Snowmobiling

Snowmobiling, or “sledding” as it’s often called in Vermont, has been a favorite winter pastime for over 40 years. Vermont has more than 5,000 miles of well-marked and beautifully maintained trails on both public and private land throughout the state. Trails skirt up the flanks of the rugged green mountains. They whoosh through agricultural land buried deep under winter snow. And they wind through pristine forest creeping over mountain passes and connecting communities. A hundred and twenty groomers keep the network in top condition all winter. They’re operated by the Vermont Association of Snow Travelers (VAST) and its local clubs. Most of the groomers are GPS enabled, so sledders can get current conditions reports, all on an interactive map on VAST’s website. Bring your own sled and explore northern hardwood forests, frosty river basins, rolling farmland, and fourth class roads within 15 minutes of Burlington.

4 Fun Snowmobile Tours near Okemo, Vermont

Posted December 21, 2022

Vermont has 5,000 miles of snowmobile trails that take riders up and out of the mountains, through wooded forests and over lakes through state and private land.

Two Adults Admiring View from Fire Tower at Summit at Okemo

Vermont has some of the world’s best snowmobiling adventures, with jaw-dropping scenery everywhere you look. Thanks to the work of the many chapter members of the Vermont Association of Snow Travelers (VAST), there are more than 5,000 miles of groomed trails in the snowmobile network, all of which are well-maintained by local clubs. The trails system has been around since 1967, and many trails open in mid-December, after hunting season and stay open until mid-April.

The Okemo Valley is no exception, snowmobiling is one of the best ways to see the state up close and a great way to explore the state after a day of skiing or riding. Many trails go through village centers, with opportune spots to break for lunch. Riders will notice that being in the winter, the leafless forests open huge vistas, giving a different experience of the landscape. If you are looking for a unique and fun family winter experience, snowmobiling tours in Okemo ride through the woods and on groomed ski trails to explore the areas around the resort.

For many snowmobile tours in Vermont, experienced guides are available to help riders feel confident on the trails. Riders should come dressed and prepared for winter conditions. Helmets are available at rental areas.

Four great snowmobile adventures in central and southern Vermont

Snowcountry snowmobile.

Snowcountry Snowmobile in Proctorsville , about four miles from Okemo, is one of the few operators that allows riders to rent their own snowmobiles for a half-day or full-day. There are also one-hour or two-hour guided tour options available. Owner Brian Villa says, “Some who rent snowmobiles without a guide choose to visit historic towns like Woodstock or Weston for lunch. Traveling to Rumuntos on the Long Trail in Bridgewater and through Calvin Coolidge State Forest in Plymouth are also popular options. You go all through the mountains."

Villa offers a quick course on snowmobile riding and then lets riders explore on their own or go with him or another guide. “If we go north, I go up to the scenic view that overlooks Okemo and then we go through Colby Pond and down south on the power lines,” he says. Snowcountry also offers storage options for those with their own snowmobiles with monthly and yearly rates.

Snowmobile Vermont - Okemo

Snowmobile Vermont , located about 16 miles from Okemo, has two tour options: a shorter one goes on straight, wooded terrain, and the other two-hour tour traverses old ski trails. The longer tour explores the area around Plymouth and the Calvin Coolidge State Forest.

The two-hour guided backcountry tour through Calvin Coolidge State Forest encompasses “twisty, windy stuff through the woods” as well as straightaways and open meadows, says tour guide Max Rowe. You might come across old stone walls and the remnants of buildings that belonged to early settlers in Vermont. The tour on old ski trails in Killington is “more mountainous and up and down as opposed to out and away,” he says.

Children of all ages are welcome, though the tour guide suggests children be at least 5 years old. Drivers have to be at least 16 years old to ride by themselves or 18 to take another person with them. Helmets with shields are available as well as a complete demonstration before the tour begins “We can accommodate large groups and we can accommodate small groups,” Rowe says, explaining all tours are tailored to individuals. There are also breaks to check out the mountain views.

Snowmobile Vermont - Mount Snow

Jeff Wasielewski, who has been a tour guide in the Mount Snow area , about 45 minutes from Okemo, says for him, snowmobiling is about the “peace of being out in fresh snow in the middle of the woods, the smell of two-stroke and the wind in my face.” Wasielewski can accommodate groups of any size and ability level. “In two hours, we can cover anywhere from five miles because people don’t want to go far or up to 40 miles,” Wasielewski says. “We can go anywhere we can get to and home in our time span.” Some tours go to a reservoir, some go out in the woods and to the Stratton Mountain area. “You’re going to be in a mostly wooded trail system, with roughly 35-foot wide trails, some 15 feet and going through the Green Mountain National Forest,” Wasielewski says. There are occasionally open fields and a lake to traverse if it’s frozen enough.

Wasielewski advises that inexperienced riders pick a time at the beginning of the day for an easier, smoother ride as the trails get bumpier later in the day. Some tours go as late as 8 p.m. “It changes the whole atmosphere going into darkness,” Wasielewski says. The speed limit on the trails is 35 miles per hour, though the speed in the tour is dictated by ability levels. “It depends on how confident the people are,” he says. Sometimes riders decide they don’t want to drive at all and feel more comfortable riding with a tour guide. “In those circumstances, we coach them, and if they still don’t want to, then they can ride with us,” he says.

Stratton Adventures

For kids, Stratton Adventures has mini snowmobiles and easy trails for young riders to explore. Children as young as 6 and weighing up to 100 pounds can go on their own for a 10-to-25-minute tour with a tour guide. Stratton Adventures also has snowmobile tours for adults. Up to five snowmobiles (10 guests) are permitted per time slot. For those seeking a longer tour, Stratton Adventures’ Vermont Mountain Adventures has two-hour backcountry tours located near Bromley, about 24 miles from Okemo, with stunning views of the mountains. There are places along the way to stop for photo opportunities with fun for the whole family.

8 Tips for Your Vermont Snowmobile Tour

Winter Snow Mobile Tours in Vermont

Headed to the Green Mountains? Grab a throttle full of adventure with a Vermont Snowmobile Tour at Stratton Mountain Resort. Stratton offers 1 hour guided Snowmobile Tours that depart 3 times a night; 4:45pm, 6pm, and 7:15pm. Each tour has room for up to 6 snowmobiles or 12 people if you are riding tandem. All reservations can be made through stratton.com , and as an extra helping hand, we are here to share with you tips and tricks to help begin your adventure. Let’s get started!

1. Snowmobile Tours Meet at Sun Bowl Base Area

Unless you are told otherwise by staff, the Sun Bowl base area is the meeting spot for all tours. Tours may meet in the main base area in the early parts of the season (December and January) so please take time to confirm your check-in location on the Snowmobiles webpage on stratton.com , or your confirmation email on the day of your outing.

2. Passengers Are Allowed

While all drivers must be 18 years old AND have a valid Driver’s License to operate a snowmobile (Learners’ Permits are not accepted) passengers only need to be 10 years of age or older, still allowing for a family fun-filled adventure that we’re all seeking! Each snowmobile is fully equipped to comfortably carry a passenger.

3. Private Groups Can Be Accommodated

If you are looking to go on a tour with the whole family, no worries! We love to help our guests to give them the best overall experience. Just send an email to [email protected] and we will help you set it up!

4. We Ride No Matter The Weather

We send out our tours daily starting December 17 to March 31. As long as the mountain has a sufficient base depth and the conditions are approved for riding, there will be snowmobiling! If for whatever reason the weather creates unsafe riding conditions, you will be notified about the cancellation and provided with a refund or new tour date.

5. Helmets Are Provided

The most important thing for us is the safety of our guests. Upon arrival at the tour meeting point, each guest will be provided with a DOT-certified full-face helmet to wear. Various sizes are available for the best fit for all drivers and passengers. All helmets have eye shields to allow for easy visibility in snowy conditions.

6. Ski Boots Are Not Allowed On Tours

Whether you are operating a snowmobile or riding as a passenger, you need the correct shoes to ride. If you come wearing ski boats the guides will not allow you to ride. This is for the safety of all guests. Winter boots, work boots, and snowboard boots are all permitted on each snowmobile tour.

7. Start Slow Before We Go

Before we begin any tour, each guest will be required to watch a safety video at the time of check-in. We also offer a snowmobile damage protection fee of $30. This provides you with security in case the snowmobile you are operating gets damaged during the tour. All drivers will then learn the controls of each snowmobile, how to operate and drive, and then make a few laps around the main base area before heading up the mountain. No prior snowmobile experience is required to schedule a snowmobile tour! We will teach you how it is done.

8. Have Fun!

Tours are meant to be a fun-filled adventure for everyone to enjoy. Depending on your comfort, our guides will adjust speeds and breaks for you. Whether you are an adrenaline junkie or leisure rider, this is your tour, so enjoy it, and get those snaps at the summit for your Instagram!

How to schedule a Vermont snowmobile tour at Stratton:

Head to the website by using this Vermont Snowmobile Tours link

If you’re looking for other fun winter activities , including Ice Skating, Snow Tubing, Cross-country Skiing, Fat Biking and much more, look here too!

Once on the Snowmobile Tours page, feel free to scroll through and look over the information. After reading over the information, your next step is to sign-up for a tour!

Locate the booking bar labeled “See Availability”. Next to that is a tab labeled “Date”. Click the date drop-down and select a day of the week or month you are interested in for a tour.

Select a date and a list of times will pop up to show you snowmobile tour availability. Add the time to your cart and begin the payment process. Within the payment process, a couple of items will be available to you. The first is an option to add a passenger and the second is the snowmobile damage protection fee. Both are not mandatory for the tour, but they are available if you are interested.

After everything is booked sit back and get ready to ride. Tours will meet in the Main Base Area unless otherwise notified. Please arrive 15 min before your tour time (check-in times are listed on the Snowmobile Tour webpage) to get fitted for your helmet and watch the safety video.

Time to ride!
