15 Places you need to visit in the Northeast U.S.

Though it’s easy to become entranced by popular attractions, the Northeastern U.S. is much more than the bright lights of New York City, the historic streets of Boston, or the popular national parks in Maine. Don’t get us wrong– these spots are widely known for a reason and deserve to be seen and explored. But, it’s worth knowing there are so many lesser known places to fall in love with in this region.  

From quaint towns, breathtaking foliage, nature trails, waterfalls, mountains, and beautiful bodies of water, the terrain and features of the Northeast are diverse. Take note of this list when planning your Northeast adventure and don’t overlook places that are off the beaten path!

Massachusetts

1.  frank knowles-little river reserve.

This serene wetland adventure features a 200-foot-long suspension bridge, an old farmhouse, and plenty of wooden boardwalks. There’s roughly 9 miles of hiking trails to meander!

2.  Menemsha Hills

You’ll be rewarded by stunning ocean views and the Elizabeth Islands in the distance on this vineyard hike. The seaside cliffs are breathtaking and you can take in this popular summer destination island from a whole new vantage point atop the hills.

3.  Nick’s Lake

This family-friendly hike is located in the central Adirondacks by the town of Old Forge. On this relatively flat 6.2-mile trail, you’ll catch glimpses of the peaceful waters of Nick's Lake. A campground on the property offers a beach, bathrooms, and kayak rentals if you decide to stay the night or longer.

4.  Pillsbury Mountain

This 3.3-mile up-and-back adventure leads to panoramic views of the surrounding mountain ranges and lakes from the top of a fire tower and a ranger station that is no longer in-use. If you're into fire towers, consider doing the Adirondack Fire Tower Hiking Challenge and checking this tower off your list!

5.  Carpenter and Angel Falls

Take yourself to the middle of a serene natural oasis on this three-mile loop! Carpenter Falls is roughly 95-feet tall, making for an impressive and photo-worthy sight. The rocks can be slippery, so be extra careful and use the ropes to assist with climbing.

Connecticut

6.  chauncey peak.

A 2.2-mile loop hike has endless views of the Giuffrida Park and town of Meridan below while at the top! Note that some of the trail markers aren’t very clear and there are a few unmarked trails. 7.  Sleeping Giant State Park

This three-mile out-and-back hike features charming wooded areas, a stone tower, and sweeping vistas. When you reach the top, be sure to explore different overlooks. On clear days, you can see all the way to the Long Island Sound. Find a private spot and sit down to take a rest or enjoy lunch with friends. This is also a great place for bouldering.

8.  Moss Glen Falls

This beautiful waterfall is located right along the scenic Route 100 - just .1 miles off the road. There’s a large parking area, making it super easy to take a quick pitstop to enjoy and photograph the falls. Go during Autumn to experience the beautiful foliage in the area!

New Hampshire

9.  mt. moosilauke.

Explore Benton State Forest while admiring the magnificent forest and mountain scenery along the way during this 7.1-mile loop hike. During the spring and summer, there are beautiful wildflowers along the way. There are several river crossings with bridges, and you can take dips to cool off during the hot summer months.

Rhode Island

10.  beavertail state park.

On the island of Jamestown, soak in true New England coastal beauty at Beavertail State Park. Explore the secluded cove beaches and stay for sunrise or sunset for an especially memorable experience. This park (and its short, dirt trails) is the perfect alternative to overcrowded beaches. There are plenty of nooks to discover and marvel in at this beautiful island state park. Don't be tempted to jump off the cliffs into the water below as it's full of jagged, dangerous rocks. Instead, follow the paths that lead down the cliffs to the beaches where you can swim without the dangers of diving.

11.  Borestone Mountain

This scenic 3.6-mile out-and-back trail is at the base of the 100 Mile Wilderness, part of the Appalachian Trail. Breathe in the fresh air and take in impressive views overlooking the surrounding mountains and lakes at the top. Colorful treetops in the autumn seem to go on forever. Note: there is an entry fee collected at the visitor center located one mile into the hike. Make sure to bring cash!

12.  Rocky Pond

Immerse yourself in the remote mountains of Northern Maine while avoiding large crowds on this one-mile out-and-back hike.The mountain views from Rocky Pond are breathtaking! Be on the lookout for moose along the shorelines - they like to eat and drink here!

13.  The Cranberry Bogs at Double Tree State Park

Before entering Double Trouble Park, you’ll pass by Double Trouble Historic Village, which features old schoolhouses, general stores, sawmills, and cottages dating back to the 1700s to 1900s. Stretch your legs by heading to the park to walk a 1.9-mile nearly flat loop trail through cranberry bogs and forest. Locals harvest tart, sweet cranberries here every year and you can purchase cranberry goods at the village shops.

Pennsylvania

14.  mill creek falls.

Visiting this easily accessible waterfall is the perfect way to get a quick nature fix and enjoy the natural beauty of this photo-worthy spot. After enjoying the falls, take a two-mile loop hike through the woods to admire glimpses of the Susquehanna River.

15.  Rose Valley Lake

Anglers should explore this pristine area in all seasons! The man-made lake is perfect for bass, bluegill, and perch fishing. For those who like spotting wildlife, there are opportunities to view plenty of birds like ducks, gulls, swans, hawks, and herons. Using a boat or kayak is the best way to explore and take in the full beauty of this stunning body of water.

1. acadia national park, me.

Acadia National Park  in Maine is one of the best places to visit in New England. It also makes for a wonderful road trip from Boston. 

If you love the outdoors, you will find lots of hiking trails in the park, most of which offer exceptional views. The Ocean Path Trail offers lovely views of the coastline and the ocean, and the walk around Jordan Pond is scenic as well. Both of these trails are family friendly options in the park. 

The ride through the park along Park Loop Road is scenic as well, and driving to the summit of Cadillac Mountain to watch the sunrise is a very popular activity.

Also be sure to snap photos of the picturesque Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse, and taste the popovers at Jordan Pond House Restaurant!

Where to stay in Acadia NP: The town of Bar Harbor is an excellent place to stay when you visit Acadia National Park. Accommodation prices tend to be higher in season, so plan a visit for the shoulder seasons! Heathwood Inn in Bar Harbor is a great mid-range option.

2. Burlington, VT

Burlington, Vermont, a vibrant small city tucked along the coast of Lake Champlain, is the perfect New England vacation spot.  

Waterfront Park is a great place to catch a panorama of Adirondack mountain across the lake and the best sunsets in the Northeast. 

Rent a bike on the Burlington Bike Path and pedal along the waterfront to one of several sand beaches for swimming and sunning.

There are also  many hikes  within the city limits including climbing the tower at Ethan Allen Park to see for miles.

Burlington is known for outstanding cuisine with many restaurants using locally sourced ingredients.

The craft beer scene is famous in Vermont, and Burlington has its share of breweries serving the best beer in the Northeast.  

Don’t miss the pedestrian mall of Church Street with its cute boutiques, restaurants with outdoor dining, and street performers. Grab a table at Honey Road for delicious Eastern Mediterranean fare.

3. White Mountains, NH

The White Mountains in New Hampshire present visitors with a breathtaking landscape of sprawling forests, beautiful waterfalls, and majestic peaks.

4. Boston, MA

One of the best Northeast USA vacations to book in 2023 is a visit to the beautiful city of Boston. 

Boston is a diverse city filled with all sorts of historical sites, stand out universities, beautiful fall colors, and more.  It’s a place people of all ages with varying interests can enjoy, as there’s truly something for everyone.  

While in Boston make sure to take a stroll along the  Freedom Trail .  This marked path links the must-see historical sites in the city.  Also make sure to enjoy the views of the skyline from a boat on the water. 

A great and cost effective way to do that is to take the “T” (public transportation) ferry from one side of the harbor to the other.  And, of course, stop by Mike’s Pastry for the best cannolis in the city.  

Where to stay in Boston: For a great budget friendly place to stay consider booking at HI Boston .  This hostel offers standard dorm rooms in a great location in the city.  For a private midrange option, consider booking at The Verb Hotel .  This highly rated hotel offers clean rooms located next to Fenway Park.  

5. Newport, RI

Newport, Rhode Island  is a charming destination for a spring escape.

With 400 miles of coastline featuring a range of beaches, attractions like the International Tennis Hall of Fame and National Museum of American Illustration, and the opportunity to explore Gilded Age mansions and nautical boutiques, visitors can indulge in the town’s timeless New England allure. 

Start your Newport adventure with a scenic drive along Ocean Drive, which offers breathtaking views of the New England coastline. Don’t miss the Cliff Walk, a 3.5 mile stroll showcasing stunning vistas and magnificent mansions.

The Breakers Mansion, a renowned summer residence of the Vanderbilt family, is a must-visit, allowing guests to immerse themselves in the opulence of the Gilded Age. 

To reach Newport, fly into Providence Rhode Island’s TF Green Airport, conveniently located just 40 minutes away.

6. New Haven, CT

The city of New Haven is a fabulous vacation spot due to its phenomenal coastal location, deep history, lively art scene, delicious cuisine, and it being the home of Yale University.

7. Adirondacks, NY

This spot could satisfy anyone including couples, families, hikers, or those craving a peaceful escape in nature. This area really shines in the fall when peak foliage makes the landscape come alive with red, orange, and golden hues. 

In the warmer months, there are plentiful hikes to choose from and lakes to kayak, paddleboard, boat, and fish on. Lake George, Lake Placid, and Saranac Lake are all very popular destinations, especially in the summer.

The Catskill Mountains in New York make for the perfect vacation in the northeast! This gorgeous area encompasses several mountains and towns in the Hudson River Valley.

There is  so much to do in the Catskills , including beautiful hiking trails, boating on the Hudson River, and several small towns with antique shops and artisan crafts.

Nature lovers will want to check out Kaaterskill Falls, one of New York’s tallest waterfalls! And in the winter, skiing at Hunter Mountain is a popular activity. The Catskills is also home to Opus40, a large stone sculpture park built on an old slate quarry.

Where to stay in the Catskills: There are some cute, independently operated motels and hotels in the Catskills. We like the budget-friendly Sunview Motel or the slightly more expensive Hotel Mountain Brook in Tannersville.

Both are within walking distance of many shops and restaurants and just a short drive from well-known attractions.

9. Finger Lakes, NY

One of the best vacation destinations in the northeast region of the USA is in the heart of New York, the Finger Lakes.

Those who love the outdoors will enjoy exploring the region’s state parks and waterfalls, including those at Watkins Glen, Taughannock, and around Ithaca. 

The Finger Lakes are also quite a romantic destination to visit for couples. Wineries and vineyards seem to dot the landscape at every turn, and there is no shortage of spots for tastings.

Get out on the water in a boat or just enjoy a scenic drive. The Finger Lakes are the perfect destination for a laid-back vacation in the northeast USA.

Where to stay in the Finger Lakes:

• Budget: Budget travelers should stay at the Colonial Inn & Creamery in Watkins Glen. The rooms are clean and the location can’t be beat. It’s within walking distance of plenty of  things to do in Watkins Glen  and the southern point of Seneca Lake.
• Mid-range: The Dorm Hotel  in downtown Ithaca provides unique midrange accommodation just outside of the Cornell University campus. The area is beautiful to walk around, and Cayuga Lake is not far away.

10. Long Island, NY

The Hamptons, located on  Long Island, New York , are filled with beautiful beaches, gorgeous ocean views, and incredible beachfront rentals. This has made the Hamptons one of the top locations for vacations in the USA. 

The Hamptons are made up of several gorgeous beach towns. Coopers Beach in Southampton is considered one of the best beaches to visit in the area. Other beaches that are also well worth the visit include Main Beach in East Hampton and Atlantic Avenue Beach in Amagansett. 

At the beach, you’ll find people picnicking, surfing, boating, and more. 

Besides topping up your tan at the beach, you can spend time hanging out at Sag Harbor, visiting Vineyards in the area, enjoying boutique shopping, taking a drive out to the Montauk Lighthouse, and climbing to the top. 

Also, be sure to grab a bite to eat at the Lobster Roll, which serves fresh seafood and is an iconic place on Long Island.

Where to stay on Long Island: To make your trip even better, you’ll find that you will be spoilt for choice in terms of hotels and beachfront rentals. Southampton Inn , which is right by Coopers Beach, is a popular choice, though. The Hamptons is an expensive destination, but another more budget-friendly hotel is the Greenporter Hotel in Greenport.

11. New York City, NY

When planning a Northeast vacation, New York City is definitely worth considering. There’s a reason NYC is iconically famous across the world.

From its 24/7 food scene, buzzing energy and bright city lights to its vast green spaces, you can design any type of  New York  trip you’d like. 

If it’s your first visit to the Big Apple, fill your itinerary with the top attractions. These should include a visit to the top of the Empire State Building, and taking a ferry to see Lady Liberty up close. Balance your exposure to the bustling city vibes by seeking reprieve in a quiet part of Central Park. 

For a more relaxed visit, spend a morning people-watching and playing board games in Bryant Park. Are you a foodie traveler? Add a food tour or pizza-making class to the itinerary. 

If you want to soak up the culture, spend an afternoon at The Metropolitan Museum of Art and see a show on Broadway. 

While Times Square is a must-see, branching out for a stroll along High Line Park offers a different perspective of the city. And a sunset boat cruise is the perfect pre-dinner affair on any evening spent in NYC.

12. Lancaster, PA

For a great Northeast USA vacation, head to Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

There are a lot of things to do in Lancaster , as well as the surrounding area. It’s great for families, couples, and even solo travelers. There is great food and a lot of history to be found.

A favorite site to visit is the Lancaster Central Market. It is the country’s oldest continuously operated public farmer’s market. There are over 60 vendors selling food, accessories, and more.

If you’re a beer lover, head over to Lancaster Brewing Company. Operating since 1995, they have produced over 22 different craft beers and won many awards, including medals at the 2013 World Beer Championship.

History buffs should visit Historic Rock Ford. It was once the home of Revolutionary War General Edward Hand. Make sure to also visit Amish country, just outside of Lancaster. You can explore farms or go on a buggy ride.

Where to stay in Lancaster: For your visit, consider staying at the Holiday Inn – Lancaster. It is located downtown so it’s close to many attractions and restaurants. It also has free WiFi, an indoor pool, and a restaurant.

Another place you can stay that is slightly more affordable is the Avid Hotels – Lancaster. It’s about 4 miles east of Lancaster but includes breakfast and has an indoor pool.

13. Washington DC

Known for being the nation’s capital, Washington DC is a vibrant city that sits along the Potomac River, in between the states of Maryland and Virginia. 

It’s one of the best vacation destinations in the northeastern USA since it is brimming over with incredible neoclassical monuments and world-renowned museums that make this a great family destination. 

In particular, the National Mall is worth a visit. However, be sure to get up early so that you can take a leisurely walk to the Lincoln Memorial, the Tidal Basin, and the Washington Monument. 

The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum is also worthwhile if you’re planning to spend 3 days in Washington DC . 

However, prepare for a sombre experience and be sure to reserve a free timed entry ticket. 

It’s also an extremely well-done museum that allows you to walk through the events leading up to and during the Holocaust. You’ll even get the ID of a real victim and discover what happened to them as you move through the museum. 

Where to stay in Washington DC: Spend the night at the Duo Housing DC hostel if you’re on a budget or the hip Hotel Hive , with a fun pizzeria on-site, if you’re looking for a mid-range option.

14. Annapolis, MD

Annapolis is one of the best Northeast USA vacations to take because of its charming personality.

Nestled in the heart of the Mid-Atlantic, there are plenty of  things to do in Annapolis  for any visitor.

Known as the “Sailing Capital of the United States,” this charming city offers a glimpse into America’s colonial past with its well-preserved architecture, cobblestone streets, and historic sites.

Explore the beautiful and bustling Annapolis Harbor, where you can witness an array of sailboats and yachts, or visit the United States Naval Academy, a renowned institution that showcases impressive architecture and offers a glimpse into naval history. 

Annapolis is also home to the nation’s oldest state capital in continuous use which is an impressive sight in the heart of the city. The city is incredibly walkable. Experience colonial homes like the William Paca House & Garden and Hammond Harwood House.

Treat yourself to the famous Maryland Crabs at The Boatyard Bar & Grill after a day of exploring.  

Where to stay in Annapolis: The Hilton Garden Inn Annapolis Downtow n for budget travelers or The Graduate Annapolis for more luxury travelers. Both are within walking distance to many attractions, so getting around is easy.

15. Shenandoah National Park, VA

Shenandoah National Park is a mountain getaway that feels incredibly remote–but it’s actually less than a 2 hour drive from the Washington, DC, metro area! 

For nearly 100 years, this park has been inviting visitors to explore the beautiful mountains, streams, and vistas along Skyline Drive. This 2-lane road meanders through the heart of the park, linking trailheads, campgrounds, and visitors centers together. 

Any  Shenandoah National Park itinerary  has to include at least one or two hikes, and you’ll be spoiled for choice inside the park. 

Kids will enjoy filling out the colorful brochure designed for the Fox Hollow Trail, while more experienced hikers might take on the park’s iconic Old Rag Trail, a section of the Appalachian Trail, or a backcountry hike. 

Where to stay in Shenandoah NP: There are seasonal accommodations available in the park for travelers on every budget. Backcountry camping is free, while the campgrounds in the park (open from spring-fall each year) start at $30 per campsite. Rustic hike-in cabins start at $25 a night, while modern cabins with parking are $60 and up. A room at one of the park’s 2 lodges starts at $130 and varies based on the season.

FAQ About Visiting the Northeast

True to the name, the Northeast USA covers the section of the USA from the Canadian border along the Eastern coastline as far south as Washington DC and Virginia.

The Northeast is known to get very cold in winter so if you want to make the most of the amazing Northeastern outdoors but avoid the crowds, aim for just before/after the peak summer season in June and September.

You can tell from this guide there are so many possible vacation destinations in the Northeast and you would need months to see them all but for a first-time visitor, 2-3 weeks is enough time to get a taste.

12 Beautiful Places To Visit In The Northeast USA

No doubt, if it’s your first visit to the northeast of the United States, it’s likely you’ll dive right in to some of the firm favourites of New York City , Niagara Falls and Washington DC, which are all incredible places to experience (there’s no doubt about that) but, and it’s a big but, there is so much more to see! One thing that is pretty darn wonderful about the US is its diversity and gorgeous places to explore, with the northeast being no exception!

If you’re already planning a trip to  New York City or thinking of seeing another side of the region, then make sure to take a look at some of these stunning stops.

If you love natural beauty, quaint towns and opportunities to spot whales and devour fresh lobster, then the northeast is for you.

Take a look at some of the very best places you should consider.

1.) Gorge on fresh lobster at Bar Harbour, Maine

On the northeast shores of Mt Desert Island, Bar Harbour is one special little place that’s well worth a gander at. Head into the town itself and gorge in one of the quaint, independent, restaurants that line the little streets.

Make sure to visit Rose Eden Restaurant, where they serve fresh lobster, with lashings of butter, all right from the shorefront at a very reasonable price too.

If you’re looking to work off all those buttery calories, take a walk along the Ocean Trail by the town. It’s something else.

2.) Time for a tipple on Nantucket Island

Approximately 3o miles from the shores of Cape Cod , Nantucket Island is one lovely little spot to visit.

Make sure to pop into the Nantucket Vineyard that also crafts local beers (Don’t forget to ask for a taster of some of their limited edition casks).

If you’re looking for a little R&R, then head towards Madakat Beach, arguably one of the nicest, sandy beaches, on the island.

3.) Watch the sunset at Grand Isle, Vermont

If you’re heading north in Vermont , make sure to take a pit stop on the gorgeous Grand Isle.

This intimate little island is only home to a few thousand people who really care about this gorgeous place.

Head to the beautiful Grand Isle State Park for a little ramble around the beautiful nature, it’s a great place to watch the sunset across the shores too.

4.) See the roaring falls of Finger Lakes, New York

Last time I visited Finger Lakes was in the midst of a crazy thunderstorm for a night in a tent. It was terrifying and exhilarating in equal measure.

Thankfully, thunderstorms are few and far between and the whole area is a breathtaking place to enjoy a few days away from the hustle and bustle of, say, New York City.

Make sure to take some time to visit, the roaring, Taughannock Falls and Watkins Glen that is truly one of a kind.

5.) Follow the Kanacamagus Highway in the White Mountains, New Hampshire

The White Mountains is situated predominately in New Hampshire, with Maine taking a little bit of it too! Head over to the whopping 800,000-acre park and drive the Kancamagus Highway without ever having to break a sweat.

On the other hand, if you’re looking for a hike or a ramble, make sure to take a look at the many designated routes that criss-cross the forest.

6.) Discover Mt Desert Island, Maine

Mt Desert Island is a picturesque island (home to Bar Harbour, I mentioned previously).

The island itself is a beautiful place to explore. Hike to the top of Cadillac Mountain and ramble through the picturesque Acadia National Park that’s great to see in Summer and Winter.

7.) Go whale watching in Boston, Massachusetts

Boston is one of my favourite east coast cities, packed full of history and incredible seafood, there’s a massive amount to do in the city.

If you’re spending a few days on your trip, make sure to head out whale watching, pack in some walking along the Freedom Trail.

Oh, and make sure to see the Museum of Fine Art (if that’s your thing). Its huge collection is one of the very best in the world.

Also, if you’re looking for a really quirky place to rest your head, make sure to check out the Verb Hotel that is based on 1960’s America.

8.) See Dr Seuss at Springfield, Massachusetts

Springfield has lots of charming things to see and do, evening if you’re only staying for a little time.

Make sure to visit, Watershops Pond, Hubbard Park and even spot the Dr Seuss statues within the sculpture garden itself.

9.) See the stars in Portland, Maine

Set on the corner of a peninsula, Portland is one lovely city to visit.

Make sure you take some time to visit the Portland Head Lighthouse where you’ll get the opportunity to brush up on some star-gazing skills (over the sea) or take a tour Victoria Mansion that is stunningly preserved.

If you’re looking for some outdoor activities, hop over to Fore Street for some local bites to eat.

10.) Discover the beautiful, Casco Bay Islands

Not far from the shores on Portland is the beautiful islands situated within Casco Bay itself. This huge bay has numerous islands that to explore, including Peaks Island (which actually is part of the city of Portland) and the beautiful Cliff Island too.

Alternatively, If you’re looking for a small island where you can stroll around, head over to Great Diamond that is car and lorry free. It’s perfect for walking on this relaxing island!

11.) Explore the wild and beautiful, Block Island

Block Island is technically part of Rhode Island (the state) and was named after a famous European explorer who ventured these waters many a year ago.

Head across to Mohegan Bluffs to see the iconic clay cliffs that overlook the ocean or visit Block Island North Lighthouse that is 150 years old this year.

12.) Gorge in Montpelier, Vermont

As the capital city of Vermont , Montpelier has lots of amazing things to see and do for us travellers.

Head over to the delicious Bragg Farm Sugar House that makes all things maple syrup. Be warned, you will leave on a sugar high!

10 Overlooked Places to Visit in the Northeast This Summer

When you think about northeast America, you probably picture New York, Boston, and Philadelphia. These are some great cities to visit, but the northeast has so much more to offer.

From the formal gardens of Brandywine Valley in Pennsylvania to the bear sanctuary of Shenandoah National Park, we’ve put together a list of ten overlooked but incredible places to visit in the northeast this summer .

What to Pack

It gets pretty hot in the northeast during the summer. The hot season lasts for almost four months, from May to September, with an average temperature of over 76°F. The hottest month is July, and you can expect an average high temperature of 85°F.

With such high temperatures, it’s important to pack for the weather:

• Lightweight, breathable fabrics are a must for keeping cool while exploring.
• Don’t forget a hat for added protection from the midday sun.
• Sunscreen is a must to protect your skin, whether you’re hiking or sipping cocktails at a beach bar.
• Comfortable sandals or breathable walking shoes will be best for long days of sightseeing while looking good on your travels .

Places to Visit in the Northeast This Summer

Brandywine Valley, Pennsylvania

Brandywine Valley is known for its beautiful, formal gardens and unique American Castles. Longwood Gardens is particularly popular and renowned for its landscape. The estate is dotted with planted conservatories, fountains, and thousands of acres of gardens and woodland to explore.

Acadia National Park, ME

Sitting on the coast of Maine, sprawling across Mount Desert Island; you’ll find Acadia National Park. It has over 47,000 acres of breathtaking landscape and wildlife and tons of activities to keep you busy year-round.

Portland, Maine

Portland has the perfect blend of outdoor adventures and a sophisticated art scene. The beach is never far away, and the beautiful weather makes it the perfect summer destination that is often overlooked.

The Northeast is one of the most amazing areas in the country. In addition to being home to some of the country’s largest cities, the region offers a plethora of outdoor activities due to the heavy forest coverage. Maine and New Hampshire take the first and second positions as the most forested states, while the rest of the Northeast falls within the Top 20.

The ability to quickly travel from urban to rural land and between state to state is definitely a perk. This gives you the opportunity to explore so many different places within a single vacation. From charming coastal villages in New England, to beautiful mountain ranges like the Catskills and White Mountains, to exciting cities like Boston, Philadelphia, & New York City, the region offers a bit of everything for everyone. Listed below are 15 must-see sights, all of which offer amazing views.

1. CliffWalk

CliffWalk is one of the most amazing sights in Rhode Island. The 3.5 mile walk takes you on a coastal journey past Newport’s historic mansions. If you think they are grand from the outside, just wait until you explore the inside of these lavish estates. In addition to taking in stately views of these opulent architectural masterpieces, you will experience one-of-a-kind coastal views on this peaceful walk. If you visit outside of the busy summer season, the walk takes on an even more relaxing nature.

2. The beaches of Islesboro, Maine

Islesboro is a unique island community located just off the central coast of Maine. Its’ secluded nature and beautiful beaches make it a prime summer vacation destination. Although the year-round population of just under 600 residents, the population soars to several thousand during the beautiful summer months. The gorgeous island is perfect for long summer bike rides, hunting for seaglass at the many historic public beaches, and enjoying nature from your beautiful vacation rental. A visit to the island will require a ferry ride from Lincolnville, although the ride over itself is quite scenic, with a charming lighthouse waiting to greet you as you arrive. I was fortunate enough to live in this gorgeous area.

3. The Freedom Trail

Visiting Boston without walking the city’s historic brick-lined Freedom Trail would be a major mistake. Even if you are not at all interested in history, you will still appreciate the beauty of Boston’s wonderful downtown. The amazing architecture alone is enough to warrant a visit. For those interested in history, you will have a field day exploring the 16 sights which make up the 3 mile journey into Boston’s past.

There are plenty of fantastic stops along the way – lunch in the North End neighborhood (home to many authentic local Italian restaurants – I recommend Giacomo’s ), a tour of the Paul Revere house, an inside look at the beautiful architecture of Old North Church, and a tour of the USS Constitution, to name a few. Above all, be sure to climb to the top of Bunker Hill Monument. Exhausting (you will need to walk 294 steps up to the observing area) after a full day of walking, yet so worth it for the incredible panoramic views of the city.

4. Kaaterskill Falls

New York’s tallest waterfall is an amazing 2 tier wonder in the beautiful Catskills Region. At a height of 260 feet, it stands mighty as one of the tallest waterfalls in the state. The Catskills Region is known for its’ abundance of gorgeous hiking trails and wonderful natural surroundings. The hike to Kaaterskill Falls is both peaceful and scenic, and thankfully short at just a mile. The falls are truly an amazing sight not to be missed. It beats any pricey man-made tourist attraction any day. There are plenty of wonderful photo opportunities here, especially if you visit on a weekday morning.

In addition to Kaaterskill Falls, you will also come across another smaller, yet still beautiful, waterfall called Bastion Falls. Both are wonderful sights and the hike itself is just so peaceful and rustic. Occasionally, black bears and other small wildlife species can be seen in the area, so keep your eyes peeled and keep your distance!

5. Blue Hills Reservation

Blue Hills is a Massachusetts gem; an enormous hiking oasis just outside of the city. With over 100 trails, the park is amongst the largest you will find so close to a major city. Blue Hills is gorgeous all year-round, with scenic green trees and clear skyline views in the summer months and brisk fall colors in September & October. Fall foliage chair lift rides are a highlight of the fall season; a must-do for any visitor during this time period. And don’t forget to check out Blue Hill Ski area, a winter favorite for area residents looking to enjoy some convenient local skiing. Blue Hills, a fantastic 4 season destination; so close to the city, yet so far away!

6. Duquesne Incline

Pittsburgh is an underrated city which often gets overlooked in favor of more popular tourist destinations. However, the city has much to offer, including incredible museums, interesting neighborhoods, lively sports teams, and above all, an amazing skyline. Pittsburgh is home to one of the most appealing skylines, thus it would make sense to take advantage of a ride up the Duquesne Incline while in town.

The historic incline, which opened in 1877, takes you on a quick, yet scenic ride up to Mt Washington; here you will be greeted with amazing panoramic views of Pittsburgh’s tremendous skyline, bridges, and stadiums. It’s an absolute must-see while visiting the city. In fact, it’s so great that you should consider both a daytime and nighttime visit in order to see the skyline in 2 completely different, yet equally stunning settings.

7. Camden Hills State Park

Camden, located on the central coast of Maine, is one of the most charming coastal towns you will ever come across. The scenery is gorgeous; the diverse variety of trees, gorgeous rolling hills, quaint water views, and historic buildings combine to perform the picture-perfect coastal getaway. The town’s fitting slogan is “Where the mountains meet the sea.” There is plenty of natural fun to be had in the area, most notably the beautiful Camden Hills State Park , home to miles and miles of serene hiking trails.

The must-do trail here is is the slightly strenuous Mt. Battie hike, where after a challenging climb, you will be rewarded with panoramic views of Penobscot Bay and the mountains. Bring your camera as you will quickly find out that gorgeous photo opportunities await you here. Aside from the Mt. Battie trail, you will be able to lose yourself in nature on numerous other trails; all offering plentiful wildlife and bird watching opportunities and peaceful views.

8. New Hampshire’s White Mountains

New Hampshire’s incredible White Mountain region is one of the premier New England destinations for recreational fun. Whether you are into hiking and biking or skiing and snowboarding, you will find what you are looking for and more in a New Hampshire getaway. Summer is a great time to get out into the fresh air: explore the trails, observe wildlife, and take some great pictures of waterfalls.

Fall is an excellent time to take a scenic drive. The Kancamagus Highway is one of the most popular routes. The 34 mile drive, which is known to be one of the best places in the country for fall foliage, takes you past rivers, mountains, gorges, and streams. The Mt. Cog Railroad is another great attraction to check out during the fall season. A 3 mile mountain train ride will take you up to the summit of Mt. Washington, which is the highest peak in the Northeast.

Winter is perhaps the best season of all, a quiet time filled with plentiful snow and ample opportunity for winter sports. Everything from secluded cabins in the woods to rustic lodges to luxury ski resorts are available to choose amongst for your winter vacation. A great activity to check out is Bretton Woods Nordic Center , a cross country skiing dream destination sure to please both newbie and advanced skiers. It would be difficult for anyone to to deny the beauty of skiing in such a pristine, beautiful setting. A very memorable experience for everyone, especially tourists visiting from warm weather locales.

Another fun activity while you are in the vicinity is Nestlenook Farms . This charming winter oasis offers a plethora of fun winter activities. From cozy sleigh rides, to skating on a Victorian ice rink, to snowshoeing with the gorgeous White Mountains in the background, it’s a dream destination for snow lovers and Hallmark Christmas movie fanatics.

9. Empire State Building

I always dreamed of the perfect romantic date upon the Empire State building ever since seeing the Tom Hanks/Meg Ryan classic Sleepless in Seattle . After multiple visits to New York, I finally made my way up the 86th floor to take in the incredible cityscapes. Although NYC receives much negative press regarding its’ high crime and grittiness factor, the city truly looks peaceful and beautiful from 1050 feet up in the air. For a one-of-a-kind urban view like no other, do make the time for this iconic attraction.

And afterwards, enjoy a slice of pizza at NY Pizza Suprema , one of the city’s best places for an authentic slice of pie.

10. The beaches of Cape Cod

The beautiful Cape Cod region, which includes 15 charming towns in Massachusetts, is a wonderful, peaceful vacation destination within close proximity to many busy cities. If you are looking for a laid-back escape, packed with relaxing leisure activities like hiking and biking, combined with long days relaxing at picturesque beaches, then Cape Cod should definitely top your list of possible New England coastal getaways. The beaches here are often regarded as the most scenic in the world. Coast Guard Beach was referred to as “The Great Beach” by Henry David Thoreau.

Provincetown , located at the tip of Cape Cod, is home to 2 well regarded beaches: Race Point and Herring Cove. The best way to end your day in Provincetown is by watching a gorgeous sunset at either of these 2 beaches. Race Point is the only Eastern point where you can see the sun set over the water.

In addition, there lies a grand, secluded, undeveloped beach along Cape Cod’s amazing Great Island Trail . This beach is only accessible via a hike, therefore, it is completely desolate. This serene beach is perhaps the most magnificent of all.

Also Cape Cod is known for its’ gorgeous bike paths. Both the Cape Cod Canal Path and the Cape Cod Rail Trail are highly worth looking into. If you are seeking a great workout + fabulous views, it doesn’t get much better!

11. Devil’s Hopyard State Park

East Haddam, Connecticut is one of the prime areas in New England for spectacular leaf peeping. Although there are many scenic drives to take throughout town, one of the best ways to explore all the wonders of New England’s magnificent fall foliage season is by taking a quiet hike through Devil’s Hopyard State Forest .

Tree covered trails, a gorgeous waterfall surrounded by foliage, and a historic covered bridge all come together to create some amazing photography opportunities. It would be a shame to pass up such a great park during New England’s best season. The cool crisp air, the striking colors, nature, exercise, photography, and peace and quiet all rolled into one; you just can’t top it!

12. Walkway over the Hudson

One of New York’s most scenic destinations is the Walkway Over the Hudson , a 1.25 mile long path over the Hudson River. This year-round pedestrian path happens to be the longest elevated bridge in the world. It’s quite a sight during any season, but even more amazing during the peak of fall. The walkway provides the perfect setting for a refreshing walk. Take a break from your computer and phone and enjoy the wonders of nature in a breathtaking setting.

Because the Walkway is open year-round, you have the opportunity to check out how the scenery changes magnificently with each passing season. A fall visit is recommended as upstate New York is well known for its’ amazing autumn season. Nevertheless, whenever you decide to visit, you will be treated to a picturesque setting.

13. Central Park

As one of the most visited and beautiful urban parks in the country, Central Park is well worth a spot on your bucket list. Not only is there so much to see and do here, but the park’s scenery changes drastically with the seasons From summertime greenery, to vivid fall foliage, to a snowy winter wonderland, the park shines anytime of year.

Famous attractions include the Central Park Zoo, the Wollman Ice Rink, the historic carousel, and Strawberry Fields (John Lennon memorial). My favorite time to visit is during the quiet winter months. The weather is refreshingly brisk, the crowds have disappeared, and the famous ice rink is open. Movie buffs will quickly remember the rink featured in 2 great holiday classics: Home Alone 2 and Serendipity !

14. The beaches of Rhode Island

Rhode Island , aptly nicknamed “The Ocean State,” has its’ fair share of beautiful beaches. Scarborough Town Beach in Narragansett is amazing; it’s wide and features smooth sand and gorgeous quaint views. Goosebury Beach and Second Beach in Newport are also worthy of a visit. If you are a fan of collecting seaglass, head over to Teddy’s Beach in Portsmouth for an abundance of new pieces to add to your collection. In addition, all of these beaches provide a wonderful setting for taking a long, relaxing stroll. Scarsborough is perfect for summer swimming and sunbathing, while Goosebury is great for photography.

The best aspect of Rhode Island beaches is that they typically only get busy during the prime summer months. Fall and winter, if you can bare the cold, are actually ideal times to take a solitary walk. There are many benefits to visiting in the winter, namely the fact that the beaches do not stay busy all year like California and Florida beaches. Although many complain of the short summer season and cold, long winter season, perhaps, the greatest treasure of all is having a magnificent beach all to yourself.

15. Sachuest Point Wildlife Refuge

Rhode Island is home to numerous fantastic hikes, nature preserves, and natural wonders. One of these beautiful places to explore is Sachuest Point Wildlife Refuge , a coastal sanctuary located in Middletown (near Newport).

Hiking the trails, wildlife photography, birdwatching, exploring the nature museum, and just enjoying the gorgeous marsh and ocean views make for a fun-filled, yet relaxing day out. No doubt, Sachuest is one of the most beautiful place you will have the pleasure of visiting during your stay in Rhode Island.

To help you sort through the region's spate of charming towns, we zeroed in on five destinations within driving distance of New York City , Boston and other Northeastern hubs — all with compelling reasons to visit this fall.

The Catskills

Depending on where you live, you could escape to the mountainous, sometimes rural areas of the Catskills in just over two hours. This area of rippling terrain is punctuated by rambling rivers and waterfalls, making it perfect for scenic fall foliage hikes and drives.

Consider the Giant Ledge and Panther Mountain trails, near Big Indian; Kaaterskill Falls in Hunter, New York; the hike to the restored fire tower on Mount Tremper, near Phoenicia; and the Overlook Mountain trailhead just outside Woodstock.

The Catskills region is in the midst of another resurgence , making it easy for even frequent visitors to experience a new, undiscovered part of the sprawling wilderness areas.

Consider the Urban Cowboy Lodge in Big Indian from $360 per night (opt for a room with a clawfooted soaking tub or an outdoor cedar tub) or Kenoza Hall , from the area's esteemed Foster Supply Hospitality. Saratoga Springs

If you thought the only thing to do in Saratoga Springs was to go to the racetrack, think again. This city about four hours north of New York City is having a bit of a renaissance, thanks to some excellent new hotel openings and the Upper Hudson Wine Trail , which features an ever-growing roster of family-run vineyards and wineries.

If you visit between mid-September and early October, you might even catch the harvesting action. From here, you can easily explore scenic Lake George and the high peaks of the Adirondacks.

The Brentwood Hotel , which opened in 2016 in a revamped motor lodge, is a frontrunner on the scene. Designed by Brooklyn-based Studio Tack, the 12-room boutique hotel features equestrian motifs inspired by its location just steps from the racecourse; rooms start at $300 per night.

Joining it is the historic Adelphi Hotel , which emerged from a top-to-bottom renovation in 2017 with charming rooms starting at around $259. Even if you're not staying in the hotel, be sure to elbow up to the bar at Morrissey's, named for the yarn-spinning sportsman who brought horse racing to town.

The Berkshires

The secret's out about this mountainous region in western Massachusetts. Equidistant from New York City and Boston, the Berkshires make for a perfect fall getaway complete with excellent hiking, cultural attractions and great places to spend the night.

There are plenty of ways to fill your fall days in this area. Housed in a complex of 19th-century mill buildings in North Adams, MASS MoCA , or the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art, has long been a pilgrimage site for art lovers. Don't miss Sol LeWitt's staggering wall drawings — a cornerstone of the museum since they were installed in 2008. The area is also home to the Norman Rockwell Museum (for which you should purchase timed tickets in advance of your trip) and The Mount , Edith Wharton's mansion in Lenox.

Miraval Berkshires is the third iteration of the wellness-focused chain. Guests can try horseback riding at Meadowview Stables, take classes on beekeeping, hike in the adjacent forest and enjoy relaxing treatments at the 29,000-square-foot Life in Balance spa. As part of the World of Hyatt program, an off-peak award night at this Category 12 resort will cost you 40,000 points for single occupancy, with cash rates from about $650 this fall.

Travelers can also bed down at the ajacent Wyndhurst Mansion , which occupies a Gilded Age mansion and cottage. The complex has elegant rooms, an outdoor pool, an 18-hole golf course and a fitness center. There are also two restaurants — a tavern serving breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as the upscale 1894 Fireside Bistro serving lunch and dinner.

The Hudson Valley

When it comes to an easy weekend escape from New York City, it's hard to beat the Hudson Valley. The charming town of Hudson is just two hours away via Amtrak or two and a half hours by car.

You can easily post up at the laid-back Rivertown Lodge (starting at $239 per night) or the food-focused Wm Farmer & Sons (starting at $269 per night). Another great option is The Wick, a Tribute Portfolio Hotel which opened in a reborn 19th-century candle and soap-making factory in town (though expect to pay 49,000 Marriott Bonvoy points per night if you're booking this fall). There's also The Maker Hotel , an intimate 11-room property spread across three historical buildings downtown; rooms start around $450 per night in the fall, but be prepared for a two- or three-night minimum stay. For a more pastoral setting, head to Amenia and check into Troutbeck — an inn on a historic estate that once played host to Mark Twain, Henry David Thoreau and Teddy Roosevelt. The spacious, airy rooms here will set you back upwards of $435 per night.

Regardless of where you stay, be sure to go sailing on the Hudson, enjoy leisurely hikes and go apple picking. This is fall in New York state, after all.

Central Vermont

About five hours from New York City and less than three hours from Boston, central Vermont's bucolic mountain landscapes and small-town charm make it the perfect destination for an autumn getaway. The entire state has a population of around 624,000, so you'll find that even the capital of Montpelier feels like the kind of place where everyone knows each other's names.

Situated in the heart of Woodstock, the historic Woodstock Inn & Resort — established by Laurence and Mary Rockefeller — recently emerged from a $16 million renovation to the Federalist-style building and its 142 rooms and suites. For some, the perfect beach is a tiny remote cove or one isolated behind miles of undeveloped dunes. Others crave the hubbub and excitement of an old-fashioned beach resort with a busy boardwalk, soft ice cream, a carousel, and maybe even an ocean-side fun park like those found at Old Orchard Beach in Maine or the iconic Coney Island Beach in New York City .

Beachgoers also differ on their preferred water temperature, from bracing Maine surf to the warmer waters of Cape May, and even one on the shores of New Hampshire's famed Lake Winnipesaukee.

Ranking beaches is a tricky business at best, so instead, we arranged them geographically , from Maine to New Jersey . We've tried to mix the list to include something for all tastes, although, of course, none of these is the secluded little cove that's a secret to all but a few.

These are all popular places to visit, so expect parking to be difficult — plan to arrive early in the morning, and even then, don't expect to be alone in your quest for a good spot. Remember, there's a reason these beaches are so popular: they're the best.

The throwback atmosphere of Old Orchard Beach is what its devotees love about it as they soar above the beach on a heart-stopping Ferris wheel ride at Palace Playland , New England's last full-scale amusement park on a beach. This carnival-style park has ticketed rides, not general admission, so you can wander around and soak up the atmosphere if you're not up for an arcade game or a bumper-car ride.

The old-fashioned wooden pier is another iconic landmark at Old Orchard Beach, topped with an assortment of shops and restaurants that offer all the expected soft ice cream, saltwater taffy, fried dough, and seafood. If you're here in the evening during a fireworks show, get an outdoor seat and have dinner at the far end of the pier for the best views.

One of the best things about Old Orchard Beach is how accessible it is if you don't want to (or can't) drive here. Just one block from the sand, and right in the center of the main shopping and dining area, sits an Amtrak station that provides seasonal service from May through October. The southernmost station is Boston's North Station, with two more stops in Massachusetts, three in New Hampshire, and several more in Maine.

This is one of the most popular places to visit in Maine , offering seven miles of golden sand that is free and open to the public, as well as plenty of places to eat and an abundance of places to stay.

If you want to wiggle your toes in southern Maine's famous soft sand, formed by eons of grinding the native granite into a fine silver-colored powder, kick off your shoes in Kennebunk. Get a parking sticker at the town hall or take the handy trolley from your hotel or one of the B&Bs that fill the town's former captains' mansions.

Gooch's Beach begins at the Kennebunk River and leads to Mother's Beach , a short section protected by low rocky areas that are safe for kids to play in. Mother's Beach also has super-soft sand and a good playground that's relatively new, and although there are no permanent facilities here, portable toilets are maintained in summer.

West of the in-town beaches, close to the Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge , is the idyllic dune-backed Parsons Beach . Parking is limited at the beach itself, but you can park near the main road and walk in.

A long barrier beach separates the saltmarshes of the Wells National Estuarine Research Reserve from the Atlantic Ocean, stretching from the town of Wells south to Ogunquit. Drake Island, Wells, Crescent, Moody, Footbridge , and Ogunquit beaches meld from one to the other, each with plenty of soft sand and its own following of families that return year after year.

Hotels, resorts, and restaurants stretch along Route 1, which parallels the coast. New Hampshire makes the most of its 13-mile coastline with five public beaches, three of which are state parks. The biggest is Hampton Beach, a long span of white sand that's consistently rated as one of the cleanest beaches in the United States and among the best beaches in New England .

Weirs Beach is located near Laconia in New Hampshire's Lakes Region and is a favorite freshwater swimming spot for visitors. It occupies a stretch of sand on the shore of Lake Winnipesaukee (locally referred to simply as "the big lake"), within the Endicott Rock State Historic Site.

Although the beach itself doesn't offer much in the way of amenities, it sits at the end of the Wiers Boardwalk , which has plenty of restaurants, shops, and diversions, including classic arcades. This is also home to the dock for the M/S Mount Washington and the US Mailboat M/V Sophie C , which offer sightseeing cruises on Lake Winnipesaukee .

Stretching along the tidal Annisquam River and Ipswich Bay north of Boston, Wingaersheek Beach has crystal clear waters and a very gradual slope that at low tide extends the beach to more than half a mile wide.

The shallow water makes this Gloucester beach a favorite place to visit for families, especially when the receding tide uncovers huge rock formations to climb on and tidal pools filled with snails and other small marine creatures to discover.

Close to Boston , but feeling light years away in the cute and historic town of Manchester-by-the-Sea, is a beach with two unique features: singing sand and a charming bathhouse built in the 1920s. The setting is scenic, with a long rocky headland bookmarking one end of the beach.

The "singing" you'll hear as you walk across the sand is caused by a combination of round, uniformly sized sand grains containing silica, and a humid atmosphere. As you walk, the friction and compression cause the low humming sound.

One of two Provincetown beaches that are part of the Cape Cod National Seashore, Herring Cove Beach is great for swimming, sunbathing, shelling, and even spotting seals. Both in Truro, on the outer end of Cape Cod , Head of the Meadow and Ballston Beach are idyllic stretches of sand facing the Atlantic, backed by dunes and sand bluffs that rise as high as 100 feet. Accessed over the dunes on paths lined with dune grasses, Head of the Meadow has two areas: one a town beach, the other inside the Cape Cod National Seashore . The latter has a lifeguard.

Surfing is allowed at Head of the Meadow, outside the designated swimming area. Both beaches are accessed from Route 6.

Easton's Beach, also called First Beach, offers ocean swimming, as well as plenty of activities for kids. Younger kids will love the vintage carousel and playground, while teens can make use of the skateboard park and enjoy live music.

Beach amenities include showers, changing areas, and rest facilities, as well as picnic tables and grills for public use. Visitors can rent umbrellas, chairs, and water sports equipment on-site, and there is a snack bar that also sells staples like towels and sunscreen.

Instead of arcades and rides, you'll find the exotic flavors of " Little Odessa " — a neighborhood of émigrés from Russia and Eastern Europe. At the north end of the Jersey shore, with views of the New York City skyline, Sandy Hook beach is on a long, low spit of land, really an island connected to the mainland by a bridge. Besides the miles of lovely sandy beaches, Sandy Hook National Recreation Area has a seven-mile bike path, camping sites, and water sports equipment. You can watch the abundant birdlife or join a park ranger on a canoe tour .

With its protected wildlands and beautiful ocean beaches, Sandy Hook is one of the favorite weekend getaways in New Jersey . There are no hotels on Sandy Hook, but you'll find places to stay on the mainland in Atlantic Highlands, which is connected to New York City by a 35-minute ferry ride.

Entertainment here means lazing on the pristine dune-backed beach, stopping in a café, and browsing in the boutiques that line the stone-paved streets. Stop at the Wetlands Institute to learn about the shore ecosystem and meet some of the animals that live here, or get closer to the water on a boat excursion or fishing trip.

This is a great place to enjoy the sand with your pup, too — Stone Harbor Beach is among one of the best dog-friendly beaches in the state, with a section that's open to leashed dogs all day, any time of year.

After the sedate atmosphere of Stone Harbor and the peaceful natural environment of Sandy Hook, it's hard to believe that Wildwood is part of the same 127-mile coastline. If you long for the neon and the noise, the tacky souvenirs, and cotton candy, Wildwood is your scene.

Whether you're looking for a summer hotspot full of excitement and entertainment and brimming with crowds, or want to escape to a quieter small town this season, the shores on the East Coast have a little something for everyone. From charming, historic New England towns to tropical Southern getaways, there is so much to explore this summer.

There are 14 states that make up this stretch of the US, and each one has its own atmosphere, climate, and culture. From Cape Cod to the Florida Keys , the Atlantic Seaboard is home to a wide variety of vacation destinations. Here are 14 of the best East Coast beach towns in the US.

Bar Harbor, ME

Bar Harbor, Maine

Much of Maine's Mt. Desert Island is covered by Acadia National Park —home to climbs like Cadillac Mountain and a sophisticated system of carriage roads financed by John D. Rockefeller Jr. But on the island's northeast corner, charming Bar Harbor is a destination in its own right. Skirting Frenchmen Bay, Bar Harbor began drawing visitors as far back as the mid-19th century when some of the Hudson River School, a group of artists that included the likes of Thomas Cole and Frederic Edwin Church, were taken with Maine's Down East landscapes. Still picturesque, Bar Harbor is now a full-fledged tourist town with a bustling main street, whale-watching tours, and of course, easy access to Acadia.

Rockport, MA

Rockport, Massachusetts

The North Shore, a group of towns in Greater Boston, is a culturally important swath of Massachusetts. The coastal region is known for its excellent seafood, beautiful beaches, and historic landmarks. Many a good film has been filmed here as well, such as Martin Scorsese’s Shutter Island and Kenneth Lonergan’s Manchester-by-the-Sea . There are many towns worth visiting, but Rockport is a favorite among travelers. Forty miles north of Boston, the town has a can't-miss natural gem in Halibut Point State Park, from which visitors can spot Maine in the distance 80 miles away. Rockport is also beloved by art history buffs: it is home to Motif Number 1, a fishing shack with the superlative “the most-often painted building in America.” It was built in 1840, and was a popular subject because it represented New England’s nautical character. (And it didn’t hurt that the light hit it just so.) A replica was built promptly following the historic Blizzard of 1978, which destroyed the original. Oak Bluffs, MA

Ferries deliver day trippers to this little Martha’s Vineyard town daily and the colorful gingerbread houses for which Oak Bluffs is known are straight out of a storybook. Visitors walk straight off their boats into Ocean Park, a circular green overlooking the sea, encircled by said houses, with a frothy, delicate gazebo sitting in the center. Oak Bluffs has a long history of welcoming Black visitors, and today it is home to the annual African-American Film Festival .

Cape Cod, MA

While it really heats up during the summer, it's a beautiful destination year-round, and is brimming with history (head to nearby Plymouth to see where the Mayflower docked). Like Oak Bluffs, Newport is a beach town known for its houses, though a very different sort. Ten enormous, historic mansions—once the summer homes of the Vanderbilts, Nevada silver heiresses, and other Westerners of unimaginable wealth—remain standing along the famous cliff walk. Today however, they are museums. The most famous two are The Breakers and Rosecliff. The Newport mansions famously earned the ire of writer Joan Didion, who wrote in her essay The Seacoast of Despair, “To stand in the dining room of ‘The Breakers’ is to imagine fleeing it, pleading migraine.” Today, in lieu of the Great Gatsby -esque lawn parties of yore where swans roamed the grounds, Newport attracts visitors of all stripes for events such as the Newport Folk Festival.

Montauk, NY

Montauk, New York

The final stop on the eastern tip of Long Island, Montauk is appropriately known as the End. Due to strong winds, rough surf, and ample preserved land, it really does feel like the edge of the world, here. (Although some residents of Long Island’s furthest out town argue that if you really think about it, it’s actually the Beginning.) Montauk feels more remote and low-key than its luxurious, sceney Hamptons counterparts. Every visit to Montauk should include a stop at the Montauk Point Light House, which was commissioned by President George Washington in 1796. It is still operating, and the panoramic views from the top are out of this world.

Chincoteague, VA

You won't find bustling boardwalks, sleek hotels, or grids of cars with clunky bike racks trapped in traffic in Chincoteague. This coastal town is all about the wildlife—specifically its wild horses . Visitors flock to the island annually for the Pony Penning that has been held since 1925. The Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Department holds the event, and it consists of a pony swim—in which the animals cross the Assateague Channel—and a pony auction. No one really knows how this population of horses came to be, though there are competing theories. Some say they are descendants of Spanish horses shipwrecked en route to Peru in the 17th century. Others claim they were left long ago by pirates. Still others say they are runaways from mainland farmers. The quaint beauty of Chincoteague includes trails for hiking, beaches, and a red and white lighthouse. For the best pony views, cross over on a bike to the Maryland side of Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge.

There is no place quite like the Chesapeake Bay . Step foot here and breathe in the saltwater air, indulge in delicious seafood, and enjoy the gorgeous beaches. The seaside resort town of Ocean City offers fun for the whole family—stroll down the boardwalk and taste the saltwater taffy to start, then take your pick of activities for all ages: surfing, fishing, and kayaking included. If you're looking for something a little less busy, the nearby small town of Berlin (just a 15-minute drive away) is great for a quick trip or overnight stay to avoid the crowds, but will take you away from the gorgeous shoreline. Nags Head is a beach town on the Outer Banks , a group of barrier islands and spits sandwiched between mainland North Carolina and the Atlantic Ocean. It's known for its sand dunes in Jockey Ridge State Park, which comprise the tallest true sand dune system on the East Coast. Hundreds of shipwrecks nearby—caused by the region's shifting sands and heavily trafficked waters—have given the surrounding waters the moniker “Graveyard of the Atlantic,” and the nearby USS Huron is a popular scuba dive site.

Pawley's Island, SC

Pawleys Island is so small that its year-round population hovers around 100 people. It was first settled in the 1500s, making it one of the oldest beach towns in the US. With that amount of history, there is, of course, a ghost story to go with it: There have been sightings of the Gray Man, a ghost whose appearance is said to warn of hurricanes as he paces up and down the beach, dating to a 19th-century storm. Summer options on Pawleys Island that are not at all spooky—besides flopping around on the beach—include golf, fishing, walking sculpture-filled gardens, and feasting on Lowcountry cuisine like She Crab soup.

Myrtle Beach, SC

While it's not too far from the aforementioned Pawleys Island, Myrtle Beach will feel worlds away from the slow, small-town atmosphere of the other quaint town. This popular summer destination boasts bigger crowds than its neighbor, and has a wide assortment of entertainment, dining, nightlife, and activities available. Aside from the deliciously warm weather and miles of beaches to traverse, Myrtle Beach is also home to a great many golf courses, amusement parks, water parks, and an iconic boardwalk with a massive 187-foot-tall Ferris Wheel.

Tybee Island, GA

Tybee Island, Georgia

Just a short drive from Savannah , Georgia, this coastal community is in the perfect spot for a day trip . Even during the summer, some parts of it manage to maintain that small-town vibe and don't get unbearably crowded, boasting an assortment of adorable ice cream and coffee shops, long stretches of sandy beaches, and great waterfront access. There's a little something for everyone from families to couples— South Beach is better for those who want a little excitement in their atmosphere, whereas North Beach is a bit more quiet and contained. I've found it particularly great for families (having traveled here with a multigenerational group ages 1-68), and recommend the kitschy Original Crab Shack for a memorable meal.

Siesta Key, FL

Siesta Key, Florida

While we love the beach towns listed above, the only part of the East Coast that has a true tropical climate is the lower half of Florida. Naturally, the beaches in this area are very beautiful. We want to laud Siesta Key in particular for its fine sand, which comes from the Appalachian Mountains and is made up almost entirely of cool and reflective quartz, its waterfront dining and drinking, and its excellence for water sports like parasailing. The three beaches to visit on Siesta Key are Siesta Beach, Crescent Beach, and Turtle Beach.

The 21 Wildest East Coast Beaches

Not all stretches of sand are created equal. These are the Atlantic’s best, most adventurous shorelines, from Maine to Florida.

If you’ve ever lived along the East Coast, there’s a secret that all curious, outdoorsy people soon discover: the wildest, most deserted places are often those abutting the Atlantic. That’s right, the best East Coast beaches can be every bit as remote-feeling as Western landscapes. This is easier to comprehend when you realize that the East Coast has roughly 30,000 miles of coastline. (The entire Pacific Coast, by contrast, has 7,863.)

This revelation came to me early, while exploring New England in my twenties, and re-confirmed it in my 30s and 40s, as I looked to escape New York City on weekends. Since then, I’ve driven as far as Maine and North Carolina’s Outer Banks—roughly eight hours in either direction—from NYC to explore an “undiscovered” beaches and maybe catch a fish or two. I’ve also road tripped all over the south’s Lowcountry looking for an empty stretch of sand, and have spent way too much time on Florida’s Atlantic Coast trying to to catch a redfish or bonefish on a fly rod.

Look, I’m not foolish enough to think anyone can be an “expert” on 30,000 miles worth of barrier islands, salt marshes, and tiny beachside communities. But I’ve explored enough to say with confidence that there are some wild damn places out there, and I’ve been lucky enough to discover a few that are well worth a visit.

Here are just a handful of my favorites. This list also includes a mix of both remote, undeveloped gems and impossible-to-ignore standbys that are great simply because of their, well…beach vibes. It’s a whole thing, and any town that has it, like Cape May, New Jersey, or Folly Beach, South Carolina, is worth a look-see, too. Trust me, you can’t go wrong with any of these beaches, as long as you’re packing some sunscreen (and maybe a bottle of bug spray for the real remote ones).

Best Beaches in Maine

Location: Twelve miles south of Bar Harbor Why We Love It: Soft sand surrounded by the coniferous forest of Acadia National Park

This is probably Maine’s most iconic beach —a pocket of white sand framed by rocky shorelines and wind-flagged trees—and one of the most beautiful beaches in U.S. National Parks . For New Englanders, Sand Beach is well-known—for good reason. It’s one of the few sandy beaches in this part of the state (hence the name), and it’s sheltered just enough from the wind that it’s often perfect for sunbathing on a warm day. In the summer months, there’s even a lifeguard on duty. This all means that it’s popular and you can expect crowds in July and August. Even then, only a handful of people venture into the water, because its temperature usually peaks south of 60 degrees Fahrenheit. But if you’re willing to brave the cold Atlantic, swimming here can be good. Despite its popularity, it can even feel secluded on the right day. There’s also hiking and paddling in nearby Acadia. One of the more difficult and popular treks is Beehive Trail , a 1.4-mile loop that ascends 450 feet and offers stunning views of the below.

Know Before You Go: Even though it’s inside Acadia National Park, there is no fee to access the beach. The parking lot, however, occasionally fills up on busy weekend days, so it’s best to arrive early.

Bonus Beach: Roque Bluffs State Park, Maine

Location: In the heart of Down East Maine, eight miles from the small town of Machias Best For: A choose-your-own-adventure swim, either in the cold ocean waters or in a freshwater pond

The bulk of this 274-acre park is a half-mile crescent of sand and pebbles that divides the shallow waters of 60-acre Simpson Pond from Englishman Bay. In the heat of summer, it’s possible to swim in either—or both, a plunge in the brisk saltwater followed by the comparably warm waters of Simpson Pond. While it’s great for a plunge, this is not a lounging beach, to be clear, as the pebbles make laying on a beach towel uncomfortable. But Roque Bluffs does offer a relaxing stroll with dramatic views of rugged islands jutting out of the ocean waters. There’s also a series of short trails in the fields and woodlands inside the park, with an excellent vantage point of Pond Cove and Great Cove. If you’re in the area, it’s worth a dip.

Best Beach in New Hampshire

Location: 15 miles South of Portsmouth, near the border with Massachusetts Why We Love It: A quieter alternative to its more bustling neighbors, with pristine sands

New Hampshire has the shortest coastline in the U.S. at just 18 miles, but it packs some excellent beaches into that stretch. Its most famous is Hampton Beach, a classic New England destination with white sand, long boardwalks, and a circus-like atmosphere, thanks to its string of arcades. Much better is Seabrook Beach, across the inlet from Hampton, with impossibly white sand, consistent waves, and none of the crowds. By comparison, it feels hidden, serene, and impossibly quaint. There’s a reason for this: parking is nearly impossible to find because it’s prohibited without a resident parking permit. But if you make it here, you’ll have a wide expanse of sand to stroll along or set up an umbrella. The surfing is good here, and the dunes make it seem wild, even if you’re only a few minutes to the Hampton Beach circus.

Know Before You Go: To get around the parking, take an Uber or ride a bike from the town of Seabrook, less than 5 miles away. You can also pay for parking at Hampton Beach and walk across Hampton Bridge, then down to Seabrook, a little over a mile walk.

Best Beaches in Massachusetts

Location: The Outer Cape, roughly 90 miles from downtown Boston Why We Love It: Unparalleled, wide-open stretches of soft sand and wind-swept dunes

No list like this would be complete without including Cape Cod National Seashore , 40 miles of pristine beaches, freshwater ponds, and high dunes interspersed by lighthouses, cranberry bogs, and hiking trails. The recreational opportunities are practically endless, and whole books have been written about how to make the most of the beaches here. But if you want a down-and-dirty guide for newbies, this is it. Coast Guard Beach, in the town of Eastham, is one of the most popular beaches because it’s great for lounging and swimming on the Atlantic side, and it also offers paddling in nearby Nauset Bay or Salt Pond Bay. If you want to feel like you’re walking off the Eastern Seaboard, head to Marconi Beach, with sweeping Atlantic views. Hiking along the bluffs here will make you feel as if you could see a white whale at any moment.

Know Before You Go: Traffic headed to the Cape is infamous on summer weekends, so if you go during peak times, it’s best to stay overnight or through the weekend. (Or instead, go during the week.) If you do stay overnight, Provincetown, despite its crowds and high price tags, is worth the added cost. This artist colony and LGBTQ+ capital is brimming with verve and quirkiness and the energy it adds to a vacation is a perfect complement to days spent in the salt and sand.

Bonus Beach: Crane Beach, Massachusetts

Location: Five miles from the town of Ipswich, 30 miles north of Boston Best For: Escaping the crowds and enjoying a slice of bucolic New England on your way to the beach

Cape Cod gets nearly all of the beach attention in Massachusetts, but this one, on the North Shore, features four miles of pristine shoreline backed by tall dunes and salt marshes. It can get busy on a summer weekend, but otherwise offers a peaceful opportunity for walking on the sand, hiking five miles worth of trails through the dunes, birdwatching, and paddling in the nearby Ipswich River or Essex Bay. Beach passes are required and can be purchased in advance . If you come, don’t leave before checking out Castle Hill on the Crane Estate , a palace-like summer estate built for industrialist Richard Teller Crane Jr., with impeccably maintained gardens and a rolling grass lawn stretching to the water.

Best Beach in Rhode Island

Location: In Middletown, next door to Newport Why We Love It: A city-person’s beach that has a good hike within walking distance

Locals call this mile-long stretch of sand on the southeastern shore of Aquidneck Island Second Beach , but it is anything but secondary. Not only does it have great swimming and sunbathing, the western flank of Sachuest, called Surfer’s End, is known for its consistent swells. If you get bored sunbathing on the beach, you can also easily walk to the eastern end, which is the beginning of Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge , with three miles of trails. Birdwatchers are common here because of the diversity of species, including the second largest wintering population of harlequin ducks on the Atlantic coast. It also has great fishing from shore, including an active night fishing permit system for striped bass.

Know Before You Go: This is a full-service beach, with concession stands, bathrooms, grills, etc., so don’t expect pristine wildlands—or to be by yourself. Rent a surfboard from the rental area and, after your session, check out Gilded Age mansions in Newport.

Best Beaches in New York

Ditch plains park beach, new york.

Location: Two miles east of Montauk Village, on the far eastern end of Long Island Why We Love It: It’s home to one of the best surf breafks on the East Coast.

For many New Yorkers trekking out to the Hamptons, this two-mile beach is as much a part of summer weekends as Hampton Water rosé. That’s, in part, because Ditch Plains is such a great place to set up for a day in the sun, thanks to its swim-friendly waters  (depending on conditions) and lifeguards on duty from Memorial Day to Labor Day (roughly). There’s also a food truck next to the beach, called Ditch Wich , that serves up some of the area’s best poke bowls and wraps. But the reason this beach is on this list is because of the surf break just offshore, which offers good waves in just about any swell direction. The lineup is notorious for getting crowded, but there are definitely days in the fall when, midweek, you can find yourself sharing swells with only one or two other surfers—or even snagging them all for yourself.

Know Before You Go: Parking in the lot next to the beach requires an East Hampton permit (available to residents only). In the summer, take an Uber/Lyft or, better yet, rent a cruiser bike in Montauk and ride here.

Bonus Beach: Napeague Beach, New York

Location: Between Amagansett and Montauk, on the east end of Long Island Best For: Getting a taste of what Long Island beaches felt like before the crowds invaded

Tucked off Highway 27 between the prim and proper Hamptons and the bustling beaches of Montauk lies one of the area’s great secrets: a two-mile stretch of sand that even locals overlook. Technically, it’s part of 1,364-acre Napeague State Park , but the beach here feels private, in part because it’s sandwiched between two neighborhoods who guard their sand with zeal. Napeague Beach is, however, open to the public, and it’s popular with 4x4ers that have beach driving permits . You can easily walk to the sand, however, by parking at a small, blink-and-you’ll-miss-it spot on the south side of Highway 27. This is where 4x4s access the beach, and you’ll have to walk from here through the dunes. Doing so only makes the empty beach feel that much more rewarding once you get a full view of the wind-swept dunes, with the occasional surfcaster chucking rigs far out into the ocean. Thanks to its remoteness, this beach is also popular with the endangered piping plover, so it’s often closed during summer nesting season. When it’s open, however—especially in fall—it can feel downright abandoned.

Location: Barnegat Peninsula, south of the town of Seaside Heights Why We Love It: White sand beaches in a wild landscape that feels frozen in time

Many New Jerseyans have never even been to this park, with 10 miles of sand dunes, maritime forests, and freshwater wetlands. That’s because this place is as far from the manicured sand, boardwalks, and hotdog stands as it gets. Island Beach State Park is proof that remote-feeling beaches can exist anywhere, even in New Jersey. In addition to being home to the state’s largest osprey colony, it’s frequented by peregrine falcons, waterfowl, shorebirds, and migrating songbirds. Fishermen flock here, too, whether they’re targeting the surf on the Atlantic side or casting in Barnegat Bay. There’s a designated swimming beach (called Ocean Swimming Beach), surfing, an area for kitesurfing, and even eight miles of trails. Sunbathing is really the only thing you shouldn’t do here, because you’ll be missing out on so much else.

Know Before You Go: One of the best recreational opportunities may be paddling from Island Beach into the Sedge Island Wildlife Management Area, one of New Jersey’s most productive wildlife habitats, with four different water trails to paddle through it.

Bonus Beach: Cape May Beach, New Jersey

Location: Cape May, on the far southern coast of the state Best For: Relaxing on manicured sand next to one of the most charming towns in all of New Jersey

This is the beach that many New Jerseyans will point to as their state’s best—and for good reason. The town of Cape May is lovely as hell, and downtown is adjacent to the main beach, with sugary sand that is raked cleaned nearly every day during summer, making it feel, well, pristine. It’s also welcoming, full of sunbathers and swimmers chilling out on the weekend, which is all part of the charm. This is a social beach, with the occasional fireworks show or movie on the beach night . If you want to sneak away from some of the crowds during the day, walk to the West, towards Cove Beach, which usually has more room to lay out an oversized beach towel (and great sunset views). There’s also plenty of activities nearby, including a few beach breaks good for groms, skimboarding, fishing, and paddling in the harbor.

Location: Seven miles south of Rehoboth Beach Why We Love It: Six miles of ocean-front sand and 20 miles of bay shoreline full of possibilities

This popular state park offers easy access to the junction of Indian River Bay, Rehoboth Bay, and the Atlantic Ocean. As such, it is overflowing with activities: swimming, surfing, fishing, sailing, windsurfing, hiking, paddling, crabbing, and camping, among others. There are two ocean swimming areas, patrolled by lifeguards during the summer season, and there’s a decent surf break at the Indian River Inlet , which can be great with some southerly wind protection (but is also challenging, thanks to its shallow water). If you want to stretch your legs, there’s a one-mile hiking trail through the adjacent Burton Island Nature Preserve , with raised boardwalks over the marshlands.

Know Before You Go: There’s a $5 daily entrance fee ($10 for nonresidents), but those fees help make this an extremely well-managed park, with great resources to help you plan practically any adventure, whether it’s birding, surfcasting, paddling, or something else.

Best Beach in Maryland

Location: Maryland’s Eastern Shore, roughly 10 miles from Ocean City Why We Love It: 37 miles of remote dunes with herds of wild horses

There is no other place on the East Coast that demonstrates just how wild a coastline can be like this national seashore, which stretches across the Maryland and Virginia border. Assateague is one of the largest barrier islands on the eastern seaboard with uninterrupted coastal habitats, and it has become famous for its wild horses, which have been here for hundreds of years. If you want to see them, you’re probably better off  heading to the Maryland side or by booking a tour with a third-party organizer. There are two entrances, one in the north and one in the south, and there is no vehicle access between the two (other than by going back to the mainland). If you want to really explore the beaches—and you have a four-wheel drive rig—you can apply for and purchase an over-sand vehicle (OVS) permit , which allows you to access nearly the entire length of the beach . You can fish mile after mile of remote surf or just find an open stretch of sand to sit down and enjoy the ocean breeze.

Know Before You Go: Nearly every year, it seems, Assateague breaks its previous record for visitation, with 2.3 million people coming here in 2022 . So yes, expect to share the sand. The northern end of Assateague Island tends to be less busy than the southern end, but the surest way to get away from the crowds is with an OSV permit or by walking a few miles down the beach.

Best Beach in Virginia

Location: Roughly 19 miles south of Virginia Beach Why We Love It: It remains one of the last undeveloped shorelines in this part of the Atlantic coast.

This is not the place to come if you’re hoping to lay out a towel and soak in some rays (there are no dedicated swimming areas, either), but it is one of Virginia’s most dramatic, and least visited, parks. Situated between Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge and the North Carolina border, False Cape State Park offers excellent stretches of open sand that are accessible only by hiking, biking, or boating to them. The reward is stunning coastal views, good surfcasting, and on the bay side, a maze of water trails to paddle. There are a series of hiking trails to choose from, too, which total 15.3 miles. These include Barbour Hill, a 1.42-mile self-guided trek through the dunes to the ocean. If you’re committed, there’s even a primitive camping program, which requires a hike into your site of anywhere from five to nine miles. But you’re almost guaranteed to be all alone.

Know Before You Go: The park operates a tram ($8 per person) that offers a four-hour guided tour through Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge and False Cape State Park, which is a good way to see the wildlife here without committing to a longer hike or adventure.

Best Beaches in North Carolina

Location: On the Outer Banks, along highway NC-12 Why We Love It: Iconic lighthouses, unparalleled surf, and vast natural habitats

It’s hard to think of a better beach for a list like this. In reality, though, this is an entire ecosystem, with 70 miles and 30,000 acres of grass-covered dunes, wide sand beaches, marshes, and woodlands that are home to some 400-plus bird species, among other critters. Sure, there will be crowds and traffic in summer, but it’s hard to find a more alluring coastline with so many activities. Surfing is excellent here, with regular swells at a range of spots, including Canadian Hole and the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, both near the town of Buxton. It’s also very well established as a kite-surfing hotspot, with consistent winds blowing through Pamlico Sound (launch from Kite Point ). Fishing is great, too—both on the ocean and sound sides—and paddlers can explore the flat waters on the sound side as well, launching from the Oregon Inlet Kayak Launch. There are even three different hiking trails, including a nine-mile trek through the dunes and maritime forests on Hatteras Island. Frankly, it’s hard to imagine a better seashore for basically anything you want to do outside.

Know Before You Go : Cape Hatteras National Seashore is free to enter, but there are fees for just about everything else—off-road vehicle use, camping, and climbing the 200 steps to the top of Bodie Island Lighthouse, for example ( $10 per person ). Also, Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, a highlight for many people, is closed for at least the next year or two as it undergoes repairs.

Bonus Beach: Ocracoke Island, North Carolina

Location: In the southern Outer Banks , across the channel from Hatteras Island Best For: Getting away from it all

Technically, this 13-mile-long barrier island is part of Cape Hatteras National Seashore, as most of it is managed by the park service, but it feels a world apart, thanks to its frozen-in-time quirkiness and just how raw the landscape feels. Ocracoke is also a testament to how going the extra mile is totally worth it. The island is only accessible by ferry , which makes the beaches here much, much less crowded. It can often feel as  if you’re alone, especially in early fall. For surfing, the beach near Ocracoke Inlet offers consistent waves, and fishermen can surfcast along the Atlantic shores or set up on the sound-side shoreline, like at South Point. Hammock Hills Nature Trail offers a good walk for hikers. There’s even a herd of ponies managed by the park service that are descendants of wild horses that have lived on the island since the 17th or 18th century, give or take a 100 years.

Best Beaches in South Carolina

Folly beach, south carolina.

Location: Twelve miles from downtown Charleston, on Folly Island Why We Love It: An eclectic mix of Southern charm and seaside cool that’s hard to find anywhere else

Folly Beach is no secret—tourists have been coming here for generations—but this 12-square-mile barrier island is the epitome of what a great seaside community should be. “Beaching” is just a way of life here, which makes the whole thing irresistible, even if you’re just walking down the fishing pier. Of course, there’s a reason people flock here: six miles of white sand, palm trees, and warm Atlantic waters ideal for sunbathing, swimming, and, of course, surfing. Folly’s most famous break is the Washout, known for kicking up some of the best waves on the East Coast. There’s also plenty of other outdoor activities, from kayaking and SUPing through the marshes on the Folly River side of the island to riding a cruiser bike around town. Folly Beach can be a bit of a scene at night, but that also makes it great for snagging some beach town energy and good eats, from fresh seafood to beachside tacos. There’s perhaps no better place to escape reality for a weekend (or two).

Know Before You Go: While surfing at Folly Beach is better in the winter, the summer months are the prime time for live music, festivals, outdoor movies, and crowds, making it the best time to experience its full intensity. Parking can be a challenge, so if you’re only coming for a weekend day, it’s best to rideshare.

Bonus Beach: Hunting Island State Park Beach, South Carolina

Location: 15 miles east of the town Beaufort, and roughly 90 miles south of Charleston Best For: A beach trip that’s as much about outdoor adventures as lying on the sand

Hunting Island State Park is South Carolina’s most popular park—5,000 acres of pristine Lowcountry that’s full of salt marshes, palmetto and live oak forests, and a four-mile-long stretch of white sand. Even with the crowds on a summer weekend, however, this barrier island feels pristine, as it’s almost totally undeveloped. And if you come on a weekday (or, better yet, in the fall,), it’ll feel downright remote. There are a number of great hiking trails in the park, including the 1.9-mile Diamondback Rattlesnake Trail and the easy-peasy Marsh Boardwalk , which might be the best spot along the coast for taking in the sunset. There’s a 950-foot fishing pier, and paddling in the marshes surrounding the island. As for the beach, it doesn’t disappoint either, and if you walk to the southern end you can see Little Hunting Island Boneyard Beach, where skeletal remains of dead trees dot the sand.

Best Beaches in Georgia

Location: Roughly 75 miles south of Savannah, near the tiny town of Darien Why We Love It: Untouched natural beauty and a rich history on the South’s most overlooked coastline

Sapelo Island, the fourth largest barrier island in Georgia, is one of the East Coast’s best-kept secrets. There are miles and miles of pristine beaches, maritime forests, and salt marshes across this 12-mile-long island, which has hardly changed since the 1980s—or even the 1880s. While the landscape here is unforgettable, the island is mostly known for its unique history, being home to the Hog Hammock community, one of the South’s few remaining Gullah Geechee settlements , descendants of enslaved West Africans brought to work on plantations along the Atlantic coast. Today, there are roughly 70 people who live in Hog Hammock. Each of the island’s two most famous buildings, the R.J. Reynolds Mansion and the Sapelo Island Lighthouse, have over 200 years of history on the island, too. In short, if you want a place that’s perfect for disconnecting from the modern world, this is it. You can ride a bike down the empty streets, kayak to Blackbeard Island National Wildlife Refuge (of Blackbeard pirate fame) for bird-watching, or simply stroll along the untouched shores—all of which can be mind-blowingly deserted. Nanny Goat Beach, for example, is completely wide-open sand with hardly a soul on it. It’s hard to believe a place like this even exists today.

Know Before You Go: This is not the place to come if you’re looking for a quick getaway. The only way to arrive at Sapelo is via a 30-minute ferry ride, provided by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources ( $5 per person ). Planning ahead is essential, as you’ll likely need to stay the night and there are very few places to crash. AirbnB may be your best bet or reserve a spot at Cabretta Campground . Locals still protect this island and its heritage as if it’s their own—because it is. A little respect goes a long way to making your visit feel rewarding.

Bonus Beach: Cumberland Island, Georgia

Location: On the far southern coast of Georgia, just across the water from Fernandina Beach, Florida Best For: Camping in one of the South’s most serene, untouched landscapes

Cumberland is Georgia’s largest and southernmost barrier island, and it’s easy to add another superlative to this list: wildest. This national seashore stretches over 17 miles of empty beaches, framed by majestic live oaks and palmettos, and is home to a population of feral horses, which you can often see passing by on the unpaved roads. The island’s isolation is its appeal, but there is plenty to do, too. There are wide sandy shores to walk on, ruins from Dungeness Mansion to explore, and an extensive network of trails to amble around on. Access to Cumberland Island is controlled via the National Park Service, and the easiest  way to get here is via a 45-minute ferry ride (and you’ll need an advanced permit if you plan to camp here). There are no stores and very limited facilities, so you also need to be self-sufficient. But the experience of camping under the stars with the sounds of the ocean and the sight of wild horses is simply unmatched.

Best Beaches in Florida

Location: A little over an hour East of Orlando, just a short drive from Kennedy Space Center Why We Love It: A surfer’s paradise with a laid-back atmosphere on Florida’s “Space Coast”

Cocoa Beach, with its endless stretches of soft, sandy beaches, and consistent waves no matter the season, is one of the East Coast’s most iconic beach destinations. No other city on the eastern seaboard is so well-known for its surfing and surf culture (it’s the hometown of Kelly Slater, after all). It lives up to the hype. There are waves for beginners and seasoned surfers alike, with the iconic Cocoa Beach Pier providing the perfect backdrop for those looking to simply enjoy the view of the lineups. The area is also steeped in space history, being just 20 miles to the Kennedy Space Center and Cape Canaveral. You can even watch a rocket launch from the beach if you time it right (check out the rocket launch calendar at the space center’s website). If you’re looking for slower-paced activities, there’s decent fishing from the pier and the Banana River is great for paddling. Windsurfing is common here, too, so there’s plenty going on, even without rocket ships to the moon.

Know Before You Go: It may seem like cheesy activity, but the nearby Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex is totally worth the trip. The same can be said of the Ron Jon Surf Shop , which bills itself as the largest surf shop in the world, at 52,000 square feet.

Bonus Beach: Sebastian Inlet State Park, Florida

Location: Florida’s central east coast, roughly 17 miles north of Vero Beach Best For: Surfing and fishing excursions

Sebastian Inlet State Park is well-known for its surf breaks and its fishing spots, which are both excellent on account of the park being situated where the Indian River flows into the Atlantic. The park’s First Peak and Monster Hole offer some of the best surf breaks on the East Coast and its waters are teeming with snook, redfish, and Spanish mackerel, making it a premier fishing destination. The Indian River Lagoon has calm waters that are good for paddling and there’s even a decent trail in the park to walk on, called Hammock Trail. There are, of course, long stretches of unspoiled sand great for sunbathing and shell collecting (this is a Best Beaches list, after all.) It’s a bit of an ordeal to drive to it, because the causeways accessing the barrier island are miles apart, but that also makes it less crowded. The best part, though, is that it’s far away from the hoopla of the Miami metroplex in the south and Daytona Beach in the north, meaning this beach is totally worth the extra effort to get to it.

The Best Places for the Northern Lights

The northern lights, known as the aurora borealis, are a spectacular natural light show visible at certain times of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. They occur when electrically charged particles from the sun collide with gases in the Earth's atmosphere, creating vibrant streaks of blue, green, pink and violet dancing across the night sky. 2024 and 2025 are an excellent time to catch the northern lights: Solar activity will be at a peak, making for a more impressive experience, if you're in the right place.

The best places to see the aurora borealis have little light pollution, clear skies and no precipitation. The lights are only visible at northern latitudes when it's dark outside, so the months from September to April are best for seeing the aurora. There's also a Southern Hemisphere counterpart, the aurora australis; there are fewer easy spots from which to view this phenomenon, but if you're lucky, it can be equally brilliant.

Fairbanks, Alaska

Fairbanks is by far one of the best places in the world to view the northern lights, as it's located directly under the auroral oval. This ring-shaped zone sits around the Earth's geomagnetic North Pole and is generally associated with the most vibrant aurora sightings. Visitors can expect to see the lights on an average of four out of five clear nights during aurora season, which lasts from late August to late April.

You can book a northern lights tour to see the aurora from the springs and tubs at Chena Hot Springs Resort. This excursion includes round-trip transportation to the resort from town, a soak in the hot springs, a visit to the Fairbanks Aurora Ice Museum and an aurora viewing tour; dinner and drinks centered around Alaska produce are an option extra with hot drinks supplied.

There's more to Fairbanks than just the northern lights: If you visit in late summer, consider family-friendly activities like a ride on the Riverboat Discovery or gold panning. For a festive holiday experience in the winter, head around 15 miles out of Fairbanks to visit the Santa Claus House in the city of North Pole. Travelers can also see ice sculptures in February and March at the impressive World Ice Art Championships or take a dog-sledding or snowmobiling tour .

Where to stay: For excellent chances of aurora viewing, book a private igloo at Borealis Basecamp, a top glamping resort located on 100 remote acres of boreal forest about 25 miles from Fairbanks. With activities like dog-sledding on top of aurora viewing, past visitors regularly describe it as a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Tromsø, Norway

Located about 220 miles above the Arctic Circle, Tromsø is one of several top spots to view the northern lights in Norway. At the darkest point of the aurora season – which runs from September to early April – the sun doesn't rise in this northern part of the country, although there is twilight during the day. With this level of darkness, there are more opportunities to see the aurora.

Tromsø itself is a small but lively city, so there's plenty to see and do when you're not looking up at the sky, including a visit to the beautiful Arctic Cathedral. In late January to early February, the city hosts the Northern Lights Festival, a 10-day music and performing arts event featuring a variety of musical genres.

Aurora chasers can view the lights on their own while in town, but to get a better view, it's recommended to head away from the city lights. Arctic Circle Tours is one company offering guided trips, with small groups for a more personal vibe. Alternatively, adventure-seekers can embark on an exhilarating husky trekking expedition in the Arctic wilderness.

Where to stay: For accommodations with harbor views, look no further than the Scandic Ishavshotel – guests love it for its convenient central location in the city, as well as its plus-sized breakfast buffet with plenty of choices.

Luosto and Rovaniemi (Lapland), Finland

Lapland is located within the Arctic Circle in the northernmost part of Finland. The northern lights are most visible here between the end of August and April – and approximately 200 times a year – so there are many opportunities for aurora spotting. Finnish Lapland is also known as home to the Sámi people (the only recognized Indigenous group in the European Union region), some 200,000 reindeer and Santa Claus – who can be visited in the town of Rovaniemi, the region's largest city and a great base for your aurora expedition.

Consider venturing roughly 70 miles north of Rovaniemi to the resort town of Luosto, set among the picturesque and hilly landscape of Pyhä-Luosto National Park. Here, you can also spend a magical evening outdoors under star-filled skies during a reindeer-drawn sleigh ride through the snow-covered forests. Jaakkola Reindeer Farm offers a reindeer sleigh tour to spot the aurora once weekly; it includes a stop to warm up at a bonfire camp with snacks, hot beverages and local fireside stories.

Where to stay: For a bucket list experience, watch the impressive light show from a glass igloo at Santa's Hotel Aurora & Igloos in Luosto. Past visitors love the cozy atmosphere here, boosted by amenities like saunas and log fireplaces. If you're sticking to Rovaniemi, the Arctic TreeHouse Hotel is a stunning choice, with designer cabins perched among the snow-covered taiga forest.

Orkney, Scotland

This group of captivating (and mostly uninhabited) islands, located about 10 miles off Scotland's remote northern coast, is one of the best places to see the northern nights in the U.K. Fall and winter are the best seasons to witness the aurora, also known in local Shetland dialect as the "Mirrie Dancers," with fall bringing the highest proportion of clear nights. A few places to see the spectacular light show include along the coast at Birsay or the Broch of Gurness, an archaeological ruin on a sweeping and dramatic coastline.

In addition to the aurora, Orkney is home to breathtaking coastal landscapes and more sheep than you can count (try some local lamb, if you can). Travelers can also visit the Heart of Neolithic Orkney, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with several monuments dating back 5,000 years.

Where to stay: During your visit, plan to stay in the historic town of Kirkwall, the capital of the Orkney Islands: The no-fuss Ayre Hotel offers harbor views, and past visitors compliment the hearty meals in the hotel restaurant. Spot the aurora close to town at Inganess Bay and Wideford Hill.

Yellowknife, Canada

Yellowknife, the capital of Canada 's Northwest Territories, dubs itself the "Aurora Capital of the World." Thanks to its position in the middle of the auroral oval, the city puts on one of the world's most awe-inspiring light shows. The period from mid-November to the beginning of April is the recommended time to spot the aurora, but it's also possible to see the aurora during more hospitable weather from late summer to early fall as the lights are visible up to 240 days a year.

Located on the northern shore of Great Slave Lake, Yellowknife boasts winter sports such as ice fishing and cross-country skiing. If you visit in March, plan to attend the monthlong Snowkings' Winter Festival, which features events and activities like a snow-carving competition, a snow castle, live music and more.

For a unique experience, book a tour through Aurora Village to view the lights. The property will pick you up from your hotel and take you to its site, where you can stay warm in a tent while sipping hot beverages. The Aboriginal-owned Aurora Village also offers activities such as dog-sledding or snowshoeing excursions.

Where to stay: Warm up in the fireside lounge at The Explorer Hotel in Yellowknife. Previous visitors note the warm and helpful staff as a strength here.

Jukkasjärvi, Sweden

The optimal time for seeing the illuminated skies in the northern part of Sweden, known as Swedish Lapland, is between early September and late March. The small Swedish village of Jukkasjärvi sits around 125 miles above the Arctic Circle on the Torne River and is an ideal locale for aurora viewing. You'll fly to the nearby Kiruna Airport to get here. With the village's origins dating back to the 17th century, you can still find some of the original homesteads, including an old timber cottage. Today the village boasts 800 residents – and more than 1,000 dogs.

Where to stay: If you're up for a chilly overnight adventure, reserve accommodations at the world's first permanent ice hotel, the aptly named Icehotel 365. Each of its artist-designed suites is sculpted from ice with a unique theme and maintains temperatures around minus 5 degrees Celsius (about 23 degrees Fahrenheit). The rooms also feature beds with reindeer hides and thermal sleeping bags so you can bundle up during the night. While you're at the property, take advantage of the guided "Northern Lights Safari on Snowmobile" or embark on the "Moose Safari on Horseback" atop an Icelandic horse.

Reykjavik, Iceland

October through March is the best time to chase the aurora borealis in Iceland . There are numerous natural parks and attractions throughout the country where you can view the show during the long and dark winter, but the capital city of Reykjavik also offers many options for accommodations, restaurants, tours and other activities for your visit. For optimum aurora viewing in the city away from the light pollution, head to Öskjuhlið. This wooded and hilly area in Reykjavik sits at 200 feet above sea level and has walkways and paths where you can see the nighttime show.

Atop this hill sits Perlan, which houses the only planetarium in the country and a museum featuring exhibits about Iceland. Perlan is also home to the world's first indoor ice cave and glacier exploratorium. During your visit, don't miss the panoramic views of the city from the building's fourth-floor observation deck. From this vantage point, you'll be able to see the Snæfellsjökull glacier; Keilir, a volcanic mountain; and Esja, the mountain of Reykjavik.

Where to stay: While in Reykjavik, splurge on an overnight tour with Buubble Tours. This experience includes breathtaking sightseeing spots and a night spent under the magical northern skies in a transparent bubble at the 5 Million Star Hotel. For longer stays, consider the eco-friendly Eyja Guldsmeden Hotel, with sweeping views of the city – guests love it for its cozy yet chic Scandinavian design.

Southern Iceland

While Reykjavik is a great aurora-viewing spot if you like having amenities close by, consider getting out into Iceland's stunning, otherworldly countryside for a unique backdrop for the northern lights. One unique place to see them is the black sand beach at Reynisfjara (but watch out for the dangerous waves here). Alternatively, head to Jökulsárlón, a glacial lagoon and seal habitat, where the aurora's reflections in the icy water are truly beautiful.

There's no shortage of tours that will stop by these locations and more for possible aurora sightings. Consider a 10- or 13-day tour around the country with Fun Travel, or a four-day option from Arctic Adventures. If you want to do things at your own place, it's also possible to self-drive – just know that road conditions can be icy, particularly in the depths of winter (although Icelandic roads are generally well-maintained).

Where to stay: Hotel Rangá is a formidable option for aurora-spotting. It offers a variety of special amenities, such as aurora wake-up calls, a lookout deck and snowsuits to keep you warm if you're outside viewing the lights. Past visitors praise Rangá for being a comfortable yet luxurious place to relax, be it in the outdoor hot tubs or the cozy and sociable bar.

Kangerlussuaq, Greenland

Greenland may not be the most accessible place to travel for viewing the northern lights, with limited flight options (mostly via Iceland), but those who make it here will be thrilled they did. The tundra of Kalaallit Nunaat – the Greenlandic name for the country – is one of the best places on the globe to see the aurora from September to early April.

For the more adventurous aurora seekers, head to the top of the Greenland Ice Cap for spectacular views of the lights. This impressive glacier covers 80% of the country and is accessible via the tiny town of Kangerlussuaq. Located on a fjord right along the Arctic Circle, the town, often described as a gateway to Greenland, was a former U.S. Air Force base and is now home to Greenland's main airport. The town is known for having clear skies on some 300 nights per year, so chances of a sighting are particularly good here.

Tour company Guide to Greenland offers various tours, from two-hour aurora-viewing trips to a tough but rewarding multi-night dog-sledding expedition across the ice. For a less strenuous experience, companies like Nordic Saga Tours offer cruises through the Arctic landscapes around Kangerlussuaq.

There are also other stargazing opportunities throughout the year at Headlands. During the summer months the Milky Way is visible across the sky, and late summer evenings entertain visitors with meteor showers.

Voyageurs National Park, Minnesota

Located on the international border between Minnesota and Ontario, Voyageurs National Park is an approximately 218,000-acre labyrinth of boreal forests, lakes and streams. Voyageurs is Minnesota's only national park; it's also unique in that the park's interior is accessible only by boat, unless you visit by snowmobile in winter. As a certified International Dark Sky Park , Voyageurs provides opportunities to view the Milky Way on clear evenings, especially in the summer. Year-round aurora viewing is also possible on evenings with clear dark skies, but chances are better during the winter, when it's dark for longer.

For a guided stargazing tour – including the Milky Way, the constellations and (if you're lucky) the northern lights – book with Voyageurs Outfitters. If you're on your own, park officials note that almost any campsite is a good spot for northern lights viewing and stargazing. You can also check out the boat launch areas around Ash River, Kabetogama Lake and the Rainy Lake Visitor Center for top-notch views.

Where to stay: Those who prefer to sleep in a warm, cozy bed instead of camping under the stars can make reservations at the Cantilever Distillery + Hotel, a boutique Trademark Collection by Wyndham property in the nearby town of Ranier, Minnesota. Abisko National Park, Sweden

Given its Arctic location, Sweden is one of the prime spots for aurora viewing in the Northern Hemisphere, with Swedish Lapland at the top of the list. The fall and winter months (from September to March) offer the best opportunities to witness the spectacle, as there is more darkness than light during the days.

If you're up for the Arctic adventure, December is an ideal month to visit Abisko National Park, which some regard as one of the best places on Earth to see the lights dance across the sky. The park's mountainous terrain and clear dark skies offer dramatic front-row seats for viewing the northern lights. The Aurora Sky Station is one of the best vantage points to see the aurora in the park. Join one of the expert presentations to learn about the science behind this fascinating phenomenon.

If you'd prefer to chase the lights with a curated tour, professional photographers and aurora-chasing guides at Visit Abisko lead three- to four-hour tours throughout the fall and winter. If you can, try to join the tours in fall, as this time of year offers a unique opportunity to view the lights both in the sky and reflected in the lakes and rivers, which you won't see in the winter months.

Where to stay: For cozy Nordic vibes, stay at Abisko Mountain Lodge, which also offers activities like ice climbing and snowmobile tours in winter. Guests love the excellent restaurant here, which offers Swedish specialties ranging from salmon to moose.

Nellim, Finland

Located a stone's throw from the Russian border in Finnish Lapland, this remote Arctic destination is a top-rated locale to view the northern lights due to the lack of light pollution. You'll be seriously out of the way of any built-up areas, as there's not even a paved road into Nellim. The best time to visit is between December and early April. This village is a great place to hunker down in a lodge and relax while enjoying a slice of life in the Finnish wilderness.

Where to stay: The Nellim Wilderness Hotel offers a perfect base with year-round activities, including aurora-chasing tours by car, snowmobile or on snowshoes. You can even take a sleigh ride through the snow to a campsite on Lake Inari to spot the aurora in pristine nature.

Beyond standard rooms, the Wilderness Hotel also offers glass-roofed cabins, as well as classic log cabins and bubble-shaped accommodations for two where guests can watch the dancing lights through the glass roof above your warm, cozy bed. When you're not chasing the lights, enjoy other Arctic activities like a husky safari, ice fishing, snowmobiling or a day in the snow meeting the local reindeer.

Saariselkä and Kakslauttanen, Finland

These two towns are around 150 miles above the Arctic Circle, with a prime location under the auroral oval, allowing as many as 200 opportunities per year to see the northern lights (weather permitting, of course). This area in Finnish Lapland is known for its stunning scenery, Sámi culture, cross-country and downhill skiing, and Urho Kekkonen National Park – one of Finland's largest.

Ski enthusiasts can roll two trips into one by hitting the slopes by day in Saariselkä and aurora spotting by night at Finland's northernmost ski resort. March into early April is the best time to view the aurora, as the Finnish Meteorological Institute notes that the weather is usually clearer at this time of year. But it's possible to see the northern lights at any time during the season from late August to early or mid-April.

Where to stay: Seven miles south of Saariselkä sits the village of Kakslauttanen, where you can book two- or four-person Glass Igloos at the Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort. The new Kelo-Glass Igloos, which sleep up to six, mix the comforts of a log chalet with the visibility of the glass roof; enjoy a private sauna, a fireplace and more. There's also an impressive selection of year-round tours and activities at this resort, including northern lights excursions on snowmobiles or by horse-drawn carriage.

Stewart Island, New Zealand

Although they may be isolated, some far-south destinations offer the chance to see the aurora australis – or southern lights. While you might be able to see them year-round in some locations (just as with the northern lights), certain months are better for aurora viewing in the Southern Hemisphere. Stewart Island is regarded as one of the top spots to see the brilliant display in New Zealand , with 85% of the island encompassed by Rakiura National Park, so there are few people and virtually no light pollution. You can reach Stewart Island by flying in from Invercargill or taking a ferry from Bluff.

New Zealand's winter months – June to August – are the best time to see the southern lights; spring and fall are also not bad times to spot them. The brighter summer months, between December and February, make it more difficult to spot the aurora, but there's still a chance you'll catch a glimpse between midnight and 4 a.m.

Where to stay: Consider reserving a room with at Stewart Island Lodge, an intimate bed-and-breakfast. This beautiful property is just minutes by foot from the village of Oban, and the property will pick you up at the ferry terminal for your stay. Past visitors rave about the spectacular views of Halfmoon Bay and the Foveaux Strait from both the rooms and lodge terrace.

Tasmania sits approximately 150 miles south of mainland Australia. This mountainous island is one of relatively few places on the planet where it's theoretically possible to see the aurora 365 days a year due to its latitude, which allows for full darkness even on summer nights. The capital city of Hobart is the easiest point of entry: It's home to Tasmania's largest airport and serves as a convenient base. The city's burgeoning food and cultural scenes will also give you plenty to see and do.

From here you'll be able to reach several great viewing locations with unobstructed and open views of the sea along the southern and southeast coastlines, like Goat Bluff and Tinderbox Bay. When you're not staring at the night sky, splurge on a once-in-a-lifetime helicopter flight with Tasmanian Air Tours. Depending on your whims, your private pilot can whisk you away to soar over the sea cliffs; stop at a local winery to sample local vintages; or head south to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Port Arthur , Tasmania 's historic and most notorious prison.

Expedition cruise to Antarctica

If you're one of the lucky few people on the planet to travel to the southernmost continent on Earth, it may be pricey, but you'll have an adventure of a lifetime in Antarctica, especially if the aurora illuminates the sky. The southern lights are most visible in the winter months (between March and October), but due to weather conditions, only researchers brave the Antarctic winter – and they mostly stay indoors.

However, all hope is not lost if you seek to view the aurora australis in Antarctica. Late-season expedition cruises to this continent offered in March also bring the opportunity to view the southern lights and enjoy the end of Antarctica's fleeting summer. As the days shorten in length, you may encounter light snow across the extreme landscape and ice starting to form on the water's surface.

When it comes to wildlife viewing, humpback whale sightings are abundant, and you'll still see penguin colonies – including king and gentoo penguins. You can also keep your eyes peeled for elephant seals, leopard seals, wandering albatross and other species of birds. When night falls on clear evenings, look for the light show in the southern sky. Companies that offer March voyages include Swoop Antarctica, Atlas Ocean Voyages, Silversea Cruises , Aurora Expeditions and Hurtigruten Expeditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

There's no one location that's widely accepted as the best place to see the northern lights. However, the strongest light displays are within what's called the "auroral oval": a rough circle around the Earth's magnetic northern pole that tends to occur around 60 to 70 degrees of latitude. The oval's exact size expands and contracts (some more southerly destinations can fall under it when the aurora is particularly strong), but there are certain locations that generally fall within the oval most of the time.

These places include:

• Central and northern Alaska
• Large areas of Yukon, the Northwest Territories and northern Quebec in Canada
• Southern Greenland
• Far northern Norway, Sweden and Finland

Within these areas, it could be argued that Iceland is the best place to see the aurora as it experiences much milder temperatures than some other areas within the oval. But this is subjective, and some travelers may prefer a location like Yellowknife in Canada for a full-on, very cold Arctic experience.

The northern lights are only visible when it's dark out. Since many of the best places to see them are so far north that they experience near-constant daylight in the summer, you'll generally want to schedule a trip between late August and early April. However, within this time period, there's some debate about the best time to catch the lights. For example, the aurora tends to be more active around the September and March equinoxes due to stronger solar winds – but on the other hand, your chances of seeing them may be higher in the depths of winter, since there's longer nights and therefore a longer window in which they might appear.

In more southern locations like Minnesota, it may be possible to see the light show in the summer months, but it's still advisable to go at a time when the nights are longer. It can also be worth trying to schedule your northern lights trip when there's a new moon: While the aurora can shine through moonlight, it may be harder to see if there's a full moon.

Of course, cloudy weather can block the aurora even if you go at the right time of year. So, it may be wise to research the local weather patterns at your chosen destination to find out if there's a month where you can expect clearer skies. In many cases, though, there's a little luck involved.

These two countries can offer excellent views of the northern lights, since both are directly under the typical auroral oval. Yet there are some differences to be aware of.

In Norway, you'll need to head to the north of the country to catch the aurora: While they have been sighted in Oslo , the capital and largest city, it's too far south to be a reliable vantage point. Cities like Tromsø are popular spots, but direct flights there are only possible from some European cities, so North Americans will have to take connecting flights. On the other hand, Iceland is generally easier to reach, with direct flights to its capital, Reykjavik, from a large number of U.S. destinations (particularly from the East Coast) with no further connection required.

Since clear skies are key for seeing the northern lights, weather is another factor to consider. In November, December and March, Reykjavik has statistically slightly more frequent clear skies, while in January and February, Tromsø is a little better, but the difference isn't big: Both places have clear skies only around 25 to 30% of the time in these months. Reykjavik has slightly warmer weather, though, so between that and the ease of access, it has a slight edge over Norway for seeing the northern lights.

Alaska and Iceland are known for stellar aurora light shows, so deciding between them may depend on which destination you find more convenient and more to your tastes. In Alaska , the city of Fairbanks is considered a great spot to catch the northern lights. (They can still be seen elsewhere in the state – for example, in Anchorage, although they're not so common in more southern locations like Juneau). The advantage of Fairbanks is that you won't need a passport , yet there aren't many direct flights from the lower 48 states. Despite being an international destination, Iceland may be more accessible (particularly from the eastern U.S.), thanks to fairly regular flights to Reykjavik from numerous American cities.

Fairbanks does offer statistically better weather for aurora viewing: It has clear skies more often than Reykjavik, particularly in March when the Alaska city experiences them around 45% of the time (compared to about 25% for Reykjavik). But you'll have to be able to tolerate the cold. While temperatures in Reykjavik hover around freezing in midwinter, Fairbanks is a veritable deep freeze, with average highs around 5 degrees Fahrenheit down to lows colder than minus 5 in December.

F or those of a certain age, some may be picky with where we want to visit or, depending on whether or not we have mobility issues, can visit. However, there are plenty of spectacular, scenic, and most importantly, relaxing places where we can take a getaway. Here are some of the best US vacations for seniors to enjoy.

1. Acadia National Park, Maine

One of the most scenic ways to experience Maine is to visit Acadia National Park. With its coastal beauty along the Atlantic Ocean, its rocky shores, 158 miles of hiking trails, an abundance of wildlife, and quintessential New England lighthouses Bass Harbor Lighthouse is pictured here), Acadia is one of the most-visited national parks in the U.S. It's also quite friendly for senior citizens to explore. Summer is just around the bend, which may have you dreaming about a beachside vacation. Here's the good news: the vacation can become a reality for much less than you think. 

DIVEIN Travel released its latest study showcasing the top beach destinations for budget-conscious travelers. To create its rankings the team calculated based on factors like dining and beverage prices and the median cost for a six-night stay for two to find the best beaches for the best price for spring and summer travel. 

After looking at all the data, the team named Twelvemile Beach in Michigan the top choice for a budget beach trip. 

"Twelvemile Beach emerges as the most budget-friendly option, offering unparalleled value with the lowest average hotel cost of just $464.31 for a six-night stay," the team stated in its findings, which it shared with Travel + Leisure . Here, the team added, travelers can "enjoy meals for around $20 and beers for $7.50 while basking in the tranquil ambiance of Michigan’s shores." 

According to the National Parks Service , the beach is, you guessed it, 12 miles long and a prime spot for day-use and picnicking in the sun. However, it also noted that visitors need to be "prepared for a long flight of stairs leading from the bluff down to the beach." Pups are also allowed, so long as they are on a leash. 

Following Twelvemile Beach is Mustang Island State Park in Texas, which came in second thanks to its affordable hotel prices, which average $476.94 for a six-night stay. And in third place is Wrightsville Beach in North Carolina, where travelers can expect hotel stays priced at $636.70.  

Coast Guard Beach in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, came in fourth, with a six-night stay running at $651.70, while Sand Beach in Acadia National Park, Maine, rounded out the top with hotel prices averaging $796.67.  

On the other end of the spectrum, Honokalani Beach on the island of Maui in Hawaii ranked as the most expensive, but honestly, it's worth saving up to see this gorgeous place in person one day.
