And that’s just for starters.

Just a two-hour drive southwest of the GTA, Norfolk County is brimming with unique experiences you won’t find elsewhere.

Known as “Ontario’s Garden” for its plentiful agricultural produce, the Norfolk region has become a popular farm-to-table culinary destination. Moreover, its beautiful Lake Erie coastal towns host numerous intimate indoor and outdoor concerts, art shops and various festivals throughout the year.

No other destination will allow you to visit a raptor conservancy, paddle and jet ski off the sandy beaches of Lake Erie, and still find that perfect camping or glamping spot. A diverse range of summer adventures are waiting for you. In fact, the only thing Norfolk County doesn’t have is overwhelming crowds.

“Our region truly offers a unique, friendly brand of hospitality where you can discover the natural beauty of our biosphere destinations, extensive trail system, intimate hamlets and destination attractions,” says Wand Heimbecker, co-owner of Wilsonville’s Whistling Gardens, an internationally recognized private botanical garden displaying more than 4500 different plants.

Here’s your guide to the most compelling attractions of Norfolk County.

A UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve

Located on the north shore of Lake Erie, the Long Point Biosphere Region has Canada’s greatest number of plant and animal species. There are 19 stunning sites that showcase the biosphere while ensuring environmentally sensitive areas are protected. From the black bridge in Waterford, you can spot eagles, beavers, turtles, wild turkeys, foxes and coyotes from viewing platforms set along the Black Bridge-Waterford Heritage Trail.

You can also climb giant sand dunes for spectacular views of Lake Erie at Sand Hill Park, cycle or hike along the beautiful historical pathways, or paddle down Big Creek, dubbed ‘Canada’s Amazon’ for its richness of flora and fauna. Trails through the old-growth forests that make up the incredible natural oasis known as Backus Woods, a heritage conservation area deep in Canada’s only Carolinian Forest, are also ideal for hiking and biking.

“The reserve allows you to experience the abundance of nature and celebrate the human spirit —all in one great place, says Long Point Eco-Adventures co-owner, Mike McArthur. “Flying through the forest canopy on a zipline line tour, stargazing at night, enjoying locally sourced great wines and foods, or glamping with friends and a good book — the vibe here will etch itself upon you and your memories now and years ahead.”

Authentic farm-to-table freshness

At one of the region’s visitor-friendly farms and orchards, you can stroll through aromatic lavender, ginseng and berry farms or enjoy a meal picked and prepared the same day using garden-fresh ingredients.

Farmers’ markets are also popular, with some offering delicious meals showcasing fresh, local ingredients from participating vendors. And many of the region’s family-owned and operated restaurants offer classic casual and gourmet fare prepared with local and seasonal ingredients and unique menus that follow the harvest cycle.

Exceptional wineries and breweries

Blessed with a temperate climate and superb soil quality, Norfolk County offers excellent growing conditions for grapes. Here, you can sample award-winning grape and fruit vintages and a variety of ciders at local winery estate and vineyard tastings throughout the County while enjoying the natural beauty of the surrounding countryside.

Local breweries also focus on fresh produce and offer special seasonal menus paired with crafted brews that honour Norfolk County’s agricultural heritage.

Historical and cultural treasures

Norfolk County is home to countless stories that helped shape Canada. Today, its vibrant arts, culture, and heritage communities feature many museums, visual and performing arts venues, the historic Alligator Tug and more.

History is also displayed at pioneer schoolhouses and mills, fishing museums and agricultural museums. At Port Dover’s Harbour Museum, you can learn about the fascinating history of the commercial fishing industry of Lake Erie, and Canada’s only tobacco museum in Delhi explains this unique agricultural crop and its influence on the multicultural development of Norfolk County – close to home, far from ordinary.

Not far away but far from ordinary, Norfolk County promises a superb getaway choice if you are looking to relax, unwind and immerse yourself in the abundance of nature this summer — all in one great destination.

Up the Garden Path: A visit to Norfolk County, Ontario’s Garden

norfolk tourism.ca

There are three themes that run through the narratives of Southwestern Ontario: tradition, passion, and community. They are recurring motifs that can guide us to a more interesting understanding of the places we visit, the people we meet, and the food and drink that we discover. They’re all apparent in Norfolk County.

Norfolk County was probably an ideal region in which to develop culinary tourism, but the confluence of changing times and economic upheaval hastened the process.

norfolk tourism.ca

The county’s tourism industry was built on its Lake Erie coastline — beaches, fishing, boating, camping. Adding culinary tourism was a calculated decision implemented with the guidance of both provincial and local governments. That the results have been so successful is largely due to the community of farmers, producers, retailers and restaurateurs, and their friends, families, and neighbours.

norfolk tourism.ca

Tourism has contributed to the economy of Norfolk County since the 1920s, when beaches like this, at Port Dover, attracted summer visitors

norfolk tourism.ca

Wholesome Pickins offers lots more than strawberries, but now is the season. Dave VandeVelde shows off some of the current crop.

The VandeVelde farm on the outskirts of Delhi was once dedicated to tobacco. Today Jenn and Dave and their children, the fourth and fifth generations on the farm, still plant it on some oftheir 100 acres, but their main business is Wholesome Pickins Market where they sell strawberries (seven varieties) and raspberries from their own farm, as well as a range of Norfolk County products from cheese (Jensen’s) to nuts (Kernal Peanuts). The darkened beams of the old tobacco barn are still visible in the converted shop, but the gleaming kitchen is a new addition. Here Aunt Linda has put her own passion into the business and makes pies, tarts and other baked goods. The VandeVeldes take obvious pleasure and pride in supporting their friends and neighbours. As elsewhere in the county, that road runs both ways.

norfolk tourism.ca

Carrie Woolley’s sheep live outdoors year-round, in the pasture or grazing in the orchard.

After completing studies at the University of Guelph, sixth-generation farmer Carrie Woolley joined forces, and life, with her neighbour Brett Schuyler. The Schuyler family farm produces apples, sour cherries, grains and oil seeds. And now grass-fed lamb. Both Carrie and Brett are advocates of land conservation and sustainable agriculture. Watched over by their guardian dogs, the sheep never see the inside of a barn. Spring and summer are spent in the pastures. After the fruit harvest they graze in the orchards, working as natural lawnmowers. Woolley’s Lamb can be enjoyed in restaurants from Simcoe to Niagara-on-the-Lake, or purchased from the farm and at VG Meats and The Apple Place.

The hospitable Norfolk soil has welcomed two crops that have not been part of the agricultural tradition; hops and grapes are playing roles in both the economy and tourism.

norfolk tourism.ca

John Picard, below, owner of Ramblin’ Road Brewery Farm, serves up some craft beer in the tasting area. (Photo Norfolk Tourism)

The Picard family has transitioned over time from tobacco, to corn and soy, to peanuts. Since 2006 hops have been added to the mix. After some years spent developing Picard’s Incredible Snack Food Company (the products are sold across Ontario) John Picard’s fancy turned to thoughts of beer. Today Ramblin’ Road Brewery Farm in La Salette produces small batch craft beers. The brewery has become an attraction: tours of the facility are offered; beers are available to enjoy while visiting or to take home; there’s a dining room (great burgers!); and the new patio should be opening soon. The farm also produces potatoes — Dakota Pearls. They’re used in the brewing of Dakota Pearl Ale, and in the kettle chips that are made on site and available in the store.

norfolk tourism.ca

Sample some Belgian-style beer at New Limburg Brewing Co., in the former Nixon school building.

The newest microbrewery in Norfolk is housed in an old school building in the town of Nixon, between Delhi and Simcoe. New Limburg Brewing Co. is a family affair. These Belgians (Jo Geven, Mischa Geven and Yvonne Moonen) craft Belgian-style ales that you can enjoy either indoors or on the patio, relaxing in the rural surroundings. Belgians have been settling in Norfolk County for a few generations now, but they’re not the only ones discovering the pleasures of New Limburg’s output. All beers are available for sale at the brewery, along with specialty beer glasses and other items. Yvonne is both administrator and resident artist, responsible for the stunning label designs.

Norfolk County is one of Ontario’s emerging wine regions, and gaining a reputation for bold wines. It is home to about half a dozen wineries, some of which also produce fruit wines or ciders.

norfolk tourism.ca

The view from the terrace at Burning Kiln Winery, looking towards Lake Erie (Photo Norfolk Tourism)

Burning Kiln Winery, overlooking Long Point Bay, is another producer with roots in tobacco country. The old pack barn has been restyled and houses the winemaking equipment, a retail area, tasting bar, and in the midst of it all, a dining and entertainment area — where, if you time it right, you might be lucky enough to hear local powerhouse Felicia McMinn, or another of Norfolk’s homegrown musicians. In the gourmet food truck Chef Scott McRae of David’s Restaurant prepares appetizers and meals from local foods, including Woolley’s lamb and Lake Erie perch, that pair with Burning Kilns wines. These wines are winning acclaim — and awards — both at home and internationally.

If your schedule precludes visiting the sources of Norfolk County’s bounty, you can cheat! From coffee shops to fine dining restaurants, you can sample the goods.

Owner Heather Pond ensures that good food, fresh beer, warm hospitality, and a casual friendly atmosphere await you at The Blue Elephant.

For 25 years Heather Pond has been serving diners from Simcoe and around the region, and in 2012 she opened the taps to serve beers from an on-site microbrewery. The menu at The Blue Elephant Craft Brew House is extensive, and includes Thai cuisine as well as lots of traditional pub food and comfort fare, all with local Norfolk flavour. (The website provides a list of local suppliers.) Heather is proud of the food, and of the brewery’s output (crafted in small batches using local organic barley, wheat, hops and pure water, with no additives or preservatives) but she’s no snob. If you want to “just say OV” go right ahead. The historic building maintains many original features, offers numerous dining and drinking areas, including front and back patios, and the recently opened “Shed” — an old outbuilding that now draws one in with retro décor and comfortable kitsch.

At The Combine, sourcing locally begins in the garden behind the restaurant, here being prepared for spring planting.

You can take the boy out of the country… but you can’t always keep him out. Ryan Rivard, like many from Norfolk County, went far afield (for about twenty years in his case), and then came back home to Simcoe. (Five of those years he spent as chef and co-owner of The Bison, in Banff.) In 2013, with his wife Jennifer von Schleinitz, Rivard opened The Combine, which quickly proceeded to garner accolades from diners near and far. Sourcing locally at this restaurant begins in the back garden and extends across the county, taking in Lake Erie fish, Woolley’s lamb, Y U Ranch longhorn grass-fed beef, and the best of Norfolk’s vegetables, fruits and other products. This is satisfying and completely delicious food, and one of the most honest approaches to “local and seasonal” to be found in our region. The attitudes and processes are supported and embraced by customers, and by the staff which includes chef Marcus Myerscough and sous chef Robynne Hubert, as well as front of house team members Mykel and Amanda (who does double duty in the garden and greenhouse, as well as running her own CSA, called Sweet Pea). Jennifer’s background in the business, including time as The Drake’s Director of Food and Beverage, makes her the perfect “food and libation loving hospitality gal.” The beer and wine lists are not limited to but lean heavily towards the hops and grapes of Norfolk County producers. The enticing cocktail list also brings in local flavours, and shows not bravado, but experience. Rest assured, there is nothing pretentious about The Combine. The fact that its owners live upstairs is not the only reason you’ll feel right at home here.

Culverdene House, a bed and breakfast just outside Simcoe

No matter how fine the pedigree, every community, like every family, needs fresh blood. Among those who have come from away and chosen to take up the Norfolk County life are Joyce and Roger Humbert of Culverdene House, an 1840s home that is now a bed and breakfast, in beautiful rural surroundings just outside Simcoe. They arrived five years ago, bringing their passions — jazz percussion (Joyce) and photography (Roger) — along with a penchant for hospitality. They’ve embraced their new community — and vice versa.

norfolk tourism.ca

Lago Trattoria in Port Dover opened last year, on Canada Day. It’s from the same people who make The Combine such a great place to dine, and the focus here is also on fresh and made-from-scratch food, sourced locally as much as possible — with an Italian accent. Finish your meal with a glass of limoncello, made in-house.

If the road home takes you north of Simcoe — or if you don’t mind a very worthwhile detour — stop at Townsend Butchers. This family business sells locally raised meats fresh, frozen, and smoked. They are purveyors to a number of area restaurants (and to Culverdene House, where you’ll find some very tasty bacon on the breakfast table).

Some never leave the county. Some do, and come home again. Some arrive from other places, other backgrounds. They all pick up the reins of tradition, perhaps tread new paths. They do it to live and they do it with love. They’re a community, and they’ll happily draw you into it.

There’s lots more to do and see in Norfolk County — more breweries and wineries and restaurants, farmers’ market and farmgates, beaches, campsites (and glampsites!), biking trails and hiking trails, great places to stay, and events year ‘round. You can find details on the Norfolk County Tourism website: www.norfolktourism.ca. Happy trails!

Inside Business | Virginia Beach-based J&A Racing’s events attract millions in tourism dollars for city’s economy, organizers say

Jerry and Amy Frostick, the J and A behind J&A Racing, started their business in 2003, the same year they took over the Shamrock Marathon. Their portfolio has grown to include eight other events in Hampton Roads. (Courtesy of J&A Racing)

The St. Patrick’s Day tradition includes a 26.2-mile marathon and a half-marathon, an 8K, kids’ one-mile race, fitness expo and a host of activities for runners and onlookers. More than 20,000 runners and spectators from all 50 states and 16 countries came out to the 52nd annual event March 15-17, bringing in $22 million in economic impact to the city, the organizers said.

“We’re so blessed to have the communities that come out to cheer on the runners — the entire city gets behind it,” organizer Amy Frostick said of the Shamrock. “I feel like everybody deserves a medal that weekend.”

Nancy Helman, director of the Virginia Beach Convention & Visitors Bureau, said in a news release that the city is grateful for J&A Racing’s partnership.

“They produce events throughout the year that boost not only the city’s economy, but spirit, too,” she said.

The Shamrock is just one of many running events organized in Hampton Roads by Jerry and Amy Frostick — the J&A behind the name of the Virginia Beach-based race management company. They hired Scott Minto, director of the Sports Master of Business Administration program at San Diego State University, to study the race’s economic impact.

The couple, who met through their shared love of running, have put in years of blood, sweat and tears to propel their business’s continued growth since its founding in 2003 — the same year they took over the Shamrock.

Their race portfolio has also grown to include eight other events: ADP Corporate 5K; Getem Services Big Blue 5K; Crawlin’ Crab Half Marathon and 5K; Old Point National Bank Wicked 10K; Chartway Norfolk Harbor Half Marathon, 10K and 5K; BayPort Credit Union Surf-N-Santa 5 Miler; Sun Up to Sun Down 50K; and the new Chartway Virginia Beach 10 Miler and 5K.

This year's Yuengling Shamrock Marathon brought more than 20,000 runners and spectators from all 50 states and 16 countries to Virginia Beach for the annual mid-March weekend of running festivities. (Courtesy of J&A Racing)

Each one of these races brings participants and their families and friends to the area who spend money at local hotels, restaurants and stores. For instance, the business said more than 14,700 hotel room nights were booked at the Oceanfront for this year’s Shamrock.

“We are proud to host an event that not only brings the community together but also supports our local businesses and economy,” the Frosticks said.

And they’re delighted that things have returned to pre-pandemic numbers and normalcy. Specializing in mass gatherings, the Frosticks said they did their best during the pandemic to focus on the positive and connect runners via virtual challenges uploaded online.

“The Shamrock was actually one of the first events in the country that had to be canceled,” Amy Frostick said.

In 2021, they organized a hybrid Shamrock, and by that fall, race events returned in full glory.

“We’re happy that chapter’s closed,” she said.

“But, it kind of recharged and recommitted us,” Jerry Frostick added.

They saw that new runners became attracted to the sport and were excited that people were looking for new ways to get and stay healthy — both physically and mentally. Celebration parties have become more of a festival than the typical medal at the finish line.

“Since we’ve been back, we’ve been focusing on creating experiences more than putting on ‘on your mark, get set, go’ races,” he said.

Jerry and Amy Frostick, co-owners of J&A Racing, met through running and have maintained their love of the lifestyle by helping others find the joy in it. (Courtesy of J&A Racing)

As for expanding beyond Hampton Roads, Jerry Frostick said they have been approached multiple times to create races in other regions of the country.

“We love where we live and I think what makes us special is the passion we have for where we live,” he said. “I don’t know that we could share that passion in other locations.”

He said they started out 23 years ago striving to be the best — not the biggest. He stressed that putting on running events in Hampton Roads is not work but rather what they love to do.

“The hugs, smiling faces, high-fives and tears at the finish line are what still drives us,” Jerry Frostick said.

Biden to announce new grants for cancer moonshot initiative.

President Joe Biden arrives at the White House.

Biden and first lady Jill Biden will take part in tours of medical facilities before heading to Tulane University to announce the $150 million in grants from the Advanced Research Agency for Health. The awards will go to eight teams of researchers around the country trying to identify ways for surgeons to have more success removing tumors for people who may have cancer.

Recipients for the awards include Tulane, Dartmouth College, Johns Hopkins University, Rice University, the University of California, San Francisco, the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, the University of Washington and Cision Vision in Mountain View, California.

Even though Biden decided to drop out of the presidential race and not seek a second term, he has made his cancer moonshot program a priority initiative for the months he has left in office. It is a highly personal issue for him, as his son Beau Biden died of brain cancer in 2015. Both Biden and the first lady have also had lesions removed from their skin in the past that were found to be a common form of cancer.

Cancer is the second leading cause of death for people in the U.S. behind heart disease. The American Cancer Society estimates that around 2 million new cancer cases will be diagnosed and nearly 612,000 people will die from cancer or related diseases.

Since launching the cancer moonshot initiative, the Biden administration has implemented several policy changes that have made screening and getting treatment for cancer more accessible and affordable, which advocates say has put the country on track to drastically reduce the number of deaths caused by the illness. Biden’s goal is to have the cancer death rate be cut by at least half by 2047.

Nice Cookies that will keep Good Three Months

Recipe by: Norfolk County Heritage and Culture Source: Nothing More Comforting: Canada’s Heritage Food by Dorothy Duncan

Ingredients

  • 9 cups flour
  • 3-1/2 cups butter
  • 5 cups sugar
  • Large coffee cup of water with a heaping teaspoon of pearlash (substitute baking soda) dissolved in it

Rub your butter and sugar into the flour, (add) great teaspoon of caraway (seeds).

This old recipe does not give directions, but I have learned from experience that it should be mixed well, small amounts rolled into a ball and flattened very thin on a buttered cookie sheet with a fork, and baked in a moderate oven of 350°F for about 10 minutes or until golden brown. The flavour of the caraway is unmistakable in them.

NOTE: These cookies do indeed keep for three months as long as they are kept in a dry cool place. Pearlash or potash (potassium carbonate) is a combination of wood ash and water boiled until all the liquid has evapourated. It was used historically (1790s to 1840s) as a leavening agent in baking.
