Savandurga Hills Trek: Timings, Entry Fee, Best Time to Visit and How to Reach

Just 60 km away from the bustling city of Bengaluru, lies the serene and majestic Savandurga Hills, a trek that I’ve had the pleasure of undertaking multiple times. Each journey to the top of Asia’s largest monolith hill has been a unique experience, filled with challenges, breathtaking views, and a sense of accomplishment.

Savandurga Hills Trek Board

From the panoramic vistas of Magadi, Manchabele and Thippagondanahalli reservoirs, to the winding Arkavathi river, the scenery is simply mesmerizing. The Savandurga hill cluster, comprising the “Karigudda” (Black hill) and “Biligudda” (White hill), along with the historic Savandurga fort, has always been a sight to behold.

History Savandurga Hills

Nestled in the heart of Karnataka, Savandurga, a hill 33 km west of Bangalore, rises to 1226 m above mean sea level.

Savandurga Hills is considered to be among the largest monolith hills in Asia . Comprising two hills, the Billigudda (white hill) and the Karigudda (black hill), Savandurga provides a thrilling environment for trekking and rock climbing.

Savandurga was a prominent place during the Hoysala rule. The hill fort on the top of the hill was erected in 1543 by Samanta Raya .

Savandurga Hills was under the control of Kempe Gowda until 1728 when it was captured by the Raja of Mysore, who subsequently lost it to Haider Ali. In 1791, during the Third Anglo-Mysore War, Lord Cornwallis seized Savandurga from Tipu Sultan’s army.

At the base of these hills, one can find the Savandi Veerabhadreshwara Swamy and Narasimha Swamy temples, drawing pilgrims from across the region.

The journey to these temples is thrilling due to the uneven path, thus making it to the wish-list of rock-climbers, cave-explorers, and adventurers.

Getting to Savandurga Hills

The journey to Savandurga is half the adventure. There are two main routes to get there from Bangalore.

  • The first is the NICE toll road , which extends from Electronic City to Mysore Road. Despite being a longer route for some, I recommend this route for its well-maintained roads and quick travel time.
  • Alternatively, you can drive through the city on smaller roads and join Mysore Road. After reaching Mysore road, a drive through the Savandurga forest and some charming villages will get you to the base of the hills.
  • If you’re taking a bus, you can catch one from Majestic Bus Stop to Magadi and then a shared auto or bus to Sri Lakshmi Narasimhaswamy Temple.

The serenity of the forests at night and the allure of the moonlit road are experiences I highly recommend. However, remember to remain cautious while navigating through this area.

My Savandurga Hills Trek Experience

The Savandurga Hills trek offers two trails – “Karigudda” and “Biligudda”. However, the Forest Department only permits the Biligudda trail for public trekking .

The starting point of this trail is near the Sri Lakshmi Narasimhaswamy temple.

The trek is divided into three main sections, each with its own unique challenges and rewards:

  • Sri Lakshmi Narasimhaswamy Temple to Rocky Section: This section is a light ascent till you reach the base of the hill. It’s a pleasant 10 to 15-minute walk that always serves as a great warm-up for the journey ahead.
  • Rocky Section to Fort Wall I: This is where the real challenge begins. The path becomes steeper and demands a good level of fitness. I’ve found that a steady pace can get you through this section in about 20-25 minutes.
  • Fort Wall I to Nandi Temple (Summit) via Fort Wall II: The final stretch of the trek is the most demanding, but also the most rewarding. The trail transitions into a rocky cave structure and then into a muddy trail right until you reach the top. It’s a tough hour-long walk, but the view from the top makes it all worth it.

From the lush green forests to the sparkling reservoirs and the distant villages of Ramanagara and Magadi, the view from the summit is a sight I look forward to every time I embark on this trek.

Best Time to Visit Savandurga Hills

Having done the Savandurga Hills Trek multiple times, I can confidently say that the best time to undertake this journey is between the end of September to February .

The summer heat can make the rocks unbearable, and the monsoons can make the trail slippery and dangerous.

Savandurga Hills Trekking Essentials:

Make sure you are prepared for the Savandurga Hills Trek. Here are my recommendation:

  • Appropriate Footwear : You need shoes with rugged grip and a robust sole that can withstand the terrain. Test your shoes on the rock surface before beginning your climb. Also, avoid climbing in wet weather as the rocks can become slippery.
  • Comfortable Attire : Dress comfortably, considering the climate. In the early morning, warm clothes are advisable, while light-coloured, breathable fabric is best for a post-sunrise climb. Gloves can be helpful too.
  • Assess Your Fitness Level : Take your time and pace yourself. This is not a race. The incline can be daunting, and it’s easy to lose your breath if you rush. It’s important to remember that the same trek back awaits you after reaching the top.
  • Travel Light : Carry minimal supplies during the day. Vendors sell water and snacks on the way up, but it might cost you a bit more.
  • Follow the Arrows : The trail is well-marked on Google Maps. Stick to the path, and if something seems too risky, it probably is.

Savandurga Hills Trekking Tips:

Here are some handy tips for your Savandurga Hills Trekking journey:

  • The Climb is Divisible : The trek can be divided into three stages. The initial climb to the fort is relatively easy, but the final part of this stage has a very steep incline. Take it slow and steady. The climb beyond the fort, to the artificial lakes and hut-like structure, is a bit steep and long but manageable. Finally, the hardest part is the climb till Nandi. It involves traversing through fallen boulders and bare rocks and can be quite the adrenaline rush.
  • Ideal Time to Visit : Early morning is the best time to start your trek, both to avoid the hot sun and to catch a glimpse of the awe-inspiring sunrise. Avoid trekking here during the rainy season as the plain rock surface becomes extremely slippery.
  • Who Should Avoid This Trek : This trek is not recommended for the elderly or very young children due to the difficulty level. The entire hill is composed of hard, plain rocks, which can get unbearably hot after noon.
  • Food Provisions on the Hill : There are several shops at the base of the mountain and a few sellers at the top who offer drinks and snacks . However, prepare to pay double the usual price. You can try the chat sold near the peak for a reasonable 50rs.

Savandurga Hills Parking

There is paid parking available at the bottom of the Savandurga Hills. I have paid Rs 40 for my 4 wheeler. 2 wheeler parking costs Rs 20. Make sure to reach early to get an assured parking spot.

Final Thoughts on Savandurga Hills Trek

The Savandurga trek is an adventure that I find myself returning to time and again.

The unique experience of trekking on a monolith, coupled with the panoramic views from the top, never fails to leave me in awe. Whether you’re a seasoned trekker or a beginner, this trek is sure to offer unforgettable memories and a sense of accomplishment.

Savandurga – An awesome trekking experience

Photo of My adventure planet

Things to note if you are going for trekking to Savandurga,

  • Use a shoe with good grip
  • Keep food (energy bar, energy drinks, snacks) and water in your backpack.
  • Keep a torch if you are planning a night trekking
  • Follow the yellow marks or electric post, or else you may get lost on the hill

Indiranagar

We were planning for this trip from long time, first we planned it on Diwali but it got cancelled due to heavy rain. After two weeks we finally managed everything, we started at early morning 4.30 am from Indiranagar (Bangalore). Thumping sound of royal Enfield and the cold whether at morning refreshed us We took the Mysore highway and taking a small cut road at right which pass through Kumbalgodu state forest was exciting but bit scary at early morning because we couldn't find more than one or two vehicle in our entire trip. Then we reach savandurga- Manchnabele road by taking a left, on the way we saw the beautiful view of Manchnabele dam. Then through magadi-Ramanagara road and then savandurga road which passes through savandurga state forest we reach our destination.

Savandurga which is considered as the largest monolith hills in Asia was giving us a delightful view from the down. There is a Veerabhadraswamy temple situated at the foot of the hill. we parked our bike there near by and started climbing right away. But the way we choose was hard and steep so we went back and find out there is a better way which are marked with yellow paint which is very difficult to notice at low light.

After few steps itself we find out that it is not going to be an easy task, your shoes should have good grip. In some places slope is almost 80°, we have to do spider crawl. There are the remains of the fort build by kempegowda on the top of the hill as well as on the way were you can take rest in between trekking. We didn't get much exhausted as we were taking pics and videos of the mesmerizing views around in every 10-15 minutes.

Savanadurga Hill

As we go up the view was getting better, it was almost 7 but still we can't see sun, sky was cloudy and it was like gonna rain anytime. we know that it will be pretty difficult to climb up or go down if it rains that was sure, because there are small line of water which was overflowing from the small water bodies at the top of the hill, more than twice we accidentally step over those lines and we immediately lost the grip. How much grip your shoes have it is not gonna rescue you if the surface is having water, the slope was like that only. We took little rest in the remains of the fort in between climbing. Finally we reach the place were this steep slope ends, there was some small and big water bodies which are made for water supply in the fort and it's premises. There are some fort remains too, and there is a small first through which we have to travel to reach tallest part of the hill. We lost our way through the forest also because there was not enough light to find out the yellow markings. But we reached the second tallest point of hill from where we can see the tallest part of the hill where a nandi temple also was located. After that we pass through some naturally made caves and steep slopes we reach the top. Believe me the first view of the location will make your heart filled, it such an amazing view from there. The cold wind and the cloudy sky made it more beautiful. We spend a little time there capturing all the views in camera and then we opened our backpack and had our break fast. For keeping our back pack light weight we carried only some energy bars, brown bread, peanut butter and some water. Then we started climbing down, it was easier and more risky. Because chances for slipping was more. But finally we reached safely down, thank god it didn't rain. We really enjoyed the trekking. All the adrenalin pumping we wanted, savandurga gave us.

On the way back we stopped in front of Manchnabele dam and enjoyed the view. As it was raining from past few days the authorities didn't give access to enter the dam premises. we have to get satisfied by seeing it from outside.

We went to the location of BIG BANYAN TREE, which was one the way. First time I am seeing such a big banyan tree, it was spread over a kilometer. I tried to find out the mother tree but couldn't, from locals I got to know that it got destroyed by some disease or thunderstorm. Then finally we reach our room which is located in Indiranagar (Bangalore) at about 1pm and that trip was worth every penny.

Savandurga Trek – Trek on the Largest Monolith Hills of Asia

September 30, 2017 by madur

Savandurga trek trail is an adventure buffs paradise. The hill of Savandurga (Savanadurga) lies off Magadi Road, 60 kilometres west of Bangalore, Karnataka. Being 1226 metres above sea level, it is believed to be one of the biggest monolith hills of Asia. It is formed by two hills, the black hill or Karigudda and white hill or Biligudda. The place is ideal for trekking.

Savandurga Trek

Savandurga. Image courtesy: Shyamal

The Sanskrit word Saavana means three times ritual. The hill lies in the lap of nature. Covered with scrubs and deciduous trees, one can easily spot yellow throat bulbuls, while sloth bear and leopards can be found in some parts. Earlier, there were no steps that led to the top of the hills. It used to be covered extensively by bamboo trees. Spend some time picnicking at the foothills of Savandurga. You can also indulge in rock climbing or cave exploration.  Let’s know more about Savanadurga trek.

Savandurga Trek Trails

Savandurga trek is not very difficult. The hill has gentle slopes that can be trekked by a novice as well. Most of the trekking routes lie on the southern side of the monolith, ranging from 700-950 feet of technical climbs. The trek is composed of hard-core trekking coupled with sports. Owing to its location, the rock gets quite hot when the sun is right on top. Nevertheless, it is meant for adventure enthusiasts and thrill seekers.

When on Savandurga trek, trekking uphill leads to a fortress built by Kempe Gowda II. The fortress was later occupied by Tipu Sultan . Yellow lines mark the trail of Niligudda; however, they are missing and can get quite confusing at Karigudda. It is 2 kilometres trek one way and can be done over a day. During the rainy season, however, it could get quite challenging and must be avoided. Be sure to take all the precautions when setting out on Savanadurga trek.

Manchanabele Dam: This dam is situated close to Savanadurga and offers a variety of water sports.

Temples: There are two main places of worship on these hills. The one on the foothills is that of Sri Savandi Veerabhadraswamy and the other is of Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy with an idol of Lord Narasimha.

How to Reach Savanadurga

The closest airport to Savanadurga is Kempegowda International Airport which is just 90 kilometres.

The best option is to reach Magadi by train. The railway station is barely 12 kilometres away from the hill.

Savandurga hill is considered to be among the largest monolith hills in Asia. Named Savandurga by Immadi Kempe Gauda, this hill fortress was believed to be unconquerable until the British took over in 1791; Lord Cornwallis has written a detailed account of its capture.

The hill looks imposing as one drives closer to it and it is easy to understand why it is called the ‘rock of death.’ The Nandi mantap looks like a small square on top and all visible sides of the rock look steep and dangerous; only upon reaching the base does one see the rock’s gentle slopes.

About Place: Savandurga is a place with a fort on a lofty mountain, about 60 km from Bengaluru. The hill consists of two granite cliffs of 4000 feet tall and 13 kilometers (8 miles) in circumference , one called Bilibetta or white peak, another Karibetta or black peak.

It was a prominent place during the Hoysala rule. Over a period of time several rulers held this place. The hill fort on the top of the outcrop was erected in 1543 by Samanta Raya. It then came to Immadi Kempe Gowda of Bengaluru until 1728 when it was captured by the Raja of Mysore from whom it passed to Haider Ali. During the Anglo-Mysore Wars of the late 18th century, Savandurga was the most forbidding of all the Tippu's hill forts in the area and hitherto deemed impregnable. Nevertheless, British troops under Cornwallis commanded by Lt Col Stuart mounted a successful assault against the fort in December 21, 1791.

The entire area is covered by verdure and serene atmosphere. This region is famous for medicinal plants and shrub forest. This is a paradise for the climbing enthusiasts. Climbers can scale sheer rock faces enduring up to grade 7. It is also good for a day's trek and camping at the foothill.
