena Air Base for a world-class par 72 course with incredibly low green fees.

Banyan Tree is the larger of two golf courses at Kadena and is located right on the base (the other course, Chibana , is a par 3 located just outside the gate).

Kadena Marina

This dive shop and aquatic center is located just a mile from Kadena AB. You can rent any type of marine equipment, including boats, jet-skis, stand-up paddles boards, snorkeling and SCUBA equipment, kayaks, and fishing gear.

You can also take their course to obtain your SCUBA certification or, if you are already certified, join one of their cool diving trips.

After a day on the water, enjoy a meal overlooking the ocean at Kadena’s Seaside restaurant.

Kokusai Dori

This street is frequently recommended as a “must-see” in Naha. While very touristy, if you’re wondering what to buy in Okinawa, it’s a great place for souvenirs and gifts.

Most stores have free tastes of the many traditional Okinawan treats available for sale, so you could easily fill up by visiting multiple stores on this street.

More Attractions in Okinawa

We still have a long list of other Okinawa travel destinations to see on future visits, including the WWII memorials (south of Naha), Kouri Island (it’s a short drive from the aquarium, but we didn’t have a chance to see it), and Miyako Island , one of the many smaller islands that make up Okinawa and must be accessed by plane.

There are hundreds of fun things to do in Okinawa for all ages and interests, so take your pick! For more ideas, visit Okinawa Hai , a website for Okinawa’s English-speaking community.

Where to Stay in Okinawa

Orange flower in Okinawa

You have many affordable lodging options in Okinawa. Choose your accommodations based on where on the island you want to stay and how you want to spend your time.

Hotels in Okinawa

Okinawa has hotels all over the island ranging from small guest houses to beach resorts. The largest concentration is in Naha.

Use Agoda to search for Okinawa hotels (Agoda is the best hotel platform for Japan).

A better way to get a more authentic experience and a true taste of Japan is to use Airbnb in Okinawa. You can find apartments all over the island, and in many cases, they offer better access to the local area than hotels and more personal space.

Our apartment in Nago was about $35 per night and very convenient for visiting the northern part of the island as well as Churaumi Aquarium.

Click here to learn more about using Airbnb in Japan.

Kadena Air Base

If you are a member of the U.S military community and take a Space-A flight to Okinawa (more on that below), you will most likely land at Kadena AB. Kadena has two lodging options: Shogun Inn and Navy Gateway Inns and Suites (NGIS). You can walk to NGIS, but the Shogun Inn is far from the terminal.

Some of the other U.S. military bases in the area also have lodging, but Kadena is the largest base and has the most facilities. Retirees and active duty stationed outside Japan can use MWR facilities as well as the BX and commissary, which makes staying there incredibly convenient.

The trade-off of staying on base is that you don’t get much of the Japanese experience.

Okuma Beach

Another Okinawa lodging option for U.S. military is Okuma Beach , an MWR recreation facility. It’s on the northern part of Okinawa, near Hiji Falls (about a 90-minute drive from Kadena).

Okuma Beach offers a variety of beach and marine activities, including jet ski rental, glass bottom boat tours, and snorkeling. They also have tennis, golf, and Go-Karting. Accommodations include cottages, cabins, bungalows, and individual studios/suites.

Flights to Okinawa

Japan has several low-cost airlines that have cheap flights to Okinawa. They can be an incredible bargain if you’re traveling to Okinawa from within Japan or somewhere else in Asia.

We flew from Fukuoka (the southwestern part of mainland Japan) to Naha for less than $50 per person round trip on Peach Aviation. Vanilla Air is another low-cost carrier that flies into Naha.

U.S Military Travelers: Flying Space-A to Okinawa

Okinawa is one of the most accessible destinations in the Pacific for military travelers flying Space-A.

The most frequent flights from the U.S. directly to Okinawa are from Travis AFB and JB Pearl Harbor-Hickam. You can also take the Patriot Express from Seattle Tacoma (SeaTac) International Airport.

If you’re starting from somewhere else in the Pacific, there are frequent hops from Yokota AB and MCAS Iwakuni in Japan and from Andersen AFB in Guam.

Click here for more information about flying Space-A to Japan , including immigration procedures specific to Okinawa.

Getting Around Okinawa

If you plan to spend any period of time in Okinawa, you need a rental car. Even if you’re a military traveler staying at Kadena AB, a car is necessary because there is no base shuttle, and the base is very spread-out.

To rent a car in Japan , you must obtain an International Driving Permit (IDP) before you arrive. IDPs cost $20, and all you need are a valid U.S. driver’s license and two passport-size photos.

Click here for more information about car rental in Japan .

We found the best deals on Okinawa car rentals at Grace Rent A Car in Naha. Their vehicles were brand-new, and the company had a convenient free shuttle to and from Naha airport. You can book your reservation via their website, which has an English version.

If you’re flying Space-A to Okinawa , renting on base may be a better idea. Times Car Rental has two locations on Kadena Air Base: one is by the gas station close to the passenger terminal, and the other is in building 328 of the Shogun Inn.

On-base rental might be more expensive than Grace, but when flying out from Kadena, if you are able to drive yourselves to the immigration office and leave the car in the terminal parking lot, you will save a lot of time, money, and hassle!

Tips for Driving in Okinawa

The Japanese drive on the left side of the road. The driver’s seat and steering wheel are on the right side of the vehicle. It takes some getting used to, but is not difficult.

Fortunately, the Japanese are generally more patient and less aggressive than drivers in many other parts of the world. No one honked or gave us the finger when we made mistakes.

When driving around Okinawa, there are some very scenic routes that hug the coast and offer incredible views. I recommend doing these drives at least once or whenever you have time.

There is also an expressway that runs down the center of Okinawa. It is much faster, but it has tolls and it’s not nearly as scenic.

Ready to Pack Your Bags?

Okinawa has something for everyone, whether you like beaches, diving, hiking, shopping, or history. It’s easy to travel to Okinawa from other cities in Japan or elsewhere in Asia, and the island is generally inexpensive. What more could you ask for in a vacation destination?

Top 5 airlines flying to okinawa.

The space for the seats i like it. Its not too close like other air line. The food is ok and also the staff. I'm waiting for my flight rewards point because until now i didn't recieved it.

The staff, ground and air, at ANA was very helpful and friendly during check in, boarding and during the flight. This is the reason why I always fly ANA whenever I go to Manila. The food was not the best but the flight crew more than makes up for the shortfall.

First I will say this was really NOT an ANA flight. ANA used a UNITED jet to perform this flight. I specifically booked with ANA because I did NOT WANT TO FLY UNITED FOR INTERNATIONAL FLIGHTS. So to spend $1800.00 and then discover after booking that it was going to be handled by United was very disappointing. I will be more careful next time when I book. The interior was very cramped in economy class; the dinner meal was terrible and also had extremely small portions for an international flight - the bread roll was ice cold and stale - that salad was very wilted; I’ve never had a “snack” that was so salty that it was difficult to eat; the breakfast “waffle” was practically unrecognizable. Really horrible meals for a very expensive international flight. Bathroom floor was also pretty dirty. I’m hoping my return flight is a real ANA airplane that is cleaned and serviced by ANA personnel with ANA meals. I will never book with ANA again if they continue to use UNITED airline jets. Yuck!!!🤢

Ticket was purchased as a United Airlines flight (operated by All Nippon) like what does that even mean? Makes for a VERY confusing flight experience. For instance, what do I look for a United drop off signage and ticket counter or ANA? No explanation anywhere to be found. I also felt a little bit scammed by the obsurdely restrictive seat selection provided. Only middle seats available!! Are you kidding me!! On 6hr + 10hr flights you're forcing me into the middle seat without telling me before I purchased the ticket?? This should be illegal. And to top it off, on the Tokyo LA leg there were quite a few empty seats including window seats! I must also say, the food was a dissappointing as well for my taste, fish with rice ( mostly plain white rice) or a vegetable medly for the breakfast meal? Should be at least 4 choices and at least 1 with eggs. Outside of these issues flight was otherwise ok.

Ground and flight crew were all courteous, extremely helpful and professional. Overall, process is really organized, from boarding to disembarkation.

This is a very long flight and the first time I have flown on a Japanese airline. I was very impressed with the staff. They worked hard and offered food and drink regularly. Plane was very well cared for. The let room was good . Food was ok but better than other airlines.

It was very nice. I was a bit disappointed by the few meal services. There were probably more drink services that I missed while sleeping, but I would have liked the crew to bring more than one drink service before landing and to bring more than one drink service and coffee service after take off

The space and bed was very comfortable , flight attendants very nice. The food was not tasty at all. I ordered the rib eye and it was so tough I couldn’t cut it.

I wish the serve should leach and drink. Maybe because only 2hr

Seat was roomy enough . The Asian selection for a meal was good . The tortellini was not very good. Service was excellent. O

Fast and efficient boarding. Flight was on time. Service was very good for our long flight. First time flying with this airline and I would highly recommend.

Eva Air's Business Class is pretty decent. With the given price, I think that the food can be better.

Pleasant, comfortable, and entertaining. All told, ZERO issues with it. And sadly, so far the flight was WAY more comfortable than the hellhole that is "Lambug Beach Resort" at Badian Beach!

It was a pleasant fly with Eva Air from NYC to Taipei. The crew were friendly and the food was exceeded my expectation.

Eva air is a good airline. The seats on the way to Taipei could have certainly been more comfortable, but all in all it was a pretty good experience.

Overall the flight was what might be expected for a long haul flight to Asia in economy class. The cabin crew was attentive and the food was good. Boarding was fairly fast and easy. The one thing I found frustrating was the EVA app. It is terrible. Trying to do anything on it was almost impossible.

EVA would not help with ticket issue since they were purchased through a travel agency. Even though it was EVA ticket stock. Travel agency Budget Air didn't reissue ticket after airline change which I didn’t learn until trying to checkin on Christmas Day and there was no contact number for the agency to help. I will never use Budget Air to purchase flight again and disappointed in EVA’s refusal to help. Thankfully just under 12 hrs before departure someone from the agency was available to reissue tickets. I was starting to think we would not be flying and the stress trying to resolve was completely unacceptable.

seamless check in/ friendly staff, food is good, always love flying Eva Air

Very uncomfortable and crowded seats in economy. Flight attendant refused request to move to nearby unused seat with more legroom because “It was more money for that seat”. It was also near impossible to reach airline directly by phone. Waits upwards of an hour and not very helpful customer service representatives after long wait. Cannot recommend this airline.

My experience with Eva sir was good except the long walk in LA Lex, that was inconvenient for my age,

I like the braised beef., miso soup,, and green tea. Very little choices of hollywood movies. The PA announcement in English was not very clear and very soft. I could hardly hear.

More updated movies & Chinese movies. The food sometimes overcooked. Prefer to have more neat snacks in between than just choose from the menu. Please change the menu every now and then. This is my second time flying within one year and the menu didn’t change at all!

Food is lagging. Very poor choice. Like vending machine fast food.

Please change the menu more often. The beef is not tender, more choice in ice cream flavor. Dessert is not good too.

The Experience was fantastic, it's a quick flight so no entertainment or food. Just a refreshment

Great crew, Japanese domestic flight is just a drink service but crew are very attentive

Again I paid for an upgrade on my credit card didn’t get it need a refund. . American I not good at gettin in contact for refunds.

l enjoyed the variety of good and drink choices. The flight attendants were very quick and efficient to our needs.

-Bathrooms were regularly checked/maintained. -Food was okay, but the miso soup was good. -Top of my foot got bitten by a bug when I took off my shoes and was only wearing my socks. It was swollen and very itchy for several days.

Truly impressive service in the air. After the main meal, they have a delicious a la carte menu that you can order anytime until 1.5 hrs prior to landing. Flight crew were so pleasant and very efficient. Wish I could fly JAL more often!

On time every leg of the journey and exceptional staff at counter, gate, and on board. I haven’t travelled in US for a long time and was genuinely surprised how pleasant this was.

Hated every minute of it. This flight should have only taken 1.5hrs but was delayed over 10hours. Now I am being told I cannot be compensated or refunded my ticket price or extra leg room, which I purchased but did not receive, because the airline is throwing the blame on the 3rd party I purchased tickets through and 3rd party putting the blame on airline. No one wants to help. They received their money and that's all they care about. Im going on 3 days of still trying to get to my final destination, had to cancel car rental, car insurance and hotel. Currently staying in airport until hotels open up. Thank you Lufthansa, Kayak, Underpricer and United for making this trip the worst ever.

The delays (5 hrs) were a comedy of errors, and the multiple safety issues encountered were very concerning.

flight delays, staff only communicating when pushed, food service lasting a grand total of 7 minutes, stuck in seat from 45mins into flight until landing

Crew was great and did their best to make us comfortable and captain came out at the beginning to announce why the flight was delayed, weather situation up ahead, and kept us updated throughout the flight.

the flight from Tampa departed with a delay. The food on board was poor, usually on international airlines alcoholic beverages are offered free of charge , but here it was for a fee, the cutlery was wooden, there were no hot drinks (tea, coffee). Unfortunately, I didn't take pictures of the portions of food, but it wouldn't have been enough for a child either. And in the future, I will try not to use the services of this airline

they made me check my carryon. There was space in the overhead bins.

Nice flight, nice crew but no cookie or napkin with my seltzer.

Trip was smooth bumpy from the wind but no issues at all the crew attendant was very pleasant and had great customer service

This was a Lufthansa flight. Disappointing main meal. Very rough over Canada and arrival at FRA. IFE was almost unusable.

Comfort of seats, ease of boarding. Food selection could be better

i suspect i caught flu on this flight as i could hear someone coughing a few rows back and ended up with flu a few days later. also tiresome to have to watch movies on my device by holding up smartphone screen, would have liked to have in seat display.

Flight was fine. It took an unusually long time to have baggage delivered to the carousel in ORD.

No problems with flight. Even though I had a short layover in DFW, I was still able to easily make my connection.

American Airlines continues to price it can provide the least comfortable passenger experience in the air. This legacy carrier rivals the budgets for both terrible seats and inadequate amenities. I am a 5’7” woman who is not wider than a coach seat (even on these narrow bodied aircraft). My 3.5 hour flight was terribly uncomfortable because the leg room is inadequate (my knees hit the seat on front of me even when it was not reclined); the seat barely reclines; and the foam padding is worn thin to the extent one can feel the metal supports of the seat. Add to this the fact that the aisle is super narrow, so that the drink cart literally scrapes the arm rest of the aisle seat. It’s basically torture.

Food options were limited which is absolutely embarrassing for a Flight of this size The staff did not come around as much and I am not accustomed to such poor service from American Airlines Drinks I believe were limited to soda and water

Plane took off without me, my stepdad and a dozen other passengers. It went from an hour delay to boarding in 15 montures without notifying anyone. Names were not called overhead. Now I’m missing a day of work and stuck in Charolette overnight paying for a hotel and Ubers out of pocket

I arrived to the airport 2 hours before my American Airlines flight was scheduled to take off. I have TSA pre-check. The airport was crazy packed when I arrived. After momentarily standing in the pre-check line, the TSA agent said that I am not pre-check. Of course I said that I am because I entered my KTN number on all my traveling sites and programs. I had to get out of line and go back to the AA counter to discover that American Airlines did not add my KTN to my boarding pass. I had to call TSA to find out my number, then have AA enter it onto my boarding pass. The emblem would not load onto my boarding pass. By this time, I decided to use my Clear in order to get through TSA but the line was ridiculous long. By the time I made through TSA, I missed my 11:08am flight and was re-booked for the 5:30pm. This is after the AA employee told me I should have gotten to the airport early. AA use to be a dependable airline not I use them only if I have too.

Average - flew with Jet Blue internal and it was far more comfortable and better food and entertainment. Notable difference

Flight from SBP to DFW 1. They rerouted us through PHX 2. Delayed flight out of SBP for 3 hrs so we missed our connection Downgrade on rerouted flight. Back of the plane, center seats, didn't sit together 4. Return flight out of DFW same exact thing. Delayed, missed connection, Downgrade + they lost our luggage! A complete mess.

A guide to the tropical Japanese islands of Okinawa

O kinawa is Japan’s southernmost prefecture and is made up of a chain of over 160 islands located in the East China Sea between Taiwan and Japan’s mainland.

Sometimes called the “Hawaii of Japan”, the tropical islands are known for beaches, a year-round warm climate, large coral reefs, excellent diving and snorkelling, national parks, and a laid-back atmosphere that sets it apart from mainland Japan.

A quick flight from almost any major city in Japan, Okinawa is hugely popular with domestic tourists, but it usually escapes the attention of international visitors. If you’re planning a trip to Japan, it’s well worth thinking about including a few days in Okinawa – it’s an opportunity to experience a different side of Japan and to spend a few relaxing days outside of the big frantic cities.

One large island called Okinawa dominates the region in terms of size, population, and tourism, and is the best starting point for a first-time visitor, but the smaller islands do offer a greater feeling of escapism. A group of islands in the far south called the Yaeyama Islands, which includes Taketomi and Ishigaki, are particularly worth the extra effort – three nights on the main island and two on one of these smaller islands would make for an ideal introductory itinerary to Okinawa.

Scenic Drives

Most Okinawa trips will begin with landing at Naha, the capital of the main island. It’s a good idea to hire a car here as it’s the best way to explore and escape the more built-up areas in the south (Naha itself is a bit gritty so it’s best to stay further north). Driving is very easy as the roads are calm and cars are right-hand drive, the same as in the UK – just make sure that you get an International Driving Permit before you leave. As well as being best on a practical level, driving around Okinawa is a pleasure, particularly in the far north where the road hugs the scenic coastline, passing through small villages, and reaching remote deserted beaches.

Hiking in Yanbaru National Park

Much of the northern half of Okinawa Island is dominated by Yanbaru National Park, which has great hiking trails to explore. Some involve steep and strenuous mountain climbs, but there are gentler trails too, such as the Hiji Falls route, which takes you along a river up to a waterfall, and the Kunigami Forest Park loop.

Okinawa has many beautiful-looking beaches but be warned that swimming can be tricky at many of them during low tide when the water is shallow and the likelihood of scraping your skin on sharp coral is high. One of the better swimming beaches is Mission Beach , located about halfway up the west coast, with clear clam water and pristine white sand tucked into a small cove. You’ll have to pay a fee to use the beach but it’s worth it.

Further up the coast, there’s Sesoko Beach on Sesoko Island (linked to the main island by a road bridge) which is much bigger and features a long stretch of white sand. There’s an official part of the beach with lifeguards and a marked swimming zone, but head to the left and keep walking and you’ll have your own private area away from the crowds.

Tobaru is another large, but much quieter beach that’s a great stop-off when driving the coastal road – it benefits from being well away from the road so you can relax away from the traffic noise.

To really get away from it all, head to Oku Beach on the far north of the island, which has stunning scenery and hardly any visitors.

Snorkelling, Diving and Whale-Watching

The coral reefs and clear waters that surround many of Okinawa’s islands make it a top spot for snorkelling and diving. Ishigaki is a particularly good island to visit for diving but there are organised day tours over the region that will take you to remote spots where you might be able to spot manta rays, turtles, hammerhead sharks, and lots of colourful tropical fish. If you prefer to stay above water, whale-watching trips are also available between January and March when humpback whales are migrating.

Food and Drink

Okinawa is known as one of the world’s ‘Blue Zones’, owing to the high proportion of residents living healthily until very old age (often over 100). This is attributed to everything from the water to an active lifestyle and the diet which is largely based on local vegetables, fruit, and fish.

Ogimi village is a particular blue zone hotspot on the island – visit Emi no Mise for lunch to sample their life-extending local cuisine.

A must-visit is the tiny 100-year-old noodle shop, Kishimoto Shokudo , (a convenient lunch stop after a morning on Sesoko beach) which specialises in Okinawa soba noodles – thick, hand-cut wheat noodles in a clear broth topped with juicy, almost sweet slices of pork.

Hitsumabushi Wadahei specialises in unagi (freshwater eel), which is grilled over charcoal and served on rice with lashings of unagi sauce. Crisp, ice-cold beers and tonkatsu (thick pork chops covered in breadcrumbs and deep fried) are the speciality of the laid-back KamataTomizen – probably the antithesis of the blue zone diet but absolutely delicious all the same.

Where to stay

HOSHINOYA Okinawa

Undoubtedly the smartest most luxurious hotel on the island, HOSHINOYA Okinawa has an incredible setting on a quiet stretch of rocky coast near Yomitan village. 100 modern guest villas are spread out along the coastline, jutting right up to the sea in many instances, with views that look out over the bright coral-rich waters. Inside, the villas offer supremely comfortable digs, including a large living area, a sunken floor traditional Japanese dining table, fridge and cooking facilities, large futon-style beds and, best of all, uninterrupted views of the beautiful blue sea. At the back, the villas are connected by lovely landscaped gardens that are walled in by a long concrete wall modelled on traditional Japanese fortresses – gusuku castles – that used to be dotted all over the island. Facilities include a heated infinity pool, an activity studio with regular events such as karate demos, and a smart restaurant serving unique tasting menus that take inspiration from both Okinawa and Sicily.

Rates start from 136,000 JPY / £785 per room per night (room only); hoshinoya.com/okinawa

Many of the hotels in Okinawa are large resorts with hundreds of rooms, which can vary in quality. The best of the bunch in this category is the relatively new Halekulani, which opened in 2021 and is the sister property to a hotel of the same name in Hawaii. It’s a huge, sprawling place but still properly luxurious with multiple restaurants, five swimming pools, and bright, spacious rooms with balconies that look out to sea. There’s also a private beach and an excellent spa offering massages and traditional onsen hot baths to unwind in. The pick of the dining options has to be the intimate Japanese restaurant, Aomi, which serves fresh sushi and traditional dishes using local Okinawa produce. Halekulani is an excellent choice for both families and older travellers, who can opt to stay in the more relaxed Sunset Wing, or even in one of the villas which feature private pools.

Rooms from 77,166 JPY / £420 per night with breakfast for two; okinawa.halekulani.com

HOSHINOYA Taketomi Island

The tiny Taketomi Island only has around 300 residents and is worth visiting to get a glimpse of traditional Okinawan life, which the islanders are fighting hard to preserve. You can easily visit on a day trip if you’re staying on the larger Ishigaki island next door, but nothing beats a couple of nights at the HOSHINOYA hotel here.

On a quiet patch on the east side of the island, the hotel is laid out exactly like one of the traditional Taketomi villages with guest villas arranged along narrow sandy streets. Each of the 48 villas is a single-story wooden building with Ryukyu red-tiled rooves and each one is guarded by different shisa figures (guardian lions of Okinawa believed to protect houses against evil). Inside the rooms, there’s a mix of traditional Japanese features such as sliding paper screen doors and futon beds, together with modern luxurious flourishes such as a plush freestanding bathtub.

Around the hotel, there’s a huge elliptical outdoor heated pool, a spa, and a restaurant serving a blend of French and Okinawan cuisines. You can also opt for excellent room service meals, with both Japanese and Western options.

Rates start from 112,000 JPY / £645 per room per night (room only); hoshinoya.com

Considering a once-in-a-lifetime Japan holiday? Look no further with these magnificent options

a shot of famous red pagoda, chureto and mt fuji

While the country's big-hitting cities such as spiritual Kyoto, cosmopolitan Osaka and vibrant Tokyo, Japan's capital and a popular springboard for Mount Fuji, are all must-sees, there are the sunny southern islands of Japan to discover too. With breath-taking beaches and a slower pace of life, they're the ideal spot for a more leisurely trip. And then there are the Japanese Alps, vast and verdant, and a hugely popular choice for a Japan skiing holiday.

While you need to consider where you'd like to visit on your epic Japan adventure, there's also the case of how . Flights go direct from London to Tokyo, but when it comes to choosing how to traverse this incredible country there are numerous options – from guided coach tours to luxury cruises.

For a helping hand with where to start, we've rounded up some of our favourite ways to discover Japan, including a group tour across the Japanese Alps , a 17-day cruise during beautiful cherry blossom season, and an indulgent inclusive break in sun-drenched Okinawa.

A tour of Japan's essential highlights

aerial view by drone of mount fuji at kawaguchiko lake, yamanashi, japan fujisan on sunrise

Embark on this thrilling 13-day roundtrip from Tokyo, which showcases the magical, ancient heritage of Japan as well as its futuristic, neon-lit metropolises. This guided tour, which includes coach travel and hotel accommodation, will give you plenty of time to soak up the colour and culture of Japan's capital, which boasts the bustling shopping district of Ginza, vivid Harajuku, iridescent Akihabara electric town, and world-famous Meiji Shrine in Shibuya, the commercial district.

This accessible and fully-organised tour covers all the essentials and more.

Join us on the Good Housekeeping 13-day Japan tour in August 2024.

A cruise in beautiful cherry blossom season

japan's earliest cheery blossom in okinawa

One of the biggest draws to Japan is undeniably its picturesque cherry blossom season and the custom of hanami , admiring the beauty of it. Every spring, millions of locals and visitors alike patiently wait for the first sakura (the Japanese term for cherry blossom) buds to bloom, showing off their delicate, baby pink-hued petals. The abundance of blossom flowering is celebrated with festivals, picnics and the eating of seasonal, sakura-themed delicacies.

If experiencing this springtime phenomenon is on your bucket list, then this 17-day cruise in Japan is for you. While giving you the opportunity to catch the cherry blossom in cities like Tokyo and Osaka, the leisurely sailing with Holland America enables you to see plenty more of Japan, too. Other port stops include Kagoshima, Nagasaki, Aomori and the lively, karaoke-loving city of Busan in South Korea. And all of this is without mentioning the incredible entertainment, food and bars onboard your ship, of course.

A jaunt through the Japanese Alps with plenty of tradition

reflection of farmhouses with trees and landscape in background

While this group tour ticks off the unmissable cities of Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto and Nara, it takes its guests on a journey through the beautiful Japanese Alps, a series of mountain ranges on the island of Honshu. This mountainous region is home to an abundance of picturesque cities and towns, all offering a glimpse into Japan's rural life. On this 13-day tour you'll visit the pretty city of Takayama, which brims with Edo Period houses, food and craft markets and traditional restaurants.

You'll also get the chance to wander the village of Shirakawago, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its thatched roof farmhouses that are said to resemble the praying hands of Buddhist monks. Along with admiring gorgeous scenery, you'll have the chance to get on hands-on with activities such as miso-making, washi paper-making, gold leaf crafting and origami. If you're craving a taste of traditional Japan, you'll find bags of it on this brilliantly-curated trip.

A city break in Tokyo, Japan's energetic capital

crowds of people walking among illuminated neon signs on the streets of tokyo, japan

If you've got limited time or would prefer to dedicate your trip to just one destination in Japan, then Tokyo is the answer. Known as Edo until 1868, the Japanese capital is the world's most populous city and thus it's a melting pot of activity, culture and cuisines. As city breaks go, you'll be spoilt for choice here: see the Imperial Palace and many landscaped gardens (we like Koishikawa Korakuen and Hama Rikyu) in central Tokyo, the museums and towering Skytree viewing platform for city-wide views in northern Tokyo, and the busy shopping and entertainment districts of Shibuya, Shinjuku and Harajuku in the west.

For easy access to all of this (and so much more) it's best to base yourself centrally, and a hotel would give you the benefit of a helpful concierge to offer recommendations, book transfers and advise on transport throughout your trip. In a city with so much to offer, a bit of local knowledge goes a long way.

Plan a Tokyo city break British Airways, where you can book flights and hotels as a package.

A relaxing all-inclusive holiday in Okinawa

the anchored boats are aligned at the seashore and on the emerald green water of the sea shot at kabira bay, ishigaki island, okinawa, japan on the morning of a fine day

The idyllic island of Ishigaki is part of the Okinawa Prefecture in southern Japan, where the climate is tropical and the weather is warm and humid all year round. It's here that you'll find Club Med's Kabira Ishigaki resort , perched on the edge of the Kabira peninsula with endless views of the turquoise ocean ahead. A family-friendly resort, Kabira Ishigaki is the ideal way to see Japan with a hearty side of rest and relaxation. You can lounge around the freshwater pool and unwind with a treatment in the spa, or, on days where you can muster the energy, try your hand at windsurfing or kayaking in the crystal-clear sea.

The ocean is sacred here, as it's home to manta rays and other marine life, and guests wanting to learn more about life under the water's surface can book eco-friendly snorkelling tours or day trips to nearby islands. There's the chance to experience local culture on dry land too, as guests can take part in sanshin lessons (an Okinawan musical instrument that's similar to a banjo) and sample Okinawan flavours with a selection of traditional dishes, all served in a restaurant that offers 180-degree sea views. Sounds like paradise to us...

Soak up the sun, sand and sea of southern Japan at Club Med's Kabira Ishigaki resort.

US and UK issue new sanctions on Iran in response to Tehran’s weekend attack on Israel

WASHINGTON — The U.S. and U.K. on Thursday imposed a new round of sanctions on Iran as concern grows that Tehran’s unprecedented attack on Israel could fuel a wider war in the Middle East.

The sanctions are meant to hold Iran accountable for its weekend attack and to deter further such activity. But the practical impact is likely to be limited because many of the targeted companies already were subject to U.S. sanctions and the individuals singled out for new sanctions are unlikely to have assets in U.S. jurisdictions.

Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control targeted 16 people and two entities in Iran that produce engines that power the drones used in the April 13 attack on Israel. OFAC also sanctioned five firms involved in steel production and three subsidiaries of Iranian automaker Bahman Group — which is accused of materially supporting Iran’s military and other sanctioned groups. A representative from Bahman was not immediately available for comment.

Additionally, the U.K. targeted several Iranian military branches and individuals involved in Iran’s drone and ballistic missile industries.

President Joe Biden said in a statement that he had directed U.S. Treasury “to continue to impose sanctions that further degrade Iran’s military industries.” “Let it be clear to all those who enable or support Iran’s attacks,” he said, “we will not hesitate to take all necessary action to hold you accountable.”

U.K. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said in a statement that the sanctions “will further limit Iran’s ability to destabilize the region.”

In addition, the U.S. Commerce Department is imposing new controls to restrict Iran’s access to commercial grade microelectronics, which applies to items manufactured outside the U.S. that are produced using U.S. technology.

The actions come after U.S. officials earlier this week warned that they were readying new sanctions in response to Iran’s activity in the region and to prevent future attacks. Lawmakers on Capitol Hill also have been quickly pushing forward legislation that would financially punish the Islamic Republic and its leaders.

Deputy State Department spokesman Vedant Patel told reporters Thursday that the U.S. reimposed travel restrictions on the Iranian delegation at the United Nations that prevents them from traveling outside a two-block radius of U.N. headquarters. These restrictions were imposed during the Trump administration but were lifted very early on by the Biden administration.

Iran’s attack on Israel early Sunday came in response to what it says was an Israeli strike on Iran’s consulate in Syria earlier this month. Israel’s military chief said Monday that his country will respond to the Iranian attack, while world leaders caution against retaliation, trying to avoid a spiral of violence.

European Union leaders also vowed on Wednesday to ramp up sanctions on Iran, targeting its drone and missile deliveries to proxies in Gaza, Yemen and Lebanon.

EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said the existing EU sanctions regime would be strengthened and expanded to punish Tehran and help prevent future attacks on Israel. At the same time, he said, Israel needed to exercise restraint.

“I don’t want to exaggerate, but we are on the edge of a war, a regional war in the Middle East, which will be sending shockwaves to the rest of the world, and in particular to Europe,” he warned. “So stop it.”

The U.S. has already sanctioned hundreds of entities and people in Iran — from the central bank and government officials to drone producers and money exchangers — accused of materially supporting Iran’s Revolutionary Guard and foreign militant groups such as Hamas, Hezbollah and the Houthis.

And U.S. efforts to limit Iran’s income from oil and petroleum products span back decades.

The question remains how effective sanctions will be, and have been, in preventing Iran from ramping up its production of military equipment. American defense officials accuse Iran of supplying drones to Russia as it pursues its invasion of Ukraine, which has reached a third year.

Richard Goldberg, who served as the director for countering Iranian weapons of mass destruction at the National Security Council during the Trump administration, called the new sanctions “important but unimpactful.”

Goldberg, who is a senior adviser at the Washington think tank Foundation for Defense of Democracies, said the sanctions rightly impose restrictions on entities involved in Iran’s manufacture of missiles and drones and reinforce some actions affecting key industries already on the books. But he said the new sanctions do not move the ball in forcing the Iranians to seriously change their calculus.

Daniel Pickard, a sanctions attorney at Buchanan, Ingersoll & Rooney in Washington, said “Iran is now and has been for years the biggest funder of terrorism and sanctions aren’t going to stop that — its the idea that the country is being essentially divorced from the international financial system” he said.

Citing the possibility of sanctions stifling Iran’s economy — “it could only take one more push for its economy to go into an unstoppable slide.”

Earlier this week, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said during a press conference that the U.S. has “been working to diminish Iran’s ability to export oil.”

“There may be more that we could do,” she said.

Associated Press reporters Aamer Madhani and Matt Lee contributed to this report.
